DotS Character Facts— Twyla
Tumblr media
Twyla, the protagonist of Dreams of the Stars, and quite the enigma!
She's a spirited young girl with a soft voice, but plenty of sass underneath her usually calm demeanor. She's introverted and a bit shy at first, but she does her best to be friendly towards others. The girl's got absolute audacity and has no qualms questioning adults and their logic. She herself thinks critically, and lacks a filter for her thoughts most of the time.
At first, Twyla's really adverse to making new friends due to a sad experience with her previous caretaker and knight-master, Poppeh, but in recent times has begun warming up to it again. Most notably thanks to Fintan Blon'dee, who's now her best friend. He's essentially her extrovert pal, and was absolutely adopted by him. He's just a year older than her at 12!
Twyla's incredibly loyal to those who earn her trust, and will go to great means to ensure their safety, despite being an 11-year-old Puff child.
There's not much known about her past, but what is certain are some intriguing details:
Twyla has a striking resemblance to a certain someone from Meta Knight's past. This has caused him to re-spark an old obsession, going back to searching high and low for answers regarding that person's fate.
She has strange abilities for a Dream Puffball, able to manipulate her own Ability in unusual ways. Nevertheless a strange marking on her right paw which appears to be key for a certain power of hers: something Meta Knight coined as "Rebound", due to its similar nature to Copy. One would first think it's strange that Meta Knight knows so much about Rebound, but then again, he's the guy who knows everything anyhow, so it's really no surprise.
Her acid green eyes are terrifying to see in the dark, especially since she's at the age where they glow pretty brightly at night.
Twyla was raised on stories of the Star Warriors, and so is quite a fan of a few. However Poppeh was bad at remembering most names, so he had his own titles for these intrepid heroes. This has left Twyla to discover her greatest heroes through their histories rather than their names.
Twyla has a 'pet' ethereal butterfly, which has been her companion since she was an infant. She calls it by the name "Pops", among other nicknames.
Her starship, when in good condition, is devastatingly fast and nimble. It's designed to cloak itself entirely, and is chock full of tricks and traps for possible assailants. The ship's objective has always been to protect its pilot, so this made rescuing Twyla next to impossible due to its evasive protocols. However, there was one person who almost captured the ship many, many years ago...
Twyla was never taught how to swim. However, she's buoyant, and floats like a confused little birdie. Now that she's under the care of Rovy, Alphonse, and their pal Pepper, she might get the chance to learn!
She's still learning a lot about her own people, and is very excited to meet new Puffs! During her travels, she had never met one of her kind due to their scarcity. However, on Popstar, they've amassed in abundance! She's become fast friends with Kirby especially, alongside some other oddball Lost Stars (orphan Puffs) under Lillian's care.
Twyla's fur is very soft like kitten fur, but she's also is kinda touchy about being hugged or held by people she doesn't know.
Despite having trust issues, she's still learning about stranger danger, and lacks the social skills to tell a good person from bad due to her own lack of socialization in her earlier years.
Her ship's cockpit is loaded with merch for all kinds of Star Warriors, most importantly Captain Zeelo Zeidric. Safe to say she's a HUGE fan of Captain Zeidric!
There is more to discover about this little Puff in Dreams of the Stars... and whom she once belonged to.

A Great Deal More Than He'd Expected
Dario reads Santi's journal and makes the shocking discovery that Santi and Wolfe might not be 100% heterosexual.
The fact that Dario has canonically read Santi's journal is very funny to me and I had no choice but to expand on it, really, especially considering the also-canon fact that "every page [of Santi's journal] is full of Christopher." (smoke and iron).
Content warning for cursing and a pretty major invasion of privacy.
@tiergan-andrin-alenefar @fintan-pyren for your enjoyment
AO3
Was this a bad idea? Yes. Would Khalila be disappointed in him? Most definitely. Did knowing this convince Dario to stop himself from grabbing Captain Santi's journal and opening it to the most recent entry? Absolutely not. He only hoped this would end up worth the risk, because if he was caught, Santi would probably kill him. The thought scared him less than it should, he noted as he began reading.
Christopher is a bastard and I despise him.
He is reading over my shoulder and making no effort to not laugh. No matter how much I love him, I did not appreciate being handcuffed and chased around by a postulant, and I am trying to be annoyed about this, but he's laughing and he has a very nice laugh. Insufferably attractive partners aside, forcing me to participate in that training exercise was incredibly rude and my lover should be ashamed of himself.
My lover has informed me that he is not, in fact, ashamed of himself.
Fuck off, amore mio.
Who would Christopher be? It was a rather common name, but... Wolfe had mentioned once or twice that it was his first name, and the more Dario thought about it, the more it made sense. He'd noticed Santi always watching Wolfe and nearly smiling during his extensive lectures, on the rare occasion when Dario's eyes wandered away from Khalila. And Wolfe tended to regard Santi with... not affection, but as close as he thought Wolfe was capable of. The sort of comfortable familiarity one might have with a good friend.
Or, if that journal entry was any indication, something a bit different than "good friends."
Dario filed that information in the back of his mind and flipped to an earlier page.
Chris's students are annoying- "Rude," Dario muttered, though he couldn't argue- and I do not like them any more than he does. After spending a day around those children, I can confidently say that Christopher and I made the right decision in not having kids of our own. Neither of us have the patience for it.
I am especially not a fan of Danton, considering the Burners in his family. His intentions could be innocent, but they could also be malicious, and based on the events of the past few years, I'm inclined to assume the worst. Santiago is also annoying. Assumes he already knows everything Chris is saying, so diverts his attention to Postulant Seif. Which was also rather rude, but not false. In fairness, I spent most of the lesson looking at Chris, but I'm not meant to be learning from the lecture. I've heard it all already, anyway. I have the misfortune to hear the first drafts of the lectures. (I'm lying when I say misfortune. I quite enjoy hearing Chris go on a tangent about something he's passionate about.) I don't mind Postulant Wathen. From what I can tell, she seems to dislike everyone around her, so she has that in common with me.
I certainly hope I was not this obnoxious when I was a postulant. And I am entirely sure that Chris was this obnoxious when he was a postulant.
Chris would like me to know that, no matter how much of an arrogant ass he was in his youth, he was not as bad as Santiago. He's probably right.
Damn. He'd just been looking for blackmail material, not planning to get insulted by his teacher's lover. To be fair, Santi had every right to dislike him, especially now that he was invading the captain's privacy. Santi may have trusted Wolfe enough to let him read his personal journal, but as his apparent least favorite student, Dario most definitely did not get that same privilege. Knowing full well how much of a creep he was being, he flipped another page.
I hope the situation in Oxford doesn't get much worse. The High Commander is considering sending my company if it escalates, and I really would prefer that not happen. After what happened last time I was sent abroad and left Christopher alone here...
The words after that were crossed out, so thoroughly Dario couldn't make out any words, let alone enough to understand the gist of it. Unfortunate. Whatever happened in that 'last time,' it seemed important, and Dario would've liked to know. Even after further examination, the scribbles offered nothing useful, so he sighed and continued turning the pages.
I'm not sure it's wise for Christopher's lesson plan to allow the postulants to share their opinions on the Library's major laws, and say whether they disagree. Students should be allowed to form their own opinions on it, but with the Artifex Magnus watching Christopher as closely as he is, even suggesting that postulants are allowed to question the Library could incriminate him. That's not a risk I'm willing to take.
The Artifex Magnus was watching Wolfe. "Interesting," Dario muttered. This, he could use. He continued, hoping Santi might specify why Wolfe was being watched.
I know these children will have a better education if Chris teaches them to think critically about the Library, so I should be willing to risk my partner's safety for their educations. Tota est scientia, right? Nothing should be worth more to me than knowledge. But Christopher is worth more to me than anything.
Which is potentially heresy, but I'm strangely all right with that.
Maybe Chris is right and I'm just being paranoid about this. I hope to his gods and mine that he's right, as he tends to be, and he stays safe. I love him, more than anything, and I refuse to lose him. Not again.
Unlike the other words that had been crossed out, the "not again" at the end was still readable, and it left Dario with his jaw hanging slightly open. For a moment, he'd forgotten this was Scholar Wolfe and his lover he was reading about, and not one of the romance books he secretly enjoyed. Somehow, he'd found himself emotionally invested in the love life of his teacher, which was decidedly not what his intention had been upon arriving.
His goal had been blackmail, dammit.
At least he may have found something. Wolfe was being watched by the Artifex Magnus, and Santi was apparently not opposed heresy. Potentially useful, but not nearly as useful as he'd hoped. Dario sighed and closed the journal, leaving it in the exact position he'd found it. He hoped very much that the captain never found out about this.

I will only accept the Keeper movie if Fintan wears eyeliner in it.
It can be subtle like Lee Pace in the Hobbit. It can be dramatic winged eyeliner. It can be full smudged raccoon eyeshadow like Sebastian Stan in Captain America.
But no version of Fintan is complete without some kind of eyeliner.

Some Swapfell headcanons
- Akira (SF! Alphys) and Mal are sort of good friends? Akira is both worried and mad at Mal being the Captain of the Royal Guard
- Mal has a fear of geese and of the dark and Rus has a fear of heights
- Mal challenged Regina (SF! Toriel) for the title of the Royal Guard despite his low HP. Mal barely survived and got his scar from that fight.
- Out of all the Sanses, Mal has the highest HP (10 HP)
- Rus accompanies Cary (SF! Chara) on their journey. Despite being a nervous wreck and not knowing how to take care of kids, he becomes one of Cary’s best friends. He’s not exactly a dunkle figure to Cary, but more of an older brother figure to them
- Fintan (SF! Asgore) gives Cary a disguise to blend into the underground. He has been disguising all of the fallen humans to make them survive long enough
- Rus got his scar from protecting Mal from other monsters attacking him. It was also the first time Mal dusted some monsters after Rus got hurt. This was one of the reasons why Mal’s protective of Rus and why Rus is usually around him most of the time
- Yes, Mal may or may not have also followed Rus and Cary when Rus decided to help Cary out. Rus just wanted to be helpful and learn to be independent from Mal
- Mal is really good with money?
- Akira and Nami (SF! Undyne) are exes
- Mal is also a great flirt, but he still also has his awkward moments while flirting with someone
- Rus likes lollipops and sour candy. His favorite flavors are grape and orange
- Rus will eat anything. He’s also the kind of guy who will have cold pizza as breakfast and cereal as dinner
- Mal got the idea of getting hype music for himself when he makes entrances from N (SF! Napstablook)

At two o’clock on the morning of 11 September 2008, twelve miles west of the island of Belle-Ile in the Bay of Biscay, the bilge alarm sounded on the Irish national yacht, the Asgard II. The brigantine was the successor to and namesake of the original Asgard, on which, in 1916, the nationalist revolutionary Erskine Childers and his wife Mary ran a consignment of German guns into Howth harbour and delivered them to the Irish Volunteers. The original ship was enshrined in nationalist mythology and eventually preserved in the national museum. The Asgard II, the state’s official wal training vessel, inherited some of its aura as a symbol of the nation. Its masthead was an image of the sixteenth-century ‘pirate queen’ Granuaile, who had defied Elizabethan encroachment on her West of Ireland coastal fastness.
The sound of the alarm that morning meant that the Asgard II was taking in water. The captain gave the order to abandon ship, the crew was evacuated, and the Asgard, her decks awash, sank sadly to the bottom of the bay. There was some hope she might be raised, but in February 2009 the government decided that there was not much hope of salvage. Nor was there much prospect of building a new boat to symbolize the nation. The government was so broke that it quietly pocketed the €3.8 million in insurance money and left the Asgard to its watery fate.
There was something almost too neat about the symbolism. A fortnight later, the Irish banking system, awash with waves of bad debt owed by property developers, collapsed. The great Irish economic miracle of the 1990s and early twenty-first century was over and the global Cinderella was returning to rags and ashes. The Asgard had never functioned quite so eloquently as an image of Ireland.

The Best Beginner Tunes for Irish Flute and Tin Whistle
Tumblr media
The first and most important step for any Irish flute or tin whistle player is to master your breathing and tone. After that, everything else will fall into place.
Your next step should be learning the most suitable tunes for your instrument. But where should you start? No one wants to waste their time struggling to learn the wrong tunes when the right repertoire can be learned far more easily in half the time.
So, to lend a helping hand, I decided to put together this handy guide for all the blossoming flute and whistle players out there. These are three of my favourite tunes which also happen to be perfect for learners of the Irish flute and tin whistle.
With these tunes under your belt, you’ll be well on your way to being session ready. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started.
Contents
What Makes the Ideal Beginner Flute or Whistle Tune?
The Galway Belle Polka
Deirdre’s Fancy Slip Jig
Off She Goes Jig
What Next?
What Makes the Ideal Beginner Flute or Whistle Tune?
I’ve included a polka, a slip jig and a single jig for some variety. You might be wondering what the difference is between a slip jig and a single jig is – don’t worry, it’s simple, I promise.  A single jig is your ‘standard’ jig with six short beats in every bar. These lovely tunes have a characteristic rhythm of alternating long and short notes. It’s this rhythm that makes them instantly recognisable as single jigs.
Slip jigs are played in 9/8. In other words, they’re greedy jigs that have an additional three beats per bar. Don’t panic, they’re no more complicated to play than ‘regular’ jigs.
Both The Galway Belle and Deirdre’s Fancy will help you to practice scale-like passages, as well as simple movement between the lower and higher octaves.
Off She Goes will help you with alternating stepwise movement, to help you to practice commonly used intervals and fingering that you’ll find in tonnes of other tunes.
To learn more about Irish flute and whistle playing and take your playing to the next level, why not check out my blog post: Master the Irish Flute Using These Simple Exercises. (They’ll work for whistle players too!)
The Galway Belle Polka
The Galway Belle Polka, also known as the 69th Street Polka or Captain Moonlight’s Army, is a great little tune that I’m always surprised isn’t more popular or widely known.
It’s a useful tune for introducing notes in the higher range or second octave, without being too demanding. The simple stepwise movement and scale-like melodic phrases make the fingering nice and straightforward for any beginner flute or whistle players.
The leap from the B to the high E will provide a nice challenge, without being too complicated, while the A-F-D patterns are ones that will be repeated so often in other tunes that you’re better off committing them to muscle memory now.
Have a listen to this beautiful harp rendition. Though, you should note that she’s playing in the key of A minor, not E minor as notated above:
Deirdre’s Fancy Slip Jig
Deirdre’s Fancy is another great tune for beginner flute and whistle players. Like The Galway Belle it’s played in E minor, so most of the fingerwork and movement will already be familiar to you.
Slip jigs are typically played at a slower tempo than single or double jigs, so you can really relax into a slow, steady pace with this one.
Off She Goes Jig
In Ireland, many of us first encounter this tune at Irish dancing classes. Its melody is often sung by dancing teachers across the country to teach us the basic steps we need to get started with our ‘one two threes’.
It’s also a great tune for learners of traditional Irish music. The second part will be a challenge at first, with its use of notes in the second octave. But it will also provide excellent practice for producing clear high notes on your flute or whistle.
The ‘long short’ alternating rhythm is synonymous with single jigs and one well worth learning early on.
What Next?
With these three tunes under your belt, you’ll be ready to tackle anything. If you’re itching to learn more tunes and expand your knowledge and repertoire, I highly recommend The Complete Guide to Learning the Irish Flute by Fintan Vallely.
If you’re looking to sink your teeth into something a little more advanced however, An Fheadóg Mhór by Conal Ó Gráda will give you an in-depth look at Irish flute playing techniques.
Once you’ve mastered everything these flute experts have to offer, why not check out our own Guide to Irish Flute Playing Styles and see which playing style might be for you.
Alternatively, if you haven’t invested in your new beginner instrument yet and you’re finally feeling motivated, take a look at our Online Flute and Whistle Store. You can browse our full range of beginner flutes and tin whistles – each designed to cater for the needs of beginner musicians.
For students starting out learning the Irish wooden flute style, I always recommend my best-selling Cygnet Rosewood Flute as an excellent, pocket-friendly choice. Those of you who want a premium flute experience should take a look at the McNeela African Blackwood flute – African blackwood is the traditional Irish flute player’s wood of choice.

“banjo. An iconic and uplifting element of the fleadh cheoil soundscape, this instrument was played by Irish musicians in the USA in the nineteenth century. Its sound has been preserved on early recordings f rom as far back as 1916. Today it has many outstanding exponents, and perhaps more than any other instrument is likely to be engaged also with other sympathetic music forms, particularly American Old-Time music. […] five-string banjo. What brought the instrument to the attention of the nation, however, was a grotesque representation of African American culture by white performers in black-face ‘minstrel’ shows which toured Ireland just before the Famine. Percy French played banjo in such a format c.1880. The banjo they introduced was most likely the five- string banjo of the minstrels and not the earlier three- or four-string variety which was common on the plantations. This is supported by a nineteenth- century sketch in Captain Francis O’Neill’s Irish Minstrels and Musicians of piper Dick Stephenson and banjoist John Dunne, where the fifth string and peg on Dunne’s banjo are clearly visible.”

A Pong for Big Ben
The politics show continues its course. This week we have the 'brexit'. Its defenders and several grouppies have organized a party that reminds us of the arrival of a new year. The absence of Big Ben from the farewell event with a giant stopwatch is perhaps one of the best metaphors of this whole process. Boris johnson I wanted it to be the clock, a symbol of London and, therefore, of the United Kingdom, that with its bells marked the beginning of a new era far from the EU. But Big Ben was under construction and to be able to get it started on time, 500,000 pounds were needed, which the British Prime Minister decided to finance through a microfinance campaign. In a few days they reached 200,000, but they also discovered that they could not use the money for the purpose pursued, since they have not obtained the corresponding permits. Now the money raised will go to a military charity, 'Help for Heroes'. renohotline
Tumblr media
It would not hurt to remind those who celebrate that these days also commemorates De Gaulle's rejection of   British accession in 1963. Twice, twice, the French general was planted and until he left the Elisha, the United Kingdom did not leave. managed to integrate into the then European Community. His fear, how close London was to Washington. In light of Trump's compliments   to  Jonhson , the old general was not so misled, or perhaps it is only the self-fulfilling prophecy. In any case, from his entrance, or in spite of him, a new unknown term was inaugurated until then and that now is tremendously fashionable, Euroscepticism. Thatcher's neoliberalism  and its impact on society so well portrayed by  Owen Jones  in his book 'Chavs' they prepared the breeding ground on which it has been built, articulated and finally, concretizing the 'brexit'. You could say that  Johnson  is the best crop ever planted.
Relationship with himself A few days ago I came to my hands, thanks to the editorial 'Captain Swing', an essay entitled 'A Heroic Failure or Brexit and the politics of pain' by  Fintan O'Toole. The author states that in reality the 'brexit' is not about the relationship of the United Kingdom with the EU, but that the real issue is precisely the "exit", regardless of where it really should. The motto 'Leave means leave' it is clear in this sense, to leave is to leave, but it does not raise where or where to go. What the UK really has to face is its relationship with itself to try to build bridges that articulate an absolutely unstructured and divided society as a result of this The British leaders now have a responsibility to provide content to 'Brexit', something they have been dodging from the beginning.
For its part, from the EU it is now time not only to build a new relationship with London, but also to strengthen internal integration processes that prevent new departures. Remember that there are already those who point to Italy as the next on the list.

manuscript search tag game
I was tagged by @winterandwords! thank you!
my words are spirit, wild, beauty, create
spirit (Hurricane)
This got a cheer from the assembled crew. Theo, towards the back, still looked concerned, but at her words his eyes lit up.
Her spirits lifted a fraction and she managed a smile. “Since you’re all so enthusiastic, I expect you can get the Firebird ready to sail real quick. As quick as you’ve ever done it.”
A smattering of laughter.
“I wasn’t kidding. Get on it!” She nodded to herself. “There’s a good wind and I want to be gone. Marisa, take the wheel. Sequoia, are you alright? Can you go lookout?”
“Yes, captain!”
“Good.” She turned back to the group. “Let’s go get our girl!”
Cheering again, the crew split up.
wild (Dragonsong)
“You want a fight?”
“Not particularly,” Isi muttered.
Brendon had already drawn his sword and covered the ground between them. His first slash was large and wild. She sidestepped it with ease and swung her staff down.
He parried, but Isi kept the staff’s momentum going. It smacked into his shoulder, ringing dully off his armour. Brendon hissed and stabbed at her again. Isi batted it to one side and slammed the end of the staff into his gut.
He staggered backwards, losing his grip on the sword. His feet went out from under him in the snow and he fell on his backside.
beauty (Dragonsong)
“I don’t know for certain. Wherever the wind calls me. I was born here, in the cradle of these mountains, and then they became my prison. I will not die here.”
A somber mood settled over the conversation like a blanket. A light one, but it was there. Isi ran a finger gently over the rock she sat on. “You will be free soon. Free to go where you will, to live where you will. To die where you will.” The thought of Fintan dying was a sad one, but he seemed content. Not content to die in this place, this prison, but to die elsewhere. Despite her sadness, there was a certain beauty in the idea that he would die free.
