I think if aemon and jocelyn had had a son he would've been named aegon, in honour of the conqueror king and queen their whole line is descended from (though who knows if he intended for them to be married as well). I do think he, like any ruler, would've wanted to have 2 kids at least, the infamous heir and spare (especially after seeing so many of his relatives die so young), so i'm not so sure he intended for rhaenys to be his heir at first. Do you think they had the knowledge of how to prevent a pregnancy (other than choosing celibacy) or did they use stuff like moon tea? I believe they tried for another kid but had no luck, at which point aemon decided that either rhaenys would be his heir or her son (if i remember well, he was eager to have a grandson specifically and rhaenys herself accused jaehaerys of robbing her son of his birthright). I HATE that we don't know more about aemon, jocelyn and rhaenys 😭 imagine if the reason rhaenys decided to claim the red queen is precisely to prove to her father that "i will be your heir, i can rule, i'm a targaryen and a dragonrider. I'm 13 and you aren't getting another child but you don't need one cause you have me". Like maybe she hears from alysanne that jaehaerys is getting impatient with aemon's lack of male heir and maybe even trying to arrange a marriage for rhaenys and that is what makes her take action. Or imagine she claimed meleys AFTER her dad promised to make her his heir and as giant f u to grandpa who likely had something to do with his own daughters not getting an egg/dragon but not rhaenys cause she's gonna be QUEEN
I wonder if rhaenys was given an egg when she was born. I don't remember if it was mentioned in the book but imagine if she was given an egg but it didn't hatch. Imagine she got to keep the egg and it ended up hatching for laenor 😍
It's a fair estimation to believe that, had Aemon and Jocelyn had a son, he would have been called Aegon if they intended that son to be the heir. But there's no real reason to do so. Not in the way that naming Rhaenys "Rhaenys" was a move. Unlike Rhaenys, there was no reason to name a son after a former King. They have nothing to prove. Aemon and Jocelyn could have called that child anything they liked and it would have been totally cool, just as Jaehaerys never calls any of his sons after "Aegon".
And, actually, Baelon calls his son "Aegon". The third son that Alyssa died giving birth to, that only survived until nearly a year old. So, who knows?
An heir and a spare is a safe bet, anyone would tell you that, so it's perplexing that Rhaenys was an only child. But we can't know the reasons why. We don't know if they had moon tea or other contraceptives. Whether it was a deliberate choice or just bad fortune. We also have no knowledge if Jocelyn had any miscarriages or stillbirths. Such information, because Aemon's line does not inherit the Iron Throne or carry on in any meaningful way (i.e as a Targaryen branch), was likely deemed unimportant by the Maesters and historians, in comparison to others. It's like we don't know anything much about Rhaenys's pregnancies or births. It's not relevant to the overall story, unfortunately.
Aemon and Rhaenys both refer to her first pregnancy as being a boy. I don't think that's anything significant. Obviously, it would be a wish of Aemon and Corlys, and everyone else. It's just easier if it's a boy. It's not just Rhaenys that needs an heir, it's Driftmark. So to wish for a son is the obvious solution. And then when Rhaenys is screaming at her grandfather, she uses the potential of it being a boy to attempt to sway him or to make him feel awful which... you know, serves him right.
It's funny, even if Jaehaerys was stressed about Rhaenys as being the only heir of his son, Aemon never seems to fall out of favour. When Rhaenys is 7, he's made Master of Laws. He's frequently at the King's side, in war and in peace, on progress. If Jaehaerys was displeased, he never showed it enough for it to be reported.
I think Rhaenys got an egg. It would be something not just down to Jaehaerys, but Alysanne as well. And she'd have her parents in her corner as well. But we don't know. It's not mentioned with any of the other grandchildren: Viserys, Daemon, Aemma. I'll put it this way, I don't see any reason why she wouldn't. And I don't see any reason why, if she didn't and the others did, it would not be mentioned. But we don't have enough concrete evidence surrounding the practice to know who would and who wouldn't be given an egg. But no cradle eggs were hatched in that generation. No cradle eggs, that we know, hatched in the previous generation either. There's enough to propose Meleys was an unclaimed dragon or hatchling for Alyssa, as opposed to an egg.
If Rhaenys did have an egg, then she would have only claimed Meleys once it had died. Cradle eggs often just... died. Turned to stone. Didn't hatch. I doubt Rhaenys had Seasmoke as her cradle egg. Assuming, of course, that Seasmoke was a cradle egg. We have no information on that either.

13, 17, 18 and 19 for - naturally- all of them 😍😍😍
Thank you for asking, and for bearing with me! 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Nickname Headcanon
Artemis - I call Artemis “Artie” all the time. This actually happens very rarely in canon. In fact, the first time anyone actually called her that in a story was when Charlie said it in the bar scene in the Rockstar AU, in a scene that you wrote! I thought it was cute, so now Charlie calls her that in her usual canon, too.
Ethel - only Ethel’s closest friends and family are allowed to call her Effy.
Jim - only started going by Jim rather than Jimmy once he got to school. Ethel and Ivy still call him Jimmy.
Héloïse - Héloïse’s family have never done nicknames. She thinks they’re rather cute, however, and would have quite liked one growing up. As a result, she gives her daughter Lucienne the childhood nickname “Lilou”.
Ophelia - Doesn’t understand the point of nicknames. Why confuse the matter? There are no nice ways to shorten Ophelia anyway.
Saffron - has been called enough names by mean children to last her a lifetime. Would rather stick to her own name from now on.
Rory - goes by his surname or just “Tav” a lot at school. Tends to shorten everyone’s names for ease. If it can be shortened, it will be. Except for you, Dyldo. You get more syllables, not less.
Zadie - had the childhood nickname “Duckling” from before she was even born, because her then 4-year-old sister Phoebe thought that she would hatch from an egg like a chick or a duckling.
Dante - Dante doesn’t tend to use nicknames, but his first response to anyone telling them his name is to ask what it means. Even if people don’t know the meaning, they tend to share something about themselves. It’s as good an ice breaker as any.
Soft Spot Headcanon
Artemis - doesn’t really like children. Definitely doesn’t want her own children. Has a soft spot for several of her friends’ children, particularly her three godchildren, Lily Potter, and Reva Amari.
Ethel - …Lysander Mercury.
Jim - has a soft spot for anyone who struggles to get their words out coherently. He had a stutter throughout his childhood, and knows exactly how frustrating it can be.
Héloïse - cats. Héloïse loves cats.
Ophelia - her immediate family is her only real soft spot.
Saffron - B 🐰 U 🐰 N 🐰N 🐰 I 🐰 E 🐰 S
Rory - Always wanted a dog. Was never allowed a dog. Was allowed fish instead. Has soft spots for both.
Zadie - Zadie doesn’t really like reading that much, but she will make an exception for illustrated special editions.
Dante - loves tipsy people.
Favourite Possession (I’m not including wands!)
Artemis - if Fergus counts as a possession, it’s him. If not, the polaroid camera Madam Rosmerta bought her for her seventeenth birthday, closely followed by an enchanted burgundy notebook and an old lilac cardigan that once belonged to Rowan (though she eventually gave this away).
Ethel - her collection of porcelain cows.
Jim - his sketchbooks and his beehives. Don’t make him choose.
Héloïse - can you count your husband as a possession? No? Fine. Her engagement ring.
Ophelia - the house elf her husband bought her for a wedding present. This was the moment she knew that she had made it into the upper echelons of wizarding society.
Saffron - her bunnies and her crystal collection. Also, the full-sized disco ball she has hanging up in her bedroom at her dad’s house.
Rory - his broomstick.
Zadie - her first pair of pointe shoes. Now completely worn out, of course, but kept for sentimental reasons.
Dante - the St. Christopher his mother bought him before he left to go to Hogwarts.
Favourite Photograph
I answered this one for Artemis here and for the HPMA kids here!
Ethel - one that Lysander took of her, Selene, and both of their daughters one summer at the Fraser estate.
Jim - photo of his daughter’s christening.
Héloïse - one of her and Jim by the Radcliffe camera, taken the day she left Oxford University.
Ophelia - the first photo of all three of her children taken together. She took it with her when she abandoned the Nott family home.
