THE JAN. 6 committee announced on Monday that it will refer former President Donald Trump for criminal charges for his role in the attack on the Capitol as Congress was certifying the 2020 election.
The referral, which was expected, came during the committee’s final meeting before releasing the final report on its investigation into the events of Jan. 6, 2021 and the larger effort to keep Trump in office despite losing handily to Joe Biden. The committee has said it will release the report on Wednesday.
Congress asking the Justice Department to criminally charge a former president is a historic move that speaks to the magnitude of the evidence the committee has gathered against Trump, who they have placed at the center of the scheme to overturn the election. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) laid out the details of the referrals, noting that the committee is seeking charges be brought against Trump for obstructing an official proceeding; conspiracy to defraud the United States government; knowingly and willingly making a false statement to the federal government; and inciting, assisting, or engaging in insurrection.

Watching the discourse repeat just like the lead up to 2016.
Tumblr media
I get it. I watch what's happening and I ache. I wish there was more I could do.
Yet if we get a repeat of 2016 in the u s of a we will not get a second chance. Whatever ideas you have for alternative options will vanish when all your allies get tossed into camps.
They say 2024 might very well be the last election if we repeat 2016.
No blue isn't a solution its a fucking bandaid. But it's one that buys us more time. The alternative is way tf worse. For everyone. For the issues now. For issues to come. For overseas and home.

I hope this isn’t a parody, it’s so fucking funny actually. I desperately want an “I ❤️ computer art” jacket in that messy scrawl, it gives the same vibes as the “graphic design is my passion”.
Also a bit funny and goofy that this dude disparages computer art when his (traditional, I assume, though it doesn’t really look like traditional art which is exactly why I fear that this is parody or something, but whatever)art looks like…. That. Like not to be mean but the artist dude looks like human squidward, and I guess this fits with his character, so reading this in his voice is kinda funny to me. Also I LOVE that the painting he did is a lil painting of him with the same expression, fantastic.
9/10- a joyful comic for a stoned me

I’m listening to the Jan 6. hearing with zero expectations. I will be really surprised if Trump faces any punishment for encouraging people to overthrow the government.

One of America's leading constitutional law experts called upon Attorney General Merrick Garland to prosecute Trump under racketeering laws designed to combat the mafia.
Laurence Tribe, professor emeritus at Harvard Law School, has argued three-dozen cases before the United State's Supreme Court and taught constitutional law for over half a century. Tribe taught Garland at Harvard Law, where he also taught Barack Obama, Supreme Court Justice John Roberts along with Jan. 6 select committee members Jaime Raskin (D-MD) and Adam Schiff (D-CA).
"Today’s hearing makes clearer than ever how deeply Trump and his acolytes have already damaged democracy at the ground level, driving honest election workers into hiding and creating a vacuum that fascists are in the process of filling," Tribe said.
Tribe noted a quote from former FBI Assistant Director Frank Figliuzzi on MSNBC.
"This is all looking increasingly like a kind of criminal enterprise. Trump at the head, almost a capo of an organized crime family," Figliuzzi said.
"Almost?" Tribe asked.
"This calls for RICO charges," he said.
The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act was "passed by Congress with the declared purpose of seeking to eradicate organized crime in the United States," the DOJ explains.
"It is unlawful for anyone employed by or associated with any enterprise engaged in, or the activities of which affect, interstate or foreign commerce, to conduct or participate, directly or indirectly, in the conduct of such enterprise's affairs through a pattern of racketeering activity or collection of unlawful debt," the DOJ said.
Tribe listed a number of prominent names in the conspiracy, including RNC Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel along with attorneys John Eastman, Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, and Kenneth Chesebro.
