why waiting on a miracle is one of my favorite (and one of the most underrated) encanto songs:
Tumblr media
So this song in my humble opinion is one of the most under appreciated songs from the movie so I’m here to give it some appreciation! (Also the irony of the song being about being ignored and overlooked and that’s exactly what happened)
So waiting on a miracle is the classic “disney I want song” but to me this song is so much more than that. One thing that sticks out to me immediately is the fact unlike most I want songs, mirabel isn’t singing about wanting more than she already has shes singing about something she lacks but SHOULD have already. From the title most people gathered that she wants a magical gift like the rest of her family and whilst that is true I find it profound that it’s not the magic for the sake of magic she wants. It’s the appreciation from her family. All she wants is to contribute and fit in and she feels the only way she can do that is if she gets a gift. It’s also important to note unlike most I want songs mirabel doesn’t get *exactly* what she wants at the end which she mentions is a miracle. She does however end up getting her ultimate goal which is the acceptance and she doesn’t need a miracle to do that. Also with the title being “waiting on a miracle” a miracle is rare it’s thought to be something almost impossible or not even real. So for mirabels I want song to be about this shows that even she herself is aware it’s literally an impossible ask but she’s just dreaming of the possibilities if she got something as rare as a miracle.
I also found the instrumental quite genius as some have already pointed out all the madrigal songs are in 4/4 time… except this one. Waiting on a miracle is in 3/4 time as yet another subtle way to show she’s out of place. as lin manuel himself said “she’s literally out of beat with the rest of her family” so thanks for that lin the song was already sad enough but you just had to do that👍
also congratulations to mirabel for being one of the few disney characters to actually say when they aren’t ok “I’m not fineeee” I know that seems minuscule but it’s so refreshing to hear a character actually express that they are feeling negative emotions and it’s ok to express that. Especially since bottling up emotions is so common nowadays it’s a good message for the next generation <3
also waiting on a miracle kinda sorta predicts the whole movie? “I would move the mountains, make new trees and flowers grow” “I would heal whats broken show this family something new” she ended up achieving all of that in the movie’ 1. The mountains split when the house was collapsing. 2. She helped isabela discover what else she could do thus making new trees and flowers grow. 3. She basically healed the entire family which is what was broken and she showed them all they are enough without gifts! So that’s just a nice little bit of foreshadowing.
Ok now back to the sad stuff! in the lyric “I would heal whats broken” turns out she’s not referring to the entire family but herself. She views herself as broken because she didn’t get a gift and she wants to fix herself 💔 another lyric to note is “cant keep down the unspoken invisible pain” a lot of people talk about how inconsiderate the madrigals are towards mirabel but the thing is they don’t realize how it effects her. We know she can put on a hell of an act (see family madrigal song) and she herself refers to her pain as “invisible” she’s hiding it from everyone so they don’t realize how badly she’s hurting because she puts on the whole optimistic act. So another way the movie demonstrates the communication issues within the family.
And how can I forget mirabel literally telling herself at the beginning “dont be upset or mad at all” she’s quite literally telling herself to not feel those things that she’s “totally fine” I also love the fact the music is in the tune of “the family madrigal” up until she says “I’m not fine” I just thought that was a cool detail!
I’ve seen people complain about “open your eyes” x3 because it doesn’t get any louder or higher it just stays the same. Well there’s actually a reason for that! the song is called waiting on a miracle, mirabel is stuck in that position. She’s stuck waiting. It’s also important to note that the visual of her begging to her abuela to “open her eyes” and not being noticed implies that she’s been trying for a long time to be noticed but she keeps being stuck.
Also shoutout to Stephanie beatriz for the amazing acting because I could FEEL the emotion and the passion. and yes I know it’s because she’s in labour but I also believe even if she wasn’t in labour the song would still sound emotional as stephanie is a really great actress! I believe in an interview she stated she wanted to perform this song like it’s the first time mirabel is expressing these feelings to herself. Basically yeah that’s true she had been lying to herself for a decade and finally she decides to admit to herself she’s not fine she’s not happy and she wants a change. The voice crack on “I’m not fine” is actually heartbreaking and this is the moment her facade breaks entirely, and I love the vocal cry she does on “longing to shine like all of you shine” it’s just these little vocal details that add so much to the song and make it so powerful
I’ve also seen people complaining this song isn’t “belty” enough but it’s just not that type of song! mirabel is stuck in her position and if you notice in a lot of Disney movies once it reaches the climax of the i want song the protagonist comes to a decision of sorts. Take “how far I’ll go for example” she decides she’s going to sail beyond the reef and the music climaxes, she also has the triumphant high note at the end. Waiting on a miracle unlike how far I’ll go is NOT a triumphant song. The music does climax but only to emphasize mirabels false hope as she’s saying all the things she would do.
with the high note I firmly believe that there’s only one significant high note at the end for a particular reason. Like I said above usually high notes in Disney songs symbolize achievement or a sense of strength found. Mirabels high note has the opposite effect. She’s quite literally begging for a miracle in desperation only to realize she’s wishing for a fantasy. “Am I too late for a miracle” is the line the song ends on and the visual is important here too. We see the fireworks fade away and mirabel is left standing alone in the dark because it was all in her mind. (Looking at you “mirabels gift is time stopping” theorists)
So yeah I find this song to be quite unique and raw for an I want song and I think the “vent” aspect of it is what makes me appreciate it even more. It’s not sugar coated. To quote stephanie beatriz herself: “real, human, imperfect, yearning to belong and hoping for something beyond what she sees in herself: an expression of hope and fear, all wrapped in teen angst.”
Tumblr media
So uh go stream waiting on a miracle because it’s a great song 👍(also yes this rant is a mess I’m terrible at articulating my feelings on songs but it’s also just for fun I’m like not a professional lmao)

practically perfect in every way part 2
hotch x fem!reader
Part 1:
Part 3:
Part 4:
AN: alrighty y’all I still have no fetching clue what I’m doing I just have many thoughts and need to get them out. Perhaps it’s time I learn to proofread lol. This part is a liiiitle suggestive if you squint lol
Jack is 6 at the beginning of this bc I feel like it, and Haley is dead. rip. Hotch is around 40ish, reader is 25-26ish.
summary: Aaron Hotchner is looking for a nanny for his son. As luck would have it, the perfect candidate finds her way into their home and into Aaron’s head and heart.
/ / /
“Alright dude, we have soccer in 20 minutes, so I need you to clean up the legos.” Y/n hollered up the stairs of the Hotchner house.
“Can I have 5 more minutes please?” Jack yelled.
“5 more minutes is fine, but I’m setting a timer on my phone and when it goes off I’ll come help you clean up.” y/n replied.
“Okay!!”
He watched as y/n set the timer on her phone and walked to the kitchen, getting together the snacks and water bottles for Jack’s soccer team. Since Jack was so young and it was only recreational soccer it wasn’t very competitive (or very serious for that matter, Aaron had watched Jack shove dandelions in his shin guards and sit on the field rather than chase after the ball some games) it wasn’t the most high stress environment, but Aaron loved coaching him, even if it was just him practically herding the kids towards the right goal.
It was an added bonus that y/n had played soccer in high school and acted as his co-coach (and took his place when he was gone for cases), since she was great at hyping up their little team.
Any time he got to spend with y/n was an added bonus in Aaron’s opinion. She’d been with them for six months now, and she was the perfect nanny for Jack. She was fun and light and happy, but she wasn’t afraid to help Jack learn when he did something wrong and to discipline him if needed. She found ways to help him get out of his shell and be social, something that wasn’t always easy for Jack since he was on the shy side.
She was understanding of Aaron’s schedule and always kept him updated with pictures of Jack or a text with the rundown of their day. She made fun of his perpetual scowl and called him a grouch when he was too serious, but knew when to be gentle when a case was particularly bad.
The timer on y/n’s phone went off and Aaron braced himself for the whining he was sure was coming. Jack had been very independent as of late, and had disliked any kind of instructions or “bossing around” from his dad, especially when it came time to put away the legos.
He watched y/n walk up the stairs and heard her say to Jack “Alright friend, 5 minutes is up. Do you want to put away the legos quietly or do you want me to play some music and we can try and get it done before the song is over?”
“Can we listen to Encanto?” He heard Jack ask.
“Encanto sounds good! We just have to have all the legos put away AND have your soccer uniform on before the song ends, okay?”
“Okay!”
As We Don’t Talk About Bruno played from upstairs, Aaron sat on the couch in nothing less but complete shock. No whining? None? How on earth did she do it?
A short song later Y/n and Jack came down the stairs, Jack in his soccer uniform and ready to rumble.
“Hey! Ready to go?” Y/n asked.
Aaron hadn’t moved from the couch and was still in his suit.
“I’m - Sorry I lost track of time, I’ll change and then we can go.” He replied, sitting up from the couch.
After changing into jeans and a t-shirt, they made their way to the car. Jack, feeling a little impatient, tried to hustle him along. As y/n buckled him into the car Jack turned to the trunk where Aaron was putting the snacks and water bottles for the team and remarked indignantly, “Come on, dad, you're making us late!”
“Jack,” He heard y/n say. Directing her voice to the trunk, she said to Aaron, “We're good on time, Hotch, don't worry about it. If anyone is making us late it's the guy who changed his socks 4 different times. Be nice to your dad, dude." she gestured to Jack's feet, where two mismatched socks (one blue polka dots and the other plain purple) peaked out from his shin guards.
Jack shrugged. "I'm pretty sure they're lucky. Had to make sure they were the right ones."
Aaron got into the driver seat as y/n slid in the passenger side. “Since when do you call me Hotch?”
“Is that okay?” She laughed slightly,  “I know I’ve only been working for you for like six months, but ‘Mr. Hotchner’ makes me feel like I’m reporting to the principal's office and since you’re my boss I feel weird calling you Aaron. Hotch seemed like neutral ground.”
He laughed at that too. Starting the car, he backed out of the driveway. “Oh-yeah that’s fine. My team calls me Hotch, so I was wondering if you picked it up from them.” He replied.
“Oh. I didn’t know that. Great minds think alike then.”
He smiled, to himself mostly.
“Daddy can I call you Hotch?” Jack piped up from the backseat.
“No buddy, but if you really want i have a super cool secret nickname." He said, sass evident in his tone.
"what is it?"
"it's dad," he whispered dramatically.
“I already call you dad!” He whined.
“So you’re a pro! You’re already so good at calling me that because you have so much practice!” He said.
Jack folded his arms, scowled, and looked defiantly out the window.
“Hey Jack do you know what else you’re a pro at?” y/n asked, redirecting his attention. “I think you’re a pro soccer player and that you’re definitely going to win your game.”
“Really?” he asked.
“Oh totally!”
“Do you think I’ll get to score a goal?”
“Why not? Tonight could totally be the night you score a goal. It’ll be for the right team and everything,” She turned around and extended her fist. “You got this dude.”
“I only scored on the wrong goal once and they didn’t even count it.” Jack said, rolling his eyes. “That’s what I mean! This one will definitely count. Are you going to leave me hanging?” She said, gesturing to her still outstretched fist.
Jack gave her a knuckles and was all smiles the rest of the car ride.
/ / /
“Come on bud you can do it! The ball’s right there! No-no your goal is the other one buddy, don’t kick the ball at your teammates goal!” Aaron yelled to Jack.
Soccer with six year olds was a great bonding experience for children and parents, as well as a wonderful test of patience.
Aaron and y/n were standing on the sidelines of Jack’s soccer game. It was about three quarters of the way done and they were tied 1-1. Aaron could see just how badly Jack wanted to score a goal, but Aaron wasn’t sure if he knew which goal to shoot towards. Y/n was to his left and making a plan on when to put in their two subs and keeping an eye on who looked like they needed a break.
A little girl on their team approached the sideline from the field, breathing heavily. She stopped in front of y/n and in a tired voice asked “Mrs. Hotchner can I come out? I need a drink.”
Aaron’s face went bright red and he pretended not to hear her. Suddenly the grass below his feet became very interesting to look at. He did his best to conceal his flushed face.
Y/n was not so lucky.
Blushing immensely, Y/n ushered the girl to the sidelines and said “Sure sweetheart, swap with Oliver here. Ollie, ask if anyone wants a break, okay?” She turned to the little girl, Aaron was pretty sure her name was Sophie. Y/n handed her a water bottle and knelt down to her height.
“Hey friend, I’m not Mrs. Hotchner. I’m not married to Jack’s dad. My name is y/n, you can call me that. Sound okay?”
Sophie shrugged. She didn’t seem to care. “Okay,” she agreed, walking back to the sidelines to resume watching the game.
Aaron was watching this interaction close enough that he hardly noticed the commotion on the field. Jack, his Jack, had managed to kick the ball far ahead of him and was now racing towards the goal. The correct goal, even.
Y/n stood up and raced to his side as they both cheered him on.
“Come on Jack, keep going dude!”
“You can do it buddy, shoot it!”
In what can only be described as slow motion, Jack gave a massive kick (the kind he would say was with all his muscles) and the ball made its way through the air and beyond the goalie’s reach and neatly into the back of the net.
They erupted in cheers, and Aaron wrapped y/n in his arms, picking her up and spinning her in excitement. She laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck, cheering for Jack. Gazing at the smile on her face, his arms tightened around her waist and a warm feeling settled in his chest. She was so pretty. And so lovely. Realizing what he was doing and what it looked like, he turned his gaze to Jack and the field, back to Y/n, back to Jack and the field once again, and slowly began to lower her down.
Once more on the ground, Y/n’s arms remained on his shoulders as she looked up at him with a warm, happy look on her face. Catching his eye and realizing the mortification of his expression. She quickly retracted her arms and took a small step away from him.
He assumed she was doing her best to make light of the situation when she softly punched him in the arm and held up her hand for a high five. “Right goal and everything. Nice job, coach.”
He returned the high five with a grin. “What can I say? He’s a pro.”
/ / / /
Aaron took Jack and y/n out for a celebratory ice cream after the game. A game winning goal seemed like it should warrant such an event, after all.
Once they got back, y/n volunteered to get Jack bathed and ready for bed. “I’ll get him clean and you can get him to sleep,” She had said, “yours is the way harder job anyway.” insisting he relax until Jack was ready for bed.
Once Jack was bathed and Aaron had tucked him in, Aaron headed back downstairs to the living room where y/n sat on the couch, fingers laced behind her head and her eyes closed. Her eyes opened as he came in. “You okay?” He asked.
“I’m exhausted,” she said. He sat down on the couch opposite her. “Jack decided he didn’t want any help getting out of the tub and slipped on his way out. I caught him, but he tried to grab onto the shower curtain to catch himself and it ripped right off the rings. I’m glad he didn’t fall but it scared the life out of me.”
Aaron said nothing, just raised his eyebrows. He knew she didn’t need him freaking out on her, and she would have yelled for him if things weren’t okay. She knew he trusted her.
“I’m fine and Jack’s fine, it just rattled me a little bit. Remind me to buy a new shower curtain on Monday. I just-” She rubbed her eyes. Aaron thought she did look tired. “ I think I’m going to take a bath myself and then go to bed. Do you need anything else?”
He was sure there were plenty of things he needed, but he had no clue how to voice them.
He needed to apologize for what had happened at the soccer game. He needed to apologize for that little girl thinking they were married and that he might actually like the sound of it. He needed to apologize for thinking Y/n Hotchner had a really nice ring to it. He needed to apologize for how pleased he was when she gave him a nickname. He needed to apologize for just how much he loved seeing her with his son, and how grateful he was that she loved Jack so much. He needed to apologize  for just how much he liked her and his growing attraction for her.
He shook his head.
She began walking up the stairs.
“Actually wait.” She stopped to look at him, and Aaron felt his resolve crumbling. “Earlier today you managed to get Jack to put away his legos and put on his soccer uniform without him whining at all. How did you do it?”
“Oh,” she said, leaning against the banister. Was that disappointment in her voice? “Ya know, kids are a lot more like adults than you think. Not many people like being told what to do all the time. Heaven knows you don’t,” she said.
“What?”
“You seem like you like to be in charge of things Mr. Unit Chief, even outside of your work life.” She looked him up and down. “Or am I wrong?”
He bit his tongue and let out a breath. “I guess so, yeah.”
“Jack gets it from you then. So instead of me telling him to do something just because I say so, which he would absolutely hate, I like to give him options and involve him in the process so that way he feels like he has a say in what he’s doing.”
Aaron nodded. He’d never thought of it that way.
Y/n continued. “I like to present him with choices that don’t really matter to me, so that way it doesn’t really matter which option he picks because things get done either way.”
“That’s really smart.” He’d been a parent for how many years and this hadn’t occurred to him? “I’ll have to do that more.”
“It’s a great tactic, and not just with kids. I use it on you sometimes too.” She smiled.
“Wait, what? You use it on me?”
She didn’t reply, only raising her eyebrows shrugging as she continued walking up the stairs. Something about the subtle up-down look she gave him made him think that when she said “outside your work life” she meant something else entirely.
He shook his head. This was crazy. He was crazy.
/ / /
It wasn’t uncommon for y/n to stay over on the weekends. In the instance Aaron was called on a case, it was easier if she happened to already be there. The house had a spare bedroom that was right next to Jack’s, and she seemed more than willing to stay over.
Y/n also insisted on staying because her current apartment only had a shower, and whenever she wanted to take a bubble bath she could stay at their house and use the bathtub in the bathroom she shared with Jack.
Y/n hadn’t been upstairs for long before Aaron’s phone rang. Recognizing JJ’s number he answered.
“Hey, Hotch. We’ve got a bad one. Family annihilator in Florida. How quick can you get here?”
“I’m on my way, be there soon.”
He went upstairs and got his go-bag together, going over the same mental checklist he always did before he left. Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, deodorant, razor- wait.
His razor wasn’t in his toiletry bag because Jack had wanted, no insisted  that he teach him how to shave his face (despite his evident lack of facial hair) so it was probably still in Jack’s bathroom. He knew y/n was in there, but he was sure he could be in and out without an issue. It was probably just on the counter.
He walked down the hall and knocked on the bathroom door. “Hey, y/n. Sorry I have a case and I need to go.”
“Okay! Thanks for the heads up!” She replied.
“Yeah of course. Listen, uh, yesterday Jack wanted me to teach him how to shave and I think I left my razor on the counter. Can I come in and grab it real quick?”
There was a pause. “Uh, well,” y/n hesitated. “I mean there isn’t currently a shower curtain in here from Jack’s incident earlier but-”
Realizing what he had just asked, Aaron's eyes widened. “I am so sorry. I didn’t mean- I just- I forgot- Never mind. I’ll borrow one from Dave.”
“No no no it’s okay.” She answered quickly. “I uh, I know how particular you are with razors and heaven help your team if you’re grouchy because you cut your face shaving” y/n replied, laughing awkwardly.
“I don’t get grouchy from-”
“Just- just give me a sec, okay?”
He waited silently as he heard light splashing and movement from inside the bathroom.
“You can- you can come in. I used a lot of bubble bath so I’m completely covered. You shouldn’t… see anything.”
Face aflame, Aaron took a deep breath. The bathroom was set up with the counter to the right and the bathtub straight ahead, about six feet from the door. If he kept his eyes on the counter he would be fine. Never mind the fact his son's nanny that he liked far more than he cared to admit and that had been mistaken for his wife at his son’s soccer game was right in front of him, with nothing but bubble bath and sheer embarrassment between them.
He eased open the door and kept his eyes glued to the counter, scanning for his razor.
Don’t look up don’t look up don’t look up-
“Where’s your case?” y/n asked.
“It’s uh- it’s in Florida.” He was having a hard time using his eyes to look for the razor and talking at the same time.
“Oh man. Florida. How crazy is it? Do you know?”
“JJ said it was bad, I don’t know much else.” Where was his stupid razor?
“Are you having a hard time finding it? What does your razor look like?”
He knew she was just trying to be helpful like she always was but he couldn’t find his razor and it wasn’t on the counter and he didn’t know if what he’d do if he had to look at her to answer her questions and he was sure his face was so red-
“Is it black and green? I think I moved it off the counter so Jack couldn’t reach it. It should be in the shower caddy. Hold on-”
Aaron’s eyes were still glued to the counter when he heard light splashing as he was sure y/n was moving to grab the razor from the caddy. It took more willpower than he cared to admit to not look up into the mirror’s reflection.
When the splashing settled he cleared his throat.
“Here,” y/n said.
Oh dear.
He cleared his throat and turned to look at her, and saw her sitting in the tub with her arm outstretched, razor in hand. She was right, He thought, She had used a lot of bubble bath. The swell of her chest was visible, but everything below it was completely covered in lavender scented bubbles, leaving her collarbones and shoulders exposed. Her hair was piled messily on the top of her head, her cheeks flushed pink (probably just from the heat of the water, he reminded himself), and a very amused look on her face.
Aaron felt the familiar warm feeling in his chest- just like he had at the soccer game. He was also certain his heart had somehow dropped into his stomach.
The long line of her collarbone, shoulder, and extended arm looked almost graceful as he tried his best not to stare.
“Is this it?”
“What?” He said stupidly.
“Is this your razor?”
“Oh, yeah it is. Thanks.” He reached forward and grabbed it from her outstretched arm, making a conscious effort not to touch her hand or any of her skin for that matter. Skin that he was sure that was very soft and smelled like lavender and-
He swallowed and made to leave the bathroom. “I’ll keep you updated on the case.”
“Hey, Hotch!” She said as he was just about out the door.
He turned around and gave her a lingering look. He saw her face flush, and with an embarrassed smile she said “Let me know when you land, okay?”
He nodded, saying nothing as he exited the bathroom and closed the door behind him. Walking down the hall and assembling the rest of his go-bag, he couldn’t get her concerned face out of his mind.
Once he was all set to go, he made his way down the hall and knocked on the bathroom once more.
“Yeah?” y/n said, a question in her tone.
“I’m- I’m heading out. Give Jack a hug for me.” He said through the door. He didn’t open it. He didn’t trust himself not to say or do something ridiculous if he did.
“I always do,” She replied, “Be safe! And hey, come home as quick as you can, Hotch. We miss you around here when you’re gone.”
He smiled to himself. “I will.”
He was determined to come home to her as quick as he could.

i don’t know if my first message sent 😪 but wolf please give me your top 5 artists eddie listens to
HIIII
Sorry this took so long, I took it way to seriously 😂
okay okay this was so hard because I have songs that are Eddie coded but I'm not sure he would listen to them/the artists (etc If I loved a Boy by We Three)
1. The Chicks (formerly Dixie Chicks) His sisters listened to them growing up and Eddie used to pretend he didn't like them (eww girls) but he has them on his playlist especially Texas Man
2. Zack Bryan - I relatively new listen - he heard Something in the orange on Buck's playlist (who got it from tiktok) and has been listening to him none stop since.
3. Noah Kahan (this might be self-indulgent because he's my favourite artist atm) but he would find him through the collab he has with Zack Bryan and loves the I Was/ I Am album but especially Godlight (Thanks to @spagheddiediaz for pointing out how Eddie coded this song is). Also (because he is actually a big romantic) he would love Everywhere, Everything.
4. Now this is getting tough but I think he would listen to someone his Abeula introduced him to as they danced around her kitchen when he was young. I don't know much about Spanish music from that era but maybe someone like Ritchie Valens or Juan Gabriel can or Lola Beltrán or maybe some more contemporary like Luis Miguel.
5. And lastly it would be someone Eddie started listening to because of Chris like If I Were a Fish by Corook but seeing as the rest of their songs aren’t super kid friendly maybe the Encanto soundtrack which the Buckley-Diaz family watched on one of their movie nights and it’s all Chris wanted to listen to in the car. Eddie's favourite song is Surface Pressure for obvious reasons. And he loves to sing Dos Oruguitas to Buck (who pretends not to understand what the lyrics say). Buck accuses of Eddie loving the movie and he just brushes it off saying it's Chris's favourite. It goes on a playlist with the Coco soundtrack and Eddie gets all teary eyes when Remember Me comes one.
Thanks for your ask!

MartianBugsBunny Reviews: The Music of Wish
I'v been working on this for the past week or so and I have now seen the movie...eight times I think? Four on one Sunday and four on the next lmao
Let’s get the basics out of the way first! Overall, a lot of these songs were mediocre but probably would’ve been things I’d sing in the shower ad nauseam if it weren’t for one or two really horrible lines. That’s kind of the overall theme of the music from Wish, to be honest. I liked the music/tunes of most of these, though. I also noticed that the lyrics have this weird dichotomy of “let’s rhyme these things even if it doesn’t make sense” and “let’s just not care about the rhymes,” both of which were kind of off-putting to me.
I think the voices they got to sing this stuff were MEGA wasted. Ariana DeBose has the most heavenly voice; her higher register has a gorgeous sound. Chris Pine is better at singing than I would've expected. Both of them are good at those subtle shifts in pitch (I think it's called melisma? but don't quote me on that) that I can and will go nuts over. They deserved better material to work with. Now onto the specifics! I’m gonna rank each song out of ten (totally arbitrary lol) and ramble about why for a while. It's not too long, so if you have a little time on yours hands, read on and enjoy!
Welcome To Rosas 5/10 Not bad. It terms of tune, it has some decent flavor, but the lyrics are pretty forgettable. I think using a song to set up the concepts that they did was a good idea, like the first song in Encanto, but I just don't like it much. I think part of that is the informal tone??? like when Asha says "so like, we have this king" or "I'm totally kidding" or "oh hey, did I mention," that kinda gets on my nerves. and yes, I'm well aware that's a little hypocritical bc The Family Madrigal did some of the same things, but WTR isn't super strong to begin with so I instantly become more annoyed at the little details. Also, Asha's literally being a tour guide for the kingdom and that's not professional imo.
At All Costs …… I’m not scoring this one. I don’t know how to. I’m addicted to the chorus, that’s the first thing I’ll say; I watched Wish four times on the first day I watched it, and that was the first part I started singing along with. The harmonies get into my gut. But honestly, in terms of context, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The lyrics sound like they should be directed at a person, not inanimate objects, which takes me out of the moment when I’m watching the movie. Some parts are a little clumsy, but if I’m viewing it as a love song it’s stunning, and DeBose and Pine's voices are heavenly together. I will say that subjectively, it's my favorite song in the soundtrack, I fell for it so hard and fast. <3
This Wish 7/10 In terms of Disney “I Want” songs this is at the bottom of the rankings, let’s be real. I like the sound of it, especially the non-syllabic vocalizations at the end of the chorus, but a lot of the lyrics just do not hit. Now, I will say that I saw a lot of people ragging on “to have something more for us than this,” and that’s actually one of my favorite parts of the song. It captures that feeling of longing for more without knowing exactly what that means or how to phrase it out loud so neatly. On the other hand, I definitely agree with the critiques of “throwing caution to every warning sign,” that’s one of my least favorite lyrics in the whole movie.
You’re A Star 6/10 Oddly, this one was less horrible than I expected. It delivered absolutely nothing, don’t get me wrong. It tried to tackle the idea of people and stars being made out of the same stuff and basically living as different notes in the same symphony and failed spectacularly. The big question “have you ever wondered why you look up at the sky for answers?” was one of my favorite lyrics in the entire soundtrack and there was NO payoff. (Plus, if I mixed up “elegant” and “eloquent” in a multi-million dollar movie I would never be able to look myself in the face again.) The entire second half of the song was pure lyrical garbage. But I like the tune and the animals are pretty cute, and despite being relatively hollow I found myself enjoying this one.
This Is The Thanks I Get 7/10 I’ve already said this but I’m gonna repeat myself: tonally this song was all wrong. 0/10 for that if I’m being perfectly honest. Something more along the lines of Hellfire or Be Prepared would’ve hit a lot harder—more sinister, more in line with the descent-into-madness thing that was occurring in the plot, would’ve improved this section of the soundtrack SO MUCH. With that complaint out of the way, the song we got was fine. Some of the lines were either poorly-written or repetitive, but as a whole I kind of enjoy it and would definitely dance around amateurishly in my room to it. It’s just too silly.
Knowing What We Know Now 1/10 This was my least favorite song in the entire movie. I just hate it. The lyrics are so sloppy.
This Wish (Reprise) 7/10 Honestly I think I liked this part better than the original song. Asha starting by herself and gradually being joined by her friends and the entire city was incredibly moving, and I might go so far as to say that this was the most powerful moment of the movie. I also enjoyed the twists on the original lyrics, particularly “we’re past dipping our toes in, we know it’s do or die, it’s sink or swim.” That part just felt really well done.

HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY ALADDIN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
Disney’s 31st animated film was released on this day in 1992 and has since become one of the studio’s classics and my personal favorite. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements (fresh off the success of their previous hit The Little Mermaid) and a phenomenal soundtrack by composer Alan Menken and song lyrics Howard Ashman (his final film) and Tim Rice. Just like with their previous musical films The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin was was a box office hit, surpassing both previous films by grossing over $200 million domestically which was a record for animated films at the time and wouldn’t be surpassed until 2 years when their next film The Lion King grossed over $300 million domestically.
I love this movie. As stated above, not only is it my favorite Disney movie, but it’s my favorite movie period. Running at 90 minutes, Aladdin has the perfect length for a movie (personal preference I know, but something about it being approximately an hour and half just has that right balance of not feeling too long or short). The story is simple but REALLY fun and just flows at a natural pace, again thanks to the movie’s length. This movie more than any other Disney animated feature really takes advantage of its medium and pushes it to the limit. I’ve always been a fan of slapstick cartoons like classic Looney Tunes/Tom and Jerry, Animaniacs, etc so Aladdin fits into that mold perfectly for me. This is also Disney’s best comedy and there’s only two other Disney films I can think of that match this film’s comedic energy (one of them also being directed by Musker and Clements).
I honestly don’t know what else I can say about Genie that hasn’t been said already. He’s the best comic relief/sidekick character, the late great Robin Williams set the bar really high with his iconic performance and paved the way for more pop culture based humor in animated films later down the line (for better and for worse). Even without the Genie, there’s still plenty of funny moments throughout the movie like this moment:
Tumblr media
On that note, Jafar is also a great Disney villain. He has that perfect balance of stoic and campiness along with a great character design that contrasts from the other characters but still fits in the world.
Tumblr media
Lastly, the songs are great. Aladdin was the last of the Menken/Ashman trilogy before the latter’s death during production of this and their previous film Beauty and the Beast. 3 of Ashman’s songs appear in the final film (Arabian Nights, Friend Like Me, and Prince Ali) and they’re all catchy as hell. Tim Rice took over where Ashman left off and wrote 2 new songs and 2 reprises (One Jump Ahead and it’s reprise, A Whole New World, and Prince Ali reprise) which are also great, especially A Whole New World which won an Oscar for Best Song and was the only Disney song to reach #1 on the Billboard Top 100 for nearly 30 years until We Don’t Talk About Bruno from Encanto accomplished that earlier this year.
There’s so much more I want to say about this movie, but this post is getting too long. Aladdin was a childhood favorite of mine that I watched several times on VHS and later on DVD for the behind-the-scenes bonus features (this is why physical media should never be taken for granted). It’s a part of that era in the 90s when Disney dominated with great animated musicals that also included The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King, and continue to be beloved classics to this day 30 years later.
What are some of your favorite moments, characters, and songs from Aladdin?

@lunamadrigal ‘s fun encanto question game! :D
1. If you lived in Encanto, what job would you have?
I’d like to be a teacher if they had a school there, that’d be really fun.
2. What ice cream flavors do you think would exist in Encanto if ice cream were plausible?
Lots of fruits probably, I don’t know what kind of fruit is native to Colombia but if you do then yeah those ones. Chocolate probably too.
3. For writers: Something you wish readers knew?
Hm nothing really big I can think of except I am just some person pls be nice to me.
4. For readers: Something you wish writers knew?
If you have an idea that you think is tropey or overdone, just do it. I am slurping them all up.
5. Any Encanto pet peeves? Can be canon or fic related.
It is a little annoying that the ending of the movie is rushed, but I get it yknow it’d be hard to fit in a lot of realistic development in the end there. That’s what fanfic is for babeyyyy!
As for fic related, I gotta say I’m not a huge fan of the Bruno kidnapping Mirabel trope. I do kinda get the appeal, especially back when it was a new idea, but mainly I just think those Brunos are too angry and/or confident for my taste. I actually kinda want to tackle the idea myself just to see what I’d do with it.
6. Who's your favorite OC and who do they belong to?
Hands down Reme from Candlelight by @clichejoe ! I think it is the only fic I’ve read that centers on an OC, but she is just everything. I’d die for her.
7. And your favorite OC design?
I’m in love with @hot-tortilla-fish ‘s Bruno gf OC. I can’t remember her name oof I’m so sorry, but her design is just so beautiful and she looks so good with Bruno. We love weird rat man x weird bug lady. So cute.
8. Smut in fics or keeping it Gen?
Gen hands down. I don’t mind some smut if it comes up (Candlelight again is an excellent example of top tier smut), But I don’t go out specifically looking for it if that makes sense. I’m mostly just here for the wholesome platonic family vibes. And drama and angst and pain of course.
9. Do you have a favorite underrated Encanto fic writer?
Not sure exactly what counts as underrated, but a sort of newer encanto writer I love is @icarusinthesand !
10. Pretend you’re Bruno for a second and you just stubbed your toe GO!
*screams* *fucking dies* *super dramatic about it* *getting many giggles and eye-rolls from the kids*
11. A song that would be on Camilo’s playlist?
So the fandom is in big agreement that he’s a theater kid, so definitely some musicals. I can see him absolutely getting in the Villain Song mood, I mean he was having the absolute time of his life playing spooky Bruno.
12. You’ve gotta kick one canon character out of Encanto. Sorry.
Aw man I’d never want to do that even if some of the villagers are a little rude. But I gotta go with donkey guy. Leave Luisa alone sir. He can take the donkeys with him he’ll be fine.
13. Tag an Encanto artist that is fueling the fandom cause they deserve a hug.

tagged by @highstrionics thank you so much!! ♥ and sorry, it took me quite some time to do this ;;

fave colour: I don’t think I have one favorite colour actually. But I tend to love shades of purple, blue, pink, grey and green a lot.
currently reading: Not reading any novel at the moment (even though I have many (way too many) in my to-read list. But right now all I can read is fanfiction. Pretty obsessed with this svsss fanfic (bingyuan, magical boys au) Balala Like Magic, You Transform My Heart by Kuku88 at the moment!)
last song: I’ve been listening to nothing but lofi hip-hop for the past two weeks. I don’t know why I kept denying myself this for such a long time because turns out it one of my favorite things to listen to and it’s been doing wonders to help me motivate myself into writing. I’ve been listening mostly the classic Lofi girl, but also found this band and especially this video from them, which I’ve been listening in repeat lately!
last series: First Kill. Watched it with a friend when he was over at my place because we didn’t know what else to watch but it was... disappointing tbh ;;;
last movie: It’s been so long since I last watched a movie that I don’t... even remember what it was, huh. I think it was Encanto? God, it’s been a while...
currently working on: Working on a SVSSS fanfic at the moment. I wrote 4 chapters so far and still have a lot to do. I just hope I’ll manage to finish that one (I have a bad habit of dropping wips, reasons why I no longer publish anything...) SVSSS is a fanfom that inspires me so much, though, it’s crazy. Like, I have a good dozens of fic ideas and parts of me really hope I’ll manage to write them all.

share 10 different favorite characters from ten different pieces of media in no particular order, then tag 10 people 🎥🎬📺
(this part took me forever tbh 10 different pieces of media is a lot for me, and having to pick just 1 for each piece was also super hard ;;;
1. Shen Qingqiu (SVSSS) - God SQQ, what a dork. I love him. I love him SO MUCH. So much. He’s my everything.
2. Cloud Strife (FFVII) - I cannot make a list of character and not mention him. He’s been a fave for roughly 20 years, after all.
3.  Lan Wangji (MDZS) - What to say, he’s a dear, I adore him ;v;
4. Crowley (Good Omens) - Favorite fallen angel~
5. Axel/Lea (kingdom hearts series) - By far my favorite character in the KH series.
6. Atem (Yu-Gi-Oh! DM & Season 0) -  Possibly one of my very first fictional “crushes”.
7. Frodo Baggins (LOTR) - Kinda like Cloud Strife, he’s been a fave for so long. I adore him.
8. Thanatos (Hades by Supergiant Games) - As far as I can tell, everyone loves Thanatos in Hades, and for very good reasons. I think me saying “He’s a dear, he’s a dork, I adore him” is valid for literally every single characters in this list =‘D
9. Ja’far (Magi The Labyrinth of Magic) - You know, it’s funny because I don’t actually like Magi all that much, and dropped the manga fairly early on and yet Ja’far remains one of my favorite characters. I loved him then, I love him still.
10. Mabudachi trio (Ayame, Shigure and Hatori Sohma - Fruits Basket) - Can’t mention one without the other two so I made an exception here and picked all three. Teenage me adored them so much aah
-
Tagging 10 people is just too much, I never know who to tag ;;; But feel free to do this even if I’m not tagging you!
Tagging @oddishblossom ; @demoiselledefortune ; @spacedoutpup ; @xkilluas(only if you guys want to!)

E or W for the music ask game, whichever you prefer! <3
Thank you so much for the ask @lyndeth-halfelven! I already did “E” in this post, so I’ll do “W” next:
What Have They Done To the Rain? written by Malvina Reynolds and performed by Joan Baez. I love how Joan Baez sings this song, and how it imparts such a keen sense of loss.
Where Now the Horse and The Rider? I really like this version by Yolanda Mott, in the style of a slow lament.
Wild Blue Yonder by The Amazing Devil. So much energy and excitement! This is a great song to sing along to on a long drive, not caring if it’s off-key.
We Don’t Talk About Bruno from Encanto. It’s sooooooo catchy! I especially love the part where they’re all singing simultaneously as they set the table.
Waiting on a Miracle from Encanto, sung by Stephanie Beatriz. This one makes my heart ache, and the part Mirabel sings on top of the roof with the fireworks always gets to me.

When Mirabel went: Someone please just let me know: where do I go? I am waiting on a miracle
And when Luisa went: Who am I if I don’t have what it takes? No cracks, No breaks, No mistakes. No pressure.
And when Isabela went: What could I do if I just knew it didn’t need to be perfect? It just needed to be? And they let me be?

some thoughts about the encanto “fandom” more specifically to non pocs.
it’s very clear who it yt and who is poc when it comes to hcs and thats what makes some hcs frustrating. some hcs treat the things characters a seen doing as “not normal” things when its actually just common things we do in our culture.
A lot of the actions Bruno does (i.e knocking on wood) is because of his superstitions, and it’s normal for him to do this a lot because latino people take superstitions very seriously (I would know. Im half Mexican and watched my Mexican father be extremely superstitious for 9 years) Bruno throwing the salt and sugar is also a common thing? i’ve done the salt thing many times lol. and when he was jumping over the cracks he was saying a healing spell at the same time. all he’s ever heard from people is that he brings back luck so of course he is going to do things that “ward off” bad luck.
Camilo’s character description “doesn't quite know who he is yet” + his powers being shapeshifting does not mean he’s gender fluid (and trust me, i would love this representation and some hcs make me really happy to see BUT..). His shapeshifting makes sense when they also describe him as a “Theatre Kid” and he’s 15! Of course he’s trying to figure out who he is! And im sure her feels pressure with his Abuela (literally everyone feels pressure from her!) The day after Anontios ceremony, she says “we’ll find a way to make your gift useful” and im sure she said the same to Camilo with shapeshifting, because that is a tricky one to figure out.
(+ i’ve seen someone say Camilo snapping his finger was a stim. it is not. this a common gesture in colombia and I see many of my hispanic friends do it too. Dolores hm is also an expression.)
Isabela not marrying a man does not make her lesbian, she was obviously just isn’t interested in that man (and he wasn’t as in love with her either) and was going with it to make Abuela happy, which is important to know and understand. That showed how she was doing something she thought was “best” for her family rather than being with someone she actually loves. Her song is literally about how she “has” to be perfect. That is her character story. The pressure of everyone telling her how perfect and beautiful she is and being frustrated and scared because she doesn’t want to be perfect.
Grandparents in latino families are honestly.. well it’s always something new. I can’t stand to see the way some people speak about Abuela. I was very upset with her too, and yeah she was a bitch but can you blame her for reacting the way she did? She had to flee her home because of a war that was happening, watched her husband die, and was left to take care of three children. of course she took control of things. she was scared to lose her family and because of that fear it over took her sight with trying to make everything be perfect and not weak. after all, the magic was given to her family. any signs of weakness could have made her lose her family and home, something she fought for, that her husband died for.
also if Abuela didn’t care about Mirabel, how was she the one to find her? Abuela cares for all of her family, she just had a hard way of showing it because of everything she had been through.
it’s totally okay to hc characters how you want and find comfort in these characters but a big problem with people hc characters is the fact that they are erasing the actual meaning behind the movie. lgbtq+ representation is amazing, especially coming from a kids movie but that is not what encanto is about. encanto was for latin representation and people are making it to be lgbtq+ representation. if you are going to talk about these characters then you do need to understand a lot of the thing they do and say have actually meanings a cultural beliefs behind them.
apologies if none of this makes sense, it is 3 in the morning for me but :) im tired of seeing certain things under the encanto tag! don’t even wanna get started on the weird and creepy shipping and how people are drawing characters with a lighter skintone + smaller noses.. sigh.. pocs can never have something for themselves can we?
( edited + mirabels clothing was to show and represent her family!!! and you would know that if you actually gave this movie serious attention instead of projecting your own thoughts and feelings onto it! mirabels clothing and all the embroidery made me really happy and brought all of warmth to my heart because it reminds me so much of my family and the traditional clothing women still wear.
edited pt.2 + okay wow i was not expecting this to get big but it did so now im adding a few more words to this.
first of all if you took this as me saying “queer pocs do not exist!!” you are the problem and the people im talking about. obviously they do im not stupid. is that really your argument with this? go argue with the wall because im not gonna have it.
anyways what i was trying to say yes you can have these hcs but these hcs are overshadowing the actual story to this movie. this movie is representation for latino people and talks about a subject that is extremely hard for latino families to talk about or even just think about so you bet your ass we are going to get frustrated watching white people turn this movie into things that have nothing to do with the movie. that’s all these hcs are doing. ignoring the actual subject when we finally got something that talked about, represented it well and gave people comfort.
i’m honestly done speaking about it because whats there to talk about? clearly those who disagree aren’t listening to those who are frustrated and trying to understand. i’ll mute this now. thank you to the people who understand or stated they would take the time to understand.)

Reminders of Encanto - BEWARE OF MAJOR SPOILERS
1. I know I made an announcement prior to Encanto premiere that Alma TOLD Mirabel not to come to Antonio’s gathering. But after seeing the movie, I can happily say that said info was wrong. Alma specifically told Mirabel that she shouldn’t HELP with preparing for Antonio’s ceremony but NEVER she couldn’t wrong. I was wrong and I’m happy that I was.
2. I also remembered seeing the Madrigals take a family picture without Mirabel (as seen in the official trailer). Yes, that was a painful moment of Mirabel. But in context, the family (including Alma) DID NOT tell her to not come. It was just in the heat of the moment. At worst, it was a moment of insensitivity but it’s not something worth demonizing them. They aren’t one-dimensional bad people, they’re complex, well-rounded people who make mistakes. And as I go on in the third point, you’ll see they DO LOVE Mirabel.
3. Yes, I also made a thorough analysis of Mirabel’s isolation from her family. And was right on a few of those except for the Alma thing I mentioned in the previous point. When I watched the movie, I noticed that no one ACTIVELY excluded Mirabel. Were they surprised when she walked with Antonio to his room? Yes. But they were just that: Surprised (sans Isabela who looked annoyed). They were all worried about her when she was still inside the crumbling Casita. They all told her to get out and leave the dwindling candle. And they actively searched for her when she ran away afterwards.  And I DON’T want to hear or see people demonizing her parents. They aren’t perfect but they also supported and validated her as well as defend her from Alma’s harsh treatment. Also, while the family (especially Alma and Pepa) were freaked out when they saw Bruno’s vision of Mirabel, NONE of them made a suggestion like exiling her or kicking her out.
4. I’ve seen a lot people state Alma “got off too quickly with just an apology”. And I’m like, “Seriously? Did you guys watch the same movie as I did?” I am NOT excusing Alma for her actions, especially towards Mirabel, but she’s NOT a flat villain, she’s a complex and nuanced woman. She did was she thought was best for her family at the time. Something she had to do after losing her original home and husband at a young age. She made mistakes. She said and did hurtful things. She also saw the errors of her ways. She SEARCHED for Mirabel. Found her granddaughter and APOLOGIZED for her actions. And while Alma explained her reasons, she also noted how she gradually hurt her family, therefore she doesn’t excuse her actions. Alma GREW. I mean, seriously why do fandoms have to be ridiculous. Why do some of you have to be like, “OMG. An apology won’t fix anything”. Well you know what? It’s a 99 minute movie, not a TV series so they can’t go into that kind of growth. Plus, Alma admitting her mistakes and apologizing is A GOOD THING.
5. Bruno wasn’t kicked out of Casita. He willingly left because he wanted to protect Mirabel from being scapegoated as a child.
6. I have heard there’s some discourse on Pepa’s song about Bruno but here’s the thing: She was made at him for accidentally ruining her wedding but she NEVER said she stopped loving him. And when they plus Julieta finally reunite, it was Pepa who hugged him first (Julieta wasn’t far behind though) and gladly welcomed him back. I DO think we could’ve had a scene were Pepa explains that the ACTUAL reason she doesn’t want to talk about Bruno is because she misses him too much and uses the whole wedding thing to cover it up.
7. Like the above point, Pepa and Bruno’s relationship mirrors Mirabel and Isabela’s. And I some people say Isabela should’ve apologized. And I’ll be honest: I DO think they missed an opportunity for Isabela to reveal that she envies Mirabel for not having to meet such high expectations and is doted on by their parents (they love all their daughters equally it’s just because of a combo of Mirabel being the youngest and Alma being hardest on her). That would’ve been great to see but I think even if she DID apologize, the fandom would have the SAME TIRED REACTION to when Alma actually apologized for the same dumb reason. Also, Mirabel calls out Isabela on her behavior before they reconcile and while I think they missed a chance, I’m still happy.
8. My take on the family not defending Mirabel from Alma’s accusations: I’m happy they went this route. Because it’s Mirabel calling out her grandmother’s behavior, something you wouldn’t see her doing at the beginning. The confrontation was ALL about Alma and Mirabel and the escalating tension between them.

Encanto review thingy sort of
Unpopular opinion but even though I love the songs in Encanto, specifically “surface pressure” and “we don’t talk about Bruno”, I felt that the story itself was just slightly above average, like a 6.5/10.
Pros:
It was relatable, especially coming from a background similar to the characters of Encanto where family pressures and the overemphasis on the importance of family ties actually often end up being detrimental mentally to the children, and that people who end up not fitting in/being useful become the black sheep and is ostracised or even not spoken about at family gatherings.
That’s one of the reasons I adore Luisa, she never treated Mirabel horribly. Even though she’s this big buff strong woman that everyone relies on, you can still see such love and gentleness she has towards her younger “untalented” sister. I mean look at how she has her arm around Mirabel in this photo. Just 💕.
Tumblr media
Bruno loves his family so much that the thought of him hurting or ruining his family’s image with his gift caused him to “disappear” and essentially live within the walls of the house, to remain close with his family, but not so close that he can cause them further unhappiness.
Other pros:
The overall animation and character expressions were amazing, the world was colourful instead of drab, the settings were stunning.
Cons:
There is not enough time given to each individual character and the conflicts are resolved too quickly. The pacing of the movie is also very weird, important scenes in the movie feel rushed and feelings are glossed over.
Mirabel has all the right in the world to feel disdain towards the perfect Isabela. Even though Isabela suffered as well from the pressures of being perfect, she was also constantly mean spirited to Mirabel in a way that Luisa never was. And then they sing a song about how Isabela was doing it for the family and was not given freedom to express herself and they hug and the good ending prophecy was achieved or whatever.
Same with Mirabel’s conflict with Abuela. Like yeah, I get it, she’s old and had her own trauma, but she was definitely let off too easily. Like her attitude towards her own son cause him to self-exile for 10 years because he thought that was the only way to make her and in extension the rest of the family happy. Seriously, wtf? Then they sing a song and she hugs him and everything is sunshine and rainbows again.
While I do not hate Alma as a character, I think more of the healing should’ve been shown on screen rather than an off screen implication.
Tumblr media
Even though it’s realistic because you can have the worst grandma ever (a.k.a my paternal grandma) and everyone just brushes it off as “she’s old”, “she’s suffered a lot in her life”, “it’s a generational thing”. It’s a bad lesson to teach in a movie. I mean basically Alma went “sorry, it was trauma lol, but I’ll be better now :)” and everything she did that hurt others in the past just doesn’t matter anymore. Everyone’s mental health is now cured. 🌈
Anyway, yeah.
Tldr,
1. good songs
2. love most of the characters
3. unfortunately there were so many characters that most of them feel very under-utilised. The movie would have benefited from an additional hour or from a mini series. Example: I love Antonio but I straight up forget he existed every time he wasn’t in frame.
4. the way they resolved conflicts were lame, the way they just sing away their trauma and immediately forgive the people who mistreated them was also kinda lame.
No need to add your 2¢ cause I kinda don’t care lol. Make your own opinion essay.

My Ranking of The Encanto Soundtrack(From Most to Least Favorite)
*The Encanto soundtrack is great and there is no song I dislike*
Here is my ranking:
1. We Don’t Talk About Bruno
I know it’s a pretty basic favorite but I don’t care. I love the music and the different singing styles. Plus, it introduced me to the movie. I heard about how popular this song and I listened to the audio and got hooked. My favorite parts are Dolores and Camilo’s, they are unique and great.
2. Surface Pressure
As someone who has anxiety issues and feels constant pressure, this song really resonated with me. The lyrics were also really, and I got sort of emotional near the end. Jessica Darrow does a great job singing this song.
3. Waiting on a Miracle
I also struggle with feeling out of place in my family so Waiting on a Miracle hit me hard in the feels. I don’t have a lot to say other than I relate to the lyrics and the desperation in Mirabel’s voice to make her family proud.
4. Colombia, Mi Encanto
This song gives me such nostalgia on the good times I had with my grandmother when I was little. And the beat is just so infectious.
5. What Else Can I Do?
Now we are at part of the list where I don’t particularly love the songs.
I don’t know why but I don’t feel much for this song even though it is well produced and the lyrics are good. Maybe it’s because I don’t like Isabella that much. She was a good character but I had trouble connecting with her troubles, especially when the way she was handling it was being mean towards Mirabel. I think I would’ve been more forgiving towards her if a reason for her anger towards Mirabel was addressed and that Isabella’s development was not so rushed.
6. The Family Madrigal
Weirdly enough, I’m not in love with the musical numbers that don’t focus on a specific character. I guess with We Don’t Talk About Bruno is like an ensemble song but the main focus was Bruno. The Family Madrigal is a great song for introducing all the characters in a fun way though I wouldn’t listen to it as much.
7. Dos Oruguitas
I’m not a Spanish speaker so it’s hard for me to connect with this song since it’s all in Spanish. Though, it fits perfectly with the corresponding scene, and I got pretty emotional the first time I saw the scene.
8. All of You
Like The Family Madrigal, I didn’t love All of You because it was an ensemble song. There were some parts are enjoyed like Bruno’s little rap and the small cute moments between the family. Mirabel finally getting a door was so sweet though.
Overall, this is a really cute ending song!
Comment your ranking and your thoughts on mine. 😁

Movies and TV shows I have been watching recently (October 2021- February 2022)
1. Inside Job
Tumblr media
Rating: 10/10
Well, it isn’t just the fact Alex Hirsch was involved with it, this is quality. I kin Reagan myself and I enjoyed her character arc. Also, it has a wonderful cast of characters with interesting conspiracies. This is a must watch!
2. The Eternals
Tumblr media
Rating: 7/10
While it was entertaining, the plot was not well executed. It was confusing for a Marvel movie. All the characters were introduced at the same time, making us see barely any character development. I enjoyed some of the fight scenes and the humour, but overall, it lacks as a Marvel movie.
3. Kid Cosmic
Tumblr media
Rating: 9/10
Another hit from the animation legend himself, Craig McCracken. As many people know, I am a huge fan of his work. Kid Cosmic has enjoyable characters and a captivating storyline. Do yourself a favour and go ahead and give it a chance.
4. Encanto
Tumblr media
Rating: 9.5/10
I know most people have seen it as it was super popular. However, I wanted to give some of my insight. I absolutely loved the well composed music by the theatre legend himself, Lin Manuel Miranda. I also enjoyed the family dynamic of the Madrigals, especially Bruno. I had We Don’t Talk About Bruno stuck in m head for weeks.
5. House of Gucci
Tumblr media
Rating: 7/10
While the movie was enjoyable, they were never clear about the time periods each event took place in, making it confusing. I did struggle to understand the plot but I did enjoy the story.
6. Spiderman: No Way Home
Tumblr media
Rating: 10/10
Not going to spoil it but it was fantastic and action packed. It was very unpredictable from its plot and I was at the edge of my seat while watching it.
7. Home Sweet Home Alone
Tumblr media
Rating: 3/10
Well, here's another Home Alone reboot but by Disney. I had no faith in this film, even before I saw it. It was predictable and unfunny. Even the Buzz McCallister cameo did not make the movie any better. The scenes where the bad guys get tricked was so unfunny and rather violent. This movie was just a cash grab.
8. Chris Chan: A Comprehensive History
Tumblr media
Rating: 10/10
Before you ask, I do not SUPPORT anything Chris Chan has done. However, I was invested in her life story and how she became known on the internet. This documentary series is 59 parts and very detailed about her life. I can’t wait to see more episodes.
9. Sing 2
Tumblr media
Rating: 6.5/10
I do believe that even though the Sing franchise is not perfect, it’s over hated. This movie follows an average sequel formula, introducing new characters and having a predictable plot. I enjoyed the directing and music throughout the movie.
10. The King’s Daughter
Tumblr media
Rating: 4/10
While the movie was watchable, it was mediocre at best. There was overuse of CGI for the mermaid character and the plot was predictable. The worst part of the film was that they used one of Sia’s pop songs in a 1600′s setting.
11. Arcane: League of Legends
Tumblr media
Rating: 9.5/10
While I’ve never played League of Legends, I was still able to enjoy and understand the plot of the show. The show has many good characters and arcs.  I cannot wait for the release of season 2. My only problem with the show is that it was slow paced and kind of boring during the fourth and fifth episode, but eventually the pace picks back up. This show definitely deserves a watch.
12. Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2021)
Tumblr media
Rating: 6/10
I was initially expecting this movie to be awful, but I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, this iteration has many flaws, but it was executed well. The main thing I disliked about the film was that they left out some plot points the original film had included, like when Greg auditioned for the play and his dislike for Patty. Overall, it was “okay” at its best.
13. The Cuphead Show!
Tumblr media
Rating: 8.5/10
I was super excited for this show because I actually played the game myself. While the show kept the tone of the game, it had a few flaws. I did not see some of the characters (or bosses) I wanted to see. I understand the show was mainly trying to focus on Cuphead and Mugman, but I wanted to see more characters. I enjoyed seeing the Devil, King Dice and The Root Pack the most. I have high hopes that season 2 will improve on the show.

Okay so I just watched Encanto and I went into it really thinking I would love it based on all the hype I’ve been seeing on this website and how much I loved Moana which was also soundtracked by LMM. I’m fully aware this is probably a super unpopular hot take so I’m ready to get roasted, and I fully accept that I am plausably just too old for it and this was aimed more exclusively at the kid/teenage demographic than other disney princess films, but I really didn’t like it that much, or if you’ll pardon the worlds worst pun: no me encantó Encanto
I’ll start with what I did like and then put my absolute roast under the cut so that if you did really connect with the film you don’t have to read it:
1) I absolutely adored the overall theme of familial healing and conflict. That is something that really resonates with me on a personal level and I wish there was more childrens media that targeted it. If anything how much I loved that made me feel even more let down by certain things about it but that’s a story for under the cut.
2) The character design was absolutely spot on with every single member of the family. They all looked so visually exciting and you could get a good grasp of what they were about just by looking at them, which was especially important given that grr I’m saving it for the cut. I also loved that it was such a brightly coloured film in general.
3) Bruno is absolutely deserving of the title of tumblr sexyman. I could fix that man and break him all over again. 10/10 would fuck tío Bruno. I also did enjoy the song ‘we don’t talk about Bruno’ and his little family re-bonding verse in the final number
Now on with the roast and if this was a real comfort film for you then I would recommend going about your day and I wish you much fun in the Encanto fandom
1) I feel like they did a really bad job of setting up the core conflict between abuela and Mirabel in the first half of the film. It wasn’t until half way through the film that I really got that this was a conflict that existed, and up until that point I was genuinely reading their relationship as Mirabel is a bit of a wildchild and abuela sternly but lovingly sometimes has to reign her in. Everything up until that point from abuela genuinely read to me as stern but well meaning parenting and Mirabel’s distress about not having a gift felt like an entirely internal conflict rather than. They should have explicitly showed irrational harshness from abeula (bonus points if it has negative consequences for the family in general) and it having an affect on Mirabel.
2) I thought the songs (with the possible exceptions of Bruno and the final number) were quite badly integrated into the film. It felt like they just decided that layering some percussion for a couple of bars before they started singing was enough to create a transition but didn’t integrate it properly into the dialogue, so instead of dragging me in further the songs took me out. There are a bunch of ways of fixing this but I think the reason it was such a problem was the overuse of solos. If Luisa’s song for instance had started as a dialogue between her and Mirabel in the first verse it would have been a lot easier to integrate.
3) This leads me onto my first issue with this film chronologically (and thus the one that made me first realise this would not be my next Moana). I strongly feel that the opening number should not have been basically a Mirabel solo with 4 lines from abuela (that fall into issue #1), but rather a going back to hogwarts/ready to go style song where each character has their own verse that they sing themselves riffing off the core melody but changing slightly for each character to reflect their personality and incorporate key melodic moments from solos they have later in the film. Now I know what you’re thinking ‘Ashley you’ve drank too much kool-aid jesus christ woman watch another musical’, if I say in the style of the opening number to Into the Woods is that better? Is that a more legitimate example? Is Sondheim enough for you? But seriously this is not an un-common style of opening number (even in disney!) and having the character’s sing about their own desires rather than Mirabel singing on their behalf would do the following things (yeh this annoyed me so much it gets sub points):
> Make them feel like plot drivers with their own desires and motivations. This would mean that when Isabel and Mirabel reconcile it would have so much more weight because Isabel would be a seperate actual person who you’re emotionally invested in). This would be even more profound with abuela. If this film wants to be about healing family conflict (which I also want it to be) then it needs to recognise that everyone will be coming from their own perspective and genuinely believe themselves to be in the right, if you don’t understand that perspective then you don’t get the impact of them overcoming it.
> Give Mirabel the space to express friction with them. Its no wonder it took me until half way through the film to understand that she had conflict with her family when she had to spend the opening number literally hyping them up to kingdom come.
> Actually make you remember what the characters can do. There are still at least 3 of them that seemed interessting but I couldn’t tell you their names for the life of me and given that Dolores’s gift is significant to the plot it would have been helpful if I could remember what that gift was.
> Make the song more interessting to listen to and allow you to make it longer without the audience losing interest. You can even intersperse dialogue!
4) Okay this is just personal preference and probably where me being old becomes an issue but I didn’t like that for Luisa’s and most of Isabela’s solo they were in some weird animated dream scape rather than the town itself on the ‘real’ set of the action. The animation was super cool don’t get me wrong but it felt really ungrounded.
5) Isabela’s hair looked really clunky. To be clear I know hair is super hard to animate in 3D so maybe the technology doesn’t exist or something but it looked like she had a ton of hair spray in. I also didn’t like the ears because they look like Kryton’s ears from Red Dwarf. If you haven’t seen Red Dwarf this probably wasn’t an issue but I couldn’t unsee it.
6) No animal sidekick.
7) This is not an issue with the film so much as an issue with the anglosphere and america in particular. At first I didn’t like the way they used a mix of diegetic and non-diegetic with lyrics when a lot of those. I then realised that this is because all of non-diegetic songs were in Spanish and I was like shit so that was probably the only way they were allowed to get spanish language songs into the film cuz Disney, fucking anglosphere being scared of other languages. But then I had to check my own self when I realised they also do this exact same thing in my beloved Moana but in that case the non-digetic songs are in Tokelauan (apparantly) which is a language that I obviously don’t speak so I’m probably being biased by the fact that I know enough spanish that I can get the gist of the songs. Anyway, in conclusion languages, imperialism and how that relates to childrens media is a whole big messy ball that I’m not qualified to have an opinion on.
