#Goncharov 2024
Text
Since the recent talks surrounding a remake have been going around, I thought it might be fun to do a fan cast, so here is my Modern™ fan cast for Goncharov (2024):
Goncharov: Michael Fassabender
Im not saying he could ever replace Robert De Niro, because truly Goncharov is one of his best roles and he played it so extremely well, but visually Fassabender feels right - plus we've seen him play tortured and lovelorn and morally ambiguous so i think he'd be a good recast.

Andrey Daddano - Oscar Isaac
I dont know, it just feels right- and again, while Harvey Keitel did amazing... just imagine this man in an eyepatch
Tumblr media
Katya Michailova - Amy Adams
Who better to play such a complex feminine character than multi-award winner Amy Adams, I feel like she could really provide an incredible take on the character of Katya.
Tumblr media
Mario Ambrosini - Keanu Reeves
No one could ever out do Pacino in this role, no one at all but someone I think could at least try is Keanu.
Tumblr media
Sophia - Rachel Weisz
now she might be leaning a bit old for the role but i just feel she would give this character its due and she would do it well.

And finally everybody's favorite...
"Ice Pick" Joe - Brett Gelman
I don't know why, but I feel like Gelman could really match the energy we received from John Cazale's performance.

“You’re already dead darling. This is a mercy, not a murder” Goncharov (1973)
As always I’m late to the hype, but I finally sat down and watched this movie and wow. Just wow.

Oblomov, I. Gončarov, 1859

Okay so everyone has their opinion on Goncharov (1973) and they're all cool... but if there's one thing we can agree upon, is how the ending is completely open to interpretation.
I mean I guess you can say the entire film can be interpreted how you please, but, there's just something about the ending that is so beautiful
Which brings me to my main point
I think Goncharov survived
How? You may ask. Well it's simple
Don't get me wrong, the stab scene is very very real. There was nothing fake about the homoerotic apple sharing, the orchard, and Goncharov's last smile towards Andrey..
But we must remember, it is heavily implied Goncharov knew about Andrey's betrayal. I think he craved it. In his twisted mind, It was some kind of atonement for all the wrongs he had committed
We must not forget about Andrey's feelings for Goncharov (heavily implied). It's almost like he'd take Goncharov's place instead. But alas! Goncharov had lied to him. He betrayed Andrey first...
Katya watched to make sure Andrey pulls it off. There was no way Goncharov would have made it out alive
So he yeah he got stabbed.
But we saw the stab through Katya's pov
Goncharov had just enough time to let Andrey know that he lied to save him. Andrey knew that if he refused to pull it off they would both die
And one thing everyone seems to forget that Andrey was a surgeon's apprentice in his teenage years. (It was only mentioned once in passing). He would absolutely know how to stab someone without them dying.
Also why else would Goncharov unbutton his own shirt and whisper, "right here, here is where our salvation lies..."
And the last hug, Andrey's tears and Goncharov's blood mixing together. Their last embrace. It was like a last goodbye. Andrey knew either way, whether he lived or died, he'd never see Goncharov again.
Of course Katya came over to check but death is very easy to fake especially when the guy is literally lying in a pool of blood
And lastly, Goncharov never had a grave, only a memorial stone. Ik Ice Pick Joe was supposed to help clean up his body but remember, he did owe Goncharov one favour. What if this was it????
I'm sure I'm overthinking but then the last scene leaves me no choice????
Who was that old man with the golden watch, the same that Goncharov's father used to wear?
