Because it’s clear that being “the last public space” isn’t a privilege. It’s a sign that something has gone terribly wrong.
At the time, countless articles asked if new technology meant “the death of the public library.” Instead, the institution completely transformed itself. Libraries carved out a new role providing online access to those who needed it. They abandoned the big central desk, stopped shushing patrons, and pushed employees out onto the floor to do programming. Today, you’ll find a semester’s load of classes, events, and seminars at your local library: on digital photography, estate planning, quilting, audio recording, taxes for seniors, gaming for teens, and countless “circle times” in which introverts who probably chose the profession because of their passion for Victorian literature are forced to perform “The Bear Went over the Mountain” to rooms full of rioting toddlers.
In the midst of this transformation, new demands began to emerge. Libraries have always been a welcoming space for the entire community. Alexander Calhoun, Calgary’s first librarian, used the space for adult education programs and welcomed “transients” and the unemployed into the building during the Depression. But the past forty years of urban life have seen those demands grow exponentially. In the late 1970s, “homelessness” as we know it today didn’t really exist; the issue only emerged as a serious social problem in the 1980s. Since then, as governments have abandoned building social housing and rents have skyrocketed, homelessness in Canada has transformed into a snowballing human rights issue. Meanwhile, the opioid crisis has devastated communities, killing more than 34,000 Canadians between 2016 and 2022, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. And the country’s mental health care system, always an underfunded patchwork of services, is today completely unequipped to deal with demand. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, from 2020 to 2021, Canadians waited a median of twenty-two days for their first counselling session. As other communal support networks have suffered cutbacks and disintegrated, the library has found itself as one of the only places left with an open door.
When people tell the story of this transformation, from book repository to social services hub, it’s usually as an uncomplicated triumph. A recent “love letter” to libraries in the New York Times has a typical capsule history: “As local safety nets shriveled, the library roof magically expanded from umbrella to tarp to circus tent to airplane hangar. The modern library keeps its citizens warm, safe, healthy, entertained, educated, hydrated and, above all, connected.” That story, while heartwarming, obscures the reality of what has happened. No institution “magically” takes on the role of the entire welfare state, especially none as underfunded as the public library. If the library has managed to expand its protective umbrella, it has done so after a series of difficult decisions. And that expansion has come with costs.

i still have no idea how to fathom that my beef, my crested gecko & first pet is gone, after 8 years together. i woke up yesterday to find he had passed overnight. he seemed to be lively & well the night before, so i'm not sure of the cause. i know i will always wish i could have done more for him, like i had hoped to hand build hides and climbs for him. but i know my goal was to give him as enriching and loving of a life as i possibly could before I even met him.
in autumn of 2015 i decided to get my first pet independently. as a kid I was a huge animal lover, unsurprisingly preferring their company over people. my mom was always excited to nurture a common interest, and jumped on any opportunity she could to get us pets to learn about all different kinds of animals, from our cat and dog, to fish, frogs, anoles, leopard geckos, even a rabbit & a pair of ducks.
i knew i wanted a reptile companion, but i wasn't sure which kind i'd get along with well and be best equipped to care for. i spent hours researching different types of geckos, bearded dragons, and beginner-level reptiles, until i decided on a crested gecko. i'd never seen creatures like them before, and i was floored to try something entirely new, but with Lots of information online to sift through if i was stumped.
late December arrived, and I was ready to find my new friend. I had a starter 10-gallon enclosure for a younger crestie, and plenty of fake plants and hides for him to explore and get acclimated. i opted to get him at a specialty reptile shop about 40 minutes away. i didn't have a name planned going in, and i think i immediately decided on "beef" when I saw it advertised at a deli.
my family was as smitten by him as I was. my sister loves trying to handle him as much as i did. my mom squealed in delight after i encouraged him to run across my laptop and he shat on the keyboard.
the next summer, my dad called me from a pet shop nearly frantic, asking what kind of vertical 20-gallon tank would best suit him. I was so grateful for the gift, stoked that he would have double the space to explore, hunt, and rest, and unexpectedly solving the "beef is arboreal in a horizontal enclosure," problem. his new tank was so large, i had to relocate it from a small unoccupied corner in my somehow even smaller room, to a hub right between my desk and my bed, always within my view and my reach. by then I'd decided to forego handling him, knowing it wasn't fair to cause him extra stress for my own entertainment if i couldn't do it consistently enough to make him comfortable with it. keeping him next to me was a much happier arrangement for us both.
from there, he moved with me to my first apartment. from tiny corner, to tiny corner, to Big sunny corner by a picture window with an unfortunately dismal view. later on i took up gardening and started my indoor hub next to his tank, extending his overgrown habitat until it took over the living room within a few months. the plants have ebbed and grown with the seasons and my ability to care for them. beef has watched me tend to them curiously for a couple years now. i was hoping to incorporate live plants into his enclosure, but I worried about pests, parasites, plant disease, and anything that could have harmed him. experimenting would be exciting, but ensuring his health came first and foremost.

everything ends, and all too soon. i find a vacancy in my chest and the joints in my hands aching, as i've spent a few hours on and off piecing this together. i haven't figured out what mourning looks like for me yet. but I know it's important to share the joy he brought to my life, and hope I could have returned a fraction of it.
i am going to bury him in my mom's backyard later this week, after i can prepare a proper little box for him with substrate, moss, and a heart shaped rock i found for him in the river, so many years ago now. i'm unsure of what to with the salt lamp next to his enclosure; it became his the moment i put it next to his tank and hr plastered himself to the glass wall in an attempt to merge with it. i'm going to handwrite this out and bury it with him.
it's been a difficult adjustment. i didn't sleep last night and i have so many memories to roll through. 8 years is a long ass time, and he's been with me through countless stresses & times of turmoil, successes and efforts, people who have come and gone, and gone, and gone. i wonder how many tears he's listened to me cry and vent to him, i wonder how many songs i invented for him on the spot while preparing a meal for him.

he will be the first family member i ever get to properly mourn. @ashtastica suggested holding a service to remember him, and I couldn't be more grateful. years ago, ash doodled beef if he were a dragon. the boy seemed to approve of his likeness when i initially showed him. i hope i can write or share with him, just the Tiniest Little Facsimile of how loved and adored he was by people all over the place. I have no idea how many people's lives he touched, honestly. he's always been a silly goober of a man, expertly climbing up but always tumbling down the heights of his enclosure... especially to the delight of our cat-children. from when I found him sitting at the end of my bed in December 2017, my cat doom was always fascinated to watch him play around his tank. in early 2022 Belmont joined the audience, and very recently Alkaline has, too. even in his absence they look for him.

I have struggled with mental health long before I ever became physically disabled. It seems strange that now I am the sickest I've ever been, and there is no cure, that I am mentally stable. In a good place, really.
Part of it is the fact that despite the lack of a cure, I still get treatment and have doctors that take me seriously. But if I'm being honest, I think the thing that stabilized me the most was leaving my job.
I'm lucky in that I can live with my parents, I was approved for disability on the first go, and have top notch insurance. Part of that is I'm fortunate to live in Massachusetts, which is one of the more socially progressive states and a medical hub for the whole country.
Being able to leave my job saved my life. When I had to go to work in both physical and mental anguish, there wasn't a day I didn't cry silently at my desk. All my life, because of ADHD, i struggled with the grind of school and then a job. Becoming disabled made it unbearable.
And yet, even when I knew I had to leave my job, it was so fucking scary. At the time I had insurance through work and I didn't know if I would get disability. It did help to get retirement money to live off of until disability came through.
Even though I am so much happier not working an office job, I still hope to work in some way. I want to try cat sitting just to get out of the house and make a few bucks. However since I left work I have also taken up new hobbies like gardening and baking.
All this said, when I see fellow disabled people struggling with disability and a job, often because they have no choice, it breaks my heart. We deserve to have a life that is fulfilling on our terms. It makes me angry that my state does well by it's people and other states withhold Medicare and Medicaid money and impose work requirements on welfare. It's fucked up.
We need to be doing so much better for the disenfranchised of our country. It can't be that you get healthcare and access to abortion, or decent welfare by virtue of the state you live in.

“Are we all ready? Is everything good? Impulse, are you good?” The Director fluttered around nervously, their buglike eyes gleaming under the studio lighting.
Impulse chuckled, a deep rumbling that rattled the floorboards. He sat up from the splintered ruins of the chair he’d been using, and stood to his full height.
In his demon form, his seven horns scraped the ceiling, leaving gouges in the oak beams overhead. He towered over everyone else on the set, taking a step forward that shook the ground.
Impulse reached down and scooped up a giant red tie, throwing it over his neck and doing it up with a practiced motion. The breeze from the flapping fabric damn near knocked the tiny fae director out of the air, and Impulse pulled it through to complete the knot a second later.
“Yeah, I’m good.” He said, swallowing a glob of utterly toxic spit. If it had hit the ground, falling out of his messy maw of spiked teeth, everyone in the room would have gotten very, very sick.
“Excellent. Places, please! Everyone get into position!” The Director shouted, far louder than his small size would suggest.
Impulse shuffled his wings uncomfortably. He had four of them, poking through his neatly-tailored suit coat. The suit was just as massive as he was, covering up his coal-black scales and wrapping smartly around all fourteen of his arms.
He lolloped over to the desk in the middle of the plain white set, setting his four tails down on the floor behind it. There wasn’t a chair- more of a jumbo size steel stool. Then again, a regular chair would have posed issues what with the tails and all, so.
“Okay, are we ready? Places! Places! Impulse, are you good?”
Impulse scooped up the sheaf of papers on his desk. They, too, were scaled up- just like everything else on the studio set.
He glanced over his notes, and gave the director a thumbs-up with one of his many arms.
“Alright. And…ACTION!”
Impulse smiled down the camera lens, letting all fourteen of his blank yellow eyes fix on it.
“Hello, everyone! It’s me, your friendly neighborhood Plague Lord, back again with another public health PSA from our friends at Mojang.”
Impulse grinned and shuffled his papers again, more for effect than anything else.
“This month, we’re encouraging all at-risk players to head on down to the Hub Core Clinic and make sure they’re up to date on their rabies shot! What’s rabies, you might be asking yourself?”
Impulse grinned, revealing hundreds of hypodermic teeth arranged at all angles in his massive mouth. Yellow spit, laced with disease, started to drip from his gums, and he chuckled.
“Rabies is a disease unique to mammals. There’s no cure, and once symptoms present, the victim is effectively dead. I love it. One of the classics! If you get it, you can expect a period of soreness and flulike symptoms…followed by tremors, delirium, hallucinations, acute fear of water, coma, and death. If your dog gets it, you can expect foaming at the mouth, possible delusions, rabid behaviour, and THEN coma and death. Bats can carry it, too! Great, right? I think so. But you might not.”
Impulse leaned back in his chair.
“So, Plague Lord, you may be saying. I don’t want to get that. Am I at risk? Well, here’s a simple test: are you warm blooded and have you had or do you have nipples and a belly button? Does any member of your family have those features? If the answer is yes, you might be in an at-risk group! Make sure you get yourself down to the Core Clinic for a consult with one of our trained staff. There’s no waiting and it’s completely free.”
Impulse leaned forward in his chair, placing every one of his clawed hands on the desk. The wood creaked, and he spread his wings wide.
Hundreds of yellow pustules boiled up across his body, a bio hazardous ooze starting to seep out of some of them. He lleered at the camera.
“Or don’t. Go on, friends. Make my day.”
“CUT!” The director shouted, “Impulse, that was perfect. Spot on! I think that’s the take.”
“You want to do a few more?” Impulse offered, “I got time.”
“Yeah, just to be safe, I think we will. Alright, places, everyone! Take two!”

Covid Day 3 (apparently? What happened to the other days? I’ll tell you under a cut cause damn I’m long-wimdy):
Day 0: Thursday, when I started having symptoms (scratchy throat, sinus congestion, achy joints though to be fair one of those is a jammed up finger from my fall two months ago, and a temp of 99, which for me is actually a bit high). Went to work anyway LIKE A MORON, but stayed closed up in my office. About noon, when no one showed up to my online workshop (one person tried to login on mobile twice then gave up) and I realized I could barely get through it anyway, I took a Covid test I keep in my desk drawer--negative. Okay, so maybe the flu? Even though I had my flu and covid booster a few weeks ago, maybe it’s a strain they didn’t catch? I went to student health. Did I tell you my campus has declared we are “post-covid” and they aren’t even doing masks? And now you need an appointment, my primary doc had the week off, and the lady said “oh it’s probably just this bad cold that’s been going around anyway” *GGGRRR* I say fuck it, call it a day, run to Walmart to grab some meds and soup and decide I’m taking Friday off too.
Day 1: Friday. Still feel like crud, though the cough is starting to be productive at least, the temp is up and down but mainly in the upper 98-99 range. Sit in virtually on a faculty meeting, then a phone meeting with the estate attorney re: Dad’s will. Hubby is in a tree stand all day so I take care of myself. Fix some veggie beef soup and a roll for lunch, PBJ for a snack, and some stir-fry Hubs made the night before for dinner. Plus LOADS of ginger tea with honey and lemon. Hope I’m improving by Saturday because a work friend is having her “Birthday/Halloween/Breast Cancer in Remission” party tomorrow night and my Coach Beard costume is on POINT.
Day 2: Saturday. Fuck me. I wake up SWEATING, burning up. My temperature is now 100.0 (Allie Brosh gif “no, I wanted the opposite of this”) and I decide “fuck it, I’m taking another Covid test.” Well screw me sideways, for the first time since March 2020 when all this shit started it finally got to me. I text Hubs “DON’T COME IN HERE” and he texts back “LET ME GET THE FLAME THROWER” (haha very funny). Instead he brings me coffee, toast, and eggs. Then I ask him three separate texts for 1) apple butter for my toast 2) Crystal hot sauce for my eggs and 3) a glass of orange juice. Hey it’s the least he can do after the flame thrower quip. Fortunately there is an urgent care open until 4 pm down the road, so I go there, follow protocols, they don’t give me another test (apparently the home test positives are pretty accurate, they are more likely to give you false negatives). Interestingly they do not recommend paxlovid at this clinic, especially with my high blood pressure. They give me a shot to start my antibiotic/steroid boost, I run pick up a bunch of meds and some McDonalds, and hunker down in my isolation chamber and proceed to watch my Ole Miss Rebels end their seven-game winning streak. Joy. Hubby brings me soup and a roll and some gatorade.
So that makes today (Sunday) Day 3. According to CDC guidelines, I should isolate 5 days from the start of my symptoms, then so long as I’m feeling better after Day 5 and my temp has been normal for 24 hours, I can go back to work wearing a mask for at least five more days (though I will probably wear a mask for the rest of my life. I’ve realized I don’t like my lower face; my teeth are crooked, my lips are oddly scarred from years of cold sores, I’ve developed a complete lack of a chin which now blends into my neck...yeah I’ll wear a mask forever. Which would be easier if I didn’t also have to wear glasses)

alright nerds, i’m finally here to make that life update post because i’m finally in a good enough headspace to talk about it! because, uhhh.... it’s a lot. tw for mentions of abuse ( emotional / financial ), and s*icidal thoughts. 
so,  if you guys remember, i was working at a bakery, and i was presumably going to work there for the rest of my life & finally gain financial stability. uh, spoiler alert: the keyword there is was, because instead of letting me drop back down from THIRTY HOURS A WEEK to my usual twenty or giving me a week or two off after i started to burn out and my mental health went in the shitter? my ex-boss skipped straight to firing me. ( she didn’t even do it in person, she sent my manager and her husband to my house with all my stuff. we all cried. it was a mess. ) it was so bad that they didn’t want to leave until my best friend picked me up because they thought i’d kill myself if they left me alone. like, i don’t know how FIRING me was supposed to help my mental state if they thought i was in that dire of a situation, but y’know. and.. they were right to worry. i had a few Scares in the thought department, and had to stay with friends ( and ugh, family ) for a bit.
to top it all off, i had to fight social security to get my full check back for two months and it absolutely destroyed what little savings i had. i still have to ight them for backpay over a whole shitstorm in april where they claimed i was still employed. ( i wasn’t. i had to tell 5 seperate people over two months before they gave me my check back. ) 
 my mom’s back to financially controlling / abusing me on top of the emotional, verbal, and mental shit i was already dealing with. she refuses to pay me the twenty bucks she owes me for cleaning her house & expects me to work again on tuesday. i nearly lost my home because of the rent fiasco, and i only just got my food stamps back. my savings are completely fried, my mother’s hellbent on bankrupting me, and my wallet got stolen last week! also, i still haven’t received my refund from the state. 
so... yeah, that’s why i haven’t been here. i’m okay now. my mental health’s still dicey, but i’m working through it .i’ll probably make an official post later ( i REALLY don’t want to, but desperate times ykyk ) but if you have any money to spare, i don’t even have money to replace my usb hub, let alone my piece of shit desk. you can toss a coin to your shelly at my paypal, but PLEAAASE ignore my deadname.
