Overwhelmed by Publishing Goal
Anonymous asked: Writing no longer feels free or easy anymore now that I have dreams of publishing. I’m trying to hone a technique to learn to finish a book a year to be ready for the industry but also like writing at the same time (and with the way I’ve devoured so much writing advice and gotten overwhelmed it feels fun less and less). Like I’m not even sure if I’m meant to be a writer. I don’t even know how to tell. Yes I can come up with an idea but I’m not sure that’s enough to determine that someone is meant to do something. Writing feels like something you have to be “spiritually” or emotionally connected to and I have found that I don’t always feel connected to the entire process. I’m rambling now but I’m just kind of disheartened. Any thoughts?
How to tell if you're a writer:
Do you write? x Yes No Congratulations! You're a writer!!!
Can you imagine if people who spent time knitting weren't allowed to call themselves knitters unless they finished, wore, or sold the things they knit? Or if people who loved to bake weren't allowed to call themselves bakers if they kept what they baked for themselves? Or if loved running and ran two miles every day, but couldn't call yourself a runner unless you'd participated in a marathon?
It's weird that we put all these constraints on being a writer that we don't put on other things.
Now, being an author, on the other hand, does require publication. Whether you self-publish, traditionally publish, or publish on a fiction sharing site, having your work out there for the world to see is what makes you an author.
Do you still get to call yourself a writer if you're overwhelmed and frustrated by the work it takes and the publication process? Um... YES, friend! I think most authors would agree that feeling overwhelmed and frustrated by the publication process is just part of the natural gauntlet one must go through on their journey to becoming an author.
As far as your situation goes, while it's admirable that you're trying to get yourself up to industry speed before you've even hit the publish button or gotten a book deal, you're putting the cart before the horse a little bit. Right now your only focus should be putting together a manuscript that is ready for querying or ready for an editor and publication. That's it. The writing you do in order to get to that point is going to do a lot of the heavy lifting as far as getting you to a place where you can plot and write faster. And you can tweak that process with each book you write.
And the reality is that while traditional publishing does "expect" a book a year, many traditionally published authors who are actually hitting that goal are doing so with a ton of help from others. And they're more likely to be able to dedicate more of their time toward writing. So it's a bit unrealistic to hold yourself up to that goal if you're not even published yet.
Finally, I honestly don't think I know a single author who feels spiritually or emotionally connected to the entire process of writing and publishing. I mean, yeah, ideally we should all feel some level of connection to whatever it is we're working on, but by no stretch of the imagination does that connection extend to every single day or every aspect of the writing and publishing process. So, please don't feel like you're falling short just because you're not having some sort of sacred kinship with every stop of the process.
If you haven't already, you might spend some time reading through the relevant-sounding posts on my Motivation master list. It's got a lot of posts that deal with the different reasons behind burnout and frustration, plus solutions, and some things you can do to make writing fun again.
I hope that helps! ♥

A Practical Guide to Evil
So I've sat with it for most of the day, and while I think I'll be ruminating on it for much longer than that, here are my thoughts.
Obviously, spoilers.
First, Akua Sahelian. Even going in knowing that she was going to get a redemption arc, I was thinking that maybe I misremembered the name, that it was another character that was going to be redeemed. Especially after the demon at Marchford and of course the Doom of Liesse. I will admit to literally squealing when Catherine broke her fucking bones after 1st Liesse. As the story went on, I began to forgive and forget, and to be honest by the middle of Vol. 7 I was like get over it and kiss her, Cat. I guess I just never felt that bad about the Doom after the Everdark, despite the narrative's insistence on reminding me of it. Maybe that's good writing, that I liked Akua so much, maybe not, idk I'm just a little guy.
Hakram was a great character, with a perfect pivot from in Cat's shadow to becoming a man of his own. He was the button that EE could press to ignore all of the logistical issues when the army got big, so that was kind of annoying, but whatever.
Indrani. Around the time that she and Cat finally fucked I was screaming in my head for them to fuck, so that feels right. Really liked her characterization towards the end with the other Refuge refugees, especially the line where Concocter tells her it didn't have to always be a fight. Good shit.
Vivienne was hit or miss for me, she was her own character, but never really felt that important to me, despite obvious narrative importance. Never the same level of emotional connection to me.
Masego, my darling beloved. My sweet perfect boy. My autistic wizard son. I love him. There may be flaws in his character, maybe, but I will never see them. He is the platonic ideal of a wizard to me.
And then Catherine. She went though so many forms of anime magic. Guide truly cemented itself as a shonen to me, just by virtue of never quite knowing what she could actually do. Her characterizations were relatively constant, enough to ground her as a character anyway, but the way that she always had a hidden plan did get a little annoying. It wasn't quite Sherlock Holmes level unrevealed scheming, but there were definitely moments where I groaned out of annoyance, namely when she was take prisoner in Wolof. I'm probably overstating how much wasn't foreshadowed, and I'd guess that for a lot of people the excitement of guessing "how would Cat get out of this one" was fun, but by the end I was rolling my eyes half the time.
Overall I loved it, and I'm definitely going to reread it at some point. It will provide inspiration for my dnd campaign for years to come, and I will be shamelessly stealing characters forever. Kairos Theodosian was incredible, and probably my second favorite character.
My single biggest critique was that there were stretches of like 5 or 6 interludes in a row, which inevitably lead to me saying "Cordelia FUCKING Hasenbach" under my breath

i think richie tozier is really into glam metal. i think as a preteen he was really into rock n' roll because bill was really into rock n' roll, and i think bill would mostly listen to very core rock n' roll, not branch off into sub genres too much, he really appreciates the early stuff i think. but richie, at like 11 years old hears livin' on a prayer on the radio and he's immediately hooked. his parents buy him slippery when wet for his birthday and a bon jovi poster. his parents are pretty clueless about this stuff so wentworth takes him to the store so they get the right one. maggie's pretty sure bon jovi's for girls, but is just excited she isn't going to have to deal with her son playing the same three records over and over again anymore.
when richie's twelve the bon jovi poster gets moved to his door, so that it's hidden when he has it open. he feels guilty when he looks at it. it's his favorite poster though and it gets rotated around his room a lot.
when he's fourteen there's a bon jovi concert in maine and he convinces his parents to let him go so long as his sister goes with him to chaperone. it's a pretty life changing experience for him. his sister ends up really liking the music too, so thats cool. he gets a t-shirt that quickly becomes faded and soft from constant wear.
all the lights and effects and just the energy really flips a switch for him. it's not just bon jovi anymore, he's spending hours in the record store, he gets a job so he can buy a CD player, it takes a ridiculously long time to get to that point.
he also gets big into KISS because of course he does. he probably spends more time looking at the cover of his paul stanley album than he does listening to it. he may spend an unhealthy amount of time gazing longingly into paul stanley's eyes but his favorite is probably ace frehley. he has a ridiculous amount of magazines that he just got for interviews with them. this is the era of glam haircuts for richie. it takes him at least two years to figure out he actually has to style it though, so that's fun.
he tries to make his own music but he's hot garbage at it, he moves on to trying to play his favorite songs on guitar, which he also sucks at, he eventually gets desperate and tries to play on bill's mom's piano. he is swiftly removed from the household. he gets really good at singing his favorite songs though.
i'm not really going anywhere with this. richie tozier likes glam metal. it awakens something gay in him.
you can find some relevant images and some more of my commentary under the cut.
Tumblr media
slippery when wet, the first album richie sought out on his own, and the beginning of the end of his heterosexuality.
Tumblr media
i'm not going to say this is the poster, because i don't know enough about this stuff to confirm if this poster would've been sold around the right time. but you get the picture. ideally it would be this exact poster, but i'm not picky. i think richie comes home from school one day and looks at this poster and has a fucking. biblical experience. like it's just a normal school day, and then he just goes home, closes his bedroom door, turns around to take off his shoes, and stares this man straight in the eye and just thinks "holy shit he's beautiful" i think the poster sleeps in the closet that night.
Tumblr media
this is the paul stanley album i'm talking about. i think this is also richie's main haircut inspiration, but it takes him years to figure out what hairspray is. lucky for him his hair is naturally curly so he didn't look too stupid, but things weren't ideal.
i think he takes a lot of style influence from various musicians, but he's never willing to part with his dear patterned button ups, so his workaround is: obnoxious button up + leather jacket as we saw in the movie.
he really likes cinderella, and feels a little betrayed when they change genre direction in the 90s. i think he sees tom keifer
Tumblr media
wearing a lot of jewellery and decides he also wants to wear a lot of jewellery but ends up either hating it, or forgetting it, he also never convinces his parents to get his ears pierced. if he ever manages it, it's because bev did it herself, she probably screwed it up pretty bad too, and he just ends up with some pretty gnarly scaring on his right ear.

Can I please request headcanons for Hanzo, Erron, Liu Kang, and Kung Lao trying to woo a woman who's cynical and snarky about love due to being betrayed and abandoned when she was diagnosed with cancer which she went through and survived all on her own?
Absolutely! It’s not perfect, but I hope it works well! :D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
Hanzo - Hanzo understands that you suffered greatly through the abandonment and treatments, finding your resilience to be admirable - He’d keep a bit of distance between the two of you to respect your space while he works through how to make a stronger connection - Your more cynical outlook is something he can relate to from his younger years, but just like how he rebuilt the Shirai Ryu, he hopes to rebuild your trust in others- or at least in him - His approach is as gentle as he can: Walks around the fire gardens, helping with anything you might need help with, and bringing little meals he made for you The pain you experienced hit him hard, as the idea of abandoning someone for something they couldn’t control was something that he couldn’t grasp. So, when you captured his heart, he knew he had to tread carefully, not wanting to push the wrong button on you. He’ll often slip a comment or two in on how he sees you, as delicate as the flowers that bloom on the trees in the gardens; or how your warmth reminds him of a slow, steady warmth of the sun. And he’ll remind you that you’re not alone anymore, that you don’t have to merely survive, but can now thrive. When he got close enough to be considered your lover, he was on cloud nine; though at no point did he try to change you, if you remained on the cynical side he’d understand, but would never feed into it either.
Tumblr media
Erron - The cynicism was shared, though for different reasons; he was jaded from his family being less than ideal his whole life before he escaped - The abandonment you suffered through struck a chord in him that removed quite a bit of his snark, falling into a quieter demeanor - His approaches weren’t his smoothest, but it was earnest: Offers for horseback rides to clear the mind, mindless talks by a campfire with some food, and likely at least one or two times of playing the guitar for you - He never tries to change you, but may accidentally feed into the cynicism without meaning to, always apologizing for the times he does His first few attempts at getting closer weren’t his smoothest, fumbling over his words and missing a string or two in his guitar plays for you; but he doesn’t give up. He persisted as gently as he could, checking up on you when he could and bringing back little gifts, he thought you might like from when he travels. When he gets close enough to be a lover, you’ll find he melts, no longer the cold, hard cowboy from Outworld; instead having become a softer, warmer man who respects the cynicism as an inevitable result of abandonment. Sometimes he’ll still fumble on his guitar, but now laughs it off as just being too caught up in how much he loves you.
Tumblr media
Liu Kang - Your cynicism caught him off guard at first, but he respected that what you went through was intense and cruel - He does his best to make you smile, whether it be through cracking lighthearted jokes, or performing little tricks - Your experiences opened his eyes quite a bit to just how conditional love can be towards some people, making him start to self-reflect on how he treats both others and you - He remains hopeful however, that perhaps one day your cynicism will ease, and you can thrive At first, he kept a bit of distance between you two, not because he was ashamed or uncomfortable, but because he didn’t want to make the wrong move. What you went through, and how you survived it all on your own made him admire you; your strength through it all was something to strive for he felt. When it came to actually trying to get closer, he was the smoothest of the bunch, bringing his charm to the table in the best ways he could. He’ll bring you with him on walks to help clear your mind where he’ll drop little comments about how strong you are, and how it shows your truest beauty. To him your strength and will to survive made you shine brighter than the stars at night and made you warmer than any fire. Once a lover he lets his softest side show, watching you rest on your tired days, or helping you get ready for the day. He’d be the only one to try easing you away from the cynical feelings, though he’d stop if you got upset with these attempts.
Tumblr media
Kung Lao - The things done to you made him hurt inside, though he keeps it to himself; but it made him pay closer attention to the things you’d say and do - Your strength made him adore you, even if it was from a distance for some time; he swore to himself he’d be there for you - He spends a fair amount of time just learning the way you think, wanting to be sure he could bring you the things you enjoy He yearned only to prove he wouldn’t abandon you like those before him, being careful to not overstep your boundaries in the process, however. He knew you must have still been hurting to some degree, often trying to distract you from it with his more outgoing nature. Oftentimes he’d sneak away from at least one of his duties to come see you, not really only as proof you matter more, but because he wants to make sure you’re feeling okay. Sometimes he’ll even bring a little something with him when he comes to visit you; whether it be a flower that reminded him of you, or a food he’d made himself. As a lover he’d always make you little meals here and there when he could or bring you meals when you’d be resting. He’d always take the chance to remind you that your strength is something he adores about you and strives to be as strong as you.

S6e7 thoughts (finally):
Love the subtle Charah worry for each other in the poison scenes.
Charlie: You didn’t come in contact?
Sarah: No, I’m gloved.
Me: Which literally never stops you from constantly touching your face/hair, but okay.
(Side note: How does Sarah look good in a freaking hazmat suit?)
Jesse. Sense of humour on point.
This joking and respectful s6 Jesse and Joe dynamic is my new favourite thing.
Asshole husband could have been treated to a Rex takedown in my ideal world, but given how complex a story the A plot was, I’ll let it slide.
I love the team closing ranks to investigate this one on their own. More team episodes, please.
Adding the CSIS element was fun. Special Agent Liu would make a great recurring character.
It is here where I go on a tangent about how this show could use a shadowy figure/a big bad/some ongoing story arcs, because if they’re planning a longer run, they can’t sustain just standalone episodes. Or maybe they can, what do I know?
There’s another subtle moment where Sarah takes a beat after she hands Charlie the magically procured antidote. (Also I’m gonna go ahead and assume one of those doses is measured for Rex.)
Wardrobe. We need to talk about Charlie in these denim tuxedos.
Love Sarah casually shining a light into Charlie’s eyes as if she’s actually checking him for injury rather than using it as an excuse to seek that reassurance that her boyfriend is okay after once again nearly dying.
Charlie on the phone with Trina…is that…do I detect a hint of actual continuity? From this show? Dare I hope?
And at this point I go a little off the rails as I get really distracted by 1) the reappearance of The House and 2) the unexpected Charah moment.
The Truong family: I’d wondered if her parents or perhaps grandparents were refugees/immigrants given they’d likely be about the right age for either (look up Vietnamese history in Canada for what I’m talking about.) Sounds like Mr. Truong was for sure. Also they can’t keep mentioning him if they’re not going to show him at some point, can they? Give me Truong family, please.
But anyway now Charah are kissing and they’re totally off to have some hot, passionate “thankful you’re alive” sex.
I love how Rex has become forever protective of Sarah BTW. It’s just a given that he lies on her lap for pats now.
I live for Jesse and Sarah banter.
LOL I missed the “CSIS Safe House” on the screen the first time around. Awkward.
Well I guess we aren’t getting Agent Liu as a recurring character…RIP
I wanted more whump from this last action scene.
(I can’t be the only one who half expected Rex to inject Charlie with the antidote can I?)
Charlie stabbing himself right in the chest with the needle, I just…I’m gonna need a minute.
(Also that little hint of chest hair with a few more buttons undone than usual…help.)
Wardrobe pulls off a win at the ballet studio with Sarah’s outfit and Charlie’s casual top.
I want to see Sarah accompany Sadie to New York…okay maybe I just want to see her punch Ryan in his stupid jerk face.
Rex is a ballet fan.
Interesting. Different. Unique. Way to perfectly round out a team episode, writers. Well done.
Sarah is a Bond fan: might have to work that into a fic.
And they settle on watching Black Swan. LOL I knew Rex was going to dance eventually.

Hi ☀️
Do you have any suggestions/tips and tricks for small artists? like how and where to include links, how often to post etc. most of my art just goes under the radar :/ especially when it has links attached. Thank you and have a wonderful week 🍄
Hi! I'm still not a very big artist myself, and I'm probably not the best person to ask for things like these as I'm still learning, to be entirely honest. But if I can help a little, I'm happy to! It's hard to give you any truly helpful advice without knowing your actual situation, but there are some general things you can do. (Long post ahead! It probably even contains some things you didn't ask for, but that I think are important because social media can be such a mental health hazard, and because I have no chill when it comes to things like this.)
In terms of technicalities with posting:
Try to post at the time people are most likely to see it. If you need some help with that, you can usually search online for information.
How often you should post depends on you as a person and what you want to do. I know a lot of people say to post daily, but as an artist that usually becomes unsustainable quickly. So I would say post on a schedule that works for you, not on the supposed "ideal" schedule. Good art usually takes time and energy to make, so don't stress too much about how often you should post. Posting on a regular schedule can help, especially in the beginning, because that means people will know when you post new work and may even have an incentive to seek it out once your post time rolls around. But make sure it's one that works for you and gives you the time to make your best work! Remember that having quality posts is better than having a large quantity of posts.
Related to the point above: Don't just constantly try to make new things to feed the algorithm, although making new work is also important. Bump your posts so that they're seen more, especially if it's something your proud of. The way to do this vary from platform to platform, but for Tumblr the reblog button is your friend. On Twitter you can retweet, but it's usually better to add a comment in a thread or quote retweeting. Sometimes even reposting. On Insta…. Insta is a pain, ngl. You can post and then share the post to your story later or something. For how often to bump, I guess I'd say a morning bump and evening bump are good for Twitter at least, and similar for Tumblr. And then bump every now and then whether it's a few weeks or a few months later. Insta is a bit different though. At any rate, you know the saying "work smarter, not harder"? This is that. Make use of your full body of work, at least all the pieces you still enjoy.
Try to get people to engage with your post: Ask questions that would be fun answering, ask for feedback, meme, etc.
Think about what people like when you make your art. This one is a bit tricky though, because you want to be seen for what you personally do and like, right? But sometimes it can be helpful to think about what "sells". For an instance, a lot of people got their start doing fanart. In my case I only started getting more attention once I started drawing animals. People also like things they can personally relate to. Here's the thing though: Make sure it's something you also like! And try not to get trapped in it for the sake of your social media presence, because it might be a slippery slope to finding yourself unhappy later on if you feel trapped drawing one thing only.
On a similar note, it helps to participate in trending hashtags if you want to get more eyes on your work. (I've mostly done this on Twitter, so I don't know if that would work for Tumblr and Insta though.) For an instance, if you know that Portfolio Day is coming up and you're seeking work, that's a great one to start with! Some people have started making calendars for planned hashtags, so that's a good thing to look up.
For how to attach links: Again, this varies depending on the platform. For an instance, the Twitter algorithm HATES links, and people are more reluctant to retweet them unless they like and want to support the artist first. It's usually more helpful to make an engaging post and then put the link in a reply threaded with the original post. On Tumblr, I just try to make links visible but non-intrusive. But to be honest, I'm still re-learning the ropes here, especially as an artist with a business. On Insta, well… You can probably tell I don't like this platform huh :') But yeah, it's helpful to have a linktree or website to gather your links in one place that you can link to in your bio, and as far as I know you'll have to put your links in your stories because URLs in regular posts are for paid posts only. :')
While we're on the topic of links: Try to make sure you have pinned posts for your social medias so that all your links are easily accessible if people want them. (This is something I need to get better at myself lmao)
Still on the topic of links: You can always attach a link to your art posts if you have prints, stickers, commissions, a Patreon, etc , but don't expect too much from links on posts that are meant to be focused on art, especially when you're still a small artist. They're more there in case anyone's interested, but I think it's also pretty important to have them there if you have anything to promote. Bigger self promo posts probably will not gain as much traction unless you have something to promote that people REALLY want, but those are also usually where my sales come from personally. Also keep in mind that what's important is that your actual following that cares about what you do see those self promo focused posts - not necessarily the the word being spread, although that is great too. I'm still personally looking for a good balance between these types of posts, but I think it's something you eventually figure out as you go.
But with all of thos said, here are some even more important things:
Make friends. And I don't mean network for clout. I mean network with people because you want to know them, like their work and because you find them fun and respect them. Make genuine friends and meet people who you are happy to support and who will support you in return. We're all much, much stronger together!
Don't stress too much about social media. I know it's easier said than done, but as someone (I can't remember who) once said: The only way to win the social media game is to not play it. If you put too much of your sense of self worth or expectations into it, you're going to have a BAD time. So step away when you need it, and celebrate all your wins no matter how small. (And on that note, take people's advice with a grain of salt. For an instance if you hear anyone say you should consistently meet a certain target with your engagements to be considered successful, run. Do not listen. Trying to keep up with those is only going to get more and more unmanageable as you grow, so it's like setting yourself up for a constant sense of failure.) Also know that social media is not the end all be all for your work. There are other ways to make yourself known too, if that's what your goal is. There are tons of successful artists who don't have a huge social media presence!
Let things take time and manage your expectations. Of course it hurts when your art isn't seen, or when a piece you put your whole heart into doesn't do well, and that's valid. But don't let that hurt consume you. Keep at it and focus on making the best work you possibly can, in the most joyful way you can. Cultivate your passion for your art by making it as enjoyable as possible, even during those days when it just isn't. After all, you're making art for you, right? Make art for yourself first, and your audience second. That way it's much easier to manage your emotions surrounding it all, if you know at heart that you like what you make, or that you're at least getting there.
So, that was a lot, but the final thing that's super important in this is to have some distance to what you do. Trying to keep up with all these things at the same time can and will exhaust you if you don't take care of yourself. So please start with the steps you feel you can personally take and don't worry about the rest until you feel like you can incorporate more into your routine. I hope this is helpful. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead too, Anon! 😊

mai.....ignore if its too much. but ideal jedi silhouette?
time for me to give a breakdown of what I think the jedi silhouette is for the SW eras... DISCLAIMER: this is not how fashion fully works. most fashion periods last ten years to 20 years, usually (the shortening or lengthening of fashion trends as time goes on is a thing) so for the sake of cohesion I'd move the old republic era a couple 3000 years forward (roughly 1500 bby)
from the latest to the earliest:
POST REBELLION ERA/NEW REPUBLIC JEDI
- rebel fashion mixed intrinsically with Jedi fashion, to the point of it being the base style, and not the other way around. focus on the practical and reusable
- we're talking jackets and cargo pants, heavy boots, differently colored fabrics
- more pockets and belt space
- since it ts mostly casual wear, the silhouette is very round and small, bulked in the knees area.
- small shoulders, tight fitting shirts. BUTTONS!
- more accessories than the olden Jedi. gloves, scarves, patches, pockets!
- rebellion symbols everywhere
Tumblr media
CLONE WARS ERA JEDI
- mandalorianification of Jedi (or technically, cloneification, but we know where they get it from). armor overtakes previous Jedi style, making them more dynamic. less attention is put on natural fabrics and colors
- armor becomes centerpiece. it does slim the silhouette, while still keeping the bulkiness
- boots are higher, usually accompanied with knee guards
- thicker boots for field work
- more belt space!
- less robe overpour. tight silhouette
Tumblr media
PRE CLONE WARS JEDI
- classicisme approach (think regency era greek silhouettes and aesthetics. a return to the original and simplistic)
- lighter fabrics, both in color and density
- naturally dyed fabrics
- very much judogi inspired. except for the belt
- square shapes, but nothing too pronounced. modesty moment
- less layering, maybe propagation of tight underclothes?
Tumblr media
HIGH REPUBLIC JEDI
- BULKY. layering is at its peak. you can see underclothes peeking under robes. since it's an era of stability, there is no fabric shortage. light and natural colors are still preferred
- puffier and open sleeves
- Big capes and cowls
- long tunic at the front and sides of the hips, giving it a slight hourglass figure
- gold details everywhere
- brown leather, less worn
- sashes and a touch of colorful fabric
Tumblr media
OLD REPUBLIC JEDI (post mandalorian wars)
- incorporation of mandalorian shapes on the armor (the first mandofication of Jedi). usually savaged pièces of beskar from mandalorian enemies
- tighter shape in the upper arms and legs
- pleated armor around the hip
- somehow not much armor (at least for clone wars standards) but for a few bulky pieces (neck and shoulder guard, vambraces)
- the silhouette becomes wider and lowered
- leather and darker, synthetic fabrics
Tumblr media
OLD REPUBLIC JEDI (pre mandalorian wars)
- peaceful times. era of galaxy exploration. early 2000s color pallette. silver and neon and brown leather. more fifth element actually
- VESTS! JACKETS! general separation of the arms and chest area
- tight leather tunics with brighter colors contrasting darker leather
- puffed shoulders
- smaller belts
- geometrical tunics! closed at different angles
- slim forearms (probably with leather guards?)
- tight pants and thigh high boots.
- color variation!
Tumblr media
now IF i had to device some sort of Jedi silhouette, I'm thinking of two approaches:
POST KOTOR 2 REFORMATION
- since the disciple is a Jedi historian, get attempts to return to some of their roots, with an added extra flair (to bring the jedi back stronger)
- imposing silhouette, wide and high shoulders.
- revan like sash at the front
- wide flowy sleeves (for the elegance)
- pants and boots still in the tight fitting era
- gold and turquoise and jewel tones.
Tumblr media
BEGINNING OF THE SWTOR ERA (?
- WIDE.
- longer robes with more layering, an attempt to replicate high fashion senators. this is the era where the jedi order becomes more involved with the republic and attempts to copy their style
- the belt is smaller, no need to carry weapons
- more patterns and gilded details
Tumblr media
so uuuuuh, yeah this is basically it. of course i didn't account for personal style/cultural influences because it's kinda impossible and they're not even able to be classified in "working class" or "royalty" divisions, so it's harder

Teen Eric headcanons
(Originally I wanted to write an one-shot for Eric’s birthday, but I ended up focusing on a multi-chaptered fic of mine, so I wouldn’t make it on time for the 1st of July. I wrote this instead, because I also had no ideas to draw, and I figured headcanons would be better than nothing.)
Eric never quits his habit of overeating, but grows rather tall regardless, due to the genes from his father’s side of the family. His full height is about 6 feet 1, and he ends up being the tallest out of the main four (and Butters) in high-school and later on in adulthood.
Actually has naturally really nice skin, with no acne or zits and very smooth. Though he does help a bit by putting on some skincare products that he’d never let anyone besides Liane find out that he uses. (Because that’d be “gay”.)
Stops wearing a hat for the most part because it keeps messing up his hair. And he spends quite a bit of time combing it and taking care of it. (Not that he’d tell anyone.)
Has a cute, small, round nose and thin, nicely-shaped eyebrows.
Of course he’s still heavy (over 105kg or 231 pounds), but as he was growing taller the weight has been distributed to his body more gracefully, so he is more bulky than he is “fat”, though his belly is still quite visible and his cheeks are round.
Dresses semi-formally even on regular days at school. Button-up shirts, corduroy pants, suede shoes, trench coats occasionally, things like that. Likes to brag about how expensive the brands are all the time.
His overall situation has not been getting any better with time. On the contrary, the more that time passes, the worse he gets mentally. He lashes out and is rude at innocent people far more easily, gets more irritable and is more prone to anger bursts.
Eric is unbearable to be around to the point their group almost splits up. It becomes a vicious cycle and the less Kyle, Stan and Kenny want to hang out with him, the more he clings to his racist ideals.
The only friend who mostly remains by his side is Butters, whom he often involves in schemes in order to make money.
Like it happened with his therapist’s wife, he has caused more people who irritated him once or twice to commit suicide, as, after that and the incident with Scott, he steadily only becomes bolder with what he can get away with.
His relationship with Liane also worsens over time. After several failed attempts to try and control him, Liane eventually regresses back to her usual ways and tries to give him anything he wants, because of how detrimental and exhausting arguing with him all the time is.
He still experiences hallucinations every now and then. He stopped seeing his stuffed animals around when he was about 15, but Cupid Me persisted.
Liane has tried to take him to therapists (for…everything) but Eric does not believe he needs help, thinks him going there is a violation of his rights and is always hostile to the doctors, therefore, they have to cut ties after less than two months.
He is nearly always unable to sit through an entire period without causing some kind of disturbance in the classroom. Be it bothering his classmates (Kyle especially) or casually pulling his phone out, and expects no repercussions about anything. Hence, he’s always exasperated and irritated when a teacher reprimands him.
It isn’t often that teachers reprimand him, however, because he almost always shouts at them even at a simple “be quiet, Eric”, and given that his worsening mental condition is obvious, they are unsure and/or afraid of what he might do, as he can be unpredictable. So they prefer to return home with a headache, rather than try to get Eric to behave.
He has gotten into trouble with the principal for being caught owning nazi paraphernalia, and Liane was also informed, but Eric never bothered to reconsider about stopping to buy such items.
For a couple of weeks, he attended the meetings of a far-right organization, but eventually quitted because “they were sitting on their asses all day long”.
Wanted to get a swastika tattoo on his arm, but he chickened out at the last minute because he was scared of the pain.
He ran for president of the student council in 12th grade, but he was elected vice-president, and his pride could not afford Wendy being elected president, so he quitted on his own.
Has managed to teach himself nearly fluent German, semi-fluent Spanish and a bit of French.
Unsurprisingly, he does not do well in school except for German class. His grades in the other subjects are just… tragic. But he doesn’t care because he thinks that studying and getting into college is “overrated anyway”.
Eventually grows out of crossdressing, but still goes through a crisis about his sexuality. Luckily for him, his primary attraction is females, which makes it easier for him to repress the part of his brain that is attracted to males.
They have an on-and-off kind of relationship with Heidi ever since 10th grade. Heidi was understandably reluctant to date him after what she had gone through in 4th grade, but Eric managed to convince her that he has changed, and that he’s a different, better person.
He loves bragging about having a girlfriend, and tells lots of stories about how their relationship progresses (though some are fake, or have a bit of an extra spice to them).
Not all girls find him as intolerable to look at anymore. Though, of course, they still can’t stand his personality, which is why, since Eric really wanted a girlfriend, he chose to go to Heidi, whom he knew he could convince of his change.
He has a small crush on Wendy, but he’d rather give all his progress in a video game up than ever admit it to anyone – even to himself.
He often sleeps over at Heidi’s place without letting Liane know beforehand, and when he returns the next morning, she doesn’t bat an eye. (Heidi’s parents are a different story, however.)
A few months before the end of 12th grade he takes up smoking. At first he just thinks that it looks “kinda cool” but eventually he ends up actually liking it.
He gets warnings about how his habits are going to affect his health badly in the long term, but he always ignores people. Eric always thinks he knows better than anybody else around him.
Alright, so, that about does it for the headcanons. I’d also like to share a few songs that I personally strongly associate with Eric (even if not all the lyrics fit him perfectly):

For the people not understanding the idea that the Rebel Captain we meet in RO is SO different from who we met in episode 1 of Andor, isn't that kind of the point???!!
The Eye heist is a key experience for Cassian. For him to lose the idealist Nemik, who you've rightly guessed as someone who didn't really need to bother himself with ideas of Rebellion on such a large scale, and to INHERIT his idealism with the manifesto
And him so coldly and ruthlessly killing Skeen - the mercenary who thought the only way to lift yourself up is by standing on the heads of others. Cassian essentially killed that part of himself. The final crumb of calculated survivalism that he was holding on to. Because, like Luthen said in 1x4, he knew that if he loses that last bit of self preservation, he is gone. He will die fighting the Empire.
But, inheriting Nemik's manifesto, and thus inheriting Nemik's idealism, Cassian is now on the road to not die fighting the Enemy, but fighting for the Rebellion. For hope.
It's that difference that's the key. It's an internal process, not an external one.
When I say this series has been occupying all of my mental capacity!!!!
So I think this may be a situation where it's a should versus is thing. I think people understand that Cassian in the beginning of Andor isn't the Cassian in Rogue One, but some people don't believe that he should be the Cassian as he is written in the beginning of Andor. Because of one line: "I've been in this fight since I was six years old."
I don't think anyone assumed Cassian wouldn't be darker or more ruthless in Andor than in Rogue One - he should be, because he needs to get to the point where he cannot take the thought of giving up on the Death Star plans after doing so much shit that - morally grey or not - hurt him.
Let me be clear in saying that I love the show so far. And I think there is enough subtext so far to give me the vibe that we don't know exactly what Cassian has done in terms of being a rebel in his own way - imo I would not be surprised if they reveal that Cassian did actually fight on Mimban, or that Clem was a partisan of some kind, or that Cassian's been doing a fair bit of insurrection (I mean it's on his record). The issue I have with the show pushing him as someone who is focused on self-preservation is that is Jyn's arc.
Jyn is one of Saw's greatest soldiers until he abandons her at 16. She becomes disillusioned with rebellion as a self-preservation tactic, a way to protect herself from her trauma, but she does do some rebel stuff here and there in her own way. It's why she is in Wobani. A lot of viewers interpret Jyn in the film as actually indifferent when she's actually just A) pushing people's buttons (especially Saw's) and B) trying to protect herself from a cause that has always caused her emotional strife. The novel does a lot of heavy lifting on this (Cassian immediately picks up on her need, her fire - and even wonders how no one else on the council seemed to get it) but it's there in the film, too. Some jackass forces her to go on a mission for the rebellion and eventually an idealistic brother-like guy with a message inspires her to be more.
I am all for Cassian and Jyn mirroring each other because I think they were always intended to mirror each other. I don't even hate Cassian not being a child soldier and just growing into the Rebellion forever. But Cassian calling out Jyn on Eadu doesn't sit right with me if he really wasn't a rebel at some point early on. Yes, Jyn had the privilege of not getting involved in an organized rebellion from 17-21 but she was basically homeless that whole time (after the Pontas' deaths in Rebel Rising), it doesn't feel good for him to say that when he also didn't join up until 21.
I know the point may be that Cassian would have always had politics thrust onto him because of his indigeneity whereas if Jyn's parents hadn't rebelled against the Empire, she would not have had to make that choice and would have been able to live quite comfortably. Okay. But she was a child soldier regardless.
So I think the criticism some people have is that they would have preferred the show approach Cassian as someone who was in a resistance of some kind early on.
The saving grace would be Cassian knowing what he is against like he tells Skeen and Nemik. Him having an ideology of a sort already. But the show needs to tread carefully when it comes to characters who are coded as being from the Core or the galactic version of the Global North "teaching" Cassian about rebellion and anti-Imperialism. Cassian, whose whole life has been defined by it because of where he was born. He doesn't need some Coruscanti spy to tell him that he'll die fighting the Empire because Cassian surely already knows that the Empire will kill him in one way or another. When you say that he is now on the road to die for the Rebellion instead of against the Empire, 100%.
I don't think Cassian necessarily inherits Nemik's idealism, Cassian already has some idealistic tendencies - searching for a sister who is likely already gone for example - but I do think he is more of a realist and will be inspired by Nemik's manifesto. I hope that in fact Cassian makes it better. Refines Nemik's extremely thoughtful but naive idealistic ideology with his lived experience. What I don't want is Nemik "teaching" him that rebellions are built on hope. I want that to come from Cassian.
(I hate when prequels add some other character's context to things from the original that stand so nicely on their own. I don't need someone else talking about how rebellions are built on hope because I think Cassian should be the one to realize that himself. If that is his driving belief, the force behind all the things he does that he hates, it needs to be from that internal process you mention).
And absolutely: Cassian killing Skeen is Cassian killing that last bit of self-preservation in him, but it is also killing for the Rebellion. In a way that was more than killing for his own sake (him killing the mall cops was based lol acab but also purely something he had to do to stay alive). Skeen might have killed him if Cassian had taken him up on his offer but it's uncertain - I actually think there's room to interpret Skeen in a lot of different ways and not just as a self-interested double crosser the whole time.
That uncertain about Skeen is the point: it never crossed Cassian's mind to steal the credits for himself. He was helping the rebellion, he was being in the rebellion the way he likely always wanted to be, but he also was taking care of his basic needs. There was no uncertainty in Cassian. He hates the Empire, and he likes these rebels. And wants them to succeed. Skeen either just hated the Empire but didn't care about what happen
Nemik trying to justify mercs to himself is interesting because he probably didn't ever consider that someone might actually want to fight but couldn't make it work without it being paid work. Not everyone is ready or able to run off and go be a revolutionary (some people have families that they are responsible for, etc). Cassian is honorable and decent, and obviously intends to pay his friends and Maarva back for the credits he's borrowed.
but i know you’re right lol this show is TAKING UP MY THOUGHTS

just finished debris n now I'm curious what your thoughts on lefia and/or the true end are
NICE! Hope ya enjoyed it!
As for thoughts HOOOOH BOY
Tumblr media
Have way too many of them that are all over the place. Gonna warn you this is a really scattered wall of text heh
First of all Lefia and her relationship to Tatsuki
Personally don't think Lefia's a real person [have seen some theories that she's Tatsuki's sister] and is more of an imaginary friend of sorts. The image shown when you find her in the apartments looks more sketch like the other drawings as opposed to an actual photo. Think Tatsuki might have been the one to draw it. As the contents are never actually shown thinks possible to have been either a more picture heavy child's book or journal.
Lefia could have been a character from or based on said book that they really liked/would've wanted to be friends with if she was real so they imagined they were friends. As Tats seems to feel lonely and unable to connect to people they sought comfort from Lefia constantly.
Another possibility is she's a sort of idealized alter-ego they made as a form of escapism. They have serious self-hatred problems and wish they were someone else so they pretend to be Lefia in their head to get away from themself. In this case the red book could've been a journal Tats made to document their stories as Lefia, and maybe helping them further distance self.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bit of a note on that; in the underground looking are this npc sitting next to door gives you a look when enter. The figure inside the room looks like they're sitting in a way reminiscent to someone in an interview or discipline lecture. Pressing the button plays a series of weird drawing, and personally think they give off the same sort of feelings as those drawings
Given that you have to use the stop effect and door becomes translucent Tatsuki might have kept her a secret from others, sometimes even going off and hiding to spend time with/as her.
The True Ending
God thoughts on this are all over the place and honestly still not sure what to make of Tat's mouth getting messed up before going off. Best idea is its showing how they snapped and turned into a monster, but even that doesn't seem to click right.
During her part, Lefia puts away several childs toy then enters a glitched/messed up version of Tatsuki's room with Tats asleep in their bed. She walks slower and gets a shadow over her face. After this there's the path scene where Lefia blocks Tats. Am convinced this is a metaphor for Tatsuki giving up their innocence [putting away childs toys and 'killing' their imaginary friend]. Lefia block path to area with the two corpses could be that part deep down trying to save them. Walking away means they chose not to give in, but the scenes with them looking at the book on the ground then sitting on bed looking down imply they lost the comfort it provided and ultimately just gave up and became an empty shell [they're trapped somewhere they're miserable, entirely alone, and failed to escape so what's the point of trying anymore? whatever hope they had the future could be better is gone.]
Choosing to stab Lefia of course means they 'threw away their innocence' or stopped trying to stay a good person. [theorize they had trouble controlling emotions, especially anger, and either got berated/punished and called a monster when they lost control or viewed themselves as such and was scared that's who they could become.] After this am not really sure what to make of everything, tho think Tat's corpse being in the field heavily implies they died.
As Tats and the chaser meet up at the park think its safe to say the two had some sort of relationship, either as genuine friends or a 'friend' that bullied Tats. Personally lean more towards genuine friends. Feel like the area underwater with the chaser looking down and sitting in an isolated n closed off could show that Tatsuki saw her as someone that was also lonely and the two became close friends due to being able to relate to one another so well. In this case you can play with possibility the red book was either a gift or something the two enjoyed together which is why they have it with them when meeting. yknow, if you want the ending to sting more heh
Tumblr media
An interesting detail is the area the ending happens in seems to resemble this area. Not sure if the npc that turns into a child when using upside-down effect [which can be taken as either 'seeing things as they are' or Tatsuki's distorted view, which can really shape view of the chaser as she's usually tame and using effect shows her in chaser form.] or house with two active and fast chasers really means anything but think its something worth noting.
Sooo yeah, there's thoughts. Hope it was a fun and/or interesting [and intelligible] read!
COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT BUT WANNA SHARE THIS ADORABLE HARINEZUMI MADE OF SOU READING BOOK WITH LIL LEFIA IN CORNER TO TATS. THE WAY THEIR HAIR RADIATES POMERANIAN ENERGY N THEY LOOK SO SOFT/COMFY JUST.
Tumblr media
also there’s a doll that resembles lefia in Mikan Muzou

Hmmm found family pirates ideas floatin around among the fluff between my ears
Love the idea of basically my two dads whenever they make port. Stede reminding them he gave them extra spending money, so have fun and be safe! And Ed is the one that's like hey maybe don't announce that we all have a bunch of valuables and money on us and hey crew pls do be careful and do you remember what to do if u need us and can't find us, let's go over it quickly (because like. Ed falls so easily into party mode when he's aware he can let loose (or fkn Calico Jack comes around) with minimal damage even if 'minimal' is maybe not that minimal at all sometimes so I think once he's actually at the point again of feeling like he can just Be Ed around the crew he becomes the Mom Friend of the group lmaooo.)
And there's almost always shenanigans. Like this would also be ideal time for date night for them but u know there's gonna be interruptions (to them and also probably to any other crew members that are together trying to use that time as date night. No one gets any peace 😅)
There's so much u could stuff into any episode ideas for this too. Like, just one: Mr. Buttons has gone around this port amassing a massive flock of seagulls that are obedient to his homemade leashes that are long enough the birds could damn near fly a half mile away and still be attached to him technically. He is refusing to believe the rest of the crew when they say Stede and Ed won't let him keep them all. Stede and Ed are pulled from a lovely little dinner in a disgusting tavern that a man was just stabbed in (but neither of them did the stabbing, so not their problem lol) and dragged by probably Oluwande and Jim (who were also on a nice picnic date in a clearing until they heard shouting and saw a flock of seagulls and just. Sigh deep in their souls because Some Shit is afoot.)
Also very important tho silly: a flock of seagulls song must be used in this ep.
Anyway, this leads to Stede mumbling thru a refusal to take on an entire flock (but he isn't strong enough to say no completely, so Mr. Buttons does keep abt five of them as new friends) which leads to hey wait a goddamn minute why does Mr. Buttons get a pet and we all don't?! Which is valid so Stede can't be upset with them but he also I think realizes how far he put his foot in his mouth with this situation now and has to deal with it but would really rather the whole thing just go away lmao
Especially as Ed is zero help. Teasing that he basically did make it sound like they could all have a little buddy. Maybe not a seagull but some other sea bird, who knows. Maybe a pelican.
This leads to other suggestions and discussion that they finally decide Mr. Buttons can have his birds, but the rest will choose one crew pet to all look after. The initial suggestions:
-a whale, and we could teach it to scout ahead and tell us where valuable ships are! This is shot down by Stede who reminds them that whales are used to ppl in ships harpooning them, so they probably wouldn't be keen on humans on a ship. Also, whales don't speak English nor do they as a crew speak Whale
-a dog. Stede likes this one, as does Ed, however the key issue is no one has seen a dog at any port in awhile that didn't already have an owner so...fuck.
-A giant squid. Shot down by Ed, who made the valid points that much like whales, squids don't have much reason to like humans, and also how would they 'keep' a squid? Like physically or emotionally? Doesn't feel possible to Ed.
And so on and so forth until it's mostly playful bickering until
And this is the bit where it's key to remember the show is historically accurate when it wants to be and other times not akbdkfngn
Izzy rolls up holding a goldfish in a bowl. He won it, he explains, but he needs to get it in a much bigger home on the ship cuz that little bowl isn't nearly enough room.
There are so many questions, but only Stede and Ed are bold enough to ask any of them. Unfortunately, they are not the most important questions. Instead it's: what did you name him? And where are they giving away free fish and why?
Which is a long road to them eventually making a not historically accurate but who cares tank for the goldfish, and while he lives in Izzy's quarters they all end up helping to feed and visit the fish
But they're really in deep when they finish up the emergency fish pod device they cook up, in case they ever have to abandon ship in a hurry
After all, Izzy Jr is a crew member now! They aren't going to leave any person (or fish) behind!
The metrics of actually shooting this and making it work re: set design would be a nightmare I think but also. Izzy practicing getting Izzy Jr into the emergency bowl pod thing because he doesn't want to be caught off guard if the worst should happen 🥺

Idk I mean no disrespect and I’m coming to you with this civilly because I do like a lot of your opinions but this one is a little harder for me to see eye to eye with you— I think it’s possible to think things are heading in the wrong direction in some ways and not act like saying so is trying to push some anti-tech amish narrative. Like, I don’t think smart phones are great for a lot of peoples mental health and I think tweens shouldn’t have unfiltered access to most social media but I’m also not unrealistic and realize that parents are still going to buy their kids smart phones and have no semblance of parental control and how to talk to kids about these things, y’know? Not really an ai example and more to do with ipads and smart phones, but we’re going to have multiple elsagates and things of the like too and it’s always going to be more useful for people to complain about it than ignore it. And no one has to understand how youtube algorithms work to complain about youtube. Like, you cannot like ai technology for what it’s currently doing now and when someone says “they are against ai” I don’t really take that in bad faith and know what they mean. Because even if it’s never going away, there could always be reformations and solutions ideally to address peoples concerns. I think that’s an okay thing to want even if it never happens. Things like deepfakes I see as very adjacent to this. Back in the day people would make a big deal about photoshop and it still hasn’t changed that people can use technology to be disrespectful to others or even do more horrendous things. The way I see it, since it’s been such a hot button topic lately, I think it’s good for people to voice their concerns and have some pushback towards what things we don’t want from this technology. I don’t think people are naive for that and I also don’t think one has to fully understand ai to have these concerns. Idk personally, I just see it as a pretty useless thing to argue about. Because at this rate, there is no “team pro-ai” — because as you said, the genie is already out of the bottle. But at the same time when people say they’re anti-ai, I know what they mean, even if people want to treat them as naive for not fully comprehending how the technology works. Like I understand WHAT they are worried about and I do still of course hope for the best in regard to its utilization and more and more people learning about it. I think a lot of people are disappointed too in how it’s become a feature on nearly everything and I can’t blame them. I find it personally just more annoying than anything. I’m an artist but not a good enough one to worry about people stealing my art so I can understand trying to tell people there’s no going back from this existing, I just think it’s also fair to let those people voice their concerns in the first place, whether they fully understand ai or not, and not make them feel like their opinion is useless because of how far the technology has come. Technology development will always be unwavering but it’s not out of left field to say that you want technology to be used for good instead of bad and I think that’s a basic concept anyone can get behind no matter how much they still have to learn.
well of course i believe that people are allowed to voice their concerns and criticism about ai, and i don’t defacto defend all uses of ai. my concern isn’t about people wanting precautions or talking about potential dangers, my concern is people flattening all nuance out of these conversations to the point that “anti-ai” becomes a stance. you bring up photoshop here which i like because photoshop is ai. social media algorithms use ai. medical diagnostic tools use ai. a calculator is ai. “artificial intelligence” is a buzzword more than an actual Thing. ai is not a sentient being, “it” isn’t doing anything besides math. it is what people do with it that determines whether or not it’s a “good” or “bad” thing. it should go without saying that corporations using ai image generators instead of paying human artists Is Bad and i’m not happy that’s happening— but the “using ai image generators” isn’t the immoral or evil part. and that’s all i want to make clear!
like i said i’ve had a personal interest in this exact topic for most of my life so i don’t blame people for not agreeing with me because i can see how what i’m saying sounds cruel and judgmental, but i’m coming from a place with less fear and confusion. people are allowed to have opinions on things they don’t understand, but i just want them to at least take into consideration that they don’t understand how it works. like, remember when everyone who was afraid of vaccines didn’t want to get the covid vaccine? a lot of the reactionary fear responses there came from a lack of understanding of how vaccines function, which is medical knowledge not everyone has. i’m not calling those people stupid, their fear has justification, but it’s their lack of understanding that lead to the fear.
ultimately we agree that it’s useless to argue about

Holding Space For Each Other When You’re Both Hurting
Tumblr media
In a recent session, one of my patients said something that many of us, not just therapists, have heard many times:
“We love each other, but…”
It’s not hard to imagine the statements that follow the “but.” In my patient’s case they were:
We can’t help poking each other’s pain points…
It seems like a vicious cycle of pushing each other’s buttons…
The root of this comes from her story, in her own words:
My partner told me he lost a big client – which meant a big financial loss. I knew he felt distressed and that he needed me to be comforting and calm. But I felt just as distressed and anxious about our finances as he did at the moment. His worried tone didn’t help. It took everything I had to manage my own emotions so I could lean in and comfort him.
Situations like these make us feel less than capable to be a good partner. That’s because we tend to idealize our roles and how they look like in theoretical moments. But how we imagine we would act in the moment isn’t always going to be how we actually react when faced with it.
Our unique histories and personal experience give us equally unique emotional pressure points. We may be aware of some, but often, the task of everyday living doesn’t give us the opportunity to examine and resolve all of them, much less discuss them openly with our partner.
We realize this too late, when we’re in situations when our significant other invariably pushes on those pressure points. And just like what happened with my patient, one partner’s pain point might sometimes trigger the other.
It brings to mind another patient who spent a whole day working on her garden. She expected her husband to be overjoyed by her accomplishments, but was disappointed when he was, instead, oblivious. She had to muster up all her energy not to lash out and express her disappointment calmly instead. When thinking about the situation and her reaction, she recognized that it most likely came from her experience as a child, when her parents gave her lukewarm recognition for her achievements. Her husband’s lack of reaction for her hard work triggered these memories and pressure points.
So what can you do if this situation keeps happening in your relationship? A key step is to take time after these situations to recognize your triggers and pay attention to which actions, words, or other things seem to generate a strong emotional response in you.
You might want to list them down and then read through them, considering where and how they could have started. Ask yourself Why does this bring on an outsized reaction? It’s an empowering exercise and a helpful step in managing emotional reactions and keeping the relationship healthy.
When You’re Both Hurting
As a therapist, I’m trained to be a source of comfort and reassurance to my patients without bringing in my own emotional pressure points. More than that, I’m also uninvolved or separate from the situation. I’m not the source of pain, nor does their pain create a storm of emotions in me.
This isn’t the case with an intimate partnership. Both partners have emotions bubbling under the surface at any given time, and supporting your partner’s needs when you are feeling triggered may sometimes be overwhelming.
It’s always easier for us to see our partner’s role in relationship problems than it is to see what we contribute to the difficulties. One of the most helpful questions I bring up for my patients is: What do you know about yourself that might contribute to the conflicts that you and your partner have?
In a relationship, it’s important to remember that different situations may be call on us to fulfill different roles. When your partner is sharing, focus on your role as a listener. When they approach you with their hurt feelings, try to listen without being defensive. When your partner knows you care about them and their sensitivities, reciprocating this becomes more natural.
Tips for Giving More Space for Each Other’s Sensitivities:
Tip 1: It may not “make sense” to you, but accommodate their feelings, anyway.
Think about ways you may communicate so both of you can comfortably accommodate each other’s emotional pressure points. It’s important that this is reciprocated, so you both need to constantly calibrate your reactions and take the time to talk, even when it’s hard. Both of you have the responsibility to work on your own issues but being open and accepting of each other’s difficult emotions will be a big help.
Tip 2: Avoid Counting the Cost.
As much as possible, stick to the situation that happening in the present and resist “counting the cost,” which means counting the action or words that frustrated you as patterns or lists of offences. For example, if your partner is sensitive to feeling incompetent when expressing your frustration about their lack of initiative around the house, don’t give them a litany of all the times they didn’t help out. Instead, stick to the present, specific situation that made you feel that you’re not getting the help you need. Emphasize that you’re not interested in blame, but in expressing this clearly so that the relationship become a happier one. This is up to both of you, not just one or the other.
Tip 3: Acknowledge Your Own Sensitivities and Turn Criticisms into Requests.
Confrontation doesn’t need to turn into a highly charged conflict. A helpful first step would be to acknowledges your own sensitivities once you feel overwhelmed or frustrated. If you feel particularly insecure because you felt your partner ignored your need or request, you might say something like: “I know I sometimes need to feel loved and validated more than usual, and can easily feel abandoned. So just now I really felt frustrated that you weren’t paying enough attention to me.”
Healthy relationships involve mutual understanding, consideration, and respect for both your and your partner’s triggers. Trusting that our partner is willing to hear and acknowledge our feelings, our hurts become manageable. When couples practice sharing and listening, they grow closer over time, deepen trust and feel supported in their pain.
