Does Tagore belong to home and not world?
Indian fans woke up to a surprise as a video from Pakistani show featuring Rabindra Sangeet “Amaro Porano Jaha Chay” went viral. The footage is from the show “Dil Kya Karay”, where the lead actor Yumna Zaidi is seen crooning the popular Bengali song. Calling it a ‘proud moment’, fans even said that it was ‘heart-warming’ to see the inclusivity in the serial. Have you ever heard the saying “Music has no borders”? The words couldn’t be truer in case of these videos from a Pakistan TV show. They feature the popular Rabindra Sangeet “Amaro Porano Jaha Chay”.
In a country of a million idols and temples—including those for movie stars; a country where taxpayer money is spent on giant statues to politicians—there is something to be said about a culture that bows to a poet. Tagore was a philosopher and a polymath, a nationalist and a political ideologue, an artist and an educationist, but above all, he was a poet. And in celebrating him, we celebrate the spirit of poetry.
Be it Hindu-Muslim relations, women's emancipation, exploitation of nature, development of the village, or his contribution to modern art, Bengal's thinkers and commoners alike marvel at how the man remains relevant even today as his 160th birth anniversary dawns on May 9. Tagore was born in 1861 and lived till the age of 80. He wrote nearly 3,000 songs, set up an experimental school at Santiniketan, and went on to win the Nobel prize in 1913 for his compilation Gitanjali.
Bengalis do not need to read about Rabindranath, he is already flowing in our veins. Non-Bengalis are a different matter. When I was a boy in Calcutta, I remember watching one of my uncles reading the newspaper every morning, shaking his head and saying, ‘These non-Bengalis, I tell you!’ He was not pleased with the news, and he was clear about where the responsibility lay. Therefore, when Hindustan Times asked me to explain Rabindranath to non-Bengalis, I did not undertake the task lightly.
The first thing to understand about Rabindranath is that his shape is very distinctive. He had a strong aesthetic sense, and always art directed himself most beautifully. But he was most often portrayed with a yard long beard and in an ankle length kaftan, in profile, hands behind his back. He is one of the few famous people, along with Einstein and Gandhi, who can be recognized by a silhouette. He was a man in advance, he created his own emoji. As children growing up in Calcutta, long before we read him, we recognised his shape.
The first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, Rabindranath Tagore’s novels, stories, songs and dramas were acclaimed as well as criticised for their lyricism and colloquialism. Gitanjali, Gora and Ghore-Baire are his best-known works. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's “Jana Gana Mana” and Bangladesh's “Amar Shonar Bangla”.
Tagore has been an inescapable reality for all 250 million Bengali speaking people around the world. He is widely revered all over Bangladesh and in India.  He commands a towering presence in the Bengali speaking world. His literary achievements overshadow anything that happened before him and anything that happened after him in the Bengali literary world. Tagore, in fact, is embedded in the collective psyche of educated Bengalis. The Jorasanko Thakurbari is a living memory of a man whose impact and influence travelled continents and also reminds us why Bengali culture will always be indebted to Rabindranath Tagore. The writer of Indian National Anthem, the writer of Bangladesh's National Anthem, the person to have inspired Sri Lanka's National Anthem with his work, the first Non-European and also the first lyricist to win a Nobel Prize in literature - Rabindranath Tagore. Not just this, he was a renowned poet, painter, writer, composer, and philosopher.  Due to his achievements, Rabindranath Tagore is also known as the 'Bard of Bengal'.

a boy is born :’)
27 April 2020, 6:30 AM//
My dear darling Child,
I woke up as soon as Kunjha called, It had to be about you, and it was. She said your mother was taken to the labor room. few minutes in, she called in again, It’s a boy. You’re here and I’m glad you are.
I can’t wait to hold you, Like how i held your brothers two-three years ago for the very first time. I remember touching their pinky fingers and those tiny little fingers swirling around trying to hold on to mine. That’s probably when all the Chemistry, Physics and Biological explanations of Smallest unit of matter came back to me. I felt it, all of it. That was beautiful.
Welcome to the world little one.
My mother often tells me of how your mother looked after me when i was a toddler, and the moments I had with her are very beautifully enclosed in my little book of memories that i carry with myself, in a place people often call heart. Your mother has been a best friend since day one, she watched me grow and stood up at every nook and corner of lifes turnings to tell me how proud she was to see me growing up to be a even better version of myself. She celebrated every tiny achievement of mine and supported me when i was at the edge of failing to remind me how there is always a second chance. She calls me on random days just to listen to my voice and particularly listens to this song called ‘Heer’ from this one Bollywood movie ‘cuz it reminds her of how I used to sing it all day long for a very long time years ago. We have our moments, beautiful ones. I know I can always run back to her any day in my life and know that nothing has changed between us, ever.
Your brothers have been these tittle box of miracles that came my way. I have very fond memories with them. Just last day, when I asked your elder one when you’d be coming, he said your mother is going to get you from the hospital and bring you home soon, and that he’d give Kinder Joys to this little baby he is so excited to meet. They have smiles whenever they are talking about you, know that you’ll always grow among people who’ll always shower you with abundance of love, that’s something you’ll never miss out on. you’re going to grow among people who’d tell you stories of all kind and teach you about the world and more. You’re going to play a lotta games and sing Jana Gana Mana on repeat because that’s what your brothers do, they’re gonna teach you how to sing it so well, In unison. It’s been their music jam and they’ll get you there soon. Infact, they can’t wait for you to join the mad house.
When you grow up, People are gonna tell you how the world was facing a Pandemic the time you were supposed to get down from the safe spot you’d been lying in for nine months to finally step out in a world which was very much opposite to the one you were in for all the while. Your mother went to the hospital saying she’d share her experience of delivering a baby in this tough situation later when you’re here, safe. she seemed happy and stress-free, let me tell you this, Your mother is a great mother, and I don’t tell you this because she’s been a great friend/sister/aunt, but because I’ve watched her take care of your brother, losing sleep on random nights crying cuz she can’t find him, the one who’s been sleeping next to her. I’ve woken up on nights watching her such. My mother says that’s how mothers are, always. Your mother is one, protector, and you’re just about to witness the magic she weaves.
I’ve lived 20 years before you came in here, That’s huge, I feel like an old granny. The first time I felt it was when Aryan was born, But I was little then. I was told he’d call me Ammayi (aunt), Which inturn made me feel like someone who belonged to the 60s, cuz that’s the time my Ammayis were born, otherthan for your mother and her sister who are clearly exemptions because they belonged to the 80s and never gave me the aunt-feels. there were these big sisters who clearly looked younger than me. Aryan ended up calling me Anu chechi, We’ve been best-friends, that’s the relation I share with all of them, So I’m gonna sing you lullabies my mother sang for me, the one they’ve all been singing for all the time I've known them, and I’ll put you to sleep, Watch you like you’re the apple of my eye, which you clearly are. You’re my child, my own, and i’ll do everything in power to protect you, to keep you happy. I’ll tell you about the moments I had with your mother, and your brothers, and things you did with every passing time to remind you that we’ve been nice parents, all of us co- parenting you to give you the best. So I’m guessing you’re call me Sreemole like the rest of them, and is eagerly looking forward to all the special moments, we’re all gonna cherish it all, every bits and pieces.
You’re welcome to this mad house where everyone is a little crazy, with hearts full of love, eagerly waiting for you to conquer the world like you’ve already conquered our hearts. You’ve so many brothers out there waiting for you to join their A-team and steal everyones heart all over again. They can’t wait for you to call them ‘ettah’.
I know it looks a little strange right now, In a hospital with your mother by your side, and a lot of other complications that follow with the risingly - dangerous pandemic, but trust me, the world is not as bad as it looks, here you are to make it better than ever.
Sreemol will be there as soon as this gets over, Until then keep well and be safe. :’))
I Love you.

Simply Superb
Simply superb: My quick take on Prithviraj’s movie ‘Jana Gana Mana’ I am yet to decide if it was the wonderful writing which impressed me or was it the intelligent direction or was it the flawless performances of the entire cast (especially Suraj and Prithviraj). Whatever it could be the final verdict is that JGM is one of the finely written and directed political crime thrillers I have come…
