Mexican goth bands Calaverx and Dechakhal and Texan band Haunt Me will be coming to Southern California this February! They will be performing at La Santa in Santa Ana (Orange County as opposed to the usual Los Angeles!) on February, 3, 2023.

Started the day at St. Francis Fountain with Jess, sat outside, clinked mimosas as a downpour started, but it ended quick and I walked to Zeitgeist and got Marc a Maker's on the rocks like old times, talked Philly hoops with Mojo, said hi to Erica, talked blogging 15 years ago with Jeff, drank a Fernet and ginger beer, and then walked most of the way home, helped Jess clean up a weather related mishap at our neighbors', ate a snack and then caught a bus to the Knockout for the honky tonk happy hour with Nashville Honeymoon who were great, got an Espolon and soda and sat down next to J-Man and Glenn, reminisced about Inky Psyche, talked to Janet a bit and booked her for another DJ gig at the brewery, talked to Bryan a bit and told him his honky tonk happy hour idea was GOLD, then I took the 49 straight to the Castle for the Gabi Bravo/Calaverx show which was pretty good, Lisbeth was DJing when I got there, I got another Espolon and soda or two, traded pics with Lizzy via text of the different shows we were at, and then J-Man and Glenn caught up with me and we chatted about the old days at the Castle, but then I had to go to Bottom of the Hill to see Kendra Morris who was pretty good, but the crowd was giving me the willies so I left a little early and headed home.

Something most people don’t know about me is that I like to make YouTube videos chronicling my travels and misadventures to different goth scenes around the world. Here is my video of my trips to Mexico City.

Mexico City, one of the spookiest places in the world. A place with a thriving Goth scene filled with so many great bands, DJs, clubs, boutiques and vibes. When we got there, much of decor from Day of the Dead still added to the overall ambience of the experience. We were met with lots of beautiful overcast and rainy days while adventuring through castles, Gothic cathedrals and ancient Aztec ruins. The positive relationship this culture has with death and its imagery can be traced back to our ancestors and the indigenous influence which permeates into the music and the art. This can be seen in the art of some of the most influential Mexican expressionist artists… like Frida Kahlo, Orozco, Goeritz and Siquieros whom incorporate death imagery into their art very vividly.

When it comes to the music some of the most influential Mexican rock artists like Caifanes started off drawing lots of influence from British post-punk and goth rock, or more contemporary darkwave acts like CALAVERX. This acceptance of the dark and macabre makes it a perfect center of gothic subculture where the clubs, often packed by early morning, are filled with Mexican bats dancing away into the night with the undead. There are boutiques with beautiful handmade clothing and jewelry to live your vampire aesthetic to its fullest.

Whether it’s taking a dive into the underworld by going into the caves of Teotihuacán filled with offerings to Aztec gods, or having casual meetups with local spooks in darks cafes like Bizarro and Salem Witches… you can truly see why this is a place where the scene thrives as one of the most immersive and inclusive in the world.

Sometimes it’s overwhelming the amount of alternative culture acceptance and events happening in one day that you can’t choose from what to do! Mexico City is a beautiful gothic city… with a culture that truly finds the light within the darkness. 🖤🦇🇲🇽
