my piece for the Hemisphere: a Witch Hat Atelier seasons themed zine! thank you for having me! they're having a leftovers sale until stock runs out 🖋🍀🌷🍁❄🌧 WIPs + inspiration board + symbolism under the cut! got some requests to put this on my inprnt! the site has sales very often & you can grab it as a small or big size print.

I had a pretty good idea of the composition from the get-go. I took inspiration from art nouveau (primarily Alphonse Mucha), German fairy tales, and some 1920s perfume ads. I wanted the girls to look like fairies, akin to The Root Children by Sibylle von Olfers.

Olly just didn't work out in this drawing due to time restraints. I do love him very much though.

I actually kinda stopped making illustrations like these (including the TGAA/DGS tarot card + TGAA/DGS zine pieces a while back) because they were starting to get very hard on my arm, as I had an RSI (repetitive strain injury) a few years back during school. (Not putting the onus on the zines at all ofc! I genuinely love working with zine projects! it's def a me thing WAHAHAHA. my style was getting too anime and too detailed for my liking and everything was just taking forever to finish ngl. but I didn't have time to experiment with a more simple style outside of all of my deadlines)

I think that realizing you need to stop is okay. It's something that Shirahama teaches us in her story and I want to learn to take it to heart.

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD (for those who havent read the story I guess)

each character's symbolism:

- Coco - spring, clovers - Coco is the quintessential spring girl, and I wanted her to symbolize new beginnings, and oh boy did Coco bring a big one. The four leaf clover in particular symbolizes luck and good fortune - to some characters, Coco may have brought fortune, to others her presence brings misfortune, take that as you will.

- Tetia - summer, gladiolus - the name "gladiolus" comes from the Latin word "gladius", meaning "sword", based on the shape of the flower. you can interpret it as "you pierce my heart", perfect for a girl like Tetia, who has a contagious energy, with a romantic and grandiose nature.

- Agott - autumn, marigold - I read somewhere marigolds symbolize strength and power, perfect for our little magical powerhouse Agott. They can also symbolize jealousy (yellow flowers in particular have this association), which reflects on her rivalry with Coco in the beginning.

- Riche - winter, snowdrop - The white color of snowdrops has a strong connotation to innocence, which reflects on Riche's wish to stay a child forever. It can also symbolize rebirth and new beginnings (like Coco's clovers), as the snowdrop is the first flower to bloom in the spring, when the snow has not yet melted. I wanted the concept of "rebirth" to associate with Riche's friendship with Euini, and of his sort of "rebirth" into a new being.

- Qifrey - he does not have a flower per se, but as the caregiver and educator of the four girls, he represents the rainy season - precipitation being the one thing that binds all of these seasons together. (Note some areas of the world do not have a rainy season like where I live). I think somewhere along the line I wanted to put hydrangeas behind him, to really bring out the "rainy" theme, but the thought probably got lost somewhere in translation...

- bg flowers - honestly I just picked whatever. white lily, daffodil, hydrangea, zinnia, tulip

I still can't believe that I was able to meet Bojan, Nace and Jan last weekend (how is it already a week since Malmö OVO) :'D

They were so freaking humble and easy to talk to?!? 🥺🥺🥺

Bojan and I 'are you'ed each other for at least half a minute xD The love is really stored in the Bojan - the way he just gives you his entire attention when you talk to him OVO Plus he remembered my Häärijä cosplay from Helsinki, let me die happy now 😭🥺

Nace is such a lovely turtle dad proudly talking about his babies (I can relate to how much he talks with his hands) and his laugh is even more contagious in person 🥹 Loved that we in Gothenburg ended up wondering over the question 'what is each JO members signature picture pose' together; Nace and I showing off the Jan pose for the last picture x'D

Speaking of Jan, the poor boy had lost his beanie in Gothenburg (not pictured) so he had a scarf on his head :'3 he too was very nice talking to and me and another dane managed to spread the 'please come to Denmark' propaganda 😂

Jan and Nace both got little 2 min. pen doodles from me that I drew with frozen fingers and in a rush (didn't know how long they'd stay) and bless their heart for being genuinely happy to receive them :'D Nace did also get a second Malmö sticker just so I could see his reaction x'D (I'd sent Bojan off with gifts to all the boys during soundcheck and Nace confirmed he had gotten his and it was on his laptop I believe :'3 <33)

(Since I ran to Bojan I was too late to meet Kris in Malmö, and Jure stayed by the bus smoking which I respect)

I think for as long as the war will be going on she’ll barely be focusing on anything else. Sure, Farah will be nurturing the bonds she has with her brothers and sisters and strengthen those to the best of her ability, but she really couldn’t care less about a romantic relationship. She’s far too busy for that sort of thing. While she would treat you as an equal as long as you help her out with no ulterior motive, she won’t really respond properly to you wanting to be in a relationship with her. Even though she might promise you such once the war is done and over with, once her people are free and won’t need to fear that sort of oppression anymore. While she may like you, a lot too, she doesn’t think she can be in a relationship with you as of right now, so she’ll simply swallow down all her emotions until the time is right, until she can focus on building a life of her own. Yes, she enjoys those late night talks where she tells you things she couldn’t even tell her dearest friends, but at the same time she really can’t be committed to you as she is. While she may feel somewhat bad about it, she knows it’s probably for the best, so she doesn’t do anything to change it either. Doesn’t mean it can’t hurt a bit, though. Farah fights plenty of battles, and if you’re able to, she doesn’t mind fighting them alongside you either. However, if you’re more interested in patching people up after a particularly rough operation, then she won’t stop you. In fact, there’s a good chance she’ll even seek you out and ask you to treat her wounds, just so she could spend some time with you.

While she may fight for her people and their freedom above all else, I think she’d also subconsciously fight for you as well. Her performance would improve a bit, she’d be more fierce and feisty, as well as more cunning, on the battlefield, all because she wants to be able to see a nicer tomorrow alongside you. She sort of does want to be with you, but the war just makes it impossible. You’ve got both hands full with it and don’t have time for anything else. The war comes before anything else. Whatever comes after? She’ll simply wing it, as long as it doesn’t involve any more fighting.

However, once all the fighting is over, once the both of you have survived the hardest battle, she’ll invite you over for a drink or two, just to reminisce on all of those times. Thinking back on it, while it may have been anything but fun, it did get the both of you to bond with each other. She’s truly grateful to have had you around all this time, to cheer her up when she was at her lowest. While she won’t be able to repay you for everything you’ve done for her, she’ll assure you that she will do just about anything for you, your bond has just become that strong. And around that time, during that evening, she will also confess her feelings to you, how she’s been feeling this entire time. Farah doesn’t expect you to reciprocate, she just wanted to tell you so you know just how special you are to her. However, she definitely won’t object to you actually saying yes and wanting to be her partner. She’d be overjoyed. The wars are finally over, after all this time she can be selfish just once and focus on herself a little bit. Will also promise to take good care of you, just as she has been all this time anyway. Considering how loving she can be, you really don’t have to doubt her in that regard either.
