⚔️ 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺! Hammer of the Ram
Weapon (maul), rare (requires attunement) ___ This all-silver hammer carries a mighty force behind it with every swing. You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. If the hammer hits an object that isn’t being worn or carried, the hit is a critical hit. The hammer has 3 charges and regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. When you hit a target with the hammer, you can expend 1 to 3 of its charges to force the target to make a DC 15 Strength saving throw. For each charge expended, the target takes an extra 1d10 force damage and is pushed 5 feet away from you on a failed save. On a successful save, the target takes half as much force damage and isn’t pushed. 𝙍𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙖𝙢. If you’re also attuned to the “ring of the ram,” your bonus to attack and damage rolls with the hammer increases to +2, and the hammer’s every swing creates a projection of the spectral ram from the ring. The ram lurches forward from the head of the hammer, effectively increasing your reach with the weapon by an additional 5 feet. John Blanche is an absolute legend. As an artist and art director, he essentially steered the rudder of Warhammer and, through it, British fantasy art, for decades. Among a pile of important work, my favorite is probably his illustrations for the four-volume Sorcery! gamebook series by Steve Jackson.

I’m not sure how the Hollow Press edition of Voodoo Forest (2022) got on my radar, but it did (and thank goodness, because through it I found Vermis). The first version appeared in 2015 and was the product of a decade of work. This edition includes additional plates and was resequenced. The back matter says it’s the project’s definitive form.

It’s impressive! There are 46 full-page illustrations, each accompanied by a second, smaller one, and one 2-page spread. In a lot of ways, Blanche’s style seems unchanged, which is a curious thing for an artist with a career spanning multiple decades (compare to Ian Miller, who has had a number of stylistic periods). It’s strange to see his work without any direct references to the worlds of Warhammer. There are subtle, perhaps reflexive visual references, like the way the demon woman’s claw hands resemble the canon Slaaneshi demonette, or how all the secondary illustrations depict a variety of folk carrying banners. Those banners serve as cryptic titles. Many are quotes from Macbeth. I assume many others reference other works, but I haven’t quite figured them out. The doomed atmosphere of the Scottish play sort of overrides all other associations for me (though there is very little in the visuals that would make me think of Shakespeare, though there is one man in a kilt).

Taken as a whole, the thing is unsettling, a sort of dream or nightmare landscape that clearly conforms to some organizing principal, but the logic of which remains obscure. There is not much gore or violence, but violence seems imminent in nearly all the plates. I would not want to explore this particular forest, but I am glad to have it on my shelf.

I know we don't have official Ankarna art yet, BUT. This is my take ✨️

Heavily inspired by Rani of Jhansi, I just really love the idea and inclusivity of the Indian culture mixing into a fantasy world. Like Bollywood vibes for a dancer bard??? It would be incredible.

Whatever Ankarna ends up looking like and being, will be deeply dope. But this is absolutely a Fan Thought™️ I like a lot!

I was inspired by @ask-dcf (our DM), who has a lot of Frisk and Charas in D&D, to turn my little wizard into a D&D wizard! ( •̀ ω •́ )✧

Idea

The assassin walked calmly from the council chambers, leaving panic in her wake. Three dozen scribes, notaries, lobbyists and associated nobles who all couldn't decide whether they should run to the throne and help, or run away and save themselves. Sitting on the throne, where King Jasper Moliath had been a minute ago, was a small leather bag. It had been plain and unassuming, but was now... the scariest thing in the room.

If you have a Bag of Devouring and a good Sleight of Hand bonus, take something from your target and drop it in the bag! You can make it look like they caught you trying to steal, and when they go "aha!" and reach for their favorite ring, the bag Gets Them.
