Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness spoilers ❗🛑

As a Doctor Strange fan it makes me sad that every critic and analysis of the marvel fans is about every easter egg and cameo and references and how it ties into the next projects and yeah sure, that's what we do with every marvel movie/serie but- like still there's always the character fans who flood the internet with pictures and comments, metas, analysis about the character's arc. And even tho I know Doctor Strange has a little fanbase I thought he would become more of a favorite with this movie yet everyone's talking about the director and everything else than Stephen 🙄 so here are my favorite things of the movie about STEPHEN STRANGE because it's his movie!

Doctor Strange (2016) ends with Stephen keeping the broken watch as a reminder of his choice to serve the mystic arts. The Ancient One taught him that "it isn't about him" so he renounced to his old life as a neurosurgeon because there are other ways to safe lifes. He chose to use magic not to fix his hands (his life) but to help protect the world from bigger threats.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) ends with Stephen fixing the watch ⌚ because he's now facing his fears, he used it before broken as a reminder of Christine and his love for her, but he was scared and he knew he wasn't good for her (the new life style is dangerous) so he stood away from her to protect her. Then the 5 years passed and he comes back to find she's engaged. So fixing and stopping using the watch is a way to give closure to that part of his life (he knows now that they don't end up together in any universe).

I am so glad we got Donna Strange crumbs, with all the America and Wanda things going on they had some brain left to remember this was a Stephen movie. I would have preferred a flashback something we could see. But ok 😐

Christine's line "face your fears Doctor Strange" !?!? hello!? *chef's kiss* because you know the fact Stephen's lost almost every person he's cared about in his life and that's why he chooses to put his asshole personality as a protector barrier because he's afraid of loving and be loved because he knows how it always ends 💔 (his parents, Donna, Víctor, Christine, TAO, Mordo, Peter Parker)

Speaking of Peter, he remembers he helped Spiderman to return his variants to their universes but he doesn't remember he is Peter :( so he decides to adopt the next teen he meets lol

We are past typical orange magic shields! I was getting bored and frustrated 🥴 THANKS for the magic 🪄✨ variations in this movie: turns water into red wine, the thing he did to see the monster, then some green magic not time stone related, also Defender Strange using white/blueish magic, Defender Stranger absorbing Américas power, the thing he did with some monster hands to remote control them and kill Gargantos, I love how he and Wong team up so coordinated. Sinister Strange purple's magic, also that Stephen and our Stephen using the darkhold magic (red), dreamwalking on his variant's dead body while also controlling the souls of the dammed to create a cloak and fly but also those looked like vampire wings ?! NEAT.

You remember the scene where he freaks out he killed a Kaecillius (Dormammu)'s zealot?! he said he was never taking a life again so I wanted to see him haunted by how he had to proceed the only way the could win but by letting Tony die, sure he didn't kill him but I think he feels guilty

Even if you don't ship Ironstrange c'mon he saw 14M possibilities of the IW/EG in his universe and even if every scenario lasted 5 minutes that's more than a lifetime of knowing Peter and Tony, you cannot convince me they didn't get to be at least very good awesome-facial-hair bros 💔 Tony's sacrifice hurt as much as casting the spell to forget Peter, and as much as losing Christine or Donna 😭

So I'm mad none of what he's done for the world is mentioned here :(

((There WILL be spoilers mentioned for the books in the Grishaverse including the Crows duology & King of Scars duology! This is basically from the perspective of watching the show as someone who knows the books well.))

(Just a disclaimer that I’m picking up doing these commentary posts from here after season 2 is out! Just fyi, I might mention s2 stuff in these where it wasn’t mentioned in the posts for eps 1-3)

I love how they just toss in background book details in new places to color in the world! You can tell everyone working on constructing this show was such a massive fan of the books and it warms my heart

As always, I’m just enamored by the linguistics and writing systems the show has designed and fleshed out for all the languages!! They make the world feel so lived-in!

Poor Mal. He really feels so powerless and helpless; even to people who are super devoted, sheer faith and longing can’t keep people going forever.

I do appreciate this way of trying to make exposition about the Black Heretic story more active

And making the scene serve several purposes at once (Kirigan trying to draw Alina in with his ~relatable outcast~ stuff, as well as giving the viewers the backstory)

Again, I’m just glad these three got to be on-screen. It gives Mal other people around him that matter. (Which does then help fuel/motivate his devotion to Alina as we go forward.)

That was really also one of the things that bugged me about book!Mal (Although, to be fair, it might be less of a writing issue than a personal one) but it sticks in my craw when characters are single-person focused. (Unless that’s, like, part of their character shit to figure out, them feeling lonely or co-dependent, etc.)

Like I do understand it’s kind of been “Mal and Alina against the world” since they were young. But they haven’t always been together since they joined the military. Having relationships that span back for a long, long time can be powerful, don’t get me wrong. But length of a relationship isn’t the only measure of its importance.

I think part of it was that we only got Alina’s POV and so Mal in some parts of the series felt very one-note, unmotivated, unbelievable, etc. Because all we got was what he managed to say to Alina when he was actually present and interacting with Alina (which didn’t happen for a large part of books 1 and 3.)

I will never, in my life, get over Freddy’s acting as Kaz acting as a stuffy fancy ~artíst~

Ok so remember when this was the first sneak-peek scene they released of the Crows and we got to see them in action together for the first time??

It reminded me of my thoughts about Freddy’s voice as Kaz.

At first I was like “oh, hmm, he’s got kind of a higher, smooth voice as opposed to the way Kaz’s voice is described in the books” which is that rough gravely “rock-salt rasp.”

But as an iteration of Kaz (pluralism is my friend, you guys) Freddy’s voice for him is something I actually super love?

Like it’s a different sort of menacing. It can feel icy, if that makes sense. Like the higher register lends itself to his voice sounding cold, and the smoothness comes across as that kind of menacing sort of calmness. I dunno I just dig it.

I know we talk a lot about Inej’s knives (for good reason)

But dear saints I love Inej being invisible soundless sneaky.

I know she’d dislike me saying it, but honestly, she’s goddess material. This woman deserves to be lauded and honored at every opportunity.

What’s that meme again? “My idea of help from above is a sniper on the roof?”

Also, him waiting for the clock to chime to disguise the gunshot-!!!

The truth was she’d tried to sneak up on Kaz plenty of time since then. She’d never managed it. It was as if once Kaz had seen her, he’d understood how to keep seeing her.”]

Ok so we all agree that Kaz 100% did the same thing as with the magician he saw as a kid, right? Where he was obsessed with figuring out how the trick worked and unraveling it so he could learn to see what was actually happening?

Like [“Some people see a magic trick and say, “Impossible!” [...] And then there are the ones who stay awake, running through the trick again and again, looking for that skip in perception, the crack in the illusion that will explain how their eyes got duped; they’re the kind who won’t rest until they’ve mastered that little bit of mystery for themselves. I’m that kind.”]

INEJ WAS A PUZZLE HE THOUGHT ABOUT OVER AND OVER UNTIL HE FIGURED IT OUT

Lmao so basically my entire family hunts (northern woodlands, man) and I’m relatively sure my grandma has something that looks pretty much exactly like this

knowing our beloved nina, the amount of sheer willpower she’s dredging up to refuse food is seriously impressive

ok so this is actually super interesting?? Because it speaks to Matthias having subtle curiosities/doubts about grisha and not fully understanding why someone would become grisha since he believes (read: was told) they weren’t just born that way.

In the books we never got to see Matthias speak to Nina alone until the shipwreck, there was always either other drüskelle and/or the other grisha captives on the ship (I mean there are other captives tied up here but they aren’t all shoved into a cage together so Nina and Matthias can have their own conversation)

I really like this little peek into Matthias trying to make sense of the indoctrination he was fed

yeah exactly, he’s trying to assuage his doubts about how “human” feeling Nina is because it’s gnawing at the indoctrination of dehumanization he’s been taught

Also, i love the camera work in this scene -- the lights are all hazy with lots of lens-flares and the shots are so so tight and close!

We’re putting two characters whose circumstances of birth and country and beliefs are so diametrically opposed together. But here they’re having a brief moment of connection where they each have a glimpse of each other’s humanity (in between all the vitriol.)

By cutting in close and having the rest of the “world” feel “out of focus” or “out of shot” it’s allowing this moment to feel like they can be two people for a brief moment rather than grisha and drüskelle. I adore it.

Yeah, see and then when they start talking politics about the Darkling, more of the shots have the camera pulling back a bit, because the “world” outside the two of them is shoving distance back between them

(Obv this is not an exact one-to-one this mapping of shots, but the scene in general does that and its really cool)

And then it pushes back in and gets more hazy again when Matthias has a moment of decency and offers Nina the bread without strings attached

ofc then it falls apart because these two are the most stubborn (affectionate, exasperated) people on the entire planet who can’t EXIST without taking petty jibes at each other

Just taking a moment to appreciate Calahan Skogman because he plays Matthias so incredibly well

I’m hoping so damn hard we get to see the Ice Court job adapted so we can see Matthias get let out of detention so he can go run and play with the other kids at recess

These are the faces of two exhausted parents at the end of a frustrating day with their excitable son and I’m living for it

Ok but this troupe leader, Marko, actually comes off as such a wholesome guy? I lowkey love his face??

Inej entrusting Kaz with her knives DOES something to me, you guys

There is a fucking novel of unspoken words in these expressions I’m gonna gnaw my couch cushions in to piecessss-!

He’s so cute you guys I hope he still has a long and fruitful career even after all the fuckery that goes down at the Winter Fete

This whole scene has me gazing in adoration like a doting parent

Me to the person next to me, pointing, with a camcorder in my hand: Those are my kids!!! God, they’re so talented, I’m so proud of them!!

The fact that they made up entirely new playing card suits for this world-!!!

Honestly so much of what makes this world come to life in the show is thanks to how much AMAZING work the props and set people did???

They obviously loved and cared about the grishaverse so much, you can see in the sets and the costumes and the props how much work was put into making this world come to life and feel like a world that really exists with all its little bits and bobs and details!

That kind of worldbuilding minutia stuff just makes my brain go brrrrrr

Also I haven’t mentioned anything about the soundtrack yet but hot damn they’ve done so much to make it atmospheric but also do the A+ soundtrack thing of weaving musical themes for characters/groups

Ok tho Kaz 10000% could have gotten in as a performer too. Man’s got mad slight-of-hand skills he could definitely go in as a stage magician

It’s time for 🎶✨~Alina’s Emotional Mushroom Trip~ 🎶✨

Of course she was!

I feel like its super obvious that two orphan kids who’ve been through trauma and made a close connection would crave the stability of the life they have with a beloved friend, especially over an unknown where they would be alone and in a new place again having to start over???

I mean, she says she was thinking of Mal and not herself, but it’s both. Because him being alone would mean she would also be alone.

Alina was a scared little kid who had lost everything and was doing what she thought would keep everything she knew from being ripped away again.

I feel like in the books the dynamic of Darklina in the first book, it was obvious/deliberate that Alina felt very isolated at the Little Palace and so was kind of always steered back to the Darkling for scraps of affirmations or reassurances, plus the draw of their powers compounding this manipulation net the Darkling pulled her in by.

The dynamic feels different in the show, for a few reasons. I think Alina being aged up contributes to that. Also, we don’t get Alina’s interiority and descriptions of how her/the Darkling’s powers feel and pull her.

(Also Jessie and Ben have Very Good on-screen chemistry. And Ben Barnes is, well, Ben Barnes so the attraction-angle of the pull toward him is very believable.)

I mean, while Alina is aged up, she’s still a young woman. Her whole life she has overwhelmingly felt less than, invisible, and nothing special. And someone powerful is now telling her she’s unique and powerful and he’s the only one who understands her.

While Alina is still obviously manipulated heavily in the show, it feels less extreme? I don’t know how to word it?

Other contributing factors I think are her actually making closer friends at the Little Palace and that in the show we don’t see that extended period of time of her struggling and struggling and feeling like shit and powerless and “Other”-ed again. Also because we are shown that Mal DOES super care about her, rather than only getting her speculating and worrying.

And not only on Alina’s end is it different but I feel like the show we get shown more of Kirigan feeling helpless (something which is both authentic and strategic.)

Like I think its definitely real that he is struggling with these feelings of helplessness and futility in moving towards his goals.

But he is very deliberate in the ways he goes about showing it to Alina to make her feel like he’s letting his guard down with her and to garner sympathy with. As Baghra says towards the end of the season, giving Alina “a glimpse of the wounded boy.”

And it’s a huge credit to Ben Barnes that I feel that simultaneous nature.

Like in the moment, you do believe him in his pain and his loneliness. Because that is real.

But then you step back and realize he’s only showing it and showing it in such a way to weaponize it to cultivate those feelings of sympathy in Alina and keep her from seeing him as dangerous to her.

Ben Barnes’s performance really sells the Darkling so well. Because these things are all true: he has seen people die and is lonely and feels like he has to claw his way toward any change he can achieve.

But he is also playing bits of that up in very strategic ways in Alina’s presence to manipulate her.

(I always feel like I’m not gonna have more to say about the Darkling and then I end up writing a novel about it??)

Listen all I can think about when I watch this scene is how this actor probably spent 9 hours in hair and makeup and wardrobe just to stand there, grab a stack of letters, shake his head, and walk away because he was a non-speaking extra and if he said “No” out loud they would have had to pay him the under-5-lines rate

Get that shit outta here, Baghra, we celebrate interdependence in this household!!

Also, the entirety of season 2’s themes would also like a word with you 👀👀

I want to be clear that the reason I'm haunted by black sails is not its queer characters. It is because the show itself is in dialogue with the audience to ask you if you're thinking critically about the systems, institutions, and messages you're surrounded with every day, and if your own actions actually match up to your values.

Everyone else has already said it better than I have but this show says, "Everything is propaganda and if you aren't aware of that you will not be able to exert your free will."

I admit I don't watch much television but this is so anarchist I'm dumbfounded that it was allowed to be produced.

I recently felt paralyzed by pressure to Be Perfect in the context of providing image descriptions. Talked it through with some people and got to a place where I no longer feel that pressure. Wanted to share the results of the discussion in case it helps other people so we can have more people doing image descriptions.

Trying to make our digital communities as accessible as possible is something we will have to do as a group effort, from the ground up. We cannot rely on companies to do it for us.

Image and video descriptions:

You don't have to describe every post you reblog; it's a group effort, we're not each individually responsible for righting every wrong on the planet.

But you can make a good faith effort to see if there's already an image description in the notes that you can reblog instead.

If you're the OP and someone does an image description for you, you can edit the original post to include it for the benefit of future reblogs - saves everyone a lot of trouble and shows your appreciation for the description.

If you're making an original post, you're better situated than anyone else to write an image or video description since you know what the most relevant aspects of the medium are.

Descriptions don't have to be perfect!

They don't have to follow some specific syntax guideline.

They don't have to describe every single detail of the image, just the important parts.

You can rely on context to do some of the work for you!

Is the image targeted at a specific audience or fandom? Take some knowledge as assumed/given and don't worry about describing that part (e.g. instead of "a sketch of Geralt, a middle aged man with white hair dressed in armor, riding a horse..." try "a sketch of Geralt looking fondly at Roach, whose mane has been braided by Ciri" - you don't have to give the whole backstory every time you describe an image)

If you see someone say that you *must* do x or y - first, ignore the "must". Then, take some time to think about how the change in action would benefit the community and how and whether you can accommodate the change. Then, try incorporating the change as best you can, without beating yourself up if you can't. Everyone has different limits on their ability to contribute to different parts of accessibility. The goal is to all pull in the same direction, towards a kinder, more inclusive digital space.

If you are a creator and feel frozen when attempting to describe your own work, some options for you might be: a) ask a friend to help, b) put out a post asking for help, c) check the accessibility tags for people offering to help, etc.

emmett & jasper meta for anon

ok so remember back when midnight sun came out and I freaked out over all the jalice stuff in it?

the other line in that book that actually fucking wrecked me to the point where I still think about it and have to lie down was this one:

AND THAT’S JASPER. YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE HIM 💀💀

because emmett IS going to love him!!! 😭😭😭 the bond between them is so pure and simple and I have so many feelings about it.

from reading the original 4 books, one gets the sense that edward’s favorite brother is emmett, but emmett’s favorite brother is jasper. which is fucking hilarious and I love that for them (it’s ok, we all know edward’s favorite sibling is alice.)

and it makes sense because jasper and emmett just...complement each other so well. jasper is all brooding and tactical while emmett is like idk dude I just drink blood. emmett has been dealing with edward’s whiny existential angst for two decades by the time jasper shows up, so I’m sure he’d appreciate jasper’s decidedly non-whiny, more practical angst lmaoo. and jasper has already discovered, via alice, that having Fun people in his life makes a huge difference, that there’s power in being soft and kind and goofy.

whereas “lonely for three decades” alice needed to bond with a sibling who was like her—a “freak among freaks”—jasper, who was constantly surrounded by hostile emotions for 80 years, needed to bond with a sibling utterly unlike him: a pure of heart, dumb of ass himbo (albeit with hidden depths of empathy and wisdom.) even the line in the book recognizes it—edward is standing there hugging alice like “yes, this is gonna be my Person in the family” and then calmly directs emmett to jasper, because he already knows they’re gonna be important to each other.

jasper needed someone to help him relearn how to goof off. someone to playfully beat the shit out of in a situation where the only stakes are who has to mow the lawn later. someone to place stupid bets on trivial everyday things with, to invent ridiculous games like Emmett & Jasper Ultimate MegaChess with.

and emmett needed someone to just, like. PLAY with, period! someone who wasn’t gonna go “ugh, emmett, I’m not doing that it’ll mess up my hair” or “not now emmett, I’m rereading nietzsche” or “emmett, dear, you’re wearing a hole in the carpet, take it outside.”

I mentioned earlier that one of my favorite moments in the movies is when jasper and emmett come get edward for his ““bachelor party,”” and they all end up shoving each other around in the swans’ yard. that’s one of the only moments in the films where they actually feel like family to me. like yes, this is how actual brothers interact.

so yeah, the main thing I love about the emmett & jasper ultimate bro-down is that it’s rooted in pure wholesome dumbassery. jasper showed up and emmett said LET THERE BE FUN. and there was fun. and fifty years later there still is :’’’))))

You went to Bakugou's room to ask him why he didn't go to class and ask if everything was okay with him. Your heart sinks when you see him sitting on the bed, with his arms on his knees and with his head down. You could only hear a few sobs coming from Bakugou, making your heart feel even tighter.

‘’Get out of here.’’ He never cried in front of you because he didn't want to look ‘weak’ to you.

You approached and sat next to him, putting an arm around his neck and being completely silent.

‘’I told you to get out of here.’’ He tries to say cruelly to you but his voice breaks when you hug him even more. He just relaxes in your arms and you let him cry. You stay with him for hours just hugging him, showing that you are with him for anything and that you will not let him fall. And he was so grateful that you didn't leave, because he feels so safe in your arms, you are his safe haven.

You didn't know how to react when you saw Todoroki crying. You knew he was having some problems with his family and the pressure of school, and all you wanted was to be able to take all the pain out of your boyfriend.

You thought about leaving him alone but you wanted to help him in some way.

‘’Shoto?’’ You whispered as you ran your hand through his hair. ‘’Do you want to talk, my love?’’

Shoto just stayed silent and you thought he wanted you to go out and leave him alone, but when you turned around he pulled on his arm.

‘’Stay,’’ he whispered in a broken voice.

You just nodded and sat next to him, you let Shoto have his own time, and you just hugged him showing that you wouldn't let him carry that pain alone and that you would always be with him for anything .

When you saw Shinsou crying, your first reaction was to leave him alone and have his own time, you didn't want to leave him alone, in fact all you wanted was to be able to hug him tightly and not let him go anymore, but you knew that it was better to let him have his own time.

A few hours passed and you went to his room to see how he was doing and if he wanted to talk.

‘’Hey baby, how are you? Sorry to be away but I thought you wanted to be alone for a while...’’

He came to you and hugged you tightly and whispered a ‘’thank you’’ in your neck. You smiled and stroked his back, you kissed his forehead with love and you could feel him melting under your touch. God he needed it so much.

Costume plot!! make sure you've got a cuppa and a comfy chair!!

First time trying to upload documents on tumblr so fingers crossed the link works!! if not please let me know and I’ll screen shot the documents and post those so you can see what i’m talking about! I’m going to intersperse some images from 4x14 to make it look a little less texty and a little more fun - they don't always relate to what i'm talking about, but a couple do!!

I promised to do a ‘fake’ costume plot for you so that you could see an approximation of what the costume designer and wardrobe team are working with and from! The popular vote was for me to do 4x14 - Survivors. So that’s what I’ve done - you’re all evil for making me watch both the shooting and will scenes several times over, they get me every time! 😭😭😭

What this post will hopefully do is help you to understand the process of a wardrobe department on a tv series and show just how much work goes into making the magic happen! I’ll walk you through step by step as if I was the designer and show you each of the documents I would be creating as I move through the process - fingers crossed it will all make sense and be interesting for you.

I've put the rest under a cut to save your dash!

Okay, so first things first - you get hired to do the show (yay!!) this will come after you’ve had an interview with producers. Once you’ve agreed terms and signed on the dotted line, you’ll be given at least 1 script (as well as at the very least a season outline for each main and recurring character because often before production begins there will only be maybe 2-3 scripts ready) to read through before you go into a concept meeting. A concept meeting can vary, but generally speaking they’re about establishing a cohesive creative outlook for the production. On an established production this will be a shorter meeting, but is still needed to establish the tone of the series (perfect example of this is how S5 is much darker than previous seasons of 911 and this is where this would be established!) this meeting will involve other creatives and producers, so production designer, set designer, hair and make-up, SFX, directors, lighting designers etc.

After this you’ll go away and create a concept presentation if its a new show, but this may not be necessary on an established show unless you’re a new designer being brought in (like Alayna Bell-Price moving into the designer role from season 3 onwards). this will be presented to the producers to make sure a cohesive look is being created for the show.

You will go through a couple more rounds of meetings and each department will be honing and finalising concepts and designs. As costume designer this means developing a style for each of the main characters, colour ways for characters and an overall schematic for the show. It is very much at this point about getting to know all the characters - what makes them tick, their backgrounds anything that will help you create the look of a character and allow people to subconsciously gain an understanding of them when they watch. Eddie is a great example of this - his military background is an important but also an easy thing to play on, its why we see Eddie in lots of khaki and army fatigue colours, its also the reason his clothing looks smart but functional. we don't see him with rolled up sleeves the way we do with Buck, his work shoes are always a bit more polished than everyone else's and its very rare we see him without a watch.

It is during this process that many of the design choices I’ve written about in my metas will come into being, so things like Bucks white trainers, Christophers themed t-shirts and pyjamas (probably born of discussions with the set team!) or the check pattern theory I wrote about recently. Then from this stage you move into full preproduction!

Preproduction is when you (as Costume designer) get your full team together. Most teams will consist of the following along side the designer;

Assistant costume designer

costume supervisor

costume production assistant

costume buyer

set costumer (can also be known as key costumer)

trailer costumers (this role is also known as costumer)

on set tailor/ alterations team

dailies (for big scenes, will often deal with background cast and extras)

There will be a host of makers etc. involved, but they are usually a separate entity on show like 911, because Fox probably maintains a work room for all its productions, and so, for ease, I will be ignoring them for this project (we’ll assume everything is being brought in rather than made and we have our on set tailor/ alterations team to make alterations etc!).

Preproduction is a very busy and important time, because once production starts you have 10+ months of 14+ hour days ahead of you without a moment to breathe so you need to make sure you have everything that can be, in place because writers and producers can and will throw curveballs at you! While you’re getting your crew in place, you will also be working on the breakdowns I’m going to be talking about and that I’ve included in the excel document (the link is below!).

With your crew in place, as a team, you’ll start sourcing and acquiring equipment, costumes, meeting and measuring the cast, undertaking fittings and continuing to hone your ideas - this development stage is often the most exciting, because you can collaborate with the individual actors - gain an understanding about how they see their character, discuss colours and style. When you have good actors this will be a fun process but some come full of their own ideas and are unwilling to listen or take direction - these can be a nightmare (naming no names but I’ve worked with a few people like this and if they’re a big enough name they can try to pull rank ruin your concept!) thankfully it doesn’t seem to be the case on 911 because it’s fairly cohesive, especially considering the change in designers over the first couple of seasons!

Before we move into the nitty gritty I should mention terminology! There is a little bit of terminology to cover so you know what I’m talking about!

breakdown - there are two types of breakdown - the first is a break down of the script into scenes and sequences (more on this later), the other breakdown is a costume that has to be pre distressed before shooting - so this could be anything from distressing a flag patch, to making clothes look like they are tattered and worn (perhaps for a tramp!) or covered in soot, dirt or dust. There is usually a specialist role within a wardrobe team - breakdown artist - who will be responsible for this, but it could be a doubled up role with one of the other roles.

Action prop - this is something that an actor may take off and put down, or pick up and put on during a scene. Think things like helmets and hats, gloves, jackets, shoes. It’s important to note this because it won’t always be handed to the actor, or be handed back by the actor - it may very well be a set dresser or props manager. It should always be known who will be checking them out and back in and sometimes you’ll have to go on the hunt to find where they’ve ended up.

Ok the link to the spreadsheet is below - it should have 10 tabs - please let me know if its not working and I'll attempt to fix it (I have a mac and use numbers, so I've converted it into excel but I have no idea if it converted properly!)

Script breakdown - into scenes and sequences - the first tab on the spreadsheet

I should point out here, that, because I don’t know what the actual script looks like, I’ve had to rely on a bit of guess work, and using camera angles (which wouldn’t necessarily be detailed in a script, beyond possible close ups on faces!) so its not exactly accurate, its probably a fair bit more broken down than it would be via the script (because of editing!)but its close enough for our purposes! I’ve used time stamps so you can see how it relates to the episode, but obviously these wouldn’t be included in a real script breakdown!

Scenes are broken down into sequences and a sequence is a run of action taking place at the same time and same place - so for example at the beginning of the episode we see Eddie lying in the street, Buck pulled down by Captain Mehta, buck then scrambling under the fire truck, pulling Eddie under and out before hoisting him up and into the truck cabin. All of this will be one scene, but will form a sequence of 17. Once they’re in the truck and on the move, that’s a new scene.

The point of breaking the script down like this enables the designer to see who is in each scene. They can start to build up an idea of the costume requirements for that scene, if there are stunt doubles involved, how many replicas of the costume might be needed, how many extras are likely to be used and if it takes place outside.

Knowing if a scene is outside is an important factor because outdoor shooting requires extra stuff - such as spares, storage for wet costumes/ the ability to dry them quickly, additional layers for cast such as coats for between takes/ scenes.

Once this initial breakdown is done, it’s onto the cross plot. When I worked in film and tv, I used to make two versions of this - the first is the one I’ve done for you. It’s pretty simple and it’s meant to show you the cast requirements at a glance. Each scene is listed across the top and the cast down the left, then each scene the appear in a X is put in the box - it gives you a quick guide to which cast are used when (it’s a great indicator of how much time they’ll likely be in screen for in the episode!)

The second cross plot I do looks almost the same, but it will be done once we have a shooting schedule and it will be split up into shooting days and which scenes are scheduled to be filmed across the top so you can see which actors will be in on any particular day and which scenes they’ll be shooting so you can ensure you have the correct costumes ready. This document is a little bit of a movable feast because the schedule can get changed and new scenes added or cast can be added to scenes at short notice, but I used to update it as and when this happened so we always had a reference to quick check from!

The costume master lists

I haven’t created these, because it is a little tricky when I don’t have the items, or the labelling system they’re using, but basically this is the complete list of every costume item for each main cast member and any recurring and named guest cast.

Each item of costume or accessory will be given a stock code, this code will be written inside/ on the item and a full stock list will be kept - there is specialist software to create this - its basically an inventory or costume management system. very often they will just start assigning numbers from 00001 onwards, ,but I always liked to use the character initials where possible at the beginning (this is an especially good idea on shows where characters are in matching uniforms because its easier and quicker to keep track of when production is rolling) so for example; EB0001 would be the first item of Evan Buckley’s wardrobe and AG0234 would belong to Athena Grant.

A hard copy will hang on the front of their character rail in the store and a digital copy will be kept and updated as well - with new ones being printed to replace the hard copy as items are added/ removed. This will be the same for accessories - there will usually be a set of drawers for each character and it will contain all accessories such as watches, glasses rings etc. as well as their character underwear and shoes. There will be additional rails with their own lists for stock such as spare firefighter uniforms etc which can be used for extras when needed (these may very well be given a more generic numbering system!)

For example Eddie’s uniform shirts will be listed as short sleeve or long sleeve and how many of them you have for him so it might be;

long sleeve uniform button up shirt x 5 ED0045 - ED0050

Long sleeve uniform button up shirt for breakdown x10 ED0051 - ED0060

And so on! It’s a working document, so stuff will get added and taken away all the time as and when you know it won’t be used again - mostly stuff that’s been broken down or damaged during filming - but new items will not be assigned numbers that have been used before - so the numbers will keep getting bigger, so just because you might have an item labeled HW01234 doesn’t mean that Hen has 1234 items of costume in her section, she might only have 400 or so, its just the other 600+ items are from previous seasons or have been damaged during filming or broken down for specific scenes.

Character costume plot - the remaining tabs of the spreadsheet!

I’ve only done these for the main cast because if i did one for every character in this one episode, you’d all be going cross eyed and I’d have had a mental break down (its so much easier doing this when its for real I can assure you!!), it suffices to say that when it comes to characters such as Captain Mehta who are only in one scene, I’d have them all on the same spreadsheet rather than lots of separate ones! I’ve also had to leave a fair few blank squares because the camera angles etc don’t allow me to see what people are wearing (especially footwear and trousers), but the costume would be a full design because you don’t know what angles are going to be used so you have to think of absolutely everything!

This is broken down by scene and should list every item needed in that scene and if it needs to be broken down, if it’s likely to get dirty (fake blood is a pain to get out - especially from white clothing!!), if spares will be needed etc. This is also a working document - you’ll start off by just listing anything that might be mentioned in the script (they may have specified that Buck needed to be in white for the shooting scene because they wanted the blood splatter to be very visible) and because you’ll be reading the script time and time again, having meetings etc you’ll be able to flesh out from there - including if a specific item needs to fit with a character or series theme and arc (Buck in white shirts, Check pattern shirts etc).

It might start out with something as basic as saying t-shirt or shirt, trousers, boots/ shoes. But you might also put colour preferences in and as items are purchased/ made and decided on you can update the descriptions so Bucks white shirt for the shooting will go from white top/ shirt to white button up shirt with grey pinstripes.

It’s at this point colour theory and any specific stylistic choices will come into play. So for example there will be a stylistic costume arc for each character for the season and this could be about comfort levels around certain characters (as we’ve seen with Buck in 5a around Taylor) to the deliberate fraying of patches to indicate a characters state of mind. Using a specific colour on a character or a pattern (check and plaid theory I’m looking at you - because Christopher had a green plaid shirt on when he found out about his dad being shot!) to foreshadow, parallel or declare intentions. This will include things like designing logos to be printed on t-shirts or pyjamas (think Christopher space themed pyjamas) to ensure you have complete control over the messaging on them (because yes the dinosaurs and space themes are deliberate and will have come from those concept and production meetings and that’s why we see them in both set and costume)The idea of paralleling and foreshadowing will have been discussed with the writers and directors at this point. Collecting all this information as you’re creating the costume plot will help with the buying and or making and might lead to drawings or picture searches for reference.

As items are pulled from stock, (if you’re on season 4 things like jeans will have been kept from previous seasons for reuse and you’ll have kept uniforms) purchased (often your buyer will go out and buy 6 different tops for one scene and you then say yay or nay, try them on your actor and make a decision if it’s one you know you’ll need many duplicates of you can work with the shop to put stock back until you can confirm or in some cases make your own replicas!) and confirmed, the plot gets updated until you have a completed one. The uniforms will be the first things checked off because they’re fairly standard and as items are purchased and fitted they will be labelled and altered. Items such as Christopher space pyjamas may be designed and printed on plain pyjamas and this is the point it will happen This is the point when faux shirts/ tees will be noted for actor comfort and less bulk showing up on screen! (I’ve made guesses on this based on if it’s seen or not!)

I like to colour code mine for ease of reference when it comes to action props, breakdown and duplicates being needed etc, but others don’t. there are some gaps in this fake one I’ve done - because we don’t see on screen if and what they’re wearing (such as shoes etc) so I can’t fill it out, but there will be costume items chosen where the gaps are because you never know what camera angles a director is going to use!

You have to list every item of clothing the character is going to wear in the scene as well as any requirements (such as Eddie not having his LAFD tee on under the shirt when he’s in the truck because Buck needs to be able to easily rip it open and tend the wound).

You’ll see underwear listed and have probably chuckled, but as a designer you have to think of everything, and underwear is important because it might get seen, or could even be the costume itself. Often times you’ll go with the same type of underwear the actor them self wears, but you’ll have specific colours etc that you want to use. The perfect example of this is actually when we see Buck pull Eddie out from under the truck - we can see both Bucks socks and briefs/ boxers in this scene they’re both black so they don’t draw the eye - imagine how distracting it would be if Oliver was wearing socks with Brussels sprouts on and neon pink briefs!! 🤣🤣🤣

And yes I did make the silly picture to hopefully make you giggle!

This plot will then be divided up and written on separate sheets for scenes where the same thing is worn, along with an image of the costume (preferably with the actor in it, but this isn’t always possible) - this is for the set costumers to refer to and it will contain info about if items are taken off between scenes that are being shot at the same time so the costumer responsible for that actor can ensure they keep track of everything. Perfect example of this is when in the truck Eddie’s radio and radio harness are removed - the set costumer will need to be aware of this and collect it for resets and end of shooting. (Radios would probably fall under the remit of the props department, I’ve listed them as part of costume for this exercise, but what is prop and what is costume would’ve been decided in preproduction!)

So after all of this you should be in a position to keep track of everything and successfully costume a show - as you can see it’s a lot of work and I’ve not even gone into the day to day running of a department, the sourcing of costumes, budget tracking or all the fun that’s to be had along the way!! These plots work just as well for theatre as they do film, with just a few adaptations (no need to do sequencing or shoot schedules etc!) and it’s important to remember that you’ll be constantly creating new breakdowns, cross plots and character costume plots as you get the scripts for the next episodes and shoot schedules!

A typical day on set when production is up and running will consist of taking each characters costumes to their trailer before cast arrival (yes it often means silly early starts!!) assisting with any dressing that’s needed. then its off to set if your the set person/people for the day - holding onto any bits of costume not is use at any given time, having changes ready if items are being damaged or destroyed during takes, and general supervising! if you’re not a set person, you’ll be doing laundry and prep work, this means putting all those worn costumes through the wash (yes including the underwear!!), getting it dried, doing the ironing, returning costumes to the correct racks, running errands (such as dry cleaning) running repairs if they need doing and setting up for the next day of shooting - pulling costumes ready to go out the following morning.

Hopefully this has all made sense and has been interesting and useful to show what goes into costuming a show like 911! I had great fun getting to step back into the costume world for a little bit.
