The 1865 - Don't Tread On We!
With their upcoming LP Don’t Tread On We!, out via Mass Appeal Records on January 25th 2019, New York-based blues-punk outfit The 1865 are cooking up a full meal that will tantalize your earbuds. Recently teased, “Buckshot” takes inspiration from 1865 America, post the Emancipation. Each song from the LP features different explorations of life in 1865 America, a land living in the shadows of the fallen Confederacy. With a departure from Mass Appeal’s typical hip-hop sound,The 1865 describe themselves as “Bad Brains meets Foo Fighters in a black woman’s hair salon for a cup of tea.” Formed in 2017 by musician/filmmaker Sacha Jenkins (The White Mandingos, The Wilding Incident), The 1865 came to life when joined by famed session musician Pro-skateboarder Chuck Treece on drums and the Queen of Shoegaze Carolyn “Honeychild” Coleman (Apollo Heights, Badawi) on lead vocals/baritone guitar duties. The band later added Afro-Brazilian bassist Flora Lucini (Maafa), and drummer Jason “Biz” Lucas (Dragonz of Zynth) to the mix. The result is The 1865, a band whose lyrics are just as impactful as their undeniable sound and what Jenkins says “was a great way to create contemporary music that spoke to the past, but also spoke to the same things that continue to happen over and over again in our country.” Stay Awake! Watch out for the double snakes!

Honeychild Coleman - Leigh and Me (It’s Always You)
I met her on the train when I was 19, and we had a brief but intense friendship. She was not a musician. She was a fashion student at FIT, and I was an acting student. She made me a sweater. We really connected. Then we lost touch.
Twenty years later, I ran into her at [Lower East Side club] Piano’s. She was Carolyn when I knew her before, and now she was Honeychild, this rock star making this great music. I love how she plays guitar, I love the tone she gets. It’s almost a Ronettes type of vibe crossed with the Breeders and Liz Phair.

The 1865 Emerge With Debut Single Buckshot
Tumblr media
The 1865 is a new blues-punk band formed in 2017 by veteran journalist Sacha Jenkins who was one-half of The White Mandingos with Murs. Professional skateboarder and musician Chuck Treece, Shoegaze singer Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman, bassist Flora Luccini and  Jason "Biz" Lucas drummer for Dragonz Of Zynth joined Jenkins to complete The 1865. The band's name is an obvious ode to the year the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery was instituted and the Reconstruction era after the Civil War. Their upcoming album, Don't Tread On Me, which is a reference to the 1775 flag named after General Christopher Gadsen, has songs that talk about life in America during 1865. "Buckshot" is the first single from Don't Tread On Me and it is about the perspective of an escaped slave. Jenkins explained in a press release that The 1865 “Was a great way to create contemporary music that spoke to the past, but also spoke to the same things that continue to happen over and over again in our country.” Don't Tread On Me can be picked up after January 25th.

The 1865 Release Video For Buckshot From Don't Tread On Me Album Out Today
youtube
The 1865 crew (Sacha Jenkins, Chuck Treece, Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman, Flora Lucini and Jason "Biz" Lucas) drop the video for "Buckshot" from their inaugural Don't Tread On Me. The band describes itself as "Bad Brains meets Foo Fighters in a Black woman's hair salon for a cup of tea." Their name automatically opens up a conversation about the year 1865 in America and the creation of the 13th Amendment which officially slavery. In the video for "Buckshot," several clips from slaves picking cotton to Donald Trump speaking to the public are put together to form the question of how far did America evolve in regards to obliterating racism? A snippet of O.J.Simpson's famous Hertz commercial from 1978 running through an airport is juxtaposed against slaves planning on doing the same thing on their plantation. Don't Tread On Me is available now.
