Northern Flicker ( Red Shafted ) by Kip Hutchison
Via Flickr:
Click image 2 times to view larger. The red-shafted and yellow-shafted forms of the Northern Flicker formerly were considered different species. The two forms hybridize extensively in a wide zone from Alaska to the panhandle of Texas. A hybrid often has some traits from each of the two forms and some traits that are intermediate between them. The Red-shafted Flicker also hybridizes with the Gilded Flicker, but less frequently.

Northern Flicker by Peter Brannon
Via Flickr:
Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) - Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia I have not had that many opportunities to see northern flickers at close range, so I was quite surprised when this one landed on a tree a few feet away from me. Such a treat to view their wonderful markings up close. I always felt this should be Flickr's official bird for obvious reasons :) Thanks for visiting!
