Motives make Heroes and Villains alike
We hear a lot of things about good intentions paving the way to hell and ruin. And having good intentions seems to be an opt-out excuse for terrible things being done.
But if one was too look at the fundamental parts of somebody's actions stripping away the motives and intentions, we get a very interesting reaction.
Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen (book & TV Adaptation): Let's do a quick run down of some of Daenerys's actions. She stands by and watches her brother get murdered by a boiling pot of gold, she locks away two people to starve in a dungeon while robbing one of the victim's house, she sacks Astapor and Meereen killing thousands, she crucifies 163 men, she burns the Khals, refuses to aid somebody in a war that could ravage the land she hopes to rule and burns an entire army to ash including executing two lords for being loyal to an enemy. Now, before I get hate over being Anti-Dany, let's have look at her motives for doing this. Dany begins to story as an orphaned young princess who belongs to an overthrown dynasty, who is married off at a young age, raped by an older man, abused by a brother and impregnated at fourteen. She looses her husband and miscarries her unborn son and loses the little power she has. Since she is the last (not counting any Aegons, fake or snow) hope of a dynasty, she feels the responsibility to take back her father's kingdom and heal the wounds sewn by war. On the way home, (the wrong fucking way) Dany liberates three slave cities and kills the 163 men she believes responsible for the murder of the same amount of children they crucified. She kills the Khals responsible for the death of her bloodrider. Though burning an army and two lords cannot really be excused, her refusal to help Jon in his war is justified as she doesn't really trust him. She does the right thing when she finds out that he's right.
Carrie: Carrie turns her highschool prom into slaughterhouse, murdering dozens of her classmates, citizens of her home town and her own mother. Her motives are simple, after years of abuse Carrie just want the pain to stop. She was the butt of one final and fatal joke, which she decided to take revenge. She kills her mother for years of abuse mostly physical, mental and emotional due to her extreme religious views.
Clarke Griffin (TV Series): Same forn as before- actions before explanation. Clarke releases toxic, radiation riddled air into a complex of refugees that kills them all violently painfully and slowly. Well that seems a little evil, doesn't it? Now, a little background. Clarke was born in space which made her radiation-immune. She is cast down to earth where she and the other castdowns are taken in by a group of people who were not brought to space when the earth went to shit. They live in a sheltered compound, Mountweather. These people were not immune to the radiation in the air so if they go outside, they will die. To heal themselves from injuries gotten from excursions to the outside, MountWeather drains the Grounders for their blood which its immune to radiation. MountWeather figures out the the blood of Clarke and the others could cure them but the process would kill them. Clarke lets the air in to save to herself, her friends and the hundreds of Grounders inside the Mountain.
Jamie Fraser (Book & TV as far as Season 4x12 and Drums of Autumn): The Highlander has stolen cattle in raids, held an English woman hostage and threaten to rape her before a sixteen year old soldier, murdered his uncle, beat his wife, committed bigamy, adultery fathering a child and beat-up his daughter's boy friend. Most of this can be justified through his motives. Stealing cattle is a Celtic tradition and a step that made him a man, the woman held hostage was his wife who went along with the charade, his uncle was going to tell Prince Charles that Jamie was a traitor, his beat his wife due to not knowing it was wrong to which he made a solemn oath to never do it again, he married another because he thought his wife was dead, only fathered a bastard due to being blackmailed into sleeping with a bratty noble girl and beat-up the wrong man for his daughter's rape due to a misidentification. His actions overall, being a traitor to the English, is justified because FUCK THE KING, FUCK COLONISATION AND THE STUPID WAR IN THE FIRST PLACE and fuck Black Jack Randall and Charles Stuart particularly.
Tyrion Lannister (Book): Tyrion is our favorite, hands down. But some of the shit he does is fucked up. He arms savage clansmen with good steel making it possible for them to murder innocents, he sends a man into exile for being loyal, he allows the brutal execution of a group of men loyal to another king, he threatens to rape and beat his eight year old nephew, he strangles the woman he loves and murders his father. Tyrion's motives for these is first revenge for being wrongfully imprisoned and to repay a kindness, he exiles Slynt for being untrustworthy and loyal to his evil sis, he put the men to death to save the city and his family, he makes an idle threat to stop the rape and torture of an innocent woman, he detonated the wildfire to save his family, strangles his lover for betraying him (not just cause but he was under some stress and grief) and kills his father for all the mental and emotional abuse he doled out, for trying to have him executed and for making him watch the gang-rape of his wife and making him participate.
Clyde Shelton: He has dismembered a man forcing him to watch as he does so, records it and sends the tape to the family of a lawyer, he blows up a car killing an innocent woman, poisons a man with an excruciatingly slow and painful poison, kills a judge via exploding gun and violently murders a man in prison. His motives are clear, good old-fashioned vengeance. He dismembers the man and poisons the other for the rape and murder of his wife and daughter. The tape was sent to the lawyer to show him the brutal consequences of the law system failing. The woman is killed accidentally in an explosion meant for another and the judge is killed for failing to convict a very obviously guilty man.
The I Spit On Your Grave franchise: These women disembowel, slaughter, torture and murder men so violently this film was banned for it's goriness. Their motives? Avenging their brutal rapes and torture at the hands of the men.
We can create a villain by giving a lack of motive for evil acts or to have them have terrible motives.
By creating heroes who do terrible deeds but by backing them with sound motives, we as writers can create an interesting character or storyline to tell.
