ROTTMNT Character Fighting Style Analysis - Part 4: Donatello
Hey! I’m back with my fight-style analysis! Sorry it took so long but we’re back in business!
This is a continuation of my first post about analyzing each of the Turtles' (+April's) fighting style, their strengths and weaknesses in a fight, and how Rise uses that to highlight different aspects of their character. I highly encourage you read that first before hopping into this one for full context. There is a bit of a TL;DR at the end.

Donatello: Striker/Support
Fighting Styles:
Categorizing Donnie's fighting style in Rise was surprisingly difficult as Donnie doesn't appear to have an easily identifiable pattern the way his brothers do. However, after I watched all the fights he's in several times over I've come to quite an interesting conclusion:
Unlike his brothers, Donnie doesn't have a specific fighting style - he has two.
Parry and Counterattack
Donnie's primary fight style in the show utilizes a more traditional combat approach (or as traditional as Donnie can get), utilizing his bo in combination with his tech to battle the enemy at close range. This fighting style is an interesting fusion of offensive and defensive techniques to create a style that caters to Donnie's strengths. It involves Donnie goading the enemy into attacking him with a series of swipes and jabs, then using a number of blocks and parry techniques to defend himself until he can find or create an opportune moment to create an opening and hit his foe with a devastating counterattack. While Donnie might not be the strongest turtle physically, his tech and proficiency with his bo make him a force to be reckoned with in his own right.
Glass Cannon
Donnie's secondary method of fighting is one I would best describe as a "glass cannon" fight style. For those of you unfamiliar with it, the term 'glass cannon' comes from video games and TTRPGs and is used to describe a character that can deal a lot of damage, but has very little health and defense in return (think of wizard or ranged classes).
"But wait, ‘Glass Cannon’ describes the attributes of a character, not their fighting style,” and yes, it does. However, in Donnie’s case, his fighting style changes in such a way that he becomes a glass cannon
With this fighting style, Donnie tends to forgo the close-range, technical combat, instead more ranged attacks that rely solely on his tech. This is Donnie when he is fighting at his most offensive as these attacks can be VERY powerful and can deal a significant amount of damage, but they also leave him rather vulnerable. Donnie puts all his focus on dealing strong singular attacks, but if those fail, he ends up being more exposed to the enemy as his tech has very few defensive capabilities.
Strengths and Roles in a Fight:
Striker
Donnie is the team's striker. His role in a fight is to deal powerful, precise hits against the enemy that are intended to quickly and efficiently defeat a foe. Both of his fight styles play into this role and both his Parry-and-Counterattack and Glass Cannon method are built to deliver strong, finalizing attacks. He is often seen entering a battle after his allies instead of charging right in (although he does sometimes do that - especially early on), choosing to be a bit more precise in who he fights, or joining an ally in order to provide that finishing blow if need be. His battleshell gives Donnie an aerial advantage, allowing him to swoop in unexpectedly and strike an enemy, or boost his speed and increase the strength of his attacks. While he is seen, on occasion, fighting outside of this role, he is at his strongest when filling the Striker position.
Support
Donnie also fills the role of the team's Support and assists his brothers, April, and other members in a fight with the use of his tech (ha, get it - he's tech support). This is different than how Mikey supports the team as Mikey directly affects the enemy by disabling them, while Donnie supports the team by directly affecting those he's fighting alongside. Donnie provides numerous helpful gadgets with his tech that has a seemingly infinite number of configurations and uses in battle. His tech-bo had almost every tool under the sun and his goggles can give tactical information in a fight by pointing out weaknesses or additional information about an opponent. He also helps in moving allies around the battlefield using his hammer/tech-bo and battleshell, giving them a stronger advantage in the air and providing aerial assistance if needed. There are times when Donnie supports his allies by inhibiting the enemy, but more often than not his support is provided directly to his team.
Utility:
Donnie's Parry and Counterattack style is, arguably, his best fighting style as he can utilize his tech while fighting without being overly reliant on it. When used properly he can go up against many types of enemies and it allows him to be a bit more adaptable in a fight than he is when he is using just his tech or just traditional fighting techniques.
His Glass Cannon fighting style should not be discredited, however, as it is incredibly strong, but it is more situational than the Parry-and-Counterattack method. There are times when it is useful to have that one powerful attack that can be used to finish off an enemy to deliver an immense amount of damage, but it needs to be done in tandem with his team. When Donnie fights as a Glass Cannon by himself, he becomes incredibly vulnerable and, without anyone to back him up, puts himself at huge risk when his attack fails. Having the others nearby help weaken the enemy, making his attack more effective, or can help defend Donnie should he need it.
Donnie's fighting styles are best suited for short battles against a small number of enemies while he tends to have a hard time in long, drawn-out fights or against a large number of opponents. Donnie's strengths lie in his ability to deliver strong individual attacks, which work best when he is fighting against just a couple of enemies where he can properly focus his energy. However, the longer the fight goes on, the more Donnie begins to struggle - the longer the battle drags on, the more likely Donnie is to get hit. Despite the fact that he does very well on the defensive when using his Parry and Counterattack style, once Donnie gets hit it becomes very hard for him to recover.
Donnie's role as the Striker can conflict with his role as the Support, resulting in him often having to prioritize one over the other. If Donnie plays a more aggressive role in the fight, both his fighting styles don't give much opportunity for him to use his tech for anything but his own attacks. When Donnie needs to fall into his Support role, this means he has to significantly "back off," so to speak, so he can fully deploy and utilize his tech to help his team.
How it plays into his character:
Donnie’s fight style and roles reveal a surprising amount of information about his character, including the complexities of his personality and how his strengths and flaws are demonstrated in the way he fights.
Donnie's Glass Cannon style is the direct result of his arrogance and overconfidence in his tech. Donnie takes pride in his tech and inventions, which isn't inherently a bad thing, however, this tends to feed into Donnie's arrogance, causing him to assume that his inventions could never fail. When he does this in battle, he puts so much emphasis on his tech and his confidence in its success that he doesn't consider the possibility that the attack may not work. However, there are times when the Glass Cannon fighting style is needed, which is when Donnie has to find a balance between relying on his tech for a powerful attack and having the humility to recognize when it may not be the best option.
Donnie's Parry-and-Counterattack fighting style exemplifies how skilled Donnie can be when the best parts of his character come together. This fighting method requires Donnie to be skilled, patient, and tactical; while also demonstrating how Donnie can use his intelligence and engineering in battle without being overly reliant on it. Donnie can be rash and overeager in a fight, especially when it comes to using his tech, but when he uses his Parry-and-Counterattack style he is forced to address that in order to succeed. When Donnie uses his greatest strength, his intelligence, all of these pieces fall into place, making him a very strong fighter.
Donnie's role as a Support may not be very obvious since he tends to fight more offensively, but the way he supports his team in a fight aligns very well with how Donnie expresses his care and affection for his family. Throughout the show, Donnie repeatedly tells us that emotion and affectionate gestures are difficult for him, which could make it seem that he has little care for his family. However, this is far from the case, Rise demonstrates time and time again that Donnie deeply cares about his family, but instead of expressing it outwardly, Donnie's affection comes through in his inventions. We see several instances in the show where Donnie makes upgrades to his tech to cater to his family's needs and interests - and he does the same thing in battle. He has several gadgets specifically designed to keep his family safe, and we see how he modifies his tech to accommodate the needs of others in a fight. The love Donnie has for his family translates into every part of their lives, including battle, even when it isn't immediately obvious to anyone else.
In a Team Fight:
In a combined team effort, Donnie is the best option to go last in a team attack. Given Donnie's role as the Striker and his fighting style that is heavily geared towards singular heavy strikes, it makes sense for him to be the one to deliver that finishing blow. This is where his Glass Cannon style works best as his allies have already worn the enemy down enough to make his final, tech-heavy particularly devastating.
With the mobility and the assistance he can provide with his tech, Donnie can help set up a follow-up attack, but this means he has to take a more passive role in the fight and he doesn't get much of a chance to attack. This can be beneficial when going against weaker opponents, but less so when fighting stronger enemies.
Donnie doesn't work as well as an attacker in the early positions in a team attack as his skills as a fighter are not suited to properly set up a coordinated effort. Even though his Parry-and-Counterattack style can create an opening in the opponent's defense, it also needs a very quick attack to follow up on that, which is difficult to execute without another person nearby. Attacking first or second may also require Donnie to fight his foe for a longer period of time, which increases the chance that Donnie will get hit and won't give him the time needed to recover from it.

Donnie's analysis was definitely the most difficult one of the bunch. Whereas Leo, Raph, and Mikey all have instantly recognizable roles and fighting styles, Donnie's was much more complex. You know he's the tech guy in and out of a fight, but trying to find where he fits into battle beyond that was challenging. Interestingly enough, it mirrors how his own character is presented, where you know Donnie's general shtick early on, but it can be difficult to understand his character beyond the surface level if you don't pay attention.

[TL;DR: Donnie has two distinct fighting styles in the show - one that prioritizes close-range Parrying and Counterattack techniques and one where he prioritizes his tech and becomes a Glass Cannon. These both feed into his role as the team's Striker, where he functions best as the final attack in a team battle - while also acting as the team's Support by assisting his allies with less combative tech. His roles and fighting style are all very indicative of Donnie's overall personality and the complexities of his character.]

I am very shy and quite awkward, which results in me not being much of a talker; however, I will always try my best to be friendly to whoever wants to approach. I. BASIC.
A. This blog is: Selective / Independent / Canon Divergent / NSFW / Mutuals only / Singleship / Mostly iconless / Multiverse / AU, Crossover, OC, and Multimuse friendly / Vaguely affiliated with the OP RP fandom.
B. I am a very slow rper for many reasons —school, family, my ever-fluctuating mood —and I would appreciate it if you refrained from pestering me for replies. In return I offer as much patience as necessary.

C. English is not my mother language so I apologize in advance for any mistakes made.
D. I track the tag #iinfortunii, although mentioning me works just as fine.

I am also very aware that a lot of people have done things that can’t be excused, but I like to believe that people can change for the better. II. TRIGGERS.
A. They will be tagged as trigger tw, trigger / and trigger cw.
B. I do my best to stay up to date with my mutuals triggers. Your comfort is way more important to me than you might think, so never be hesitant to approach me via IM, (anonymous) ask or stop following me.
C. Triggers that are likely to appear, although some more than others: violence || blood || death || drugs || abuse || knives || body image || medical equipment || suggestive content || etc
D. I have no triggers, so you are free to go wild with your content. I only ask you remember to tag your nsfw (both written and visual), please.
III. INTERACTIONS.
A. Deuce won't like everyone. He might/will make wrong assumptions about your character. He will insult and bite back. He won't always be nice to those he likes. He does many things that serve his interests. You, as the mun, have no reason to take it personal, because I'm won't follow someone I don't like; if you DO take it personal however, and decide to rouse drama, then I'll be hard-blocking you. Goes for me as well —I have no reason to get angry for any of the things noted above.
B. My bonds page displays the relationships that have been built over time, not necessarily through interaction alone but over plotting as well. Refer to it for more information.
C. Interactions with OCs related to canon characters will only take place as long as said OCs have a detailed about page. Personally, I'm not interested in the idea of an OC being blood-related to my portrayal, so I apologize in advance.
D. Formatting isn’t a big thing across my blogs, save for the small text. Please don’t mix either sup/sub with small text when writing with me, as I have eyesight problems. Don’t use colored text either.
E. Non-romantic pre-established relationships are allowed! Just make sure to talk it out with me first, yeah?
01. Spade / Whitebeard pirates (canon and original characters alike that i am MUTUALS with) will have a pre-established relationship as long as the other mun is comfortable with such idea, though that relationship will be limited to merely crewmates, unless discussed otherwise.
F. You don’t need to match my writing length as long as I’m given enough to work with. If something about my reply bothers or doesn’t work with you, let me know and I’ll re-work it.
G. I really enjoy plotting scenarios or talking out about the relationships my muse could have with other muses, so hit me up if you’ve got any ideas! I’ll try to do the same!
H. Mun does not equal muse, so don’t go assuming I’m a jerk simply because Deuce is an asshole from time to time. I’m set on the idea that I’ll give people the same treatment they give me —which is always nice and kind. Kudos to everyone for this ♡
I. I don’t use a threadtracker because I rely on my memory (terrible mistake, I know), but I try to draft people’s replies as soon as I see them. If by any reason it seems like I lost it, then please let me know / send me a link with it and I’ll be deeply grateful.
J. I don’t do nor reply to greetings starters for matters of my own comfort, so I ask of you to never expect a starter or a reply from them.
IV. SHIPPING.
A. Singleship, with the spot taken by daadzi, which means Deuce is no longer open for romantic relationships.
01. Under no circumstances, I will accept more romantic relationships once the spot is taken. That being said, I won’t discourage your muse from falling for / hitting on him, although I ask you to understand he will never respond with the same interest or will never react gently if he’s pushed too far.
02. If my shipping partner is comfortable enough, I'll interact with duplicates with the condition that the relationship is strictly platonic.
B. Constant interaction, mutual interest, and chemistry are a must for the sake of better communication (both ic and ooc, preferably).
C. Please do not approach me if you wish our characters to have either a: one night stand or friends with benefits type of relationships. It won’t work out due to the nature of Deuce’s personality, and for that I apologize.
E. My ship has its own tag so you're free to block it if you don't want to see it on your dashboard. In addition, I'll also tag those posts with only the ship name for this very purpose.
F. Please do not force ships on me.
V. CELEBRATIONS.
A. First off, I am absolutely terrible at keeping up with dates, and to be frank, I am not the biggest fan of celebrating, which is why I think it’s necessary to say I won’t be partaking in any holidays, not even Deuce’s birthday (not that he has one, to begin with). Obviously I will still reply to any gifts received, and will send out things in return —you know, common courtesy.
B. I won't be sending out birthday gifts every year, and I might write drabbles for people once in a blue moon; it doesn’t mean they will be done for the specific date though, so please be patient.
VI. REASONS TO NOT FOLLOW BACK / UNFOLLOW.

She is not a real person. Her concept as Deuce’s (toxic) pseudolover is my creation and was somewhat inspired from the real life Beatrice Portinari. Do have in mind that Deuce doesn’t talk about her so your muse can’t simply approach him and ask about her unless they can go through his memories / read his mind / any capability alike or he speaks about her, though it won't take a genius to figure out that she's a product of his imagination.

She serves as a lie to shield himself from the internalized homophobia he deals with up until meeting Ace.
NOTE: As stated previously, Mun =/= muse, but I too have been dealing with compulsory heterosexuality for far too long, so I'd like to apologize in advance for projecting a bit of that into my portrayal. I'll work so that this part makes sense with what we've been given from Ace's novel.
VIII. MISCELLANEOUS.
A. I will never force people to follow me, so if by any reason you have to unfollow/block me, please go ahead. Your comfort matters and have every right to do what you must to ensure your wellbeing. With that said, I will not tolerate and will immediately hard block if you try to police my content.
B. I do not follow back immediately, and it can take me from a few hours to several days to follow back. Do not take it personally if I choose not to.
C. If I follow it’s because I am interested in interacting. I only ask you to be patient because it might take me a while to gather the courage to send something to your inbox or talk to you.

Shows With Good LGBT+ Rep
Now for starters, I’ll admit that I do not watch Riverdale. I tried it, didn’t like it, that’s basically it. The show does have LGBT rep (but not ace rep), I would never dismiss that, but they make sure to do the bare minimum. Based off the people I follow who are fans, scenes for the characters, more specifically Chonie (Cheryl x Toni), are either constantly deleted or they are nonexistent.
They have romantic scenes together but not nearly as many as the rest of the leading cast. This matters because one of the girl in the relationship, Cheryl, is advertised as a main, but yet she’s treated as a side character, and Toni is given even less. From what I’ve heard of the show, they dedicate an immense amount of time to the pairings of the main characters, but this focus does not seem to apply to Cheryl and her relationship with Toni. This applies to them as individual characters and as a pairing, as I’ve heard that neither character get much screen time.
I understand wanting representation and I understand wanting to support representation, but the point that I’m trying to make is that Riverdale is not the show to put your desire and need into because they will never give the proper treatment or storylines that these characters and relationships they deserve. You can still watch but just know that there are shows out there with much better rep. So I’m here today, writing this long essay that no one asked for, to inform you guys of LGBT+ rep that actually gets treated well by their writers and is given the screentime and love they deserve.
Warning: Some of these shows have been cancelled. If they do not say they’ve been cancelled, then that either means the show is still going or that it ended on it’s own terms.
Also this list does not include shows with the bury your gays trope.
Feel free to add on! This list is mainly comprised of some of my favorites. I tried to very best on the descriptions but I am a tired student with little free time.
#1: The Bold Type ~ Kat x Adena
Kat Edison, the head of the social media department of Scarlet magazine, meets Adena El-Amin, a proud Muslim lesbian photographer in episode one. The two bond and grow closer and closer, eventually causing the “out and proud hetero” Kat to question her sexuality and acknowledge her romantic feelings for Adena. Adena, as I said earlier, is a lesbian and Kat is bisexual.
#2: Black Lightning ~ Anissa x Grace
Ah, the first black lesbian superhero! The second season is currently airing on Tuesday’s at 9pm on the CW. Being the daughter of the infamous vigilante Black Lighting has it’s unexpected perks, like having superpowers! The intelligent activist Anissa Pierce discovers her powers of super strength and decides to use them for good and defend her city under the name of Thunder.
Grace Choi was in a few episodes of season one, but her relationship status as girlfriends with Anissa in the comics assures us that she will be coming back and we will see her and Anissa’s relationship develop further.
#3: Doctor Who ~ Bill x Heather
Throughout all of time and space, these two manage to come back to each other. After being split up by an alien in ‘Pilot’, Heather comes back to Bill’s rescue in the season finale, kissing her and making her immortal, leaving the both of them to travel across the universe together. Their journey has sadly come to an end in the series, but it came to a spectacular and happy one!
#4: BBC Class ~ Charlie x Matteusz
Part of the Doctor Who universe comes Class, a teenage sci-fi drama that takes place in Shoreditch. Now, first I should say that this is one of my favorite shows and you don’t need to watch Doctor Who in order to watch it. It is its own separate show.
Charlie Smith, an alien prince from the planet Rhodia, comes to earth to escape the Shadowkin, the monsters that killed his race. Him and the only other survivor of his planet, Miss Quill, come to earth and are instructed by the Doctor to hide themselves as human. Charlie attends Coal Hill Academy while Quill teaches.
Once prom comes around, Charlie asks the Polish boy, Matteusz, to be his date. The prom is hijacked by the Shadowkin and it is revealed to Matteusz that Charlie is an alien, but he doesn’t mind because it does not change the way he feels about him. The two continue to date throughout the series whilst fighting off aliens with four of their friends and Miss Quill
This show has been cancelled, but audios have been made since then to fill in the gaps between episodes and there is a chance there might be more! Also there are three books!
#5: In The Flesh ~ Kieren x Simon
The dead have come back to life! Kieren and Simon are both PDS sufferers, meaning they have partially deceased syndrome, meaning that they died and were brought back to life. Series 1 is centered on Kieren Walker, a 18 year old boy who died back in 2009, who is adjusting to his new zombie life and dealing with the people who want him back in the ground.
In series 2, Simon is introduced as a part of an PDS activist who is fighting for equal treatment for PDS sufferers while trying to find the first risen to bring on the second rising. Connected by a mutual friend, Simon and Kieren are introduced to each other, and the two strike up a relationship which develops into something romantic.
#6: Faking It ~ Multiple Characters
In an attempt to gain popularity, Karma and Amy fake being lesbians, but after a kiss at the school’s prep rally, Amy realizes that she isn’t as straight as she thought she was. In fact, she is head over heels in love with her childhood best friend, Karma. She confides in the out and proud Shane about her feelings for Karma and asks for advice on how to get a girlfriend. This show, while not always perfect, is incredibly diverse. Amy is bisexual, Shane is gay, Lauren is intersex, and in season 3, Shane forms a crush on the new student, Noah, and after their first kiss Noah comes out as trans to Shane.
The show was unfortunately cancelled after three seasons, leaving much of the story still left unsaid, but the show still has an enjoyable and satisfying ending, even if it wasn’t the ending the creator wanted. The creator’s ideal ending, had he been given the chance to write it, was that Karma would eventually realize that she herself is bisexual too.
#7: Hit The Floor ~Multiple Characters
Jude x Zero
Junior sports agent Jude Kinkade brings basketball sports star Zero to LA on the promise to be a star. One night in a limo before Zero flies to an away game, Jude, to his surprise, kisses Zero. When Zero comes back, the two begin a friends with benefits relationship that develops into something deeper, and the two fall in love.
Lionel x Eve
Lionel’s sexuality has never been explicitly stated in the show. She had sex with many men and the majority of viewers assumed she was straight. That was until the cunning Eve came in. The two decide after a brief meeting to go and get drinks together which ends up with them having sex. Later, Lionel admits to Jude, that she has slept with many women before Eve. Their relationship is complicated and it’s much different from the other relationships on the show.
Jude x Noah
Due to the show’s unexpected renewal and switch from VH1 to BET, not all actors returned. Adam Senn (Zero) did not want to return, but never fear, because the show’s creator wasn’t about to let the beautiful Jude Kinkade go to waste!
A year after his break up with Zero, Jude’s best friend Lionel takes him out for drinks in the hopes to find him a hunk and get him laid. Later that night, Jude and Noah meet, hook up, and move on with their lives. Until the next day when Jude sees Noah at the Devils arena and finds out that the two will be working together.
Hit The Floor has not been renewed or cancelled.
#8: Wynonna Earp ~ Multiple Characters
Waverly x Nicole
i’m sure many of you have heard of these two, but incase you haven’t, let me introduce you to Waverly and Nicole! Waverly, the younger sister to the Earp heir, and Nicole, a sheriff at the Purgatory police department, strike up a romantic relationship after Waverly ends things with her shitty boyfriend Champ. These two are so cute and are head over heels in love with each other.
Jeremy x Robin
Jeremy is introduced in season 2 and Robin is introduced in season 3. After discovering a murder tree, Robin goes to the police station in search of help. Directed to Jeremy, Robin explains everything he saw, then the two go on a date to investigate the murder tree, and after that the two become boyfriends.
Warning: The show, while amazing with LGBT characters, does not treat their POC characters well.
#11: Brooklyn Nine-Nine ~ Holt and Rosa
Raymond Holt is captain of the 99th precinct. He is married to his longtime partner Kevin, who often guest stars on the show, and the two of them are truly iconic. Holt has fought hard for gay rights in the police department since joined the force. As a out gay black man, Holt had to fight and work hard to get to his position as captain.
Rosa Diaz is bisexual and she is played by a bisexual actress. Rosa is a secretive, hard, ruthless, and a soft bean of a character. She is one of the key characters to the Nine-Nine. She has yet to have a steady girlfriend but here’s to hoping that she will have one next season!
#10: BBC Cuffs ~ Multiple Characters
Jake x Simon
Don’t sleep with the enemy. New PC Officer, Jake Vickers, joins the police force and meets the well known and disliked solicitor, Simon Reddington. Despite the fact that they are on opposing sides that hate each other, the two begin dating. They try to keep their professional life out of their relationship to avoid conflict. But alas, that’s where the sweet angst comes in.
Donna x Alison
The time these two start dating it unclear, but when the show begins it is said that they’ve been together for a few years. They’ve been living happily together for quite some time. Donna is part of the main cast as a police officer and is given a lot of screen time in action. Alison is a side character who makes a few appearances throughout the show but her interactions with Donna are sweet, beautiful, and realistic.
This show has been cancelled.
#11: Shadowhunters ~ Magnus x Alec
Ghaad, these two are the best. A gay shadowhunter and a bisexual warlock fall in love. Malec has good communication. Magnus and Alec have their own storyline and a storyline with each other, making them both equally important and have intimate/emotional scenes. The show also makes sure to tackle harmful bisexual stereotypes. (Thanks to @spicychipsdemon for helping me write this one.)
This show has been cancelled but it’s being given a special to wrap up the story.
#12: Superstore ~ Mateo x Jeff
An employee and district manager meet at the Cloud 9 store during a strike. Mateo is a out gay man and so is Jeff, the thing is that his cannot date the employees at the store so the two of them keep their relationship private from the other coworkers, because they would not be able to keep it a secret from Jeff’s boss. These two are actually really cute and they’re hilarious and underrated to be quite honest.
#15: Orphan Black ~ Multiple Characters
Besides the white girl dreads, these two are nice. They are the sci-fi couple that beat the shit out of the bury your gays trope. A clone and a woman who is assigned to look after that clone, uncoincidentally meet. What starts as an assignment is developed into something much deeper, leading Delphine to realize she’s bisexual. These two are happily living their life making crazy science with each other.
There are more LGBT characters in the show. There is a trans clone but unfortunately he is only in one episode. One of the main clones, Sarah is revealed to be bisexual in s4 and her foster brother Felix, a series regular, is gay.
#16: Picnic at Hanging Rock ~ Multiple Characters
Three schoolgirls and their governesses mysteriously disappear on Valentines Day in 1900 at the infamous Hanging Rock. This show, while slow in some areas, transformed the 1967 book written by Joan Lindsay. What was initially about the disappearance of three girls and the attempt to find them was changed into a six part series about the repression of sexuality and expression of young girls. Miranda, Irma, and Marion, are the three young women that go missing, and they are all lesbians. There are two more characters in the story: Mike and Albert. They had a close relationship in the book but the tv show made their relationship canonically romantic.
The show does suffer in the sense that hetero couples that barely existed in the book get more screen time and make out sessions than they should. I included this show because character wise it’s so drastic from it’s original content and it ends up putting wayyyy more focus on the girls than the book did. It turned a simple plot into a meaningful story about gender roles and sexuality and three girls trying to break free of them and two boys falling in love and running away together. Not a perfect show, but damn if it didn’t do some things right. Still recommend.
This show is a miniseries. Unlike other series, it ends where the book ends.
#17: One Day At A Time ~ Elena x Syd
If you haven’t watched these two then I don’t know wtf you’re doing. This show is precious and they are precious and god just watch it already honestly. Elena is a lesbian and Syd is a non-binary lesbian. Once a criminal breaks loose and the two have to cancel their plans to go to comic con, the two are trapped in their home with the rest of their family. As the evening builds up, Elena finally gets the courage to kiss Syd.
#18: Crashing ~ Sam x Fred
This show and this relationship is f*cking wild and it’s amazing. The show surrounds a group of people who are guardians to an abandoned hospital and they live in it. Sam meets Fred on his birthday when the two are paired up for a scavenger hunt. They relationship is odd at first with Sam constantly flirting with Fred and blatantly ignoring his feelings for him. These feelings rise to the surface and force Sam to confront them when Fred gets a rich bf who wants them to move in together.
This show has been cancelled. The show does not end with a cliffhanger. The show does end with Sam finally leaning in a kissing Fred.
#19: Charmed (2018) ~ Mel x Niko
Now this show is only one episode in so who knows where this show and relationship will go but it’s off to a good start with having the Mel and Nico relationship as the only romantic relationship in the show so far. I did not pay attention to the advertising of this show but as far as I know the show kept this relationship under wraps as a happy surprise for it’s premiere. The pilot has it’s flaws but it is cute, and to me personally, it works for me better than the original. These two have been dating for a while. Nico is a detective while Mel is just finding out months after her mothers death that she is a witch. A lot is going on. The pilot was interesting enough to get me to continue. The sisters are amazing and I hope the writers keep this relationship up front. This show not only has a lesbian relationship as it’s main love story right now but the three sisters are all women of color.
This show and the actresses have been facing a lot of racist backlash so any support to ensure a future seasons be amazing!
#20: The Halcyon ~ Toby x Adil

Honestly f*ck BBC for cancelling so many good shows with LGBT characters. The Halcyon is a tv show that takes place during the 1940′s. Now, unlike many other periodic shows, this one is diverse, including poc and gay characters in the cast and giving them good storylines. The Halycon hotel is own by the Hamilton family, and Toby is the youngest son. Adil is a bartender in the hotel lobby. One night, while Toby is hiding from a woman his mother had set him up with, he runs into Adil who then kisses him. The two the next day begin a relationship.
As I mentioned before, this show was cancelled.

* ✦ ❜ unpopular opinion. ━━━ accepting.
settle yourself into a comfortable seat with some hot pipping tea because I’m finally going to let my opinions on komahina loose! JFFDGHFJ idk if any of this flowed together nicely or if it even made sense, but I hope it does/did!
let’s start start off with how most of the fandom interprets them right off the bat and let me say that komahina isn’t a toxic/abusive ship, shocking I know. that’s not to say they are a perfect ship either, both hinata and komaeda have their issues, amongst themselves and each other. that being said, most relationships have issues! it isn’t uncommon to have different stand points + opinions on things or even to disagree with your partner, in fact it’s health to have those things in a relationship. it’s even healthier to have conversations about those types of things with your partner. people have said this plenty of times and by this point it’s like beating a dead horse, but communication is key to any good/healthy relationship whether it’s romantic or platonic! and as much as I adore the ship, they both rarely communicated to each other––– properly at least, which is understandable! they both are in a very intense situation and environment during the killing games, and that isn’t exactly the right time to be thinking about romance of all things.
speaking of the killing game, there’s also an added factor that hinata felt betrayed by komaeda because he influenced the start of it ( I say “influenced” because while yes, he did lead teruteru into the mindset of killing, but teruteru was the one himself that did the killing. that’s a rant for a different day ) and that’s completely understandable too! hinata’s feelings of betrayal are completely valid, because what komaeda did was wrong even if in his mind he thought it was the right thing to do. I think it’s generally known that hinata felt betrayed by komaeda in chapter one by everyone, however you have to have have truth/faith in a person for the feeling of betrayal to exists. in the prologue hinata did trust komaeda, komaeda was the first friend he made on the island + the only person who waited for him to wake up! obviously hinata had to have felt a strong connection with komaeda in order to feel hurt by what he did in chapter one. after that chapter though everyone seems to have this mentality that hinata hates komaeda, but that’s far from the truth. what hinata felt was fear–– he feared what komaeda would do around others and by himself, and while that isn’t the most positive emotion to have about someone, being afraid doesn’t equal hatred by any means. because while he does fear komaeda, there’s also a sense that he wants to understand him and his reasonings, and i’m no expert on how relationships work but you don’t just want to learn/understand someone you hate––– let alone “justify” things they did if you hate them. and what I mean by justify is that, if you choose to spend time with komaeda, in the last fte it’s obvious hinata was willing to forgive him for what he did. forgiving doesn’t mean he’ll simply forget what happened, forgiving komaeda would mean he understands his mindset of why he did such a thing––– understands why luck and hope hold so much value to him, and is willing accept those parts of him even if they’re wrong and possibly help him grow from it. komaeda however takes all the things he said back, because he didn’t want hinata to forgive him.
which transitions into me wanting to talk about komaeda, he doesn’t believe he deserves forgiveness for anything he’s ever done because that’s just how low he thinks of himself. that being said, some parts of the fandom thinks komaeda was lying about his condition + all the things that happened in his life, and even hinata believes he’s lying because of how fast komaeda backtracked into saying he read it in a book, but that isn’t the case. komaeda isn’t a liar but any means, he isn’t malicious or evil or manipulative. komaeda doesn’t lie, and I think the liars disease was used to execute that in a way, because excluding the things he said under the influence of the liars disease, everything komaeda says he believes in wholeheartedly––––– it’s just how his thought process works and it’s caused by his condition & all the trauma he went through. but even if komaeda isn’t a liar, he isn’t very good at communication. he doesn’t have prior experience to how relationships work, therefore wouldn’t know how to react or respond properly to hinata reaching out for him. komaeda also lacks empathy due to his frontotemporal dementia, preventing him to (obviously) empathize and understand hinata or where he’s coming from. so, the fact that both lack the ability to understand each other is a huge communication barrier for both males, but that doesn’t make the relationship abusive in any way! it’s just something they have to overcome and can with time & patients with each other + proper communication!
I know this point is going to be brought up as well so I have to talk about it, but in chapter 5 komaeda treats hinata like shit and I’m in no way saying it’s right, but komaeda felt betrayed by hinata as well after finding out he was just a reserve course student. what added the fuel to the fire too is finding out all his classmates where remnants of despair, which caused him to treat them all like garbage and worsened his treatment towards hinata. by that point, he had no one he was able to put his faith in then, which set into motions his plan.
now I’m unsure if any of this is cohesive, but basically what I’m trying to say that the ship isn’t toxic. hinata doesn’t hate komaeda, komaeda isn’t manipulating hinata at any point in the game ( in fact, komaeda states he never wants to make others uncomfortable / do something uncomfortable ) but I digress. the boys can work it out and have a proper friendship and can even date given the proper care. their dynamic is super interesting regardless if you ship them romantically or platonically or see it as one sided, and it’s such a shame that any relationship between two characters that seem to clash sometimes is labeled as abusive.

Delayed FanFic Friday: Mission on Mimban 6 of 12
Previous Installments
Introduction, One, Two, Three, Four, Five,
What Happens in the Chapter
We have made it to Chapter Six. This novel only has twelve chapters, so normally I'd say we would find the midpoint (the centerpiece of your entire story which must feature a revelation that gives your protagonist new insight into the plot and allows him to shift from the reaction of the first half of the story and into action in the second half How to Structure Your Story's Outline (How to Outline for NaNoWriMo Pt. 7)) in this chapter. But pacing has been dragging, so I make no promises of finding it here.
Luke and Leia are escorted to the maximum security holding cell by a subofficer and some stormtroopers. Luke takes the time before reaching the cell to complain about the Empire being too cheap to build a proper headquarters. Leia picks up on that, and gets offended that this building was a temple turned into offices and a prison. They're shoved into the cell with angled bars "as big around as Luke forearm" and the Imperials leave, laughing at their trepidation. The piles of fur wake up. Leia is frightened of the huge creature that stands up, but Luke is more surprised and greets the Yuzzem in what he knows of their language. Hin and Kee are delighted to make friends with a human who understands them. They had gotten themselves roped into Imperial enslavement and ended up on Mimban, protested their treatment, and only got documents waved in their faces and jokes made of them. So they got drunk, took the equipment, and started filling in the mine. Grammel didn't have them shot because they each do the work of three men and they were drunk.
Grammel comes down with several stormtroopers, visibly relieved that the Yuzzem have not torn Luke and Leia apart. If everyone is getting along, there's no reason to move them out of the safest cell they have. Grammel lets slip that an Imperial Governor has taken an interest in them, and Leia has a panic attack from her experience on the Death Star. Grammel recognizes that she has undergone Imperial interrogation before, but Luke won't tell them who they really are. Grammel pitches a fit and threatens Leia, and Kee grabs Grammel by the throat. He takes a stun blast to the side which scorches his fur and Hin attacks the bars when he can't reach Grammel. Unfortunately, the bars hold. Grammel insults the Yuzzem while he speaks to Luke. Hin hocks a well-aimed loogie and it hits Grammel on the back of the neck.
Hin comes back to Luke and Leia after Grammel leaves. Leia fainted from the fear of going through interrogation again. She comes to and apologizes for losing control. Luke promises she won't undergo another session. Food comes through a hole in the stone walls rather than the barred door. After eating, Luke finally takes a look around with a mind of how to break the hell out. The cell entry control is a "recessed photo-sensitive switch" down the corridor out of arms-reach of everyone in the cell. Once Luke decides that's the weak point of the security system, Halla confirms it from the cell window.
Once they have caught up on what Grammel now knows and Hin and Kee have offered to get them out of the building if Halla breaks them out of the cell, Halla uses the Force to levitate one of the food trays to cover the switch. She can't make it all the way and implores Luke to help her. He does and Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice gives him pointers. They get the cell door open, Hin and Kee take off with Leia nearly right behind them, while Luke gets directions on where to meet the droids and Halla once they're outside. Leia drags Luke out of the cell, and then they have to stop rampaging Yuzzem. They get weapons, Kee destroys the communications center, Hin presents Luke with his lightsaber, and they finally bolt for the main entrance.
What I Liked
I'm not pleased with Leia getting indignant over the misuse of architecture and not indignant over the abuse of the Mimbanites, but it leads to a great dig at an Imperial.
"I am told this mining is an expensive venture. The Empire is smart enough to save where it is able," he concluded with pride.
"That probably extends to your pay and retirement benefits," the Princess ventured maliciously.
Yes, I must find a way to keep that in. Despite the Rebels having no room to talk about using abandoned temples as headquarters.
I adore Hin and Kee's drunken plan to get back at the Imperials, fill in the mine. It had no chance and they were stopped, but it has symmetry. It also makes me think these two are actually younger than Luke and Leia, teenagers for their species rather than young adults.
Halla is a bad-ass. To get back in touch with her new partners, she stood "on a ledge about ten centimeters wide, over a forty-meter-deep trench" after passing a barrier that "would detect any energy weapons or explosives". We're not told how high up the ziggurat the window is.
The narration does not tell us the voice speaking to Luke is Ben, but really who else could it be?
Luke shut his own eyes and tried to concentrate only on the tray, ignoring the cell, the Princess, everything but that floating flat plane of formed metal. A familiar voice seemed to remind him of something.
"Don't try so hard, Luke," the voice said. "Remember how I taught you. Relax, relax, let the Force work through you. Don't try to force the Force."
That voice is not coming from Halla; she's too busy concentrating on the tray. And I would think you'd need some awareness of the surroundings in order to successfully levitate an object. This won't do them any good if the tray goes against the wall and doesn't cover the photo-sensor cell.
Leia closes the bars again and slips the tray back inside to make any of the stormtroopers following them nervous over what they are capable of.
"Decommissioned troopers" is a euphemism for dead stormtroopers. I don't know why they thought that was better, since the phrase comes up after Luke and Leia catch up to the Yuzzem and find Hin using a droid as a club to beat a soldier to a pulp and both were "coming apart at roughly the same rate."
What I Found Problematic
Subofficer is not given a rank, so I'm assuming he gets a snazzy Imperial uniform and not stormtrooper armor like the chatty sergeant of the last two chapters (who is also referred to as a noncom which means a noncommissioned officer). I don't see why we had to change characters here or why his rank isn't given. Thirteen pages later we learn the subofficer's name is Puddra. Maybe he is in charge of the prison? That makes sense, but why didn't we get his name when he was introduced?
I admit it's probably due to the current political climate and journalists being too feckless to actually name what things are, but I find myself with no patience for weasley words chosen by Foster or put in the mouths of the characters. "They signed themselves into--well, I guess you couldn't call it slavery, but indentured servitude is too polite a term." NAME WHAT IT IS! Both of these terms have definitions and differences. Commit to what happened to these characters. That the Imperials lied to them is a given, both of these option (or option number three) are equally horrific and worth revolting over when the Imperials are the ones in power, so make a damn decision and say what it is! And if someone in Editorial is kicking a fuss about slavery in this book, this isn't the way to have it but not have it too. You are not fooling anyone, Foster.
The trained diplomat is frightened by tall, furry aliens. I could accept that the trained diplomat is nervous and really wants the protocol droid that knows over six million forms of communication present now to help her with a species she doesn't know. I'm having a harder time with the fear from Princess Leia "Will someone get this walking carpet out of my way?" Organa, Senator of Alderaan.
We have a brief moment of regret for the choices they have made on this planet.
"If we hadn't lost control of ourselves back in front of the tavern, we wouldn't have attracted the attention of those miners. We wouldn't be here now. It's my fault."
He put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Come on, Leia... Princess. This mess was nobody's fault. Besides, it's fun losing control once in a while."
No, no, no, no, no. This mess is equally BOTH your faults for being idiots on an IMPERIAL CONTROLLED WORLD. Leia was immature by kicking Luke into the mud, Luke was equally immature pulling her into the mud, and you both have bounties on your heads. Yes, you should take some time to reflect just how badly you screwed up then and how badly you are screwing up NOW. What the hell are you doing dropping titles and Rebellion affiliations where the cell security can pick it up?!
"You grinning travesty of a man." That is a weak-ass insult, Grammel. I expected better of an Imperial who just threatened to dismember the woman that Governor Essada was interested in. The Yuzzem are not men.
How does Hin recognize the lightsaber as Luke's? Does it carry Luke's scent? Luke hasn't called himself a Jedi as far as we know.
What Changes in My Fic
Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Alien Species by Ann Margaret Lewis had a better reason for Luke knowing Yuzz: a Yuzzem lived in Anchorhead and Luke made friends with him. This is the backstory reason I'm going with rather than "I studied a lot of worlds back on Tatooine" reason Foster came up with.
Hin and Kee's backstory won't change much except I'm going with option three: alien trafficking. These two Yuzzem kids were approached and promised a well paying job, a chance to send credits back home which probably isn't doing so great under Imperial rule. Then they get to Mimban and they are paid, but everything is being docked from their paychecks. The flight to Mimban, their return flight home whenever they fulfill their contract, food, lodging, any equipment they break because it's designed for humans not Yuzzem until there is nothing left to save. They are free to leave once their contract is fulfilled or they pay to get out of it. Hah, hah, you can't pay. There you go, exploitation without slavery.
I have to decide on Puddra's rank, but I'm making him the ranking officer over the prisoners like a warden.
Overall, the prison break is decent, if a bit talky in spots. My problem is there would be less for Halla to do because Luke and Mara both are in training and levitating the tray should occur to them without outside prompting. Also, I'm not sure this qualifies as the midpoint but I'm putting it there unless a later scene makes a more compelling case.

Gotham Rogues Profile #1: Dr. Jonathan Ulysses Crane AKA The Scarecrow
The first part of a rather long series of profiles, both because I wanted to write them out and also because they were requested by @the-mighty-sorceress, @spacetabbi, @hugsforvillains, @michi0no, and @perfunctoryusernamecreation . I hope you guys like it.
CATEGORY#1: BASIC STATS
Gender: Male
Grammatical Gender (Masculine, Feminine, Androgynous, etc.): Masculine with a very heavy tint of femininity. His upbringing and appearance had an innate femininity imprinted on him.
Age: 27-30
Race, ethnicity, culture: Mixed race, half Irish, half Native American of the Crow tribe. Though he was officially made a member of his father’s tribe in his early teens, much of the culture he ascribes to is that of Gotham and the Deep South. He speaks Crow and attends tribal celebrations when he has the time and isn’t in Arkham.
Height: 6’3”
Body type: tall, long, and wiry. There’s not much fat to him and while he has muscle, it’s mostly lean
Appearance: Jon is very pretty, in that his features and appearance are rather feminine and doll-like. There are small “off” things about his features. When he’s neutral or tired he looks fine, but his expressions can look quite daunting, especially his smile. He has a gap between his two front teeth.
Jon’s hair is a mop of black curls, a trait he gets from his mother. In his early years, it was cut rather short and managed, but a lack of care has turned it messy and untamed.
If there’s a defining, terrifying feature of Jon, it’s his eyes, they’re icy blue and piercing, it almost looks like he knows more than he’s been told.
Jon’s skin is copper, you can definitely see his native heritage in his skin color.
Jon has multiple tattoos, the most prominent being a tree growing from a heart on his back, a spade on his left forearm, and a bird behind his right ear. Others include an octopus over his navel, a cursive note under his collarbone (Reads “Jasper-Maximillian-Zachariah”, the other three boys groomed by his third abuser), and a cross on the side of his right hand. His childhood has left his body a web of scars, many of which are hidden by tattoos.
Where is he from? Jon was born and raised in a small Southern town in Georgia called Arlen, where he lived until he was 11 when his great-grandmother died. Afterwards, he was placed with his father in Columbia, South Carolina. He was placed in a mental facility in Columbia when he was 14 after suffering a severe nervous breakdown, but was released at 16, and moved to Gotham to attend Gotham University.
CATEGORY #2: RELATIONSHIPS
Family: Jonathan’s first known family was his great-grandmother, Mary Keeny. Mary was the product of a very prestigious Southern family and hated her great-grandson, an illegitimate, mixed-race boy. Mary severely abused her great-grandson until her death when he was 11.
Jonathan’s mother, Karen, is largely uninterested in either of her children, especially not Jon. Her treatment of him is mostly disgust and fear. Jon greatly resembles his mother.
Jon’s father Gerald was the one to take him in after Mary’s death. Though he cared for his son, he was extremely controlling and protective of Jon, not allowing him enough space. He also ignored that Jon began suffering from bipolar disorder until Jon had a nervous breakdown at 14. Gerald is currently in prison for child abuse.
Jon has a single half-sister, Adriane Jarvis, who was taken from Karen by their grandmother. Adriane has a relatively healthy relationship with Jonathan, though it is slightly damaged by their large age gap (Adriane is 10) and Jon’s mental illness.
Jon’s maternal grandmother, Marion Keeny, is the closest thing teenage Jon ever had to a maternal figure. She and Jonathan have the closest relationship of anyone on his maternal side.
Lyndon Keeny is Jonathan’s great-great-uncle, Mary Keeny’s “wayward” brother. He and Jon seldom meet face to face because he lives in Europe, but their relationship is healthy enough that they keep in touch.
Jon’s paternal grandfather, Chayton, is the closest thing Jon has to a proper father figure. He was Jon’s major teacher when it came to learning about Crow culture and language.
Jon’s paternal grandmother, Ruth, is the closest Jon will probably ever get to a proper grandmother. She’s protective of him but nurturing. She isn’t controlling and loves cooking for her very thin grandson. She also has a concealed firearm and has 100% threatened Batman with it.
Friends: Jon’s closest friend is Harley Quinn, they’ve known each other since college and even dated for two years (and then again later while both were dating the Joker). Their relationship is casual, comfortable, and full of very bad puns, sarcasm, inside jokes (Peach Pie Moonshine is a phrase that will send them both into a laughing fit), and dirty humor.
Jon grew up with Charlie McIntyre and Hartley Rathaway, both are rather close friends and Jon and Hartley briefly dated when both were teenagers. Jon visits both regularly.
Jon’s closest male friends are Jervis Tetch, Edward Nygma, and Maxwell Mavis. The three pull regular heists together and Jon has had an on-off romantic relationship with Edward.
Jon’s tensest friendship is with Pamela Isley. The two became friends in college, and even then, were a little at odds. Pamela’s opinions strain their relationship on occasion, as does Jon’s relationship with Harley, especially before Pamela and Harley begin dating. While not jealous of Jon, Pamela is a little sour that Jon didn’t defend Harley enough while dating Joker.
The three other boys abused with Jon by Hugo Strange, Jasper Curtis (6 years younger), Maximillian Zeus (2 years younger), and Zachariah Bloom (4 years younger), are all still friends with him, they’ve formed a brotherly relationship. Jon, being the eldest, watches all three carefully and does his best to make sure they don’t get hurt or in any danger.
Jon drinks regularly with Waylon Jones and Leonard Snart, he’s also slept with both.
Jon has become good friends with Timothy Drake, but the relationship has become more brotherlike than anything else. Much of the relationship is Jon keeping Tim from drinking coffee concoctions to stay awake.
Jason Todd has befriended Jon because Jon saved his life at least four times, probably more.
Bane, Angelo Sanchez, has formed a tense sort of friendship with Jonathan while trying to get clean. Bane refers to Jon alternately as lobo, meaning wolf, or mestizo, referring to Jon’s mixed heritage. Jon also works for his cartel regularly.
Jon and Selina became friends early in Jon’s criminal career, they’re still rather close.
CATEGORY #3: THE SEXY STUFF
Sexual orientation: Pansexual
What is he attracted to?: Jon has relatively variable preferences, but in general he’s very focused on eyes, he loves them. Despite his ridiculous height he is extremely attracted to people who are taller than him. Being shorter clearly isn’t a dealbreaker though. One of the more interesting notes is that Jon prefers submissive men and dominant women. He is rather attracted to any kind of intelligence, be it emotional, logical, etc., and likes small traits like, for instance, Edward listing riddles when he’s nervous. Jon also enjoys people who have a sense of humor.
Sexual experience: While Jon’s initial sexual experience was negative, Jon is very comfortable, perhaps a little too comfortable, with sex. Jon has had multiple sexual partners of all genders.
Romantic experience: Jon has had a number of romantic relationships alongside sexual partners. His most prominent and long lasting being with Harley and Edward. Jon’s romantic experience can be a bit trying though, he has a hard time trusting people because of his past.
CATEGORY #4: SKILLS
Skills: Jon is extremely intelligent and intuitive, being able to read people and situations very easily. He’s skilled at mimicking voices both speaking and singing, can play violin and piano, and is multilingual (speaks French, Latin, Ancient Greek, Crow, and ASL). Despite being unable to shoot a handgun, Jon has two civilian sharpshooting medals for his ability to shoot a hunting rifle. He’s also skilled with most knives and, while not strong or disciplined enough to hold his own against a trained opponent, knows enough to overpower larger or stronger opponents in a fight (provided said opponent does not have any other considerable advantage, Jon can’t beat someone who can literally break his arm by biting it), both skills were taught to him by Bane and Selina. Jon is largely immune to most toxins due to extensive fear toxin testing on himself and regularly being close proximity to Pamela Isley. As an added note, Jon is hypermobile, making him unusually flexible.
Occupation/schooling: Jon has a PhD in psychology gained at 25 (equaling out to 9 years of schooling). He also has a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. Before becoming a major criminal in Gotham he taught psychology at Gotham University, also acting as a consultant for the GCPD. Despite regularly being incarcerated at Arkham Mental Facilities, he also consults there as a patient.
Hobbies: Reading is Jon’s main hobby, though he’s obsessed with fear and often studies it whenever he can, he’s fond of cooking, particularly baking, and loves horror and slasher films, Jon also loves playing the violin.
CATEGORY #5: PERSONALITY & CHARACTER
Introvert or extrovert? Definite introvert, though he can occasionally come off as extroverted from his mannerisms.
Strengths: Jonathan is intuitive and has a strong sense of empathy, he can easily connect to people and their emotional state (the problem is he doesn’t give two shits about either, unrelated to the empathy part), and also has a good skill in using both to his advantage. Jon can come off as misleading, he feigns sympathy well and is skilled at playing the manipulator, making him excellent at drawing people in. He’s also learned how to use his looks as a draw (basically how to use sex appeal as a weapon) and has cultivated this as a strength. That said, when he comes across a person he cares about, he’ll happily lay his life down for them and is a very loving, while a touch overprotective, friend.
Weaknesses: Jon is reckless, often putting his life in danger for thrills or fun. He can also be very cruel and vindictive. His lack of sympathy and high empathy makes him a very skilled and calculating manipulator, but makes him less good at being trustworthy or kind to strangers. Jon also lacks much trust in others, being quick to withdraw his trust if it’s broken. Jon’s near-obsession with control can make him erratic if things aren’t going his way. Jon also drinks heavily, barely sleeps, and eats sporadically.
Goals/dreams/aspirations: Jonathan’s goal, above all others, is to be able to push past fear, to not be afraid of anything.
Beliefs/affiliations: Jonathan was raised Catholic by his great-grandmother, who was very radical and practiced flagellation. Jonathan was taught this form of religion, but the flagellation was ended with his father, and the nurses at the Columbia Mental Hospital taught Jonathan a much gentler form of Catholicism to help him cope with his bipolar disorder. Jonathan is still a practicing Catholic.
Beyond his religion, Jonathan values heavily independence and honesty, as well as loyalty. While he is rather cruel, he has a very high opinion of people who are kind regardless of their circumstances (Jon has a massive amount of respect for Becky Albright for both her kindness and adherence to his other values).
Fears: Jonathan has already confronted many of his fears in the past. His most principle fear is losing his sovereignty and free will. He’s been exploited, abused, and groomed by a man whose motives were extremely disturbing and never wants to go back to that time again. He reacts very poorly when people attempt to manipulate him and has been known to stab people who touch him without asking.
Jonathan also fears getting attached to people, mainly because soon after befriending Pamela she was abused by Woodrue.
Insecurities: Though Jonathan is relatively attractive and is aware of this, he is insecure about many aspects of it. His feminine and often unsettling features were a source of ridicule for him as a child, and he was often the subject of cruel teasing over his resemblance to a doll and his unnerving features, as well as his mixed heritage.
He heavily underestimates his own ability to handle situations, often making him easy to pass over.
What would he die for? People he cares deeply about like Harley, his family (even members he hates like his parents), abuse victims.

Applying FMA’s Philosophy to Real Life
Here’s something a little different from what I usually post! For some reason I found myself thinking about this in the shower for almost an hour today, so I thought I’d write a post on it. (Also, keep in mind I wrote all of this spontaneously in one go.)
Now, here’s a little disclaimer: This is very subjective. There are a thousand different ways to personally interpret the philosophy of FMA, and even different ways to interpret what “the philosophy of FMA” even is- Is it the overall themes of the story? The actual real life alchemical/philosophical concepts mentioned in the series? The politics of the FMA world? Arakawa’s outlook on life and writing manga? Some sort of weird deep subtext about the Philosopher’s Stone or something?
It all depends on how you want to look at things, and everyone and their mom has a different interpretation. Every anime analysis blogger or YouTuber has done something on the philosophy of FMA. But I wanted to do something a little different: Take the philosophical concepts within the FMA universe, and find positive ways to interpret them that you can apply to your own life to better yourself.
Like I said, there’s a thousand different ways of interpreting these concepts. But I’m an optimist, or at least I try to be, so I tried to choose interpretations that are positive and motivating. I think Dante’s already got the whole “pessimistic existential despair” thing covered.
So, without further ado, here we go! This is an extremely long post, so it’s under a cut. Feel free to skim it and only look at the parts that interest you.
Concept: A lesson without pain is meaningless.
Interpretation: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Sometimes the most difficult challenges are the most rewarding.
“Teachings that do not speak of pain have no meaning, because humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return.” -Chapter 1: The Two Alchemists
“A lesson without pain is meaningless, because gaining anything worthwhile requires sacrifice. But if you can overcome that pain and achieve your goal, you can achieve a fullmetal heart, and that’s irreplaceable.” -Chapter 108: Journey’s End
It’s very easy to have a negative interpretation of this phrase, to take it to mean that suffering is necessary. As another favorite anime character of mine once said, “People never learn from their mistakes until they are hurt from them.” But like I said, I want this to be an uplifting list, so we’re going with a happier intepretation.
Everything is a learning experience. You can’t get a diamond without subjecting carbon to immense pressure and high temperatures, right? Even when things seem dark, if you can power through, you’ll come out with experience and strength that others might not have. And even if you can’t win, as any scientist knows, failure can show you where you went wrong and what you need to do to improve. There’s an old proverb in the go (east Asian strategy board game) community: “Lose your first 100 games as quickly as possible.”
This is what really got me started on this tangent, thinking about... believe it or not... Alchemical encoding methods. (Oh, on a side note, does anyone know the proper usage of “alchemical” vs. “alchemic”? Please let me know. It’s been driving me up the wall for years.) Think about it: Alchemists encode their work so they can’t be read by those who aren’t worthy, right? It’s fairly likely that there’s a standard system of alchemical encoding in the FMA world; We’ve heard Ed and Al mention real alchemy concepts like the green lion, or the sun and the moon as masculinity and femininity- things that wouldn’t make sense to a non-alchemist, but are probably standard knowledge for most alchemists. There’s also that mural from Xerxes, which Ed was easily able to understand, because certain symbols and phrases are known to have certain meanings in alchemy.
Encoding systems like this would really only be useful for keeping out non-alchemists and novices, but any skilled alchemist would probably be able to understand them. Because of this, it would probably only be used for fairly benign things. But if you look at things like Marcoh’s notes on the Philosopher’s Stone, or Scar’s brother’s research, those are the really big ones. There’s layers upon layers of coding there that require a ton of skill, time, teamwork, and in Scarbro’s case, knowledge of alchemy across multiple cultures and languages. That’s some intense stuff, but incredibly important. Of course the most rewarding alchemical secrets are the most well guarded.
Challenge yourself. Challenges can often be scary, difficult, and stressful, but sometimes the harder it is, the bigger the reward.
Concept: All is One, One is All.
Interpretation: Everything is connected. You are part of a greater flow, and you are not alone.

“Maybe it’s ‘the world’, maybe it’s ‘the universe’... Life is a complex cycle, so vast that we can’t see it with our own eyes. But whatever it’s called, you and I are only a tiny part of the great flow. One part of the whole. But all those individual parts come together so that the whole can exist. And the cycle keeps flowing because all of nature follows this fundamental law. Understanding that flow, deconstructing and then reconstrucing... That’s the meaning of alchemy.” -Ed, chapter 22: The Masked Man
Nothing exists in a vacuum. Everything has impact on something, no matter how small. A huge number of factors came together to create the you that is here now, and in turn, your existence affects the lives of others. Even if it seems like you’re alone, like nobody loves you or pays attention to you, you’re not invisible and you’re not alone.
Maybe you’re someone’s favorite blogger, or maybe someone passed you on the street and thought your hair was beautiful. Maybe you own a shelter pet that would have been otherwise put down, or maybe you helped introduce someone to something that changed their life for the better. Maybe you buy a coffee from Starbucks every week, and your purchase contributes a little to the overall income of that particular Starbucks, which allows it to stay open, thus keeping a single mom employed and able to feed her kids. It’s impossible to exist without having an impact on others. The way each little person operates as part of the great web of humanity to make the world what it is today is part of what makes humanity so beautiful.
You’re never truly alone, no matter how much it feels like it, and there’s always someone who would suffer in some way without you. Try to make meaningful connections. If you ever feel like you’re alone in this world, take some time to think about what things you do that affect others, and how you are connected to the world as a whole.
Concept: The energy of the world is cyclical, and only flows in one direction.
Interpretation: What you do comes back to you. Be mindful of the attitude you choose to put into the world.
“The foundation of alchemy is the power of the circle. The circle dictates the flow of power, and when the proper runes are written within it, it is possible for the power to be released. Even when you’re not using alchemy, the flow of power has many practical applications! For example... If you can read your opponent’s movements, you can turn them back against him. That’s one way of manipulating energy. Accepting the flow, understanding it, and using it to create... That’s what makes an alchemist an alchemist.” -Izumi, chapter 23: Knocking on Heaven’s Door
Due to some spiritual experiences I’ve had in the past, I very much believe that likes attract likes, and that the energy you put out into the world will come back to you. But you don’t have to be even the least bit spiritual or religious to see how this can sometimes be true.
If you snap at someone for no reason, even if that person was in a good mood, that’s going to discourage them from being nice to you. If you’re a generally mean, angry, nasty person, people just aren’t going to like you. But if you gain a reputation for being nice and treating others with respect, that’s going to earn you respect as well.
I’m not saying you have to be cheerful all the time- everyone has their bad days, and plenty of people (myself included) might naturally be a bit more Raven than Starfire. I’m not even saying you always have to be nice to everybody, because there will always be people who aren’t worthy of your respect. What I am saying is that you have control over how you generally interact with others, and it pays to be nice rather than mean. Things like keeping a generally polite attitude, saying nice things to others, and helping people when they need it are things that people will remember, and make them more likely to want to be nice to you as well.
If you find yourself in a situation where you can choose whether or not to be mean, take a minute to think to yourself: Does this person really deserve this treatment? What will this accomplish? How will this affect how others see me? If you can choose whether or not to be unnecessarily mean, I encourage you to not be mean.
Concept: You cannot gain without sacrifice. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost.
Intepretation: Change doesn’t happen on its own. If you want something to happen, you must first take steps to make it happen yourself.

Again, it’s easy to interpret this as a negative, “We all must suffer” thing, or as a (50-year-old conservative voice) “If you’re poor it’s just because you’re a lazy bum and blah blah blah” thing, but this is the positive interpretation I’ve come up with.
Nothing ever happens without some sort of catalyst. You have to take the initiative. Like Ed once taught Rose, no matter how religious you are, you can’t just sit around praying and expect all your problems to magically be solved; You have to at least make some effort yourself. Does this mean hard work will always be rewarded the way you want? No. Sadly, this is an unfortunate reality of the world. But it does mean that nothing will happen if you don’t try.
For example, I see a lot of people say, “I wish I could draw.” ...And then that’s it. They just say that, over and over. Guess what? Literally nobody is stopping you from drawing! You have to be the one to pick up the pencil/pen/tablet/paintbrush/mouse etc. and start drawing. No, your first drawing will not be perfect, and it may take a very long time before you’re able to draw something that you can really be proud of. But you’ll definitely never be able to make a great drawing if you never start drawing in the first place.
If you have a goal, and you’re already doing what you can to work towards that goal, even if “what you can do” is next to nothing: That’s great! I’m proud of you for trying, and I hope you can achieve your goal. But if you’re constantly sitting around lamenting how you wish for such-and-such without actually doing anything to try to make it happen... Well, you’re not really going to get anywhere.
Concept: There’s no such thing as “no such thing”.
Interpretation: Don’t underestimate yourself. Never give up on something just because others don’t believe in you.

People can accomplish amazing things. I’m sure you’ve all heard the stories of how Harry Potter was written on napkins in a bar and rejected by like 2872193 different publishers or whatever, or how much Vincent van Gogh struggled both in life and art, or how Dav Pilkey wrote Captain Underpants while sitting out in the hall in grade school as a punishment from teachers who told him being a cartoonist isn’t a real career. Even against impossible odds, sometimes with enough determination, you can come out on top.
It’s easy to get bogged down by negativity. If your goal is somewhat out there, you may get a lot of people telling you that you can’t do it, but that’s not necessarily true. In a similar vein to the previous topic, you may never be able to accomplish your goal- life just happens that way sometimes- but there’s always a change that you might. If you let others discourage you to the point of giving up, you’ll definitely never be able to achieve your goal.
Believe in yourself, BELIEVE IN THE ME THAT BELIEVES IN YOU!!!, and keep trying. Don’t give up just because things are looking grim, or because other people say you’ll never be able to do it. They don’t know what you’re capable of.
Concept: A king without his people is no king at all.
Interpretation: Life is collaborative. Don’t neglect those who support you.

You can’t do everything on your own. People move through life by interacting and helping one another. It’s ok to ask for help sometimes. But at the same time, you have to be ready to give help when the time comes- If someone does things for you, and you turn your back on them when they need you, what kind of person does that make you? Not a very nice one.
Of course, that’s not to say that you have to be giving and giving and giving all the time. If you don’t have the money, time, skills, knowledge, physical ability, or emotional/mental availability to help someone, that’s ok. It happens. But if you can help someone, and choose not to just because you don’t want to make the effort, that’s selfish. Why would you do that to someone who helped you? Who, in turn, will help them? And when people see that you weren’t there for them when you could have been, again, that’s going to come back to you. Nobody wants to help someone who takes without giving.
Also, if you’re in a leadership position, your job is to lead. It is your responsibility to keep an eye on the needs of those below you, and to make sure the system runs smoothly. If you treat your subordinates like garbage, they’re not going to want to respect you.
If you do treat your subordinates well, and help others when they need it, people will look up to you and be more likely to return the favor when you need it.
Be a Colonel Mustang, not a Brigadier General Fessler.
Concept: Take 10, give 11.
Interpretation: It doesn’t always take much to be kind. You can do nice things sometimes without expecting something in return.
“My brother and I met so many wonderful people on our journey, people like Mr. Hughes. I’ve come to realize how much happiness they brought us, even if we didn’t see it at the time. That’s why I feel that now it’s our turn to try and give back some of that happiness. If we receive ten and only give back ten, then it’s a zero-sum gain. Instead, if we receive ten we will add our one to it, and give eleven in return.” -Al, chapter 108: Journey’s End
You don’t always need a specific motivation to be nice. Being kind for kindness’ sake is always a good thing to do, and doesn’t necessarily have any negative payoff. A lot of the time, doing something nice for someone can take as little effort as just saying, “You look nice today”, or even- as Arakawa herself has said she believes to be important- just saying thank you when someone does something for you, no matter how small.
If you’re grateful to have someone in your life, show it! Be nice to them. You don’t even have to give a heartfelt speech; sending people posts you think might interest them, for example, can really make them happy. Also, if you see someone who’s feeling down- or even someone who’s perfectly fine- it never hurts to show them a little kindness. Your small compliment may wind up meaning far more to them than you think.
One way I personally try to spread a little kindness: When I see art on my dash, unless I have some particular reason not to want it on my blog (bad pairing, too sexual, etc.), I reblog it. Even if it’s really terrible art, I reblog it anyway, because I know how much it can mean to beginner artists to have just a little bit of encouragement. I also usually try to gush in the tags about how much I love it, or add specific compliments, like “This is a really cool art style” or “I like how you draw his hair”.
Most of the time, I don’t get anything out of this, and I don’t expect or need to. But every once in a while, someone will message me saying how much my comment meant to them, and that’s a really wonderful thing. Also, whenever I leave a comment on a fanfiction, I always end it with a simple, “Thank you for writing this”. The other day, someone said the same thing on one of my fics, and I was shocked. People so rarely show such simple, straightforward appreciation for the amount of work writing takes, and it really made me happy to read.
Anyway, that’s all! I hope you guys enjoyed this spur-of-the-moment little pep talk, I hope it gave you something to think about, and I hope it might be of some help to some of you. And remember: It’s not hard to be nice!

Aspects of the Self: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Over this last month, if there’s anything I’ve taken away from our rather in-depth class-wide examination of the concept of bildungsroman and how it forms the backbone of works like Mariko Tamaki’s “Skim”, it’s that the influence of external forces on transitional periods in young adult lives shapes everyone a little differently. However, the emotional upheaval such forces put us through often comes into conflict with our identities, calling who we are and what we stand for into question so much that it results in we ourselves needing to reestablish a more permanent sense of identity altogether. Sometimes though, this type of conflict can constitute a rift between how we carry ourselves in the public eye verses the private eye depending on the kinds of impressions we want to give off so that others may see us in a certain way. A lot of this is true for the character of Skim as it is for so many of us, she herself is trying to figure what kind of person she is to the point where there is a rift that was brought to my attention very clearly during group presentations between how Skim acts around others verses when she’s alone, yet her public and private selves always feed into each other. This got me thinking: if Skim’s goal as well as the audiences’ is to take stock of who she is based on how and why she carries herself at different times, then what is it we learn about Skim from her diary entries (the main manifestations of her private self) compared to her conversations with other characters (the main manifestations of her public self) and how do both sides serve to paint a picture of Skim’s true identity at its core?
It’s a bit ironic that the entire story of “Skim” is told from the main protagonist’s point of view mostly by way of her diary entries because most people who’ve never read it before would probably take this to mean that Skim is giving the audience a first-hand account of all the turmoil that’s befallen her life along with her reaction to it. Me = serious issues” (Tamaki and Tamaki 10). From this and other snippets of her diary, whether paired down by shorthand or not, it’s easy to gather that Skim is feeling depressed, angry, even confused about all these sudden changes that’ve soaked up all the attention in her life and are putting a damper on who she is. The irony? Even though the whole point of having a diary in the first place is to be able to have something to bare your soul to without fear of being judged by anyone else for the way you think and feel, Skim writes about what she’s feeling but keeps vague as to the reasons why. It’s almost as if the character herself was aware that the diary would be published and read by millions in real life so here she is making a last-ditch effort to save face!
In all seriousness, Skim in a sense really is trying to save face through the act of ”self-censoring”, as put so eloquently by Margaret Lang in our first group presentation. Much of this can be cited in the comparatively detailed commentary Skim makes that is laced with more overtly irrational cynicism than usual - think of when the whole school is hung up over John Reddear’s death and Skim is treated by Mrs. Hornet and Julie Peters as a premature suicide statistic just by virtue of being associated with goth culture, to which she wrote this in response: “Truthfully, I am always a little depressed but that is because I am sixteen and everyone is stupid (ha-ha-ha). I doubt it has anything to do with being a goth” (Tamaki and Tamaki 22). Additionally, there are many times throughout the story when Skim writes a complete thought that would give everyone, including herself, some proper insight as to why she feels the way she does if it wasn’t, say, followed by a question mark or delayed with an ellipsis: “Things That Make Me Sad - Love. Things That Make Me Happy - “Love?” (Tamaki and Tamaki 67). Perhaps most striking though, are the thoughts that Skim crosses out (as Luke Langton called particular attention to in the second group presentation) and sometimes replaces with other deliberately less direct comments which at best reveal half-truths in place of whole truths: “I didn’t know what to write. Because...I’m not sure. I didn’t know what other people would think about my answer. It’s a stupid question” (Tamaki and Tamaki 61).
All the above examples to me suggest that Skim not only has trouble being honest with herself, but is also afraid of offering any outright explanations as to why she’s been so depressed, even in her diary. This is because doing so might make her appear too vulnerable on top of already being unsure of who she is as an individual. Consider Skim’s pentacle, a doodle of a star that shows up quite a few times throughout the book. We see it drawn twice on Skim’s list of things that she still needs for her altar, Skim paints a tiny star on her face (but washes it off) right before the Wiccan AA meeting, there’s even a pentacle drawn on Skim’s cast. We find out towards the end of the story through a conversation Skim has with Katie Matthews that the pentacle is meant to protect her from “everything” but “It’s mostly just symbolic” (Tamaki and Tamaki 109). I think the pentacle has held more significance to Skim than she’s actually letting on at this point. It’s shown up enough times that I can’t help but deduce it is meant to be a safeguard, a way for Skim to protect herself against obstacles she’s having a hard time overcoming or things she’s feeling uneasy about (like a casted right arm and the strange Wiccan meeting). This is especially important because up until the end of the book, anything having to do with Wicca, as the star does, is a huge part of the new identity we see Skim trying to forge for herself. It’s only after Skim talks to Katie about it and later signs her cast with a pentacle “for good luck” does the star take on a meaning for Skim that really is just symbolic and nothing more, since by then, Skim has grown confident enough in herself that she no longer needs Wicca or the star doodles to feel validated.
But while we’re on the topic of conversation, I notice a correlation between the most positive and negative interactions Skim has with other characters at the beginning of the book and the diary entries that are written about them after the fact. When Skim tries to speak her mind towards her “friend” Lisa, she is often shut down and insulted for it. In those situations, the best thing Skim can do to vent her frustration is insult Lisa back. Not surprisingly, these scenes in themselves tend to make it even more clear as to why Skim feels so dejected whenever she’s with Lisa than the diary entries do. The ramifications of such a relationship where Skim is almost never allowed to get a word in edgewise (and when she does, Lisa verbally abuses her for it) center around a lack of confidence Skim has in her ability to channel her thoughts towards other people and herself simply due to the fact that Lisa has never given Skim the option to do otherwise. However, Skim’s first meaningful conversation with Ms. Archer really puts things into perspective for the audience, as not only is she the first character in the story to let Skim speak freely without any fear of a hostile response, but she also asks why the students call the central protagonist “Skim” when her real name is “Kim”, to which the latter answers: “Because I’m not” (Tamaki and Tamaki 27). This little exchange here conveys by far the most important thing we ever learn about Skim as a person throughout the entire story - she does not think of herself as a light or superficial individual, (as two separate dictionary definitions of the term seem to allude). I dare say, that serves to make her nickname quite a contradiction to what I would claim the character of Skim is really like in spite of the confidence lapse she has to wrestle with for so long in public and private!
Yes, Skim most certainly is quite the introspective and layered character. Thus the climactic pay-off of when she is finally able to express herself, (effectively giving the GCL members a piece of her mind in defense of Katie and John Reddear without any care as to what will come of it afterwards) is made so much sweeter. Though please do not take this to mean there’s a great discrepancy between the Skim we get to know while writing diary entries and the Skim we get to know while interacting with others. Skim’s fear of appearing weak in the eyes of herself and of those around her was always present until we saw her get past that fear at the end of the story by standing her ground against unfair treatment instead of just blowing it off in the first respect, and by slowly becoming a lot more truthful and censoring less as she writes in the second respect. Neither of these public and private sides of Skim are any more in line with who she truly is by themselves because, to put it simply, you can’t fully understand one side without the other.

Tonight, I watched M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film Split. The watch was mostly because I was obligated to go see a movie for a certain allotted time, and this was the only non-true horror movie available, and, because I am a rather large pissbaby, I do not watch horror movies anywhere except the safety of my own living room. The watch was also in part skepticism. A part of me questioned the idea that Shyamalan was going to really go through with this premise. He had, after all, had dramatic reveals that completely changed the dynamic of a story. The Village comes to mind. The other skeptical part also assumed that he would, and wanted, if only a little, to add another critique, if everyone justified fear proved completely founded, to the body of voices decrying the work for what it is: Typical.
Horror as a genre has been, since its inception in old oral traditions about wolves lying in wait beyond the campfire to stories of highway men who would kidnap teenagers who were less than chaste to now the audacity of minorities to exist in society in such an unhidden manner, about punishment, reward, and, above all else, control. As such, this film is painfully typical. Except for being a technically impressive feature (the color work, the framing, the audio, the acting, etc.—but this is nothing that has not been achieved by other films, and so it cannot redeem the work alone or perhaps even at all), it has done nothing to set it apart from the body of films that make up the horror genre.
That stated, I justify this claim with my three major critiques of the film: poor handling of mental illness, violence against women, and (minor in time, but articulated prominently during which) racism. However, I’ll handle these in reverse order of how central I feel they are to the flaws of the film.
Due only to how little the only non-white people of the film were featured—Marcia and one sanctuary staff member whose name I cannot even recall—do I choose this as furthest from the central message of this movie. These two characters are essentially, each, a personification of the two most “benign” stereotypes for black people to exist as: a sexualized yet not idealized woman and a buffoonish, lazy man. Marcia exists in this movie only to act as an example; from her assault by one of Kevin’s alters to her being viewed merely as a corpse to foreshadow the fate of her best friend, Marcia’s actions revolve around her relation to her white, blonde best friend. The first scene we see of the girls in their captive room shows her pulling down her skirt. She’s also later removed of her skirt, left to run around in a crop top shirt and her panties. She never even attempts to cover up, contrasting with Claire who, when removed of her skirt, attempts to cover up her bra clad chest. Marcia’s death is also glossed over quickly while we’re left to linger on the death of Claire. She does not even act without suggestion from Claire and the second time she acts it is supposed to be a sharp contrast to not obeying Casey, which causes Marcia pain. The second character, the black staff member, is featured only as a voice who is so inept and incapable that even after a long, drawn out conversation where he must be convinced that he is speaking to Casey, who is regularly on the news as a missing person, and then simply lets the incident drop after she stops responding to him, and, again, later, upon realizing who he was speaking to on the radio once another staff member discovers her. He is, in so many words, useless. Again, for being featured so little in the movie, both character’s treatment paints a very unflattering image of the movie’s message about non-white peoples.
With the issue of race covered, let us turn to issues of misogyny. Four fifths of the main cast of this movie were girls/a woman, and, yet, not one of them could even pass the Bechel test! Disregarding that, perhaps that the excuse that the horror movie focuses on the actions of Kevin and not these women’s individual lives (more on that later), the movie overwhelmingly slut shames all while throwing on an unwanted expression of sexuality onto these women, all with overwhelming violence! The violence against women goes without saying, as every victim of Kevin is a girl or a woman. This is despite the fact that we are shown Kevin after he escapes the scene of the crimes and is shown patching himself up. He also encounters other men on his return home and, yet, does not interact with them! While this could be waved off as an influence of Kevin’s pedophilic, girl preference alter, the film does not discuss this and the decision to make Kevin’s therapist a woman rather than a man cannot simply be coincidence because of this. Kevin is, in fact, later in the movie rendered impervious to their attacks! An unstoppable man having his way with an old woman and three girls. But, moving on from violence to the movie’s horrific Madonna-Whore complex, we have to address the two remaining girls. Marcia has already been addressed, but it is clear both she and Claire are the intended Whores in this incident. Casey is the Madonna. Casey dresses conservatively and is withdrawn. She concerns herself with her thoughts and considers her actions wisely. Marcia and Claire are worldly and dress in a revealing manner. They are not as wise as Claire and can only think of the comforts of home while they are distressed. Yet, all of the girls have sexualization thrust upon them. Even Casey, the Madonna, does not escape from it. She is depicted as a victim of childhood molestation, at the very least, and is heavily traumatized from it. All of the girls are stripped by their captor, who is explicitly said to have an alter that enjoys watching young girls dance. It is only the difference in the treatment of their sexualization which sets them apart, but none of it comes from their own autonomy. Marcia is gazed upon even as she’s clothed, a clear case of fetishization. Clair is stripped, as well, but the focus remains on her top half, viewing her as breasts and womanly rather than just her buttock, genitalia, and as a source of satisfaction. While neither are better than the other, both are a telling commentary on the two girl’s different treatment due to race. Finally, Marcia, being the Madonna, cannot express outward sexualization. Furthermore, it is inappropriate for Kevin to directly assault her because the movie continues to try to paint him as sympathetic as a part of the probable attempt to pass this off as representative entertainment. Instead, a worse character is introduced to touch Marcia and we are shown her in the middle of a clearly upsetting flashback in a decidedly prone position. When she is also stripped down to her undershirt, her exposure is twofold; her trauma, which she tried so hard to hide, is revealed, as is her body, which she probably also equally dislikes showing for connected reasons.
Finally, the movie is not at all empowering for anyone with mental illness. The movie’s narrative reduces both mentally ill character’s personhood down to their mental illness and gives so much of their existence and their existing at all to their abusers. They do not exist as people who have been abused and have overcome; they are victims who continue to languish in their abuser’s wrath. And, while this is a reality some victims of abuse live with, no one who has experienced abuse wants that to be all they are. The movie ends with no hope for happiness for either of them, either. Kevin had, from the moment the film had him kidnap the girls, no more options. He would be institutionalized, if the arrest were to go well, but more likely killed. If the movie’s twist were unendingly true, if the beast alter were truly unstoppable, this damns Kevin to never recovering, again, another existence no mentally ill person truly wishes to exist with. People living with DID themselves have said that their mental illness brings them no power or joy; it makes them sad and their lives more difficult. All of Kevin’s options for happiness have been removed from him; he only has isolation or death awaiting him. In this same manner, Casey has only been pushed further into relying on herself. She could not tell the police, who had just rescued her from one abuser who only released her when he found he had gotten what he wanted from her (suffering), back to another. The only people who had reached out to her are dead. If she receives proper help and support, she can lead a happy life, but the movie’s ending doesn’t empower her. She could not escape Kevin and she is not shown to have escaped her uncle.
With all of this considered, I repeat my premise that this movie is typical. How long have horror movies demonized the mentally ill? How long have horror movies punished women? How long have horror movies sought to ignore or hide minority groups? This movie merely continues in that. And, worst of all, the supposed twist is not at all a twist when you consider this! It is merely the consummation of a moral majority’s myth, that the other is actually dangerous, the wet dream-nightmare of a populace that is eagerly awaiting validation of their vehement insistence that those they claim are dangerous actually are.

Since Octavio's mom has seen the video, it is a weird way that she does not try and defend Esperanza.
