I would like to know the tragic gay blur background 😔🙏
oh anon..you know not what you ask...
TL;DR — please listen to beachcoma and battery in your leg if nothing else. as gen @yeats-infection says, "I always feel like anyone invested in ambiguously gay interpersonal drama in any other band is just lightyears behind us because they will never have two songs that good"
if the following does not convince you, consider julian @dughole’s words of wisdom: “IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW THATS IT……”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
uh okay. where to start. basically damon albarn (singer/keys/primary songwriter, the blond pretty one) and graham coxon (guitarist, brunet w/ glasses) met at school when they were 13 and 12 respectively when damon went up to graham and told him that his shoes were crap and damon's were better but they became friends cos damon had written a song with a saxophone part and graham played sax. so they were bffs throughout middle school/high school and had a shitty little band where damon sang and played keys and graham...did everything else (drums, guitar, sax, etc) and watched mike leigh films and were super obsessed with the who and quadrophenia and dreamt of becoming the next keith moon. then graham went to goldsmiths and damon went to school for acting. (here is an interview where they're being charming and discussing their childhood together.)
at goldsmiths graham met alex james (bassist, brunet w/o glasses) who was like instantly obsessed with graham because he was So Cool And Stylish And Talented And And And. while they were hanging out with damien hirst and gary hume and the rest of the soon-to-be YBAs damon dropped out of acting school after a year and moved to london to be take classes and be closer to graham and was pursuing his own musical project but eventually asked graham to be part of it and graham was like ya i know some guys (alex and dave rowntree, drummer, ginger) so they started a band which was called seymour.
(damon and alex have a weird relationship because they're both obsessed with graham and possessive of him/their respective relationships with him. so there's like a weird jealous love triangle situation alongside this tragic childhood friends to lovers to estranged enemies reunion narrative. graham was jealous of alex’s sex appeal/confidence and damon’s ambition so it was this appalling web of envy and projecting one’s insecurities onto those closest to oneself. i sincerely think that blur’s only managed to work together for as long as they have because damon, alex and dave are all in love with graham, platonically or otherwise.) (fwiw i think graham and dave also have a very close friendship that often gets overlooked but it's quite sweet and also essential to the group i think. see the second quote.)
in 1995 blur had their battle of britpop rivalry with oasis and graham tried to kill himself at the party celebrating country house getting to the #1 spot on the charts (thus “beating” oasis) but damon talked him out of it somehow. they exchanged letters in which graham said that he wanted to make music that scared people and then they made their self-titled record which was distinctly more american-sounding as that was graham’s preference and damon relinquished creative control slightly (as a result of graham’s suicide attempt? who’s to say!).
then in 1998 damon broke up with justine frischmann whom he had been very publicly dating since 1991ish and they started recording their album 13 and damon moved in with jamie hewlett who graham had introduced him to years before (cos jamie had also just broken up with his gf, jane oliver, who had dated graham before jamie and used to be in justine's band elastica—“see how close everything is?”) and the two of them started working on creating gorillaz. 13 is considered blur’s definitive breakup album cos it’s about damon and justine’s breakup but it’s also about damon and graham’s relationship deteriorating and kind of the impending breakup of blur itself. saying goodbye to that era of one’s life etc.
then when blur started working on think tank damon decided they had to kick graham out of the band cos his alcoholism was basically totally debilitating. so damon had their manager go tell graham he couldn't be in the band anymore. think tank gets released and the final song, battery in your leg, is very obviously about graham and also the only track to feature his guitar playing. another song on the record (sweet song) damon says he wrote while looking at a framed photograph of graham in his studio. so graham’s absence on the record becomes its own kind of presence ooOOoooooo!!.
so from 2002ish until 2008 graham and damon didn't talk (except for alex's wedding in 2003) but damon would like secretly attend graham's solo shows and graham would troll online forums about blur and gorillaz and they would say all these awful heartbreaking things in interviews about their broken relationship blah blah. ("maybe we liked each other too much, you know. or maybe we were too close.") (also this unbelievably un-subtle song by graham called ‘bottom bunk’. but let’s not get too tinfoil hat-y here.)
Tumblr media
then in 2008 damon and graham made up over a shared cookie on damon’s front stoop and blur did a few reunion shows for the olympics and whatnot. then graham decided he wanted to make an album out of the like 50 hours of random jams they had done while grounded in hong kong during an asian tour in like 2012/13 because he wanted to apologize for fucking up and prove to damon that they could work together again. so they released the magic whip in 2015 which has my terracotta heart on it and graham said all this bonkers insane shit about feeling like pattie harrison for having a love song written about him. also this??
so now they're all besties again and graham and damon are doing their own solo projects and alex has a cheese farm (flop) and dave is, as ever, just chillin. also graham got divorced in the past year or so and damon continues to act like an absolute nut at gorillaz shows so they're still going thru it like as people but at least they're pals once more. kind of anyway.
there are a lot of interviews where they talk about making out/"getting off" with each other and videos of them kissing each other onstage/backstage. etcetera.
i think one of the only writers to really Get blur/their dynamic is miranda sawyer who wrote an incredible article about them in 1999 that gets at the heart of what makes them so compelling.
Tumblr media
THE POINT OF ALL THIS is that sometimes you have a childhood best friend who becomes such an essential part of both how you personally see yourself in the world and how the world sees you and your success but as much as you are bound together there are fundamental elements of your personalities that are diametrically opposed and you can't keep living the life you've made together without one of you completely crashing and burning so you have to leave each other even though all you've ever known is this thing you've been building together. and sometimes after many years you are able to reconcile with one another to the extent that you can reconcile the existence of a single person whose life is so inextricably entwined with your own and who knows you better than anyone and who still loves you anyway despite how much you've fucked up. and you're both boys
Tumblr media
^that’s supposed to be a gif of damon and graham kissing onstage but it’s not working :/ also damon's mom made damon a necklace when he was a kid and when graham was in the hospital for anemia when he was 18 damon made him a copy of his own necklace to give to graham. so they had matching friendship necklaces. that's cute right
Tumblr media

In style Genres
But, as our chat reveals, the discordant story does not finish there: the naturally gifted Neelix attended his first doof little more than a decade ago, confesses to be unwell comfy in the studio, and plans to produce pop music within the close to future. Though he died tragically on the age of 33, Sam Cooke left a tremendous legacy from his few years as a high pop and soul performer. Many give credit score to Cooke for being a pioneer and founding father of what became often known as soul music when he moved from the gospel world to concentrate on in style music. Sam Cooke was also a pioneer among black performers on the business finish of music. He shaped his personal record label and music publishing company. He also turned a music chief within the American civil rights motion, lending it one of his most stirring songs, "A Change Is Gonna Come," as an anthem. A lot is manufactured from the Blur vs Oasis rivalry that ran all through the peak of Britpop and it's actually true that they were two of crucial bands of the decade. Blur's impressive again catalogue boasts a wealth of indelibly British songwriting with some of the wittiest lyrics of the Nineteen Nineties, and in addition a number of the simplest (see Tender). Damon Albarn would go on to create music with Gorillaz and pursue quite a lot of different intriguing initiatives, however the actual star of the present was Graham Coxon, who remains probably the most criminally underrated British guitarists of the 20th century. Banda is a blend of virtually all of the genres of the Mexican music, like the corridos, boleros, baladas, cumbias, rancheras, and also rock and pop. Banda is principally an enormous brass-primarily based form of music that primarily relies on percussion. It originated in the Sinaloa state of Mexico. Around 10 to twenty people are present in a band. The American band was banned for a long time in Australia, in 1996 the country stopped the sale of any Cannibal Corpse recordings and all copies needed to be stripped from music shops. The ban lasted ten years till it was lifted in 2006. Different H-topics have been far more dynamic. Between 1960 and 2009, the mean frequency of H1 declined by about 75%. H1 captures the use of dominant-seventh chords. Inherently dissonant (due to the tritone interval between the third and the minor-seventh), these chords are generally used in Jazz to create tensions that are finally resolved to consonant chords; in Blues music, the dissonances are typically not resolved and thus add to the attribute ‘dirty' color. Accordingly, we discover that songs tagged blues or jazz have a high frequency of H1; it is especially widespread in the songs of Blues artists equivalent to B.B. King and Jazz artists such as Nat ‘King' Cole. The decline of this topic, then, represents the lingering death of Jazz and Blues within the Scorching one hundred. Aurora One of the fastest rising stars in Norwegian music, this pop star from Os has toured the country extensively, and begun to make waves in international waters. Aurora has already won numerous awards since beginning out in 2015. Negus, Keith (1999) Music Genres and Company Cultures. London and New York: Routledge. Electro group Cybotron births early techno music with "Clear". Different early techno acts embrace Model 500 and Channel One. Later, artists comparable to Rhythm is Rhythm, Eddie "Flashin'" Fowlkes, Inside City, Jeff Mills, Frankie Bones, Plastikman, Underground Resistance, Moby, The Chemical Brothers, Joey Beltram, Ken Ishii, Underworld, The Orb, Adam Beyer, and Aphex Twin additionally define the sound. Electronic gets a nasty rap because most people don't yet perceive it. Its one of the latest forms of music with so many various subgenres with so many variations of its utilization that its completely thoughts boggling. My personal belief is that there's a subgenre of Digital music for everybody even those who claim to hate it. I hope someday that Digital music joins the annals of the very best music sorts of all time as I personally believe it's the future. In the event you really need to know the difference between minor music genres, you may need to get some listening training in drum grooves, as the majority of the time the drums gives you the largest and most obvious hint as to what the genre is. It additionally helps to get a way of popular music historical past, as most style distinctions only make sense within the context of their previous genres and the genres with which they are interacting contemporaneously. Music style — or http://www.audio-transcoder.com just style — refers to types of music. "Rock" is a music style, as our nation, reggae, classical, jazz amongst others. When speaking about genre within the music trade, it's helpful to think by way of top-level genres and sub-genres. This stuff is a shame to Country music. Old style country is my favourite genre of music. Quite a lot of that music was authentic musically and undoubtedly had loads of good songwriting. The Pet Shop Boys wrap erudite irony and romance in lush electronic keyboard textures topped by typically deadpan vocals to create their nook of the pop music world. They are one of the top five dance-pop artists of all time and are electro-pop pioneers. Vocalist and songwriter Neil Tennant has come out publicly, and the Pet Shop Boys' music frequently addresses and celebrates gay tradition.

"Few bands in rock historical past have had a extra fast and tangible affect on their contemporary pop musical panorama than Nirvana did in the early Nineties. When the Seattle trio hit the scene in 1991, mainstream radio was awash in the hair steel of Poison and Def Leppard. However seemingly inside hours of the release of Nirvana's anarchic, angry single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - and its twisted anti-pep-rally video-the foundations had changed. Artifice was devalued; pure, uncooked emotion was king," Rolling Stone writes of the band. There aren't many films in which you can see a musical legend pondering the correct strategy to punch a joint of pork - however then Scott Walker is hardly your typical artist, and 30 Century Man demonstrates exactly why such flights of fancy make the pop idol-turned arty recluse so revered. Admire the word. It's unlikely we are going to ever grow to be mates. The Rolling Stones absolutely belong on this checklist and I believe among the legendary bluesman would agree. They're solely chargeable for leading me to the style and my love of the music. They may stay here. My favourite style of music is classic rock and different rock. I like this genre as a result of among the songs and bands encourage me and I can relate to some songs. My favourite bands are the Beatles and Breaking Benjamin. Every time I really feel down I get my iPod and start listening to their music to get right back up. You possibly can stereotype some people by music. In case you see an individual with a cowboy hat, cowboy shirt, and cowboy boots you'll be able to inform that he listens to country music. Music is the most effective factor in America.

50 Questions Tag!
@jongin-be-my-jagi tagged me for this a while ago, but I took my sweet time to answer. Here is my secret intel if you want to know me a little bit more!! Check hers as well, she’s an amazing writer and friend. 1. What takes up too much of your time? Tumblr, my stupid procrastination prone brain and my thesis.
Tumblr media
2. What makes your day better? Friends and loved ones, music and these absolute dorks (Channie especially)
Tumblr media
3. What’s the best thing that happened to you today? I hopped on the mat today in the early hours of the morning, rain on my window and the neighbours cat peeking at me from his window across the street.
Tumblr media
4. What fictional place would you like to go to? Wonderland, bacause it’s “curiouser and curiouser!”
Tumblr media
'Who are you?' said the Caterpillar.  Alice replied, rather shyly, 'I — I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'
5. Are you good at giving advice? I think so. Not so good at following my own advice though.  I do always consider where the other is standing and if I don’t know how to proceed then I’ll just be honest and say I can’t help. But i’ll always listen with my heart.
 6. Do you have any mental illnesses? Not diagnosed. I do think i might be going through something now.
Tumblr media
7. Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis? No, but i have a recurring nightmare: the world is made of black and white paper thin layers. I am a paper thin person walking along a street surrounded by paper thin buildings. I walk for a long time, looking up at the white sky. Until the street ends, there is no more building and i fall into the abyss of a blank page.  I have had this dream since the age of 8 or 9 years old. Fear of not being good enough, you say?! Ding, ding, ding!! We got a winner in the back!  8. What musician inspired you the most? I get inspired by music all the time!! One of my all time favourite songs is Spanish Sahara by Foals. Its sublime!
youtube
So I’d say I’m mainly inspired by these artists: Queen, Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Radiohead, Bowie, Daughter, Bob Dylan, Beirut, Yeah yeah yeahs, Arcade Fire, The National, Joy Division, Blur, Warpaint, Gorillaz, Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Chet Baker, The Cure, Courtney Barnett, The Maccabees, Car Seat Headrest, Florence + The Machine, Editors, Kasabian, Crystal Fighters, Death Cab for a cutie, The Doors, Efterklang, Explosions in the Sky, Franz Ferdinand, The Horrors, James Blake, José Gonzalez, Los Campesinos!,  Metronomy, Nick Cave, Nina Simone, Patrick Watson,  Phoenix, Sharon Van Etten, The Shins, Simon & Garfunkel, The Smiths, St.Vincent, The Strokes, Toro y Moi, tricot, Tune-Yards, TV on the radio, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Vaccines, Vampire Weekend, The Velvet Underground, The War on Drugs, Wild Beasts and Yo La Tengo.
And the electro, pop and hip-hop groves of my heart: EXO, 2NE1, Janelle Monáe, Big Bang, Kris Wu,LCD soundsystem, SBTRKT, Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and Daft Punk.
And special mentions to the portuguese ones (learning from yixing and promoting when i can :P): Capicua, Joana Espadinha, The Legendary Tigerman, Linda Martini, Mayra Andrade, Noiserv, Ornatos Violeta, Paus, Samuel Uria, You Can’t Win Charlie Brown and The Silence 4. I know, tldr right? Sorry folks! 9. Have you ever fallen in love? Yes I have. I have mistaken a crush for love too. But i have definitely been very deeply in love. A wrecked kintsugi heart over here people! 10. What’s your dream date? I don’t think I have one. I’d love to do something unique with that someone special, something special for the two of us. It could be as simple as riding the subway while sharing earphones & listening to our playlist or walking the dogs out! Idk, I’m easy to please. But right now it would have to be with this handsome man :D pretty please?!
Tumblr media
11. What do others notice about you? I am very kind and warm hearted, so I think that’s what people first notice when meeting me. Although I maintain good eye contact, I am also timid and will be quieter if there are very energetic people in the group. When alone, I usually take the first step and try to meet people, but only if i really must.  12. What’s an annoying habit you have? It’s really hard for me to ask for help. I also like to tell detailed descriptions of everything... Couldn’t you tell? 13. Do you still talk to your first love? I’ll text him on his birthday and he does the same to me. We met when we were 10 years old and that childhood friendship remains. But regarding my one and truly deep relationship, no we do not talk, unless we randomly meet.
14. How many exes do you have? I have three exes. The first love who was just an idealized crush on my childhood friend: we dated for 2 weeks during summer break xD Then my first real boyfriend, we met in my first year at university, dated for quite some time, he really loved me and made me love myself a little more. Finally the one i loved too much. I mended his wounds and made him love himself as much as I did. I always say all the love we feel makes our hearts grow bigger. I do not regret loving any of them, I am me now due to them and I would not change it if I could. 15. How many songs are in your playlist? I have way too many playlists for each and every mood... But my favourite songs list on spotify has about 1500 songs! uwu!  16. What instruments can you play? Triangles and flute?! I had mandatory music classes in school... so in reality I can’t really play a instrument...
Tumblr media
17. Who do you have the most pictures of? Probably my cat, Sushi. With a second close of my doodles and sketches.
18. Where would you like to go before you die? EVERY WHERE!!! But I really want to go to Japan and Scotland and Iceland and South Korea and New Zealand and i’ll shut up. 19. What’s your zodiac? Capricorn. 20. Do you relate to it? Sort of.
21. What is happiness to you? You know when it’s really cold outside in the winter and you manage to find a sheltered place where no wind can hit you and you still get to feel the warm rays of the winter suns on your skin? You hear the birds outside and you are contempt in that moment, at peace. That is happiness to me.   22. Are you going through anything right now? Yes, I am a bit lost. Trying to finish my thesis and trying to find what I want to do after. It’s liberating but also pretty scary. 23. What’s the worst decision you ever made? It’s a series of small decisions really. It started with going for a phd with the same people i worked in my msc. Should have gone to a different place. Then deciding to come home after a traumatic loss in the family. Should have kept my life going but I stalled it then. (I don’t regret helping my loved ones though).
24. What’s your favourite store? Probably Wishtrend for beauty stuff. Other than that I don’t have any favourite brands/stores. 25. (HALFWAY!) What’s your opinion on abortion? I think everyone is free to decide what they want or need to do. I couldn’t possible judge. If I would it? Probably not.
27. Do you have a favourite album? I don’t think so, I have favourite tunes for different moods and moments in my life. But if threatened with my life, I’d maybe say Total Life Forever from Foals.
28. What do you want for your birthday? It’s such a long time until my birthday comes! But maybe a real EXO ot9 reunion as a goodbye to Minseok?
Tumblr media
29. What is most people’s first impression of you? Friendly and easy to open up to, i think.
30. What age do you seem according to most people? In real life, people usually think I am way younger than I am.  31. Where do you keep your phone when you’re sleeping? In the crook of my bed, between the mattress and the bed frame.
32. What word do you say the most? No idea really! 33. What’s the oldest age you’d date? 40s? I don’t think too much about age actually.
34. What’s the youngest age you’d date? 20s? Again not very important to me. Love is love, whomever, whenever and wherever <3
35. What job / career do most people say would suit you? I don’t know! People always say i don’t totally fit in anything... so there’s that. If you have an idea please let me know! 36. What’s your favourite music genre? Go back to question 8. I listen to everything! :D 37. If you could live in any country in the world where would it be? I’d like to live around the world, every few months a different place and get to know different cultures.
38. What is your current favourite song? I’ve been obsessed with RM’s intro/teaser song, Map of the Soul: Persona. (I’m not even a bts fan, but this music and lyrics just touched me a lot.)
youtube
39. How long have you had this blog for? I think for about 6 years? It’s my personal space, where I dump all my obsessions.
40. What are you excited for? I’m visiting some friends in Granada in a couple of weeks. Yay, tapas!
41. Are you a better talker or listener? Normally I am a better listener. But there are a few people to whom i open like a book. Either words flow right out of me without even thinking or they see throw me. Those truly are my people.
42. What is the last productive thing you did? Prepped meals and cleaned the kitchen. Open the folder and file of my thesis. Read the latest chapter I wrote.  43. What do you want for Christmas? Well, just like for my birthday, there is still such a long time to it! But let’s say i want to have already finish this part of my life and want to find my next adventure.
44. What class do you get the best grades in? No more exams! Ehehe! But I used to have good grades at everything. Physical Education was my lowest mark i think.
45. On a scale of 1-10 how do you feel right now? Right now, a 4? I have a headache.
46. What can you see yourself doing in 10 years? Smiling? :D I want to be happy in my own skin. To feel contempt in my life, doing something that gives me a sense of purpose and having time to share and enjoy with my friends and family. 47. When did you get your first heartbreak? Oh my kintsugi heart has been broken quiet a lot. By friends and lovers and even by myself. I keep patching it up with gold dreams though.  48. At what age do you wanna be married? I will only want to be married if i find the one. So until then I guess.
49. What career did you want to have as a child? I wanted to be an astronaut and a ballerina. Preferably both!
50. What do you crave right now? Just sitting somewhere and listening to Yeol play the guitar.
Tumblr media
Well i finished it! :D I’ll tag @thedeviousdo @ohsenhun @hongseok and @paepsi. I’d love to read yours! Feel free to dismiss it though, it is quite a lot.  Lots of love everyone!! <3 <3 <3

UCLA Radio’s Best of 2017 - Music and Genre Directors
This year, UCLA Radio’s music director and genre directors compiled a list of their favorite releases this past year. Take a peek and explore some of our favorite albums of this past year.
Alison Chi - Music Director
Tumblr media
1. SZA - Ctrl
I don’t know a single person who doesn’t like SZA’s sophomore album Ctrl. There are so few albums that can capture people’s attention these days - it’s all about the singles and never the album as a whole but something about Ctrl is cohesive from start to finish. The way each song weaves into each other is seamless and you’ll truly be rewarded if you sit down and listen to the album straight through. Is there even a single bad song on this album?
2. Giraffage - Too Real 3. Slowdive - Slowdive 4. Turnover - Good Nature 5. Land of Talk - Life After Youth 6. Cigarettes After Sex - Cigarettes After Sex 7. Julien Baker - Turn Out the Lights 8. Valerie June - The Order of Time 9. Slow Dancer - In A Mood 10. Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
Megan Hullander - Rock Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. King Gizzard & The Flying Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Flying Microtonal Banana was the first in a series of five albums promised to be released in 2017 (one of which has still yet to come) including a concept album ridden with the drama of human and non-human emotions, a jazzy collaboration with Mild High Club, and an album given as a gift to fans - the rights of which are “owned” by all. Flying Microtonal Banana is unique in that the band customized their instruments in effort to find spaces between existing tones, or “microtones.” The album is named for one of these instruments which does, in fact, look quite similar to a banana.
2. Thee Oh Sees - Orc 3. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Open Minds Now Close 4. Alex Cameron - Forced Witness 5. Ron Gallo - Temporary Slave 6. Ariel Pink - Dedicated to Bobby Jameson 7. Ty Segall - Sentimental Goblin 8. ORB - Naturality 9. Kikagaku Moyo - Stone Garden 10. Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile - Lotta Sea Lice
Gabe Cortina - Rock Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Limp Wrist - Facades
Featuring Martin from Los Crudos on vocals as well as members of Hail Mary, Devoid of Faith, By the Throat, and Kill the Man Who Questions, the versatility of Limp Wrist sound has never been more apparent. Identifying as queercore, the band has a fast hardcore sound and lyrical themes concerning gay identity politics. The mixing of album is something which also stood out to me, it’s able to polished without sounding over produced. Martin’s vocal style perfectly matches the killer riffs and speedy drums in both intensity and aggression. Halfway through this album, the band’s sound switches to a disco-ey almost dark-wave- techno sound which they pull of with perfection. This album is solid and I highly recommend it to both longtime fans of punk and people who are looking for an introduction to punk music alike.
2. Despise You / Coke Bust - Split LP 3. Gay Kiss - Rounded Down 4. Exit Unit - St 2017 5. Glue - S/T MLP 6. Lumpy and the Dumpers - Those Pickled Fuckers 7. Goolagoon / ACxDC - Split 8. Burnout - West Coast Tour 2017 CS 9. Sex Prisoner / Harm Done - Split 10. Meth Leppard - Discography 2015-2017
Gabe Punk Genre Director Top 10 Albums of 2017 from anon-10212970514769336 on 8tracks Radio
Alana Enriquez - Pop Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Beach House - B-Sides and Rarities
This compilation happened to be release on a day where I had only gotten around an hour of sleep the night before, and I cried within one minute of the first track. It’s Beach House at their most dreamy, their most blaring, their most haunting. Old tracks with new renditions and fresh ones meld into something spellbinding that doesn’t require the logistical unity of a formal album. B-Sides and Rarities has been on a weekly rotation for me for the entire second half of 2017, and probably for the entirety of 2018, unless they release something else for me to cry to during my morning routine.
2. Florist - If Blue Could Be Happiness 3. High Bloom - Implied Sun 4. Alvvays - Antisocialites 5. The Drums - Abysmal Thoughts 6. Slowdive - Slowdive 7. Steve Lacy - Steve Lacy’s Demo 8. You’ll Never Get to Heaven - Images 9. Pedro Infante - Cien años... pensando en ti 10. Big Thief - Capacity
Alana Myers - Pop Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Wolf Alice - Visions Of A Life
Looking back at this past September, I remember sitting in my apartment late at night, counting down until midnight when Wolf Alice’s second record Visions of a Life would be released. I haven’t ever heard anything quite like Visions of a Life before, and I think the reason it resonates so much with me is the way it perfectly encompasses the feelings that come with the uncertainty of young adulthood, and the feelings of life in general - love, anger, sadness, extreme joy, and everything in between. The album digs itself into darkness, but at its core, lies a piece of work that is ambitious, honest, and a solid listen from start to finish.
2. MUNA - About U 3. Tei Shi - Crawl Space 4. Declan McKenna - What Do You Think About the Car? 5. Stormzy - Gang Signs & Prayer 6. Will Joseph Cook - Sweet Dreamer 7. HAIM - Something to Tell You 8. Lorde - Melodrama 9. Paramore - After Laughter 10. Circa Waves - Different Creatures
Alex Saakyan - Pop Genre Director
Tumblr media
1. Lana Del Rey - Lust For Life
With an album cover that graces a smile, cheek to cheek of Lana Del Rey, it is no surprise as to why this record has been nicknamed as Del Rey’s first ‘happy album.’ Retiring from the ‘sad girl’ aesthetic of her previous records, Del Rey delivers an optimistic and authentic approach to her music. With tracks like ‘When the World Was at War’ and ‘God Bless America’ we see Del Rey take a more honest approach from her Americana aesthetic as she speaks of the hard times people in this country face. With tracks like ‘Get Free’ she delivers her mission statement: “Finally, I’m crossing the threshold/From the ordinary world/To the reveal of my heart,” She’s honest, she’s free, with a much optimism and a lust for life.

1. Jay Som - Everybody Works
Melina Duterte’s sophomore album is a bedroom production jewel. Every song, incredibly cohesive as a whole, traverses the beautifully lush sonic worlds her mind seemingly conjures up. That’s not to say the ten tracks that span Everybody Works are simple happenstances that fall together nicely; they definitely sound like labors of love. Rather her voice, certain of itself, transmits to the listener so powerfully, making sense out of all the disorder that comes with self-doubt and personal struggle. “Won’t forget to climb,” she sings on E.W’s. final track, “For Light,” beautifully steering the qualms of trying to make it in this world.

1. Nick Hakim - Green Twins
Nick Hakim blurs the line between psychedelic, soul, funk, rock, and jazz with his debut album, Green Twins. With lush melodies to command his songs and a spacey approach to recording production, Hakim creates his own unique sound and challenges the notions and implications of a music genre.  With a brand of sound that emulates Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Hakim's soundscape fills in colorful textures with his diverse instrumentation on top of steady, pulse-like rhythms.  From spacey, reflective post-R&B rock songs like "Bet She Looks Like You" to jazzy, rhythmic pulses in "Miss Chew" and slow, soulful ballads like "Needy Bees," Green Twins has just about everything you need in a debut album from an artist as complex as Nick Hakim.

1. Lorde - Melodrama
For me, Lorde's music means emotion in its purest, most honest form. Her sophomore album, Melodrama, captures her youth, her growth, her path to becoming a woman of her own and loving herself and all the ephemeral experiences in between. Mastering her craft, Lorde finds a cohesion between her atmospheric synths, harmonies, beats and the bittersweet wisdom in her lyrics. Especially in "Liability," a beautiful piano-ballad where she sings, "I understand, I'm a liability/ Get you wild, make you leave/ I'm a little much for everyone." Lorde is truly one of a kind and Melodrama proves she is one of the best artists today.

1. Kiran Leonard - Derevaun Seraun
This is probably the most sonically beautiful album I’ve listened to in years. 22-year-old Kiran Leonard blends voice, piano, and string trio into an album with each movement representing a different piece of literature, seeing as the album was written to celebrate the re-opening of Manchester’s Central Library. The album is intensely personal, and raw, as Leonard’s voice is in the spotlight, accompanied by mournful accompaniment. I recommend this album endlessly.

Cardiacs - Sing to God
“Stick and suck dribble in my dirty shoes / And crown me everything alive.”
Tumblr media
If you’re like me right now, you’re probably in a bit of a funk. Quarantine got you down, probably feeling very lonely, maybe some shit didn’t go your way. Sometimes, that unrelenting grasp of negativity can consume everything you do. It infects your entire way of thinking - the entire way you go about your day. There’s something to be said for just how powerful it can be. It can coat your entire body from head to toe.
There’s none of that in the world of Tim Smith and the Cardiacs.
Or at least, if there is, it’s masterfully disguised.
I’m not going to start this like I started the Daughters write-up, I’m not extremely well versed in the Cardiacs’ immense catalog. I’ve dipped my toes into other albums and other songs. There are some I absolutely love: the “Fairy Tales from the Rotten Shed” sessions are impeccably tight, incredibly hard-hitting, catchy, and complex. Some of the best live rock I’ve heard in a long, long time. Along with that, their material around the release of diehard fan-favorite “The Seaside” is impeccable, and this video of the track “R.E.S” cemented the track as one of my favorites in their catalog. They’ve been covered by everyone alive. Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle (I’ll get to you, “California,”), Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, and Radiohead all cite them as influences. Hell, their fantastic “Seaside” track “To Go Off and Things” was covered by none other than Napalm Death. Even complete with Cardiacs-esque bells chiming in towards the beginning of the track. There’s something to be said about the absolute magic of Tim Smith’s music that draws you in and - once it fully has you - ceases to ever let up. No other music will ever hit that same spot for you again. Yet, even compared to all the previously mentioned superb material, no other record in their entire catalog - or in the history of recorded music - captures the essence of the insanely unique, pure, raw fun like “Sing to God.”
Sing to God is every beautifully strange, hyper-pitched and lightning speed moment Tim Smith has ever written in microcosm. It is a record which forbids any and all from coming into it with sour attitudes - for these people were doomed to never have any fun from the start. Across its wondrous two discs are annihilating ear-worms, off-key circus arpeggios, beautiful instrumental work, and cryptically cathartic lyrics. This is one that rarely lets you get too long in its track listing without reminding you why it’s the only album of it’s kind. And it starts from the first track.
“Eden on the Air” is sort of a misleading opening - in a sense. It’s absolutely not misleading when the chorus of pitch-shifted vocals back up Tim over a layer of sparkle and Disney-esque sheen, as this captures the demented magic that lies in store. Yet it may be misleading in the way that fails to inform the listener of the mountain of switch-ups and technically dynamic music in store. Instead, it opts for a relaxed, catchy chorus of vocals singing in harmony. As the track ends, the background noise begins to fade away, and the few seconds you have can only prepare you so much.
CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK
With four counts on the drumsticks, “Eat It Up Worms Hero” sends you flying backwards into the wall, leaving glorious indentations in what you thought was a solid foundation. It’s best listened to with headphones turned to max. The chugging, uncommonly timed riffs find just enough time to burrow themselves into your brain before a few suddenly left turns punctuated by a burgeoning bassline and synth lines that came from another galaxy. It’d be impossible to try to name every switch-up in a Cardiacs track such as this, so I’ll only focus on my absolute favorite. Right on the mark of 1:01, more hell breaks loose than the even comparable amounts of hell that has broken loose before it. And for 15 seconds, it sounds as though the band is playing the song with earplugs in and blindfolds on. It was absolutely mesmerizing the first time I heard it. It was strange, because, as a ~16 year old kid - I never realized total random jumbles of complete random noise and sound could be so calculated. It wasn’t until about a year later that I realized that the band succeeded in making those 15 seconds more catchy than so, so many other rock records. However, my favorite part of this switch-up is that when the song breaks back into a glorious, major-key sing-a-long fest, that incredibly dissonant yet ungodly earworm-ish arpeggiating synth that sounds like it’s programmed to climb up an endless wall is still there. And it’s the catchiest part of the track. Even when the Cardiacs are indulging in the pure, clean type of fun - there’s always the Tim Smith lurking black comedy in the back of your mind. It’s beautiful. After one long-held Tim Smith shout, the song completely breaks apart for all of ten seconds. Right after, with the suddenness of an out-of-control freight train, that incredibly energetic riff from the first few seconds kicks you in the head. It slowly fades out into a classic Cardiacs piano progression until the sounds of someone actually being kicked in the head end the track. The track is over. This was the second track.
“Fiery Gun Hand” is a personal favorite on the record, and showcases the band’s ability to not only play into the tropes of their genre that they so thoroughly subvert in other material - but master them as well. The dueling guitar riffs are dueling in the most literal sense of the word. They’re fighting for individual strum space, syncing up perfectly in each of the listener’s ears until all of a sudden, this incredibly catchy synth line leads the band into two-chord heaven. It’s powerful - it feels raw while being immensely thought out and produced. The kicker here is the bridge, where the band switches key with so much effort and grace to complete another earworm on a record that’s probably already had, like, 9 or 10. “ "Click. Run! / Hello sir / I am in a tango / in a different timing I will never lose my anger I / haven't got a secret / Secrets are in my secret box / down my avenue / Suck away my tiny dress / I'm cleaner than a filthy mess / Cleaner than a big mess!"
“Bellyeye” was a single from this record, and it’s easy to hear why. That groovy guitar riff that graces the beginning is immediately pleasurable to even the most hellbent of Cardiacs despisers. The refrain after the verses accentuates what truly lies at the heart of the record - immense catchiness layered over and over again on top of itself to the point where - to an uninitiated listener - it may even sound overbearing. The real winning moment here however comes at the end of the third verse, where Smith, backed up by some newfound horns, feels the soul in his chest while singing “Storm of feeling good fun / fuck my animal heart / and ache / And heart  / and ache / Tiring now dishing out all my fancy almond ache / And arm and ache.” The song ends on an absolutely flabbergasting shift into what feels like less than half-time, swaggering itself out the door like the last man in a parade - who happens to be doing a conga dance.
If I kept writing about every song I loved off this record, this post would stretch for another three miles or so. So let me just talk about the crowned jewel of this album - the song that every Cardiacs fan will tell you absolutely blew them away the first time they heard it - the second disc’s opener: “Dirty Boy”
Dirty Boy feels to me like the logical conclusion of prog rock music. That’s an overused term to describe a lot of things - but it’s hard for me to reach into my brain for a song that truly encases the essence of prog and twists it to such a pulp. Dirty Boy is climbing a mountain that never stops growing in front of your eyes, but you’re simultaneously turning into a giant while you do. And, oh, by the way, a chorus of actual literal angels are cheering you on and joining you in shanties. Good lord this song. The opening guitar chord and the ensuing, absolutely, mind-destroyingly catchy riff that follows, would fit perfectly in some type of futuristic old-western showdown type scenario. Within the first minute in a half, Dirty Boy already gives you a tease of the absolutely orgasmic euphoria you’ll feel once the song has peaked. The line “He skip with cow eyed smile / to the blissful / Into craggy dress and / we will praise him him / We will praise him/” gives you an incredibly powerful high before sending you back climbing up that beautiful, beautiful mountain. The track is just under nine minutes of pure genius and militaristically beautiful songwriting technique. That climax. Oh god, that climax. After the six minute mark - even though it’s far from the last song of an (in my opinion) perfect record, Smith leaves his parting words for the song - and for you - the listener that was previously so blind to the jubilistic ecstasy of the world of the Cardiacs. One that leaves you begging for more, much like me.
“Over and out.”

Assorted Thoughts on “Hallelujah Money” by Gorillaz
Hey guys, I’ve wanted to write this for a few days now and finally got the chance to do it. Sorry for not finishing my next video review, but I’ve had my hands full with homework, essays, and the recording of my first podcast. (I’ll make an announcement about that later!) But anyway, I’ve wanted to make this for a while, so let’s talk about the newest song released by Gorillaz, “Hallelujah Money.”
youtube
Now let me first give some background. My parents raised me on a lot of older music from the ’60s and ’70s, but from about 2010-2015, I started discovering a lot of bands and artists from the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s that I missed out on, like Muse, Foo Fighters, Depeche Mode, etc. One of those bands was Gorillaz, the collaboration between lead singer/pianist/songwriter Damon Albarn (formerly of Blur) and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett (creator of Tank Girl). I was first drawn to listen to their music due to the not often used concept of a band whose members are all cartoon characters, but when I actually did listen to their songs, I realized that this wasn’t just a novelty band. This was the real deal, so I bought all three of their albums, Gorillaz (2001), Demon Days (2005), and Plastic Beach (2010). Everyone should listen to these albums at some point in their lives. They’re that good and actually tackle serious topics, like depression, consumerism, gun violence, the War on Terror, and pollution.
However, it seemed that just as I was getting into their music, they broke up. In 2013, Damon announced a hiatus due to creative differences between himself and Jamie, which really depressed me. It didn’t help that the story arc shown in the videos of Plastic Beach was left permanently unfinished due to budget cuts from their record company, and their last two offerings before the split were somewhat underwhelming. I consider 2011’s The Fall as less of a cohesive album and more of a weird compilation of unfinished that Damon Albarn recorded on his iPad while on tour, and 2012’s “DoYaThing” was forgettable and brought little closure to the Plastic Beach arc.
But after two years of waiting, they finally announced in 2015 that they would get back together, and they’ve spent their time since then promoting the hell out of this album. I mean it, too. There have been several pictures of the characters posted to tease the new videos, with each one having had a redesign. A series of videos called “The Book of Gorillaz” were posted summarizing the Gorillaz’ story between the end of the unfinished “Rhinestone Eyes” music video and now, which directly goes against what happened in the “DoYaThing” video, but it offers much better closure for that arc. The band’s fictional guitarist Noodle has been super active, too; she got an Instagram account used to further tease the new album, she appeared in a Jaguar Racing commercial, and she even got an OKCupid online dating profile! Are cartoon characters even allowed to get profiles on that site?
The point is, they got me hyped, and I couldn’t wait to listen to the first taste of their new music. And just a few days ago, they dropped a new song, “Hallelujah Money,” and I rushed to listen to it. How was it?
…Eh?
This is a weird song for me. I have found so many things wrong with it, yet I still feel a need to defend it from other Gorillaz fans who hate it. It was certainly a strange choice for the first taste of their new sound.
Now I found out a few hours after I listened to “Hallelujah Money” that this isn’t actually the first single from their new album. I’m not entirely sure how to interpret that, though. Does it mean that this isn’t the first official single from the new album, but it will still be on the album? Or does it mean that it won’t be on the new album and was just a standalone song that they recorded and released separate from the album? Gorillaz have done that before; look at their past songs, “Rockit” and “DoYaThing.” Both of those were recorded and released separate from any album; “Rockit,” released in 2004, was not a part of Demon Days, and “DoYaThing,” released in 2012, will, as far as I’m aware, not be included on the upcoming album. So this is not uncommon to do; however, I was unaware of that when I listened to it. I thought it was a weird first song to tease the album with. I was expecting another “Clint Eastwood,” another “Feel Good Inc.,” or another “Stylo.” But this?
Okay, let me first defend this song by saying that people’s reasons for disliking it are kind of stupid. This song is very clearly about Donald Trump becoming the 45th President of the United States. I’ve avoided talking much about this topic, but I’ll sum it up by saying that it’s already taken a toll on my family and I’m scared for what’s to come. Anyway, people in the comments of this video are hating the song because it’s political, which I find kind of funny because Demon Days and Plastic Beach were both mostly about political-themed topics and nobody seemed to mind those albums.
But with that said, there are a few things I find weird about this song. Musically, it follows the same avant-garde style that was present in The Fall, which was not what I was expecting. The best description I can give for it is politically-fueled gospel to a trip-hop beat. For a song by Gorillaz, there isn’t really a lot of Gorillaz in it, not even in the music video; 2D shows up in puppet form to sing the chorus, and Murdoc appears at the beginning and end of the video as a still image. I was hoping for more cool animation in their videos, but we don’t get a lot of that.
The next problem is the featured artist, poet and singer Benjamin Clementine, who is featured more on the song than Damon/2D. He has a nice crooning voice. My only problem is that I have a hard time understanding what he’s singing/saying due to his British accent. The only words I recognize from him are ones about “building walls.” This wouldn’t be a problem if the song had a nice tune/hook to sing along to; the problem is that it doesn’t have that. Apart from the chorus, which just repeats the title, “Hallelujah Money,” and 2D’s part, I can barely remember how the song goes.
And then there is this weird part at the very end where it shows a clip from SpongeBob SquarePants of the title character running away and bawling. Why did the video cut to that? I’m not sure if it’s in the actual song or just the video, but it throws me off every time I watch it. Apparently, it’s SpongeBob’s reaction to when Mr. Krabs tells him, “You’re fired,” the catchphrase that Donald Trump takes credit for popularizing in his TV show The Apprentice, but it seems like sort of a vague reference to make. The only people who would get that are SpongeBob fans, and I doubt that there’s a very high crossover audience between SpongeBob fans and Gorillaz fans.
I will say this, though: at least with this, Gorillaz fans can’t claim that they’re getting too mainstream. There were some Gorillaz fans who claimed they were getting too mainstream in their last album, Plastic Beach, so now that they’ve released this, one of the least mainstream songs in their entire discography, fans can no longer claim that.
So, final thoughts? Well, despite all the criticisms I’ve made, I’ve listened to it a few times over and, well, it isn’t terrible. I at least see what they were trying to do. Whether they did it successfully is up for debate. I guess I like it more in concept than I do as a song. I agree with the political message—we live in an era where we could certainly use a Demon Days Part Two—and don’t think that they style they’re going for is an inherently bad one. For a better attempt at this, listen to track 13 of Demon Days, “Fire Coming Out of the Monkey’s Head,” with Dennis Hopper. I also don’t leave this with zero hopes for the new album. Yes, there is a chance that this could be what the entire album sounds like and that it could wind up being a huge disappointment, but they’ve worked on this album for around two years now. I’m still skeptical, but coming from the same guys who made “El Mañana”? C’mon. They have to have better stuff in store.

Warganization - Warg Cola EP
Warganization is a music project with a rather unique and eclectic twist. The project’s sound blurs the lines between a wide variety of genres, highlighting an incredibly diverse approach, which knows no boundaries or genre definitions. For instance, the outfit’s most recent release, “Warg Cola” EP, is an outstanding collection of alternative electronic songs, which also feature influences as diverse as rock, pop, R&B and neo-soul.
The sound of Warganization is really personable and direct, while the group also tips the hat off to notable performers, including James Blake, Radiohead, Chet Faker, Gorillaz or Nine Inch Nails, only to mention but a few. The EP is filled with exciting highlights, including “Glacier,” a fantastic number that really highlights the project’s marks and traits. The single features “Lucid Dreams,” and it creates haunting textures that denote a clever and witty approach to production. The EP, in general, is remarkably balanced, in spite of the diverse compositional approach of each track. The low end is full and balanced, while the mid-range is warm and present, but never harsh and overpowering. To top it all off, the treble frequency is silky, smooth and pleasant, almost making me think of the sonic signature often associated with skilled producers such as Nosaj Thing, Jon Hopkins or Flying Lotus, only to mention but a few.
All in all, this is definitely a release to keep on your radar, particularly if you enjoy the work of producers that have a keen ear for experimentation while retaining their trademark clarity and punch. There is a refreshing taste of unpredictability, which makes for a really engaging listening experience from top to bottom. This is why we highly recommend listening to this release in full, from beginning to end.

We were also able to chat with Warganization about the music: keep reading for a full interview!
I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and organic. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?
Answer:  A lot of it comes at the same time, or various times throughout the process.  Like I’ll be working on the music and put down a vocal idea, which may make a certain following musical part make more sense to come after it.  With Warganization I normally do start producing first and kind of come up with vocal ideas as I go along, though, as opposed to more traditional “pre-production” methods of songwriting.
Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?
Answer:  We’ve been doing a lot better with live shows over the past year and a half.  Technically we’ve had performances going as far back as 2014, but last year I think we really “figured it out” in terms of what actually translated best to a live stage, crowd, etc.  Having live drums be a part of it, for instance, was a big leap in the physical element of our shows.  We actually have a gig in Lafayette, LA a couple of weeks from now which will essentially count as the “record release party” for Warg Cola, so that should be something.
If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?
Answer:  From this EP, probably the first track, “Parlia.”  In general probably the live performance of “Trials & Tribulations” from our In-Studio release last year.  That song, in general, was really kind of the “birth” of what would become the general Warganization sound, I think, and in the live version it takes on a more lively & variable kind of nature which is more in line with our newer material.
What does it take to be “innovative” in music?
Answer:  Not caring or thinking too much.  It’s the same logic behind people who say there’s “nothing new” in music, they’re just looking for this scientific, obvious answer instead of really opening their minds to what actually is new and possible right now – a lot of people kind of close off when they don’t like something right off the bat, or it’s not directly related enough to music of the past that they like.  If you look a little harder though you may find those connections.
Any upcoming release or tour your way?
Answer:  After the Warg Cola EP we’ll be doing a few one-off shows, and as for going back to the studio, I think the next thing we would tackle would be a couple of releases that have been put on hold for a while now.  But that’s all I’ll say about that.
