01. DISCLAIMER : This is a writing and roleplaying blog. I do not claim to have any affiliation with any of the faceclaims or properties portrayed here. Any and all icons or graphics will be mine, unless stated otherwise. I will always give credit to the original creator of graphics or icons that I use. PSD can be found HERE.
02. BANNED MUSES AND FACECLAIMS :  Billy Hargrove from Stranger Things, Tate Langdon from American Horror Story, Evan Peters (as Pietro Maximoff), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (as Pietro Maximoff), Elizabeth Olsen (as Wanda Maximoff), Scarlett Johansson, Kilgrave of Marvel Comics and Netflix’s Jessica Jones, Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis. (SUBJECT TO BE UPDATED)
03. This blog is SELECTIVE & PRIVATE. I will only be roleplaying with MUTUALS and priority will be given to friends and people I’ve already built relationships with ooc and ic. This is not meant to exclude anyone, as I’m always willing to start new threads and talk to new people. I will also only follow people that are 21+.
04. This blog is on SELECTIVE ACTIVITY. I can disappear for days, weeks, or months at a time due to life, work, mental health reasons, other blogs I want to write on, etc. I am reachable through discord 99% of the time, however, if you want to keep contact when I am not on this blog.
05. I am generally DUPLICATE FRIENDLY, but I just won’t follow first because that makes me anxious. Duplicates can make me anxious, even if they exist on a multimuse, but I am getting better at it. If you share any of the muses on my list, be it on a solo or multimuse blog, please feel welcome to follow.
06. I will NOT roleplay smut. I am over the age of 18, but will not actively write nsfw content due to personal preference. 99% of nsfw things will be discussed in private messages and not posted. Any other nsfw content that appears on this blog (blood, violence, etc.) will be appropriately tagged. If I do not tag something you would like to be tagged, please let me know.
07. FORMATTING : I tend to use small text and italicize for emphasis. I am also largely iconless as I just don't have the energy anymore to make icons, especially for all the muses I have here. I do use a small separation banner/graphic on replies.
08. REQUEST ONLY MUSES : I have a few characters who are listed as request only on my muse list. Typically, this means they are more plot heavy / plot-based than some of my other characters (though i'm generally plot-based) and I’ll really want to focus on developing plots and dynamics. When we first plot, I may not always suggest them for plotting, but if you would like to plot and write with them, you are more than welcome to request them.
09. MEMES : Mutuals are more than welcome to send memes at any point (my meme tag is always linked above). We do not need to have plotted in order for you to send a meme! Memes are such a good way to get interactions started and to feel out dynamics. If you send  a meme prior to plotting, though, I may just come into your IMs (or we can share discord names) and do a little bit of plotting in order to respond.
10. MAINS & EXCLUSIVES : I do tend to practice mains and exclusives with people I have developed specific dynamics with between our characters. In terms of exclusivity, this does not need to be mutual. You could absolutely write with other versions of my muses, I just likely won't write with other versions of your exclusive muse.
11. ALTERNATE UNIVERSES : I'm a big fan of AUs. Even if I don't have something listed under a specific character's "verses" section, I am always on board to develop something brand new during plotting. I'm also more than willing to adjust my verses/AUs for the sake of making a plot work better for our muses.

LotF Iceberg Meme
Tumblr media
I haven't seen one of these before so I decided to make my own. Full explanation under the cut! (art on second tier is by@/sinnamonralph and art on third tier is by admin huck of @/ask-jalph )
tw- brief non-descriptive mentions of rape/sexual assault
Surface:
jalph memes- kind of self explanatory, also just lotf memes in general
maurice is a memelord- the popular headcanon that maurice is a dank memer
character name puns- the many puns you see in lotf fans' usernames, e.g.- memerice, jackass merridick, etc
simon deserved better- he really did
1963 and 1990 movies- i think most people know about these two film adaptations. the 1963 version is objectively better
c sharp jokes- i just thought of this one while i was writing out the explanation and couldn't be bothered to go back and add it, sorry. jokes based around jack bragging that he can sing c sharp in chapter 1
Shallow:
lotf 100 minifics- a popular series of oneshots on AO3 by the user queencrank, largely centred around smut
roger x rocks- popular (?) crack ship, sadly i have been subjected to rule 34 of this
surname headcanons- since only jack and percival have canon surnames, lots of fans make up surnames for the other characters, e.g.- maurice hall, roger moore (both my headcanons)
magic conch- the subject of a spongebob episode which parodies lotf, appears in a lot of memes outside the fandom
lotf rejected by 17 publishers- lotf was initially rejected many times before eventually being published, i think this one is common knowledge
lotf based on william golding's time in ww2- his exposure to the horrors of human nature during his time in the war inspired the core themes of the novel, again probably common knowledge for those who have studied the book
simon is jesus- simon is heavily implied to be an allegorical figure representing jesus (the link is much more explicit in earlier drafts of the novel). william golding expands on this idea in his essay 'fable', i'd recommend reading it if you're curious.
roger and simon are canonically POC- i added this one because i often see fanart of them (mainly roger tbf, though i have seen some of simon as well) as white so figured it wasn't completely common knowledge. both are described as having darker skin tones in the novel.
all female lotf- the controversial all-female film adaptation of lotf announced back in 2017. the idea was scrapped (presumably due to backlash and staff changes) and it is now going to be an all-male adaptation directed by luca guadagnino! i'm so hyped for it!!!
pig's head is satan- the eponymous 'lord of the flies' is based on beelzebub, another title for satan (or sometimes a separate demon depending on who you ask)
piggy's real name is charles- not sure how common this is tbf but i often see people stating piggy's real name as charles in fanfiction. there isn't evidence for this in canon so i assume it is just a popular fan headcanon
Mid-Depth:
nopeimnotrussian art- i see art by this person literally everywhere when i'm looking up lotf fanart and i only found out who they were today. they make a ton of jalph content and generally seem pretty cool.
EDIT- ok so the art for this tier was supposed to be something by nopeimnotrussian but I messed up and used a picture that was drawn by someone else (aka sinnamon ralph, also a very cool artist with a nice username)! apologies, i'll make sure to be more careful in the future when using fanart. and thank you to the commenter who corrected me!
ask jalph- an ask blog i also see art from everywhere (particularly art by one of their admins, admin huck). also applies to lotf ask blogs in general, there are a lot of very cool and creative ones out there!
lotf stageplays/musicals- i was going to list a specific example but there are so many of these it was difficult to choose one. i really want to see one someday
retribution- another popular lotf fanfic written by circadian lily on fanfiction.net/AmRye on AO3. i'd highly recommend reading this one, it's so good
lotf is a fanfic- lotf is partially a satire of 'the coral island' by r.m. ballantyne and other similar coming-of-age adventure stories for boys which were popular at the time. the main characters are called ralph and jack in both works, and some phrases in lotf are taken almost word for word from the coral island.
piggy's real name is peterkin- the character peterkin in the coral island (see above) seems to have partially been the inspiration for both simon and piggy. the name simon may have been based on peterkin (as peter from the bible later took on the name simon), but i like to consider piggy's real name to be peterkin since it isn't already being used by another character as it is.
eastern bunny- an artist who made several popular fanarts i often see being reposted (such as one of jack and ralph holding child versions of the other major characters, and one of jack holding a spear up to ralph's neck). sadly i'm fairly certain their tumblr has been deleted, but they are very talented and i love their work.
ralph's mum- ralph's mother is mentioned to have been absent from ralph's life in the book but it is unclear whether she left her family voluntarily or died. i've seen different interpretations in fanfiction.
characters that only appear in the 1990s movie- there are several characters mentioned by name in the 1990s movies that did not appear in the original book, such as dominic. i always feel excited when i see people mention them (same for obscure characters from the book itself like stanley and walter)
irl lotf- there are actually multiple cases of events similar to lotf occurring in real life, the most well-known one being this one i believe
Deep:
1963 movie deleted scenes- there are around 2 hours of additional footage which were cut from the 1963 film adaptation of lotf, including several important scenes which were key to ralph's character development such as the interaction between jack and ralph in chapter 3 of the novel. while i sadly haven't been able to find a lot of these deleted scenes, you can see some of them online such as the one i just mentioned, which is available here.
fable essay- this essay was written as part of a larger collection of essays entitled 'dreams'. it is included in the back of the education edition of lotf which is widely available in bookstores in my country (england), although i imagine you can find it elsewhere if you want to read it. it provides some interesting insights into golding's thought process while writing the novel as well as some extra details on characters and themes.
original first chapter- lotf originally had an extra chapter at the start which expanded more on the nuclear war occurring in the background of the present novel and the circumstances behind the plane crash which triggered the novel's events. this chapter was later cut as many of the publishers who rejected the novel particularly disliked it. the original draft of lotf is currently being held by the university of exeter in england. it's my dream to go and read it one day.
living lord of the flies- a 2013 mini-documentary narrated by tom gaman (who played simon in the 1963 movie) about the production of the movie and his experiences during filming.
alkitrang dugo- a lesser-known filipino lotf movie adaptation from 1975. i haven't been able to find this anywhere so i haven't seen it sadly, but i know it had both male and female characters stranded on the island.
jack is based on younger william golding- i don't remember where i read this so admittedly i'm not sure how reliable it is, but i feel that there is some basis to jack being based on william golding himself. golding was fairly problematic when he was younger (and in general actually), having once attempted to rape a 15 year old when he was 18, for example.
continuity errors- i thought i made a post on this a while back but i can't find it for the life of me (it might have been on the since-deleted lotf amino actually)- essentially, there a couple of continuity errors in the novel which i think about excessively even now, i.e.- henry is referred to as a littlun and a bigun at different points in the novel, maurice's height is inconsistent, and bill is simultaneously in both ralph and jack's tribes for a bit.
Mariana Trench:
lotf is set in 1952- i've seen a lot of debate about when exactly lotf is set, and there is technically a canon answer to this. in the original draft of lotf, the novel ends with the time and date: '16.00, 2nd October, 1952.' however, it's possible that this would have been changed in the final version of the novel. i personally headcanon the year lotf is set in as 1954, the same year it was published.
beating scene in 1963 movie was real- this scene was based on the scene in the novel where jack orders wilfred to be beaten for essentially no reason. in the movie, the actor volunteered to actually be beaten for this scene.
irl roger- the actor who played roger in the 1963 movie, roger (!!!) elwin, was basically just his character in real life. apparently he used to throw live lizards into fans while on set. when the production staff asked him why he was doing it, he answered that he wanted to see how many pieces they would be cut into.
rape scene- the scene in the novel where the boys hunt and kill the sow that later becomes the lord of the flies is apparently supposed to resemble a rape, illustrated by phrases such as 'wedded to her in lust' and by the place roger stabs her in. i was pretty freaked out when i first saw this interpretation of that scene, it gives an already disturbing scene an even darker context.
william golding performed social experiments on his students- golding was a teacher at bishop wordsworth school in salisbury, england while he was writing lotf. during this time he frequently ran experiments on his students in which he split them into groups and set them against each other, much like in lotf. some of the characters in lotf may also have been based on golding's students.
deleted jalph ending- while the lotf fandom wiki seems to be a bit better maintained now, when i first joined the fandom about 4 years ago it was super chaotic and filled with random edits. one of these was a claim that there william golding initially wrote an alternate ending to the novel in which jack and ralph get together, which was later removed. i just thought it was funny so i decided to add it here.
Well, that's everything! This post took me like 2 and a half hours to make, so I hope it was at least somewhat interesting/entertaining. Sorry for my sporadic posting schedule as always, I've been really busy with university lately (that and I seem to only end up posting when I'm hit with a sudden deluge of lotf brainrot, like now). I do have another meme I started making and then didn't finish, I might post that at some point if I do actually finish it. Anyway, thank you if you managed to read all of this and I hope you have a great day/night!

JP vs. Localization in Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation
(Okay, for real this time lol)
Again, here’s a link to my sources post.
Fortunately, this route follows suit in terms of good localization quality after Conquest. It’s the shortest out of all the posts, since I don’t really have a lot to talk about. Mostly subtle line changes, references and a few key points of information that were cut out. I also went through Hidden Truths and Heirs of Fate to see if I could add stuff from those on here, but there were no big problems that I found.
Once again, the main part of this post will all be put under the cut. If a chapter isn’t covered, it means I didn’t think there were any differences worth talking about.
I’ll use localized names for characters and locations, unless I feel the need to do otherwise.
I’ll be using she/her when referring to Corrin in this post. (I flipped a coin to decide the gender lol)
Also, note that after Chapter 14, the translation of this route on Fateswartable ends, so I mostly relied on the English patch done by Serenes at that point forward. (I also used PegasusKnight.com as a reference to fall back on if I needed it)
Chapter 7
-A minor gripe I have with localization. The JP version compares Touma (Valla) to hell constantly. To jump ahead a bit, I believe in the JP versions of the End of All Sky/Land/Below tracks are even called The End of All Roads Heaven/Earth/Hell. The Vallites are also often called demons in the JP version, and Anankos himself is known as the ‘Invisible Demon Dragon’.
Another cool thing I just thought of too, is a connection to a popular Japanese short story. Zelda fans might be familiar with the story, “The Spider’s Thread”, which inspired the Ancient Cistern dungeon in Skyward Sword.
The beginning of the story has Buddha walking through paradise (heaven), before coming across a pond. The pond is filled with crystal clear water, and covered with water lilies/lotuses. As Buddha gazes further into the pond, he begins to see the depths of hell.
Sound familiar? “Azura is walking through Hoshido, before coming across a lake. The lake is filled with crystal clear water, and when she gazes into the lake she sees the fallen kingdom of her birth. Valla, the kingdom associated with water lilies/lotuses in the game, has been turned into hell itself.”
This association loses its meaning a bit when the comparisons to hell are a bit toned down, as well as when the Buddhist inspirations were kind of supplanted in favor of Greek renames. It’s not supremely important to the plot as a whole, but it’s something interesting I wanted to bring up.
-In the JP version, while explaining what happened in Valla, Azura eventually says “Using the art of manipulating people’s souls, he (Hydra/Anankos) made the people kill each other.” This bit of the people killing each other was cut in localization.
Chapter 12
-In the JP version, when Corrin asks Flora if she knows anything about dragons, Flora says “Sorry, I don’t know…The ancestral dragon of the Ice Clan has already perished and isn’t part of the legend. I don’t know what role it plays, sorry…” Localization makes her response “I'm sorry, but I can't think of anything... They've been gone so long that we don't even have tales of dragons in the Ice Tribe. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more assistance...”
So, the JP version explicitly says the Ice Dragon is dead (I believe Fates’ second artbook mentioned this as well), whereas the localization only says the First Dragons have been gone for a long time.
Chapter 16
-There’s not really much of a problem that I have with what Ryoma says about Corrin “having leadership qualities at a young age” but I wanted to do comparisons regardless cuz the word choice might lead one to different conclusions. In localization, Ryoma says this:
Ryoma: Huh... So she told us the same thing... I don't think it's in Corrin's nature to lie. And there's a leadership quality about her that just attracts followers. I remember being jealous of her as a child, in fact. Even at such a young age, she displayed the characteristics of a ruler. Silly to be jealous of her, right?
In the JP version, Ryoma says this:
Ryoma: Oh... So, she told you the same thing. …Corrin isn’t one to tell lies. She’s been like that since childhood. She’s always genuine and honest... She has this mysterious appeal that draws people to her. Seeing my younger sister with the qualities of being a ruler... Honestly, it makes me feel envious. …What a ridiculous thing to say, right?
Again, I don’t necessarily have a problem with how it was localized, but some might. The localization version might have people think that Corrin somehow was a fantastic leader at such a young age, but JP is more clear that it was about the qualities she had at a young age that would be valuable as a leader.
Chapter 19
-A minor gripe. In the localization, Azura says that Anankos uses his magic to send Vallites to Nohr and Hoshido to stir up conflict. In the JP version, she says he uses magic, along with the help of a body of water. That’s why whenever you fight Vallites outside of Valla proper, there’s a body of water nearby; Hoshido’s lake (and the ponds shown in Hinoka’s CQ battle which are in the capital) for Chapter 5, the sea for BR chapter 11, the burning falls for BR chapter 21, and the city for Rev chapter 13. Similarly, the consequences of being a victim to the curse are described as “turning into sea foam” in the JP version. Localization as a whole kind of toned down how much water has an influence on the story.
Chapter 23
-Probably the pettiest gripe I have lol. As Arete is fading away from Azura’s arms, Azura has a different reaction in localization and Japanese. In localization, Azura says “Mother? Mother!” while a voice clip of her in-battle pain cries plays. In the JP, she says  “*Sob... Sob*…! Mother... Mother...!”, while a voice clip of her crying plays. Her crying voice clip I don’t recall hearing anywhere else.
This is one of the few times in the you get to see Azura express a heavy and heartfelt emotion, since her rough childhood caused her to remain guarded and stoic around everyone. The equivalents to this scene in other routes is her death scene in Birthright, and her crying with Corrin over Ryoma’s death in Conquest; a normally unflinching and aloof character breaking down is a rarity, and indicates that the cause of it is something to take note of for the character as a whole. Localization softened this aspect, and I take issue with it, despite it probably seeming trivial to most other people.
Chapter 24
-When Corrin is questioning the phantom Mikoto, an exchange happens. In localization, part of it goes like this:
Corrin: But this can't be... Are you truly my mother?
Mikoto: I am. Even as a puppet of Anankos, my spirit at least remains my own.
Corrin: I... I believe you.
In the JP version, it goes like this:
Corrin: It can’t be... …Are you really my mother?
Mikoto: Yes... I became an Invisible servant, controlled by the Invisible King... Even so, I am your mother.
Corrin:  …………
Again, a minor thing that I don’t personally have issue with, but replacing Corrin’s silence with an admittance of belief could make some believe she has “reverted” back to being too naïve.
Chapter 26
-While Gunter is relaying his past, an exchange happens. In localization, it goes like this:
Gunter: I ask myself that, every day. I cannot understand the minds of royals. To you all, we commoners are little more than pawns in your schemes... Or weeds to be killed on a whim.
Corrin: That's not true...
Xander: Is that how people view the royalty?
Ryoma: Such an impression would easily breed powerful resentment...
In the JP version, Corrin, Xander and Ryoma don’t say anything. They just remain silent.
Endgame
-Not a major problem so much as a general thing about the game, but I can think of like... at least three memes that Treehouse inserted into the localization. Now I like memes, but there is no better way to date your media nowadays. One of them was Kana’s “That’s dragon for I love you” which tbh, is kind of cute and isn’t the most well known meme so I guess I can let it slide. Another is Felicia saying “I had one job!” when she messes up in the dining hall, which isn’t that big of a deal since the dining hall is very optional.
The last one I can think of is why I put this specific grievance here, and it’s during Corrin’s speech before facing Anankos.
Corrin: We won't back down! This is my... This is our destiny! Ready your weapons! Fight for your friends! With the Seal of Flames... With the Fire Emblem on our side! We fight for our world!!
Yeah, she says “Fight for your friends” which is everyone’s favorite Ike line from Brawl. Now, this isn’t even a totally inaccurate translation either, but it kind of just... makes the moment funny for the player when it’s supposed to be commanding and serious I guess.
But yeah, not the most important issue by far, but something I’d thought to mention. Hell, it’s not even that bad compared to how they made Peri’s, Effie’s and Hisame’s quirks into exaggerated and tired jokes. And the Beruka-Saizo support. Never forget.
-When Azura and Corrin are by the lake and discuss the latter’s plans to rule, Corrin says this in localization:
Corrin: I'm going to make Valla a wonderful place! In honor of the true last king and for Queen Arete. And everyone who fought... I promise to make them all proud.
In the JP version, she says this:
Corrin: I’ll make the Invisible Kingdom (Valla) into a great land. For the previous monarch, Queen Shenmei (Arete)… And for all of my allies who fought beside me. I promise.
So, JP version only mentions Arete as the reigning monarch of Valla. Which makes sense, cuz unless there was some wild “keeping the bloodline pure” shenanigans in Valla, Arete being the Queen keeps in line with what we know about the rest of Valla’s history. Arete was royalty from birth, as was her sister Mikoto. Arete is the one who passed down Lost in Thoughts and the pendant to Azura.

@impossible-rat-babies tagged me in a “fictional characters that remind me of/i project onto my oc” meme (thank u owen uwu) so! naturally i went with kat because who else?? would i talk about???/s
she’s an interesting one to disseminate because she’s existed in my head in some capacity or another since i was like. six lmao. obviously this is just going off of her most recent iteration, which is ~vampire~. because she’s so established for me, this is more about vibes/similarities rather than direct creation inspiration.
yennefer of vengerberg (specifically the book/offical canon take on her character) - look i feel like this is just kinda obvious lmao. visually the wiki paraphrases her description as having “pronounced cheekbones, natural, slightly irregular eyebrows trimmed by hand and emphasized with charcoal, long eyelashes, and petite hands. Even in high-heeled shoes she wasn't tall, was beautiful but threatening...” yeah okay kinda cringe perhaps but also this is a power fantasy so. i can do what i want lmao. but yeah overall small, scary-hot, pale, cool eyes, great hair, that’s the visual i have in mind. and personality wise, it’s no surprise that yen was my favourite from the series & that you can see some of the same qualities in kat. i have a weakness for shrewd, self-aware powerful women with internal damage and soft spots for their very select group of loved ones.  (mod link.)
mia wallace. height clearly wasn’t a factor here lmao, but i think as far as colour palette and personality go you can see some connections. i wouldn’t call her a femme fatale or anything like that, but there’s something very much surly-yet-feminine about uma’s performance that i dig. also, the risk-taking behaviours and smoking motif.
deanna troi. alright so personality wise they. don’t have a ton in common actually. perhaps it’s just something about being a cool bi women with a thing for scruffy slightly dorky men lmao. deanna could just very well come to mind for the visuals. look at her hair! i need to know what was going on in the next generation’s styling department because i don’t think marina sirtis had a bad look for the entire 7 season run. oh, and i guess it’s also neat that both kat and deanna’s actress are greek.
miranda lawson. i’m noticing a pattern here. are you noticing a pattern here? we love dedicated career women who use their expertise and skillset to put up emotional walls and avoid vulnerability like the plague (until they can’t, that is) and who show they care in some endearingly bizarre ways. miranda and kat both share a protective love & dedication to their families, a tendency to scold rather than admit they were worried, the knowledge that they’re the hottest person in any given room, and oh my god issues with their fathers (or with kat, her sire) in spades. & once again, pretty dark haired woman with cool eyes.
liz sherman. with liz, i think the biggest draw is probably the complicated relationship we see between her and hellboy in the first film. i think that internally she probably pushes people away from a similar place, but her reasons are different than kat. also the way they isolate themselves kinda parallels too--liz seems the type who wants to just quietly recede, whereas if kat feels trapped she goes scorched earth. then again that does seem to be,,, a less literal version of what happens with liz so. maybe there’s more to that than i think.
helga sinclair. holy shit, we have our first outlier for hair colour! full disclosure, i don’t actually remember anything about this movie or her character. like, at all. but that said, the energy she gives off & how she carries herself? very much kat. also, matching under-eye beauty marks!
meg. attitude and vocal tone (in respect to how her voice is low; i don’t have a voice claim for kat right now, but this wouldn’t be how i picture her sounding). also the whole relationship with love and romance and opening yourself up to being with someone else is very apt.
beatrix kiddo. uma thurman has some very iconic roles that really solidified themselves in my brain here, doesn’t she? in this case, while kat’s revenge arc isn’t about a child, it is very much about killing a certain man. that single-minded ruthlessness is extremely her, much like her willingness to get her hands dirty and put in the work. also, the dedication--if you cross enough of her boundaries, kat will quite literally chase someone for the better part of a century until she feels they’ve atoned properly.

ok sorry but how many people do yall think rog has ever slept with cos i’m guessing four figures no lie
okay, i don’t normally respond to messages like this because, frankly, i dont really feel like its my place to speculate on roger’s sex life. Theres a difference between writing a fiction story with a character named after and inspired by him and discussing his actual personal life which i have no real knowledge about. What he gets up to in his free time is between him and the women he does it with. but i didn’t really feel able to ignore this one. please don’t take this as me telling you off or shutting you down or anything like that. If you want to speculate about roger’s body count thats up to you, go nuts with it. and i love when you guys message me and I don’t want to discourage you from feeling like you can talk to me or just send me your random thoughts or whatever about any subject. But I feel like I need to address why I disagree with this sentiment. Also so I can ask ya’ll to please stop asking me questions like this.
So firstly, just to get this out of the way. 1000 is a lot. even 100 is a lot. I think if rog had slept with 1000+ people he’d have a least a few illegitimate kids and probably would have been checked into rehab for sex addiction (not to mention STIs and such because lbr people in the 70s specifically probs werent the most careful especially if drugs were involved). I mean even if we were going to say Rog got lucky with a different woman after every show we wouldn’t reach 1000. According to google, Queen played around 700 shows in their entire career. If we add shows played by The Cross thats only another 67 odd shows (according to wikipedia).
now, i think there are 3 things that contribute to this idea of roger as especially promiscuous. 1. His attitude/demeanour/general way he sells himself. 2. the generally held conceptions about rock stars and rock star behaviour. and 3. what i’m going to call fandom dumbassery (but i mean that with a lot of love)
So lets start with the man himself. Roger Taylor is loud and opinionated and not particularly humble. He knows he’s talented and attractive though for at least some time he was a little self-conscious about how feminine he looked. He’s always up for a laugh, likes to party and has admitted to enjoying his drink and his women. He’s had kids with two different women, who’s relationships “overlapped”, and is currently married to a third. At least that’s the perception we can gleam from his interviews, behind the scenes videos, and other public appearances.
It’s easy to see how that image leads to accusations of being a womaniser and a cheater and basically a bit of a slut lmao. But here’s the thing. I think Roger, in part, markets himself that way. The thing is, if you look at his solo songs and the relationships he currently has with his kids and their mothers, and things other people have said about him/his relationships over the years, I think it’s fair to say he also has a bit of a romantic streak maybe? idk if thats the best way of describing it...he’s self confessed to not being a fan of marriage and the like but he’s not opposed to writing and singing love songs and seems to believe in ~love~ as a concept/power. He certainly cares deeply for those closest to him. Whether or not that translates to an agreement with monogamy I can’t say for certain. It’s hard to draw conclusions here because a lot of what we know of his personal life was fed to us through magazines and news paper gossip column articles and they were never looking for the truth, they were looking for scandal and sensationalism.
For instance the whole thing with the overlapping relationships. I think most people who have read anything about roger and dom and debbie realise that it’s not as cut and dry as “he was cheating with debbie and left dom for her” even though that was the story being sold by the press at the time. The reality (or at least the version closer to reality since obviously no one outside of them and whoever they were closest with knows all the nitty gritty details) is that rog and dom had already split when they got married. it was a marriage of convenience to make sure her and the kids would be looked after financially etc even after he’d moved out. So while it looked to the public like he married one chick and 30 odd days later was spotted with another, there really wasn’t anything untoward happening.  I’m not saying he never had casual hookups or one night stands and i’m not saying he never cheated, but I do think some of it’s been exaggerated, whether by him to encourage the rock star perception or by newspaper/magazine articles.
Now, obviously, we have stories of rog, particularly in the late 60s and into the 70s, being with multiple women. There’s that bit in the Interview with a Queen “Groupie” (which is a fantastic read and i defs recommend checking it out if you havent already) where she talks about roger being a chick magnet and says that, at the time, it was pretty common to sleep about. But, she also says she didnt notice him doing it more or less than anyone else and seemed to mostly be with Jo (his girlfriend at the time). This is the same Jo that got a mention in the Queen in 3D book (”i think we all had the feeling that these two were together for life, but it was not to be”). Conversely, we have that quote (which i cannot find rn but i’ll link it when i do) about roger sometimes having one girl upstairs while another waited in the garage for them to be finished. I think it was about Rog in the mid-late 60s in Truro but whatever. Obviously he wasn’t anywhere near celibate and it’s likely was sleeping with people outside of his relationship(s). But one has to assume that as he got older those kinds of antics stopped happening, at least as frequently.
There is one potential story that I remember reading somewhere along the way about Roger cheating on Debbie while she was pregnant. But, take that with a grain of salt because I can’t find the article again and also I think it was from like The Sun or something equally as rubbish. The press was notoriously always printing mean shit about the boys and that might have been another thing they published to create scandal. Even so, if we assume it’s legit that is still only 1 story. Not to throw him under the bus but Brian is the one with multiple confirmed affairs, who literally wrote songs about it all. So why is Roger the one with sleazy reputation?
This is where my second and third points come in. There is a pervasive idea about what it means to be a rock star. The whole trashing hotel rooms, sleeping with groupies, passing out drunk every night thing. And I’m sure that Queen was like that to an extent. I think it’s pretty common knowledge that all of them got up to shit on the road. Between innuendo laden interviews and songs, videos and accounts of their parties, stories CT has put online, and other stories like the one of Roger bringing out lines of coke as dessert when he was having dinner with motley crue. They definitely embraced the rock and roll lifestyle. And I think with Roger’s personality being what it is, it’s easy to link him to those traditional rock star tropes and say it was all true all the time. I also think Roger has done nothing to counter those beliefs. He’s been open about how he wanted to be a rock star since the minute he picked up a guitar, he’s labelled himself as a great lay in magazines, he’s joked about girls pulling their tits out over dinner in interviews (though he said he didnt take her home), he’s written songs like One Night Stand and Dirty Mind and Airheads which explicitly mention his preference for women and alcohol. I think it’s fair to say he’s kind of encouraged that view of himself. Whether it was just a side effect of being part of such a well known band and having such a boisterous demeanour/personality, or whether it was intentional as a version of promotion i don’t know. maybe a mix of them? I mean I’m sure it didn’t hurt sales and stuff. it’s the whole guys want to be him, girls want to be with him thing, right? Maybe that’s just me being cynical though lmao.
Anyway, the fandom brain has taken all of that and compressed it into memes and jokes about rog being the band slut. Which i’m not complaining about, lord knows i’ve made the same jokes and reblogged the same posts and used those tropes in my fics. They’re funny and lend themselves to interesting fic concepts. Plus, i think roger is the sort of person who would probably laugh about most of it. But it’s an idea that keeps feeding into itself through fandom, perpetuating what is probably a misguided view of his personal life.
Again, I am sure he’s had his fair share of fun and I’m not trying to make out that he was always perfect or whatever, but I don’t think he’s been with as many women as the popular discourse would imply and I certainly don’t think he’s in the 4 digit numbers.

Note
for the ask meme: 9, 32 & 49 please!
It’s only been 10 days... It’s only a guess which ask game you sent this for...! ^^; (I am basing it on the fact I read the questions and mused about them for this whole time so I am probably right about the game.) @nossbean
9. What are your favorite fanfics?
Oh no. Oh no. I could and should write POSTS upon POSTS about this.
But I haven’t, because I don’t have the energy to. So you get a cheat version of some of my random favorites from my last pages of my AO3 history. And few special shout outs.
@angel-deux-writes Worth is a wholeass gem and I haven’t commented yet, but I binged it basically today (with exception of first chapter) and I can’t stop yelling about it internally, because the way she says things!! She always has some of my favorite Brienne characterization I get so envious over. There is strength and pride in it, and vulnerability and fear and the acknowledgment that her self-loathing is unfounded yet how hard it is to defend yourself, even knowing all that. I could write essays about it and Angel’s stories in general. Anything by her is a treasure trove, truly.
@samirant Rush Me All Night Long is a fascinating concept, so very well executed and absolutely captivating. Makes me go slack-jawed with awe with how seamless it is. And beyond the craftsmanship of the story form itself, the contents are absolutely epic, too. Intrigue, growth of relationship, dash of humor that is right up my alley, lot of good other characters with their wonderful insights... Nothing to add or take away. Just great. And you KNOW you should check rest of her writing out, too. You won’t regret it.
@ajoblotofjunk is back with another subtly, but powerfully in-depth world story with Baby I Will. How many professions has she gotten degree in already? Because the way she weaves art of playing in bars is so organic. And oh, the connection between Jaime and Brienne... Electrifying, a storm that starts as static sparks as they brush past each other. And I can’t wait to watch it grow. (Also shout out to her absolutely beyond epic gift to me, Petrichor. Which is mindblowingly great and written at haste I cannot comprehend. It couldn’t be more tailored to me and I tear up just thinking about it.)
LadyRhiyana’s Stray Sparks II is the perfect example why I tell someone at least once a week “I wish I could LadyRhiyana this”. Her absolutely amazing skill to capture a whole setting, a whole world of emotions in sometimes as few as 5 to 10 sentences (and not the 30 word sort!) is just... Mesmerizing. I admire it so much and am typically absolutely enamored by her stories. Crossover is also in my history and I am absolutely head-over-heels for it.
@kurikaesu-haru Thirsty is the most endearing, captivating way to combine the two meanings of the word and I adore it to pieces. It’s fun and emotional and hot, and everything it could possibly need to be and then some, in best way possible. And her works contain more and more of gold mines, truly.
@firesign23 is a treasure, to this fandom and to me in particular, for many reasons. But her skill to devastate me with short stories is truly something else.  Odd Socks (link to one of my favorite of the lot, but do give them all a read if you haven’t!) is what I have in my history, but I rec her as a writer 1000%. Her prompt fills are always poignant and not shy of ache and I can only marvel at them all. But also how could I miss out on mentioning her two breathtaking recent stories for fic exchange? Hold Steady is a Journey without ever leaving Winterfell, but the miles traveled by weary, worried, longing hearts in it... Oof. And, of course, I have to mention by hearts and hands made fast because it’s for me and it made me cry real tears more than once (!) and actually yell in real life, like no other story. Real and complicated as the characters deserve to be told, painful and comforting, absolutely breathtaking in the prose... I could rant for days, truly. And truly, wherever you look at her work, you’ll find more of it.
@aviss Skin Deep is just gem, gem, gem. Am I biased because she wrote for me, in a sense? Maybe. But she ACED it in ways I can barely comprehend. Everything I could wish for in the concept is there and more. Sweet pining, absolute besottery and realistic realizations and then hot, earnest resolutions... What a gem. As is rest of her works, really!
32. Past or present tense?
I used to be such a past tense snob. Nothing else for me, no sir. But now I write almost exclusively in present tense. I can’t tell when the shift happened, I think when I was 20 or few years older than that, and I don’t know why, I think I read a good fic, like really good one, and also was trying to bypass my writer’s block by switching it up. And I found a certain freedom in it. A sense that it makes sense for me to go deeper, to be in present turmoil and wax poetics about it for few paragraphs. Because it’s currently happening, instead of retelling if something that has been. It freed me more in past tense, too, though.
It’s odd I don’t remember how and why the shift happened, almost makes me feel sad.
Nowadays I mostly write in past tense because I get too caught up in flashback sort of sequences and can’t make it grammatically correct anymore so I switch everything to past tense. Tomorrow (with you) is prime example.
49. Where do you draw inspiration from?
Anything. The other day, I was bitterly laughing with a friend I could write a piece about stain on floor, create whole 1-3k word story about someone thinking about the stain, etc. Doesn’t matter if it has funny shape or not, known origin or not.
Most often, though, it’s prompts, it’s song lyrics, it’s some kind of thought/belief I have for character that I want to express/see them through some kind of event in way I think they would. Sometimes, it’s specific setting or watching something. Like, there was one (1) almost head-kiss in a kdrama with secret identities and I created a whole 10k word worth story idea off of it... Sometimes, it’s honestly even just a dumb, dumb post. But yes, music/feelings/prompts, I’d say are the main thing.
And as for inspiration drawn for writing itself... That’s a difficult question for me, right now. In kindest, non-rambly way I’d probably say what other people have lived and written.
Send me fanfic question?<3

so, now that the AMA is out, I thought I’d make something inspired by things said in the AMA as well as the general dear hearts and discord chaos. from the AMA, “we make our own mythology”, and I’ve surrounded this quote with lyrics and jokes and references throughout. explanation of every reference below the cut!! this took me 6 hours I’m dying @joeybateyofficial
(if you want you can grab prints of a slightly updated version of this here! if the art is too difficult to see here’s a gdrive link for it. I also put it on twitter if y’all care to give it some love there too https://twitter.com/misscocochen/status/1254104159902711809)

bottle of wine + glass - reference J&M showing up to the discord drinking wine
HALT! - lyrics of wild blue yonder
so much fucking hair - lyrics of fair
beef and brambles + pie adjacent - reference to discord AMA where joey is answering what dessert TAD would be
chords? no - reference to AMA where joey says they won’t release chords
1953 - reference to AMA where madeleine says they met in 1953
be good to me / no no not I - that unwanted animal lyrics
stag skull - reference to album photoshoot for the horror and the wild, also subtle nod to everyone’s need for TAD tattoos
fairy lights - joey described THATW album as fairy lights and fire in an instagram post
DRINK WATER / NEVER! - as J&M were drunk during the AMA, mods prompted them to drink water after, with “NEVER!” as the response
fae realm - let’s face it, J&M are probably fae, and also something a lot of dear hearts say to new TAD fans (ex. “welcome to the fae realm!”)
croissant - the discord made jokes about joey pronouncing croissant the french way
ice cream + fork - no that’s not a pitchfork I just can’t draw forks reference to an instagram post where joey says that isolation is making him so mad he’s having ice cream with a fork
devils / tumblings / witchlings - multiple things joey called the gang on instagram before settling on dear hearts, thus why they’re crossed out
bitrate - bees taught joey about bitrate before the AMA
shoulder blades - those tender fucking lyrics in fair
SQUINTS - jackie. suspicion.
under the covers - lyrics of wild blue yonder

from Oxfam - reference to Pruning Shears, “got my shoes from Oxfam”
GIN - reference to joey and madeleine saying they were going to have gin after the AMA
lion king meme - the meme Dani made about discord being the shadowy place over there
can you feel the luuv? - reference to AMA where joey and madeleine said this multiple times in a row. also subtle lion king reference hence the location
wolf hall - a production J&M did together (the one they met on (?) not sure about that)
unemployed - reference to lyrics in Not Yet/Love Run
feral - because we’re all absolutely feral for TAD
the hexagonal box - I tried to draw the box from the King music video, not sure it worked
fret not - lyrics from the horror and the wild
sacred heart + nyts + and the candle we lit - oh boy this has LAYERS. like an onion. sacred hearts are a traditional tattoo, again a nod to everyone wanting TAD tattoos, including J&M as they mentioned in the AMA. sacred hearts, while referencing a specific religion and event, also have the meaning of divine love and its transforming power, which I think we’ve all experienced from TAD. the heart of the sacred heart is typically more rounded to look like an apple, Big Apple = New York, while “torch song” is its own thing torch, fire, you get it. “and the candle we lit” is lyrics from wild blue yonder, again here because of the fire of the sacred heart
ship with thought bubble lyrics - from Not Yet/Love Run, in a thought bubble because “sing me awake with a song about pirates” so dreams? idk what the logic was either. the lyrics making up the thought bubble are “sing me awake with a song about pirates / and I will try to harmonize / and sip the sunlight from your eyes”
it’s so good - we once spoke about Not Yet/Love Run in the general channel on discord, ended with multiple people only replying with “it’s so good”, and no one used the channel for hours to preserve this chain
slipknot - reference to the AMA where joey says he enjoys slipknot, also a reference to the only sound tardi makes in the recording which is to gasp “slipknot!” at this time

FAQ & Rules
Hello! Welcome to Monster Kink Meme!
This blog is a source for writing and art prompts for monsters & kinks. Pretty straightforward. Here’s a basic FAQ, mixed with our rules.
What is the point of this blog?
This blog is to generate writing and art prompts, similar to @write-it-motherfuckers and @writing-prompt-s, specifically for exophilia writers and artists.
Can we submit prompts?
Yes! Please do, either through the submission button or through asks. Asks are best for short prompts, or things that you want to keep anonymous. Submissions are best for longer prompts, and cannot be anonymous. We love getting prompts from folks. If you have a request for a story, please phrase it as a prompt. We aren’t a request blog, but a prompt blog.
Who can participate?
Anyone over the age of 18.
How can we participate?
Other than submitting prompts, if you see a prompt that inspires you, write or draw something and reblog it with the original prompt. Also, tag liberally.
Art submitted cannot be anonymous and must be from either the artist who created it or posted with permission from the artist who created it. Do not repost someone else’s art without their permission. This includes using it in moodboards (those collages at the top of stories.)
I see you suggest genders/monsters. Do I need to use those?
Mod prompts will sometimes have suggested genders & monsters. Those are totally optional and can be ignored if something else inspires you.
Submitted prompts that include requested monsters or genders should be considered mandatory, since people submitting those are setting up specific situations they’d hope to see.
Do I need to use a specific tense or point of view? [x]
No! The exophilia community does a lot of writing from second person present tense as a stylistic thing, but that doesn’t mean you should limit yourself to that. Write what feels comfortable to you. If that’s third person, write that! If it’s past tense, then that’s fine, too!
Can I write about sexy stuff? Kinky stuff? Polyamory?
Yes! We leave our prompts open, but if something you write takes a sexy turn, or features extra kinks, or multiple partners, that’s totally fine by us. (As long as it abides by the rules below re: what we don’t allow.) We love that stuff, it’s just that a lot of what we’ve gotten so far has been sweet rather than spicy.
Just make sure you TAG APPROPRIATELY. Use the citrus scale, tag for content (anything that people may want to know about before choosing to read your story), and follow the content rules. (We want consent, no incest, no underage sex, and no bestiality. Beyond that, it’s fair game.)
Where do I find monster inspiration?
We’ve got a post here. The short version? Everywhere! Pop culture. Cryptids. Mythology. Dungeons & Dragons. Video Games. Movies. Your Imagination.
I need writing help. Do you have advice?
We have a post here. It’s got advice from a bunch of us about how to start, how to continue. How to do the thing. The biggest thing is just to go for it. You’ll never get better without doing.
If a prompt has already been “filled,” can someone else write about the same prompt with a different story?
Yep! We’d love to see as many iterations as you guys can think of! (Someone asked Aelia about it, there’s a post.)
Are there any format expectations/requirements for stories?
Generally we like to see something that lists Characters, Content, and Rating, and a Read More link when appropriate.
Characters tells people who/what is in your story. Reader & monster genders would be listed here.
Content would be where you put any tags (see the next question) and warn people about anything that may squick or trigger, as well as any acts or situations that they may be interested in, or which they may wish to avoid. This allows people to make good choices for themselves.
Rating is based on our Citrus Scale.
If your story is more than about 6 paragraphs, or it’s explicit or potentially triggering, we love to see you use a Read More/Keep Reading tag  after the first paragraph or two so when we reblog it people don’t have to scroll forever.
How should I tag?
There’s two spots we love to see tags!
1: Ahead of your story. If you put tags before your story, your readers can make informed choices about what you’ve written, and whether it’s a good/safe choice for them. This is where we want to see tags about any kinks, sex acts, or content warnings for readers.
2: In the tumblr tags. This is where you put things to make your story searchable, so DO NOT put NSFW or “sexual” tags here, as it will make the post inaccessible by searching. This is where all the tags about citrus scale, monster types, reader & monster genders, pairings, and fandoms that apply should go. Here’s a post about unsearchable tags. Using these tags will make your post “disappear” and we’d hate to see that happen.
We have a handy guide to how we want to see the citrus scale used for stories that people hope to see on our blog.
Overall, USE CONTENT WARNINGS. We cannot stress this enough. We want readers to be able to make informed choices about what they read to avoid “squicks” and triggers.
Should we use the “teratophilia” tag?
We would prefer you didn’t for two reasons: A: teratophilia is no longer a searchable tag, and B: given the original definition of the word (sexual attraction to deformed, disfigured, or monstrous people and a form of paraphilia, I.E. attraction to the disabled), the moderators of this blog feel it is both inaccurate and insensitive.
Most (not all, but most) monster-lover writers now use the much more accurate term exophilia (the love of extraterrestrial, robotic, supernatural, or otherwise non-human life-forms) to describe our work. Robophilia (sexual attraction to robots) and xenophilia (sexual attraction to aliens) is still permissible.
Topics we don’t allow/won’t post/reblog:
Real people (like actors, musicians, and other celebrities)
Incest (including step/adopted family members)
Non-con/dub-con (including rape-play)
Whump (”Hurt/Comfort” fics that focus more on the hurt and less on the comfort. Not to be confused with standard Hurt/Comfort or BDSM)
Bestiality (creatures that don’t possess the mental capacity to consent)
Under-aged/pedophilia (with the minimum age being 18)
Everything else it totally fine.
If you plan on writing anything along these lines using our prompts, please make it a separate post, and do not tag us in it. This is because we want our notes to be relatively safe for people to look through, but also because we don’t want to be associated with things that violate our policies.
We would also like to point out once more that this is a prompt/prompt fill blog, not a request or roleplay blog. If your story/submission does not meet our rules and is NOT a prompt/prompt fill, we will not be posting it on our blog.
Do not plagiarize books/movies/video games for your prompts.
We’ve seen this cropping up a lot recently. We will not post them if we spot them, and if we miss it and someone points it out, it’ll be deleted. [x]
General Expectation for Respect/Sensitivity
We didn’t want to phrase this one as a question necessarily but we wanted to make it clear that on the whole, not only do all of the mods of this blog embrace the idea of an open community, but we endorse appreciation over appropriation, as well as sensitivity and respect when working with creatures from races and cultures that are not your own, or sexualities, or genders which you do not identify with. We love representation, we just want to see it done well.
Mod Traveler has a post on her blog that sums it up well and includes links to educational resources for people looking for more info, but you should be able to reach out to any of us for more information about what we mean.
What are “theme days”?
We (sometimes) have two theme days a week where we request prompts that fit a specific theme. Prompts that come in on those days which fit those themes get posted immediately instead of getting queued.
Trope Tuesday is all about our favorite tropes with monsters mixed in. First Date Friday is about the trials and tribulations of first dates. We currently do them weekly, but that’s subject to change.
What are tropes?
We’ve had a few questions come in about this! We’ve answered it here, and here. But the short version is; storytelling shorthand. Common “cliche” situations that readers recognize, and may have set expectations for. (”Oh no someone is getting married and I need a date!” etc.)
I saw you reblog something from [other prompt page]. Why?
So, we reblog from other prompt pages because we are trying to keep enough prompts in the queue to have stuff posting with consistency. We’ve been trying to share relevant prompt posts from other places (with permission from the other blogs, in every case) to ensure there’s enough content.
I wrote a story but you didn’t reblog it!
If it didn’t violate any of our rules, we just might have missed it in the notes, or it wasn’t about monsters. Please feel free to tag us, or message a member of the mod team directly. :)
Will you post a story I submit to you?
Only if it’s a direct response to one of our prompts, and/or it involves monsters. We’re a monster prompt blog. :)
Do you have a masterlist?
We do! We have one for Fills and one for Prompts.
I don’t like something I saw posted, what do I do?
We can’t control what people post in response to prompts posted here, but we won’t ever reblog something that doesn’t fit the spirit of our blog, and we’ll never post prompts that go against our rules.
With the exception of our explicitly not allowed list, we abide by the “your kink doesn’t have to be my kink, and that’s okay” rule. The tl;dr version of this is “if it doesn’t violate the rules, but you don’t like it, just keep scrolling.”
If you feel it does violate our rules but it slipped through the cracks somehow, please send one of the mods a message, and we will help you out with it.
That’s it! We’ll update as needed! Have fun and get creating!

One of my writing pals contacted me yesterday: he was trying to write a story for The Reclamation Project but wasn’t happy with the results he was coming up with. In an effort to get his creative juices flowing, I sent him a link to a Pinterest board I had created to help me get into the right frame of mind.
“Maybe I’ve been going around this wrong,” he replied. “I’ve been trying to pull story ideas out of thin air, but that’s proving hard. I used to go looking at pictures, but it felt like a crutch…”
I’m here to tell you, when it comes to creating story ideas, there’s no such thing as a crutch. There are only tools!
Inspiration is a Fickle Mistress
Sometimes a story will leap nearly fully-formed into your head, and the biggest obstacle is making sure to get it all written down before you forget it. And those times when the Muse Burns Within You are amazing!
…But unreliable.
If you want to get somewhere as a professional writer, you need to be able to create stories on demand. While “writer’s block” is a very personal experience, in my own case it’s often a matter of “perfect being the enemy of good.” Writing as a deliberate craft is less like dictating the voice of the muse, and more like slopping a giant blob of clay onto the wheel and spinning it into a useful shape — and since the final product is going to be vastly different from that original lump of clay anyhow, you can use whatever you need to get it started. Write about your cat. Take a story out of the news, flip the gender of all parties involved, and set it on a space station or in ancient Babylon. All you need is a starting point!
Here are some starting points I like to use…
Image Boards
A picture can be worth a lot more than a thousand words. Looking at an evocative image and asking yourself, “What’s happening here? Who are these people? How did this come to pass?” might be all you need to get the ball rolling.
I’ve already mentioned Pinterest. It’s not the best for all applications (it’s terrible about original sources, just for starters), but just in terms of finding neat pictures to look at it’s a good start. Tumblr is another source that’s easy to search by keyword. Want to write steampunk? Check out Steampunk Tendencies. Need a very specific “anime + elves” vibe? Do a keyword search for “anime elves.” If you can think of something, there’s probably at least one and possibly several blogs devoted to it.
The point of these boards is not to give you “the thing” you’re going to write; just lifting someone else’s creative work and repackaging it as your own would be a crutch, and worse. The point of these boards is to give you suggestions for moments, or ideas, or possibilities, that you will then weave into your own stories. An old pulp sci-fi painting I found on Pinterest gave me an arresting visual image; when I combined that with my own characters and plot it became a 15,000-word story.
Story Prompts
Story prompts are everywhere, from games like Rory’s Story Cubes or Storymatic, to NaNoWriMo Word Wars, to Writer’s Digest. One friend of mine sometimes uses Tarot readings to create story outlines.
I generally find prompts to be very hit-or-miss; if I don’t have a single notion in my head, the phrase “When you come to a fork in the road, take it!” is not going to be enough by itself. However, a prompt combined with something else — a character idea, for instance, or a relationship dynamic I want to explore — can sometimes be just enough to prod me into the right direction.
Fanfic
Here’s my secret, Cap: almost all my fic is fanfic.
Everybody knows about 50 Shades by now, right? My novel Sky Pirates of Calypsitania began its life as a notion for an AU fic about “Rainbow Dash, Airship Pirate,” even if the final story doesn’t have a little pony in sight.
Fanfic is a massive creative energy generator (well deserving of a Hugo award). One of its most powerful features is that, by piggy-backing onto established properties, it allows writers to cut to the chase in their story creation. The characters are already established and the rules of the universe are already written, so all the writer has to do is figure out what happens and write that.
Remember, however, that we’re talking about tools to get you started here, not finished stories. If all you do is shave the names and serial numbers off of a fanfic and repackage it as a new story, people are gonna notice. Fanfic can give you the bones of an outline, but you still have to go back and do the work of establishing your characters, and building your world, before you can truly call the work your own.
Genre-Mashing
This is a long-established practice, and a great one. Take two very different things you love, mash ’em together, and see what sparks fly. Put Casablanca in space and you get Babylon 5. Put a roaming samurai in the old west and you get A Fistful of Dollars. Put British snark and a touch of sentimental romance into The Book of Revelation and you get Good Omens.
There’s a lot of crossover between this category and fanfic “alternate universe,” “fix-fic,” and “X but Y” are all well-traveled fanfic paths. You could make a cogent argument that Lord of the Rings is “Macbeth Meets Der Rings Des Nibelungen,” and Tolkien did all right for himself.
Writing to Market
And of course, there’s always just finding out what an editor wants, and writing that. For The Perfect Warrior, I was given the title and back cover blurb, and told to write an adventure that matched it.
In some ways, this is just a leveled-up version of a writing prompt. Cruising sites like Manuscript Wishlist, or checking out upcoming anthologies in your favorite genres, can not only spark cool story ideas, but has the added bonus of giving you a target market and a deadline!
Don’t Be Precious
Whatever method you use to get words flowing, the important thing to remember is that writing any story is a process and a journey. Give yourself permission to create something rough, and get writing! In the words of Tim Powers, “The first draft is supposed to be crap.” Where would the skill of the sculptor come in, if the blob of clay was perfect when it was first plopped down?

ANSWER THE ENTIRE 'GET TO KNOW ME MEME' YOU COWARD
I AIN’T NO COWARD
1) Favorite MoviesI prefer animated ones but I really did enjoy Night at the Museum! All 3 of them in fact!
2) Favorite Animated moviesLion King, Ice Age (all lol), FOP: School’s Out Musical, Ferngully, Epic, Nightmare Before Christmas aaaaannnnndddddd Wakko’s Wish >:3
3) Favorite TV showsFairly OddParents, Teen Titans, Amazing World of Gumball, Generator Rex, Watership Down, Pokemon, Animaniacs etc
4) Favorite RelationshipsI’m assuming like otps and stuff, yes? I don’t really care for shipping, like, at all heh but I do like some forms of Link&Zelda, Rapunzel&Flynn, Fox&Krystal and Cosmo&Wanda. But I’m not really into them heh
5) Favorite BrotpHmm this is like, the platonic version of otp if I remember correctly. Now this is stuff I really love but idk if I have a top fav. Hmm… I go nuts over any good friendship or family stuff but I think Beast Boy and Raven would be the brotp? It’ll probably change but they just really seem like the best of friends and I love how much they care for one another, but it doesn’t really feel romantic at all (plus BB loves Terra). It just feels so nice and natural. That’s the kind of shit I’m here for
6) Favorite Anime/MangaI’d say Pokemon, but since I’ve already mentioned it earlier, I’ll put Fullmetal Alchemist instead. Both versions of the anime to! I do prefer Brotherhood, but ‘03 is quite amazing as well ^_^
7) Favorite Video gamesStarFox, Smash Bros, Legend of Zelda, Cuphead, Spyro (classic and legend), Night in the Woods, Pokemon and FNaF >:3
8) Favorite ComicsI don’t really read comics, like, at all. But the Warriors series has some and I liked them!
9) Favorite BooksSince I don’t really read outside of Warriors (save for 2 shorter series), its hard to say what my favorite book is since I look at it as one big story. But if I have to choose? I think I really love the final book in the first arc, the Darkest Hour
10) Favorite QuotesI like silly quotes, so I’ve got nothing inspirational here. I tend to favor a lot of PBG and StarFox stuff, but I’ll also randomly repeat a bunch of stuff for humor (mostly to myself tho). Right now, specifically, I’m really enjoying the “oh my god! they killed Kenny!” and “I’m poopsie, ma!” from South Park
11) Favorite Female charactersMidna (Zelda), Mangle and Bonnet (FNaF), Miyu (StarFox), Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Applejack (MLP), Bluestar, Ivypool and Hollyleaf (Warriors), Temmie (Undertale), Slappy Squirrel (Animaniacs) and Mae Borowski (there are some others but eh, I like boys more lol)
12) Favorite Male charactersYakko and Wakko Warner (Animaniacs), Timmy Turner (FOP), Gumball (TAWOG), Fox McCloud (StarFox), Link (LoZ), Ness (Earthbound), literally every Bonnie in existence and some Foxys (FNaF), Cuphead, Robin (both FE and TT), Brock (Pokemon), Choo Choo and Top Cat, Felix the Cat and Goku and Gohan (Dragon Ball). I have so many more for this but we’d be here for a long time xD
13) Favorite ActorsI don’t care for actual actors so I’m just gonna do voice actors for this and the next question lolTom Kenny, Rob Paulsen, Greg Cipes, and Jeff Bennett
14) Favorite ActressesTara Strong and Grey DeLisle. There is another one, but I cannot think of her name to save my life right now
15) Favorite Musical artistsI like Mandopony lol
16) Favorite Musical bandsLinkin Park, Three Days Grace and Hollywood Undead :3
17) Favorite Music videosI don’t watch music videos xD
18) Favorite YoutubersPeanutButterGamer, nigahiga, Markiplier, SpaceHamster and Jacksepticeye

THE POSITIVE & NEGATIVE; mun & muse - meme.
tagged by: stolen tagging: everyone
fill out & repost ♥ this meme definitely favors canons more, but i hope oc’s still can make it somehow work with their own lore, and lil’ fandom of friends & mutuals. multi-muses pick the muse you are the most invested in atm.
My muse is:   canon / oc / au ( dependent on verse ) / canon-divergent / fandomless
Is your character popular in the fandom?  YES / NO.
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK.
Is your character considered strong in the fandom? YES / NO / IDK.
Are they underrated?  YES / NO.
Were they relevant for the main story?  YES / NO / MAYBE
Were they relevant for the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG.
Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO / MAYBE
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL. ( it honestly depends who you ask, and when in the story it is. )
How strictly do you follow canon?  — I try to stick to it, but I do take quite a few liberties mainly with the fact that Link’s training as a knight did not just happen when he pulled the sword. He doesn’t have a sister, and the picture from Creating a Champion is his cousin and Uncle rather than his father and sister. Other than that the liberties I take are derived from canon events.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  — I don’t play him how the fandom interprets him. And I know that may seem like a bad thing but its not. As someone who suffers from amnesia ( for a completely different reason than Link ) I come at it from a different perspective than “oh his whole personality changed cause he can’t remember anything. I play him more controlled and looking for a balance of what he lost and what he has found because going to far one way or the other is destructive to him, he wants that balance and has yet to find it. I don’t stray away from the fact that he does not want to burden people no matter what it is, and instead wants to help people, Link has a problem with saying no, its like not in his vocabulary, and that can be unhealthy especially when it comes to things he blames himself for. He is so complex and I try to make that be shown, I don’t want to slip into just seeing him as one way or the other because he is not feral, but at the same time he isn’t completely stone faced either.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  — I mean people could see him as just one thing. And honestly not gonna lie the fandom kinda does. They common phrase I see describing this version of Link is “wild gremlin child” or “feral” and that doesn’t interest me because in my opinion no matter your play style whether you are speed running the game or just playing casually nothing ever exudes that kind of energy. I don’t find that interesting at all, and I find it a gross over simplification of his character, which the fandom at large tends to disagree with me on.
What inspired you to rp your muse?  — I love fantasy and the game. I love Breath of the Wild immensely. I have always loved Zelda but our games when I was a kid were my sister’s and I was not allowed to touch or mess with her stuff including her gameboy and games and shit. So Breath of the Wild was my first real experience with a Zelda game. I fell in love with Link and the story, and people say this game has no story and i disagree just because it is told retroactively does not mean there is not a story at all. Also its called the Legend of Zelda, Link has never been who the legends are about he is just the hero. So the Zelda focused story really intrigued me, but what intrigued me more were just the nuggets we got about Link. And I just had to expand on that and him.
What keeps your inspiration going? — Playing the game, talking to people, Watching zelda tubers even if I disagree with some shit they say. Always trying to come up with my own ideas and ways to make my version of this Link stand out and be different from other Links but other versions of this specific Link. I don’t want my version to be a copy, or even necessarily the exact same as what the game wants us to think.
Some more personal questions for the mun.
give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO. ( I don’t think I do. I wish I did, and certainly try, but i always see people who just do him better. )
Do you frequently write headcanons? YES / NO. ( Well I fucking try! lol. )
Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES / NO. ( I want to, I desperately want to. Particularly regarding Link and the Sheikah and learning their techniques. But I also don’t want to encroach on other players because what if someone one day decides to write a person I wrote a drabble about or with? )
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day?  YES / NO.
Are you confident in your portrayal?   YES / NO ( As stated above, no. I wish I was. But every time I post a headcanon or reply I suddenly feel that I wrote everything wrong. I disagree with how Wild (my Link) is portrayed alot, and I know my version isn’t popular because of that, and it sucks. I know their are other better versions of my muse cause I see them, and I am so happy for them, but it also means I get shy about anything in regards to my portrayal. )
Are you confident in your writing?  YES / NO. ( And to think I want to be a lawyer with my sentence structure. )
Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO. ( Kinda yeah )
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  — Sure. Why not? The only thing is if you’re going to be hyper critical be nice about it. If you’re just gonna send hate that’s not criticism. And let me explain, you are allowed to dislike my portrayal of Link, giving me reasons why you dislike my version, and what would make you like him is not hate. Saying that my version of Link sucks, is hate.
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?  — PLEASE SEND THEM TO ME!
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  — Of course. I write Wild pretty controversially especially within the popularlized Linked Universe, and stuff, so if someone disagrees with why I have certain headcanons I’d love to know why. Generally it will probably come down to Master Works or something. But sill I’d love to know why.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  — I mean its fine. Its my portrayal, I am allowed to write Link how I want. Will I be down in the dumps about it for a bit? Yeah, probably, but who wouldn’t. The thing is I am a people pleaser so someone disagreeing with my portrayal will upset me a bit, but the thing is I’ll be upset because I want to make them happy, but I also want to stay true to my writing beliefs and how I write Link and how I think Link should be played. I don’t like that coming into conflict. It would be me more upset at myself for not pleasing someone than someone disagreeing with my portrayal.
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  — Ignore it and move on. Well I would try. But hopefully if you hate Link you’re not writing with him.
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  — Yes. Please if you want to correct my grammar please do. I take no offense. I don’t proofread my shit. So like go ahead you little grammar person. Be happy. I know my grammar is shit.
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  I like to think so. But at the same time I get the feeling people are scared to talk to me ooc cause I have very few ooc interactions with people. I am not good at simple like “how’s your day” conversations. I do not do well with small talk, and that may make me seem closed off. But come screaming at me about a zelda theory or about your character and I will scream right along with you.
that’s about it, congrats for filling out!

Ask a writer!
tagged by @mysillylittlesoapbox (yes I do still write fic... sometimes :p I’m afraid it’s all Gotham now though!) ...I don’t usually do memes about my writing though so, this should be...interesting...
1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?
my name is holly, holly leaves are a thing, I wanted to just be ‘hollyleaf’ but it was already taken so I figured ‘well hey, I’m also small...’ and voila! (no, I’m so sorry, but the Warrior Cats series was not involved at any point, I still haven’t read them and only know a character has my username, or a version of it, because of all the asks I keep getting about it :P)
2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/favorites, follows/subscriptions, visitor hits, kudos)
So I had a quick glance at AO3 and this is something it looks like WAAAAY too much effort for my lazy ass to figure out, plus I dunno how accurate the AO3 stats would be for my stuff anyways because I only very recently put all my fic on there after having most of it posted (and therefore commented on and otherwise interacted with) solely over at LJ for years and years...
I would imagine it’s Imitating Life (spn, deancas), because that’s the one I remember getting the most feedback for. So I’ll just go with that!
3. What is your FFnNet/AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it?
It’s the same as my tumblr one. Because it’s me and I already had the image saved in an appropriate size. I know, dull right?? (back on LJ I was OBSESSED with finding and/or creating SO MANY different icons to convey different moods and whatnot - they were basically an oldschool version of reaction gifs I guess - but on any other platform I’ve been just... meh about the icon thing... idk!)
4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters?
@vampirebillionaire has been a regular for my Gotham stuff, notable for jumping ship with me into foxma :) (well not jumping... simultaneously enjoying :p), for which I am profoundly grateful xx but generally my fic style and content is a bit... eclectic I guess? so no, no one who is super regular
5. Is there a fanfic that you keep going back to read again and again?
Of my own? Nah. Well... not AGAIN AND AGAIN like on the regular. I HAVE re-read my stuff OF COURSE :p But usually it’s me re-reading previous parts of a series/set to get the feel for the story/characters again as I write new stuff. Though admittedly I have re-read Imitating Life more than most probably, to check it still reads okay.
As to other authors’ fics - I must confess that I read less and less these days, so there is def not a single one I constantly return to.
I have, however, re-read a few by depthsofgreen since I got into Gotham, as well as some by rissalf and silentsinger
Back in the day there was this one spn last unicorn AU I used to re-read the night before each premiere, because it was a deliciously angsty way to get me in the mood for a new season and pass the time while waiting - particularly notable because AUs are not really my thing, so it was an interesting choice for me to keep returning to! Alas I have lost my link to it however :( Should anyone know the one I mean drop me a line! (Cas was the unicorn, obvs, Dean was the Prince, Sam was Schmendrick, Anna was Molly and Meg was Fortuna)
6. How many stories are you subscribed to? How many do you have bookmarked?
I have ONE (1) story bookmarked - because it is a WIP I am following (and I just learnt how to bookmark the other month)
...what even is subscribing and how is it different??
7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most?
None at all if possible. Although most of my fics end up being Canon Divergent in the end ofc they are generally canon compliant (based on my interpretation of the canon anyways) at the time of writing... Sometimes canon changes things while I am in the middle of writing stuff though ofc (*shakes fist at Gotham right now*), in which case I will unavoidably be writing something knowingly Canon Divergent/What If.
(aside - I tried to write an spn x-men AU once, but I got bored very quickly... full on AUs are just not me!)
8. How many people are subscribed and bookmarked to you in total? (you can view this on the stats page)
OH THERE’S A STATS PAGE?
*checks*
K - 34 subscribers and 423 bookmarks (whoa that seems a lot??)
hey there’s graphs and stuff with your top five fics based on hits too - that’s pretty cool - my top is in fact Holding On and Letting Go... probably because it was one of my last big spn fics and one of the first I published on AO3...
9. Is there something you’d like to write about but are afraid of people judging you for it? (Feeling brave? If so, share it!)
No... I mean... I don’t think so? If there ever has been it’s passed me by and I’ve forgotten about it.
...for a hot minute I was into Eddie/Isabella in Gotham, and that plot was ofc (understandably) received VERY POORLY by the fandom, so I may have at one point been hesitant to explore that idea (and the related Ozzie/Eddie/Izzy thoughts I had) because of that... but I never got as far as wanting to actually WRITE anything that I recall so... I guess not really?
10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.
There’s a couple of dumb little grammatical things I wish I was better at remembering - like when it’s ‘passed’ and when it’s ‘past’ or when it’s ‘effect’ and when it’s ‘affect.’ Because I forget and have to look it up Every.Damn.Time!
11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?
Well, the ship I’ve written most for is deancas - so it’s def ‘popular ships’ I write most! (though I would like to point out that it WASN’T ONE when I STARTED :p).
I’m not opposed to writing rarepairs as well however (she says, in the middle of a huge Gotham rarepair series!). I just write... whatever I’m enjoying most at the time.
12. How many stories have you posted on FFNet/AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)?
I’ve got 39 works up on AO3. Never published on FFNet. Probably got a few little things that I’ve only ever published on tumblr (like my cracky spn/WtNV crossover :p), so total number published across the board is more like 40ish...
13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program?
(not counting the abandoned spn x-men AU that will remain forever unfinished) Just one. I CANNOT work on more than one fic at a time.
14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head?
In my head (my stories are never especially complex after all). Once I’m stuck into a fic though I do tend to start creating bullet points below the main text of certain things that are coming next - like specific lines or phrases/metaphors I might think up as I go that I want to make sure I include, or the order of certain scenes if there is a series of short ones on the way, or sometimes points with question marks if I haven’t quite decided on something (eg. ‘have Eddie take his hat off here or wait until Ozzie smiles at him?’ that kind of thing...)
15. Have you ever co-authored a story?
No. I came CLOSE to co-writing a DCBB with the lovely @takadainmate YEARS AGO but we never quite made it work (I got a distracted by involving Balthazar in a subplot and went on my own tangent, we had trouble even getting together to discuss it, the deadline started looming and eventually we wisely close to call it a day!).
For a while there were VAGUE murmurings about returning to the idea... but the plot involved Dean and Cas getting trapped together in Purgatory you see aND THEN SEASON 8 HAPPENED!! So we decided to let canon run with it instead :P
16. How did you discover FFNet/AO3?
While I don’t use FFNet and don’t even read stuff there now, I did used to read fics on it early on. I discovered it while searching for info on my very first TV obsession Due South and was DELIGHTED to find a place full of stories about this thing I loved but had no new content for at the time :)
AO3 I remember being talked about and used a little by my LJ crowd, which is how I heard of it. I didn’t start using it myself until recently when I realised it had very much become the go-to hosting site used by tumblr fic writers.
17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on FFNet/AO3?
Nah.
18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?
...my personal readers? As in, not the general name for the various fandoms (like ‘spn family’ or ‘Gotham fam’), but for the people who read my fic specifically?
No... that seems... weird...?
19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?
Actually... no... no one specific. Just... reading lots of fiction by lots of different writers, fic writers included, is what inspired/encouraged me to take a crack at it myself I suppose.
20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?
Do not listen to me!
21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?
Um... both I suppose. Only... my plotting isn’t really... plotting.
Because I just... daydream, you know? And after a bit I’ll realise that I’m coming back to one particular daydream more often than another. And adding to it. And adding to it. Until I’ve got something at least vaguely coherent. At which point I make a decision as to whether I like the scenario enough to write it down or not and if I do, well, it’s already pretty much there and fully formed in my head, so no additional ‘plotting’ necessary (just the ironing out and researching of a few details).
But while I’m daydreaming... well that’s me ‘figuring it out as I go’ I guess.
22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?
My first foray into writing fic was with a Clex re-write of S05 Smallville. It ended up being a sprawling, much too ambitious multi-chapter thing I had no hope of ever finishing. But hey, it kept me out of trouble :p
Anyways, I was part of a sci-fi society at Uni at the time I was writing and each of us in the group developed these different fictional versions of ourselves over the course of our time together... because we were a sci-fi society and it was fun! And I thought it would be a laugh if, for one chapter, I put all of us into my SV fic. So I did (I made us all kryptonite infected characters who lived at Lex’s secret 33.1 facility - if any SV fans are reading) and prefaced the chapter with some disclaimer about how I was sorry if this part was a bit too self indulgent or ‘mary-sue’ or whatever, but that I couldn’t resist doing it for my friends, and that things would get back to normal next chapter.
And generally it was fine - I didn’t have many readers anyway :p
But long LONG after the fact, when I had written many other chapters since, I got a comment on this one chapter from someone saying that they felt my self-insert characters came across as too obviously self indulgent and were unnecessary and that I shouldn’t have written them in.
And you know, it was a fair call. But since I’d actually prefaced the chapter with myself saying that’s EXACTLY what they were, it seemed a bit odd to me that this person would bother making a point of the issue. And to compound confusion - this person had actually already commented POSITIVELY on the chapter when I first posted it, so their comment read something like ‘I’ve been re-reading this and on consideration ACTUALLY I think you should know that...’
So... that was a bit odd. Not really bad, but notable enough that it’s stayed with me! Since I was many many chapters along in the story at that point though it was easy enough to just nod and shrug and move on.
I’m lucky in that I’ve never received any actual scathing or horribly negative comments otherwise. I like to think I’d be thoughtful and philosophical about any serious criticism I might receive...
23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)
Hmmm. Exposition probably. My focus is typically on a character’s emotion at any given time, but when the only thing happening is characters discussing what’s happening and when and why there’s not exactly much strong emotion involved you know? So I struggle, because it’s boring to write and I constantly fear I’m not describing/depicting it in a way that is interesting to the reader and blah blah.
(part of the reason I don’t often write complex stories anymore perhaps - less narrative means less exposition!)
(smut used to be hard... now it is less so... though that doesn’t mean I think I’m good at it now! I don’t think I’ll ever shake the fear that my smut is actually cringe-worthy...)
24. What story(s) are you working on now?
Just The Fox and the Scorpion :)
25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?
No. Like I say above - I CANNOT work on more than one fic at a time. How do people do that??? I bow to you all!
I have in the past paused in the middle of longer spn fics (like my DCBBs) to knock out some quick ‘finished in the span of an evening’ FICLETS, usually in response to specific happenings in canon (like when Gabriel died and I just HAD to type something up as an outlet). But I don’t think that’s really quite what this question means? Because those aren’t projects OR stories, they are just... SCENES, you know? Also - I haven’t written a ficlet in FOREVER, so I’m not even sure I could do it anymore...
Having said this - I DO CONSTANTLY DAYDREAM. Which involves daydreaming multiple scenarios not exclusive to whatever fic I’m in the middle of. Some of which may well end up being part of the next fic I end up writing. But that’s hardly ‘planning’ I think? Because at that stage of things I’ll have no desire to make what I’m dreaming part of an actual story/fic.
26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?
Nah. I just write when I feel like it and keep going until I’m done.
If I’m writing for a challenge this changes ofc, because DEADLINES. So sometimes I’ve had to set goals because of that - usually it’s something vague though, like ‘you need to get to this point in the plot by tomorrow night Holly, come on!’ Nothing so regimented as a specific amount of time and/or words every day.
...generally when I’m in the middle of a fic I end up in a kind of... idk, natural momentum that pulls me on? Like there’s this constant FEELING in the back of my mind urging me to get back to the story. And not in a nagging guilt kind of way, in a ‘this is what I WANT to be doing right now’ kind of way.
Not that I end up easily writing every time I get back to the fic or anything! Sometimes I’ll get back to the page and just... be stuck, find I’m not in the mood or can’t think of the words or whatever. Which is frustrating because I still have that feeling of WANTING to continue the story, but I’ll know that I’m not in the right frame of mind so have to leave it for a bit (which can be anywhere from a few hours to a week). Generally the pull to keep writing draws me back in eventually though.
27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?
Goodness yes. I think if you’re writing regularly you’re just ALWAYS improving, aren’t you? Naturally my fic today is better than my first attempts, but likewise I think some of my Gotham fics are better than my spn fics in some parts. It’s a constant process isn’t it?
28. What is your favorite story(s) that you’ve written?
Imitating Life remains one of the fics I’m most proud of. Not only did the main story hold up well AND stick to overall canon (when it comes to Dean and Cas at least), so I think anyways, I also wove in a couple of subplots I very much enjoyed seeing through to the end. PLUS I really enjoyed all the meta nonsense, including messing about with the format to make it like look (a little bit) like a screenplay. So yes, that one will always hold a dear place in my heart :)
For Gotham I don’t think I’m ever gonna do better than We Are What We Are tbh
29. What is your least favorite story(s) that you’ve written?
Generally unimpressed by ALL my SV fic now. And considering I spent SO MANY HOURS/DAYS/WEEKS/MONTHS/YEARS of my life on it all I kinda feel like I should feel bad about that but... you know I really don’t? Because if it wasn’t for all the time and effort (and love and fun) I put into those not very good stories, I wouldn’t be enjoying the work I’m proud of and writing today. So *shrug emoji*
30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?
5 whole years? Tbh I rather think I’ll have stopped writing by then. I’ve been winding down when it comes to fic for a LONG TIME now and writing for Gotham feels very much like a minor, brief resurgence of the hobby. Currently planning on calling it a day once I’ve finished Fox and Scorpion in fact.
31. What is the easiest thing about writing?
The part that doesn’t involve writing.
32. What is the hardest thing about writing?
Trying not to be repetitive.
Have I started a paragraph with this character’s name too many times in a row? Am I using ‘furrowed brow’/’bites lip’/’narrows eyes’/’insert stock descriptive phrase here’ too often? Did I use this phrase already or was that in another fic or in the book I was just reading? Is there too much alliteration in this sentence?  - to name but a few of the questions that inevitably pop up related to my paranoia about repetition.
33. Why do you write?
Because I’m insatiable and the stories onscreen aren’t enough for me.
...well that was exhaustingly introspective so I’m way too tired to tag! Interesting one though, made me think! (and taught me some stuff about AO3 :p)

Hey, this is ‘Sky' (25+, Female, USA, language: English) , the mun of this humble little OC RP blog! Welcome and thanks for your interest :) this page is…yes a little long, but as with all ‘rule’ pages, is still important for you to at least skim over before interacting. :) -Important for mobile users: If you need a link to a specific verse’s info or something on this account, ask me for it, I will be happy to provide it if I have it. I wish there was a better mobile interface that would just show everything normally or allow all of my links in the description, but it doesn’t, so this is how we have to do it.
-Basic Anti-harassment etc. statement:  The basic rules of no godmodding, etc. apply. I'm just here to kick back and have fun, hopefully we can all just have a good, friendly time. It's rp. It's not that serious lol. but If I feel at all like I am being harassed, abused, pressured, etc. in a decidedly unfriendly or disrespectful way, I reserve the right to terminate interaction and block, and to do so without notice if need be.
- About being “selective”:  No big deal, really. Basically I just reserve full autonomy regarding who I decide to interact with or not, who I decide to follow/unfollow, and how and why I come to those decisions. However, while I am selective, I am NOT Mutuals-only! So if I don’t follow back, or not right away, that does not mean interaction is impossible. Deep, plotted stuff might not be immediately on the table, but everyone is still welcome to throw memes at me, mess with the inbox, etc. And I like posting memes and such, so there’s still a lot of potential to be had there.
- About Exclusivity  Or, whether I’ll play with more than one account with the same muse character - I handle this on a case-by-case basis. While I can get attached to certain portrayals, there may be certain characters where I’m open to working with more than one mun’s version. As of course, all portrayals are, inherently, at least a little different from each other, and that could be interesting to explore. If I play with you, and then interact with another mun with the same character, please don’t take this personally.
- Shipping:  I am open to shipping, and this blog is technically multi-ship (with all ships existing in separate universes) but I am NOT open to explicit sexual content. Also, even with that no-explicit rule, I will not ship romantically with any muses belonging to muns below the age of 18. I must see chemistry between our characters in order to get on-board. One-sided feelings/crushes/flirting ARE still allowed though. Your character is, of course, free to feel however they end up feeling, basically as long as you don’t pressure me to make my character reciprocate, it’ll be fine.
- NSFW  While I don't smut, potentially NSFW violence and heavy themes can occur, and it is possible for suggestive themes to occur simply because I don't control what my partners write. If it’s past a certain level, I’ll likely use a read-more cut, but this basically means use your own judgement when deciding whether to visit this blog in a sensitive environment.
-How Literate are You/how much do you tend to write per post?: I feel I can consider myself “semi-literate”? I can tend to write a lot, let’s get that out of the way now. I am Novella trash lol. BUT, I can also enjoy shorter interactions, so please don’t let this scare you, and don’t feel pressured to match my length. I try to be careful with spelling etc. and make sure things are readable, but I am of course human, and therefore not perfect.  I can be very fast in replying at times, especially if inspired/‘in the zone’, this is just how writing works for me. As with post length, you are never expected to match my reply speed.
- Activity I can generally be pretty active. I often have a tab for this place open in the background of whatever I might be doing at any given time, so hence ‘serial lurker’ lol. I am very much around in most cases. in addition to at times being fast at replying, I like to participate in and send memes to my partners etc. so want to clarify that if/when I send you a lot of stuff, I don’t necessarily expect ALL of those things to be answered. I do this more as a means of providing ‘options’ for interaction. You are of course as free as anyone else to interact or not interact with any, or none of, those things I send.
- Out-of-character (ooc) posts/dialogue:  OOC content will be proceeded by a double parenthesis ( ’((’ ) and will either be in separate posts, or in the tags of in-character posts, never the main body area of said in-character posts.  IM conversations should always be assumed to be OOC, I use that mainly for discussing/chit chat between muns.
-Why don’t you have icons/format?:  Aside from not personally being the biggest fan of icons, since this is an OC, I have to draw all the visuals for her. So it would be a big undertaking to draw my own icons, one that I really do not have the energy for. I’m also not a huge fan of formatting past stylistic use of caps, italics, or boldface for emphasis, etc. and sometimes small-text coding. This doesn’t mean I won’t play with those that do format/use icons, as long as It’s not formatted to the point or in a way that I have trouble reading it, etc., we should be fine.  - Memes/Reblog Karma: I do practice reblog karma, and prefer people do the same in regard to this account. I am not asking for ‘forced interaction’ if you don’t feel like interacting, but like a meme I post, that’s fine. I just ask that you get it from the source/the meme account I got it from/etc. Memes are almost always open, even if they’re old. If they’re more than a week or two old, I only ask/advise that you remind me which meme it’s from if you send something in from one.
-Trigger Warnings  By default, I will tag what I know to be the subject of common phobias, etc., the format will look like “#tw: blood”, “#tw: bugs”, etc. And again, if said content is past a certain point, I’ll probably use a read-more cut. But please notify me if you have any specific things you need me to tag for you.
And that about does it for right now I think, have fun bugging “Estelle” ;)
If you need to contact me about anything else, questions, ooc chatter, etc. do not hesitate to drop an ask or an IM! (Discord for mutuals on request)
