Goggomobil TS-250 

The Goggomobil TS 2+2 Coupe was introduced at the 1957 IFMA exhibition along with a modified sedan. There are TS250, TS300 and TS400 and the numbers indicate displacement in cubic inches. The only major design change for the TS was a change from a suicide door to a conventional swing door in 1963 from serial number 02-211271. Coupes were always 10-20% more expensive than sedans. The cumulative production volume of TS was 66,511 units.Not only more expensive, but also a lot rarer than the sedan models, were the sports coupe models. There were some 210,000 units produced of the sedan version, and only some 66,000 units of the sports coupe. Quite a difference. Unfortunately, only a small number of these remain. In 1966 the company was taken over by BMW. 3 years after the takeover, the production of midget cars was stopped and they continued under the name "Glas Isar", after which they started to concentrate more on more luxurious and especially larger cars.

This model sports an air-cooled, 250-cc, two-cylinder, two-stroke engine located under an access panel flush with the bed and behind the rear wheels. It rolls on four 10-inch wheels, and the rear end is geared down slightly to handle payloads.

In addition to the driver, the truck can hold one passenger who rides on a wafer-thin, flip-down seat. Two sliding doors akin to a UPS delivery truck — German postal workers used Goggo vans as official vehicles — complete the cab, whose floor is covered with wooden slats.

To accommodate the sliding doors, the truck’s roof and walls extend past the rear window nearly half the length of the bed. It’s as though the van body were chopped off just ahead of the rear axle. This styling touch also creates a little extra storage space: Because the entire bed is raised to accommodate the motor, the cab’s floor extends about two feet past the back wall.

Weighing in at a scant 1,300 pounds, the Goggo is about 9 feet long, 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. It can travel at up to 65 mph and achieves up to 24 mpg. Its wheelbase alone is more than 4 feet shy of a basic 2010 Chevy Silverado regular cab.

Built from 1955 to 1964 by Hans Glas GmbH of Dingolfing, Germany, the Goggo pickup shared platforms with a two-seater coupe, four-seater sedan and a “Transporter” work van, and it originally cost about $1,000. Nearly 300,000 Goggos were built. Of those, about 3,600 were Transporters, mostly vans.

Found some of the cutest classics money can buy on a well known auction site starting with e. And they’re not going for silly money. More than I can afford, but not silly money.

First up is this glorious little Glas Goggomobil

A German car with a definite Italian look about it, this rare TS250 Coupe is being sold as a non-running project. The good news is the car is pretty much complete and original. Having spent most of it’s 59 years in South Africa it’s almost rust-free too. A cracking little motor for £8.5k. Here’s the eBay link

Next, and just a pretty is another tiny classic, this Autobianchi Berlina

Dating from 1966, it’s got Italian good look in a small package – a stylish alternative to the more commonly seen Fiat 500, with which it shares many mechanicals. Here’s the eBay link

Finally, for now, is this 1962 BMW Isetta… the classic ‘bubble car’. It’s not cheap, at a shade under £14k, but I’ve seen them a lot more expensive than this…  it purports to be in excellent nick, dry stored for a number of years. The foundational car of modern BMWs was 1962’s Neue Klasse - which also gave birth to the 1602/2002. Redesigning that car was a daunting task, but its replacement, the #e12 5-series, was a gem. Like the Neue Klasse, it was also a car of firsts. The e12 was the first #5series and the first car to debut BMW’s now-familiar naming model names. Launched in 1972 with a pair of 2-liter fours (the carb’d 520 and injected 520i), it was the first new car to come out of the #BMW Dingolfing plant, formerly the site of the Glas/Goggomobil production. - It might seem unusual that the 5-series was launched with only four-cylinder engines, but remember that the Neue Klasse had used only fours, and in 1970-71 when the e12 design was being finalized, sixes were the province of the larger e3 sedans. But 5-series range was quickly expanded - with the M30B25 Six joining the line in 1973 as the 525, and the M118 four arriving for 1974 as the economy model 518. With the 2002 being replaced by the e21 3-series in 1976, the e12 had room to grow upward - and in time a gaggle of six-cylinder engines were offered from the relatively humble 525 with a pair of Zenith carbs and 143hp to the 3.5L M90-powered #M535i (precursor to the M5) with 210 injected hp. - Only six-cylinder versions were sold in the U.S., so here the e12 is primarily remembered as a six-cylinder car. Paul Bracq’s sharp styling was a study in contrast to the e12’s main competitor, the conservative Mercedes W114. Both were Bracq designs - he’d worked for Mercedes before his 1970-74 tenure at BMW. Sleek, modern, and distinctly BMW with its shark nose and subtle Hofmeister kink, the basic lines would translate through its 1981 replacement, the e28, which has to some extent overshadowed the e12. - This Jadegrün 1978 528i isn’t a U.S. model, however. As the slim bumpers suggest, it’s a Euro-spec car that lived most of it’s life in Columbia (it’s a @bringatrailer alum). The Euro 528i made slightly more power than the U.S. spec version, which replaced the 533i in 1979. In recent times it has gained a bunch of cool period accessories including a #Zender air dam and wheels, and had a NOS pair of green #Recaro buckets up front.
