This is a new standard for vehicle diagnostics that allows communication between a tester and an electronic control unit (ECU) over Ethernet. This has many advantages over the traditional CAN bus, such as higher bandwidth, lower latency, better security and easier integration. In this post, I will explain the basic concepts of DoIP and how it works in practice.

DoIP is based on the ISO 13400 standard, which defines the format and content of diagnostic messages exchanged between the tester and the ECU. The tester is a device that can perform diagnostic functions on the vehicle, such as reading fault codes, performing tests or updating software. The ECU is a microcontroller that controls a specific function of the vehicle, such as engine management, braking system or infotainment.
