Crypto Whales Scoop Up Bargain Bitcoin as Prices Slide: Data Shows

Crypto whales, entities with large holdings of bitcoin, are taking advantage of the recent drop in prices to buy more of the leading cryptocurrency. Since the debut of U.S. spot ETFs on January 11, bitcoin's price has fallen by nearly 19% to $39,770. Bitfinex, one of the top 10 exchanges, has seen whales making significant purchases, causing bitcoin to trade at a premium compared to other exchanges. According to market data, the premium on Bitfinex was around $70, higher than Coinbase and Binance.

One trader on Bitfinex has been using the TWAP (Trade-Weighted Average Price) strategy to buy large amounts of bitcoin consistently over the past three days. This strategy helps minimize slippage, which is the difference between the requested price of a trade and the actual executed price. It is estimated that approximately $50 million worth of spot bitcoin has been accumulated so far through this TWAP buying. As bitcoin prices continue to decline, sales from the FTX bankruptcy estate and outflows from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) have further pushed prices below $39,000 for the first time since early December.

The number of bullish leveraged bets on bitcoin has also increased by almost 8% in just one week, with over 73,000 contracts open. This indicates that traders are optimistic about bitcoin's future and are taking advantage of the lower prices to accumulate more bitcoin.
