The Southern Railway

Here are a few shots on the Southern down near Duncan Tunnel (I believe). The Southern steam program of the time was really something, and 4501 was in the area on successive weekends.

Upon verification then, I believe we first see a set of engines pushing a train up the hill from New Albany, through the Duncan Tunnel. Nothing like the Southern Railway for using flags, running long hood forward, sporting high-short hoods, and a first-rate steam program.

Update: thanks to Jim Wrinn’s fine book on the subject, Steam’s Camelot, I can now say that the first images were probably Duncan Tunnel as I state here, but I now know the final image was taken in Huntingburg, Indiana.

Speaking of which, we must have been at that spot knowing 4501 was coming down the hill—which we see it bursting out of the tunnel soon enough. The final image was taken [in Huntingburg, Indiana] the next weekend when I snapped this picture prior to riding [to Evansville and return]. I believe the man in the green hat was the master mechanic in charge of the steam program for the Southern: Bill Purdie (who passed in 2010).

Southern Railway 2-8-2 No. 4505 -- sister to excursion star 4501 -- tramps up Saluda Grade in the pouring rain on Aug. 3, 1950. You can bet there's another engine shoving hard on the rear to get the train up the 4.7 percent grade.

And they are not happy, mostly because Opal’s in the scene.  She’s not a pleasant person to be around.  As if Opal’s resting bitch face couldn’t signal to you that she’s not all that pleasant.

Call this image “The Three Rich Engines” as a little tongue in cheek thing to Awdry’s The Three Engines...

What they all have in common is their very large bank accounts.

And as written in that one short story, Bessie has a crush on Scott, and Scott does have a little crush on Bessie.

But Opal’s in the area, so...they’re just really not happy.

This was a fun exercise to create original faces for some of these characters I’ve added to the expanded universe that Gordon and Dana belong to.  And since Dana comes from the US, we’re bound to see more American engines...especially the one Dana originally drove before she went to Sodor.  That being Bessie.

Southern 630 Rock Springs Georgia por Isaac Fulford Por Flickr: Southern 630 Rock Springs, Georgia. Leading the southbound excursion train is the Southern Railroad Consolidation 2-8-0 KS-1 number 630. This engine is amazingly still operating condition at the ripe old age of 112 years old! The engine ran local service around Knoxville, Tennessee, before running on the Murphy branch between Asheville and Murphy in North Carolina. In 1952 the engine was retired. It was purchased by the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad before returning to its Southern roots in the steam program ran by Bill Purdie, a railroad legend. After running the southern excursions until 1978 it was donated to its current home of the Tennessee Valley Railroad museum. It was retired in 1989. In the year 1999 the engine underwent a ten year restoration to like new condition. It then lead many 21st Century excursions on Southern successor's Norfolk Southern Railroad. After the program ended in 2015 the locomotive was again donated to the TVRM were it now hauls excursions on Saturdays with its Sister unit 4501 to Summerville, Georgia. What a sight to see this 112 year old engine hauling passenger excursions well into its second century of life!

Up Out of the Ohio Valley

Here is a shot of a westbound extra train (note the white flags) exiting the tunnel between New Albany and Georgetown, Indiana; it looks like the spot may be called Duncan. The steep grade out of the Ohio River valley often requires the use of helper engines here.

While it's not a great slide, if one looks closely, one may see that the train attached to the three helpers is a passenger special with steam engine number 4501 on the point.
