THE SUPERMAN STARTER READING LIST
SO – you want to read Superman comics, but you’re intimidated by the near-century of history this character has. Or, you’ve read a few comics with him, but you want to go back to the basics to understand his character and the mythology surrounding him. There are so many continuities, origin stories, and standalones – where do you start? Well…
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a cropped edit of the Superman ‘78 #3 variant cover by Lee Weeks, showing Lois Lane sitting on the letters of the Daily Planet globe, and Clark flying above her in his Superman costume, reaching out to take her hand. Hand-written next to them is: "THE SUPERMAN STARTER READING LIST", and hand-written in the bottom right corner is: "by MYTHIC / superfam.tumblr.com". End ID.]
This list isn’t intended to be a full, comprehensive guide to Superman’s decades of history, but a curated taster of Clark Kent in the comics medium. It aims to show you a variety of interpretations from different authors of different contexts, but with the broad goal of helping newcomers understand the heart of the character. Not every comic is able to sum up all aspects of Superman, and some could be argued to miss certain points, but each one has been selected for this list for the goal of conveying the history and breadth of his interpretations.
It’s intended to be accessible to both long-dedicated comics fans and people who are new to the DC universe, or even the medium as a whole. As such, new fans are welcome to enjoy each story as a standalone interpretation.
Please understand that this list is built from my own experience with the character, and I don’t claim it to be better or worse than any other – it’s just one way to approach his history. Essentially, I’m attempting to create the sort of list I wish I had access to when first reading Superman comics. I highly encourage the reader to form their own interpretations of each work.
With all that out of the way, please enjoy!

All three are smiling. The background, which depicts a disaster scene and a defeated Lex Luthor chained to a building, is covered in a translucent blue overlay. Hand-written next to Clark is: "ORIGINS". End ID.]
SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN #1-6 (2009-2010) Geoff Johns & Gary Frank
Just a couple years before the 2011 reboot of the DC Universe, a new definitive origin story was created for a Superman post-Infinite Crisis (a major event which had changed the status quo of the multiverse).
Secret Origin is only six issues long, and a great, efficient introduction to Clark Kent and Superman. It focuses on telling Clark’s origins from his own perspective, as a hero but also simply as a person. It also does a good job of setting up important supporting characters including Lois, Jimmy, Perry, and Lex.
SUPERMAN: BIRTHRIGHT #1-12 (2003-2004) Mark Waid, Leinil Francis Yu & Gerry Alanguilan
Though replaced by Secret Origin only a few years later, Birthright was written as the definitive origin story to overwrite Byrne’s 1986 reboot of the character. It was intended to bring Superman into the new century, and be more consistent with his modern interpretations. It is also influenced by the popularity of the TV series Smallville.
Birthright is longer and covers aspects of the Superman mythos in further depth, including dynamics between Clark, Lex, and the city of Metropolis, kryptonite, and Krypton in general. Due to its extended length, it also covers more on Clark’s relationship with his powers and heritage.
I highly recommend reading both modern preboot origins to experience different interpretations with different influences and intentions, even only a few years apart.

[Image ID: An edit of Tim Sale's artwork from Superman: For All Seasons. On the right, Clark lies on his bed, looking to the left with a wistful expression and with a hand on his dog curled up next to him. The background, which is his cluttered bedroom in Smallville, is overlaid with translucent grey. Hand-written to the left of Clark is: "INTROSPECTION". End ID.]
SUPERMAN SMASHES THE KLAN #1-3 (2019) Gene Luen Yang & Gurihiru
This standalone story is set in 1946, and primarily draws upon the Golden and Silver Ages as inspiration. It’s an adaptation of an episode of The Adventures of Superman radio series, “The Clan of the Fiery Cross”, which famously dealt a major hit to the KKK’s operations in America by influencing public perceptions.
The story follows Clark as well as siblings Roberta and Tommy, two Chinese-American kids who have recently moved to the Metropolis suburbs, as they uncover and fight a local chapter of the KKK. The story explores themes of immigrant identity and self-acceptance in Clark and the kids’ narratives – it presents important concepts from Superman’s history, straight from the heart of his character, in a really effective way.
SUPERMAN: FOR ALL SEASONS #1-4 (1998) Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale
This miniseries has four issues, each corresponding to a season and narrated by an important person in Clark’s life (in order: Jonathan ‘Pa’ Kent, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Lana Lang). Tim Sale’s beautifully detailed and expressive art captures the complex emotions drawn out by having your life touched by Clark Kent, which works really well with the personal, confessional style of the narration. It’s a very intimate work.
It’s a great insight into both the triumphs and very personal struggles of Clark through the inner voices of some of the most important people in his life, and captures what makes his character work really well.
FOR THE MAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING (SUPERMAN (1939) ANNUAL #11) (1985) Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons
This is a single-issue annual from right before the DC universe was rebooted, and (unsurprisingly for Moore) explores some philosophical and ideological questions regarding the Man of Steel. On his ‘birthday’, Superman falls prey to an alien organism called The Black Mercy, which feeds on its victims while keeping them complacent with vivid hallucinations of their greatest desires. Clark hallucinates a still-living Krypton, which he is a part of – but perhaps not everything is perfect.
SUPERMAN: BRAINIAC (ACTION COMICS #866-870) (2008) Geoff Johns & Gary Frank
Before retelling Superman’s beginnings in Secret Origin, Johns and Frank collaborated on this story arc which massively changes the status quo, partially by reintroducing a variety of pre-Crisis concepts including the original Brainiac and the bottled city Kandor. If you liked Secret Origin, you’ll probably like this one.
As this is our first story arc rather than self-contained story, it has more references to the ongoing continuity but is still easy enough to understand without that context. This story also prominently features Kara Zor-El as Supergirl and expands on some cosmic lore and Krypton in general.
SUPERMAN: UP IN THE SKY #1-6 (2019-2020) Tom King & Andy Kubert
This is an accessible, self-contained exploration of the extent of Superman’s moral fibre, following Clark as he attempts to save a single girl who was abducted from Earth and taken into space. It’s quite abstract at points with the questions it asks about themes of compassion and commitment, which I think is conveyed particularly well in the panelling and artwork.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: An edit of Frank Quitely's artwork from All Star Superman. Clark in his Superman outfit is flying with his arms outstretched. The top half of his face is cut off. The background is an abstract depiction of the heart of the sun, and has been overlaid with a translucent orange. Handwritten beneath Clark is: "INTERPRETING AND RE-INTERPRETING". End ID.]
THE K-METAL FROM KRYPTON (drafted 1940, restored 2004-2011) Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster Studio
The K-Metal from Krypton is an unpublished and unfinished comic from 1940, written by Superman creator Jerry Siegel, and drafted by the studio of the other Superman creator, Joe Shuster. After being lost for decades, the story has slowly been recovered and restored by Superman fans.
Though this one is much more unconventional than the other items on the list, I think it’s extremely important to Superman’s history and generally understanding him as a character. It comes from a time when creative control of their character was being taken from Siegel and Shuster, and though it is unknown why this story was unpublished, that’s a major point of context to keep in mind.
This draft sets up the predecessor to kryptonite in the Superman comics – “K-Metal” – and also contains a scene where Clark reveals his identity to Lois, and they agree to be partners in helping others. This is a major departure from the status quo of Clark keeping his secret from Lois as she tries to uncover it, which would continue for the rest of the Golden and Silver Ages.
The restoration effort can be read online: http://theages.superman.nu/k-metal/splash.php
THE MAN OF STEEL #1-6 (1986) John Byrne & Dick Giordano
This limited series is the immediate post-Crisis origin story and reinvention of Superman. It wasn’t put in the Origins section because I think from a modern perspective it shouldn’t be an introduction to Clark, but rather something you read to understand the history of his character.
It originated major changes in the Superman mythology, some of which have become instilled in it (such as Lex Luthor and Lois Lane’s modern characterisations), and others which have been forgotten or discarded.
One major thing is the great effort this origin made to make Clark American over being Kryptonian… Byrne has expressed great distaste of portrayals of Superman which emphasise his immigrant identity, and that should be kept in mind while critically reading this work.
ALL-STAR SUPERMAN #1-12 (2005-2008) Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely
Arguably the most critically acclaimed Superman comic, this has been saved for late in the list as I believe it’s enhanced with more context of and experience with Clark. This is a series which explores the nature of storytelling and legacy, which was created with the aim of creating a timeless Superman story.
When Superman learns he will soon die, what does he reflect on? What does he change? This is heavily inspired by, and is a love letter to, Silver Age Superman.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW? (SUPERMAN #423 & ACTION COMICS #583) (1986) Alan Moore, Curt Swan & George Pérez
Written in the wake of Crisis on Infinite Earths, this is another story about Superman ‘dying’, and is essentially a great mediation on and send-off to the Silver Age incarnation of the character. It refers to itself as an “imaginary” story, and can be seen as one concrete ending for this version of Clark Kent and the rest of the Superman characters, in a medium with few.
It can be found in a collection with For the Man Who Has Everything.
SUPERMAN: RED AND BLUE #1-6 (2021) Various
To finish off our starter reading list, let’s move from Superman’s end to his future. This is an anthology of short stories from various authors and artists, exploring a spread of visions of the Man of Tomorrow.
I think it’s an appropriate end for this starter exploration of Clark Kent’s many interpretations! As with all anthologies, it has its ups and downs in quality, but as a whole I truly believe it captures the heart of this character.
Thank you for reading all this way. I really hope this reading list helps you delve into the character of Superman and inspires you to read further beyond what I’ve suggested here.
Most of all, I hope it helps at least some people grow to love Clark Kent as much as I have.
A PDF version of this reading list is available here.

MINOR CHARACTER MARCH MADNESS
Tumblr media
Get ready for a March Madness Tournament for all the kid characters who exist only in the background, or only once, or just not nearly enough times in South Park. Each poll will last a day, with multiple polls going every day (at least for the start). I tried my best to pick truly minor characters but if you think one isn't minor enough or are sad I forgot one... sorry I don't feel like rearranging the entire tournament at this point 😅
Each character has been sorted into seeds 1-16 based on how prevalent I think they still are in people's memories and then paired up just like regular March Madness (i.e. 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, etc) so apologies if some early match ups seem unfair. It'll hopefully make any upsets that much more exciting!
And now... the bracket!

Growing up at Beale Air Force Base, CA there were black projects and then there were Deep black…. projects …I’m just finding out about many of them now.
“The goal is simple, but the problem is titanic. Get photos of the top-secret Red Chinese hydrogen bomb tests near the Mongolian border deep inside Asia, then get them back, without being detected “ to do this, they needed a MD 21. Which is a cousin of the SR 71.
In the Back Lot of the Pima Air & Space Museum You Can Discover History.
1547 Hrs. December 20, 2009. In the Back Storage Yard of the Pima Air & Space Museum Outside Tucson, Arizona.
Most of what is lying around in the dusty expanse of the aircraft graveyards around Tucson, Arizona is readily identifiable
But there… What is that strange, manta-ray shaped, dusty black thing lying at an angle just on the other side of that fence? It may be an old airfield wind vane or radar test model. But it also may be…
I quickly locate a spot where the entire fence line opens up. I skirt the fence and in a couple minutes running around the sandy airplane corpses I’m inside. There, sitting right in front of me on its decrepit transport cart and dusted with windblown sand, abandoned in the Sonoran Desert, is one of Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich’s most ambitious classified projects from the fabled Lockheed Skunk Works….
I just found the CIA’s ultra-secret Mach 3.3+ D-21 long-range reconnaissance drone. The D-21 was so weird, so ambitious, so unlikely it remains one of the most improbable concepts in the history of the often-bizarre world of ultra-secret “black” aviation projects. And now it lies discarded in the desert. The story behind it is so bizarre it is difficult to believe, but it is true.
July 30, 1966: Flight Level 920 (92,000 ft.), Mach 3.25, Above Point Mugu Naval Air Missile Test Center, Off Oxnard, California. The MD-21 takes off.
Only another M-21 is fast enough and can fly high enough to photograph this, the most classified of national security tests. Traveling faster than a rifle bullet at 91,000 feet, near inner-space altitude, one of the most ambitious and bizarre contraptions in the history of mankind is about to be tested.
Tagboard” is its codename. Because of the catastrophic May, 1960 shoot-down of Francis Gary Powers’ Lockheed U-2 high altitude spy plane over the Soviet Union the CIA and is in desperate need of another way to spy on the rising threat of communist nuclear tests. Even worse, the other “Red Menace”, the Chinese, are testing massive hydrogen bombs in a remote location of the Gobi Desert near the Mongolian/Chinese border. It would be easier to observe the tests if the Chinese did them on the moon. Flat, triangular, black, featureless except for its odd plan form as viewed from above, like a demon’s cloak, it has a sharply pointed nose recessed into a forward-facing orifice. That’s it. No canopy, no cockpit, no weapons. Nothing attached to the outside. Even more so than a rifle bullet its shape is smooth and simple. This is the ultra-secret D-21 drone. The D-21 is truly a “drone”, not a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA). Its flight plan is programmed into a guidance system. It is launched from a mothership launch aircraft at speed and altitude. It flies a predetermined spy mission from 17 miles above the ground and flashes over at three times the speed of sound. It photographs massive swaths of land with incredible detail and resolution. And because of its remarkably stealthy shape, no one will ever know it was there
Despite a successful launch the D-21 drone was lost. In the middle of 1972, after four attempts at overflying Red China with the D-21 drone and four mission failures, the program was cancelled. It was imaginative. It was innovative. It was ingenious. But it was impossible.
So ended one of the most ambitious and outrageous espionage projects in history.

I very much remember Coppola, with whose work I'd just become acquainted at age 15 or so, announcing he was going to remake the Universal Monster stuff using the source material.  And as a teen, I was jazzed.  Let's kick the dust off, ditch the stuffy 1930's stylings (I'd never seen the movies at this point) and lets make a Dracula for the 90's!
All I can really remember from that first movie is that it was... a lot.  The reviews were mixed, but everyone was going to see it, and I was in a packed theatre when I watched it myself.
Honestly, I remember thinking "well... that was a lot.  And I get why the reviews were mixed."  Halloween night of '93, I went to see the original, and was like "oh, wow.  This is rad.  I get why people love this." and, in fact, my interest in horror movie monsters I'd had as a kid was reignited (along with a VHS copy of Phantom of the Opera) to the point where I'm annoying about it to this day!
Over the years, I've not returned to the Coppola movie because (a) I didn't like it all that much to begin with, and (b) there's so many Draculas.  And one gotta catch 'em all.
Since seeing this back in '92, I've since read the novel, watched the 1930's original many, many times, seen some sequels to that, watched the Hammer films, watched a clutch of other vampire films and Dracula adaptations - including stage plays, read Carmilla, and basically laid down what I think is a solid foundation.
This movie is super strange.
Like, look.  It's got some amazing ideas, and beautiful visuals.  My exposure to the movie in the internet age has been largely through stills and gifs, and given the dedication to the visual that this movie embraces, its a reminder that the film has some stunning photography, FX, design, costuming, etc....  It's an absolute "spared no expense" endeavor.
I actually love the fact that the movie uses weird edits and dissolves - the peacock feather to the sun, etc...
You can't ask for a better cast in 1992.  This is a post Silence of the Lambs Anthony Hopkins getting to play all the cool roles, a height of her fame Winona Ryder, Richard E. Grant, Cary Elwes, Billy Campbell, Keanu Reeves, and fucking Tom Waits as Renfield.  And, of course, a young Gary Oldman showing everyone what Gary Oldman can do.
Look, the movie isn't the book, full stop.  Since Lugosi made women swoon in the stage show of Dracula and then in theaters (no, really), the story of Dracula has become weirdly morphed from "agent of Satan slowly murders virgins" to "eternal love story".
The book provides nothing like the pre-credits sequence to explain why the Count became an agent of the devil other than it sounded like a fun sort of thing to do.  There's no suicide of a wife, no war with the Turks.  There's no attempt to humanize Dracula by giving him a reason he might turn to the forces of darkness with which the audience might sympathize.
There's just no love story between Dracula and anyone else in the book.  There's Mina having a mix of shocking sympathy for her tormentor (because she's a good person) and a bit of Stockholm Syndrome in the final chapters.   I have read that a lot of the past lives stuff is borrowed from a different Stoker novel about mummies, but it feels straight taken from the Boris Karloff movie The Mummy.  Which makes me wonder what Coppola planned to do for his remake there, had they proceeded as planned.
There's nothing wrong with making the story a romance - that's what vampire stuff does, I guess.  But Bram Stoker's Dracula essentially turns the story of Dracula into Mina cheating on her boyfriend while he's at work with a dude with no job and a soul patch.  She'll insist they made such a connection (and, ironically, he's also juggling three other ladies she doesn't know about) and she's going to act nuts about it because she's invested so much into her secret little fling when she should write her dude and admit she's banging someone else.
The end result is that no one in the movie is anyone you care about except for maybe Van Helsing.  Mina seems like a dupe, Jonathan is wishy-washy, Lucy is narrative cannon fodder as the horny girl in a horror movie, and the three suitors are stripped of any qualities other than they sure are in the movie, and one has a hat.
Because the movie leans into Mina and Vlad's secret affair, it chews through a lot of plot time and also sets the pacing of the movie somewhat different from the novel.  By necessity, this means - so the movie isn't even longer than what feels like a very, very long two hours - the other characters get some short shrift and plotlines get condensed.  And that's... fine?
Surely this movie's love affair works for someone out there, just as the Bella/ Edward romance works for a lot of people.  And I'm not opposed to it on its face, I just don't think this movie pulls it off in a way that makes you (a) cheer for the romance or (b) be horrified by Mina's seduction.  It just sorta rolls out, and the dramatic irony of Mina having no idea what's really happening becomes tedious.  And tedious is not good for movies.
I don't blame either actor here (even if sometimes Ryder's Ryderism in her voice gives the game away).  Oldman is maybe at an 8 at his lowest and an 11 for good chunks of the film, but that's what's called for.  Ryder is playing what she's got, but it's hard to know what that is.  We don't get much of who Mina is until she's already in crisis.
What we clearly do get is the idea that this is sexual repression, Victorian style.  And Dracula is supposed to prey on the unspoken horniness of the women - with Mina clearly trying to push Jonathan's Victorian sensibilities, and of which Lucy seems keenly aware as she uses the barest hint of a sexual nature to keep three dudes with options on the line.
At the time of the movie's release, between fighting prudishness and lots of blood, this was seen by some as a movie for the AIDS/ HIV era, which... I don't think Coppola probably thought about even once.  It's the sort of observation made that is more about how the movie reflects the times, and what the viewer might bring to the film.  I don't think (but don't know) it was made for such a comparison - especially when the novel is clearly about science wrangling with unknown diseases, and the movie skips a lot of that element.  Except...
Our intro to Van Helsing has him discussing syphilis in a medical classroom, and making clear connections between STDs and the moral nature of man, which was quite the rage in the 90's.  I doubt that bit would make the cut in 2023, and it's an odd tie to Van Helsing as mystic scientist and Dracula-chaser.
Flipping the script of the seduction of Mina is the imprisonment and seduction of Jonathan.  What is curious is that the movie never deals with what Mina knows about Jonathan's time away, how he delivered that info, etc... as it seems she's fully aware of the situation, and  we are robbed of her own reaction.  It's a lot, and she just seems like she's taking it all in stride.  Which, I guess if you've been shtupping a mysterious Eastern prince, you don't make a lot of fuss when your man tells you three hot women forced him into sex daily for a month.
What the movie does offer is spectacle upon spectacle.  And that isn't necessarily wrong.  The portion of the novel that's Jonathan's POV gets really weird, really fast.  But it can be the difference between Jonathan seeing a glimpse of what seems to be wolves in the woods and us seeing Jonathan's wagon from the shoulder POV of wolves, as the movie does.  The suggestion that the count moves unnaturally versus the obvious floating and zipping around the count does on screen that leaves nothing for the viewer to share Jonathan's uncertainty.  But this is a matter of taste.
I do enjoy the "this is a soundstage" look and feel to the exterior shots and the swing-for-the-fences design, including some of the stuff that's a bit risky to try as it can *feel* like it's trying.  The movie really is gorgeous, and there's a reason the stills that people post every Halloween have made me want to revisit the movie.
Is it scary?  I mean - I think it has its moments.  And it embraces the weirdness of Renfield and Dracula himself as well as any version.  But without really *caring* about Mina or Lucy, the horror of what's happening is more indicated than visceral.  The scariest bit is probably, really, the dudes going into Lucy's crypt, with the first fifteen minutes in Dracula's castle a close second.  There's a lot of space in-between those scenes and after.
What's odd is that this is really considered the other Dracula film, the primary version still the 1931 Lugosi version or the Spanish version.  There have been innumerable versions before and since the 1992 version, but no one really seems interested in just telling the story in the book.  That said, this one is certainly closer than most.
With endless streaming services, it seems like *someone* would just give it a go.
By the way, I still think the guy who played the best Dracula in a movie in recent years was Nic Cage in Renfield.  I can only imagine if Coppola had cast his nephew for this what we could have had.

Rivals Series Playlist
Okay, so this will be the first ever post I’ll do on this app and I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry about it being about a Yuri on Ice fanfic from years ago that haven’t left me since the first time I read it.
Tumblr media
This is a list of songs you can listen to here that I thought fit Yuuri and Viktor’s feels in the Rivals series by @kazliin, which you can find here:
Until My Feet Bleed and My Heart Aches
Of Bright Stars and Burning Hearts
Rivals- Past, Present and Future
I’m not kidding when I say it’s absolutely life changing (I reread it every year so safe to say it’s my absolute favorite). I would like to list down every single lyric and the intricacies of how I arranged the songs in order but the sane part of my brain is refraining me from doing so. Let’s just say that I followed the progression of both POVs and matched that up with the lyrics of the songs.
It’s almost 4 hours of pure feels so buckle up, here we go.
1. You’re Still a Mystery- Bleachers
2. State of Grace- Taylor Swift
3. Into My Arms- COIN
4. See Through- The Band CAMINO
5. Untouchable- Taylor Swift
6. O Mio Babbino Caro- Giacomo Pucini
7. You Are In Love- Taylor Swift
8. gold rush- Taylor Swift
9. Belle- The Shock Band
10. I Can See You- Taylor Swift
11. Crashing- ILLENIUM, Bahari
12. Movement- Hozier
13. Sun and Moon- Claude-Michel Schönberg, Lea Salonga, Simon Bowman
14. On My Own- Lea Salonga
15. Say Don’t Go- Taylor Swift
16. Let The Light In- Lana Del Rey, Father John Misty
17. K.- Cigarettes After Sex
18. Say My Name Cover- Hozier
19. illicit affairs- Taylor Swift
20. Foolish One- Taylor Swift
21. Never Change- COIN
22. Felt This Way- Carly Rar Jepsen
23. So Close- Jon McLaughlin
24. Magkasuyo Buong Gabi- Agsunta
25. Dark Eyes- The Broln Czech Radio Orchestra
26. Wake Me- Bleachers
27. First Light- Hozier
28. First Time- Hozier
29. Break My Fall- Doc Robinson
30. Pretty Boy- The Neighbourhood
31. TALK ME DOWN- Troye Sivan
32. Fucked My Way Up To The Top- Lana Del Rey
33. The Louvre- Lorde
34. august- Taylor Swift
35. The Other- Lauv
36. Somewhere Only We Know- Keane
37. Fire Meet Gasoline- Sia
38. Don’t Let Me Go- Cigarettes After Sex
39. Francis Forever- Mitski
40. Like a River Runs- Bleachers
41. You Are In Love- Taylor Swift
42. Daylight- Taylor Swift
43. One And Only- Adele
44. Water Under the Bridge- Adele
45. The Last Time- Taylor Swift, Gary Lightbody
46. Bravado- Lorde
47. The Archer- Taylor Swift
48. Falling Slowly- Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová
49. The Night We Met- Lord Huron
50. Yuri on ICE- Taro Umebayashi
51. Long Live- Taylor Swift
52. Holy Ground- Taylor Swift
53. I Love You Always Forever- Donne Lewis
Forgive me for the abundance of Taylor Swift, she clearly read the Rivals series and made those songs for them specifically.
I tried my best to incorporate both POVs but I think it leaned too Viktor-centric. However, my fav Yuuri song on here is Bravado, it captured his anxiety during the Scandal so well and I resonate with that. It was hard to pick for Viktor but One And Only really stood out to me, it reads like his plea to Yuuri. BUT if I had to choose one song to explain their dynamic it’s Untouchable, applicable for both Yuuri and Viktor and just as heartbreaking.

Starting Guide:
Carrd / Interest Tracker / OC Master List
PSA TO NON ROLEPLAY BLOGS
Please do not reblog my posts. This is a roleplay blog and having my rp’s or headcanon posts spread around is really frustrating. It super messes up my activity and it’s really disheartening to see a notification and realize it’s not an ask or an rp reply. Those posts are not for you, and it’s stated in my rules that I block non-rp blogs on sight.
To-Do List:
Drafts ( 13 ) / Inbox ( 2 ) / Queue ( 2 )
Other Blogs:
Mike Total Drama
Rules + Muse List below The Cut!
1.) Fandoms
My blog is, as a rule, not affiliated with any of the fandoms that my muses come from, and are largely products of my own headcanons, I'll list on the muse page which muses are fully canon divergent and which ones follow canon, as it can vary depending on how I feel about the media they come from.
2.) Basic RP Etiquette
Don't control or override the actions of my characters, don't kill them without asking, no forcibly shipping with my character without talking to me first, really basic stuff for everyone's comfort, really.
3.) NSFW
I generally don't like NSFW unless we're very close rp partners, and if we do engage in that kind of shipping it will lead directly to fade to black, I don't have a sinblog, and don't have an interest in one, so any smut will have to be implied at best. Otherwise, darker subject matter like gore and other darker themes involving mental health will be explored and tagged appropriately.
4.) Dropping Threads
I'm guilty of dropping threads when I lose my muse for them and get overwhelmed. I'm working on reaching out more and sending memes to my mutuals, but I'm a very shy person. The best way to start things with me is to approach me in DM's or send me a meme.

So I mentioned last weekend I watched
Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Tumblr media
1992, Francis Ford Coppola.
I haven’t seen this movie in ages and ages and ages, and I’m so glad all the Dracula Daily buzz encouraged me to give it a rewatch, because I had so much fun watching this. This film won Oscars, and was directly responsible for establishing a new tone and style for cinematic vampires.
This is just the most fun, extravagant Dracula adaptation ever. I hear some people give it some shit sometimes because it doesn’t stick 100% faithfully to the events of the book - who cares that it doesn’t? There isn’t a single good adaptation that I’m aware of that does. I might get shit for this but I like the stuff it adds in, and beyond that, isn’t it pretty darned close?
My goodness the cast, they got just the most amazing people and stuck them in here, and everyone is clearly having so much fun (with one notable exception which I will get into later!) I’m so happy I have this movie where I get to see Richard E Grant mainline morphine, Tom Waits eating bugs, Anthony Hopkins playing the world’s most famous vampire hunter… *chef’s kiss*
The crazy costumes! What a beautiful movie! The fashion designer they got to make Dracula’s strange and audacious white hair! The Gustav Klimt robe! Lucy’s terrifying funerary dress! Everything Mina wears! The drapery! The vampire tiddies! Everything is so sumptuous and sensual! And I don’t mean sensual in terms of sexy times, though there’s certainly a lot of that, but I mean also like the shot that lingers on Mina’s hand trailing through the fur of the escaped wolf. How lovely.
Tumblr media
I think the last time I watched this movie I was in my very early twenties. Watching it now, I was absolutely delighted by the camera work, particularly all the superimposed shots. Every single ghostly overlay of eyes or every clever crossfade just made me smile so damned much. Even little things like the scene with Dracula’s shadow not quite matching. Apparently these shots were all achieved actually in-camera, with the only post-production effect added in being the blue flame. Hhhhhow did they even manage that? There are SO MANY superimposed shots??? In this age where post production is cheap and easy, I think it’s really important to understand and have respect for the astonishing practical effects of earlier films.
There’s just a couple things I don’t like, and I say this only in the way that you can nitpick the little things you would improve in a movie you otherwise love.
Tumblr media
I think the opening scene showing how Dracula got himself cursed to begin with is not necessarily a bad addition to the story… I just personally think it would be better somewhere else in the movie, and let the movie begin with us following Johnathan into this series of unfortunate events.
Speaking of Johnathan, as much as I think Keanu Reeves is probably the nicest human being in the world, I have to admit I’ve never been a huge fan of his acting, and in this movie especially I think he’s a bit miscast. He himself has said he wasn’t happy with his performance and that he had made himself exhausted by committing to too many movies at the time.
And I said everyone looks like they’re having so much fun… and they are… except for Winona Ryder. Apparently she and Gary Oldman did not get along, at all. Now obviously they’re both professionals, they’re both actors, I’m not making the creepy suggestion that romantic costars have to be legitimately attracted to each other or anything like that… it does put a little damper on my enjoyment of their scenes though knowing that they both probably couldn’t wait for the shot to end.
Fun facts
The VHS edition, which you might remember if you’re old like me, had no subtitles for the Romanian-language scenes, for some bizarre reason. Maybe it’s just because this is how I first got used to the movie, but I find I actually prefer it without the subtitles!
The 2007 special edition includes deleted scenes and making-of documentaries, which will be amazing to see - guess who just ordered a copy.
So folks, this is a fun movie for sure, and if you’re following along with Dracula Daily this is a perfect reason to give it a watch now. It’s the most exciting and beautiful Dracula adaption there is.

I'm not sure who is worse (or that the question matters), Ivan Ilyin, a Christian fascist extolling the virtues of autocratic rule [1], or Lev Gumilev (1912-1992), apparently another major influence on Putin and his elite circle.
Gumilev arrived at his core idea in the Gulag, where, without paper, he somehow (the story goes) contrived to write a book on the paper used to wrap food supplies. His theories represent a fantastic excursion into pseudoscience, which thrives in Russia even among serious scholars and scientists. In Gumilev’s view, an ethnic group, which he calls an “ethnos” (“ethnoi” in the plural), is not a social but a biological phenomenon, analogous to a herd or flock among animals. Developing according to biochemical laws, an ethnos constitutes “a biophysical reality…. Ethnic belonging, which manifests itself in the human consciousness, is not a product of…consciousness.”
As Morson goes onto describe, ethnoi are externally distinguished by behavioral characteristics unique to their biological identity. Cross "contamination" with other ethnoi, depending on the original similarity of the two ethnic groups, runs the risk of destroying the "host" ethnic group. (To probably no one's surprise, it turns out that Gumilev is a rabid anti-Semite.) As a recipe for an obscurantism that could at some point lead to armed conflict, Gumilev's ideas fit the bill.
Now enter Aleksandr Dugin. I've read conflicting accounts about Dugin's influence on political elites, but having no expertise in this area I'll just past the following to give a sense of the philosophical morass contributing to the ideology of Russian nationalism, as Morson and others have written about:
Dugin’s most influential book, The Foundations of Geopolitics, began as a lecture series at the General Staff Academy and continues to be assigned at military universities. As the historian John Dunlop observed, “There has probably not been another book published in Russia during the post-Communist period which has exerted a comparable influence on Russian military, police, and statist foreign policy elites.” And not just elites: Dugin’s ideas—cited, recycled, adapted, and plagiarized—fill bookstores and saturate mass media. In the late 1990s the Duma formed a geopolitics committee, and Dugin became an adviser to the Duma’s speaker, Gennady Seleznev. Dugin stresses Eurasianism’s apocalyptic element. Russians face a final battle of good and evil, a “cultural, philosophical, ontological, and eschatological struggle.” Evil is variously identified as Atlanticism (opposed to Eurasianism “in everything”), modernity (“an absolute evil”), America (“a country of absolute evil”), and above all liberalism, which he says is powerful today because evil is strongest at the end of days. Gumilev imagined he was doing science, but Dugin expresses animus toward “materialistic physics,” Francis Bacon, and “the supremacy of quantitative concepts and secular theories.” In his introduction to Eurasian Mission he also rejects “homogenous space,” “linear time,” and “progress.”
Is there some clue in the above as to why so many American conservatives are attracted to Putinism or Russian nationalism? Tucker Carlson is in Moscow to interview Putin.

Post Office scandal: Options considered speed up justice for victims

By Sam Francis
Political reporter, BBC News
Plans to fast-track appeals of hundreds of sub-postmasters affected by the Post Office IT scandal will be announced “very shortly”, a minister said.
Post Office minister Kevin Hollinrake told MPs it was investigating ways to overturn convictions, which could include possible legislation.
More than 700 people got criminal convictions because of faulty software but only 93 have had them overturned.
He indicated more information should be given by the end of the week.
Mr Hollinrake also suggested that Fujitsu – the technology company behind the software that caused the scandal – and anyone else found to be responsible should be “held accountable including making any payments” towards victims’ compensation.
On Monday, Mr Hollinrake met Justice Secretary Alex Chalk to discuss what he called “one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in our history”.
“We have devised some options for resolving the outstanding criminal convictions with much more pace,” the minister said.
But he added, Mr Chalk would “need to speak to senior figures in the judiciary about these options before we put them forward”.
He said the pair had discussed “at length” the possibility of changing the law in order to deal with those who are still waiting to clear their names.

Chris Mason: TV drama may help deliver change
Why were hundreds of Post Office workers prosecuted?
Sunak would back committee in Post Office honour probe
Between 1999 and 2015, the Post Office prosecuted 736 sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses – an average of one a week – based on information from a computer system called Horizon.
Many maintained their innocence and said they had repeatedly raised issues with Horizon.
But some went to prison for false accounting and theft. Many were financially ruined.
The scandal was the subject of an ITV drama broadcast last week that has catapulted it back into public consciousness.
The Metropolitan Police has said it is investigating the Post Office over possible fraud offences arising from the prosecutions.
The government is also looking at changing the rules around private prosecutions, after the Post Office pursued its former employees through the courts.
Campaigners called for the Post Office to be prevented from taking part in appeals against the convictions of former sub-postmasters.
Sir Keir Starmer has called for the Post Office to be stripped of its prosecution powers and for previous convictions looked at again.
“I think that the prosecution should be taken out of the hands of the Post Office and given to the Crown Prosecution Service,” he said.
“And these convictions, the remaining convictions, need to be looked at en masse.”
The government also announced retired judge Sir Gary Hickinbottom would chair an independent panel overseeing compensation payments to those whose convictions have been overturned.
ITV
Two former justice secretaries have called for legislation to be brought in as soon as possible.
Lord Falconer of Thoroton, the justice secretary under Tony Blair, said the government could introduce new laws “tomorrow and there would be no resistance in parliament”.
“It’s an absolutely shocking scandal that’s been there for years and years, and now it’s at the top of the political agenda.
“Everyone agrees it will take years to get rid of those other convictions unless there is a change in procedure.”
In a letter to The Times, Sir Robert Buckland, Mr Chalk’s predecessor, said: “Too many sub-postmasters have already died without seeing justice being done, so there is no more time to be lost.”
Speaking in the House of Commons, Sir Robert said he would support a new law to “create a presumption of innocence” for those convicted due to the faulty software.
However, former attorney general Dominic Grieve said new legislation would be a form of “parliamentary interference in the judicial process”.
“It’s a short cut, which may leave some people dissatisfied that they haven’t really been fully exonerated,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
Some have called for the Criminal Cases Review Commission – which investigates alleged miscarriages of justice – to look at the cases, a process that would take longer than introducing new legislation.
Prof Graham Zellick, former chair of the CCRC, said he believed the body would be able to deal with cases quickly, because of the “common feature” in them – that the prosecution case depended on evidence obtained from the computer system.
“Once you identify that the conviction is clearly, manifestly unsafe, and has to be quashed, and that’s why the court of appeal can deal with these cases very quickly,” he told the Today programme.
‘Keep the momentum ‘
Alan Bates, a former sub-postmaster who has led efforts for justice, told the BBC he believed a “resolution” was “closer”.
Mr Bates, played by Toby Jones in the ITV drama, said the years it had taken to get to this point had been “frustrating”, but added the ITV show had enabled a “broader audience” to understand what happened.
“The most important thing is for government to make sure that this financial redress goes through at speed to get it there as soon as possible, not wait, not spend money with lawyers time and time again,” he said.
“We still have to keep the pressure on and we have got to push people and we’ve got to get the whole thing moving and keep the momentum.
“The group has lost 60 or 70 people since we started all this. People need to get on with lives, they need to be able to draw a line under it – they will never forget it, but they have got to be able to get on and unfortunately they do need money to keep them going.
“This money is only what they are owed. This is money to put them back in a position what they would have been had Post Office not done what they did to them.”
Stripping titles
There has also been a campaign to strip former Post Office boss Paula Vennells of her CBE over the scandal.
Ms Vennells, who was Post Office chief executive between 2012 and 2019, has been urged to forfeit her honour.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s official spokesman said: “The prime minister shares the public’s feeling of outrage on this issue. He would strongly support the Forfeiture Committee if it chose to review the case.”
The Forfeiture Committee can recommend honours are stripped if a person has brought the system into disrepute.
Ms Vennells has said previously that she remained “truly sorry for the suffering caused to wrongly prosecuted sub-postmasters and their families”.
She also said she continued to fully support and focus on co-operating with the ongoing public inquiry into the scandal.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has also faced fresh scrutiny over his role as postal affairs minister during the coalition government.
His predecessor Sir Vince Cable, who was business secretary during that period, told BBC Radio 4’s World At One programme Sir Ed was being made a “scapegoat”.
