Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the Best Video Game
Tumblr media
Now that I'm back on this hellsite (affectionately), I'm going to do something that I never did back in the day: actually post about stuff that I like. To start, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
I've played this game about 12 times. In fact, I make a point to play this game once a year as a New Year's tradition. This last year, I even streamed my attempt to speedrun it to an audience of at least two people (Including one ass hat who burst in to tell me Betty White died mid-run). I mention all of this not just to show how much of this game I have played, but how much this game has stayed in my consciousness, occupied my gray matter, and overrun the little jukebox in my head. I can't even make it through a day without hearing somebody screaming RULES OF NATURE because without it I simply will not have the raw fury needed to spite Death every day.
Now let me take you on a journey.

In December 2014, I was neck-deep in my first Steam Winter Sale. I had only entered college the year before and just bought my first desktop. Now able to buy/play any video game I wanted without my parents looking over my shoulder (or purchase history), I decided that I'd finally get into the Metal Gear franchise. Lucky me, there's one on sale for $5.99, called Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. I buy it and a mass of other games (including Divinity: Original Sin, Transistor, Rogue Legacy... and a bunch still hiding in the backlogs). Don't know what happened, cause I straight up didn't play it until August 2015. I think I was modding Skyrim for the first time.
Anyway, I played it, jammed to the soundtrack, had some trouble with the Armstrong fight (the mouse controls for Blade Mode are still kinda rubbish on PC), and finished the game over the course of a week. MGR:R proceeded to yeet out of my memory banks, save for the occasional RULES OF NATURE or A Stranger I Remain.

Cut to December 2016.
I did not have a good December 2016, watching America bumblefuck its way to electing a racist Cheeto president. I was looking for something to make sense of it all.
Then it hit me harder than Armstrong's nanomachine encrusted fist.

I knew I had heard that damn dogwhistle somewhere before, and I found it again (actually, it might have been Tumblr that reminded me... I have the memory of a Kirby plush from Walmart.
Anyway, I decided to play MGR:R again, this time taking in the lyrics of the songs, the miscellaneous Codec messages, the stories of all the major villains, heck I even played through Jetstream Sam and Blade Wolf's DLC missions that I *completely missed* the first time around.
My first playthrough was like a solid date: a lot to love, but maybe came on a little strong and left me reeling so hard I had to ghost them just to put all the pieces together.
Date 2 made me want to sign the paperwork right there and then, cause I'd found The One.

It has been nearly seven years since I first played MGR:R, and every time I find something new. I'll gladly share some of the things I've found if anyone is interested (and even if you aren't, I'm gonna tell ya anyway. B)
But to bamboozle your brains like this game did to me, I'm going to whallop you with the game's Big Ideas and let you sort it out while I finish getting this account set up.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a direct refutation of the Forever Wars post-9/11, a character study about a man unsure if he cuts people in half for the sake of justice or for his own personal enjoyment, a metacommentary about the ways video games trivialize moral choices by providing "correct" answers while indulging in gory glory, and an accidentally prophetic take on the rise of the Alt-Right & how fascist demagogues charm and manipulate a ready-made audience.
Aight, gonna get food, back in a week or twelve, I dunno.
