Declarations of War // Jim Smith
(for Bess, a mutt, hit by a car on the Don Valley Parkway the same moment I sat down to write)
I'm sorry I never told my old black dog much of anything.
We walked for literal years, both on what we knew was the sharp end of the leash, while I chanted "arnie this, and arnie that" real gems like "arnie and jim, jim and arnie."
I never told him why I stopped writing, or why I went to law school, or how I stopped drinking, or how I stopped smoking, or how I stopped breathing.
Never took him to Nicaragua, or back to my childhood, or up in my spaceship.
He was naked for sixteen years, then he died.
My favourite memory of Jo-Anne's memories of me is when she told me she'd seen me at 2 a.m. in the icy backyard picking him up and walking around, on legs that never worked again.
He kept whispering to me "jim and arnie, arnie and jim."
We bought him for thirty-seven dollars, which works out to just over two bucks a year, which is quite a bargain in the end.

Former city councillor and member of parliament Olivia Chow has been elected mayor of Toronto.
Chow was declared the winner of the mayoral byelection on Monday night after dominating in the polls.
The next city council meeting is scheduled for July 19. Here’s what Chow promised to do during the election campaign:
TRANSIT
Chow has promised to build a dedicated busway to replace the decommissioned Scarborough RT to the tune of about $60 million. She said the funding would come from replacing the Gardiner Expressway with an at-grade boulevard between Cherry Street and the Don Valley Parkway rather than rebuilding the roadway. [...]

Bloor Street is a major east–west residential and commercial thoroughfare in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Bloor Street runs from the Prince Edward Viaduct, which spans the Don River Valley, westward into Mississauga where it ends at Central Parkway. East of the viaduct, Danforth Avenue continues along the same right-of-way. The street, approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) long, contains a significant cross-sample of Toronto's ethnic communities. It is also home to Toronto's famous shopping street, the Mink Mile.
The players in the Rucker Tournament featured slam dunks, crossover dribbles, and bravado that excited the crowd, a playing style then foreign to the National Basketball Association (NBA).[5]

Watching a building from which a sniper fired on the Don Valley Parkway yesterday, a police officer crouches behind his car, a telescopic sight on his rifle. Ghost Bike Ride for Vlad Zotov
Monday, 15 April at 6:00 p.m.
59-year-old Vlad Zotov, a seasoned road cyclist, was out on a personal ride on Bayview Avenue, riding north, near the off-ramp for the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) and south of the Evergreen Brickworks. A 38-year-old male motorist, driving a large SUV, collided with Mr. Zotov and killed him. He was a ride leader with the Morning Glory Bicycle Club here in Toronto. He was a researcher with the Department of Defence and wrote several academic papers. He leaves behind a wife and three children. May his memory be a blessing to his family.
