we lay here for years or for hours thrown here or found to freeze or to thaw so long we become the flowers two corpses we were two corpses i saw
on the 24th we celebrate midsommar, or summer solstice here :) its a holiday i hold very close to my heart and it means a lot to me, and so does this bog body, nicknamed bockstensmannen. and i dont really know what compelled me to draw this but i felt really emotional while drawing it. archaeology and art will do that to you i guess. hozier felt fitting.

one of my funniest therapy moments was when i asked the therapist ‘so you know the Bocksten Man?’ and it was clinically relevant.

Everyday in my notes people love and support bockstensmannen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bockstensmannen being one of swedens absolute most famous dead people showcased at a swedish museum
It is interesting to show how much attention he apperntly could get on a international plattform
Bockstensmannen go! And also, perhaps if you found my blog via bockstensmannen post, please consider clicking the link for the musuem who got him. They need some well deserved internet traffic!
And also, i feel like they should reap some pf the benefits, my post being me basically live blogging what i learned on their website
This is the link to the musuem.
There are translation options to click on the website. They appear to be sadly be machine generated though... but swedish and english are closely related languages, so at least that one should be unddrstanble, although oddly worded at times

The Bocksten Man
Introduction
The case about the Bocksten Man might seem mundane at first glance; the murder was committed sometime during the 12th century, neither the victim nor the murderer is known and the method of killing was not unusual. However, the Bocksten Man is now displayed at the Varberg County Museum in Sweden since his body is one of the most well-preserved in Europe. The Bocksten Man’s liver, brain, cartilage, and parts of his lungs are preserved, and even his hair and clothing are intact.
Who was the Bocksten Man?
By examining the Bocksten Man’s teeth, odontologist Gunnar Johansson concluded that the victim was around 25-30 years old when he died. His place of birth is unknown, but he spent at least one year in Varberg before he was killed. The victim was around 170 cm, he did not have a lot of muscle mass and was of slender build. His profession has been debated, but one theory is that the Bocksten Man was a priest. This theory was based on the hood he was wearing, which was common clothing within the church. Another indicator of his profession is a symbol on his shield, which according to amateur historian Owe Wennerholm depicts a cross. Even if the Bocksten Man was not a priest, most historians agree that he was of higher social class, which is based on the fact that he did not have a lot of muscle mass.
How did he die?
According to professor Claes Lauritzen, the Bocksten Man was beaten to death. The murder weapon is not known, but Lauritzen believes that a pole could have been used in the murder. The victim was hit across his lower jaw, right ear and was then killed by being hit in the back of his head.
The impalement
When the Bocksten Man was found in 1936, 600 years after his death, he was impaled with three poles. One had been lodged in his heart, the second above his hip and the third had only ripped the victim’s clothing. Impaling corpses were probably common during this era, since people believed that impaling the dead would prevent the corpse from becoming a ghost.

science and history is so crazy like babes ?? they'll look at a 2000 year old skeleton and know the person's whole life story, look at a word and date it by the sound changes it has gone through, look at a mountain and tell you how it was shaped

Fiske

Bockstensmanen, a medieval person who happened to die in a bog which preserved his clothes (and more), clothes like hella comfy??
Like seriously. Comfy and warm wool clothes!
(yes this are pictures of his actual outfit, not reconstructed clothing. They were very well preserved in all except colour. The bog gave everything that yellow shade, i suspect)
