We're truly sorry to hear about the passing of Christopher Priest. He has been part of Gollancz for many years, and each novel was something new, different and boundary defying. Bethan was with him at Cymera festival last year when he made a rousing speech about science fiction as a battle cry, and a way to change the world for the better. He will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.

Who writes a better Metallo, PKJ or Priest?
Right now I have to give it to PKJ simply because he cracked Metallo’s basic concept for me, and had more issues featuring Metallo, but Priest definitely *gets* Metallo.
I talked before about how I would structure Metallo’s arc, and for the first Act I wanted to see Metallo used as a WMD by the military. Priest deploys him for that exact purpose here and it’s both awesome and terrifying. He’s like Dr. Manhattan in Vietnam, towering over everyone, he goes in and wipes out a Chinese naval battle group like it’s nothing. And the resentment he expresses towards Clark over how Metallo’s lost everything while Clark still has his loved ones even after experiencing his own traumatic event? Extremely into that fueling the vendetta between the two. Even better that Superman can’t help sympathizing with him and wanting to reach out to Corben despite the low odds of Metallo turning a new leaf.
Makes me sad that we didn’t get more of Priest exploring the other Rogues, he has good takes on two of them in Lex and Metallo thus far! Need DC to give him more Superman work in the future.
