Jesus taught that your highest priority must be your relationship with Him. If anything detracts you from that relationship, that activity is not from God. God will not ask you to do something that hinders your relationship with Christ.

girl do you have a bible reading plan you recommend. or literally any way to trick myself into reading the bible more. I've been feeling so convicted lately about needing to actually read my own bible more instead of just listening to sermons and reading books *about* it, but it's so /hard/ to focus long enough to stick with it long-term. and then I start overthinking every little aspect of every verse I read and falling down research rabbit holes whenever I try to look up word definitions and further context for stuff, and I just get so bogged down in the details instead of just trying to absorb the stories and messages God's communicating through them that I give up again.

Oh girl I was there legit last week, I completely gotcha. Hmm.. I've started back on a study called Experiencing God (by Henry Blackaby) and it's been pretty neat because it gives you verses to study at the end. Honestly, I almost never follow a study, it's more like reading through a book at a time and picking it apart (lightly) and asking myself four questions (What is the passage about? What was happening historically at the time? How does the truth apply to God, you, other believers, and finally, non-believers? How can you apply this to your life.)
I'm pretty terrible at keeping up with Bible study as well, so feel free to pop into my DMs if you'd like to study together sometime if you'd be interested in that

Quote of the Day
People who make decisions based merely on what seems most advisable to them will inevitably choose something inferior to God’s best. Jesus, the ultimate model for the Christian life, did not rely on His own best thinking, but depended completely on His heavenly Father for wisdom in everything.

[Henry Blackaby]

Psalm 73:28
But as for me, the nearness of God is my good;
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
That I may tell of all Your works.
When Holy God draws near in true revival, people come under terrible conviction of sin. The outstanding feature of spiritual awakening has been the profound consciousness of the Presence and holiness of God. Henry Blackaby

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
Silver on the Tree by Susan Cooper
Enneagram II by Richard Rohr
Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
Might As Well Be Dead by Rex Stout
Experiencing God by Henry T. Blackaby & Claude V. King
The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
The Starless Sea might be a new favourite; it definitely merits a reread to catch all the things that were hidden the first time. Silver on the Tree is a perennial favourite, and that wrapped up my "real time" TDIR cycle. (For now...!) I don't usually do audio, but I did for Daisy Jones because it was highly recommended by a friend, and it's true! Great experience. And it's summer mysteries time!

quick observation
Tumblr media
Hello!  I just returned from Cuba last night, and I want to make just a few observations about life, freedom and our calling from God.
You and I have a few things in common.  God is still God.  No matter where we are or what is going on we have God who loves us and has a plan for our lives.  His plan includes us in His plan.  And His plan includes our influence on the people around us.
How is that?  We must listen.  We must watch.  We must get involved.
Ephesians 4:11-15  NLT
Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.
You have a gift from God.  It might not be the same gift God has given me or given someone else, but you are gifted from God.  And we have to do something with that gift after we discover what it is.
Your gift involves people.  God loves people.  He made the church, the world and us for people  That is His greatest love.  There is nothing more important than using what we have and who we are to serve others.
Make sure you are focusing on taking care of yourself.  Make sure you also take care of the people around you in love.
As Henry Blackaby said years ago in his book Experiencing God, “watch to see where God is working and join Him.”  He is working in the lives of the people around us.  That is the place where we are to plug in and make a difference.  Realize that being with Jesus will leave us and others changed.  If we are not changed, we haven’t been with Jesus.
Hope that makes sense.
Spend some time today with God.  Hear His voice.  Watch what He does, and do what He leads you to do.  He is going to use your gift and His church to change the world around you.
Keep growing up in the Lord.  Let’s influence others as God has influenced us!

Who Will You Follow?
"But Elisha replied, 'As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!'"1
Elijah was God's faithful prophet to the people. He lived obedient to God's Word and served where he was sent. However, there was a time in Elijah's life where he felt that he was the only faithful prophet remaining! It seemed that everyone around him was worshipping idols, and I can imagine it felt exhausting at times not having anyone like-minded walking alongside him. This is when God gave Elijah the instruction to choose Elisha as his successor. Elisha was called in 1 Kings 19:19 and spent the next several years learning from Elijah and following him wherever he went.
Elisha seemed to love Elijah like a father. Despite Elijah telling Elisha to stay behind before he was taken into heaven, Elisha refused to leave him. Perhaps, he wanted to hear one more word of wisdom, see one more miracle, and spend every last bit of time with his mentor and friend. Elisha witnessed when Elijah was taken into heaven, and at that moment Elijah's responsibilities fell on him. As God had said, Elisha would now be His prophet to the people and God would be with Elisha just as he had been with Elijah.
Henry Blackaby said, "Watch to see where God is working and join Him in His work".
Where do you see God working around you? And WHO is he using to do that work? The people we choose to follow should reflect God's character and help us grow in Christ. In the same way you should stay away from influences who will steer you off the right path. Ask for God's guidance in choosing friends and mentors.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, give me wisdom to follow those whom you are working in and though, and who will lead me closer to you. Help me, also, be a friend and encourager to others who are trying to serve you, and that, together, we can follow you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus's name, amen.
2 Kings 2:2b (NLT).
