This De Dion-Bouton & Trepardoux is one of the oldest surviving motorcars in the world. With its steam boiler located at the front and connecting rods to the rear wheels, it resembles a tank locomotive but is nevertheless one of the first usable, and therefore successful, applications of a steam engine in a small motorcar. The twin-cylinder compound engine installed under the floor could be operated by one man, eliminating the need for an additional stoker. The water tank was located underneath the seats and the coal bunker surrounded the boiler. The vehicle could get up steam within 50 minutes and could reach a top speed of approximately 60 km/h. The company De Dion, Bouton et Trépardoux was one of the first car manufac-turers. It was established in 1880 outside Paris by the brothers-in-law Georges Bouton and Charles Trépardoux, initially to make toy steam engines. Their sophisticated craftsmanship caught the attention of the count Albert de Dion, who proceeded to finance the production of steam-driven vehicles. In 1889, when De Dion attended the Paris Exhibition, he saw a petrol engine for the first time. He immediately recognised its potential and went on to develop one himself. Museum Louwman di Den Haag
Mengunjungi museum bisa menjadi salah satu alternatief rekreasi indoor yang dapat dipertimbangkan jika cuaca di luar sedang tidak bersahabat.
Di Den Haag tak jauh dari tempat tinggalku sebuah gedung megah yang bernama museum Louwman, menjadi pilihan wisataku kali ini. Selain alasan cuaca, sebenarnya aku penasaran karena sudah sering melintas di depan museum yang bangunannya cukup mencolok diantara hijaunya rerimbunan pohon di kawasan Wassenaar ini.
Pagar tanaman di sekeliling museum Louwman
Museum terletak di pinggir jalan propinsi antara Den Haag-Leiden, tepatnya di jalan Leidsetraatweg 57. Dari stasiun Den Haag anda hanya membutuhkan waktu 10 menit menggunakan bus nomer 90 ke arah Lisse atau bus Qliner nomer 386 ke arah Oestgeest lalu turun di halte Louwman museum. Untuk yang berkendaraan pribadi, disediakan tempat parkir bawah tanah dan dipungut biaya parkir sebesar 5 euro.
Gedung museum seluas 10.000 m2 yang baru diresmikan juli tahun 2010 ini memiliki dua atap berbentuk runcing memanjang ke belakang yang simetris di kedua sisi kanan dan kiri. Dindingnya berbata merah dipadu dengan bata abu-abu. Nama gedungnya, “Louwman Museum” terpatri indah di kedua sayap bangunan. Pagar tanaman hijau dan taman di sekeliling gedung seluas 7000 m2 ikut membuat karakter museum yang berada tak jauh dari kompleks istana ratu Beatrix ini menjadi lebih kuat.

Rute museum yang disarankan dimulai dari lantai dua. Namun begitu masuk ke dalam gedung langkahku tertahan melihat sederetan mobil yang dipamerkan di sebuah hall yang lebar.

Beberapa pengunjung tampak serius memotret mobil-mobil yang dipajang rapi di hall ini. Tingkah seorang meneer yang asyik mengabadikan sebuah mobil Volvo berwarna biru metalik dari beberapa arah membuatku geli. Kadang dia sampai harus sambil jongkok dan merebahkan badannya untuk mendapatkan hasil jepretan foto yang paling bagus. Manuver-manuver nya mengundang seorang petugas jaga untuk menghampirinya. Sepertinya hanya untuk mengingatkan kembali larangan menyentuh bodi setiap kendaraan yang dipamerkan di museum ini.
Hall yang ber-plafon tinggi melengkung bermotif kotak-kotak berwarna coklat terlihat serasi dengan lantai dasarnya yang mengkilap dan juga bermotif kotak. Indahnya rancang bangun karya arsitek Michael Graves ini sangat mempesona dan mengundang pengunjung untuk lebih jauh mengeksplor gedung museum sekaligus mengetahui koleksi mobil yang tersimpan di dalam museum ini.
Koleksi pribadi tertua di dunia
Kereta produksi Prancis dari abad 18
Sebuah kereta yang dibuat pada tahun 1750 menyambut kedatangan pengunjung di lantai dua. Suara derap gerobak yang ditarik oleh kuda terdengar nyaring di sepanjang ruangan. Beberapa kereta lainnya yang berasal dari abad 18 juga dipamerkan di ruangan yang cahayanya temaram dan berlorong sempit ini.
Akhir abad ke 19 mulai muncul penemuan-penemuan mobil sebagai pengganti kereta kuda yang menggunakan tenaga uap ataupun bensin sebagai bahan bakar untuk menghasilkan gerak.
De Dion-Bouton & Trepardoux steam Quadricycle
Salah satu koleksi mobil paling tua yang dipamerkan di lantai dua ini adalah De Dion-Bouton & Trepardoux steam Quadricycle, mobil bertenaga uap buatan Perancis yang dibuat pada tahun 1887.
Spyker HF 20
Koleksi mobil di museum Louwman kebanyakan didominasi oleh mobil klasik dan mobil balap. Salah satunya bermerk Spyker, merk mobil ternama di Belanda pada awal abad ke 20. Selain mobil, Spyker yang didirikan oleh Hendrik Jan Spijker juga memproduksi pesawat. Replika pesawat Farma HF-20, pesawat tempur milik angkatan udara Belanda yang diproduksi Spijker pada tahun 1913 tampak dipajang artistik menggantung di plafon museum lantai dua.
Secuil sejarah dua generasi keluarga Louwman
Salah satu koleksi penting di lantai dua adalah mobil Dodge Touring Car. Mobil ini merupakan koleksi pertama Piet Louwman yang dibeli pada tahun 1934 ketika mobil karya dua bersaudara Jhon dan Horace Dodge tersebut sudah berumur 20 tahun.

Awalnya pada tahun 1923 Piet Louwman dan Parqui mendirikan perusahaan otomotif yang diberi nama Louwman & Parqui. Setahun kemudian mereka mengimport mobil-mobil merk Dodges dan Chrysler dari Amerika.
“Jika Piet ditawari mobil unik yang menarik, dia akan membelinya dan menambahkan ke koleksi pribadinya. Setelah Piet meninggal, Evert Louwman melanjutkan bisnis ayahnya dengan mengimpor mobil-mobil merk Lexus, Toyota dan Suzuki serta menambah koleksi mobil-mobil antik juga klasik menjadi sekitar 250 seperti terlihat di museum ini. Butuh waktu 80 tahun sampai keluarga Louwman punya koleksi sebanyak ini “, ujar Henk salah seorang pekerja sosial museum yang kebetulan lewat dan ngobrol sebentar denganku di sela-sela kesibukannya bertugas. Henk sudah pensiun dan baru satu setengah tahun bekerja di museum ini.
Unik, satu mobil satu cerita
Museum-museum mobil di negara lain seperti museum BMW di Mϋnchen dan museum Fiat di Turin hanya memiliki koleksi satu kendaraan tertentu. Hal inilah yang membuat museum Louwman sangat unik. Di museum ini ada sekitar 100 merk mobil dari sembilan belas negara di seluruh dunia. Tak hanya mobil-mobil dari Amerika, Inggris, Jerman, Italia, tapi juga dari Jepang dan India.
Hampir setiap mobil yang dipajang mempunyai informasi yang lengkap. Apalagi pihak museum juga menyediakan fasilitas gratis audiotour yang websitenya tinggal diunduh di smartphone anda. Terkadang pengunjung harus berhenti sejenak di depan setiap mobil yang dipajang untuk menyimak memorabilia unik yang dimiliki mobil tersebut.
Mobil angsa
Penampakan sebuah mobil angsa yang dibuat pada tahun 1910 di India oleh Robert Nicholl Matheson mendapat banyak perhatian pengunjung. Ceritanya Matheson yang berasal dari Skotlandia ini ingin membuat kejutan dengan kreasi mobilnya uuntuk kalangan elit setempat di Calcutta. Namun sayang ketika diuji coba, mobil tersebut menyebabkan kepanikan luar biasa di jalan-jalan yang menyebabkan polisi harus turun tangan. Setelah itu Matheson pun lalu menjual mobil angsanya kepada maharaja Nabha.
Lalu cerita dibalik sebuah mobil trabant, merk mobil yang diproduksi di Zwickau, Jerman Timur pada tahun 1958. Di dunia barat mobil ini menjadi ternama pada masa runtuhnya Republik Demokratik Jerman ketika banyak warganya mengungsi ke Jerman Barat, yaitu pada tahun 1989. Trabant adalah mobil yang sangat sederhana dengan mesin dua-tak dan bertenaga 15 hp. Trabant juga tidak terlalu berat, dengan model yang lebih baru dan bertenaga 26 hp, mobil ini masih mampu melaju dengan kecepatan maximal 105 km/jam. Kata trabant diambil dari bahasa Latin dan artinya adalah “teman perjalanan”atau “satelit”. Nama ini terilhami oleh satelit Uni Soviet yaitu Sputnik. Seringkali trabant disingkat menjadi trabi atau trabbi. Dewasa ini mobil trabant merupakan mobil cult yang digemari oleh beberapa persatuan penggemar.

Koleksi mobil lainnya yang menyedot banyak perhatian pengunjung antara lain adalah mobil Cadillac Fleetwood nya Elvis Presley, mobil Humber Pullman milik perdana menteri Inggris Winston Churchill, mobil Lincoln V12 dan Desoto Taxi yang digunakan dalam film “The Godfather”. Sayang sekali aku tidak bisa melihat mobil Aston Martin DB5 James Bond, mobil yang dipakai agen rahasia James Bond (Sean Connery) dalam filmnya “Goldfinger”, karena sedang dipinjam oleh sebuah instansi untuk dipamerkan di Belgia.

Selain koleksi mobil-mobil klasik, balap dan moderen, di lantai satu museum Louwman memanjakan mata pengunjungnya dengan koleksi benda seni lainnya seperti banner dan lukisan tentang otomotif serta beragam koleksi yang berkaitan dengan otomotif seperti peralatan makan yang dipakai ketika berlibur, korek api yang biasanya dipakai oleh perokok serta miniatur mobil terbuat dari logam dan keramik. Kemudian deretan pompa bensin antik warna-warni yang tertata rapi juga dapat ditemui di sepanjang dinding lantai dasar museum.
Restoran “House of Lords”
Tak terasa sudah hampir tiga jam aku menghabiskan waktu mengintip koleksi mobil-mobil unik di museum ini, ketika tahu-tahu aku sudah berada di lantai dasar kembali. Rute museum di lantai dasar berakhir di sebuah ruangan yang mengambil setting gedung-gedung pertokoan dan salah satu restoran terkenal di Den Haag pada tahun 1920 an. Interiornya yang terlihat asri dan jadul banget membuat pengunjung betah berlama-lama berada di ruangan ini untuk berfoto atau sekedar duduk-duduk di teras restoran yang bernama “House of Lords”. Konon bagian luar restoran ini menggunakan fasad yang masih orisinil bekas restoran terkenal di Den Haag yang bernama “The House of Lords”yang telah digusur pada tahun 1980.

Seperti juga pengunjung yang lain, akupun juga terbius untuk menikmati suasana di sekitar ruangan House of Lords ini. Dengan efek pencahayaan yang dibikin minimalis, dan latar belakang pertokoan kuno di sekitarnya nampaknya Michael Graves berhasil mengajak pengunjung merasakan betul suasana tempo dulu di ruangan ini. Sambil duduk menunggu teh daun mint dan apel taart pesananku, aku hanya membatin nggak rugi rasanya sudah merogoh uang 14 euro untuk membayar tiket masuk ke museum Louwman ini.
