For me, the biggest "let's make Harry & Hermione's relationship come off as better while undermining his friendship with Ron & beige-dishragificating his future wife" moment the films ruined for me was the scene where Harry says his goodbye to Ron & Hermione. I don't blame the actors, but the Fing script. How wood Hermione know Harry's a horcrux? Y did they make Ron "HE BEAT U!" Weasley awkwardly stand there without showing a reaction? Where was the fact that Harry INEXPLICABLY thot of Ginny?!!

Hahahaha. Do you know what the funny thing is? This was just one of the millions of scenes whose general concept they took from the books but then made everything go in the exact opposite direction. The excuse that the movies are a summary doesn't count anymore there.

In the book, Harry doesn't even see anyone he cares about but Ginny (sorry Nev, it is what it is) and he's not able to say goodbye because otherwise, he would never be able to do what he has to do. It's a gut-wrenching moment. The whole sequence from when Harry understands that he has to die to when he dies is my favorite one of the saga and in the movie they completely destroy it. And don't even get me started on the erasure of Harry's last thought, completely ruining the allegory of his two families, the past and the future.

But also the idea that book!Ron and book!Hermione would let Harry go is so absurd. Ron would've taken Harry and locked him in a room and Hermione would have gone crazy and rushed to the library frantically claiming that there needed to be another solution.

The only person that I could ever maybe hypothetically consider having the emotional strenght to let Harry go would be Ginny. But Harry thought he was going to die and he would have never let Ginny live with the fact that she didn't stop him. It's also true that Harry wouldn't have been able to go anyway, so problem solved.

Movie!Ron standing there and not even hugging Harry was so ridiculous and can I also say cringe? The movies from the fourth one on are a cringe-fest, honestly.

One last thing about Ginny being Harry's last thought is that it is only one of the many scenes between them that is incredibly cinematic in the books, scenes that were all erased when they made the actual movies. We have Ginny running after the train and Harry looking at her, their looks at each other when they share a joke would have worked so well on screen, the first kiss, the break-up scene, and the kiss in Ginny's room where they could've done so many interesting things with the light from her window...

The last thought would have even worked referencing that shitty first kiss from the HBP movie. When Voldermort throws the Avada Kedavra, you make Harry close his eyes, suspension of reality, the scene slows down, there's Ginny who takes a step towards Harry and kisses him, Harry opens his eyes, Ginny is not there instead the scene returns to the normal pace and the curse hits Harry. All of this done with the appropriate camera angles obviously.

And you know, as much as I'll be eternally angry at Kloves, the worst one will always be JKR never saying anything bad about the movies just because it was economically convenient for her. She knows they suck, everybody knows that. They are bad movies even if you haven't read the books (besides the first two). There's even an interview with Radcliffe where they basically make fun of the fans who didn't like the differences with the books pretending that people's issue was that there wasn't every single scene from the books. Pathetic.

Right? Hermione was very socially awkward and not super empathic or likeable, and she turns into the mom friend who has to constantly explain emotions and social situations to the boys(yknow cause she’s the girl). Whether that is natural character development or something that is out of the blue is subjective(I’d personally have to reread the books to be sure one way or the other). It obviously isn’t super jarring to most people otherwise more of them would’ve noticed it I guess but idk I think I would’ve liked to see the original more unconventional hermione in the later books :/

yeah, it’s a shame, because those traits were *exactly* what made hermione interesting (and, in the case of myself and several other socially awkward book-smart weirdos i knew as a kid, *actually* relatable), and they got softened and/or whittled down to nothing as the series went on. i blame the movies a lot for this, too, given how blatantly hermione was the favorite of steve kloves, and how allergic the movies were to letting her be complicated, or, gods forbid, wrong.

I really hate how Kloves basically manipulated The Author when she was writing the seventh book. She always maintained that Hinny were soulmates, but he kept pressing her like "k BUT Harmione tho." And then she was suddenly like "oh yeah, let me just add 2 charged moments between them in the seventh book, yeah it totally could've gone that way after all." (Paraphrasing all of that, of course)

I swear, he never should've been involved in the HP universe. I'm glad he's NOT involved in the new TV series; with it promising to be accurate to the books, plus the commercial and critical failure of the one Fantastic Beasts movie he wrote, he will hopefully never be a part of the HP universe ever again. #AntiSteveKloves

It's about time we should stop blaming kloves and start blaming classist fans(mostly Europeans and Americans). Most of the Weasley bashing is a result of classsism. Not movies. The amount of slytherin and aristocracy wank in fandom should tell you that as the movies didn't portray any Slytherin in good light except for Snape. And Snape doesn't get nearly as much wank as other slytherins, James potter, Sirius Black get. Lol

When did you start shipping hinny

A bit of backstory in my venture into HP. I saw an ad for the reunion special, and thought to myself "Why have I never seen Harry Potter?". I then bought a HBO subscription the same night and watched PS. And it was love at first sight. I then watched a movie a day for the next week. And I ordered the books straight after finishing DH pt. 2. Whilst I waited on the books, I found this concept called fanfiction. And I started reading stories, which caused me to fall deeper in love with the world of Harry Potter. And when the books finally arrived, I couldn't put them down. Ever since I finished them, I have had PPD(Post Potter Depression) and tried to drown that with fanfiction. Which has worked pretty well so far.

Anyway, back to the question:

I think it was during CoS.

Ginny being so awkward around Harry is brilliant. The way she runs out of the kitchen when she see him is adorable. The way he panics over her (almost) dead body. Ginny defending Harry against Lucius is also precious. Unfortunately Ginny didn't really appear before OOTP again, so I didn't really think about them all that much during PoA and GoF. (I will never forgive Steve Kloves for that.)

In OOTP I just couldn't get behind Cho/Harry, so I started looking elsewhere for someone to ship Harry with. The obvious choice had been Hermione, but she was clearly in love with Ron and her and Harry had zero romantical chemistry during those movies. Maybe it was a subconscious decision made during CoS, but I started shipping Hinny. I cherished the few scenes they had throughout the rest of the movies, but I didn't LOVE them, like I do now.

That wasn't until I read the books. And oh my, the movies RUINED Ginny Weasley. She is such an amazing character, and truly the perfect woman for Harry. And without a doubt soulmates. I wish we had gotten more scenes with them in HBP, but I will take what I can get. Their kiss was brilliant(fuck whoever gave it to Ron/Lavender in the movies). Their banter was fantastic(fuck whoever cut that out of the movies). Their obvious strong love for each other(fuck whoever ignored that in the movies.)

I can understand if people who have only seen the movies don't ship them. Because they are severely underdone, and not reading the books first will forever haunt me. But book Hinny is nothing less than fantastic. I love them.

And fanon Hinny, whew. That is even better. The way some of the authors write them is breathtaking. I can't put into words how glad I am for discovering fanfiction. I don't know how I would have coped with the rough patches that has occurred during these past 14 months, if I didn't have fanfiction.

Steve Kloves or whoever is to blame for movie Hinny, made me crave some good Hinny content so much, that I started writing it myself. And whilst I wouldn't classify it as good Hinny content, at least not the first few drafts. It still clenched that need for more good content temporarily.

This answer got a lot longer than expected, and turned into a rant about Steve Kloves. But thank you so much for the ask anon :D

Although incubus sometimes made it harder to tell ≈2017??& last 5 years???? But it’s very clear now. Trying to gain clarity. Pain can do that. I think 🤔 they are too much about control. So much, that they don’t want anymore population growth & they like it when people prematurely die & suffer. Somedays I forget that terrible death scene exists, other days I am filled with rage as that scene is a key reason why I have yet to rewatch that movie, and on other days I contemplate just splicing in the Voldemort/Harry final battle from A Very Potter Musical because somehow they managed to capture the essence of that scene in a way that a $175M movie completed failed to

it still baffles me that they let him direct FOUR MOVIES. literally the second half of the saga - and arguably the most important part because of how much more complex the plot becomes - is directed by him.

in OOTP some very important scenes and plot points were left out but the movie was still pretty enjoyable... the same cannot be said for the other 3, with the exception of deathly hallows pt.1 which is okay, although it suffers from a few plotholes... but now I’m starting to think that DH1 isn’t that bad precisely because it’s less focused on the action.

so I think we can all agree on one thing, and that is that David Yates isn’t very good at directing action scenes: he either doesn’t include them in the movie, or he ruins them. I don’t think he’s the only one to blame, though, because as far as I know, Voldemort turning into confetti was actually in the script, which was written by Steve Kloves.

I don’t know who’s at fault here to be honest. I think we can all agree that at some point they realised that HP was a money machine so instead of asking themselves what would make it more book accurate, they went with what made it more marketable and profitable.

it’s a downright shame but you know, you get used to it after all these years... however, the fact that over 10 years later David Yates is still proud of that specific choice doesn’t make sense to me. he must be aware of the backlash. literally every HP fan I’ve ever met dislikes that scene and thinks that it’s anticlimactic and poorly executed. the scene required at least one of the following plot points in order to be acceptable: 1) it had to happen in front of a crowd because everyone had to see him die 2) Harry had to give him the whole speech and tell him the truth and 3) he had to die like a mortal man. in the end it didn’t meet ANY of these requirements.

ugh. it’s frustrating and I’ve been yelling about it for years and the reunion only fuelled my rage.

I'm a bit confused. You said in one post that you thoroughly dislike Hermione and that you had no respect for her at all. Yet ... you like Romione? idk, it seems contradictory tbh. I like when Romione shippers acknowledge her flaws and messed up moments but when someone that dislike and even hate her character that much ships Romione and I see them posting about them and calling them "cute" just seems weird

I’ll share with you my whole thought process so you can understand where I’m coming from:

Itty-bitty Vivi who read Harry Potter for the first time (at 13/14, so not so itty-bitty I guess, oops): Woaaah Hermione and Ron yaay!!! They're awesome I love them! They're my OTP always and forever!! Best thing to happen in Harry Potter!! JKR is a genius!

Slightly less itty-bitty Vivi discovering the Harry Potter fandom online (thankfully years after the ship wars, else I probably wouldn't have survived): Why is there so much hate towards Ron? And why are people so opposed to Romione?? It was meant to be since the first book! Or, okay, the second book is when I realized it was gonna happen, but still! Oh well, here is a fic where Hermione berates Ron for everything and he is the only one actually working for their relationship. Cool, more Romione!

Even less itty-bitty Vivi starting her own Tumblr and going around, adding her grain of salt to debates and talking about stuff: Yeah! Ron is great! He's done bad things of course but Hermione has done her fair share of bad things too! Actually, now that I'm rereading the books, I'm reminded of this person I used to call a friend, who was quite smart and cultured but would often be very harsh to me because they claimed it was “for your own good" and “because I'm more mature than you"… I still wanted to be around them, because they were just so smart and passionate, but we often rowed and eventually they really just went too far and tried to make ME out to be the bad guy and most people believed them because they had a reputation as someone cool and logical while I was known for being emotional… wait, what the fuck, that's… that's exactly what happens in the fandom with Ron and Hermione! What the fuck, was I Ron? Admired their intelligence, praised and supported them, fell in love even but was met with scorn and open disdain?!… no, no, come on. Hermione wasn't that bad.

Vivi rereading Half-Blood Prince (and no, this wasn't about the canaries, but about what Hermione was doing after): Oh my god she was that bad.

Vivi as she ponders alternately: Wait, what about JK Rowling? What does she think about all that? What was her intention, what did she want to accomplish with the characters? I know books belong to their readers but if I want as objective an analysis as possible I must try to understand her thought process while she wrote.

Vivi learning about a staple of British literature called “literary alchemy”: The quarreling couple!! Sulfur and Mercury, the Red King and the White Queen, who must marry for the story to end happily!! And their union is represented by… a rose!! Oh my god, that is brilliant, that is so cool! Romione was ALWAYS going to happen, I knew it! Ha!

Vivi discovering the “[Ron] needed to make himself worthy of Hermione” quote: Wha… but… what? Worthy? As if Hermione was some sort of precious trophy or whatever? What the hell? Wait, Ron had to make himself worthy of her but Hermione didn't have to make herself worthy of him? Is it because Ron is the boy or some shit like that??

Vivi going through JK Rowling's interviews and finding sexism and double-standards galore: Yep, it's because he's the boy. And that bit about Hermione being based off herself when she was younger… ouch. And to top it off the scriptwriter pretty much worshipped Hermione…

Vivi rereading the books again: Is it just me, or does Ron hardly ever get any praise or acknowledgement from the adult characters? Meanwhile Harry and Hermione get stuff like “as good as Charlie Weasley" or “brightest witch of her age"! And, damn, I used to side with Hermione because I love cats, but she was completely awful in POA! She apologized but then the plot made her out to be right even then?? And I always thought her Yule Ball entrance was kinda over-the-top, but damn if that's not compensating for something! Also what the hell, I get that Harry is suffering and all but will someone PLEASE pay attention to the fact that Ron is being bullied BY A FOURTH OF THE STUDENT BODY AND NOBODY SEEMS EVEN REMOTELY CONCERNED????? Also what the hell is wrong with the sixth book, I never liked it much but it's like it's trying to make every character look bad, wtf?? And, and, holy shit I never noticed but Ron was asking legit questions during the Horcrux Hunt debate but Harry kept deflecting or mocking him but it's still Ron who had to apologize in the end??? And I've read a whole post about how Hermione punching Ron is the appropriate reaction for a very small child and not a supposedly “mature" character, and that Harry had to SHIELD RON FROM HER, oh my god?? It's… oh my god, what the fuck is wrong with JK Rowling?

Vivi, in denial: Well, Harry Potter is decidedly not a romance. It's about love, but romantic love is quite far down the priority list when it comes to it. JKR has herself confessed that she wasn't too good at writing romance, and I don't blame her because writing romance is hard. But I did enjoy Romione! When I was little I saw it coming from a mile away, granted I was already savvy in literature but that must have been because she was doing something right! And then the sixth book happened… the sixth book which… which was released after the Harry Potter movies were being filmed, wasn't it?

Vivi looking up the timelines: Oh my god. Oh my god it's even worse, the movies were being discussed before Goblet of Fire came out. Come to think of it, I always found that the Trio felt… different, after Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry and Ron especially felt like they had gotten dumber? And Hermione was suddenly explaining everything when exposition used to be split between her and Ron…

Vivi, in mourning: So that's what happened. Ron ended up being shortchanged to make Hermione look better, because Rowling was fonder of Hermione than she was of Ron, and the scriptwriter too come to think of it. Curse you, Steve Kloves!!!

Vivi, who is nothing if not what Pokémon fans call a nostalgiafag: But… but… yeah, it sucks that Ron was shortchanged, and actually yeah it's a freaking travesty and I WILL freaking spread the world about this, mark my words, but, but I still… I can't help it, when Hermione “looked up at Ron and her frostiness seemed to melt" I melt too. When Ron compliments Hermione or tries to take care of her as much as he can I… it still does something to me, I still find myself rooting for them even if I know there's the awful sixth book and the stupid post-Locket beatdown. Their kiss, for God's sake, I've just realized that Ron may have swept Hermione off her feet physically, but it's Hermione who jumped him, you could say Hermione metaphorically swept Ron off his feet!! God damn it, that's good, that's so good!

Vivi, at war with herself: No, I can't let myself be blinded by nostalgia!! The facts are that Hermione shows borderline abusive - even actually abusive - behaviour, this can't be denied! I don't want to root for an abusive relationship! I don't want to root for a relationship that relies on my favourite character being dumbed down to work!!!

Vivi, about to uncover the secrets of the universe: … wait a second. I don't have to.

Vivi, having an epiphany: Reading Solstice Muse's Romione fanfics gives me such happiness because she just gets the characters! She doesn't portray Hermione as perfect and never fucking up, and she always treats what happens to Ron with respect… Well, especially since she can't play them off as a joke since she often makes Ron the POV character. But, yeah! I can still like Romione… if it's well-written. Which, well, isn't the case in the original books… at least, isn't the case anymore after Rowling's bias got the best of her. Even though they do have their great moments.

Vivi, finding purpose in her life: I am going to spread awareness. I am going to tell the world. Fuck, just rereading the books, I've noticed how blatant the favouritism is and how unbalanced it can be. No wonder the fandom seems to collectively scoff at Ron - the books themselves do whenever it's convenient for them! The fandom plays favourites, because the author herself played favourites, and the worst part is that she didn't even realize it! Imagine you spend your life getting into traumatic situations out of love for your friends who always receive compassion and validation for their feelings about said traumas, but YOUR trauma is hardly touched upon and in the rare case it is, it's only to be mocked or used against you… Fuck! You're a piece of work, JKR! And the fandom just swallows it whole like a bunch of lobotomized snakes! Screw it! Screw it, I'm going to say it like it is, and I'm going to say it LOUDLY! People are going to hear about what Ron goes through and we'll see if Harry and Hermione look like the only ones worthy of therapy then!!

Present day Vivi, as she scrolls through the (heavily filtered) Romione tag on AO3: Ugh, another Drarry… and another… and another… oh, a Hinny-centric fic for a change, cool but I'm looking for more Romione than that, sorry. Gah, why is it that Romione appears as a secondary ship everywhere but they can't get their own stories? I've just seen a Snupin come up for God's sake! Oh, finally, a full Romione!! *clicks* … … … awww that was so sweet. Kudos! Okay back to the search… oh, another one!! *clicks* … … … it's Ron-bashing. Why do people hate on Ron? Like bruh, he Is a good friend

Thank you for asking, anon! Any excuse to rant about Harry Potter is good for me.

People like to cling to the few times in the books that Harry and Ron's relationship took a dip without looking much further than surface level. They usually list "a bunch" of examples of Ron being a bad friend (he's not) but they mostly agree on two distinct moments: In Goblet of Fire when he's tired of being in Harry's shadow, and in Deathly Hallows when they fight and Ron ends up leaving.

Ron haters like to cling to these particular moments because, at face value, they paint a really bad picture of Ron, especially in comparison to the ever-perfect Hermione, who stood by Harry on both occasions. But if you dig deeper, there are very real and understandable reasons for what Ron did, and very real arguments to be made that he's an even better friend for rising past those reasons and deciding to come back to Harry.

Adding a read more because this will go on for a bit.

In Goblet of Fire, Ron has already been best friends with Harry for three years. Keep in mind, this is a guy who: sacrificed himself in first year, faced his greatest fear in second year, and stood up to an alleged mass murderer in third year. Ron is incredibly brave and selfless. On the other hand, Ron is a very insecure person from the moment we meet him. Overshadowed by his older siblings, he feels the need to rise above them and prove his worth (even though no one should have to prove they matter, but that's beside the point). He feels inadequate, both at being a wizard and being Harry's friend because once again, he's the "weak link" in a relationship. Harry's fame and popularity, both positive and negative (see Chamber of Secrets), always puts a strain on their relationship, but they always face it together and their bond is made stronger each year. But in fourth year, Harry is chosen as the mysterious fourth champion, unbeknownst to wizards such as Dumbledore and Fudge, and most certainly, Ron. He feels betrayed by his best friend, but not because he doesn't trust him. Their entire arc fighting is the culmination of years of Ron's insecurities holding him back and convincing him he's "not good enough". It takes his best friend almost dying to the dragon for him to be the bigger person and admit his mistake, and then proceeds to try to make it up to Harry all year, even going as far as offering his own body as a metaphorical and literal punching bag when Harry is practicing spells for tasks 1 and 2. He's Harry's best friend and makes sure to remind him of that through his actions. Also, for those unfamiliar with the books (because the movies made such a poor job of showing this dynamic), Harry and Hermione were barely able to hold conversations without Ron during their separations. Harry himself says she's a great friend, but "she's not Ron".

Now, in Deathly Hallows, people love to point out Ron leaving them but fail to realize two key elements that, while not excusing Ron's actions, put them into perspective.

1. At the point where they fight, Ron has been wearing the Horcrux for an entire day, even longer than they usually wore it in shifts (and I still maintain that they should have kept it in Hermione's bag, but that's J*R creating stupid conflict). But Gomez, I hear you say, the other two had been wearing it just as much as him. While that is true, it is very obvious that the Horcrux affects Ron's mind even worse than his friends. That is not to say he's weak, far from it, but it is evident that the locket tries to push you away from people and poison your mind and soul by drawing from things such as your insecurities, of which we have established Ron has an abundance. Harry and Hermione are spending a lot of time together, and while neither of them thinks about the other that way, Ron's insecure mind doesn't know that. Plus, Ron has been established to be the equivalent of "street smart" and at the moment, book smarts are much more prevalent as they are researching really old magic and, essentially, magical history (Voldy's past). Once again, he feels inadequate in his standing within his friend group, and the Horcrux takes advantage of that.

2. Something people don't usually realize is that, while his sentiment is flawed, Ron's words aren't entirely without merit. That is to say, Ron reminds Harry that both he and Hermione thought Harry had something more to go on than "we must find various objects". That is obviously not Harry's fault (once again, blame Dumbledore for that one), but the truth is still there, albeit magnified by the locket's power. Ron feels like they're making no progress (because honestly, up until that point, they weren't doing very well). As an aside, the movies paint Ron's argument as much pettier than it actually is in the books, namely by changing this line:

"My parents are dead!" Harry bellowed.

"And mine could be going the same way!" yelled Ron.

which basically frames Ron as being worried about his family, a VERY prevalent fear of his. Remember that, while Harry's family is dead and Hermione's is safe in Australia, Ron's are out there in the open, some even actively fighting Voldemort themselves. The movie, unfortunately, twists this into:

Harry: You think I don't know how this feels?

Ron: No, you don't know how this feels! Your parents are dead, you have no family!

This just invalidates his entire motivation, and frankly, his entire character in the past 6 years. It makes Ron seem like an unsympathetic character. Instead of having Harry bring out his parents as an argument for him having it bad, Ron does so to highlight that Harry does not know what Ron is feeling and that he doesn't have a family, even though they've already established that Harry is essentially already part of the Weasleys.

All in all, there are many smaller moments, both in the books and in the movies, where Ron's character is put into question (as with every character) but people don't like to acknowledge all the good qualities he displays in between those moments. It is in part Steve Kloves' (writer for all movies but one) fault for giving A LOT of Ron quotes to Hermione and turning him into a bumbling buffoon who just wants to eat and is a somewhat funny comedic relief, instead of the sarcastic genius he is in the books.

Every now and then I think about how of all the changes from HP books to the movies, the adaptation of the Crookshanks-Scabbers fiasco in PoA grinds my gears the most. Want receipts? Fear not, I come prepared.

In the book:

1) Ron & Scabbers

Ron is worried about Scabbers’ waning health, using what little pocket money he has to buy him a rat tonic. He refuses the menagerie witch’s offer to use the money to get himself a new rat, and it is implied that he is doing it out of loyalty to Scabbers, who has been with the Weasleys for years.

2) Crookshanks

Ron’s first encounter with Crookshanks is the cat jumping on his head and nearly scalping him. The witch remarks that no one wants him and Ron remarks that he is not surprised. Hermione then buys Crookshanks to Ron’s and (to a lesser extent) Harry’s consternation.

3) Hermione

Throughout the book, Hermione shows a lack of appreciation for Ron’s concern about Crookshanks preying on Scabbers. She claims Ron is being paranoid and Crookshanks is displaying normal cat behaviour. It turns out in the end that this is not the case, as Crookshanks has indeed been preying on Scabbers, i.e. Pettigrew in disguise.

4) Scabbers is gone

When Pettigrew stages his disappearance, Ron is understandably devastated. He puts two and two together, sees evidence planted by Pettigrew and blames Crookshanks, and by extent Hermione, who has not been keeping him in check. Not one single character thinks that this is an unreasonable interpretation, in fact Harry is convinced that Ron is correct based on the few month’s worth of the cat and rat’s interactions. The only person who refuses to believe Ron’s accusation is Hermione, Crookshanks’ owner.

5) Scabbers is found

After she reaches the end of her tether, Hermione finally approaches the boys and Ron offers his help with Buckbeak’s trial. She breaks down and apologises for her behaviour regarding Scabbers. Ron awkwardly reassures her that he was old anyway. The evening Buckbeak’s execution is scheduled, Hermione is making tea in Hagrid’s hut, when she stumbles upon Scabbers. She is freaked out (implying she had by that point also believed him dead) and Ron is shocked but immediately jumps to get him, saying “no cats here, there is nothing here to hurt you” (d’aww, your fave would never, but I digress). The whole evening is then set in motion by Buckbeak’s “execution”.

6) Pigwidgeon

Following the reveal of Scabbers’ true identity and subsequent escape, way too much stuff goes down, and by the end of it everyone is kind of Shook. In the end, Sirius sends Ron a miniature owl, in order to make up for the fact that Ron no longer has a pet.

Cool, let’s check out how the movie did. Oh hey look, it’s worse in every imaginable way!

1) Ron & Scabbers

Ron does not show more than cursory concern for his pet the entire movie. There is a movie-only scene where Mrs. Weasley runs after the train to give Ron Scabbers because he forgot to take him to school with him. Harry, Ron’s best friend, didn’t even know Scabbers has been missing when Ron starts saying he’s been killed. The whole thing is handled as if Ron lost Scabbers and is trying to save face. Harry never takes his side on any of this in the movie.

2) Crookshanks

Crookshanks never attacks Ron or anyone after the first time he chases Scabbers. He is insanely chill throughout the movie, which makes Ron’s accusations of him being a “bloodthirsty beast” land squarely into comic relief territory. Once again, there is no reason to take Ron’s side.

3) Hermione

Hermione is also far more chill in this movie compared to her book counterpart. She still claims that Ron’s concern is unwarranted, but due to changes to Ron-Scabbers relationship, this actually comes across as totally reasonable. There is no big explosive fights, no tears on Hermione’s side, she just seems annoyed about the whole thing at best.

4) Scabbers is gone

Scabbers’ disappearance is treated like a complete afterthought for both Ron and Hermione, compared to the total implosion of their relationship in the book. Hermione claims Ron lost Scabbers, Ron says he didn’t, but after what’s been shown in the movie, why should the viewer believe him? Either way, no need to take my word for it, just check out the next point.

5) Scabbers is found

Hey HP book fan? Hey, hey, yes you. Fuck you. See, Ron totally lost Scabbers. He’s just been chilling at Hagrid’s, no complicated evidence planted, no framing Crookshanks, just chilling with Hagrid, who happily gives him to Ron saying “Yo, you should take better care of your pets”. Hermione then immediately and calmly requires that Ron aplogise to her for being wrong. No follow-up on this ever happens.

6) Pigwidgeon

Haha. Who?

Funnily enough, the movie ends with Harry receiving Firebolt from Sirius. It would take exactly no effort for the script to have Hermione, since she’s already pointing out Buckbeak’s feather, to take out Pigwidgeon and say, “And I think this is for Ron”. But hey, that would be a good follow up, can’t have that!

So yes, they took one of the meatiest interpersonal dramas the Trio ever went through, which highlighted Ron and Hermione’s points of conflict and each of their strengths and weaknesses as people, and turned it into lacklustre barely-there plot fodder. Pitting Ron and Hermione against each other.

I have seen so many posts from #ronweasleydefensesquad where they bash Hermione’s behaviour and then proceed to praise Ron for his moments.

While I do believe that the squad has successfully highlighted Ron’s amazing character, why do they have to bring Hermione into this?

Let’s take a moment to imagine an au where Steve Kloves put Ron on a pedestal in the films. Ron is the same character in the books, but his portrayal in the films glorify him. He is portrayed by a super model, all his embarrassing moments are removed in the films, his flaws are narrowed down and he is the best dueller in the trio. In the films, Hermione’s flaws and bad moments would be intensified and is the damsel in distress. People hate Hermione as she is so dull, in comparison to perfect Ron. These people pick up the books and realise that Ron isn’t perfect. He is loveable, funny and brave, but he is insecure, jealous and blames himself for everything. His bad moments weren’t shown in the films. But that’s ok, that’s what makes him human. However, people notice that Hermione was an integral part of the trio and was supremely talented. Despite her flaws, people adored her and started a hermione defense squad to brush away hermione haters from the films. However, Ron is being used negatively by the fandom. There are posts that expose all the times he made mistakes and was awful. These same posts are contrasted with the hermione posts to highlight her wonderful moments with “unlike ron” in them. Ron fans feel that they are being personally attacked (because they love the character) Even though they appreciate hermione being defended, why the hell does ron appear in every post negatively?

My casing point is that people who VIRULENTLY criticize hermione are acting almost the same as Ron bashers. This does not go out to every single person who criticized Hermione Hermione can be pretty terrible and she’s not everyone’s cup of tea. However, you are bordeline treating her like Ron bashers treated Ron (sad, right?)

I think I have come up with a theory. I dont think It seems that people can’t find fulfillment in shipping Romione unless if they make Ron or Hermione the bad person in the relationship. I haven’t seen a single post that criticizes Hinny, Jily, or Ronks this way. Why is this the case for Romione? Some fans said that it’s to defend Ron as he was downplayed by the writers. If that’s the case, why does no one say the same for Ginny and Harry? I rarely see posts that drag or criticize the other person in the relationship which honestly proves they are mature.

Now I have to say that I find fulfillment in reading posts that explore more of Hermione’s flaws, but only when it’s a stand alone post.

One last though, but why is Hermione always criticized in Ron posts. It would be fine if they weren’t together but these posts honestly seem like a contest for who is the better relationship in the relationship. Why not contrast Ron to Draco or another character. And finally, I’ve seen Hermione been called out for her shit but other characters literally get away with the same things. But that’s ok, Draco Malfoy’s behaviour is forgiven because of the way he was raised, Ginny acts like a bully a number of times, but that’s ok because this proves she’s feisty. If the fandom didn’t act like big ass hypocrites, I would be more calm about it.

All of you complained that Ron was being too criticized, he was being nit-picked for his actions despite the fact that he is a pretty awesome guy, with just a few flaws. But guess what, all of you are criticizing Hermione, nit-picking every single thing she did and said, just like what Ron-bashers did to Ron. Smh

My real issue is that people call out hermione’s actions and criticize her in order to contrast her to ron and to prove how generous and kind he is. I am the first and last person to say that Hermione is one of the most flawed characters I’ve ever read about and she is far from perfect. However, is that a bad thing? Not really. Hermione has done quite a lot of questionable things in the past seven books (worst one was when she attacked ron with the birds.) But I like how flawed she is because I rarely read about a female character whose flaws only include clumsiness, stubbornness and a bad-temper. But Hermione is openly flawed and taught me that no one is really perfect. Same thing can be said for Ron and Harry. Hermione can be abrasive, ruthless and bossy, but she is also a girl who dearly loved her friends and was ready to make any sacrifice for them, despite all her flaws. Same can be said for Ron and Harry.
