authors note: pls be gentle this is my first fic
dec 5th 2022 ~ post iowa win against iowa state (dec 4th). score 70-57. kate martin with 13 points.
reader’s pov
the energy in iowa city was booming after last night’s win. i’ve been working at this coffee shop in iowa city since my freshman year of college and i’ve become accustomed to talking “game talk” my entire shift the day after a game, and if any of the players decide to stop in to do homework or for a quick drink, i sympathize as i watch them get trapped into nonstop conversations about basketball. iowa city is extremely proud of and cherishes our women’s basketball team, and quite frankly you never hear the end of it when you’re living here.
our coffee shop gets quite busy everyday, and my shift passes by with ease. as i’m finishing making the last order i took before clocking out, i see two familiar blondes walk in.
“hiiii!!! great game you guys!! your usuals today?”
“hey y/n thank you, yes please! how are you? when are you actually going to come to a game in person!” monika exclaimed. after working here for so long, we’ve developed a genuine friendship, sometimes catching up for a drink or just enjoying each other’s company in our apartments.
“i know, i know.. i promise i will before the season ends!” i laughed as i made their drinks. “kate, you did really good last night, i really wish i could’ve been there”.
i could see kate blushing out of the corner of my eye as I finished making their drinks, and monika nudging her. “y/n i am going to drag you to the next home game myself, kate always looks around and hopes you’re the-“ monika was interrupted by kate obnoxiously faking a cough attack. i laughed, blushing and handed them their drinks. as i handed kate her drink, our fingertips slightly touched and we made eye contact.
“in the meantime maybe we can go to open gym tonight? i can rebound for you and give you time to reenact some of your moves from the game for me” i said as i smiled up at kate with my eyebrows raised. although i was NOT short, yet kate disagrees, she was still 8 inches taller than me as I stood at 5’4. “we can meet at my apartment at 6 if you’re up for it”.
kate knew what i was doing. i knew what i was doing.
kate’s pov
my palms were immediately sweating. i looked down at her and honestly just forgot every single thing she’s said since i walked in because i cannot stop looking at her eyes and how well they compliment her dark hair, she just dyed it - i can tell. My eyes scan over her exposed tattoos on her arm and i quickly look back into her eyes so i don’t look like more of a creep than i already do.
“6pm is good. i’ll be there. at 6”, i tried playing it cool. she laughed, shaking her head and saying her quick goodbyes as she had to rush to her 2 o’clock class.
“you know you said 6 twice. i think she knew what time considering SHE asked YOU” monika explained while almost tumbling over laughing. “i mean kate, you should’ve seen your face. you two have been doing this for a year now. why have you not made a move on her? she’s clearly interested in you”
i sighed, “monika I don’t know. i really do like her but it’s just scary. i don’t know if i can commit to something, especially right now. basketball is our life and how will someone ever be able to fall in love with me if i can only see them for a few hours a week?” monika rubbed my shoulder and brought me in for a hug.
“just because you are a D1 athlete does not mean this is your entire life. you still deserve to have a life outside of basketball, and if anyone, she would be the most understanding” monika said, “you’ve got to make a move before she gives up. i know she’s into you kate. you deserve to feel and be loved”.
she really always was right.
we spent the rest of the day doing homework together and making lunch. as it got closer to 6, i could feel the knots in my stomach getting worse. luckily, we lived in the same apartment complex so it was a quick walk to her apartment.
5:55pm and i’m already at her door. is that too early? too desperate?
i knock a few times to let her know i’m here. i could just say i came early so i could see her cats
i looked down twiddling my thumbs, patiently waiting.
“coming!” i heard faintly from her apartment. she opened the door and quickly embraced me.
“kate hi! i just have to feed my cats before we leave so just come in for a minute” she said while frantically trying to feed her cats before they tried jumping into the food. i stepped into her apartment and patiently waited, laughing as her cats were jumping up her legs and meowing.
“you know, i’ve always been a dog person but i love your cats. they are just so adorable and have such a personality” i remarked.
“hah yeah, you can take them whenever. they are the best for cuddling but feeding them is still terrifying” she laughed.
she collected her bag, which i offered to hold, her water bottle and keys. we locked up her apartment and walked down to her car.
“midnights?” we asked in unison, both laughing after realizing we jinxed each other. i adore that she loves taylor swift almost as much as i do. i plugged in my phone to her aux and shuffled the album. as we started driving to our practice gym, i couldn’t help but steal glances at her, imagining what it would be like if we were more than friends, if i wasn’t so scared, i thought. i wouldn’t be afraid to hold her hand or her thigh while one of us drives. i wouldn’t be afraid to kiss her at every red light. i wouldn’t be afraid of love with her.
we pulled into the parking lot and i quickly grabbed both of our bags, and we made our way inside. no one had the practice gym booked for tonight, so it was just us. i put in my code to enter the gym, and we settled our stuff down.
“so.. what are we doing today coach kate” she smiled widely at me. i grinned and grabbed the rack of basketballs, pulling it next to the free throw line.
“well, let’s work on some free throw shots first”.
readers pov
after an hour of rebounding for kate and even taking some shots for myself, i decided to line myself up at the free throw line. i was never one to play sports, but i’ve always loved watching them. i’ve always been so jealous of people’s hand-eye coordination, as it never seemed to work for me which led to me burying myself in studies and clubs for years.
i try to fix my form like kate taught me, then launched it.
miss.
again, i grabbed another ball and launched it.
miss.
and again, and again. miss. miss. miss.
kate stifled a laugh watching me, and as i turned to glare at her she put her arms up in surrender.
“here, let me help you. we’ve already gone over this y/n, are you missing on purpose?” she questioned. i shook my head, my breath getting faster the closer she got to me. i faced the basket with the ball in my hands hoping to hide my blush.
“here, move over a little” kate said as she put her hands on my waist, moving me to the right a little. “now put your right hand here, and your left hand here” she said as she guided my hands from behind. all i could focus on was her breath on my neck and how close our bodies were without touching. “now shoot”
straight net.
“see! you can do it! but, can you guard me?” she questioned as she quickly knocked the new ball out of my hands, dribbling away from me.
“kate, of course i can guard you” i laughed chasing after her. we played 1 on 1 for a few minutes, her scoring on me multiple times and me not even able to keep the ball in my hands for more than a minute. as i jumped up to block her shot, i tumbled over her as we both fell to the ground. her arms were quick to grab my waist to ensure i fell on her instead of the hard wood court.
“kate!” i exclaimed laughing, “you could’ve hurt yourself and lisa would have actually hunted me down and killed me!”
we were both laughing as i rolled off of her and laid next to her on the ground. she turned over to look at me with a wide smile. we grabbed each other’s hands as we helped each other up, yet i stumbled into her again.
“a little clumsy tonight aren’t we?” she teased. her hands hesitant to continue holding my waist as we stood centimeters apart.
“i guess you just make me a little nervous” i confidently stated. our eyes stayed locked in for a minute, and for a split second i swore i saw her look at my lips, until she quickly pulled away almost breaking out in a sprint to our bags.
“we should get going, the janitors will be here soon to start locking up” she hurriedly said.
with a heavy sigh, i walked towards the exit grabbing my keys and water bottle as we made our way to the exit.
-
the car ride to the apartment complex was silent. i felt uneasy. is it me? is she just not into me? i thought. as i pulled in to my spot, kate offered to walk me back up to my apartment. the walk was long,
and silent. as i got to my door, i pulled out my key as fast as i could to unlock the door. “thank you for walking me kate, goodnight” i said as i tried rushing into my apartment. before i could shut my door, she put her hand out to hold it open”
“wait y/n,” she hesitated, “there’s been something i’ve been meaning to do for a while now”. kate strides towards me, reaching out to put one hand on my hip and one hand on my check, quickly pulling me up towards her and before i knew it, she kissed me.
she really kissed me.
her lips were soft. i could feel our smiles through the kiss and my heart nearly beating out of my chest, i wonder if she felt it too. kate pulled away first, looking down at me smiling, moving both hands to my cheeks.
“goodnight y/n” she said as she kissed my forehead. she backed away towards the door, and left before i could say a word.
i sheepishly slid my back down the cold wooden front door and made my way down to the floor. between the heat on my cheeks, tingling sensation on my lips, and the sound of my heartbeat thumping through my chest, nothing else in the world mattered in that moment. i delicately brought my finger to my lips, trying to relive the feeling through the sensations. my cheeks were hot and hurting. 'have I ever smiled this big in my life?', I thought. my legs slightly shaking as i slowly got up, making my way through my apartment to my bedroom. everything was bright even with all of my lights off. i sat down at my vanity, staring at myself in the mirror. through the slight shine of the exposed moonlight, i could see the red and pink flush all over my face. my phone buzzed in my sweater pocket.
i had a great time, the text read, see you tmrw for my usual? :)
i held the phone to my chest tightly, feeling the coldness of the screen through my clothes, but nothing else was cold. everything was warm because she kissed me.

okay so for the proposed very funny 'secretly half vulcan spock' modern coffeeshop AU scenario sparked by that concretes post, the only reasonable way i can see to set this up (without messing up vulcan culture in ways that would annoy me) is if Sarek crash-landed in Canada--probably alone in an escape pod, although if we want to make him the only survivor of a larger vessel coming down who evaded the government that could work too.
anyway Sarek doesn't have a sciences background to the extent Spock does, so i feel that finding himself in a 'stone knives and bearskins' scenario would be a bigger problem for him, and he'd have a great deal more trouble working around issues like 'i need some platinum to make this machine work' and his partner is like 'lol well i got bread.'
so he's stuck in canada trying to signal Vulcan for surreptitious rescue, and in the meantime he falls in with Amanda Grayson and they get him a fake identity and fulfill some cliches. and to their surprise they're reproductively viable, hello Spock.
so this fic is set like 20 years later and Spock is in college. i want to say in iowa because that's the natural habitat of jim kirk but spock is too much of a goddamn snob to go to school in iowa, they have no Notable Institutions, sorry iowa.
maybe he's got an associate professorship at the University of Iowa; academic job market sucks. Or maybe Jim left Iowa as soon as possible, being how he is, and they're in Big City.
the older they are the more you can stick them anywhere on earth for this. the younger they are, the more easily you can justify spock picking up a part-time job at the coffee shop. depends on where you want to go with the story.
anyway Jim runs (owner? manager?) the Not Starbucks indie coffee shop where Spock goes all the time (to get Not Coffee) and Spock being secretly half alien doesn't come up for ten chapters, except for how he comes across as spectacularly autistic and never takes off his stupid headband that covers his ears and eyebrows even when it's 102F.

Hi jen, I just discovered your blog and I’m sure it’s been asked before but i was wondering how you manage life in the countryside. When I’m older I’d love to move into a rural area but i’m afraid of the costs, loneliness, and possibly not having access to good healthcare.
I bought this house with my first girlfriend in 1999. We were naive and idiots in love and all we knew is we wanted a house in the country.
My suggestion would be the midwest, and not because I am biased but there is a whole lot of "live and let live" attitude. Buy land with existing septic and well if you can. Make sure you are within driving (less than an hour, the closer the better) of a fairly large city. I am 40 minutes from Iowa City and 15 from Cedar Rapids. Those rural areas are far less scary for lesbians than very rural and isolated areas. My county is red but even the county seat is blue (small town).
Talk to the local librarian, they tend to know about the people. Get involved in volunteering whereever you land. Find the Democrats, even if you are NOT one and go to the meetings. You can meet at least friendly faces and make connections.
You will need a job to maintain land. So make sure you can either access good internet for on line work OR can commute to a decent job (this is where proximity to a bigger city is helpful ) But positions within small city governments or with the county can pay decently as well.
Commit to some travel once a year. Figure out who will care for animals/house at least once a year so you can go to women's festivals, other lesbian or women's land or other gathering just to meet other "land dykes" or just other lesbians to then stay connected with on line over the rest of the year.
I am 45 minutes from one of the best hospitals in the USA and 20 minutes from a major medical center in Cedar Rapids. Insurance in Iowa can be affordable if you are lower income OR can get it through a job. Many small hospitals take cash or facilitate payment and are way less than bigger once for smaller procedures or check ups. Having local connections can make all the difference and that is why i suggest volunteering and being "seen" in your community.
I shop at the local feed store, not because I there aren't other options but because he now knows me. I chat with others in the tiny lobby over coffee in styrofoam cups and they in turn see me at the gas station of the farm I work at. A familiar friendly face is way less scary than "that lesbo that lives in that one house".
The magazine Countryside is slightly conservative BUT full of great information about rural life, fixing things, making do with what you have, animal husbandry, food growing etc.
If you can afford this book, check out my article on rural life as an out lesbian. The book as lots of interesting ideas and writings.

Bill Sackter was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1913, born to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. His father passed when he was 7 due to the Spanish flu, and the same year Sackter struggled in school. After taking a mandatory intelligence test, the state sentenced a verdict that placed him in the Faribault State School for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic. He stayed there for 44 years.
In 1964, when new treatments were being introduced for people with disabilities, Sackter was moved to a halfway house where he worked to support himself, and made friends with filmmaker Barry Morrow and his wife. As their friendship evolved, Marrow became Sackter's guardian, and when Marrow got a job at the University of Iowa, Sackter followed him to Iowa City where he became the proprietor of Wild Bill's Coffee shop.

Wild Bill's Coffee Shop -- The late Tom Walz, a former director and professor in the UI School of Social work, created Wild Bill's Coffee Shop in 1975 to provide work for Sackter. Walz put him in charge of running the small coffee service located in North Hall. The coffee shop employed individuals with disabilities and served as both a job site for them and a learning lab for social work students.
In 2021, 46 years of service, the shop determined that because other coffee shops and kiosks in the area were hiring individuals with disabilities, that they would close down the coffee shop and instead make the now renamed "Wild Bill's" into a "community space, makers' space, and classroom" and that the space will still "collaborate with the disabilities community to include people with disabilities in the school’s social justice advocacy, and carry on the legacy of innovative social work faculty who came before."
Apart from the coffee shop, Bill Sackter was busy working with media groups that were interested in his life. Walz created a written biography about him, while Marrow co-wrote a movie about his life titled Bill (1981). That movie did so well it earned a sequel: Bill on His Own (1983). From the movie Bill, here at UIowa we have the Emmy and the Emmy Award video that the movie won. We also have the documentary that was made about Sackter's life titled "A Friend Indeed – The Bill Sackter Story."

Did you know..
that according to the CDC, 1 in 4 adults in the US have some type of disability, 1 in 4 adults (45-64) have not had a routine check-up in the past year, 1 in 3 (18-44) adults with disabilities have an unmet healthcare need because of costs, don't have a usual health care provider, and that many individuals with disabilities are unable to get married without losing their benefits? September first we set out on our day trip. Through Kenosha County, Walworth County, and Rock County, I thought of all the boys I’ve loved from those small towns and others, oh my small town boys. Then Beloit, and the Rock River; I hadn’t been there in over twenty years. And Big Foot Beach State Park, where I found a fairy circle near the old playground. (We stayed a safe distance away, at the newer playground.) And to and from and in-between, we took the backroads, blue highways through the weird small towns, stopped when we felt like it. In parks and parking lots, I made friends of strangers. Saw hills and horses and hay bales; wind rippling through the corn. Broken-down barns and silos. Turkey vultures, hawks, sandhill cranes. Rattlesnake master and black-eyed Susans. A tree that had been split nearly clean down the middle by lightning, with one side still living and the other dead. A run-down antique store that seemed to specialize in Christian iconography. Swamp Angel Road.
It was good to travel, even just for that little stretch of miles and hours, but instead of scratching my restless itch it made it worse. Travel and sex can both be like that, for me. I can go a long while without them, and at first it’s terrible, my constant longing. But after a while that longing fades to a dull ache. And then I fuck, or take a little trip, and even if it’s really good—especially if it’s really good—it doesn’t satisfy me. It just reminds me how much I need it. And then it’s terrible again, the kind of relentless desire that would only be sated by driving hundreds of miles a day or having hundreds of orgasms a day, and probably not even then.
Speaking of longing. The end of summer/creeping into autumn nostalgia is thick upon me. I’m thinking of all the lives I’ve lived in this one lifetime. I’m thinking of Augusts and Septembers past. Thinking of 1997, Door County. Me and Ali getting stoned at the coffee shop, reading Kerouac. And Princess Di died and my Auntie was dying, that trip to Door County was the last time I saw her alive and she spent most of the time glued to the 24-hour news of Diana’s death. Thinking of 2003. Heartbreak and perpetual motion. Montreal and New York City and Cincinnati. 2004; Iowa and Look Homeward, Angel. (O lost, and by the wind grieved, ghost, come back again.) 2006; Oshkosh and the girl I loved. 2007; Milwaukee, and meeting my rain dog boy. 2008; Thee Hobo Love Tour. Emchy and I opening our show every night with our duet rendition of Concrete Blonde’s “Side of the Road.” St. Louis, and the cats we opened for asking me to jump in with my accordion when they covered Bob Dylan’s “Buckets of Rain.” And New Orleans, New Orleans, New Orleans. 2009; driving cross-country with P. to begin our new life in Oakland together. And all the other years and...
I’m here sending mail to far-flung (and not-so-far) pals in Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Kenosha, and Oakland. Listening to sad bastard music, missing playing music, and my friends, and my favorite places, and everything else, all the time.

Have you ever found yourself circling the block countless times, desperately searching for a parking spot in downtown Des Moines? If so, you're certainly not alone. Navigating the parking scene in DSM can be quite the challenge for both locals and visitors alike. But fear not! In this article, we're here to help you unlock the parking mystery that plagues our city and guide you towards becoming a parking pro in Des Moines. From parking tips and tricks to lesser-known spots and cost-effective options, we'll provide you with all the essential information you need to make your parking experience a breeze, ensuring that you can focus on enjoying all the incredible attractions our city has to offer.
Best parking options in DSM
Navigating the parking scene in Downtown Des Moines (DSM) can sometimes feel like trying to solve a mystery. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to find the best parking spot that suits your needs. Whether you're a local or a visitor, we've got you covered with some of the top parking options in DSM.
Metered parking dsm parking is one of the most common parking options in DSM. Located throughout the downtown area, metered parking allows you to pay for your parking time via coins, credit cards, or through mobile payment apps. This option is perfect if you're planning a quick visit to a restaurant, coffee shop, or retail store. Just remember to check the time restrictions and rates before leaving your vehicle.
If you're planning on spending a couple of hours exploring the downtown area, public parking ramps are a convenient option. DSM offers several parking ramps that provide ample space for your vehicle. These ramps are strategically located in close proximity to popular attractions, shopping centers, and cultural establishments. With the convenience of a covered parking facility, you can rest easy knowing your car is safe from the elements while you enjoy your time in DSM.
For those looking for an affordable parking option, surface lots are a great choice. These large open spaces offer parking at reasonable rates and are often situated near popular destinations, including the Iowa State Capitol and the East Village. Keep in mind that surface lots tend to fill up quickly during peak hours, so it's advisable to arrive early or have a backup plan in case the lot is full.
Another parking option that's gaining popularity in DSM is the use of parking apps. These apps provide real-time information about available parking spots, rates, and even allow you to pay for your parking without the hassle of searching for loose change. By utilizing these apps, you can save time and ensure a stress-free parking experience. Just download the app, enter your destination, and let it guide you to the nearest parking spot.
If you're attending an event in DSM, it's worth considering event-specific parking options. Many venues offer designated parking areas, either onsite or nearby, specifically for event attendees. These parking spaces are convenient and reduce the stress of finding parking in a busy area. Check the event details or website for information about dedicated parking lots or shuttle services that may be available.
Lastly, if you're a frequent visitor to downtown DSM, investing in a monthly parking pass may be a worthwhile option. With a monthly pass, you have the convenience of a reserved parking space without the need to worry about time restrictions or searching for available spots. Monthly passes are available for specific parking ramps or lots, so inquire with the parking management office for more information.
In conclusion, navigating the parking scene in DSM doesn't have to be a mystery. From metered parking to public ramps, surface lots to parking apps, there are plenty of options to suit your needs and preferences. Consider the duration of your visit, affordability, convenience, and event-specific parking options when deciding where to park. With a little planning and exploration, you can unlock the best parking spot in DSM and enjoy your time in the downtown area hassle-free.
Tips for finding free parking in DSM
When it comes to parking in Des Moines, it can sometimes feel like a complicated puzzle. However, with a little insider knowledge and some helpful tips, you can navigate the city's parking scene like a pro. If you're looking to save some money and find that elusive free parking spot, read on for some valuable guidance.
1. Timing is Everything
One of the best ways to secure free parking in DSM is to plan your visit during non-peak hours. Downtown areas are usually busier during weekdays, especially during regular office hours. If you can schedule your visit for early mornings, evenings, or weekends, you'll have a better chance of finding free parking spots. Keep in mind that certain areas may have time-limited free parking, so make sure to check the signs and regulations.
2. Look for Street Parking
While it may require a bit of patience and luck, street parking in Des Moines can be a fantastic option for free parking. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the city's parking regulations. Look for areas where there are no parking meters or time restrictions. Keep an eye out for streets further away from popular attractions or business centers, as they often have less restricted parking.
3. Explore Residential Areas
If you're willing to explore a bit beyond the bustling neighborhoods, you might find free parking in residential areas near the downtown core. Many residential streets have no parking meters, though be cautious and make sure you're not parking in front of someone's driveway or violating any local parking restrictions. Always respect the residents and their property.
4. Utilize Parking Apps and Websites
In today's digital age, technology can be your best friend when it comes to finding free parking in Des Moines. There are several parking apps and websites that provide up-to-date information on parking availability, rates, and free parking locations in the city. Utilize these resources to plan your trip and increase your chances of finding a free spot.
5. Public Transportation and Park-and-Ride Options
Another way to avoid the parking headache in DSM is to consider using public transportation or park-and-ride facilities. Use the city's reliable bus system to get to your destination hassle-free while saving money on parking fees. Alternatively, park your vehicle at designated park-and-ride lots located on the outskirts of the city and take public transportation to your destination. This option not only saves you money but also contributes to reducing traffic congestion within the city center.
6. Be Mindful of Events and Festivals
Des Moines is known for its vibrant events and festivals throughout the year, which often attract large crowds. During such occasions, finding free parking can be particularly challenging. It's relatively common for event organizers to offer free shuttle services from designated parking areas outside the downtown area. Keep an eye out for these options and plan your parking strategy accordingly.
By following these tips, you can simplify the process of finding free parking in Des Moines. Remember to plan ahead, embrace technology, and stay informed about parking regulations. With a little patience and perseverance, you'll be able to unlock the parking mystery and enjoy your time in DSM without breaking the bank. Happy parking!
Navigating parking garages in DSM
Ah, parking garages – the enigmatic concrete structures that can either make or break your day in downtown Des Moines. With their endless levels and confusing signage, trying to find the perfect spot for your vehicle can often feel like solving a complex puzzle. But fear not, fellow car owners! We're here to unlock the mysteries of DSM's parking garages and turn you into a pro at navigating them.
First things first, let's talk about the different types of parking garages you'll encounter in Des Moines. There are two main categories – public and private. Public garages are owned and operated by the city, while private garages are owned by individual businesses or organizations. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to weigh your options before making a decision.
Public garages are typically located in high-traffic areas, such as downtown or near popular attractions. They offer convenience and easy access to various destinations, making them a popular choice for many. However, they can also be quite busy during peak hours, so arriving early or utilizing alternative modes of transportation might be a good idea.
Private garages, on the other hand, are often connected to specific businesses, hotels, or residential buildings. They may offer reserved parking spaces or reduced rates for tenants or customers, which can be a significant perk if you frequent the associated establishment. Keep in mind that private garages may have limited availability to the general public, so it's essential to check for any restrictions or requirements before attempting to park there.
Now, let's dive into some practical tips for navigating parking garages in DSM like a pro. Firstly, familiarize yourself with the different entrances and exits of the garage you plan to use. This will make it easier to find your way in and out without getting disoriented. Take note of any specific landmarks or signage that can help guide you back to your vehicle, especially if you'll be returning after dark.
Be mindful of the height restrictions in each garage. Some garages may have lower clearance levels, making them unsuitable for larger vehicles like trucks or SUVs. If you drive a taller vehicle, it's crucial to choose a garage that can accommodate your height requirements to avoid any unwanted surprises.
When it comes to finding an open spot, patience is key. It's tempting to race through the levels in search of the nearest vacant space, but this can often lead to frustration and wasted time. Instead, take a deep breath, drive slowly, and keep an eye out for any vacant spots along the way. Remember to follow the designated arrows and one-way signs to maintain a smooth flow of traffic within the garage.
Finally, always remember where you parked! In the sea of vehicles, it's easy to lose track of your exact parking spot. Make a mental note of the floor, section, or any other distinguishing features that can help you locate your vehicle later on. Utilizing smartphone apps or taking a photo of your surroundings can also be helpful tools in ensuring a stress-free return to your car.
So, there you have it a guide to navigating parking garages in DSM like a true professional. By understanding the different types of garages available, paying attention to the finer details, and practicing patience, your parking adventures in downtown Des Moines will be a breeze. Happy parking!
How to avoid parking tickets in DSM
Parking tickets can be a major inconvenience and an unwanted expense. The last thing you want to deal with when going about your day in Des Moines (DSM) is a dreaded parking ticket. To help you navigate the parking scene like a pro and avoid these pesky citations, we have some useful tips and tricks for you.
1. Understand the parking regulations:
The first step in avoiding parking tickets is to educate yourself about the parking regulations in DSM. Different areas may have different rules, so it's essential to know what is and isn't allowed in each location. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the various parking signs and their meanings. Some areas may have time restrictions, while others may have specific rules about parking meters or residential zones. By understanding these regulations, you'll be better equipped to park legally and avoid any unnecessary fines.
2. Read the signs:
Once you understand the parking regulations, always take a moment to read the signs before parking your vehicle. Signs provide valuable information about parking restrictions, time limits, and any other special requirements. Pay close attention to signs that indicate no parking zones, loading zones, or handicapped parking areas. Ignoring or misinterpreting these signs can lead to unforeseen parking violations.
3. Utilize parking apps:
In the digital age, parking apps can be a real game-changer. These apps provide real-time information on available parking spaces, prices, and even allow you to pay for your parking remotely. By using a parking app, you can ensure that you park in permitted areas and avoid overstaying your welcome. Additionally, some apps offer reminders when your parking time is about to expire, helping you avoid tickets for expired meters.
4. Keep an eye on the time:
One common reason for parking tickets is exceeding the allowed parking time. Whether you're parked at a metered spot or in a limited-time zone, it's crucial to keep track of the time. Set a reminder on your phone or use an alarm to avoid overstaying your welcome. Being mindful of the time will help you avoid unnecessary fines and ensure that you're following the parking regulations.
5. Consider alternative transportation options:
If you often find yourself struggling to find legal parking spaces, you may want to explore alternative transportation options. Des Moines offers a range of public transportation options, such as buses and light rail systems, which can alleviate the stress of finding parking altogether. Additionally, carpooling or ride-sharing services can be convenient alternatives that reduce the need for parking.
6. Plan ahead:
Planning ahead can save you from parking ticket woes. If you know you'll be visiting a popular area or attending an event in DSM, take the time to research available parking options. Look for parking garages or lots nearby, or consider pre-booking a parking spot if applicable. By planning in advance, you can ensure a stress-free parking experience and minimize the chances of receiving a ticket.
In conclusion, avoiding parking tickets in DSM requires a combination of knowledge, preparation, and mindfulness. Educate yourself about the parking regulations, read the signs, and utilize parking apps to save time and money. Be mindful of the parking time limits and explore alternative transportation options when possible. By following these tips, you'll be able to navigate the parking scene like a pro and avoid those pesky parking tickets.
Alternative transportation options for avoiding parking in DSM
When navigating the parking scene in DSM, it can often feel like playing a game of musical chairs. The constant search for a parking spot can be frustrating and time-consuming, leaving you feeling stressed before you even reach your destination. However, there are plenty of alternative transportation options available in DSM that can help you avoid the hassle of parking altogether. Whether you're a local or just visiting, here are some great alternatives to consider.
First and foremost, DSM has an extensive public transportation system that can easily get you where you need to go. The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) operates buses throughout the city, offering convenient routes and schedules. With multiple bus stops located all around DSM, you can hop on a bus and rest assured that you won't have to worry about finding parking. Plus, using public transportation not only reduces the stress of finding parking but also helps to reduce your carbon footprint, making it a more sustainable option.
If you're someone who enjoys a little exercise, biking can be a fantastic alternative to parking in DSM. The city has an extensive network of bike trails and designated bike lanes, making it easy and safe to get around on two wheels. You can rent a bike from one of the many bike-sharing programs available in DSM or bring your own. Biking not only saves you from the frustrations of parking but also offers health benefits and a pleasant way to explore the city.
For shorter trips or quick errands, walking is an underrated but effective means of avoiding parking hassles. DSM has a compact and pedestrian-friendly downtown area, complete with well-maintained sidewalks and crosswalks. Whether you're heading to a nearby shop or restaurant, taking a stroll can be a refreshing way to get around and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city. Plus, walking allows you to avoid the stress of parking altogether and offers opportunities for spontaneous discoveries that you might miss when driving.
Another alternative transportation option gaining popularity in DSM is ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft. With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can easily secure a ride to your destination without the need to worry about parking. These services provide door-to-door transportation, and you can even split the cost with friends or colleagues traveling to the same location. Using ride-sharing services not only saves you from the parking madness but also provides convenience and flexibility in your travels.
Lastly, if your destination is within a reasonable distance, electric scooters can provide a fun and efficient way to avoid parking challenges in DSM. The city has seen a surge in electric scooter-sharing services, where you can rent a scooter and zip through the streets with ease. These scooters are environmentally friendly and allow you to maneuver through traffic and find parking quickly. Just be sure to follow the rules and regulations for scooter usage to ensure your safety and that of others.
In conclusion, there are numerous alternative transportation options available in DSM that can help you sidestep the challenges of parking. Taking advantage of the city's public transportation, biking, walking, ride-sharing services, or utilizing electric scooters can dramatically reduce the stress and frustration often associated with finding parking spots. So the next time you're heading into downtown DSM or any other bustling area, consider these alternative options and enjoy a smooth and hassle-free journey!
In conclusion, navigating the parking scene in DSM can seem like a mystery, but with a few tips and tricks, you can unlock the secrets and become a parking pro! By planning ahead, considering alternative options, and staying informed about parking regulations, you can save time and frustration when it comes to finding a parking spot. Remember to use technology to your advantage, take advantage of parking apps, and explore different parking options in the city. With these strategies in hand, you'll be able to park with ease and enjoy all that DSM has to offer. So get out there, explore the city, and confidently conquer the parking mystery!

Hill Harper Announces Senate Bid In Michigan
Hill Harper, an actor known for his roles in film and television announced on Monday that he is running for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat and challenging U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin for the Democratic nomination.
Harper is the sixth Democratic candidate to enter the race for retiring Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s seat. Stabenow announced in January that she would not be seeking a fifth term in 2024 in the battleground state.
Born in Iowa, Harper owns a house in Detroit and bought a coffee shop, Roasting Plant Coffee, in the city in 2017. He attended Brown University and Harvard Law School before becoming an actor.
Harper was appointed to President Barack Obama’s cancer panel in 2012 as a survivor of the disease himself.
In an interview with The Associated Press before his announcement, Harper described himself as a small-business owner, a union member and an activist. He said that not being a “career politician” would serve as an advantage in Congress and that he plans to run a campaign “powered by the people, for the people.”
“It’s not about party. It’s about people feeling represented,” Harper said. “And being an independent voice in the U.S. Senate is something I believe Michiganders want right now.”
Harper faces a tough test in catching Slotkin in both fundraising and campaigning. Slotkin has raised $5.8 million in just over four months, according to her campaign, and $3.6 million of it remains unspent. She has been endorsed by fellow U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, a Democrat who represents parts of suburban Detroit.
Many top Democratic candidates who had been considering a run for the Senate opted against it before Slotkin’s February announcement, seemingly clearing the field for the third-term representative who rose to prominence by consistently winning one of the nation’s most competitive House seats. -(source: nbc news)

Virgil's Orange Cream Soda was a favorite specialty soda pop back in the day at Uptown Bill's in Iowa City. At times, there were more than 30 specialty sodas in the pop cooler at the coffee house.
