With a final dusting of sugar, Maddie decided that Harr's birthday cake was complete.
She never thought of herself as a great baker but her granddad had taught her a good coffee cake recipe that took advantage of whatever preserves were on hand. And since Harr loved apricots, they always had an abundance of apricot preserves during the winter months.
Breathing in to calm herself, she placed her hands around the solitary candle in the cake. Her voice was barely above a whisper, hopeful her soft volume could temper the power of the spell. She concentrated on the feeling of magic coursing through her, just like how Harr had taught her. Her hands warmed and, soon enough, there was a tiny flame dancing between her fingers. She moved her hands away and let her tiny flame settle on the candle, relieved the candle stayed lit.
Lifting the cake with both hands, Maddie backed out of the kitchen slowly.
"Harr, dear," she called out sweetly, hearing the familiar pen scratching stop and some paper shuffling on the table. Maddie turned around with a smile, seeing Harr's surprised face when he looked up at her. She was glad he was also more comfortable with taking his mask off when she was around, a sign of trust for Harr to show his blind eye and scar.
"Finished already?"
"Yes," Maddie said excitedly, "were you waiting long?"
"No," Harr said with a smile of his own, "I know you were working hard on the cake, so I waited until you were done. I'm proud of you."
"I even lit the candle on my own, see?"
He laid his hands on hers as she set the cake on the table carefully.
"You did wonderfully. Thank you."
"Be sure to make a wish on the candle before you blow it out!"
Harr laughed.
"I haven't made wishes on birthday candles since I was a kid. But, for you…"
He closed his eyes, as if he was seriously thinking about a potential birthday wish. For all Maddie knew, he probably was.
"Alright, got it."
He drew in a breath and blew out the candle, a thin trail of smoke floating in the air. Maddie clapped her hands and grinned.
"Happy birthday, Harr! I hope that your wish comes true."
To her surprise, he flushed again.
"It shouldn't take long."
With stiff motions, he took hold of her hands, looking at them as if to gather courage.
"If you would… would you sing me Happy Birthday?"
Now it was her turn to blush.
"Does… the Land of Reason have a Happy Birthday song?" he asked.
"No, we do, we do. It's just…" she paused, touching her throat, "are you sure? Singing makes me more potent. I don't wanna accidentally turn you into an old man or something."
"Then stop if you can feel your magic surging. We've already figured out that your magic doesn't affect living creatures against their will, so I’ll be fine."
He reached up and touched her cheek.
"And if something does happen, we can figure out how to fix it together. I'm always here to help you, remember?"
Maddie nodded slowly and stepped away from him. She then raised her arms and closed her eyes, preparing to sing the first note of the song.
"Wait!"
She froze, her eyes shooting open while her breath caught in her throat.
Harr was blushing again, trying his best to not look at her.
"I just… need a moment. To prepare myself... for how cute you’re going to be."
Maddie bit her lip, trying her best to hold in her laugh. Harr was being the cute one even if he didn't realize he was doing so. As much as she wanted to tell him, she knew he didn't like being called cute, so she kept the comment to herself.
He let out a slow breath and turned his eyes towards her again.
"Okay, go ahead."
Maddie smiled, closed her eyes, and began to sing.
"Happy birthday to you~ Happy birthday to you~, Happy birthday dearest Harr. Happy birthday to you~!"
When she opened her eyes again, Harr was looking away from her, his face fully red and his hand was over his mouth, clearly overwhelmed by her little performance. Maddie laughed nervously and approached him again, brushing back his hair.
"It was a little much, huh? I guess that could have gone better."
"No, it…" he paused, pulling her closer, "it was perfect. Thank you again. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday."
She kissed his forehead, letting him rest his head on her chest. "No problem, my love."
