Animal of the Day!
Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Wildlife Conservation Society)
Conservation Status- Critically Endangered
Habitat- Southeast Asia
Size (Weight/Length)- 3 kg; 190 cm; 90 cm wingspan
Diet- Fruit
Cool Facts- The helmeted hornbill is one of the largest species of hornbill, showing off its bare throat patch for all to see. Males sport red throat patches while females are a more subdued green. The casque on the top of the hornbill’s head is solid and thought to be used for combat instead of increasing the volume of calls. Males are extremely territorial, especially when it comes to their mates. Males will collide headfirst while midair and attempt to knock their opponent from the sky. Sadly, due to hunting for the ivory in their casques and loss of habitat, there are only about 100 helmeted hornbills left in Thailand and a slightly increased population in Indonesia.
Rating- 12/10 (Pro American football player.)

Yup… that’s a dinosaur. The Silvery-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes brevis) uses its immense beak to dine on a variety of snacks, including fruit, insects, bats, and even smaller birds. It’s found in parts of eastern Africa, including Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Like other hornbills, its beak is topped with a helmet-like structure called a casque which helps amplify its barking calls. This casque is made of keratin, which is the same protein that makes up your hair, skin, and nails! Exquisite Helmeted Hornbill skull carving auctioned in 2007. Late Qing.
The inscription reads "殷勤寄牛女,河漢正相望". These are lines from the poem of Yuan Zhen (元稹), Chinese novelist and poet of the middle Tang.
Such a carving was a rare and valuable collector's item. Artifacts of this kind did not appear in China until the early Ming. Precious hornbill ivory could be imported from Burma, Siam and Malay Peninsula. Mostly expensive small accessories were made of hornbill ivory; the use of a whole skull is rather atypical. Currently, the trade of hornbill ivory is prohibited by law.
Despite the apparent massiveness, the skull is pretty light, since the bone outgrowth has a porous structure. Outside, it is covered with a gleaming scarlet ivory-like substance.

So this one is late due to hand pain, but here is my Fekthrud. My brain first went to some sort of parrot which turned out to be correct, but I wanted to give it something a little substantial skull wise to stand up to an iron rod. Then I did a quick search of Indian birds and found hornbills, which I had been aware of but never really looked into before. I think they can mimic some human speech too. So, Helmeted Hornbill, Great Hornbill, and Grey Hornbill were used for references.

Round 1, Poll 57
Helmeted Hornbill vs Hairy Hermit Hummingbird
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sources under cut
Helmeted Hornbill Propaganda
"I submitted it to the weird bird tournament and it didn’t get in but the great hornbill did! if more people knew about the fact there was an even weirder hornbill than that one it would’ve gotten in for sure"
Its primary habitat is evergreen forest, especially the foothills, but they will used some selectively logged forests. These birds are non-migratory and territorial, and will form small groups of around 10-14 non-breeding and immature birds who search together for food.
Hairy Hermit Hummingbird Propaganda
"All the other hummingbirds are called really sparkly sound names like ‘wood nymph’ or ‘emerald’ or ‘topaz’ or ‘comet tailed’ or so and then there’s the hairy hermit. It’s not like other girls /joking but also"
Also known as: Rufous-breasted Hermit; a widespread species of hummingbird, they are common in much of their range, from Southern Brazil to the Northern edge of Panama.
Hermit hummingbirds are typically associated with heliconia flowers, using their long, decurved bill to easily access the nectar. This species in particular also uses heliconias as a nesting platform.

Great Green Macaw (Critically Endangered) is often captured in South America for the caged bird trade.
One of the reasons why the trade in wild parrots continues is that it is very profitable, with particularly beautiful or rare species selling for up to US$1,000 or more. Although many birds are traded within the country of origin, international parrot smuggling is very common. The parrot trade in Mexico is largely driven by the demand for exotic birds in the US, where an estimated 4–14% of Mexican wild-captured parrots (up to 9,400 birds) are smuggled each year.
Whether it’s establishing and guarding safe havens for the Helmeted Hornbill, helping parrot-trappers to establish alternative, sustainable ways of making a living, or supporting authorities to enforce laws, we invest in long-term, sustainable solutions that factor in the needs of both nature and local people. Much of our partner work documents the scale of the criminality locally and how it is joined up to transnational networks of banditry. This helps governments and law enforcement understand and acknowledge the vast scale and devastating impact at play and encourages them to target the necessary legal and enforcement resources appropriately.

I love birds and I love fucked up emotional art with birds but I gotta do it with other birds too... I love crows but there's a bird called cock of the rock.... Flamingos and survival......some fucked up little bit that people point and laugh but I know he can do it shoebill can be in a work that makes me stare at the wall,,, are not helmeted hornbills and chickens both daughters of dinosaurs?? The Rufous potoo bring me to tears.... Are they not all as sacred as the vulture tends to the dead?? As a parrot longs for the jungle? Don't they all desire flight as much as I?? Do they remember when their scales turned to feathers?? I need a harpy eagle tell me
