Many Black People have experienced some form of "parentalized" that has left them unable to prioritize themselves and express their emotional burdens; compiled with the lack of successfully completing their 8 stages of development, these open wounds have ultimately left many Black adults feeling unfulfilled and worthless. First of all, acknowledging that trauma, socioeconomic status, marginalization, etc is a roadblock to #gentleparenting is not excusing abuse. On the contrary, when the parent coaching community understands how systemic oppression intersects with parenting, we are able to go beyond tips and tricks to praxis. And praxis is where the change resides. I am an child's rights advocate above all and I firmly believe that liberating children means helping parents to be liberated. To pretend like privilege doesn't play a part in the ability to consistently be a gentle parent is not only harmful but it's unrealistic, especially as we are in our third year of Rona and families are struggling now more than ever. We can't bootstrap our way to gentle parenting folks. We can't affirm or journal our way there either. We need to stop acting like we are all playing with the same deck of cards and help parents learn to regulate themselves to them teach their kids to regulate or to co-regulate. We have to help parents see their behavior patterns and help them create actionable steps to figure out how they can override their impulses to be violent or harmful. Because that violent impulse doesn't disappear the day you commit to gentle parenting. Also there's a lot between gentle and abusive. You can cause harm and not be abusive. This jump to extreme binaries is keeping us stuck and is keeping us from helping one another do better. Community care means acknowledging struggles and roadblocks and helping people overcome them. I'm committed to community care. Are you?
