Can we talk about the dragons some more?
I will be. Forever.
Many have already noted the care and detail that went into the design of each dragon, and I love watching the fall of Emon over and over to see new details each time.
But we also see so much of their personalities in this scene, and I love it so much?
Thordak is there to establish dominance, show his power, and accept worshipers, like a true red. He focuses on property damage (yes, people die, too, but that will happen when you nuke a mountain!) and showing off, because he wants lots of the ants in the city to survive. He needs their terrified adoration. We stan all of his "Is this your king?" speeches as he claims his throne.
Umbrasyl is doing what they've been told to do. As the least powerful of the remaining Conclave members, they are raining death from above but not overdoing it. Thordak has no domain and subjects if they melt it all. Bonus content fight between Umbrasyl and KimAllura. (P.S. they're not dead, guys!) I have a big soft spot for Umbrasyl, and I'm curious how much we will get to see the dynamic between the dragons as the story moves forward. They barely get along, and I hope we get to see them interacting with each other more. Something went down between them after Umbrasyl took over Gatshadow, and I want to know what it is that left the black dragon alone and stranded out there with busted palantiri.
Vorugal, it's been mentioned, we don't see a lot of in the fall of Emon. But that's exactly as it should be. Think about it: Vorugal is an elite hunter. They live a solitary life, always seeking more challenging prey to indulge in their favourite pastime. What is the point of destroying a city of helpless ants to Vorugal? So they go for the most challenging targets first, i.e. Allura. I'm disappointed that we didn't get the iconic shot of Vorugal perched on the side of her tower before they destroy it, but at least Vorugal still destroyed it in this version. Then it's almost like they're searching the city for worthy prey, doing the bare minimum to satisfy Thordak's orders. Of course Vorugal tracks them to Greyskull Keep. VM are worthy targets for the white dragon. I'm sad we didn't get to see Vorugal wrestle Thordak for dominance there. That was such a fantastic scene in campaign. Hopefully we'll get to see the two of them butting heads in a different way later on.
And Raishan, clever little pixie. She's just having fun with it. You see her casually flying around the city, blowing smoke here and there before she eats Scanlan's biggest fan. But she knows what she's doing. She killed Uriel with her first attack, and after that she's pretty much like a cat. What can I do that will satisfy Thordak's command but is the most amusing to me? Playing with VM, for one. She makes sure they know who she is, and that she knows who they are. After that, she's going to do what a green dragon does: be sneaky and infiltrate their keep even before they flee to Whitestone. She was a lot more subtle about it in campaign than she is about it here, but we want new viewers to feel like they've spotted something hidden, too (LARKIN WATCH!). Good job. Raishan was the first to give her name during the attack in the campaign, and of course she gave it to us here in the fall of Emon as well. We stan a queen. You'd better put some respect on her name.
Really looking forward to seeing more of her--and all the dragons--this season. Even if they just do cut-aways to their territory or Pike has dream sequences to show what's going on with them, I'll take it. We deserve more than just their death scenes. They are legendary villains and deserve as much love as the Briarwoods.

Huh, was just reading some of your older stuff an the comparations about the Briarwoods vs Raishan for equivalent of Trent threat to VM in relation to a main character, and you concluded there was a certain lack of equivalency.... But if you think about it.... Kevdak! He may not have the empire backing him, but to Grog the horde must have the same weight pre- everything
that's, actually an excellent point and i will happily take the correction on that! everyone kinda forgets grog had that kind of backstory, and im definitely not immune to that either, but as a trent equivalent i think kevdak is definitely close enough!
parental/mentor figure from their childhood/teen years
absolutely not a good parental figure, definitely counts as abusive, and responsible for shaping most of the thought processes that made their alignment less than good
on that note, pushed the team elitism line a lot as reasoning, for kevdak, the herd is physically superior and therefore we take what we want, for trent, we're intellectually superior and therefore it's our job to shape the masses into what we need from them
grog/caleb both essentially failed in their job, which led to their separation from the group, for grog he refused to kill someone and was beaten near to death and abandoned, for caleb he did kill his parents but it broke him and he was placed in the sanatorium for 11 years
ran from their past for years, grog deliberately avoided the herd, caleb deliberately avoided the assembly
until they were forced to face them diplomatically because they were keeping something they needed for another plot - the herd had westruun, and vox machina reluctantly needed their help with umbrasyl, the assembly had the beacons and the m9 reluctantly needed their help with the peace talks
tried to avoid that fight for years, but eventually agreed to a one on one duel to protect their friends
which their friends near immediately got involved with anyway
they won! but then there was the question of the power struggle remaining - they were offered that position, but didn't take it, leaving it to their reluctant ally they used to know who has been working under that mentor this whole time (zanror/astrid), no one's sure they're trustworthy, but they are helping, and seem to have more loyalty to grog/caleb than kevdak/trent
the kill box as an episode isn't as well remembered as fights like briarwoods or raishan, but it was one of the craziest they've had, and yeah, definitely momentous in the same way!

After a long day of truly cursed thoughts, I’ve come to the determination that the Cerberus Assembly can act as a sort of Exandrian analog of our world’s Silicon Valley, and I hate it. I hate hate hate it.
The more I think about it, the more it just sort of melds into my mind as fact. I can’t escape it. This is where I live now.
You’ve got this collection of self-proclaimed super geniuses, unbounded by modern social mores and determined to invent a new sort of ethics, with an intent on shaping history and sagely guiding the world into a better future. This is despite the fact that most of the ideas they have inevitably end up making the world worse, and the only thing “new” that they really bring into the world is a bunch of actually very old ideas coated in fresh circuitry/magic.
But let’s dig a little deeper and start getting specific.
They both have these images of fiercely independent, creative bodies desperate to remain free from government control, and sometimes even as a check on that very government. The heads of the Cerberus Assembly outright say their intent is to act as a check on the Crown, and are known to have many secrets the Crown is, to their knowledge, totally unaware of.
Tech companies, particularly in America, have this outward facing very libertarian outlook on things, saying they don’t wish to interfere in the very important process of democracy and free speech, while simultaneously feeling it is their responsibility to fact check those in power and hold them to account, with their “serious vetting” of political ads and the like on their platforms. They also lobby heavily against any and all regulation of their various products and services, preferring to let the “invisible hand” of the market provide the service of keeping them in check, much as the Cerberus Assembly prefers to handle its own problems internally.
But when you really dig into the details this is all bullshit. The Cerberus Assembly, for all intents and purposes, IS the Empire. They run the secret police, for goodness sake. The two are so interconnected, and the Assembly as an institution is so dependent on the infrastructure and manpower, and of course money (because the fancy clothes, giant towers, and expensive sets of material components don’t pay for themselves) of the Empire to accomplish its goals, it can’t serve as a real check on Imperial forces possibly “overstepping”, and it also has no material interest in doing so; the more power and control the Empire has, the more power and control the Assembly has; the less freedom the citizens have due to authoritarian “safety” measures implemented by the Crown, the safer the Assembly itself becomes to pursue it’s morally dubious work and experimentation.
The same goes with Silicon Valley and the various tech companies that fall under its ethos. They will expound continually on the necessary freedom from government control they must have to truly change the world in the ways they think are best, but the primary source of money for most of these companies are governments. They either primarily contract with governments for most of their actual profits or to use its already established infrastructure, as is the case with Amazon, or depend heavily on publicly funded research for their innovations, which is everyone from Apple to Google to Microsoft and dozens and dozens of smaller companies besides. They then even get to patent these publicly funded innovations and hold a monopolized stranglehold on their use. This is not even to mention the starter capital necessary to form many of these companies in the first place itself was provided by governments, with the rather, shall we say “morally questionable” Kingdom of Saudi Arabia being among the top contributors to such start ups.
Even when either of these groups claim to be self-made, it’s all bullshit. So many of our famous tech overlords that supposedly built themselves from nothing started at the upper reaches of society, with more than enough capital and connections to insure they were never at any real risk of failing in the first place. Most even went to the same elite institutions of learning that provide the vast majority of the political leadership of the United States, institutions they had access to due to their wealth and familial connections, not their brains. Elon Musk’s family owned an emerald mine in Zambia for God’s sake, one his family would have never owned without the British Empire being a thing.
The same can be said for the Assembly. The upper classes of the Dwendalian Empire are lousy with mages and magic users. If they don’t have a place to climb among the nobility, they work for the Assembly, and hope to climb there. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the only poorer mage recruits we know anything real about all were sucked up into the service of the Scourgers, one of the few arms of the Assembly known to regularly interact with societies lower reaches and not so positively at that, and had their familial identities obliterated in the process. Both of these groups are of the upper reaches of society and serve the upper reaches of society, and we should never think anything less.
And this brings us to the ideological framework both of these groups think with. They are both full to the brim with people who are individualists to the extreme. They all believe they are singular actors in the great tapestry of history, who got where they are by hard work and dedication, and anyone who isn’t there just didn’t do enough. The folks living in the tent city outside Zadash? lazy layabouts who simply have not applied their mind to be something greater, or perhaps their veins are just full of bad blood. Poor former factory workers in Detroit whose jobs have been moved to places where labor laws are weaker and wages are lower? If they’d only taken their education more seriously, they could be where I am! Or maybe they just never tried to be an Uber driver or delivering for Grubhub, because that’s how you really pull yourself out of poverty.
Meanwhile, most of the groups consist of people who have never once known real adversity and certainly not the hardship of poverty nor the lack of social and political power that position entails. They are blinded to the reality of most people in the world outside their rather small one, and thus have no understanding of the material hardship that most people experience during their everyday life.
You see this most clearer in the manner in which they try to solve what they see as societies great problems, with no clear thought put into the consequences of these particular solutions. In our world, this is particularly obvious. Uber is painted as an innovative means of transportation on a budget, when in reality it’s just a fleet of untrained, underpaid, non-unionized taxi drivers using their own personal vehicles at their own expense. Elon Musk is seen as this super genius when his solution to LA traffic wasn’t a more robust public transportation system or slowly reconstructing the city to be more pedestrian friendly, but instead to build a massive network of single car elevators under the city to zip cars to key hot spots faster in a manner people less anxious than me would still call risky at best. I mean most of these people think the key to ending poverty is teaching people to code or giving them STEM education, even when in a capitalist economy the only thing a sudden flooding of new coders and STEM educated folks would insure is that the jobs that require those skills will see a sudden massive drop in pay and benefits as the pool of prospective employees becomes over-saturated and individual workers no longer have any bargaining power to protect their once rare jobs. You already see this in animation and video game design, and you’ll certainly see it elsewhere.
For the Assembly, despite being praised as the brightest arcane minds of Wildmount, seem to get most of their ideas either by stealing them from others or digging them up out of the ground. But this is just the nature of empire; it’s always easier for an empire to consume than it is to create. So as little as they think of the Dynasty, they are eager to steal every little bit of knowledge they’ve discovered about Dunamis, and without the faith and moral sense the Luxon-based religion imposes, they will never be forced to put the use of this rare and dangerous magic into perspective. Imagine what harm they can cause with gravity and time magic when they don’t have that religious pressure to consider the value of life and choice. But this makes sense when their main sources of inspiration are the wizards of the Age Of Arcana; you know, the wizards whose hubris nearly destroyed the entire world and spurred an apocalyptic war that sent society into a dark age in which the gods themselves abandoned them? A+ inspiration material if you ask me.
Even the culture of these two groups in regards to how they regulate themselves is so eerily similar. Think of Delilah Briarwood. Member in good standing of the Cerberus Assembly. Also, worshipper of Vecna and talented necromancer. Only expelled from the Assembly after involvement from the Cobalt Soul, even when you know every other member of the Assembly almost certainly had loads of information on this lady.
It just makes me think of all the weird, right-wingers and Nazis who occasionally get expelled from the heights of Silicon Valley whenever some journalist exposes them, and how quickly their colleagues are to condemn them even when so many of them either knew this person was this way well before they were exposed or actively agreed with them and still do. I mean, think of how protected Bill Gates is, because of how much his philanthropist image has served to insulate and protect the gross consolidation of wealth and power in the hands of so few, even when his fortune was built on stolen ideas, military funding and research, and a hardcore software monopoly for well over a decade or two. Also, his philanthropy has done nothing to help African people build their own institutions of power independent of European and American influence, and have help distract us from the damage really caused to the entire continent by earlier colonialism and later capitalist imperialism.
This is to say as bad as our world is, I now definitely don’t want to live in Wildemount. I don’t want to live a world where Mark Zukerberg can cast Disintegrate. Not ideal. I guess I’ll just have to work that much harder to fix this one and not depend on learning Dunamancy to just put us on a different path. Bummer.

A little about me
Massie Block is a popular girl at OCD (Octavian Country Day), is alpha of the Pretty Committee, and is used to being the Top Alpha and idol of all the students, until Claire, a new girl from Orlando, moves to Westchester. Massie has brown hair, amber eyes, and expensive wardrobe. She is described as wearing (the fictional) Chanel No. 9 every day and people often mistake her signature scent for Chanel No. 19. On special occasions, she wears No. 5., while Chanel No. 19 is listed as her signature scent in The Cliquetionary.
Massie is known for her fashionable wardrobe, alpha status, comebacks, and confidence. It is stated in The Clique that she had a shiny brown bob and white teeth, but later, she grows out her hair. Her eyes are brown with amber specks, she adores lip gloss, and in Revenge of the Wannabes, it is said that she likes spray tanning. In Massie: The Summer Collection, she gets a purple streak in her hair that enables her to get just about anything she wants. Massie's astrological sign is Leo.
At first, Massie cannot stand Claire and decides to make her life miserable, and Claire doesn't understand why Massie doesn't like her, but Claire doesn't exactly think the best of Massie's friends, the PC (Pretty Committee). Massie sees Claire as a threat and is determined to stop her. Her lifelong struggle was to be the Top Alpha, or the Ruler.
Claire responds by turning Massie's friends against her, thinking it was the only way to "fit in" and be the "popular girl" at school, to make everyone like and envy her. At the end of the second book, they finally become friends. Throughout tough times, Massie and Claire start to rely on each other.
In the first book Massie falls for Chris Abeley but discovers that he already has a girlfriend named Fawn. In the second book Massie and Claire throw a Halloween party and they both really like a Briarwood boy named Cam Fisher. In the third book Massie finds out that Alicia started her own Clique and discovers Cam likes Claire, not her.
While dealing with Alicia, Massie starts liking Derrick Harrington, or Derrington, as the girls secretly call him. Her life is pure interesting, with Nina the Spanish boy-charming slut, getting expelled from OCD in Lake Placid thanks to Dylan's mom and their teacher, losing the lead role in "Dial L for Loser" to Claire, searching for the key to a secret room and not finding it first, getting Chris to fall for Skye Hamilton even though they were falling for each other, and designing the overflow trailers. Massie also falls for Dempsey, and finally, her perfect match, Landon Crane, who sort of becomes her boyfriend.
Although Massie is known as the alpha, she is the one whom her friends have turned against the most often of the five girls. It has been stated throughout the series that Alicia Rivera is prettier than Massie, but Massie is known as being over-thinking, and overall "leader" of the Pretty Committee, making her the true alpha. In the book My Little Phony, Massie finds out that her parents have gone broke.
Then Claire finds out. But in the book A Tale of Two Pretties her dad gets a new job but she has to move away from the Pretty Committee to England. When this happens, Alicia becomes the Alpha & Queen Bee, and Massie meets a new hottie, James, a brown-haired, British "Bawttie".
Massie also loves making nicknames for LBRs (Losers Beyond Repair).
Massie's father is William Block, and her mother is Kendra Block. She has a pet pug named Bean and a horse named Brownie.

She likes gummies but hates what they do to her weight.
She is modeled by Tsarina Merrin on the Clique book covers.
It is revealed in The Clique that her favorite color is purple, because it is the color of royalty.

St. Jericho is a school like no other. An elite private college that takes hell to get into and an application process that seems to scream insanity. Predicting where college basketball’s elite 5-star recruits will play
Which schools are poised to pull in the top recruits in the class of 2019?
As the top basketball players in the class of 2019 enter their senior year of high school, a dominant narrative has yet to emerge for the group. Last year’s class was defined by its wings, with the top three (Zion Williamson, R.J. Barrett, Cam Reddish) all choosing Duke. The 2017 class was led by its strong crop of big men (Deandre Ayton, Mohamed Bamba, Marvin Bagley, Wendell Carter Jr.), while the 2016 class was all about the elite depth at point guard (Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, De’Aaron Fox, Dennis Smith).
Will a theme emerge for this year’s recruits? It doesn’t feel like it. While the 2019 class is deep and talented throughout the top-100, it lacks the top-end star power of the previous few years. At this point, the upper tier of the junior class — led by Evan Mobley, Scottie Barnes, and Jalen Green — feels significantly more tantalizing from the perspective of long-term potential.
No matter: there are still some very good players in the class of 2019, and their recruiting decisions will alter the landscape of college basketball in the the 2019-20 season and beyond. To this point, only eight of the top 25 players in ESPN’s rankings have already committed, and the top six players all remain up for grabs.
With a run of commitments likely coming after Nico Mannion’s pledge to Arizona, it’s time to make some predictions for the top unsigned players. This is our best guess at which schools are poised for a big haul on the recruiting trail.
James Wiseman - Memphis

ESPN Ranking: No. 1
Position: Center
Hometown: Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis is in position to land a monster class in its first full year under Penny Hardaway. Hardaway has deep connections throughout the class of 2019 due to his time running the Team Penny program on Nike’s EYBL circuit, and there’s no player he has stronger ties to than its No. 1 player: center James Wiseman, played for Hardaway both at East Memphis High School and on Team Penny.
Wiseman’s recruitment is seen as a battle between Memphis and Kentucky right now. Can Hardaway really keep the top prospect in the class away from John Calipari? If he can, it will be a serious announcement that Memphis has arrived as a major player on the recruiting scene. If Wiseman picks Memphis, expect a few friends to follow. Hardaway is also in good position with top-50 prospects Trendon Watford, DJ Jeffries, and Chandler Lawson.

ESPN Ranking: No. 2
Position: Point guard
Hometown: Briarwood, New York
Anthony is only ranked No. 3 in his class by some outlets, but no player will make a bigger impact in college basketball as a freshmen than the point guard from New York. One scout described Anthony’s game to me as a more athletic Jalen Brunson. He was named MVP of Nike’s EYBL circuit after averaging 26.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.4 steals over 16 games this spring.
Anthony’s recruitment remains wide open, with Duke and then Oregon as the two most popular picks on 247 Sports’ crystal ball. We’re going with North Carolina. Anthony has already scheduled an official visit to Chapel Hill, and the Tar Heels could be an elite point guard away from national championship contention a year from now. After a few down years in recruiting while NCAA allegations hung in the air, the Heels are now back to recruiting at a high level. Nabbing Anthony would cement that.
Vernon Carey Jr. - Michigan State

ESPN Ranking: No. 3
Position: Center
Hometown: Southwest Ranches, Florida
Carey has great bloodlines as the son of former NFL left tackle Vernon Carey. Dad became a first-round NFL draft pick after playing his college ball at Miami, and the Hurricanes are in the mix to land his. Duke, Kentucky, and Michigan State are also vying for Carey, who is a polished low post scorer with a developing face-up game that lacks elite explosiveness.
This one feels totally up in the air for now, but we’ll go with Michigan State. Tom Izzo has been recruiting Carey since he emerged as a top prospect. The Spartans are recruiting at a high level in recent years even if their NCAA tournament hasn’t reflected it. It will be fascinating to see if Izzo’s refusal to give super prospect Jaren Jackson Jr. major minutes has any impact on the recruitment another star big man like Carey.
Isaiah Stewart - Duke

ESPN Ranking: No. 4
Position: Center
Hometown: Rochester, New York
Stewart is the most physically developed of the elite big men in this class. He is a man-child in every sense at 6’9, 245 pounds with a 7’4 wingspan. He is the best rebounder in this class, especially on the offensive end. Even with Wiseman and Carey playing on the same circuit, it was Stewart who was named to the All EYBL First Team at center after averaging 17.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
You know Duke is going to land one of the elite centers. If it’s not Carey, Stewart makes a lot of sense. The Blue Devils have recruited better than any school in America the last few years, but don’t have a commitment yet for 2019. That won’t last for long.
Jaden McDaniels - Arizona
ESPN Ranking: No. 5
Position: Combo forward
Hometown: Federal Way, Washington
I’d argue McDaniels has the highest long-term ceiling of any prospect in this class. At 6’10, 185 pounds, he’s the type of oversized wing scorer teams at every level covet. Jonathan Isaac and Brandon Ingram have been thrown out as early comparisons.
McDaniels is from Washington state and he’s the younger brother of San Diego State star sophomore Jalen McDaniels. This recruitment is taking on a distinct West Coast vibe so far, with Washington, Arizona, and SDSU all in tight. It’s possible Duke or Kentucky makes a big push late to change the complexion of this recruitment, but we’ll go with Arizona for now. The Wildcats just landed a five-star guard in Mannion to prove the FBI allegations won’t have a dramatic impact on the 2019 class. With McDaniels, Sean Miller would likely have one of the best groups of incoming freshmen in the country.
Matthew Hurt - Kansas
ESPN Ranking: No. 6
Position: Big
Hometown: Rochester, Minnesota
Hurt might have the most advanced offensive repertoire of any big man in this class. What he lacks in length and athleticism he makes up for with skill and IQ. There are other big men in this class with brighter long-term outlooks, but it’s possible Hurt is the most productive of the front court players in this class as a college freshmen.
Hurt hails from Rochester, Minnesota and his brother plays for the Golden Gophers. The hometown pull with Minnesota is alluring, but it’s hard to pass up a blue blood when they’re all chasing you. We’ll go with Kansas here after Hurt started every game for Bill Self’s U18 team during a gold medal run at the FIBA Americas Championship this summer.

ESPN Ranking: No. 8
Position: Wing
Hometown: Australia
Green came over to the U.S. early in his high school career and has developed into one of the toughest wings in this class. At 6’6, Green projects as a two-way swingman with the length and mentality to defend multiple positions and the shooting stroke to eventually become a spot-up threat from three-point range.
North Carolina offered Green at the end of July, and have been viewed as the favorite since. A Carolina team with Cole Anthony and Josh Green would be immensely fun.
Precious Achiuwa - UConn

ESPN Ranking: No. 10
Position: Wing
Hometown: Bronx, New York
Achiuwa is brimming with long-term upside if his skill level can ever match his physicality. At 6’9, 210 pounds, Achiuwa can bring length, athleticism, and defensive versatility to either forward spot. There are few prospects in this class who have a more solid physical foundation of valuable long-term traits that can be built upon.
Achiuwa played his high school ball at St. Benedict’s in New Jersey before deciding to transfer to Florida powerhouse Montverde for his senior year. Who else spent time at St. Benedict’s? New UConn coach Dan Hurley, who coached the basketball program there for nine years. Also of interest: Achiuwa’s older brother plays for St. John’s, another school that’s been heavily invested in him. Don’t discount Kansas or Syracuse either, but for now we’ll go with the Huskies.
Scottie Lewis - Florida
ESPN Ranking: No. 13
Position: Wing
Hometown: Hazlet, New Jersey
Lewis has been a staple in the five-stars territory since this class started being evaluated. At 6’4, Lewis is one of the most explosive leapers in the country and is able to leverage his athleticism on the defensive end. He’s the prospect in this class most likely to end up on SportsCenter with a ridiculous dunk or block.
Florida has emerged as the favorite to land Lewis, though Kentucky is also in the mix. The director of Lewis grassroots team on the Under Armour circuit is Brian Klatsky, who is a Florida alum. Klatsky’s son Alex committed to the Gators over the summer. Florida also has a commitment from five-star point guard Tre Mann, putting the Gators in position to land one of the country’s most impressive recruiting hauls if it can sign Lewis.
Bonus predictions for some other 5-stars
Jalen Lecque, point guard: Hyper athletic, late blooming lead guard is down to six schools. He’d remind Wolfpack fans of Dennis Smith Jr. Prediction: NC State
Josiah James, point guard: A 6’6 lead guard who NBA teams will be watching closely. Clemson is in tight. This recruitment might come down to whether or not Tre Jones opts to be a one-and-done. Prediction: Duke
C.J. Walker, wing: Athletic 6’8 combo forward who skyrocketed up the rankings this summer. Florida and LSU are fighting for him. Prediction: LSU
D.J. Jeffries, wing: Former Kentucky commit is a scoring wing with a strong relationship with Penny Hardaway. Prediction: Memphis
Trayce Jackson-Davis, big man: The son of former Pacers center Dale Davis is an athletic center who won a gold medal with USA Basketball this summer. Prediction: Indiana
Wendell Moore, guard: It’s a Duke vs. UNC battle for the dependable scoring swingman. Prediction: Duke
Trendon Watford, wing: Christian Watford’s younger brother is an even better prospect as a scoring combo forward any program could use. Prediction: Memphis
Cassius Stanley, wing: Big-time athlete who has been a five-star since he was a freshman. He’d fit Andy Enfield’s up-tempo, free-styling attack well. Prediction: USC

new opinions of the cerberus assembly (etgw spoilers!!)
somewhat inspired by the conversations the other day, bc it’s reminded me i have a lot to say about these motherfuckers
let’s start with the obvious:
Master Trent Ikithon, Archmage of Civil Influence (Chaotic Evil Human)
Book Text: [Trent is respected as the acclaimed Propagandist of the empire and the third oldest member of the assembly. Once an instructor at the Soltryce Academy, he only returns every few years to collect young students for his experiments in the mental conditioning that he calls “awakening.” Many of these students go mad and are locked away, but those who endure become zealots for the assembly and join the Volstrucker, an elite group of arcane thugs commonly known as Scourgers, who perform the assembly’s dirtiest work under Trent’s direction.]
Most of this we knew. I hate this guy. Though, as a point of interest -
Caleb’s for sure not the first person this has happened to. They account for a certain number of aspiring Volstrucker never completing the program, Caleb was just another statistic. Which means somewhere in Vergessen is a lot of other people with the same backstory who never managed to escape. That’s, something worth looking into, maybe.
Martinet Ludinus Da’leth, Archmage of Domestic Protections (Lawful Evil Elf)
[Ludinus is the oldest and only original member of the assembly, as well as the master of warfare and conflict. Charged with overhauling the military structure of the Dwendalian Empire, Ludinus directed the construction of the garrisons on the Xhorhasian border and often oversees their maintenance. He was one of the mages who survived the destruction of Molaesmyr and fled to Bysaes Tyl, but he saw the opportunity to achieve greatness within the empire and left his culture behind to continue his arcane pursuits. Wise, if emotionless, he bears a deep hatred for the Kryn Dynasty and spares no effort gathering information on their weaknesses and secrets. Ludinus spends most of his time developing arcane weapons of war and shoring up the military might of the empire, while subtly challenging the leadership of Crown Marshal Damurag.]
This guy’s old. That's the scariest thing about him really. Like, this guy's been in the empire since it was half its current size. This guy saw the destruction of Molaesmyr, and knew many of its residents. But he also rejected that society, purely for his own ends. He's at least 400 years old, more likely at least 500, and for the past 3-4 centuries has been focusing entirely on magic and warfare. That's a long time to hone those skills. Ludinus may say it's hard to compare power in the Assembly, but if I had to pick one of them for an end game boss, it would be him, no question. Trent's more of a wild card, sure, but he's only like 60, 70 years old. He's a baby compared to Da'leth. Keep an eye on this dude, and under no circumstances trust him.

Canon confirmation that this is who took over from Delilah Briarwood, and from what we’ve seen, they’re rather similar people. They're both scientists and historians, ruthlessly efficient, far more concerned with what they can learn and what they can do than what's good or safe for those around them. Liable to be found breaking the law in the name of science and progress. At least Vess has lasted longer than her predecessor.
Headmaster Oremid Hass, Archmage of Cultivation (Lawful Neutral Earth Genasi)
[The current headmaster of the Hall of Erudition in Zadash, Oremid is tasked with watching and grooming the next generation of mages and arcane specialists outside Rexxentrum. While he himself is a gentle soul who adores animals, he puts on the façade of a strict man with no sense of humor, which is further enhanced by the elemental influence of his earth genasi blood. He teaches students that failure is not an option, and that emotion is a barrier to one’s true ability. Equally feared, respected, and privately loathed by the students (and some instructors), Oremid personally dismisses those who break under his school’s curriculum and heaps joyous praise on those who endure their training.]
So, I've had teachers like this. And they stick in your mind, because, even a decade later, I still have a hard time getting over their instilled fear of failure. I can believe that, in general terms, Oremid's not a terrible person. I think he looks the other way on a lot of things, which precludes him from ever qualifying as good in my books, but he hasn't committed any major acts of torture or murder himself. Still though. You don't teach like that if you view your students as people. You teach like that if you view your students as potential assets. So like.... not as bad as some of his colleagues. Potentially someone they could work with if they had to. But still probably someone to stay away from.
Headmaster Zivan Margolin, Archmage of Conscription (Lawful Neutral Human)
[Zivan Margolin inherited the position of headmaster from his father, the late Jorma Margolin. Zivan has been the headmaster of the Soltryce Academy in Rexxentrum for nearly twenty years. Calm, patient, and quietly imposing, Zivan walks the halls of the Academy with a keen eye for talent. He is in charge of the curriculum and also watches for any latent powers that may be worth grooming as future allies of the assembly, dangers to be monitored, or prospective minds for Ikithon to conscribe into the Volstrucker. Zivan has rarely had the opportunity to demonstrate his full power, for he is typically busied with keeping the peace between the feuding members of the assembly. Those who have witnessed his true might, however, now know that his words are backed by some of the most powerful magics within the Cerberus Assembly.]
I think @lostsometime said it best, having the archmage of conscription be in charge of your elite magic school really sums up everything wrong with the empire. Like, if that's out in the open, your problems are unfixable. Get a new government. Jeez.
Master Doolan Tversky, Archmage of Dysology (Chaotic Neutral Gnome)
[The second-oldest member of the assembly, Doolan is in charge of the study and understanding of abnormal creatures and deviants of arcane creation that might threaten the empire’s way of life. She is an absentminded yet brilliant gnome who is obsessed with all beasts, aberrations, and creatures of legend. Doolan imports creatures from around the world to study, disassemble, and use in her attempts to revolutionize magical practices. She resents the Library of the Cobalt Soul, as her reputation has caused them to bar her from their facilities. She wishes to catalog the unstudied horrors of Xhorhas and has covertly obtained the services of the Myriad to retrieve new specimens.]
Now, Doolan is fascinating to me, not because I think she's a good person, but because she's just so delightfully weird. She's probably done some evil as fuck shit but she's also a gremlin of a gnome who loves weird fucked up arcane experiments and magical meteors that created eldritch ducks and all sorts of bizarre things like that. I'd love to see more of her, because there's always room in fantasy stories for more weird morally ambiguous old ladies who are banned from libraries on the grounds of "is about as likely to eat the books as she is to read them" and "last time we let her in here she somehow combined five forbidden rituals and created a new species of demon that haunts the halls of the rexxentrum archive spreading toxic slime everywhere and we can't figure out what it wants or how to make it go away".
Lord Athesias Uludan, Archmage of Diplomatic Union (Neutral Good Human)
[Athesias’s charm and bombastic personality serve him well as a diplomat. His duty is to foster a positive relationship with people of power both within and beyond the borders of the empire. He was originally one of the most effective instructors at the Soltryce Academy, but his penchant for spectacle and his rampant narcissism made him a difficult ally to trust with state secrets. When the office of Diplomatic Union opened, he was quickly and quietly reassigned. Athesias finds great pleasure in ruining or usurping the plans of his counterpart in the Crown’s employ, Emissary Lord Zeddan Graf.]
We’ve talked a bit about Uludan already - the Gilderoy Lockhart of the group for sure. Though I’m sure he has layers to him, so I’d be interested to find out what exactly they are.
And, saving the most interesting for last,
Baroness Jenna Iresor, Archmage of Industry (True Neutral Doppelganger)
[One of the younger members of the assembly, Jenna is known for her business acumen and her extravagant lifestyle. By hiding her nature as a doppelganger and using memory-altering magics at a young age to fabricate a false past, Jenna constructed her human persona from the ground up, leveraging her powers of deception to essentially write herself into history as a Clovis Concord expatriate. She helps oversee central guild business in Rexxentrum under Guildmaster Kai Arness, and helps Exchequer Aethia Drooze organize the collection of tithes through starostas across the empire.]
I am, insanely curious about how a doppelganger ended up in the Cerberus Assembly. She’s definitely ambitious for sure, doppelgangers already have a fair bit of innate magic - they’re natural shapeshifters and have a fair amount of psychic powers (like reading minds of anyone who happens to be near them), but to get here she had to be extremely committed. Which means she probably has plans for this position, or had plans that she’s already put into motion. Very interested what those are, especially for the archmage of industry.
