Zutara's Song is Definetely The Great War by Taylor Swift

I've seen a lot of Zutara songs and playlists out there and I wanted to share my opinion on my personal favorite

I want to start out by saying that this analysis is going to completely ignore Taylor Swift's intentions when she wrote the song and any analysis of the song in concurrence with her life. I'm also going off my personal feelings that the first verse and chorus are Zuko talking to Katara, the second verse, chorus, and bridge are Katara talking to Zuko, and the remaining parts of the song are them reflecting after the war.

My knuckles were bruised like violets,

Sucker punching walls, cursed you as I sleep talked,

For me, this was pretty typical season 1 Zuko. Angry at the world, fighting everything in sight, ect, ect. It's only after the first two lines that the song gets a little bit more specific.

Spineless in my tomb of silence,

Tore your banners down, took the battle underground,

That third line is really reminiscent of Ba Sing Se. He took himself out of the story, until, of course, he had to make a choice in "Crossroads of Destiny"

And we know what he chooses

It's almost phrased in the form of an apology, which connects it even further to their story. "Tore your banners down" could also mean the fall of Ba Sing Se in general. Aang is Katara's banner, the avatar who she put so much hope in, but the Earth Kingdom banner is also who she was fighting behind. Azula killed Aang, so I would personally say it's the latter, but I saw two meanings behind it so it's totally up for interpretation.

And maybe it was egos swinging,

The "egos swinging" bit resonated with me a lot, because at this point in the story Zuko isn't done with his character arc. He still seeks his father's validation over his own moral code, and although it seems to me like he's gotten over a lot of his entitlement, I think he still feels entitled to his throne. That's one of my favorite things about his arc, actually, that he comes from a place of privilege but eventually, unlike Azula, realizes that the right to rule isn't given by birth but by true care for the people you represent. (some politicians should take notes)

Maybe it was her,

To me, the "her" in this case is Azula, convincing Zuko their father will be proud of him if he returns to the Fire Nation, although it could also mean Mai. Again, open for interpretation.

Flashes of the battle come back to me in a blur,

This could mean a lot for different people. I've seen a theory about Zuko possibly disassociating (not unlike similar theories about Darth Vader), which I think is interesting. It could also maybe represent the guilt he still feels, which is my personal opinion.

Moving on, the chorus is fairly generic once again,

All that bloodshed, crimson clover,

Uh-uh, sweet dream was over,

My hand was the one you reached for,

All throughout the great war,

The hand part stuck out to me because of the part in the final agni Kai when they reach for each other:

Then it goes back to the any enemies-to-lovers generic dynamic again...

Always remember, uh-uh,

Tears on the letter,

I vowed not to cry anymore,

If we survived the Great War.

And then we switch to Katara's POV:

You drew up some good faith treaties,

I drew curtains closed, drank my poison all alone,

You could argue that this is several moments throughout the series, maybe at the end of the war when she gets together with Aang, but I connected it most with her time spent on the ship after book 2. While Zuko was trying to fix his relationship with the Fire Nation and return to his family, Katara was isolating herself, worried about the war, about the avatar, avoiding her father and Sokka out of shame and feelings of abandonment. It was an extremely dark time for her, and although Zuko was trying to feel hopeful about his return, he doesn't even smile when he reunites with Mai. He knows he made the wrong decision.

You said I have to trust more freely,

This is after Zuko's redemption arc, during "The Southern Raiders" (which is probably my favorite ATLA episode, btw). Zuko encourages Katara to trust him, feeling that he is changed and is now deserving of it.

But she refuses to forgive or trust him

I would argue this is for good reason. She is clearly angry at more than just him, the entire Fire Nation, in fact, for murdering her mother and starting the war, but it is also very personal. When he betrayed her in Ba Sing Se after she revealed such a devastating detail of her life and they shared a connection, her abandonment issues probably came into play. It's similar to the trauma she had with her father after he left to join the war. She is scared that the people she cares about will leave her, just like her parents did, whether they had a choice or not, and just like Aang did when Azula shot him with lightning, again, without meaning to. Zuko left her intentionally to join the Fire Nation, even after she offered to heal his scar, a very important moment in their arcs. She is forgiving, optimistic, helpful, and kind to someone who hunted her and her friends for nearly a year, and he throws the offer of her most valuable asset back in her face and is instrumental in Aang's near death experience.

But diesel is desire, you were playing with fire,

He helps her. He uncovers her trauma, aids her in working through it, is supportive even when it was probably more than he bargained for.

And maybe it's the past that's talking,

Screaming from the crypt,

Telling me to punish you for things you never did,

Her mother did die at the hands of the Fire Nation, under Zuko's family's orders, whether they came directly from Ozai or not. But he wasn't the one who killed her or ordered her death, and he IS the one who is trying to defeat his father and end the war in favor of balance and peace. She realizes that...

So I just defied it,

...And finds it in her heart to forgive him.

After that, we start on the chorus again.

All that bloodshed, crimson clover,

Uh-uh, the bombs were closer,

I think that last line also refers to a different scene, much earlier in "the Southern Raiders", when Azula attacks the temple...

My hand was the one you reached for,

All throughout the Great War

...And Zuko saves Katara.

(I might do a separate post analyzing just this moment because holy crap there is A LOT there)

Always remember, uh-uh,

The burning embers,

I vowed not to fight anymore,

If we survived the Great War,

I think this refers to the agni Kai specifically, as does most of the bridge. The fire everywhere, the fear, the fact that it's the last battle of the war. It just fits.

It turned into something bigger,

Somewhere in the haze got the sense I'd been betrayed,

Your finger on my hairpin trigger,

Everything is depending on this battle. If they can't defeat Azula, what will happen to the Fire Nation? Will the people now just be under a new, arguably stronger and more powerful tyrant?

Soldier down, on that icy ground,

Looked up at me with honor and truth,

Broken and blue, so I called off the troops,

But they never learn what would have happened, because their combined efforts defeat Azula.

That was the night I nearly lost you,

I really thought I'd lost you

But not before Zuko (or rather, Azula) gives Katara the fright of her life.

(the love and concern on her face is so heartbreakingly beautiful it makes me want to sob)

And now everything is fine! The bridge is over and the next verse is full of hope.

We can plant a memory garden,

Say a solemn prayer, place a poppy in my hair,

For the poppy part, I'd like to address a particular fan theory. In the final scene, Katara has a pink flower in her hair.

According to another source I found, this flower is a pink peony, which symbolizes prosperity and a happy marriage.

I know that this is a peony, not a poppy, but close enough? Also, if it were a poppy, it would symbolize compassion and platonic love.

Either way, I think of this as a kind of goodbye from Zuko to Katara. No matter what the situation was at the end of the series, whether Zuko was in love with Katara, Katara was in love with Zuko, or they were in love with each other, "platonic love" and "happy marriage" were a goodbye. It's either wishing her the best with Aang, or saying they can only be friends because of Aang or because of duty, but that he loves her anyway. (oh look, I made myself cry) At least, I think that in canon context. But within the song, it's a peony and they're now engaged lol

Anyway, the verse continues.

There's no morning glory, it was war, it wasn't fair,

And we will never go back to that,

And then the chorus starts again, but it's tone is far more hopeful than before. The worst is behind them. The war is over.

Bloodshed, crimson clover,

Uh-uh, the worst was over,

My hand was the one you reached for,

All throughout the Great War,

Always remember, uh-uh,

We're burned for better,

I vowed I would always be yours,

'Cause we survived the Great War.

He doesn't need that sleep :) Reccer says: Angsty alternative to the small window of time between the Sanatorium heist and getting back to Eiselcross. Caleb is worried about Essek and is pining and very sad about it

when we bleed, we bleed the same by robinread (9607, Mature) Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence, major character death (but don't worry they get better!) What if Caleb failed to dispel Gaudius' charm on Essek during the battle in Cognouza? Reccer says: I just think Essek should get his own 'light them up, pretty'-moment.

only code it knows is rote survival by Chrome (13115, Teen) Warnings: Feeblemind Trent makes good on his post-Vergesson threats and goes after Essek in Aeor. The nein are stuck dealing with a feebleminded Essek. Reccer says: I'm a sucker for hurt/comfort and characters being stripped of any sort of artifice. This fic is a great example of both of them.

More Things in Heaven and Earth by kaeda (76998, Mature) Warnings: None Caleb and Essek end up inside Tusk Love. That's it. That's the fic. Reccer says: Do you like crack? Do you like crack taken deadly seriously to the point where you end up crying? LOOK NO FURTHER.

Clock Hands by royalgreen (allyoop) (62504, Mature) Warnings: No archive warnings apply It's a canon-divergent series of four fics, where Essek and Caleb are just starting a relationship when the episode 97 reveal hits. Further diverges with an alternate take on the TravelerCon arc, as the fourth fic in the series was started during the hiatus. Reccer says: I like that Essek and Caleb talk to each other -- the conversations are hard and Caleb's rightfully processing some hurt, but they still make the effort to have those conversations. I'm also really intrigued by the author's worldbuilding that they did for the TravelerCon arc.

The Arsonist by chromaryllis (80492, Teen) Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Caleb falls under a curse that's slowly stripping him of his autonomy, magic and mind. Much to his surprise, when the Mighty Nein take off to track down the mage who cursed him, Essek insists on accompanying them. Reccer says: The pining and tension are top-tier. This fic was started in 2019, so it diverges from canon at a much earlier point than a lot of more recent Sg fics, and the flavour is an intriguing change of pace.

I've Seen Injustice in the World (And I've Corrected It) by jakia (5146, Teen) Warnings: No archive warnings apply A "what if Caleb never spoke to Essek after ep 97" AU that has them reuniting a few years after the campaign ended. Reccer says: It was written at the very beginning of the Eiselcross arc, so the author did their own worldbuilding about how the campaign ended that I really enjoyed.

A Favor Accepted by SamJoinedtheReconCorps (187346, General) Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence "Essek had never cared about anyone in his over a century of life - at least that's what he thought until he realized just how much he cared about the new friends he'd found in the Mighty Nein, right as he was losing them. But Caleb offers him a second chance. If only Essek would take it." Canon divergent at episode 97. Reccer says: Long, lovely canon divergence fic about an alternate TravelerCon, with Essek there. And recced three times! Hard Mouth by road_rhythm (216261, Explicit) Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, rape/non-con | lots of Dark and heavy topics but mostly in dreams What if Caleb didn't get the Mind Blank spell in Aeor and Trent was a lot harder to deal with? Nightmares! Aeor! Exhaustion levels! The inherent eroticism of monitoring your narrative foil's pulse! PLUM ORCHARDS! Reccer 1 says: felt like a natural continuation of cannon, very true to the characters and Trent was as awful like he should be Reccer 2 says: Really thoughtful characterizations not just for Essek and Caleb but for all of TM9. Brutal but amazing. This is the Trent arc we should have gotten. Reccer 3 says: It's gruesome, intense, horrific, clever, insightful, and perhaps most of all - true to the characters. It stays with you. And yes, some of stays with you because it is deeply unpleasant - but one of my sharpest memories from it is one of peace.

Some thoughts and theories after watching Hazbin Hotel :

Thoughts :

All in all, I think that compared to its premise, the show was...mild ? I feel like the season could have benefited a lot from more episodes to help flesh out the characters. Each main protagonist and antagonist just got one episode before we rush to the final episode battle and I feel it wasn't enough to care about them. Take Charlie's demon lambs Razzle and Dazzle. They're barely present on screen, their names are only given a couple of episodes before the end and I don't even know if it was Razzle or Dazzle who was killed...so I have trouble having any emotional emotion to his death apart from "aw shucks, I guess"

Likewise, the cannibal colony episode felt very rushed. In one episode everyone is introduced and then rallies to Charlie. At least with Carmilla we got a previous episode where her character, motivations and agenda was fleshed out before she was brought back in the last episodes.

The Vees better play an important role in next season. In this one they just show up, establish a conflict, and then...do nothing ? Velvette claims to have an attack plan+ knows Carmilla is hiding something but doesn't do anything with it, Vox has it out for Alastor but only watches from his couch the final battle...at least Valentino's conflict with Angel is clearly established and further clarified with his following interactions.

All in all, I feel like the antagonistic songs (Stayed Gone, Respectless, Hell' Greatest Dad, You Didn't Know) were more catchy and entertaining than the rest. With some exceptions. But maybe I'm just a sucker for villain songs or duets where each character fights. But Charlie's songs felt ...okay at best. Not for the lack of good singing from the actress, far from that. They mostly felt like the rug could be swept from under her feet at any time, while in comparaison Alastor's songs always felt like he owned every single second of them.

Ah, Alastor. My beloved. He's by far the most entertaining part of this show, partly because he's staying relevant in every single episode (while Angel Dust, Husk and Sir Pentious fell a bit in the background after their one-episode arc), and also because in a story where everyone's motives and goals are clear and for all to see, he remains a complete enigma. How much of his behaviour is him actually caring for Charlie and how much of it is him playing everyone like pawns for his goals ? It's a constant guessing game and it keeps you on your toes.

Charlie could definitely use more moments where she doesn't end up being "rescued" in one way or the other. Sure, they acknowledged that her kindness was a powerful weapon by inspiring others to die for her cause...but even when she gets angry at Adam, or shows him mercy after beating him, something comes along and takes away her moment of glory. Hope she gets better.

Vaggie best girl though. I totally relate to how she wants to protect Charlie from everything.

But for real, people devoted to hating on every single aspect of the show ...could do better with their time. Why are you so mad at everything. It's not that serious.

And now for the theories :

I think Alastor's contract is held by Lillith and it involves not being able to talk about her disappearance, but also depowering him a lot. He implies strongly that his own smile is a way to hide his own weaknesses, and while he's still strong enough to crush small-time sinners, threaten Husk (who's bound to him by his own deal) and frizz Vox' signal, I think he couldn't repeat his Overlord massacre from before. Which he is very careful to not let anyone know about; presenting instead the façade of the all powerful Radio Demon.

I think his real reason to help Charlie is because he knows Lillith is hiding in Heaven. Either Charlie managed to redeem Sinners, which gives him a way to plant spies inside and gather intel, or she goes to war against Heaven; if she wins , she manages to break the doors to Heaven (and Alastor can get inside), but if Heaven is forced to take a stand, Lillith has to intervene.

In every case, Alastor is winning.

And in the meantime, Alastor is also carefully grooming Charlie into a leader (and the heir to the throne of Hell). Her powers are growing with her confidence and Alastor is playing the long game, carefully waiting for the moment he can take advantage of that power. He already has a favor; I'm ready to bet it's for Charlie to break her contract.

His breakdown at the end of the season is hard to decipher...but in my opinion, it's mostly that he realizes how high the stakes are : he almost died to Adam, all in the name of playing Charlie's trusty ally. Was it worth it ? Does he have to keep playing the good guy when his clipped power isn't a match against Heaven's strongest ? And maybe, maybe he is growing fond of the hotel residents and is starting to freak out about that. But he soon reassures himself : it's all in the name of the long game, and once he's done fretting about these pesky feelings of friendship, nothing will get in his way.

What's your favorite friend dynamic in class 1-A/B, what are your hcs for them?

I HAVE MANY, HOW CAN I CHOOSE?!

But! You know what, I wanna talk about 1B first since they don't get as much love and I adore 1B (y'all will never guess who is my favorite from that class).

As a whole, I love the class interactions. Even in smaller units, they work well, to me at least, as a bigger, easy functional one. Even with the little screentime, they still show they do care for each other and have each other's backs.

If I had to choose one of my favorite friend dynamic in Class B, I'm choosing Rin and Shishida. Especially, after their time as a team during the Joint Training Arc. They were a pair during the Cavalry Battle in the Sports Festival, too.

I'll admit I'm a sucker for how big of the difference in their heights is. You got the tiny guy and the big guy team-up! It's adorable!

Headcanons...

Okay, Rin hates cold weather so I can see Shishida giving him a bunch of sweaters to stay warm so he doesn't always have to carry a blanket and often times the others will see Rin just walking through the dormitory in a sweater that practically swallows him and think nothing of it. Like "oh, yep, he's cold".

For Shishida, he often takes naps so whenever Rin isn't using a blanket and he sees him on the couch, he's quick to cover him and warn everyone to not wake him up unless Shishida already told someone to beforehand.

I can also see them often pairing up whenever they can during training. After the JT Arc, they work on communicating without the need to speak and sometimes this goes into when the class is relaxing. It would be a normal afternoon and Rin is in the kitchen and then Shishida comes in without saying anything, but Rin is already passing him a sandwich and tossing him a juice box from the fridge and the others are just like "how did he know???"

I gotta write more fics for these two. WHY HAVEN'T I ALREADY, THAT MUST CHANGE!

For Class A, again, I love them as a whole! I just... they have my heart!

To choose, you know what because they don't get as much love, at least platonically (I like them as a romantic pair, too), I gotta go with Ojiro and Hagakure on this one. I adore both characters so much.

One of my favorite details about them is if you need to find Hagakure, look for Ojiro. Most of the time, she is right there beside him.

Their interactions come off as they've known each other forever even though this is the first year they've been in the same class.

Headcanons I have for them?

They can easily confide in each other. I can see them going to the other for comfort whenever they need to talk to someone.

Another I have is Hagakure has seen Ojiro do at least one or two things that are "not normal", but she's just more amused than "Oh my gosh, I've been deceived".

They would definitely be best friends even after high school. Lunch dates, yoga and everything.

I also see them as the type of friends where they play constant petty, but harmless pranks on each other. Right now in my "Class Antics" series, Hagakure has a grunge against Ojiro for eating her pudding and in turn, he now has a small collection of cropped tops.

For now, that's all I have!!

Thoughts on the 10th ep of Hypmic Rhyme Anima+. Spoilers beware

Oh damn does that mean that kaibyaku has some of of medical issue? that was an IV in his arm im pretty sure or at least some sort of drip. Maybe Jakurai will play some sort of big end of series role that heals him? I hope not, that would be a bit boring but it would make sense since kujaku posse is the only duo not affiliated with the whole TBH trio thing

[On a second rewatch I think its interesting how Kenji specifically says "I can't fall here. Not we. Theres some foreshadowing that he is the only real one here. He specifics in his rap vers that its "that wretched party" that belongs in a grave, not any of our characters in particular]

[also another detail. The necromancy + skull imagery to their rap verse…. they are bringing back old ghosts with their song… they are so tragic. The rap on as second watch is just so much more tragic once you know everything]

Kuko's rap uses the letters T B H as the starts of his verses which is fun

NIce imagery of three dragons fighting for dominance, a very apt metaphor for IchiSamaKuko who are just hothead extremes

oh thats a neat explanation of how they were able to do a lot of supernatural stuff. I feel like it would have been more interesting if it was a hallucination, but hey I'll take that L its not that bad even if a bit uninspired/not very well foreshadowed

Also the vibrations as controlling element, as someone who can hear electronics, is something that would work for me 100% wwwww I would go crazy if i had to hear those annoying sound waves 24/7

I mean exposition episode but its kinda cute actually? I hate that they're doing this after revealing that they're dead but it does put in the point that they were people, not good people, but still people

bro… bro… satoru specifically says in his rap that the world's our kitchen… he has so many kitchen metaphors here…. bro still holds his dream of opening a restaurant with his totally platonic life bro even after death… bro…..

I mean its not that bad of a motive, im not that convinced that they're in the wrong. I'm also very much a sucker for acts of destructive love which is why i may be more inclined to cheer for kaibyakumon

While I do wish that they had fleshed out Kenji's relationship with Satoru and Akira a bit more, I do feel like the duo's dynamic on its own was really well presented before the big reveal. Like what's Kenji's feelings about SatoAkira, why is he so invested in this whole plan other than borderline idolizing kaibyaku?

I feel its hilarious how kenji's just sitting there while kaibyaku is just going on his monologue wwww

Nice, i like how they used Oosaka's island nature into their planning but there Are other bridges going into the mainland im pretty sure?

okay but why should you care? Like hes doing a overall good? Kaibyakumon's goals are aligned with the overall cast's motive of making sure that the government is placed in check so if the team wants us to have a reason to root against them, gotta give a good reason, esp after that backstory

Thoughts on every "Across The Spider-Verse" trailer

I think there is enough footage of the movie by this point to say whether or not this might be for you or not.

Overall first impressions... This looks good! Music seems to be just as good as the first one, style seems to be just as good as the first one, humor just as good, dialogue just as good, characters just as charming.

This basically feels like just more Spider-Verse, and Spider-Verse was great so that's hardly a problem... For the most part.

I personally do have a few very small, tiny issues with the first movie. The first one being that I'm kinda mixed on Miles' voice. Not to say I think it's bad but sometimes I just feel like it could have a little more punch to it.

His voice for the most part seems to be this constant very chill, very cool, very relaxed mood, which works for when Miles is acting chill and relaxed such as when he goes "Nah, I'll find my own way", but other times such as when he goes "Everyone keeps telling me, how my story is supposed to go" I don't know, to me it feels like something's missing, like he could put a just a little more emotion on it.

This was something that I felt during the first movie as well. When Miles needs to be chill and cool he works great, but when he needs to be really emotional, really angry, really excited, and so on, I feel he could go just one extra step to make his lines hit harder... But that's just me.

The second thing I hope they improve a little from the first movie is the action.

The action scenes in Into the spider-verse, whenever they have to swing and jump and move from one place to another, are great. Like the "Leap of faith" scene, that is just a perfect scene, one of my favorites in any movie. When it comes to the movement, everything is flawless. But when it comes to the fights? Maybe I'm alone in this but I barely remember most of the fight choreography of the first movie.

I remember what the fight settings are, the escape from Dock Ock's lab, the fight in aunt May's house, Miles vs Kingpin while the collider goes crazy in the background...

I can remember where the fights are happening and why... But I can never remember what each character does in each fight or how they beat their opponents.

Aside from the "Hey" shoulder touch, a lot of the fight is just wild brawling that kinda starts mixing together after a while. Maybe its because I have the memory of a fish but I just didn't find these fights very remarkable.

Only reason I mention that is because to this day I still haven't seen any Spider-Man media that had action scenes on the same level as the Spectacular Spider-Man show.

I can remember how each fight in that series went because they are all so unique and creative and I really feel like Spider-Verse has what it takes to create the same level of fights.

I really hope this movie isn't just a lot of swinging action and has actual fights in it. The scene with Miles running away from thousands of spider-men looks amazing, but I want to see him actually trying to battle with someone in some creative ways that take advantage of his agility and stuff.

Miguel looks really cool.

Maybe its because I'm a sucker for claws and for characters that act in such a feral way but anytime he's on-screen shoving his claws on the walls and using his arms to run I just can't help but love it. Dude looks like such a beast!

I guess some people might be upset that he's acting like an antagonist but so far he doesn't seem to be unreasonably evil, just someone with a lot of stuff to take care of and a lot of people to manage.

He seems like someone under a lot of stress and I find that very relatable.

Mayday looks adorable. Also, f*ck One More Day.

I'm really excited to see if they're going to talk about whether Spider-Man was born from the loss of Uncle Ben or the Love he received from Uncle Ben because that's a topic I really feel would be perfect to be talked about in a Spider-Man media.

Are heroes born from their tragedies or are they born from something that allows them to overcome tragedy?

I really want to see this theme explored.

Miles' new design looks cool but I think I'm gonna miss his older costume where you can see the traces of the paint sprayed over one of Peter's suits, and I'm specially gonna miss his hooded-with-shoes look.

Designing costumes for Miles must be the best job ever cause that kid looks good in anything.

Just looks at his Ps4 suits. Trying to mix up the colors red and black with a spider theme always ends up in a cool result.

Overall, "Across the Spider-Verse" looks really fun.

Crossing fingers for the action scenes and the topics being discussed.

I don't know if it will be exactly what I want it to be, but even if it isn't, it still looks like it's gonna be a pretty enjoyable experience. Super hyped for it!

Ooooh, okay, so I'm assuming you're asking like movies, shows, books, and comics that have to deal with Star Wars (if not, I'm sorry!) but it's going to be long, so here we go-

Also, I have to break this up into two parts because apparently there's a word limit (rip) so here's 1-3!

Rebels. Hands down. This is totally me being biased because I love found family, but I genuinely think it's one of the best pieces of Star Wars media out there. It's got diverse characters who have depth to them and interact so well with other characters or environments. The premise of the story (aka the building of the Rebellion) is honestly such a cool concept and it's neat to see characters from the Clone Wars and Original Trilogy (Mom, Obi, and Leia) show up as well. The Inquisitors are also ruthless and you've got Darth kriffing Vader as well! Also, there are fan favorites Thrawn and Maul, so who wouldn't enjoy this? Nearly all of the main characters go through arcs, we get to explore other planets that aren't Tatooine, and the last couple of seasons have KILLER soundtracks. Yes, maybe it was aimed for kids, but it's got so much to it,, from the fun, filler-ish episodes to the darker, soul-crushing episodes of the last season. It's just so wonderful, I love it so much.

Aftermath. This is another Rebels situation, where I'm being biased because of found family, but it's really good, trust me. Even if most of the main characters are humans, they're all so interesting and fun and I absolutely love how they interact with each other. This series also has the first canon gay and nonbinary character in Star Wars, so that was really cool! It also takes place after a time that hasn't been really explored in terms of movies and shows (aside from Mandalorian but that hardly counts) and it would've made for a great starting point for the sequels (more or less). There's also a lot of discussion about the Empire and how kriffed up it was and had a character in it who sees it in a way that others don't quite, so I thought those aspects were really interesting as well. I'd kill to see this adapted into a series one day, but I don't think anything could do the books justice.

Rogue One. I don't care if people call it "mid" or say that it's only cool because of the Scarif battle and Darth Vader on the cruiser, no, no, those people have no idea what they're talking about. As someone who is biracial, it was so GOOD to see such a diverse cast on the screen in Star Wars. I'm both Hispanic and Asian, so seeing Cassian, Baze, and Chirrut was so nice and even more so because they all had their accents and didn't change them for the film! Yes, it was unfortunate that they all died in the end (I cried like a big baby) but I understand why they did that. Also, K2SO is hands down one of my favorite droids. I'm a sucker for Ex-Imperials so I absolutely adore him and Bodhi. I think this film is pretty different from the other Star Wars films because it feels like a war movie and unlike the Original trilogy where you KNOW the good guys are going to win because they've got the 70s/80s simple plot vibe to them, this movie has you at the edge of your seat, and though you know they win in the end, you finally get to see all that they lost as well. Also, cinematography wise it is the best Star Wars film and you can't change my mind.

Titanicus by Dan Abnett

I apologise in advance for my English. It is not my first language and my reading comprehension is unfortunately much better than my speaking comprehension. I ask you to forgive bumpy phrasing and strange expressions!

I finished the novel a few days ago and am very, very pleased. I was well entertained, got the usual Abnett flavour that makes the Warhammer-verse more colourful, and had suspense and adventure.

But of course it doesn't go off completely without friction.

The end seemed rather abrupt to me, some things remained completely unresolved (what will become of Prinzhorn and the crew of the Victrix after the ... differences of opinion? Will someone take care of the remains of this tower? First the leak of the Heresy documents is a civil war thing and suddenly it's enough to say "haha, it was only fake!" and everything is fine again? With two fleets in orbit?) But maybe that will be cleared up in another novel. In any case, I would like to continue following the adventures of Legio Invicta.

And once again Abnett finds it really difficult to include female characters. He clearly tries hard, but doesn't get beyond his usual "diplomat, soldier" and they are also either stereotypical (the emotional Mechanicum woman, the hysterical Famula, the tough-motherly soldier ...) or men with breasts (the young Outland woman got heavy "I don't see gender"-treatment). As far as I can tell, there was not a single woman on any of the Titan crews. No female princeps, moderati or steersman. And that's with over thirty Engines involved. At first I was incredibly positively surprised that there was an Enby character (Sonne), but unfortunately they quickly became "he". Too bad.

But I don't read the Black Library books because I appreciate their authors for their progressive views (I think there's a female author by now, at least that's what I've been told), but because I want to see things explode in the most bombastic, thrilling terms imagineable. Heroic adventures in the grimmest of all the darknesses!

And Abnett delivers that in the best possible way. The description of the engine battles is so wonderful, you can almost feel the earth shaking beneath the god machines. The sequence in which a Titan begins its walk alone gives you goosebumps. You are shown an alien world in which man and machine can no longer be separated at some point - and losing oneself in the depths of a Titan is not a pleasant fate for every Princeps. But each of these men is incredibly proud to be among the best of the best - you can feel it in every sentence. They may belong to the Mechanicum and they may be largely no longer human - but they are something entirely their own. I like that this strangeness is so clear. I'm such a sucker for big machines and Abnett's Titans scratch that itch so good!

Wonderful details like the warhounds getting balance tails and really acting like a hunting pack drew me deep into the action. The glimpse into the heads of the crews was impressive and the strangeness of the Mechanicum was fantastically worked out. The description of the Noosphere was very, very Matrix. I liked it. The Skitarii were also given contour, which for me is often lacking with other authors.

In addition, small, loving details like a glimpse into the shop of a toy maker in the Hive or the confused spirit of an old Moderati make the immersion perfect.

I can also get over the fact that the machines and the staff of the Dark Mechanicum remain pale and do not get beyond the "horrible, completely insane monsters" status. Yes, they are not even allowed to do more than bleat their names like deranged Pokémon. All right, I'll live with that. The loyal engines are all the more colourful for it.

And, of course: Gorge Orwell. That's no typo. 😁

All in all, one of the best Black Library books I've read in a long time. Definitely in my top ten.

10. that little eyeroll and smile blake does in v1 when yang picks up the chess piece in the emerald forest and says "how about a cute little pony?" they've only been partners for about for 30 minutes at this point, and blake has spent multiple episodes practically screaming "I DON'T WANT TO GET CLOSE TO ANYONE, I AM A BAD PERSON WHO DOESN’T DESERVE HAPPINESS." and still yang gets the prickly ex-terrorist to smile. gay.

9. yang's reply to blake at mountain glenn. blake is still so torn up about running away from home, her actions while with the white fang, running from adam, her present, her future. and all yang says is that she knows she won't run away from a challenge. that she's strong enough to face it and come out on the other side better than she was. the utter faith of it all!!

8. all of v4 lmao. but i have narrow that down so it's when yang looks at the pile of books in her very first scene in that volume and then turns away with the saddest look on her face. she misses just blake so much even though she left!!! and she doesn't want to because missing someone has never brought back the people she cares about, but she is anyway! bees angst is usually not my favorite but when it hits it hits and v4 and v5 were it

7. the dummied out cherry stem yang ties with her tongue while staring directly at blake in v2. she is extremely gay and she is trying so, so hard to show the girl she likes that she's interested. bless her. crwby, yall are cowards for taking this away from us

6. nora at the rally going "friends? just friends? i think they have more going on". nora is easily one of the most emotionally intelligent characters on the show so when she says two people wanna kiss i believe her. it's also notable that this is the first time anyone in-show has acknowledged blake and yang have something happening, even if they aren't necessarily together. praying that there's a followup to this in v10 where she outright asks what the deal is now that they're back from survivor island in the Time Pit

i'm a relatively new fan having only picked up rwby in late 2019. my friends who were into it kept telling me it was pretty gay and one friend routinely sent bumbleby fanart because she knew it would entice me to start the show faster. and sure i thought they were cute, but i was still unsure if this was for real or not. but this scene. this one right here is the one where i went, "oh. oh, we're actually doing this.” there is no real way to read this as other than romantic. the framing, the timing, like.... man.

i’m also a sucker for devotion in ships and if sacrificing an arm to save the one you love and not even blaming them for running away isn’t devotion, i don’t know what it is.

if number 5 convinced me, burning the candle was the one that got me on the train. here was my reaction from a friend sending gifs of this without too much context

and then i finally watched and got hella emotional. it’s a lot of firsts: yang opening up about her past, disagreement, blake allowing herself comfort. but they still manage to talk, work through how they feel, and leave better than they were. and i think it’s what i love about them the most? regardless of what happens, they have each others backs and always work toward a compromise. ugh. god.

yes it’s kind of cheating to put two different scenes in one spot but they share real estate in my brain. these are the pinnacle of v5 bees angst, for me. there’s a lot left unsaid and literal continents between them, but they’re both saying the same thing. “i miss her a lot. i really wish she was here.” and at this point they haven’t been in the same room for almost 2 seasons. they have a lot of emotional ground to cover when they see each other and even more healing to do.

regardless of it all, they can’t stop thinking about each other. someway, somehow, they want to make their more-than-friendship work.

In that little scared, hopeful voice

and like. the look on yang’s face as she sees blake for the first time is of utter awe. this person she never thought she’d see again singled her out in a room of utter chaos looking just as amazed to see her.

after that last anon you answered, i'm now curious about how you pace your stories! i'm usually a little too excited for all the things i want to happen, so i do a lot of skipping ahead and getting to the meat for a fast-paced story. but!! your space cowboy stories are SO GOOD and i know they wouldn't be the same with my kind of pacing, so yeah. i'm curious ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Okay, this was another question I had to think about for a long time … I often conflate pacing and overall story structure, so fair warning, that is probably gonna happen here.

I’m going to start off with a fairly obvious fact, which is that different stories require different pacing, and that the rules in fanfiction, I find, are a little looser.

This is because we rarely need much exposition in fanfiction, since we’re assuming our readers already know these characters and these settings, so we don’t have to worry too much about explanations or descriptions. That being said, there is always some world-building (particularly in AUs), and that can be pretty challenging to insert without disrupting the … narrative flow, I guess?

There’s a sort of … ebb and flow, overall, to a story. There are quiet times and loud times. There’s talking and then there’s action. Now, the other reason why I say fanfiction is different is because I am perfectly happy reading a story that is literally just characters being domestic, or having emotional conversations (communication, I love it so much) or … every other fun trope in fandom.

I think the way I’ve always approached pacing is to fret about it in the planning stage. Once I start writing, I’m very character-focused, so my main concern is keeping everybody as in-character and “realistic” as possible, since I usually already have an outline with all the plot/emotional beats in place (written or up in my head). But pacing does come up at times even when I have most of the story planned, and I think the biggest indicator of a pacing issue is when you get stuck while writing.

Getting stuck isn’t always about that narrative flow — there are hundreds of reasons why I get writer’s block — but I have found that sometimes it’s because I’m writing something that’s disrupting the flow. Sometimes it’s a dialogue scene that runs too long, and characters are saying/explaining things that I could just show or summarize in a descriptive paragraph. Sometimes it’s a scene that’s totally redundant, period, and I scrap it entirely.

In other words, skipping ahead and getting to the meat is totally valid on occasion ;D

As for the space cowboys … *throws hands in the air* … Here’s a look as to how that mess got organized into a semi-coherent flow of words — massive, likely incoherent ramble under the cut!

First off: a one-story example — The Six-Gun Sound.

That story has the most basic pacing ever. Action scene at the start, exposition/dialogue scene right after that sets up the main plot/motive for the characters, followed by a steady build that goes right into that heist. The heist then slowly builds until BAM. Everything goes wrong, there are literal explosions, and then a climax of both the main plot-line and the emotional plot-line. (There is pacing set for both of those when I plan, usually. The plot informs the emotional beats and vice versa, depending on which is more important at any given time.)

In shorter words: action, calm, build-up to more action, big action, calm, and then the resolution. That kind of “ebb and flow” is basically how most stories work, I believe. If you have that going on in your tales, then I think you’re golden :D

I totally break those rules in many of my other tales, but, yeah. There it is ;)

Now, secondly: the entire Trouble’s Making Everything All Right series.

That is just … well, a giant mess, but it’s one that I find works for me? I might be confusing pacing with other parts of narrative structure, but overall, there’s a certain ebb and flow that leads to the first huge climax (which I believe is Short Change Heroes). Um, I’m going to try and explain and hope that it helps you?

Trouble Coming is essentially my expositional story (though I initially had no idea how long this series would go). If, for example, in your own writing you feel like “skipping” all that establishing information, well, I’m gonna be horrible and give you that old cliché — show and don’t tell (much).

I still had to explain some stuff in that story, but having no Team Voltron, having Lance and Keith sitting around that poker table, cheating at cards (Keith), and flirting as a distraction (Lance), while being tough as nails, pretty much establishes that something not good has happened. Especially as Keith worries about making ends meet.

Following that, the attack afterwards, which they treat as business as usual, barely blinking at the deaths they cause … Again, I don’t think I needed to tell you guys that they had been through some bad stuff. And they were continuing to go through some bad stuff. I don’t actually explain much until more than halfway through the story, when they’re back at the inn and there’s a moment of calm. (Again, I’m not great at pacing, but I tried to put a bit of ebb and flow in this series as a whole.) (Action at the beginning, sort of, and then calm.)

Six Gun Sound is pretty much all action, and it retroactively explains partially how Lance and Keith came to be the way they are (and how they got together ;D), and since you’ve already seen how jaded and broken they are in Trouble Coming, I like to think it makes for a sharper, harsher contrast to see them more … good just as they cross that line into becoming The Two McClains. (Lots of action/emotional conflict.)

Following that action-filled, emotional story, we’ve got Broken Bone World, which jumps forward to the more jaded Lance and Keith, but this time, we get to see them relax and perfectly in love with each other — and generally more settled in their new mercenary existence. (More calm.)

And then, Shuffling Madness, back in the past, is lots of action, lots of suffering — I hoped that seeing them as Paladins after three stories as space cowboys would be quite impactful in hindsight? Basically, seeing them being so optimistic about their chances makes you wince on their behalf because you, as the reader, already know how they end up. (Plenty of action/emotional turmoil.)

This is the point where the series is actually building towards the main climax. I had hinted at Keegin Dras going all the way back to the first story. But Paradise City is where the tension, um, kicks up, I guess (some of y’all may remember that cliffhanger? Er, sorry?) (Build-up to lots of action with a sudden stop and cliffhanger.)

I really like contrast, so this is my own personal opinion/writing style, but, um, yeah, there you go.

Edit: Damn, I totally forgot to mention Heaven Above You, which was probably one of my favourites to write — it prolongs the tension between Paradise City and Short Change Heroes, but also, while it isn’t too heavy on the action, I think of it is as still tension building because it shows that defining moment when Lance chose to take a life that wasn’t a direct threat to him. It’s an almost purely expositional story, but it sets up the emotional conflict of Short Change Heroes, while Paradise City sets up the main plot conflict?(Bit of action, mostly calm, but lots of emotional turmoil.)

Short Change Heroes is a damn disaster, but it’s a disaster I kinda really loved writing. There are just so many conversations. It really shouldn’t have had that many dialogue scenes. Holy crap, that war council is a story in and of itself, and I am definitely not Tolkien, holy crap, no.

But, um, here’s where I contradict myself and say — I didn’t care about pacing, I just wanted to get these people (Team Voltron + The Two McClains) actually talking because communication rocks, and they absolutely would’ve wanted to talk a ton after a year apart.

I did try and chop up some of the dialogue/exposition with a few action-type scenes (the interrogation scene, then that gang ambush, and that brief attack during the war council), but those scenes were also key to the plot-line and the emotional stuff. I was focused on pacing when I chose where to place those scenes, so that things would feel balanced and move forward smoothly.

So, if in your own writing, you feel like you want to skip ahead, but you also feel like whatever information you need to impart (or interaction these characters need to have) is important to the plot/pacing (e.g. you need a quiet moment before battle or you need to show off an action scene before you can get to that juicy emotional resolution), find a way to make it fun for you to tell! I am a sucker for gritty honesty or sappy confessions or no-holds-barred arguing, so that’s how I handle some exposition. I love creating angsty situations instead of just explaining that someone’s had a bad time.

Basically, in summation: I try to keep action and moments of stillness somewhat balanced.

— A huge burst of action demands a longer moment of quiet/reflection, or a longer emotional conversation and/or resolution afterwards.

— A massive emotional fight/discussion demands that the characters either have time apart or some kind of quiet/temporary peace after (even if the fight isn’t resolved right away or the discussion hasn’t unloaded everything in their heads).

This is my preferred rhythm to story-telling, both on small (one story) or large (series) scales. This way a story doesn’t feel too stilted, or overly long (too many quiet moments?), or like it isn’t letting up/allowing the reader to settle (too many action moments?) — an even rhythm/flow carries the reader along easily (hopefully).

I break these rules of mine often, but this is a general rant ;D

I really, really hope this has helped you, that this hasn’t bored you to death, and that I haven’t been totally nonsensical. I am honestly not even sure I answered this question at this point — it kinda just turned into a freakishly long ramble. *sweats* Sorry!

hi I know you’ve just finished field work so pls dont take this the wrong way kay, I'm only asking out of love. Do you have any sastiel fics planned for the future? Regardless of your answer to that, tell me about your favorite tropes or just like, general Stuff, when it comes to both writing and reading those two together. Everyone’s got different tastes right & i think is always fun to see people explaining (or trying to explain) why they're into certain stuff

Oh heck yes I have more sastiel I want to write, don’t you worry.

I want to try some canon!verse scenes. I’ve spent a lot of time writing Castiel, but didn’t study Sam’s character closely until I launched off on the first draft of Field Work. That story was posted this year, but the process of finishing and editing it was about two years’ worth of work.

If there’s a story concept or an AU you’d really like to see me tackle, I’m all ears! Just let me know. After all, Field Work came from a random request on the sastiel tag - I saw it, and in a few minutes the scenes from the first chapter were in my head.

This ask tickled me so much, because I would love to talk about sastiel but I’m better at answering questions than trying to write an organized Ship Manifesto. So now I have a relatively narrow avenue of attack!

That said? I’m still gonna write paragraphs.

I’m busily working my way through the sastiel available on ao3, but I can tell you right now that I’m always a slut for Castiel reassuring Sam that he’s Worthy and Lovable and A Good Person (and for Sam to do the same for Cas). I’m also a big, BIG fan of anytime Castiel gets to talk to Sam about the Big Bad Shit that’s happened in a way that gives them both relief and bonds them, if not absolution (because sometimes absolution just… well… isn’t appropriate or possible). Castiel getting to apologize/explain himself for the choices he made that negatively impacted Sam, and vice versa, and each discovering that they’re still loved and valued by the other because they have a similar tendency to judge themselves more harshly, and fail to forgive themselves, while forgiving their loved ones even when the consequences of poor choices were horrific. Good God these two need a confidante and a champion (and a mitigating voice), and I love it when they find it in one another.

Also, it should be noted, I prefer to take my Castiel the way I take my coffee; that is to say hot, strong, and bitter af. I love it when Castiel is characterized as the soldier he is, with real doubts about the chain of command he came from and a massive distrust of authority. I love it when his battle scars are as relevant to who he is as Sam’s are to him. I love it when Castiel is a sarcastic shit who struggles to take orders even if they came straight from the Big Man himself. And I love it when Sam is internally rage-y, fighting his own temper and his own demons, when he’s drowning in self-loathing, when he takes zero shit, when he questions Castiel and comes back at him and stands up for himself (and others). Trust is slow coming between a couple paranoid war vets with PTSD and a Complicated History so fraught with lies and broken promises you could write a soap opera on it. And yet. Both of these guys are the grand fucking champions of giving people second chances and letting past offenses go - I think they need each other. To help one another heal. To remind each other that they’re not monsters. To remind each other that there are good goddamned reasons to keep on keepin’ on even when the skeletons in their respective closets are dancing the fucking samba. Being a good man isn’t something you’re born as. It’s not something you lose with a single mistake. Being a good man means taking responsibility for and the consequences of your actions, actively caring, and trying hard not to repeat past mistakes - and those are things they both already do. Red_River’s story “Light Up the Sky” has a fantastic quote from Castiel that I think succinctly sums this up:

“You are no monster, Sam Winchester,” Castiel told him, the words less than a whisper. “You are not the best man I have ever known, but you try the hardest to be.”

So, spiraling off into AU territory, there’s a couple things I really like in that regard. I’m a sucker for Magical!Sam (thank @awabubbles!), and she’s got a story series started where White Magic Sam accidentally summons a badly wounded Soldier of God Castiel (have I mentioned I love Soldier of God Cas? Because I so fucking do, omg). Just, you know, think about Sam tending his hothouse full of rare plants while Castiel (who isn’t healing as fast as he expects to be healing, dammit) follows him around like an irritated cat. Don’t touch me, don’t touch me, don’t touch me, wait don’t leave my sight dammit don’t touch me, wait okay rub my ears while I shove my face into your lilies.

Insert deflowering joke here.

I also adore non-paranormal contemporary romances (Castiel is a firefighter responding to a minor fire in Sam’s apartment building, aaaaand go~), high fantasy sword and sorcery (especially if it involves Castiel as a knight, have I mentioned I like soldier Cas? I have, haven’t I?), historical romances, and I hear there’s some excellent merfolk fiction but I haven’t as yet gotten to it. To be honest, I’ll give anything a fair shake at this point. I’m still discovering the fanfiction that’s out there, so in six months Idk, I could be begging for locked-room mysteries or something.

The thing I love the most about sastiel is how supportive the fandom is. Everyone is so encouraging about everyone else’s work - if you wanna write a thing there’s always someone else like ‘YEAH! Do the thing!’ And y’all show the fuck up. I cannot begin to express how much it meant that people were reading what I wrote and telling me about it. It’s renewed my commitment to leave feedback on works as well, because I want to pay it forward.

Sure, there are things I’m definitely not interested in reading that are out there in the sastiel tag, but I’m not here to throw down a list of Stuff That Annoys Me - I’d rather talk about the stuff I love. That seems to be the modus operandi of the community as a whole, and that gives me so much life. I hope it never changes.

Don’t worry - I’m slow as fuck but I’m not going anywhere.

1.How old were you when you read the Percy Jackson books?

I was 11 when I first started reading them 😂 I was a tiny bby

2.What year did you read them in?

Does this mean academic year or actual year? Because I read them in year 7 (6th Grade) so that would have been in somewhere around 2010 I think???

3. What caused you to read them?

My older brother had read them and recommended The Lightning Thief to me and a selection of books were being given out at my school for free to encourage kids to read and The Lightning Thief happened to be one of them. And the rest is history 😂

4.Which of the series have you read in the PJO universe?

All of them~ I have read every book in the PJO, HoO, KC, and MCGA series and I’ve just preordered The Dark Prophecy at my local book store so I can keep up to date with ToA. I’ve also read all the side books like Demigod Diaries and Demigods and Magicians, and the two books of Professor Percy and they’re all aligned in chronological order on my book shelve because I’m a fucking nerd OTL

5. What is your favorite series in the PJO universe?

Oh god help me. I don’t know??? I love them all for different reasons??? I find myself ranting most to other people about HoO but the Magnus Chase series is probably my favourite because not only is it a wonderful story but The Hammer of Thor was the first time I had ever read about a genderfluid character and the way Alex was portrayed was just so wonderful to me that I will reread that book over and over again, specifically on his pages because it’s kinda like seeing a little bit of myself in my favourite world. It heightens my sense of escapism and belonging there that’s for sure XD

6.Who is your favorite character?

Overall?? Either Zeus (because he was the world’s first fuckboi) or Bianca Di Angelo. As an older sibling, I could never imagine leaving my younger sibling all alone just because I wanted a bit more freedom in my life. It’s incredibly selfish and I just can’t ever forgive her for it. She may have been a hero and an interesting character and I was really torn up when she died but I will never forgive her for the way she treated her younger brother.

8.What are your headcanons?

THERE ARE TOO MANY TO LIST!!! But one of my main headcanons that I will list here (I’ll message you others if you ever read the whole universe) is that Nico and Anubis know each other and get along. Now this started because they’re described as looking very similar to each other (black, shaggy hair, dark brown eyes, pale af with a similar fashion sense of just black on black) and it kind of snowballed once I read Son Of Neptune. Because to me, it would make so much sense for Nico to know about other pantheons long before the other demigods. Why? Because Death is universal across mythology. And Nico, as the son of Hades, needs to know about his death rituals which- I think- would lead him to researching the other pantheons and learning that immortality really is forever. But yeah, i just love the idea of Nico and Anubis being friends and looking out for one another because they both understand the stigma around death but they’re both actually kind of dorky the minute they stop being angry??? But yeah, there’s just one of my headcanons and look how long that took to summarise OtL

10.Do you write it?

I try to OTL it’s just, with characters i love and adore so much I’m so scared of doing them a disservice??? If that makes sense? I’ve got a thousand scenarios in my head but when I try to write I end up starting at a blank screen for 30 minutes before going back and rereading the books again XD

11.What’s your favorite scene?

From PJO- When Percy offers Pandora’s Pithos to Hestia as an offering. It’s just such an important act at the time and I just love it so much!!!!From HoO- uuuurgh it’s a tie up between Jason comforting Nico after Croatia and then the ending with the two camps and Reyna being a badass. From ToA- I know this isn’t really a scene but when Apollo makes the remarked about Achilles, Briseis and Patroclus because Iliad jokes~~ 😂 but other than that, probably when Apollo starts to realise how shit a parent he actually is and feeling kinda guilty about it. I just love seeing him evolve as a person rather than stay the same immortal fuckboi forever. From KC- THE FUCKING CAN OPENER!!! I laughed for about an hour when I first read the bit when Carter finds out about Horus possessing him. I actually couldn’t read past that bit without laughing over and over again 😂 From MCGA- When Alex was lying down on the Bifrost. I always imagine it as a very beautiful scene because he’s got this rainbow light all around him but it also makes me feel sad for some reason I’ve yet to pin down. But yeah, Alex being pretty and melancholy surrounded by rainbow light~ From Demigods and Magicians- probably when Setne gets sucked into the snow globe. That was a good day reading that.

I have a few! Solangelo is my favourite altogether tho because I love the contrast between the two (I’m a sucker for the night/day/death/life symbolism in a relationship) but I also love Percabeth, Jiper, Sam/Amir, Fierrochase, Sadie/Anubis/Walt (what is that relationship called??? I can’t remember OtL)

Like the way he’s actually starting to genuinely care and he feels mildly guilty at how much they’re supporting and caring about him when he’s done none of that for them???

Reyna and Nico. Can’t stand that ship. Also Octavian and Rachel. Or anyone with Rachel really. Same with Percy and Artemis??? Like, no???? Artemis is a maiden for eternity, she has no interest in men whatsoever??? And Rachel is the oracle of Delphi so she’s sworn to not be with people for as long as she is the oracle??? I just don’t get it.

16.What house do you think Percy is in?

See this is really hard! Percy is certainly brace and noble enough to be in Gryffindor but he is fatally loyal to the people he loves and he works incredibly hard which are more Hufflepuff traits! But at the same time he can be cunning and tricky when he’s in a fight. But he’s not really ambitious enough to be a Slytherin and, while intelligent, he won’t follow up on an idea just because of the allure of knowledge so he’s not really a Ravenclaw…urgh I want to put him in Hufflepuff but idk. Either Hufflepuff or Gryffindor.

17.What house do you think Annabeth is in?

Either Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. Like she will battle past her ADHD and dyslexia for the pursuit of knowledge and to better specialise herself in the areas she wants to but at the same time she walked into her worst nightmares, then fell into Tartarus, got out of Tartarus, then went to war all within the span of a month and a half. That takes Gryffindor courage right there. So yeah, either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw.

18.Thoughts on Luke?

I always feel really bad for Luke. Because he’s so relatable. It’s easy to see how he made the choices he did because he honestly thought that the Titans could be better because the gods mistreatment was all he had ever known. And it hurts what happened to him because he is the classic tragic hero; he made the wrong choices and the minute he realises what a mess he’s made of things, it’s already too late to stop anything. But he was able to do the right thing in the end and I just get really emotional whenever I think of that scene. It hurts too much 😭

19.What race do you think Percy is?

I don’t really know. I mean, we know he’s got a lot of his appearance from Poseidon so that means he should look very Grecian/Mediterranean, maybe he even has a sort of olive skin tone??? Idk. I guess whenever I think of Percy I just think of the kids I used to see on skateboards down at the local park. But yeah, probably Grecian if I had to pick.

20.What do you think of Frank and Hazel’s relationship?

I think it’s really cute. I like how it’s so fresh??? Because with Percabeth that relationship grew out of friendship over five books and Jiper has a natural flow to it with all the fragility and insecurity of a new relationship so it still works. But Hazel and Frank knew each other for such a short period of time before they started crushing on each other and I think it’s sweet to see kind of the love and first sight thing but warped slightly due to the complications that come with their lives. It’s interesting to see them struggle through all the confusion of a brand new relationship but still trying to keep themselves together. It’s nice to see that kind of love rather than the comfortable love of Percabeth or the steady love of Jiper. 21.What do you think of Calypso and Leo’s relationship?

I love it!!! At first I was skeptical but their banter and denial was really funny and the way Leo was determined to make it back to her. I had always wanted someone to treat Calypso right and I’m glad that Leo has someone now who will see underneath all the humour as well as appreciating him for himself :)

22.Do you follow Rick on any social media platforms?

Yes! I follow him on Twitter and on Tumblr~

23.What did you think of the movie?

I liked the visual effects but that was about it. And even then it was like, nice snakes, now where’s the plot??? I really did not like those movies. They need to be buried with the Avatar movie that never existed in my opinion.

24. What are your thoughts on the upcoming musical?

I’m really looking forward to it! I think they cast a really good Percy and I really like what I’m hearing so far. I love musicals and I understand there’s a bigger limit on what you can do on a stage compared to a film so I’m more lenient towards differences between the stage and the book.

25.Do you own any of the books and if so, which ones?

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH…..I have doubles of all of them OTL but there’s a reason for that!! One copy for myself so that I can always read them and then I lend out the second copies to my friends who are curious about this world that I won’t ever shut up about.

26.Which character are you most like, personality wise?

Idk really. Maybe Will??? Because I’m kinda easy going and I try to help out other people but if you piss me off you will know about it??? And it always takes people by surprise if they don’t know me very well at how angry I can be??? But yeah, maybe Will.

27.Which character do you look the most like?

If any of the characters have rainbow hair, I have not been informed of this! Nah but I don’t know. Without my coloured hair I just kinda look like a ghost with brown hair and colour changing eyes OTL Maybe Sadie because I used to be blonde but I dyed my hair so many times it turned brown and she streaks her hair a lot so yeah, Sadie Kane :)

27.If you could cosplay as any character, who would it be?

Okay I have cosplayer Nico before but I’m going to be cosplaying Alex at the next con I’m going to (unfortunately without her heterochromia because I’m allergic to contact lenses OtL)

28.What’s your favorite cover from the series?

Is it bad to say Blood of Olympus because Leo’s got a chainsaw in it? XD but yeah, actually Hammer of Thor because the Wolf mask on that cover with the eerie green glow across it is really cool!!

29.What are some books you would recommend to another fan?

Assuming these are books related to the PJO universe then The Demigod and Magicians crossover collection are definitely worth the read (assuming you’ve read both HoO and KC) and the Magnus Chase series because they are definitely worth branching away from the Greek and Roman gods.

If that means other series in general then His Dark Materials for definite and probably the Iliad.

30.Do you have any merchandise related to the series?

I do! I have a tshirt with Percy’s quote about procrastination on it (deadlines don’t seem real to me until I’m staring one in the face), and I have a matching charm bracelet, hair bow, earrings and necklace set with pendants that all say Camp Half-Blood on them

31.Any fan casts?

Not really. As long as they look the age of the characters *glares at the film* and they have the majority of the same features *again glares at the films* then I don’t really mind too much.

32.What did you think of the ending of Heroes of Olympus, if you read it?

I personally loved it. I agree it did feel a tiny bit anticlimactic over in Greece what with the gods kicking butt for the first time in the entire series but what happened between the camps and Gaia’s forces there was really cool. And the reconciliation of the camps afterwards and how everyone was getting along was really nice. And of course, the fact that Calypso was finally freed was a big A+ in my book.

33.Would you want to be connected to the Greek, Egyptian, Roman, or Norse Gods?

I think, as far as connected in the PJO universe way goes, I’d want to be a Magician for the House of Life. Because at least then I get a choice in whether or not I want a god in my life. If you’re a Demigod you get no choice whatsoever. If you’re just a magician then other than fighting in the apocalypse, you have a choice on what you want to do with your life (plus magicians can use electronics without calling down monsters on their heads)

34.What character from the universe do you think you would be best friends with?

Idk. It’s a tie up between Sadie, Leo and Magnus because they all have a sarcastic wit which I find hilarious but they all have differences that make me want to befriend them. Like with Sadie I could hang out with her any time of the week, and she has a really gives-no-shit attitude that I love (because I give too many shits about things) but at the same time she really cares a lot about her family and her friends which is important to me. Leo is hilarious in general but at the same time really insecure about stuff and I love helping people out and learning from them so I’d probably latch on to Leo and not stop bothering him about machines because all of it is really interesting. And then Magnus is a sarcastic little nerd who tries to be tough but is actually a sunflower and yeah, I have a lot of friends like that 😘😘😘

35.What’s the saddest scene from all the books?

Bob asking whether Percy would say hello to the stars and sun for him. That kills me every time to even think about. Fuck, now I’m crying 😭

36.What scene makes you the happiest?

Any scene of platonic friendship and love is guaranteed to make me happy. But most of all, when Hades told Nico he wanted him to be happy. That just killed me inside because it’s such a difference from the Last Olympian and Nico deserves happiness after all the shit he’s been through.

Aka the wonderful, sweet lil sunshine that loves literally everyone and makes everyone feel so comfortable and relaxed (and sometimes not relaxed depending on how boisterous he gets). I love him because even though he has all of these amazing qualities, he is independent to a fault (daring to argue with Winters I scream he’s–), highly emotional (losing his friends literally KILLED HIM) and anxious (though he hides it well behind his EVERYTHING IS FINE face or his dead inside face).

Your Three Best Friends: Don Malarkey, Alex Penkala, Skip Muck (aka the squad)

The One You Don’t Get Along With: Henry Jones. Sweet, sweet Henry. It’s no one’s fault, but he’s so composed and so put together that you honestly don’t know what to do with him. Try and joke with him? He just stares at you (maybe smiles pitifully). Try and initiate conversation? Part of you burns because he takes himself so damn seriously and you decide never to try that again lmao. You like him… you just don’t know what to do with him and him with you, so you just stay out of each other’s hair.

Who I Ship You With: Shifty Powers. The ENFP plus the shy, cute, unassuming, but also incredibly brave and intelligent Shifty Powers? HELLO HOW FREAKING ADORA- I digress. Shifty is wonderful because he’s mellow and gentle, gets embarrassed easily if you try and shower him with affection, but somehow keeps cool in the middle of combat, never gets injured, etc. His name is Shifty for a reason, one minute he’s there and the next you’re like ?? hello ?? Shifty? ANYWAY. I love him a lot. He’s like the least anxious person. Whenever you have your anxious moments he’s there to cuddle you and tell you in his sweet lil accent that everything is gonna be just fine (dont mind me im crying).

Lil Blurb??: Your charisma got you here. Your athleticism, sharp wit, ability to make solid decisions under pressure, and aptitude for route planning got you here. You were a valuable assistant to Colonel Strayer. Your gender also got you here: pouring coffee for him at 6:30 in the morning, tapping your foot with a bright smile on your face. You pretended it was fine that you were reduced to such menial tasks. You knew it was too good to be true that you would be used for much after being moved from the WAAC to the 101st. You had trained hard with a handful of women to handle the difficulties of battle–you would never see combat, but you would get as close as any woman ever had.

But that still meant making coffee for all of the men, pouring it, and often being left out of discussions. You kept reminding yourself that it was insane that you were here, in England, part of the planning for D-Day. You wouldn’t get to drop though, not like the boys. Knowing that crushed you, not because you particularly wanted to see combat and death, but because you had grown so close to the everyone. To be left behind was cruel. You were a favorite on Easy Company’s sports teams. It was Buck Compton that had used his charms to sway you into joining their soccer game. You were just as uneasy as the men, but once the game started, it was like you’d been playing with them forever.

Malarkey, Penkala, Muck, you, Compton, and Luz versus Guarnere, Toye, Heffron, Talbert, and Skinny Sisk. It was the most fun you’d ever had, throwing elbows and repeatedly trying to trip Tab (who kept throwing hands and swearing he was just going easy on you). You even managed to get a laugh out of Toye, something you hadn’t accomplished before. You patted yourself on the back for that one. But damn, it would hurt to be cut from the friends you’d made. You had brothers. These boys were like your brothers now, far from home, keeping you company in the daylight.

But, despite those boys being the group you had become so close with so quickly, it was the charming Southerner that caught your attention right off the bat. Powers was all broad shoulders passed down from generation to generation; he was meant to hold a gun, you could tell by the way he cradled his rifle against his arm. It was like an extension of himself, but that wasn’t the only thing you admired about the unassuming Shifty. He was a hell of a shot, probably the best in the company, but he was about as quiet, humble, and bashful as they came. And you thrived on making him blush.

First it was through subtle compliments when you caught him alone, without Tab or Skinny by his side. You would sit while Shifty cleaned his rifle, admiring his perfect form when shooting or suggesting he was the best you’d ever seen. You didn’t push him, you read him well enough to know he was easily made uncomfortable. You asked him about home, about his favorite gun, about the squirrels he used to shoot up in Virginia. Shifty would smile fondly at you, then his shoes, and lean back against the wall or the back of his chair, tipping his head back and squinting his eyes. He always took his time talking–he was deliberate. You loved that about him. When you sat with him it was like time stopped for just a sweet moment, like the anxieties and the frustration that fluttered in the back of your mind stopped.

One night, after sharing a drink or two, you both wandered into the nearby cow pasture and he told you about the farm he grew up on. “I did always like cows the most,” he murmured, running his hands along the dew-ridden grass, the other hand rubbing his jaw. “Big eyes, big ears.” He trailed off, screwing up his nose, trying to think of other reasons why he liked them so much. “Well I suppose they never did want nothing bad for nobody,” he finished with a short nod, drawing both hands behind him to lean on. “Chickens were too cranky, and the horses were too smart for me. I almost got kicked once. My daddy almost lost it, started hollerin’ about how I needed to stop sneakin’ up on ‘em. I was too quiet.”

You, yourself, had never been so quiet in your life. You were laying on your side, fingers threaded through the grass beside Shifty’s hand. You wanted nothing more than to keep listening, to drink his words in, to know him from the inside out, but he stopped and furrowed his brow. “You know, I never tried cow tippin’ before.” You looked up through your eyelashes, face flushed from the alcohol that still burned in the back of your throat.

“What do we do, huh, Powers? Do we just run at them?” You had never done it before either. It sounded just like something a boy from Virginia would want to do.

“S’pose so, I never thought about it.”

“Wanna do it?”

“No, I don’t think that would be very kind,” he replied, sliding back down until his head hit the ground. He rolled onto his side and blinked up at you, a crooked smile gracing his features. “I’m too tired to run anyway.”

“Mmhm,” was your defeated reply, still propped up on your elbow, hovering over him. You felt a little tired too, buzzed, slipping down until your face was right beside his. You laughed. He laughed a little too, but he also looked like a deer caught in headlights. You weren’t one for personal space, at least not with people you enjoyed being around, and you hadn’t thought that it might be pushing it for him to be so close.

“Never kissed anyone neither,” Shifty murmured after a moment. You tilted your head slightly, leaning back.

“Really?”

“I didn’t play football. I didn’t live in town. I don’t think I had a lot goin’ for me. Bad luck.”

You quirked a brow. Your heart was hammering against your chest. You weren’t supposed to being doing this with an enlisted man. You were his superior, and the reason most had objected to women in the military was for this damn reason exactly. “Why did you bring that up, Shifty?” You were just antagonizing him now.

He was silent for a moment, searching your gaze for any emotion other than drunken amusement. “Well, Y/N, I-I rightly think you’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen. I was just thinkin’ that. I’m sorry–” He broke off, rubbing the back of his neck. “I was thinkin’ I wouldn’t mind kissin’ you.”

“Well, Shifty Powers, I don’t know what those girls back in Virginia were thinking,” you chuckled, reaching to grab the fabric of his shirt. “I must do my civic duty after all, send you off to war right,” you murmur before planting one on him, gentle, careful, trying not to spook him. This was real, you reminded yourself. And it would be gone soon, so you’d best enjoy it while it lasted. He draped his arm over your waist, pulling you in close, the other hand supporting your cheek.

Shifty was a quick learner, you found, and you also discovered it would be very, very difficult to reverse what you’d done. After that night, discreet as you tried to be, he nearly gave it all away with his puppy eyes and his silent begging. And you were a sucker, running off with him to the fields and pastures whenever you could under the cover of darkness to romp, wrestle, play, and kiss a little before he and the rest of the men were dropped over Normandy.
