#HOWEVER book tropes and fanfic tropes are not the same thing

Text
I've been thinking about this because of the shitty ads for contemporary YA romance going around and the way books are marketed using an extreme amount of fanfiction tropes and almost nothing else. Like yes tropes ARE a part of literature and can be used to help catalogue books and movies in archives and such but they aren't supposed to be supplements for summaries and plot.
Like if you tell me something is contemporary YA which follows a businesswoman struggling at her job and trying to figure out why she's unhappy slowly getting closer to the local cafe barista when she stops in over the course of the novel and she goes on a journey of self discovery and etc etc that would at least tell me what the book is about. I probably wouldn't read it or like it if I read it because I don't like contemporary YA romance but I at least know what it's about and would be able to recommend it to someone if they were looking for something similar.
But if you took that same book and ONLY told me it was contemporary YA romance, slowburn, and coffee shop, that doesn't really tell me anything about the characters or why I should care. These are original characters I can't just look at ao3 tags and be like "oh yeah I like these characters already I want to see them in this specific scenario" these are original characters and you have to give me a reason to care. When I'm looking for a book to read I'm looking for a book, not a fanfiction for something I already like. If I wanted to read fanfiction I would read it. Publishing fanfiction doesn't not make it fanfiction and describing books exclusively in fanfiction tropes and nothing else does not a good book advertisement make. They are not a replacement for an actual summary, they are a tool that can help quickly identify books in a catalogue or archive if someone is looking for something to read.
This isn't to dunk on fanfiction! I write and read fanfic but it's more akin to the junk food of the literature world. It's good and yummy and can fill in a specific niche in internet communities, but it shouldn't make up your entire literature consumption, yknow?
Also for fucks sake, stop describing classical literature with fanfiction tropes you are doing a severe disservice to them and completely missing the point of literally all those books. If I have to see one more person describe Pride and Prejudice as "enemies to lovers" I will scream.

genre i love: queer sports
examples:
Haikyuu!!
Creator: Haruichi Furudate
Sport: Volleyball
Medium: Manga + Anime
Queer coded to hell and back with no explicit canon. A popular anime that's very engaging. Whenever I watch it I feel like I should get my life together. It's super good, but fanbase can be a lil weird.
Fence
Author: C. S. Pacat
Sport: Fencing
Medium: 5 collated graphic novels + 2 novels
This one changed my life. I discovered it and haven’t been the same since. It’s cute, the two main characters are oblivious wee things, but there is canon representation in the older characters. Almost (if not all) of these characters are Queer As Hell. It’s brilliant. If you like Golden-Retriever-Sunshine-Boy-with-Troubled-Past x Grumpy-Black-Cat-with-Emotionally-Distant-Parents trope, then you’ll love this!
Check, Please!
Author: Ngozi Ukazu
Sport: Ice Hockey
Medium: 2 graphic novels
I saw this in my local public library once, picked it up, and never (emotionally) put it down. These books started my craving for 2D queer sports. This is what put me onto “Fence” in the first place. It’s canon, it’s sweet, the main character is a cutie, what more could you want?
Free!
Creator: Kyoto Animation
Sport: Swimming
Medium: Anime
I’ll be real, I didn’t finish all the seasons of this,,, the first two seasons slay the house down. But I dunno, guess it just didn’t keep my focus. I also don’t think anything gets canonized later,,, so it’s still just hashtag queer coded :( which is not slay.
AFTG
Author: Nora Sacavic
Sport: Exy (??!)
Medium: 3 novels
Now, you might think, “Exy isn’t a real sport” and you would be correct. Nora invented it for the novel. It’s like if the basics of lacrosse met the violence of ice hockey and it was played on a football (soccer) sized field with a balance of genders on the teams. This nonsense altered my brain chemistry, for better or worse, we will never know. However. If you seem intrigued, and want to read, PLEASE google the trigger warnings. Anything you think could possibly be triggering is definitely in this book. If you don’t want to google for fear of spoils, feel free to message me. These books are simultaneously the best and worst things I've ever had the (dis)pleasure of reading. I love them. They’re terribly written. They’re a mastery of metaphors set on a background of college sports with a mafia subplot. It’s like if a crazy fanfic got published. ALSO short king representation. Main man is 5’3, second main man is 5’0. I love this to pieces and I hate it to nothings.
Yuri on ice
Creator: MAAPA
Sport: Ice-skating
Medium: Anime
You know this one. If you don't, it’s not technically canon, but they buy each other (engagement) rings and kiss (sort of) on screen. Slays. Victor Nikiforov has my heart.
SK8 the infinity
Creaotr: Bones
Sport: Skateboarding
Medium: Anime
This one makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside i love it so much. There's angst and love and found family and tragic backstories and funny characters. Not canon though. Hashtag Japan Definitely Doesn’t Have a Homophobia Problem and That’s Definitely Not Why All of The Anime’s on This List Aren’t Canon. Anyways, it’s really cute and I watched t when i was in my own skateboarding era so i loved it so much.
If i remember more, or watch, or read more, I will add them :)

It’s kinda crazy reading gwynriel theories because, and I’m trying to be as objective as possible here, I do think elriels try to get a good understanding of gwynriels’ arguments and try to look at the text as objectively as possible. And that’s part of why we like elriel, because we see the story is going in that direction. Whereas I find that when I’m reading a gwynriel’s analysis, they make SO many assumptions that are just WRONG and easily disproven in the text. They just make these sweeping claims like “Azriel and Elain don’t actually care about each other” ?? Usually what they are saying seems to be parroted from someone else or from fanfics and don’t use the canon text to back it up. For them it seems to come down to personal preference whereas for us it goes beyond preference and we base it on canon.
And they get mad when we say Azriel doesn’t care about Gwyn even though we have “he wouldn’t go as far as to call her a friend” and how he acted when they were in the Blood Rite. Yet they’ll turn around and say Elriel don’t actually care about each other despite all of the caring behavior they’ve shown each other.
Just a rant but I guess I’m just saying I love that Elriels have canon backing us up. In my opinion tik tok has led to a rise of readers who are not able to consume literature that doesn’t involve a man with shadows who is considered “morally gray” but actually has a heart of gold and never does anything wrong, and a feisty sword wielding female character. They need everything to be a trope and need it all spelled out for them. They cannot think critically about what they are reading. I know we all joke that SJM books are not very complicated, and that’s true, but I do think she is able to write in a way that doesn’t fall into the tik tok style…probably because she’s been in the game for a decade. Anyway. Rant over haha.
I agree that there are a lot of 'feelings'. Well, I don't feel like Elain is good for Azriel. Or Azriel/Lucien 'deserve' better. Or I feel like Azriel wants a mate and not Elain.
Lots and lots of 'feelings'. And 'interpretations'.
Well, that's not how I interpret it.
Some things don't need to be interpreted at all. They just are. Words on a page which don't need anyone agonising over them. There are facts, which don't care about feelings. And facts that don't need interpretation.
You could, for example, opine on something like 'What if the Cauldron was wrong?" You could interpret it in a variety of different ways. That's totally fine.
However, some things are just there because SJM put them there for a reason. A guy who is dreaming about giving a woman oral is not open for interpretation. It also isn't really a debate to assume that an author is not going to have this same guy just dream of how a woman is going to sound when he enters her, get mated!! to another woman in the same chapter.
This is SJM, not some twisted dark romance, though even in the very darkest and twistiest of romances, it's one chick per dude. Dude becomes obsessed with one chick. Not multiples. SJM is especially not gonna write about a dude choosing a woman from a bunch of contenders. Not how this game is played.
And I wish sometimes, this basic logic was applied to Gwynriel. Step away from fanfics and cosplays and whatever else, and think about the genre and what SJM is trying to write here. Even if you don't like Elain. Even if you hate her. SJM doesn't share your feelings.

Sometimes you loved your job. Sometimes you hated it.
On a night like this, however, you absolutely loved it.
Kendall was a forty-something year old man—he hadn’t disclosed the exact age for work related reasons—and he always picked the best restaurants. Italian cuisine, Chinese, Mexican. It was like he scoured all of New York for you specifically, and made note of the best ones.
When he had first sent you a message, you were weirded out by the lack of information on his page. You had sent his profile to be vetted through the website’s system, only to be told that he had special permission to leave his profile half blank. Apparently, Mr. Kendall No Last Name was a CIA agent who asked for the utmost discretion.
So with pepper spray and a letter opener in your purse, you risked it.
And boy, was that a good choice.
He never wanted to sleep with you. He just wanted company. Someone to talk to about his pending divorce and about stress from work. A hot meal was provided, a hotel room was usually booked, and reruns of old 90s movies played in the background as Kendall continued ranting, drinking his champagne and falling asleep before you.
He was attractive. Green eyes and curly brown hair. A muscular body that wasn’t too extreme. Lips that you had found yourself staring at for too long some moments. But they were so perfectly etched on his face, how could you not?
You’d be a liar if you said you weren’t excited for his dates. He was a repeat client, scheduled for Friday nights and sometimes Saturday mornings. He had been choosing your services for over a year, and Christmas time brought his highest booking rates.
One-thousand dollars a night. No sex, he wouldn’t let you pay for food, and he always ended the date with, “So, same time next week?”
Your phone pinged with the notification that he had indeed booked you for the same time next week.
Kendall wasn’t your only client, though. And just because he wasn’t asking you for sex didn’t mean the others weren’t.
Justin was usually an all-in kind of guy. You usually had to fake your orgasms with him. But he was attractive and held good conversation, so you put up with it.
Marvin just wanted blowjobs. Literally, that was all he ever asked for. Then he filled up the rest of his time with talk of Star Wars.
Leslie was your only female client. After doing your nails and gossiping about work, she went down on you. Like, for an hour straight. Then she pulled out the strap-on, laid on her stomach, and asked you to fuck her hard and fast.
She was probably the client you looked forward to the most after Kendall.
You unlocked your apartment door and triple-checked the lock after closing it. You had left your pajamas laid out and your skincare routine all lined up. You internally high-fived yourself for that.
Once you snuggled up in bed, you scrolled through your social media. You were private on most things, and your public sites had no personal photos. It was a hazard for work, so you compromised.
As your eyes became heavier, you clicked off your phone and turned it upside down on your nightstand. You had a free day tomorrow. No clients, just grocery shopping.
Your phone pinged. Had Kendall forgotten something? Did you remember to take your cardigan from the passenger seat of his car?
You groaned and unlocked your phone, squinting as the light nearly blinded you. It was a notification from the escort app—a private message. You debated opening it in the morning, but a free day was a free day for a reason. No work, no distractions, nothing.
You choked on your spit as you finished reading the first line. Flopping over in bed, you reached over to turn on your lamp.
“Good evening, Escort Renaissance.”
You rolled your eyes. It was a stage name you had picked as a joke, thinking you could change it later. But your profile was completed and made permanent once you created the account. You would have to contact customer service to change it or create a whole different profile. It was more work than you wanted to do.
“As you can tell by the encryption, this message is private. Not even the technology support of this app can view it. My name is Maria Hill, co-director of Stark Industries and field agent, tasked with contacting you through Tony Stark himself.”
This had to be a joke. It was a joke. No way this was serious.
“We were wondering if you would be interested in attending the annual Avengers Christmas Ball this month. Our only request is that you attend on the arm of Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes. If his history is a dealbreaker for you, please delete this email and sign the NDA that will appear in your personal email inbox afterward.
If you accept, would you be able to visit the Avengers Compound tomorrow morning, December 2nd, and possibly meet with the Sergeant? Specifics of this agreement will be, and can only be, discussed in person.
Thank you,
Agent Maria Hill, Co-Director
Stark Industries”
You blinked at the message multiple times, rereading it just in case something popped up mid-read and announced it was a scam. Because this had to be.
There was no way the Winter Soldier was in the market for a hooker.
~
You were a stupid person. You were going to be proven right, that this was all a scam, and be absolutely humiliated at the front door. Or rather, front gate.
Oh my god, there were people with guns at the front gate.
What the fuck do you say? Hi! I’m the escort one of you signed up for!
You drove to the entrance and counted your breaths, trying to make the next inhale longer than the last. The man at the kiosk motioned at you to stop your car. Then five other people started scanning it and checking your tires.
“You know what? Forget it. I just remembered I had this appointment with my nail tech at one today, so I can just put this bitch in reverse and fuck off—”
“Are you M.R?”
Are you M.R?
“By M.R, do you mean Miss Renaissance?”
The man’s eyebrows knitted together as he read his clipboard again. “Yeah, the artist Stark wanted to speak with about a new piece for his office.”
You swallowed a whimper. The humiliation was turning to nausea now. “Yup, that’s me. Artist, painter, what the fuck drawer.”
He stared at you for a few seconds before shaking his head, deciding it was better to just let you through than deal with you himself. If anything did go wrong, the Avengers would handle you.
Oh my god, the Avengers would handle you.
Squealing all the way to the parking lot, you prayed to whatever entity would listen that this conversation went well. Did the Avengers often call for sex workers to… accompany them to Balls? Or did they employ them for what the job description literally said?
You were escorted through the entrance and down several hallways. They let you know where the bathrooms were, where the fire alarm was, where the I need an Avenger, stat! alarm was. They were color-coded, too.
You stepped faaaar away from the green one.
They made you sign an NDA regardless. You were sat in a large room that looked lived-in, with a kitchen off to the side and the entrance to the gym on the other. A stray cardigan hung from the recliner and several board games were stacked in the bookcase. Someone’s Netflix home page was on the TV screen, slideshow on.
These were the same people who fought aliens and killed people. Who carried guns and were hunted by the government for a time. Who had seen atrocious things and lived through immense trauma—
“Miss Renaissance!”
You startled, phone toppling from your already shaking fingers and onto the blue rug. You scoped the floor like Velma looking for her glasses, apologizing under your breath. Whoever stepped in front of you had very nice dress shoes.
“That’s me, I’m her. Hi.”
They held out a hand. You dared to look up, whimper fully released now as you realized whose hand was reaching down to help you. Never in your life did you think Tony Stark would help you stand. Let alone contact you. No doubt he’s utilized the services of escorts and the like, but did you ever think you’d be one of them? Nope.
“Glad to see you’re on time! And dressed incredibly saucy if I may add.”
You blushed, looking down at your attire. You had worn a knitted sweater and a pair of leggings, with sneakers and some fuzzy socks. It was almost winter, after all. Stark’s sarcasm is a relief really. It didn’t sound condescending.
“Well, they say dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”
“And what job do you want?”
“Why, hooker of course!”
Stark sputters a laugh, smiling wide. “Yay, I like you already. Follow me?”
The breath is knocked from your lungs in one big rush. All the worry you were feeling beforehand had seemed to diminish, now turning into something more neutral. If they didn’t want you around, then you’ll have left without making such a horrendous first impression.
“You sign the NDA?”
“Got the ink on my fingers to prove it.”
“You like the compound?”
“I prefer my little shoebox.”
“You like big, strong, burly men with long hair?”
“If they can fuck like Gods, I’m all for them.”
Another choked laugh. “Good to know.”
He led you into a more private area, and it wasn’t until Pietro Maximoff appeared from a side door that you realized where you were heading.
A bedroom.
Oh my god, Stark was leading you to a bedroom. Oh my god, was work starting already?
“Um, I was told this was simply a meeting and that I didn’t have to perform—”
“Oh, Hell. I’m sorry. I’m leading you to the Sergeant’s room because it’s soundproof. You are not fucking him.”
You blew a raspberry, shoulders falling limp. “Oh, yay, good. I didn’t shave.”
“You know what? Forget about Barnes. Be mine instead.”
It was your turn to laugh. Stark knocked on the door three times, rocking on his heels as he waited.
What would the Winter Soldier be like? Was he tough and rugged? Was he quiet and mysterious? Was he gentle and kind? Did he fuck like a God?
The door opened to reveal none of the above.
There weren’t words to describe him. None would suffice.
You were utterly, truly, awestruck. He had blue eyes that looked so damn sad but gleamed a beautiful silver. A nose with the perfect arch that was just a little scarlet on the tip. Lips so pink and precious and hydrated, your leg muscles clenched. Long hair up in a messy bun, conditioned and shiny. And his body…
You were ogling. You were being offensive. You tried focusing on the objects behind him but that only got you looking at his shoulder.
Metal. Metal and strong and shit.
You wanted that metal hand wrapped around your neck.
“Hi,” you squeaked, clearing your throat immediately afterward. “I’m—”
“Renaissance?”
“Ugh, that’s a stage name. I would have chosen Lightening Pussy if they allowed name changes, but Renaissance is all I’ve got to work with.”
The Sergeant blinked, blue eyes looking from you to Stark. “Come in please.”
Scratch everything you said before about this being a bedroom. This was a whole private apartment. His own marble kitchen, living area, a single bathroom, and an extra private bedroom down the hall. It was amazing, but it wasn’t overly personal.
Everything looked like a model home. Impersonal but practical.
“So what do you want to know?”
The Sergeant opened his mouth to speak but Stark beat him to it. “Are you available for the entire month?”
You scoffed, “Are you serious?”
“Dead. Barnes here has been talking about swiping his V-Card since he moved in but he’s got a lot to learn. I would pay you for the entire month, even past the day of the Ball so you don’t lose out on any income that could have come from other dates.”
“I’m—” Barnes cringed, whispering lightly. “I’m not a virgin.”
Stark cleared his throat, his face suddenly going serious. He looked at Barnes like he was trying to apologize, to speak with his eyes. A conversation that needed to be had without you in the room.
So you changed the subject. “I would have to let my other clients know as soon as possible. What dollar range are we talking?”
“Let’s say…” Stark pretended to add in his mind. “One hundred thousand?”
“W-what?”
“Is that too little?” Stark asked, pulling out his phone. “I’m sure Pepper said that amount.”
“One… One hundred thousand?”
“Yeah, see, here,” Stark said, turning his phone and showing you the email. “One hundred thousand dollars, paid upfront, cash or check.”
“One hundred THOUSAND?”
“Is she not getting this? I’m getting this. Are you getting this, Barnes?”
Barnes wiped a frustrated hand down his face, groaning, “She gets it, Stark. She’s just not believing it.”
You usually made rent on time. Sometimes you had to dip into your savings, but that’s what it was there for. One hundred thousand dollars could get you a better apartment. It could pay for travel. It could change your life.
You enjoyed your job. You didn’t mind the odd hours or the sex. You had a choice in it all. But would you like to do something else with your life that allowed you a different kind of freedom?
Absolutely.
“What exactly am I being recruited for?”
“Barnes,” Tony said, bowing his head a little. “Shall I leave you to it?”
Barnes nodded, still not meeting your eye. He was reserved, you could tell that by his demeanor alone. But there was something else about him. Something chaotic but pure, bursting at the seams. No word described him yet because you didn’t know him. You didn’t want to assume. So you left him as he currently was: Reserved.
When the door clicked, Barnes shot back quickly to sit on the couch. Several feet away from you.
“Do I smell?”
Barnes’s eyebrows pulled together. “What?”
“I showered last night and put on perfume, so it’s a problem with your nose. Not my pits.”
He shook his head, blinking as if to clear his mind. “Can I speak, please? And call me Bucky.”
Bucky. Even his name was unique.
“Stark is hosting a Christmas Ball on Christmas Eve and I need a date. But I don’t know anyone, so.”
“Ah, so your only solution was to hire a hooker.”
“I thought you were an escort.”
You shrugged, putting your purse down on one of the nearby bar stools. “When they don’t fuck me, I’m an escort.”
Bucky cringed, but quickly tried to hide it. Did this guy have a problem with consensual sex work? Because if he did then this was going to be a problem. You had no problem telling off the Winter Soldier. You didn’t care how red his ledger was.
“I just… I just need a date. I’m not expecting anything from you. But I would greatly appreciate it if you could accompany me.”
So, he did want you. Just in a whole other context. He was probably just too shy to send you the message himself.
“Alright. So is this like a test run? We ask each other questions and you see if you like me or not?”
Again, his face did some awkward contorting motion. “We don’t have to. I know enough.”
He… What?
“Did you guys run a background check on me?”
“Look at where you are.”
“No, no. For sure, I get that. But I’m supposed to be your date. What if people ask where we met, what our favorite foods are, what positions we like to cuddle in?”
“I’m positive no one will care.”
“Bucky Barnes, I am hot. You are hot. We would make a hot couple. People are always curious about hot couples.” You moved to go sit on the opposite couch, speaking simultaneously. “We should at least create a cover story.”
Then he did the weirdest thing.
He stood up the moment your ass hit the cushion, and went to stand near your abandoned purse.
Did he…Was he okay? Was there something else that needed to be addressed? In this business, you’ve seen it all.
People who have overcome trauma and want to explore the things they used to love. People who were battling trauma and wanted to see what they still liked. People who did not touch you, did not want you touching them, and just wanted company. People who fucked like they needed that release, like they were going to die without it.
“Bucky… I can leave now if you’d like me to. I know I come off strong, but I’ve found that usually calms my clients. Especially if they’re first-timers. But if you don’t want me—”
“I want you.”
You paused mid-air, looking at him. He had uncrossed his arms, as if to physically stop you from leaving the room. But you know that idea was exaggerated. It was probably just a reflex.
“Please stay.”
You sat back down, clearing your throat. “Ask me questions. Get comfortable with me. I promise I will do what’s asked of me and respect you and this place. I’m not trying to pressure you, but I could really use that money.”
There. It was said, it was out in the open. No taking it back now. You didn’t want to guilt trip, but you meant what you said. You wouldn’t do anything that wasn’t asked of you and you would make him and the team look good.
Hell, for that amount of money, you would fuck all the Avengers.
But… No. No fucking was going to occur. Just sweet talking, names exchanged, and whatever else this hunk of a man asked of you.
“I…” Bucky looked to the floor, throwing around your words in his mind. His facial expressions were difficult to read. He looked angry, but it could also be frustration. He looked sad, but it could also be boredom.
“Come back tomorrow,” he continued, finally looking up at you. The blue of his eyes glistened, locking you in place. “Come back tomorrow and we can… We can talk about our favorite colors.”
“I said they’d ask what our favorite foods and cuddling positions were.”
Then his chest rumbled, and the most beautiful quiet laugh spilled from his soft-looking lips. His eyes even adopted some of those lovely crinkles. Aging or laughter or otherwise.
You made him laugh.
Gods almighty, let the whole country know that you made him laugh.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Bucky Barnes.”
“See you tomorrow…?”
You repeat your name for him, enunciating the pronunciation and everything. He repeats it back to you, and you melt a little inside. Like marshmallows in rich, hot chocolate.
~
It was Hell emailing your clients to tell them you would be unavailable for the rest of the month. Usually, December is your most busy month. But you would now be making more than you do in six months combined.
That is, if Bucky Barnes liked you tomorrow.
He was, perhaps, the most beautiful man you had ever seen. And the fact that he didn’t physically want you? Fuck your life.
But you were a professional and not everything was about sex. Companionship was a big deal during the holidays, and you were going to deliver.
You finished heating your tea just as Home Alone started on TV. You snuggled deep into your blanket, wincing when your fuzzy socks lightly shocked you. You warmed up your hands, glanced at the falling snow outside your window, and sighed as the opening credits began to roll.
It was your job to provide companionship.
It just always felt one-sided.
Because you were, sadly, so incredibly lonely.

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc. I haven't touched on this yet in ASAW, but photographs. I absolutely love rambling about photographs and stuff. Also mirrors, I feel like there's a lot of scenes where Bucky assess himself in mirrors or looks at his own body and ruminates on things.
🌞 Do you have a preferred time of day to write? Lately been enjoying writing in the evening and being able to write however much I want until the sun rises and I have to get back to my life. I enjoy having nowhere to be and just being able to sit and type and type and type.
💖 What made you start writing? I've always been into writing and stories ever since a kid. My mom was a teacher and specialized in English/reading recovery so books have always been a HUGE part of my life. As a kid, we didn't go to beaches or amusement parks for vacations, we went to book signings and meet/greet the authors things. Because of that, I've always been a huge reader and thus it was easy for me to get into writing as well. Joining fandoms just opened me up to sharing my writing. Though I had a long writer's block because of how obsessive my writing became and I needed to step away from it. I lost a lot of motivation and creativity but I'm back now! And I think I'm doing much better.
❌ What's a trope you will never write? Can't write any mystery or action. I just don't have the brain power to plot things like that, my brain is a very simple creature and just wants to watch the same two men fall in love again and again. And torture the one of them repeated lol.
🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started? oh boy, I don't even know. I feel like I'm not even qualified to give advice, I still feel like a very new fanfic writer 😭 I've only been seriously writing for like 2 months I think. But I guess I'd say, just keep going? Keep doing what you're doing. it doesn't matter if you're not amazing at writing or don't have a great vocabulary or don't understand grammar or punctuation, etc. You don't need any of that to write something that resonates with other people. Write what you feel and maybe you'll make someone else feel that too.
🤲 Would you please share a snippet of a wip? Ahhh, I literally have 0 words in As Stable As Water since posting Chapter 5 so here's something from Chapter 10 of You Watched Me Burn.
“I lost control, Bucky. It’s my fault. But please, give me another chance,” he pleaded, his voice breaking. Bucky had never seen Brock this emotional. The older man’s eyes were watering and his voice sounded strangled as if his chest was being crushed by some invisible weight at just the thought of losing Bucky.  “Brock I… I can’t do this right now,'' Bucky finally settled on. Everything hurt too much and he couldn’t make any decisions with the amount of pain he was in. Not to mention the way all of his thoughts were muddled up. “I… give me some time. I need to sleep.” Instead of yelling at him, Brock immediately nodded. “Of course baby, do you want any more blankets? I can grab you some more,” he offered right away.

I’m a bit late to the party, but thank you SO much for answering me super fast! I so appreciate your ultra-in-depth response about Mirion and Arvellas’s fates. Although I still weep on weekends, it’s helped me so much with my own story! And all the supplemental headcanon info on Mirkwood as a society has been invaluable to me as well! (Also thank you so much for your update on my Lindir fic! Please don’t worry about the length of time! When I submitted the request I shot for maybe having it as a Christmas present or New Year’s treat! But any time I receive it l’ll savor it all the same!)
I wanted to ask though, are there any writing exercises or prompts that you do to train your writing muscles? I find that I have a tougher time placing dialogue intentionally where it needs to be, and I struggle with showing, not telling. I plan my stories and chapters, which helps me a TON, but I still have issues. I’m coming back to writing after abandoning it in about 2018 because of uni and life. But now I wanna come back, which is why I’m writing my story, but I feel so rusty. Any tips/suggestions on how/what to write to improve on these skills?
Thank you so much for all your help. I really appreciate you. Your account’s richer than the mines of Moria for great writing content!
- Mithril
Hello Mirthril my friend!
Boy, am I glad I was able to answer your Ask quickly last time, because this one is laaaaate. I hope you'll forgive me that, but I have been pondering over your question since I received it.
My impostor syndrome tends to rear its ugly head whenever someone asks me for writing advice. I am against false modesty and all for giving oneself due credit, so I will say that I am a pretty damn good writer. (And I certainly hope so; I suck at math and most left-brain skills, so this is all I've got, haha!) However, I wouldn't call myself top-tier in the fanfic writer's world. Even though I have been doing this for many years, I still struggle with any aspects of my writing--in the same ways you described!
But you asked so kindly and I want to be able to offer you something, so here are the few tips I could think of that personally work for me, in addressing the challenges you described:
SotWK's Writing Strategies and Tips
Writing exercises or prompts
I actually suffer from having too many ideas, so I don't seek or invite new prompts often. I lean on the endless stream of wackadoo ideas in my brain, or the lovely suggestions and requests that come into my (always open) Ask Box.
I exercise things that I'm weakest at, and right now that's my speed and focus. I currently write at an abysmal 6-7 wpm (about 200 words every 30 minutes). Embarrassingly slow! I very recently discovered sprinting on Discord servers, and so far it's been effective in training me to focus on just getting words down as quickly as I can. I highly recommend it! I think with time it will gradually bump up my wpm.
If you really would like prompts to get you going, there are plenty of prompt games floating around the Tolkien fandom. You can also source them from writing groups, such as @fellowshipofthefics, the one I currently belong to. Their January Trope Roulette, for example, is so much fun! Amazing support group for Tolkien writers, and more importantly--very chill, no pressure.
Dialogue
This is tricky for everyone, and definitely exposes a writer's style and ability to speak in the voice of different characters (I think that's why writers stress about it). You gotta do it with accuracy and range, so it IS a challenge!
If you want to get as close to the characters' voices as Tolkien wrote them, then the obvious strategy seems to be to immerse yourself in the source material. Read the books. Watch the movies (which are pretty faithful, tone/dialogue wise).
When writing Tolkien fanfic, I am constantly browsing through my books (having ebook copies helps), playing the trilogies in the background, or listening to the audiobooks (I have the Andy Serkis versions). It's a little bit like method acting. If you drown yourself in the character's voices enough, you'll actually start talking like them in your head. You'll pick up on the language, the word choices, the pace of the dialogue within the story.
This is the reason I personally don't hop around fandoms (Tolkien only), and I stay away from modern AUs or crack fics. I prefer to preserve that Middle-earth tone and voice and keep it consistent in my writings.
You can also draw inspiration from other period/medieval/fantasy works! My frequent go-to's are ASOIAF/Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon, Pride and Prejudice, and even Downtown Abbey works!
This last one might be extra weird, but I am a writer who leans heavily on fancasts/actors for inspiration. I like seeing a clear face and hearing a distinct voice for the character I am writing. It truly helps me write dialogue. For this reason, I fancast every major character that appears in my fics, and I usually pick big-name actors. Why? Because they have more movies/tv shows I can watch and listen to!
Fun fact: While writing my Éomer fic (which was VERY dialogue heavy), I listened to the first 7 minutes of Dredd SO MANY TIMES over and over just to imbibe Karl Urban's voice--I'm surprised the Netflix app didn't crash.
Tumblr media
Showing, not telling
Here's one thing to try: Use "said" or "said + adverb" more often than you think you should, instead of trying to force a substitute. Or don't use a speech verb at all. This will force you to get a bit more descriptive about the characters' specific condition or actions. (Example from my fic: “Anywhere. Far enough to take you away from all this--” Éomer swung out his free arm in a gesture as wild as the fervor in his eyes. “Away from everything that is confusing you.”)
Visualizing a clear picture in my head helps me with the showing, and writing descriptions. Besides daydreaming and staring off into space, watch cinematic masterpieces, and train yourself to use words to describe what you are seeing.
But personally, I think purple prose and lack of brevity is the bigger issue in many fanfics (including my own). We need to remember there's nothing wrong with being straightforward in our storytelling and descriptions, because it speeds up the story pace or at least gives it more variety.
Shaking off Rust
Nothing else to do but just do it, my friend! :)
Whenever I feel rusty or blah about my current projects, I just shuffle over to a different WIP, or if it's really bad--start a new one!
As long as you're getting words down and you're happy and satisfied, you're doing it right.
Lean on writing friends for help and inspiration. We are a community here, regardless of the whisperings that "fandom is dying". It will stay alive and thriving if we keep it so!
Anyway, that's my non-professional, semi-bogus advice regarding things that work for me! Hopefully you can find something in there that works for you too.
Thank you as always for your kind words, and I wish you the best of luck--and LOTS OF FUN--in your writing!

Hey!
I saw your recent art post about Davy and Abby, so first of all: they're very cute💕 Davy needs to be loved and I get exited whenever I see someone expressing love for him or shipping their oc or self-insert with him, there isn't a whole lot of them out there for our poor cursed man😭
Secondly, would you maybe like to share some more about your oc, like for example her backstory or how she and Davy met? I find it so interesting to learn about other people's ocs especially when they're from fandoms that I'm in as well^^
I hope you have a nice day! Also no pressure with answering the questions rightaway of course :)
Hi! <3 Sorry for the late reply. ^^" First of all - Tysm! 💕 And I agree 100%. He needs more recognition and love, there is not much content of him so I am more than happy to be able to create it myself and share it with people who like him as much as I do.
And secondly - AAAAAAAAA! it makes me so so so happy that you are interested to hear about her. 🥰 She is my rp/original character I use in the rp I am writing with my bestie (it's still in the making). My friend is a writer and she is currently rewriting it in a form of a book/ fanfiction that we will, hopefully, post online once it's done (wattpad and maybe other platforms). For now it will be only in Polish though, but maybe one day we will try and translate it. My artworks however, have English dialouges to try and hopefully reach a wider audience. :) The title is "Krew, seks i piraci" ("KSiP" in short) which stands for "Blood, sex and pirates" in English. The whole thing is 18+ because of violence and erotic scenes. (the title clearly indicates it.)
The book is completely fanon. We just took what the canon gave us and created our own headcanons for the PoTC characters and lore for our original characters.
As for the plot... The story begins with two sisters living in Cornwall who come into possession of two Aztec gold coins. When the crew of the Black Pearl attacks the city, Abigail and Layla Morgan find themselves aboard Barbossa's ship, where they are forced to survive. They endure the hardships of life on the ship, while still planning and trying to escape. During one storm, Abby falls overboard and ends up aboard the Flying Dutchman as a part of his crew. She goes through a mutation after which she has shark-like teeth and gills, but her body doesn't transform completely because of the effect she has on the cursed Captain Davy Jones. She also befriends Maccus and Crash (they are her besties, her bigger brothers she can always rely on). Here the adventure divides, a clear transformation of both sisters is presented. At the same time, feelings develop both between Barbossa and Lee (Layla's nickname) and between Jones and Abby. Each sister has her own adventures, trials and tribulations. While Lee discovers her past and destiny, Abby experiences perturbations in her relationship with Jones, when the obsessed with her James Wincott (a narcissist who wants to continue Blackbeard's glory) appears. In addition, several more characters are introduced who influence the development of the plot - primarily Jack Sparrow, but also our original characters, such as Lobart (a Frenchman, Abby's 'adoptive' father, an emotional trickster with a clouded past) and Johnny the Buccaneer (an elderly hustler who hates the French). There are also other characters involved in the story. Both plot paths intertwine, striving for a common culmination and ending.
When it comes to fanfic tropes we decided to go with enemies to lovers for Lee/Barbossa and with slowburn for Abby/Jones. There are others such as agegap, height/size difference + a few other sexual themed tropes but I don't want to spoil everything.
When it comes to Abby I can say she is a great thief with a short temper and she is quite a rebellious little creature, which makes her relationship with Davy only more interesting. Thank you so much for the ask again! I hope my answer is good enough, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.🥰

Hey Jalebi! How are u? How's life going?
I just started my articleship & let's just say office tracks are only fun on screen & paper. Okay, if they would just give me some work, just something to do, instead of making us sit do nothing it would be better but whatever it'll get better (fingers crossed). So, my ask is do u read? I've been on a readers' block & pretty much anything which isn't ipk or khushi-arnav-esque doesn't interest me. I'm looking for good books, if u have any recs for a good grumpy×sunshine/enemies-to-lovers/office romance (lol, definitely not the one I shud read rn) or anything that gives the same feelz
Your favourite dupatta 🍁
Hello Hi,
OMG CONGRATS.
Tumblr media
Hope your articleship has gotten better now! Ah, my dear, I haven't read a book in AGES and tbh, I've rarely read romance outside fanfics. (I still am a bookworm, just gotta develop it again).
I feel I'll have an easier time telling you all the love stories I've read and maybe you can see if any pique your interest?
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Love Story by Eric Segal
A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I Can't Think Straight by Shamim Sarif
Most of the other romances I read were a string of free Mills & Boons books that I could catch during 2016-2020 (don't even remember their names!). Some Wattpad stuff (DO NOT RECOMMEND)
However, during my wattpad days I did find a series that you might just enjoy
Storm & Silence series by Rob Thier (there are a few problematic things but overall enjoyable with the feisty heroine stuck up hero trope and I have NOT read it again so, after years, I don't know whether it aged well or not!)\
I've read quite a few solid stuff that I just don't remember - AND I WISH I DID!
But this is pretty much it - if anyone can recommend books please drop links or recs below!
Best,
Jalebi (life is going good)

Hi, Can I ask for some advice? Ok. I am a fanfic writer, but I want to start writing original fiction however I have three problems when it comes to that
1. I really like the tropes the author plays and I have ideas they could play differently But I always am afraid Of being accused of copyright because the overall idea the author has I love. But I would tweak a few things or many things but not the overall concept like for example this series the folk of the air I love the idea of a power struggle between fae and a mortal girl raised in the faerie world and Eventually becoming their queen and being enemies to lovers with a happy ending to their king. I’m afraid of being copyrighted with that
2. I really can’t see the characters with anything but similar names There could be changes like Jude Duarte could be Judith Durante a Filipina variant and she’s Filipina but I always like the name similarities. I do however would change a few family dynamics
3. It’s the characters personality I may change a few things But I always write it to how I see them
4. Basically I have ideas of scenarios and interpretation of AUs or canon divergence that could have been different in the novels but I feel if No one else writes it in the fanfic world the idea will disappear forever.
5. I’m afraid of not getting anyone to read it
Do you have any suggestions to over come them
How to start writing ORIGINAL FICTION
Hey hey!
I used to be a fanfic writer and found it challenging to write original work at first.
I'll try my best to explain how I started writing original fiction and give you some tips.
When you start switching from fanfiction writing, it is common to still base your work a lot on other books you've read and love - that's normal. But, keep in mind that you shouldn't copy other authors' ideas! You can, however, take some inspiration from them. For example, you mentioned you liked the idea of a power struggle and you can, for sure, use that in your piece of work! Since it is just a concept and not a whole plot, there's no problem at all.
Well, about the names: yeah, I felt that too when I stopped writing fanfiction! I wouldn't recommend picking similar names, not because of the original work, but because of your new novel. You want to write something just yours, that doesn't remember the reader of something else. If you can't think of any good name, try a name generator - write down some of your favorites and then search the meaning behind them and see if they suit the character's personality.
The same goes for personality. Since you're so familiar with these characters, you might find it hard to see them with other traits and acting in different ways. Again, I would recommend looking at some cheat sheets for that with a list of traits. Go through that and start picking some flaws and characteristics that could fit the character you're trying to build. Also, this post might be useful: Masterpost to Build a Character.
I will be honest: depending on where you're sharing your work, the number of readers could drastically decrease. I used to share my fanfics on Wattpad and it'd make some numbers. However, when I decided I wanted to start writing original fiction, I found it hard to get people to read - those who'd read my fanfics wouldn't read my original work because all they wanted to read was fanfiction. I don't have any of my original work posted online right now because I have no idea where to post it (and also because I haven't had much time). Try to share your work on Tumblr since the community is very supportive and big. Participate in challenges and interact with other writers.
In summary, my tips are:
Forget the plot of the main work you used to write fanfics about
Take just one or two things you really love and that inspire you
Don't use similar names
Create characters (there are plenty of worksheets for that)
Fall in love with your original characters
Join a community of writers
Write as much as possible
Have fun!!!
I wish you luck and hope you have fun on this journey! Also, I hope this post was useful or inspiring. Once again, these are based on my experience, and it doesn't mean they're 100% right.
Oh, and a few days ago I shared a free notion template that might help you start writing original fiction! Try to check it out if you want to! <3
Well, have a nice day!

Counter-counter-custom ask. Let's do something a little off the beaten path. What sort of reader are you? Are you on the "read omnivorously, time and spoons allowing" bandwagon, or do you find that you gravitate towards specific things? What do you read for, when you're reading for Not Work (however defined)? Can be fanfic or original, fiction or not, or a little bit of everything <3 Optional Bonus: what do you tend to avoid, if anything (genres, tropes, styles, or in your flavor)? Same parameters as above. Optional Bonus, Extra Special Edition: What's the relationship between reading and writing for you?
Ohhh reading questions <3 Thank you, my friend. I always appreciate your custom asks. They are a joy to answer!
I am a read everything kind of person, for sure, within parameters which are parts of the next couple questions lol. I frequently have more spoons for reading than for anything else at the end of my day, and reading is still productive enough for my brain to forgive me my idleness lol. (I do loudly protest hustle culture but I have a soul-deep perhaps even genetic inability to sit still with nothing productive to do, especially now that I am feeling marginally better injury-wise than I have over the last few years.)
I like fantasy genre best of all, but do like a good sci-fi story once in a while. Sometimes creative non-fiction. Occasionally poetry collections. Infrequently contemporary. I tend not to read horror because I'm a chicken lol Well, I'm an editor, which I've mentioned a humble amount of times. Here and there, perhaps infrequently lol so reading is work, too, but it's different. When I read for just the sheer joy of reading, I'm not reading for anything except a good story. Applies to fic, too. I ask "What makes this a good story?" and "What about this is working?" "What can I forgive not working if the story itself is still compelling?" and things like that, so that I can figure that out for myself when I'm writing, which I suppose translates back to the end of this question, so I'll scoot it up here.
I believe making the time to invest in what you're reading is the greatest gift you can give yourself as a writer besides actually sitting down to write and defending your writing time. Ask yourself why story beats and characters are working for you to create an entertaining experience. If a book leaves something to be desired, allow yourself the time to be critical of why. If you seem to frequently be unable to find the story you want to read, again, be critical of how these books are falling short -- and also what elements have the most potential, even if the author didn't follow through in a way you expected. Enjoy the process anyway -- allow yourself to like books that are imperfect. This attitude translates back to your work, too. Things don't have to be perfect, especially out of the gate. Having an understanding of what you'd like to see/improve is different than expecting your first draft to be perfect. Mindset matters here, too. So enjoy books and read widely. That translates back to writing in more ways than I can explain.
I am very forgiving when I'm reading outside of work. (Those I've beta read for or have edited before will know I am gentle in my advice, but still push the author to bring out the best in their work.) I am a lot more willing to overlook glaring structural problems especially in fic if the characters are well written. I am willing to overlook a lack of characterization if the action scenes are unputdownable.
I think the only things I avoid at all costs these days are pwp fic, really and romance as a genre by itself. It's boring to me, doesn't affect me, and really doesn't bring that element of having a good story to the table generally speaking. Sometimes it does? I suppose? But at least with romance novels it's more formulaic, and I'm already bored by the premise of simply romance with nothing else outside of it and doesn't risk much from what I've been able to stomach of the years. (This doesn't mean I don't like drama with a dash of romance or stories that have threads of romance! That's different and not what I mean here.)
And pwp for me is like... well I've said this before in complete jest but it's true. Trying to get me to read it and have an opinion on it for you is like trying to defeat a Ghost Type Pokémon with a Normal type Pokémon or vice versa. It just isn't the right material and I'm not the right audience and the whole point of the thing is lost on me. (:

Same thoughts on your recent post about tlt ghfjfjskl this might be considered way too specific, but it slightly irks me when authors overly describe eyecolors, which isn’t particularly a trope, but I think you get what I mean.. this is especially common with beginner fanfic writers. and for some fantasy young adult authors, they go way into detail giving their characters the most bizarre irises other than common ones irl like brown, blue, or green to raise up the allure I guess 😭.. then it gets adapted, and fans are disappointed that their fave doesn’t have “striking gray orbs” (I guess for YA fantasy adaptations, they don’t bother with contacts.. But for high fantasy, it’s getting kinda popular to use contact lenses ahem Geralt) but when tamsyn does it, i’m like “whooo yes” because the eyecolor switcheroo thing actually plays a huge part in the story
Same!!! In any other book it would be weird, but she had a knack for overly describing eyes that made it seem purposeful even if I didn't yet know why she was doing it. Her descriptions were non-cliche enough for me to think she was going for a "every eye is unique, windows to the soul" type of a thing. However your Geralt comment has me imagining Gideon Nav with distractingly bad golden contact lenses

Been rotating fanfiction as a concept in my head since I reblogged cryptotheism's post the other day. And instead of starting my large perspective drawing due tonight I'll write down some misc. thoughts.
I love fanfiction. And I've been an avid fandom person since middle school. Before I really used Ao3 I was on Fanfic.net learning the citrus scale and woefully unprepared to filter my content. Those were days lmao.
And one thing the sticks in my mind most is that not all fanfiction is a transformative work. But it sure as hell does blur the line.
Y'see a transformative work is a term used when discussing fair use because the tl:dr of it is that it places a work in a new light enough to be considered it's own thing. Think of all the fairytale re-imaginings or reboots that are basically their own thing but with the same characters. (That ladder being harder to produce legitimately because of how our copyright works, but the same concept.)
Fanfiction isn't transformative, not inherently. Most fanfiction is just taking your blorbos and putting them in a scene you want them to be in. It's not creating a fundamentally new story. Most of the time it's just an addition the already existing work, a love (or hate) letter to the art itself.
However, there are times when fanfiction does create its own stories. And here's when the line blurs. Common tropes can be expanded upon enough to develop characters in a new light.
Timeline rewrite aus are where the obvious start is. "What if's" that take the characters on different paths. It's not it's own story technically, it's exploring a path the canon could've taken, but if done right can feel like it's own book.
(Alternate Universes is where the line blurs. Because now you're actively creating a world that is creating this new light where these characters are in. How expansive this new universe's building is dictates how much the line blurs.)
There are companion stories, where knowledge of the main canon enhances the understand but might not be necessary. Oc centered stuff falls here, as does pre-canon fics, and explorations of background stuff where the author saw a character with two lines and decided to build them an entire life.
There are the wildly different aus, where the new world is something incompatible with canon. The obligatory Human!aus fall here when the entire canon being referenced has little to no humans whatsoever. College!aus as well, human or not, because the main canon didn't and could not have room for that sorta coming of age story. Crossovers might be here too, for their ability to merge worlds and make lines that don't exist.
It's funny, because the most transformative fanwork is the one most often criticized within fandom. The au of an au, the reworking a character so theyre unrecognizable from the sources besides maybe a shared name. That is arguably most transformative because of how disconnected it feels from the original.
But truly, I think the main difference between fanfic and transformative work is the intent. When you set out to build a world that retelling of whatever thing in common use with the explicit intent to play with it's characters and themes but to be new, is when you're truly being transformative.
Take all the adaptions of Shakesphere's work. In high school I watched a production of A Midsommer's Night in Jersey. It was so fun. The key difference between adaptations of Shakesphere's work and fanfiction is the intent. It's a retelling, not an addition or a companion or a "what if."
And I think that's what makes it's so blurry. Because when you get deep in your muse and rewrite an existing world or write your own to put the blorbos in, you tread into the territory of that intent even though that's not necessarily where you've started from.
I think we've seen it slightly. It's gone from "Oh X is a ripoff of Y" to "Oh X is just a shameless fanfic of Y" Because if the two versions of X have a different conception being shamed, it's still called out through the act of being a homage/retelling/whatever of Y. And this is where citing your sources and being enthusiastic of your inspirations comes to an important play.

What do you like to read in Tillchard fanfics? An era in time in particular? A genre? A trope? Some kind of set-up/situation? I like when you talk about Tillchard fanfics.
Pain. 🤪😭😳
More specifically, I like to see some variety of hurt/comfort or vital misunderstandings at play. I lean 35-65 in the favour of tragedy over happy endings, too. Bittersweet is my favourite Tillchard flavour.
Favourite eras encompass pre-R+ to Mutter, and then a huge timeskip to post-MIG. They seem much more at ease with each other nowadays than they used to for some time in the past, which is always good to see. Richard opened up best about their friendship in more recent times too, which is useful for contextual reasons - that's more of a writer's POV than a reader's, but it gives me comfort all the same.
I lean more towards 'real' situations rather than AU. Something corroborated by interviews, Flake's books, MVs/making-ofs etc.
I am a sucker for Mutter-era Richard angst. I could read variations on this forever. I guess that's a guilty pleasure 🥴
Food is a necessity. Usually in the form of chef!Richard, however officially or not.
As I said in the previous ask - feigned indifference is my favourite dynamic for the two of them, whether out of necessity or not. Maybe they have never been in a relationship, and have budding feelings, but are in denial. Maybe they have tried being together, many times, but it's never worked out and they need to stop to spare each other from hurt. Maybe a resentment outweighs the love, or one of them did something the other can't get past, and they need pretend all is ok despite the lack of communication. Love isn't really a thing that lies between hate or affection, imo, but of interest - having to fake it, or a lack of it, comes with a very specific kind of pain I can never get enough of reading about. It's not a burning hurt, more the eating kind, like the end stages of tuberculosis. Love to see that in a Tillchard.

Hi!! If I may ask, what are some of your favorite and least favorite literary (and fanfic!) tropes to read and write about?
I am much more of a fanfic writer than a reader, alas. As for writing, I think that anyone who has been following me for a while is familiar with my genres/tropes that often transfer between fandoms, such as enemies to lovers, historical or fantasy AUs (especially steampunk and vampire, ahem), slow burn, mutual pining, The Love Is Requited They're Just Idiots, and other homosexual shenaniganry. (Even when it's a m/f couple, I write both of them as raging bisexuals, so yes.) There are plenty of tropes/fanons that I don't like and wouldn't personally write, but I believe that everyone has the right to enjoy what they enjoy, so I won't go into any detail or call anything out.
As for published books, I am a voracious and eclectic reader. Below is a screenshot of (some of...) my current library holds, which shows approximately what I tend to read, including imaginative historical and/or literary fiction, historical and narrative nonfiction, modern novels, bildungsromans/family sagas/coming of age, sprawling fantasy sagas, etc. I am especially keen on diverse and/or female authors, LGBTQ characters and themes, books informed by their cultural or geographical setting, witty, funny, and well-written prose, and so on:
Tumblr media
In my overall reading, I don't go in for "tropes" the same way as understood in fanfic, since we all hate it when a BookTok (shudder) tries to talk up the Tropes of a newly published book without ever explaining what the plot is or why we would like it. Tropes work in fanfic since we are already familiar with the characters and setting, and just like rewriting them/sticking them into a variety of situations/changing up the dynamics of how they meet and interact, but they are less informative for a story that you don’t know at all.
I am, however, always open to the one-liner description or highlight of particular thematic content that might appeal to me. But I don't necessarily insist on these before I read the book, or base my enjoyment of it solely on whether or not they're present, because indeed, the fun of reading is that you can explore lots of different things solely on the grounds of "this looks interesting to me," and that's how I do it. Very scientifically. Ahem.

Although I'm unsure of my exact word count, I'll just say it's wayyy more than 100,000. I've written a lot in 2022, and I'm sure it's more than 100k words—possibly even 200k or 300k, easily.
I just write so damn much. 🥴
✎*ೃ˚ 5. Longest Completed fic of the year? ✎*ೃ˚
Actually, I haven't finished any lengthy fanfics this year. Sadly. 😭😭
Hell, none of my main fics (Heated & The Unknown) are finished, and that's a bummer. However, I'm committed to completing The Unknown and Heated in 2023.
The only thing I completed in 2022 was the oneshot book - Heartaches and Heartbreaks which was a contribution to the NhPrompts22 event that was hosted by @tessdrawss back in March of 2022.
So for 2023, I'm really getting my butt in gear, haha. I want to finish a lot more stuff.
✎*ೃ˚ 6. Shortest completed fic of the year? ✎*ೃ˚
The shortest fic I finished in 2022 was a Naruhina Halloween special one-shot. The fanfic one-shot was named "Mine," and it was a horror fic that I had wanted to write for a long time.
I had the plot in my head all year in 2022 and really wanted to write it, so I decided to write it as a special during Halloween in 2022.
The one-shot was divided into three long portions, lol. In all honesty, I have no idea how to keep one-shots short. It’s a real struggle.
✎*ೃ˚ 7. Favorite fic to work on? ✎*ೃ˚
My favorite story to work on, eh? I suppose I should say "The Unknown." I've been working on that fanfiction for so long and it’s truly taken me on a wild writing journey. I have to be honest and say that I really love the horror, gore, and dark romance the fanfic possesses.
I really adore how I portrayed demon Naruto in the fic too. Idk, something is wrong with me, I know, lol. He's so freaking scary but hot at the same time. Idk, how I accomplished that.
I am definitely looking forward to writing the conclusion for what I have in mind. I am really awaiting the time I will be able to have time to sit down and really write this fic because I have so much planned for it, lol!
I've been just really busy. I am also easily distracted too!!
But in 2023, I'll be spending a lot of time working on this story and moving it to AO3. However, I had originally intended to alter this story greatly. I want to improve and tweak it.
The Unknown, though, has to be my current favorite of the several fan fictions I'm working on.
✎*ೃ˚ 8. Hardest fic to work on? ✎*ೃ˚
To be honest, the fanfic 'Heated' has been bothering me. I continually experience writer's block and I dread writing the fic. I'm also finding flaws in the fanfic.
Don't get me wrong, I adore the fan vs. idol trope that "Heated" creates, as well as the fact that Naruto is the leader of a popular band and Hinata’s the cutesy fangirl, but…I find myself continuously modifying stuff in the fic, and I dread writing it.
I'm not sure what my deal is.
But, despite my frequent setbacks, I expect to finish the fic in 2023, hopefully at the end of spring.
✎*ೃ˚ 9. Writing lessons you learned this year? ✎*ೃ˚
I've learned that forcing myself to write is never the solution. I discovered that the best moment to write is when I am inspired, as well as when I have planned exactly what I want to write ahead of time.
I believe that you should never force yourself to write or create any sort of piece.
A dear buddy once said that it takes time to create a masterpiece, so give it some time! Do not rush the process!
@sessakag I'm looking at you, haha! 💜👀💜
I also just have advice in general, advice that I have learned myself this year as well.
Never, ever allow someone to force you to do anything. Do it on your own terms, when you are no longer preoccupied with life's hassles. You'll have a lot more fun with the process.
Don’t force something to be, is what I am saying. Things will play out as they should.
In 2022, I had to remind myself several times that writing is a passion, not a job. Calm down, Niya, sheesh! Lol.
✎*ೃ˚ 10. Most Anticipated Wip for Next Year. ✎*ೃ˚
Without a doubt, it's The Good Old Days. I am really excited to bring the ACA characters and the plot back.
I am very excited to share the crazy narrative of (A Crazy Accident’s) Naruto's past with my readers. I've been dying to write this particular fanfic for such a long time, and I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be publishing this fanfiction in 2023!
It’s about time, right, lol!

I hope you enjoyed reading my responses to the wonderful questions at the top. I have a lot planned for 2023, and I'm excited to see what I come up with as a result.
In 2022, I have accomplished a lot but I plan to accomplish even more in 2023. 💪🏽
Once again, thank you for the ask Chloe! I hope you've had a wonderful Christmas and equally wonderful start of the New Year! 💜🤍

Hii 🤗 9, 14, 16, 17 (I hope you don’t mind if I specify a little on this - and I hope it is okay to ask for old time’s sake but- I remember you once mentioning that Akane was to some degree inspired by Blair Waldorf. So I am curious if you’ve ever taking inspiration from Blair’s relationship with Chuck for either Raikane or Erik/Akane [or both somehow?]), 32, 50
Hi!!! I hope you've been well! Thanks for the ask!
9. When you write, do you plan out the stages of a relationship, or just let it flow? Do you have any works where the characters seem to "write themselves"?
Honestly, I just let it flow. Once I feel like I know the characters well, I just start putting them in situations to see what happens. In a lot of my Linzolt works the dialogue flows really easily while I'm drafting.
14. Are there any relationship dynamics/tropes you want to write in the future, but haven't yet?
Hmm...I don't think I've really tried the fake dating trope (or if I did, it was so long ago that I don't really remember it), but I'd be interested in doing something with that. I also haven't dabbled in the arranged marriage trope since that Eizan/Nene oneshot I wrote for the SNS fantasy AU, and I'd like to try that again.
16. Are there any relationship dynamics/tropes you enjoy reading about, but wouldn't want to write yourself? Vice versa?
I love reading a good slow burn, but I personally don't really have the writing stamina for it. I think I generally read the same fic genres that I write, but I probably write a bit more domestic fluff than I read.
17. Did you base [couple] on any existing relationships that you've seen? This can be anything: TV characters, books, even people you've known in real life.
Hmm...maybe a little! It's been years since my last Gossip Girl rewatch (I may have to start one soon), but I think when I first planned the original Portraits of 119 series and slated Akane/Erik as endgame, some aspects of Chuck and Blair may have seeped into their relationship. It was mostly small things like the way Blair was able to kind of cut loose around Chuck, and the way they always seemed to come back to each other. But that all got kind of muddled when Raikane became the fan favorite pair.
32. Do you find it more fun to write soft, domestic romances, or dramatic thrillers?
Soft and domestic has kind of become my brand as of late. However, I do sort of prefer writing lovers in somewhat tumultuous romantic situations rather than established relationships.
50. Free space! Brag on yourself! Advertise your writing! What are you most proud of recently?
I spent literal months working on Dissonance, which is my backstory on how Lin and Zolt met and first got involved with each other! I worked on that fic with an awesome beta and artist (who made this lovely companion artwork) and I'm really proud of how the whole project came out!
