i think that we often do forget that the black brothers were not inherently good people; they were more or less morally grey, more or less leaning towards the good/bad side. it's hard to fully unlearn beliefs of your family (and i think that many people resonate with this statement, whether we are talking about fictional characters or real, fully-fledged people), and i think that morally grey characters are far more interesting than people who are inherently good or evil.
sirius black
many people (including myself) would say that sirius is leaning more towards the lighter end of the spectrum, given the fact that he actively tried to unlearn his family's beliefs, he ran away from home at the age of sixteen and decided to move in with people who were recognized in the wizarding society as good people, he joined the order as soon as he finished hogwarts, and, even after the unfortunate ending of the first war, he decided to join the order again and stay inside a house that was never a home for him, to ensure the safety of himself, the order, and harry, too. his last act was the attack at the ministry where he found himself, despite the fact that he was supposed to stay inside grimmauld place, and where he died.
however, we cannot deny that sirius, too, had slip-ups. one of them was the prank (to review what happened, essentially, he told snape how to get past the whomping willow, therefore revealing remus' secret to him). in this situation, sirius shows recklessness and a lack of thought towards the consequences that his actions could have towards not only himself, but severus snape and remus, too. his behavior showed a lack of altruism, and a lack of consideration for the people around him, being willing to put them in danger for whatever may have been the reason.
another one would be swm (snape's worst memory), where james is a part of the action too, but the tormenting of snape was unjustified (j&s started the fight, and snape responded) and ended badly. now, i am in no way a defender of severus snape's, but both j&s and him were acting based on either boredom (the aforementioned) and a need for revenge caused by the actions that had happened against him (the latter).
in canon, we are also shown that he does not exactly think the words he says, and the effect they have on people. (“You're less like your father than I thought.” — GoF). i think that sirius had no right to say this to harry, who was just trying to make sure that sirius would be safe. what we need to remember is that, by the time of the action of GoF took place, sirius was still on the run, and the ministry was still looking for him; it would have been dangerous for both him and harry (and whoever might have joined them) to go out of hiding and go meet up somewhere near hogwarts (hogsmeade). harry's response to sirius' request was logical, and sirius' response was reckless and not well-thought.
regulus black
we do not have enough information on regulus to fully state on which side of the spectrum he finds himself on. however, he was known to have held the same beliefs that his parents did and to be an open voldemort supporter (The Slytherin colours of emerald and silver were everywhere, draping the bed, the walls and the windows. The Black Family crest was painstakingly painted over the bed, along with its motto Toujours Pur. Beneath this was a collection of yellow newspaper cuttings (of voldemort), all stuck together to make a ragged collage.)
therefore, to some extent, we can safely assume that he held the same beliefs as him (and, implicitly, his parents). the voldemort collage might have been on the wall for either research purposes or an act of devotion (this interesting perspective has been added by @/werewolfenthusiast) we cannot be sure; however, i am inclined to think that it might have been a mixture of both.
furthermore, i think the fact that regulus only started actively betraying and going against voldemort only after voldemort's actions had direct consequences on him and the ones he loved — kreacher, and this is shown in two acts; (wording taken off the hp wiki)
After becoming a Death Eater, Regulus began to consider abandoning Lord Voldemort, partly because his master mistreated and intended to kill the Black family's loyal house-elf Kreacher whilst setting up the security measures for one of his Horcruxes.
One day, Voldemort asked Regulus for the use of his house-elf, Kreacher and Regulus eagerly accepted as he wanted to please his master. Voldemort used Kreacher to test the defences around his locket Horcrux, leaving him to die afterwards. Kreacher was able to escape using house-elf magic and told Regulus of what had happened. Regulus worked out that the locket was a Horcrux and was the reason behind Voldemort's immortality. This was the deciding factor in Regulus's defection.
therefore, regulus has been shown to feel remorse and to start to realize the lenghts lord voldemort would go through only when his family (implicitly, his house-elf) were targeted. however, by researching horcruxes and trying to destroy one of them, regulus (un)willingly helped the wizarding world towards voldemort's fall.
all in all, the black brothers are two complex characters who, to some extent, held their family's beliefs and values. whether they had actively tried to unlearn them (sirius) or their betrayal was slow and silent (regulus), and neither of them can be fit in the category of inherently good or bad people.

Barty wanted to prove he could become an animagus too.
J: Is it some kind of cat?
S: No, Minnie is a cat that is some kind of fucking demon
J: Maybe it's a dog?
S: DOES THAT LOOK LIKE A DOG TO YOU PRONGS?
P: Guys it's a squirrel!
S: It's fucking evil is what it is, holy shit-
R: Squirrels don't get that big Pete
P: Well Sirius' animagus is massive as well-
S: My animagus is a Grimm, not a dog, Wormy, it's supposed to be big. Unless that squirrel is on bloody steroids-
R: The markings aren't right. Maybe it isn't native to the UK?
S: Maybe it's a native of Hell
J: It could be a boggart, do boggarts count as animals?
R: That's like asking if a werewolf counts as an animal
J: ... Do they?
P: I can't find anything in this book.
S: DONT BITE ME YOU LITTLE SHIT-
J: It has to be a kind of woodland creature right?
R: It's a racoon.
P: A what?
R: A racoon. They're not native to the UK.
S: GET IT OFF GETITOFFGETITOFF-
J: Is it venomous?
R: No.. but they are susceptible to rabies
S: SO HELP ME CROUCH I WILL THROW YOU OUT THIS FUCKING WINDOW-
P: What's rabies?
R: It's an animal disease, mate
J: Can werewolves get rabies? ... can I get rabies?

The worst thing about Wolfstar is that Remus’ mediocrity and negligence is blamed on Sirius to facilitate a false equivalence that hinges entirely on Remus having Sirius’ personality and Sirius having no personality.

Wolfstar Microfic: Scoundrel
“You bloody scoundrels, you come back here!”
Sirius and Remus were howling with laughter as they ran, each with pockets full of chocolate frogs from Honeydukes. They’d snuck in through the tunnel but gotten caught in the street, which was good; the secrecy of the tunnel wouldn’t be compromised.
They ran as long as their gangly 15-year old legs could carry them, half-limping from the effort of laughing all the while.
By the time they reached the outskirts of Hogsmeade, Sirius held out a hand to stop Remus and they paused, propping themselves up against a building while they caught their breath.
Sirius could feel the rush of adrenaline even after they’d stopped moving, still felt a burst of energy, a need to do something.
He grinned at Remus, ready to dare him to race all the way back to the castle, but Remus’ appearance caught his eye.
His cheeks and nose were ruddy from the wind, his hair was wild, and his robes were long past reasonable.
He looked wild.
Sirius couldn’t help but stare. It made him feel hot and bothered just to look at Remus like that.
Remus noticed Sirius staring, and his eyes went wide. Sirius couldn’t imagine what his own face looked like, but Remus must have seen something. Something he liked, because he stood up straighter and took two steps towards Sirius, backing him into the wall. Not close enough to be touching, but close enough to make Sirius’ energy rev even faster.
“Sirius,” Remus said suddenly, voice deeper and lower than Sirius was used to, “Dare me.”
“What?” Sirius began, even though he knew exactly what Remus was getting at, even as he took another step closer. Sirius felt his back hit the side of the building.
“Dare me,” Remus said, bringing a hand up to Sirius’ chest. The touch was featherlight, but enough to completely short circuit Sirius’ brain.
He lost all sense of words. He lost all sense of anything other than Remus’ gaze, and his body leaning in, and his hand.
Without speaking, Sirius put his hands on Remus’ hips and reeled him in, until they were only a hair’s breadth apart.
Remus laughed ever so lightly as he was pulled.
“I dare you,” Sirius replied.
Remus closed the distance, and it was the last thing either of them said for a while.

i put the marauders into a secret santa generator and then decided what they'd give to each other from that:
the budget is £15-20
emmeline got james broom wax and his father's own hair gel
sirius got remus a framed photo of himself in his underwear (not as a joke) and first edition of hardy's far from the maddening crowd. he went very far out of the budget but does not care.
mary got lily an emerald green summer dress
pandora got marlene a specially made red pick engraved with her initals and guitar strings
peter got dorcas a pair of new hiking boots & a pair of socks with quidditch balls and broomsticks on (consulted marlene on what to get them)
remus got peter a rat sized jumper he knitted himself and superman comic
marlene got emmeline a lavender encased in resin necklace
dorcas got mary a basket of material to make her own clothes & buttons skeins of thread
james got sirius a framed photo of himself in his underwear (as a joke) and a new motorbike helmet. he went a bit out of budget accidentally because he never looks at prices when buying things
lily got pandora a new cauldron and a book on combining spells/types of magic

what do u think all the marauders girls and guys would study in university?
for sirius, i was thinking psychology (i would like to study that too, in the bear future), or something related to arts. also, since i mentioned him being into STEM, i can see him doing something related to that too. however, i don’t see him getting a job related to his area of study.
i know for remus we, as a whole, have widely accepted that he would be into literature, and i agree with that. however, i can also see him going into either theatre and/or pedagogy. he’s a very patient and kind person, so he could excel with younger kids.
i can see james going towards either maths or something science related, or pedagogy. he’s quite patient with younger people and he gets along well with kids; with a few courses, he could do quite well in the field.
for peter i have two, very different ideas; music (i can see him in a high school band or musical before going to university or college, and thoroughly enjoying it), or engineering.
as i said before, lily is absolutely a STEM person, so i think she’d go to the university in that field, too; i am leaning towards a branch of biology. however, i can also see her going into medical school — she likes helping people, and she’s in a field she likes, too.
for dorcas, i’m leaning towards law. she has a very strong sense of justice and morally light/wrong. i can also see her going towards journalism or political science, all fields she likes and is passionate about.
mary would go for either design (and i think she would go for any kind of design, really, whether it’s interior, exterior or fashion). or media, or psychology; she would like to work with people and be able to interact with them, see the behavioural patterns.
thinking one up for marlene was the hardest for me, but i will settle for physical education and sports. i think she was huge on athletics and sports generally speaking, and her high school coach encouraged her to strive towards something along those lines in the future (she got in with a sports scholarship, too)
