Alone Again
It’s Mattie’s birthday and I wanted to write some Mattie and his Uncle Scottie content so what a better time then now. This is not historically accurate at all, but I wanted some little Mattie with Alastair.
Rating: T
Relationship: Canada + Scotland
Word Count: 641
Alone again this year. Just like last year, and the year before that, and the year before that. He knew the life of a nation was busy, let alone an empire that only seemed to grow with each passing day. Arthur had a lot on his plate, and Matthew knew this. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t hurt that Arthur couldn’t stay for his birthday again.
He didn’t want to get out of bed. He didn’t want to face the empty house. Perhaps he could pretend to be sick, and the maids would let him stay in bed all day. There was a knock at his door, but Matthew decided to ignore it and pretend to still be asleep. “Oi, lad. You gonna sleep your birthday away?” a gruff, thickly accented voice called. It couldn’t be. Uncle Allie was supposed to still be in Scotland. He didn’t have time to process it when he was suddenly lifted up, blankets and all. He was attacked with kisses, his uncle’s beard tickling his cheek.
“Uncle Allie,” Matthew squealed, wriggling around, “That tickles.”
Alastair stopped, but not before placing one more kiss on the boy’s forehead. “Happy birthday Mattie.”
“I thought you were back home.”
“I couldn’t let you be all alone on your birthday. Your idiot of a father left?”
Matthew nodded solemnly. “Last week.”
Alastair mumbled angrily, his grip on Matthew tightening. Oh dear, he had made his uncle angry. “I’m sorry…” Matthew whispered, arms coming around Alastair’s neck and hugging him.
“Oh, lad…You have nothing to apologize for. Let’s just forget all about your father for the time being hmm? I think some breakfast is in order.”
Matthew still felt guilty: for making Alastair mad, for him coming all this way just for him, but he knew his uncle wouldn’t hear any of it. So he let it go.
“I know that look, Matthew. Don’t worry. I’m not mad.”
“I-It’s not that,” Matthew stuttered out, “I just…y-you didn’t have to come all this way.”
A pained look crossed Alastair’s face for a brief second, but it was quickly replaced with a wide smile. “I know, but I wanted to.” Alastair leaned in closer. “Don’t tell your brother this,” he whispered, “But you’re my favorite nephew, so I’ll take any excuse to come and see you.”
Matthew giggled. He found it hard to believe he could be anyone’s favorite, but maybe he could trust it coming from Uncle Allie. Matthew gestured for Alastair to come in closer, and the Scotsman was happy to comply. “You’re my favorite uncle,” Matthew whispered back.
Matthew didn’t think it was possible for someone to smile as wide as Alastair was right now. He lifted Matthew high into the air and spun him around. The young nation laughed encouraging his uncle to as well. Eventually, the two fell back onto the bed. Matthew pulled his blank over both of them, before cuddling into Alastair’s side. “Always so considerate,” Alastair mused, ruffling Matthew’s hair. Matthew looked away sheepishly.
After a few moments of catching their breath, Alastair sat up. “Now about that breakfast.”
“Can I help?”
Alastair quirked a brow. “You sure about that. You’re the birthday boy you should–”
“But I want to,” Matthew cried.
Alastair gave him another smile. “Well…If that’s what you want. You’re the birthday boy, you get to do whatever you want today.”
So the two headed downstairs and made breakfast for both themselves and the maids on duty. Alastair had kept them all entertained, sharing stories about his most recent voyage over. As Matthew looked around at everyone laughing, he felt an overwhelming sense of emotion. He started off the morning not wanting to get out of bed and face a quiet house, but now, that house was bustling with life and laughter. Matthew couldn’t have asked for a better birthday gift.

Canada Day has arrived again - 2022 marks the 155th anniversary of Canada being an independent nation. However, my celebrations this year will be slightly more muted than in previous years. It's here that I have to tell a rather difficult truth.
While I still love Canada and still dream of seeing it again one day, it does not make me feel the same way as it used to a year ago, and I have stopped thinking about living there. It now just feels like another country to me, one that does have its problems as well as its positives - as any other country does. Since my visit to Texas, my attention has been focused more on the latter, and with some family problems arising in the last few weeks, family is the most important thing for me right now. This means I should feel closer to the place that they call home - and I'm going to start celebrating every Fourth of July too. (As a matter of fact, I'm going to Colombia on the 7th of July until the 8th of August to attend to family matters, and if all is well, I'll also be going to Spain in September.)
However, this does not mean that I will stop loving Canada - far from it. My mind has simply moved on to other things. This has happened throughout my life and most likely will continue to do so. I've even thought up of ideas for crossovers of Canadian Boys with the Lonestar Boys (one idea being Toronto and Austin having a music jam session together!). So while that flame of passion hasn't exactly gone out yet, it doesn't burn quite as brightly as it used to before.
All that said, I will still celebrate Canada Day every July 1st, in honour of the country that was my dream for nearly twelve years.
And despite all its problems, may you have a Happy Canada Day too.

Speaking of Mattie and his Uncle Scottie. I actually got a last minute fic planned with little Matthew celebrated his birthday with Alastair. Will it be historically accurate? No. Would Mattie celebrate his b’day on the first as a kid? Probably not. But I don’t care and I just want a little Mattie bonding with his uncle Allie.
