Have you made a list or notes on whumpy Hallmark and if so where?🥺
You know what, I haven't yet! Let me do that for ya now. And if anyone wants to add their favs please do so!
A Gift To Remember: Darcy (Ali Liebert) hits Aiden (Peter Porte) while riding her bike and he gets knocked out and loses his memory. It’s pretty good.
Love on the Sidelines : Laurel (Emily Kinney) is a struggling fashion designer who finds herself with a job as a personal assistant for Danny (John Reardon), a quarterback sidelined with an broken ankle. Danny is on crutches for most of the movie and is recovery from his injury.
Spirit of Christmas: A young lawyer (Jen Lilley) finds romance with a spirit (Thomas Beaudoin) that takes the form of a human 12 days before Christmas. He was murdered and there are flashbacks to him being attacked and killed.
Christmas Homecoming: Stars Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson from SG1!!) as an Army Captain recovering from an injury in battle. He's got a broken leg and suffers from survivors guilt and ptsd.
Hailey Dean Mysteries: Deadly Estate for some good poisoning whump of a medical examiner. You want unconscious? medically induced coma? respirator? bedside vigils? worry? waking up with a twitching hand? walking down the hospital floor holding onto their iv pole? Then this is the movie for you!
Love Blossoms: one small part when the main guy, Declan, gets sick with a cold during the movie. It’s kind of cute but the rest of the movie's got nothing.
Second Chances: "A badly injured leg forces fireman Jeff, who lost his father in a fire as a young boy, to rent a ground floor room during his recovery. Thus he moves in with Jenny, a 911 emergency call center operator, and her two young children, Luke and Elsie, who soon dote on him as an ideal substitute father and try matching him with their mother."
My Gal Sunday: Henry (Cameron Mattheson) gets shot in the beginning of the movie.
Signed Sealed Delivered Lost Without You: Oliver goes on a hike with his father. His dad trips and gets a seemingly innocuous injury on his leg but the two of them get lost in the woods and the injury turns out to be life threatening.
A Godwink Christmas Miracle of Love: Eric (Alberto Frezza) is run over by a plow near the end of the film. There's lots of surgery, worry, hospital stuff.
Retreat to Paradise: "Jordan is recovering from a shoulder injury and his grumpiness tempts Ellie, his carer, to leave him to his misery. But will romance finally blossom?"
The Christmas Waltz: Roman (Will Kemp) hits his head due to slipping on an icy sidewalk and has to go to hospital
Taking a Shot at Love: "Sparks fly between a ballet instructor and a professional hockey player as she tries to help him recover from the same injury that sidelined her dancing career." It's not got a lot of whump but it is about a hockey player in rehab.
Martha's Vineyard Mysteries series: The whole series. Jesse Metcalfe's character Jeff was shot on a previous case and the bullet is still in lodged in his back and it causes him pain a lot AND he continually has nightmares about the incident. It's great.
Mystery 101: Killer Timing: Travis (Kristopher Polaha) gets blown up and even though the aftermath doesn't last long its still wonderful. He gets knocked out, there's an ambulance and hospital scene (kinda), worried family members.
Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater: Maggie O'Donnell (Ashley Williams) accidentally breaks Lucas Cavelli (Niall Matter)'s arm while carrying a Christmas Tree and offers him a room to stay in when he can't find a hotel room cause she feels guilty.
A Timeless Christmas: Charles Whitley (Ryan Paevey) passes out in 1903 and wakes up in 2020.
Aurora Teagarden A Bundle of Trouble: Martin Bartell (Yannick Bisson) gets shot in the shoulder
Christmas on the Range: Clint McCree (Nicholas Gonzalez) is attacked and beaten up pretty badly.
Mix Up in the Mediterranean: Josh (Jeremy Jordan)'s twin brother Julian gets hurt and can’t do a cooking competition so Josh takes over.
The Christmas Cure: Mitch (Steve Byers) falls off ladder and gets a concussion
Love's Christmas Journey: Sheriff Aaron Davis (Greg Vaughan) gets shot in the leg while chasing a robber. His injury is bad and gets infected. He gets a fever and is rescued by an old man who cares for him. The wound needs cauterizing and he suffers fever, chills, and more.
Hearts in the Game: Diego Vasquez (Marco Grazinni) is a hot shot baseball pitcher who has a panic attack during a game which costs the team the game. Turns out it was triggered by the anniversary of his moms death and he has another panic attack later in the movie as well.
Fourth Down in Love is about an athlete who is sidelined by an injury. Broken ribs I think?
Rip in Time: Another fun time travel movie. Rip (Niall Mater) gets knocked out at least once.
Three Wise Men and a Baby: Paul Campbell's character has social anxiety and has a sort of panic attack in the park at the beginning of the movie.
Jolly Good Christmas: Will Kemp's character falls into a frozen river and he comes out shaking and shivering and she gets him a blanket and tea and he needs a hot shower.
That's all I've got for right now. The bolded ones have the best whump in my opinion so definitely check those out first :) Love's Christmas Journey and the Martha's Vineyard Mysteries are A+ whump hallmark movies. Do those first ;)

Looks like it's going to be a Sharma family reunion
Tumblr media
Georgia Sharma is back in Emmerdale to ruffle feathers on the eve of her son Jai’s wedding to Laurel.
Originally played by Trudie Goodwin, the role will now be played by former EastEnders actress, Lin Blakley, who is delighted to be joining Emmerdale.
Known for speaking her mind, both her ex-husband Rishi, played by Bhasker Patel, and the soon to be married couple Laurel, played by Charlotte Bellamy and Jai, played by Chris Bisson are instantly at the mercy of her harsh opinions.
With the wedding day looming and the rift between Rishi and Jai showing no signs of abating, will Georgia be able to heal this fractured family?
Producer Kate Brook explains “'We're thrilled to have an actor of Lin's calibre step into the role of the formidable Georgia. A force to be reckoned with, she'll have a secret for the Sharma family that could potentially blow their world apart".
Actress Lin Blakley commented: “How lucky am I to play such a strong character as Georgia. So different from roles I’ve played of late. I have enjoyed every single minute. Gorgeous cast and crew!! And the gorgeous Dales. Thank you Emmerdale.”
It sounds like she's already finished filming though...
and I'm sure the secret is that Rishi's brother is Jai's bio dad and the cousin is his (half) brother.

HARTFORD WOLF PACK TEAM BUILDING CONTINUES
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The always difficult off-season of team preparation work for the entire New York Rangers organization, including the Hartford Wolf Pack, continues. The Rangers signed undrafted left-winger Sahil Panwar on Monday. The 6’0, 195-pounder was inked to a one-year AHL standard player contract and will start training camp in Hart City. Sahil, in the Hindu dialect, means "leader." He is the second South Asian background player the Wolf Paack have had on their roster. The first is now the assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Manny Malhotra. Panwar, 21, just finished his junior career in the OHL. He played in 68 OHL games last season. He appeared in his first 34 games with the Peterborough Petes, registering 17 points with 10 goals, and was future Wolf Pack Brennan Othmann's teammate. Then, following a trade to the Hamilton Bulldogs, a former AHL city (just relocated to Brantford because of arena renovations next season), Panwar skated in 34 games and registered 52 points with 21 goals. He was named OHL Player of the Week twice. The first came from January 23rd through the 29th and then again from March 6th through the 12th. In 199 career OHL games between the Bulldogs, Petes, Flint (MI) Firebirds, and London Knights, Panwar amassed 124 points with 54 goals with 70 assists. The native of Mississauga, Ontario, migrated all over North America because of his father’s job. Panwar first was in Montreal, then San Jose, and then headed to Southern California. While there, he played in the LA Jr. Kings U-14/U-16 teams under the guidance of former Wolf Pack great Derek Armstrong. He played with Quinn and Blake Emerson, the twin sons of ex-Hartford Whaler Nelson Emerson. The Henderson Silver Knights, Brendan Bisson, skated with Panwar, who has a younger brother Jordan, an incoming freshman at Colorado College (NCHC). Both are sons of NHL player agent Pat Bisson, a coach, and founder of organized hockey in Southern California. Calgary Wranglers (AHL) goalie Dustin Wolf, last year’s regular season Les Cunningham MVP, was with them as well. Panwar had just three points with two goals in four OHL playoff games with the Bulldogs. A year ago, he had 19 playoff games with the Firebirds with seven points, his only other junior playoff experience. He also recently attended the New York Rangers 2023 Development Camp as a free-agent invitee. Panwar was a depth signee who will likely be sent to the Rangers' organizations' newly announced Double AA affiliate, the Cincinnati (OH) Cyclones. As of now, the team has 24 roster spots allocated. Three more players have signed overseas, making it a total of 48. Sam Anas, formerly of Quinnipiac University (ECACHL), the defending national collegiate champions from the Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears, signs with Dynamo Minsk (Belarus-KHL). Andy Andreoff and his 37 goals leave the Bridgeport Islanders to sign with Sibir Novosibirsk (Russia-KHL). Three of the last four AHL European signees were with Russian-based KHL teams. The ongoing war of unprovoked aggression/invasion of Ukraine, human rights violations galore and state-sanctioned kidnapping and mysterious deaths occur, was supposed to be off-limits by the NHL and, by extension, the AHL, but evidently, not so much. Another signee to Belarus is ex-Pack Kodie Curran, who leaves Metallurg Magnitgorsk (Russia-KHL) signs with Dynamo Minsk. Zach Fucale was another member of the Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears, joining recent signee ex-Pack/Ranger Vitali Kravtsov and goalie ex-Pack Adam Húska, who Torpedo Novgorod just re-signed. Ex-Pack Ryan Sproul re-signs for a fifth year with Kunlun Red Star (China-KHL) and will likely play for their national team at the World Championship. Rearguard Logan Day, a very solid performer in Hershey’s championship Calder Cup run, is talking with AHL and KHL teams but will very likely re-sign with the Bears. One Bridgeport Islander forward is likely to play with the independent Chicago Wolves. Chis Terry, as well as another ex-Pack captain, and UCONN Husky (AHA) Cole Schneider, who was also last year’s captain in Milwaukee with the Admirals, heads down I-70. At its recent annual league meeting, the ECHL mandated a 32-team league to meet the NHL (long sought-after) equilibrium of 32 teams at the NHL, AHL, and ECHL levels. They were looking at Athens, GA, and another unnamed market. The league announced its 29th franchise with majority owners of Tim Tebow, the former football and baseball player, and Hodges Management Group, LLC., CEO David Hodges. They will play in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, beginning in the 2024-25 season. The yet unnamed team will play at the brand-new Blue Event Center in the South Lake Tahoe District and will help ECHL teams in the Mountain Division, Idaho (Boise), Utah (Salt Lake City), Allen (TX), Kansas City (MO), Wichita (KS), Rapid City (SD) and Tulsa (OK). The NHL affiliation will be announced in February 2024. Tebow has been involved with ECHL as a minority owner with the Jacksonville Icemen, the former Double AA affiliate of the Rangers/Wolf Pack, and the Savannah (GA) Ghost Pirates under the aegis of Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, the operating company for all three entities. Tebow's athletic history dates back to high school when he won the Florida HS Class 4A title in 2005.  He went on to Florida to play Division I football, where as a sophomore, he won the Heisman Trophy in 2007. He won National titles in 2006 and 2008 and was voted into the College Football Hall-of-Fame in January. Despite being a first-round draft choice, he had a short NFL career, and he never fit the scout's pre-conceived parameters. All he did was throw touchdowns. His pro career highlight came as a Denver Bronco. It was the first play in the OT win over Pittsburgh when he completed an 80-yard pass play-and-catch-plays to Demaryius Thomas for a 29-23 win on January 8, 2012. Tebow had unsuccessful tryouts with the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets. Like Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson before him, he tried his hand at baseball. His inability to hit a curveball derailed his attempt to play in the major leagues. His minor pro ball career lasted five years. He played in the Mets' system, making it as high as their Double AA Eastern League team in Binghamton, and played against the Hartford Yard Goats. He ended his career at the Triple AAA level in Syracuse in 2021. He is one of the owners of the USL (United Soccer League) Jacksonville franchise. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

Sir Alexander Mackenzie (or MacKenzie, Scottish Gaelic: Alasdair MacCoinnich; 1764 – 12 March 1820) was a Scottish explorer known for accomplishing the first east to west crossing of America north of Mexico in 1793, which preceded the more famous Lewis and Clark Expedition by 12 years.
The Mackenzie River is named after him, the longest river system in Canada and the second longest in North America.  Mackenzie was born in Luskentyre House in Stornoway on Lewis. He was the third of the four children born to Kenneth 'Corc' Mackenzie (1731–1780) and his wife Isabella MacIver, from another prominent mercantile family in Stornoway. When only 14 years old, Mackenzie's father served as an ensign to protect Stornoway during the Jacobite rising of 1745. He later became a merchant and held the tack of Melbost; his grandfather being a younger brother of Murdoch Mackenzie, 6th Laird of Fairburn.
Educated at the same school as Colin Mackenzie, he sailed to New York City with his father to join an uncle, John Mackenzie, in 1774, after his mother died in Scotland.[6] In 1776, during the American War of Independence, his father and uncle resumed their military duties and joined the King's Royal Regiment of New York as lieutenants. By 1778, for his safety as a son of loyalists, young Mackenzie was either sent, or accompanied by two aunts, to Montreal. By 1779 (a year before his father's death at Carleton Island]), Mackenzie had a secured apprenticeship with Finlay, Gregory & Co., one of the most influential fur trading companies in Montreal, which was later administered by Archibald Norman McLeod. In 1787, the company merged with the North West Company. 1789 Mackenzie River expedition to the Arctic Ocean.
On behalf of the North West Company, Mackenzie traveled to Lake Athabasca where, in 1788, he was one of the founders of Fort Chipewyan. He had been sent to replace Peter Pond, a partner in the North West Company. From Pond, he learned that the First Nations people understood that the local rivers flowed to the northwest. Acting on this information, he set out by canoe on the river known to the local Dene First Nations people as the Dehcho, (Mackenzie River) on 3 July 1789, following it to its mouth in the hope of finding the Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean. As he ended up reaching the Arctic Ocean on 14 July, it is conjectured that he named the river "Disappointment River" as it did not lead to Cook Inlet in Alaska as he had expected. The river was later renamed the Mackenzie River in his honor.

1792–93 Peace River expedition to the Pacific Ocean
In 1791, Mackenzie returned to Great Britain to study the new advance in the measurement of longitude. Upon his return to Canada in 1792, he set out once again to find a route to the Pacific. Accompanied by two native guides (one named Cancre), his cousin, Alexander MacKay, six Canadian voyageurs (Joseph Landry, Charles Ducette, Francois Beaulieux, Baptiste Bisson, Francois Courtois, Jacques Beauchamp) and a dog simply referred to as "our dog", Mackenzie left Fort Chipewyan on 10 October 1792, and traveled via the Pine River to the Peace River. From there he traveled to a fork on the Peace River arriving 1 November where he and his cohorts built a fortification that they resided in over the winter. This later became known as Fort Fork.
Mackenzie left Fort Fork on 9 May 1793, following the route of the Peace River. He crossed the Great Divide and found the upper reaches of the Fraser River, but was warned by the local natives that the Fraser Canyon to the south was unnavigable and populated by belligerent tribes. He was instead directed to follow a grease trail by ascending the West Road River, crossing over the Coast Mountains and descending the Bella Coola River to the sea. He followed this advice and reached the Pacific coast on 20 July 1793, at Bella Coola, British Columbia, on North Bentinck Arm, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean. Having done this, he had completed the first recorded transcontinental crossing of North America north of Mexico, 12 years before Lewis and Clark. He had unknowingly missed meeting George Vancouver at Bella Coola by 48 days.
He had wanted to continue westward out of a desire to reach the open ocean, but was stopped by the hostility of the Heiltsuk people. Hemmed in by Heiltsuk war canoes, he wrote a message on a rock near the water's edge of Dean Channel, using a reddish paint made of vermilion and bear grease, and turned back east.
Tumblr media
The inscription read: "Alex MacKenzie / from Canada / by land / 22d July 1793" (at the time the name Canada was an informal term for the former French territory in what is now southern Quebec and Ontario). The words were later inscribed permanently by surveyors. The site is now Sir Alexander Mackenzie Provincial Park and is designated a First Crossing of North America National Historic Site. In 2016, Mackenzie was named a National Historic Person.
In his journal Mackenzie recorded the Carrier language for the first time. In 1801 the journals of his exploratory journeys were published. He was knighted for his efforts in the following year and served in the Legislature of Lower Canada for Huntingdon County, from 1804 to 1808.
In 1812 Mackenzie, then aged 48, returned to Scotland, where he married 14-year-old Geddes Mackenzie, heiress of Avoch.
They had two sons and a daughter. Her grandfather, Captain John Mackenzie of Castle Leod (great-grandson of George Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Seaforth), purchased the estate of Avoch with money left to him by his first cousin and brother-in-law, Admiral George Geddes Mackenzie. Lady Mackenzie's father was a first cousin of the father of George Simpson, Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company. The Mackenzies lived between Avoch and London. He died in 1820 of Bright's disease, at an age of 56 (his exact date of birth unknown). He is buried near Avoch on the Black Isle.

Frédéric Chopin
Who: Frédéric François Chopin (born Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin)
What: Composer
Where: Polish, active in France and the UK
When: March 1, 1810 - October 17, 1849
Tumblr media
Chopin is one of the most famous names in music to the point that an incredibly unmusical cretin like me is well aware of him. He is one of the quintessential musicians of the Romantic era and was piano virtuoso.  Over 230 compositions of his survive to this day, many of them recognizable to an international audience and acclaim. At the very least, if you are in the Western world (or at least if you have watched something produced in the West that contains a death in it), you know one of his pieces: "Piano Sonata No. 2", better known as the "Funeral March".
Some other 19th century hits include: "Étude Op. 10, No. 12 in C minor 'Revolutionary'", "Waltz in D-flat major, Op. 64, No. 1, 'the Minute Waltz'", "Życzenie (A Young Girl's Wish), Op. 74, No. 1", and literally over 200 others, many recognizable to the modern lay listener.
Probable Orientation: Aroace or (arguably) had romantic feelings for George Sand
While I had a hard time pinning down his romantic orientation Chopin's sexual orientation was pretty easy. He is another famous virgin (if you will forgive the term) and baffled friends and fans alike in his chastity. He was, with the exception of maybe Queen Elizabeth I the easiest historical figure on the list.  Not only were his sexual exploits (i.e. lack thereof) a popular topic of speculation he did have a few things to say about it. He refused sexual advances from all angles, much to the confusion of the people he spurned.  Often the questions of Franz Liszt and George Sand are raised, there is no evidence he had any romantic or sexual contact with Liszt, maybe a crush or squish at most.
Sand is a more complicated issue.  George Sand was a French author and in her day more famous and well loved than Victor Hugo or Honore de Balzac.  But just pegging down Sand's gender is tricky in a modern context.*  While she is referred to as a woman her contemporary, Victor Hugo, argued Sand "cannot determine whether she is male or female. I entertain a high regard for all my colleagues, but it is not my place to decide whether she is my sister or my brother.”. So if Chopin was romantically entangled with Sand it is impossible to say whether that would make him gay or straight or if gender even factored into his interest.
And it is difficult to say if Sand and Chopin were romantically involved or if that was read into their relationship. Chopin seemed to say they were not.
Sand herself was probably bisexual and had many lovers over her life. Chopin is listed as one of them, but Sand noted that it was not typical and certainly not physical. It's not even clear if Chopin's feelings were anything more than platonic.
While his romantic orientation might be unclear his sexual orientation is not. Quotes straight from Chopin himself close the issue of his sexual orientation pretty firmly, however:
"My[,] Scotswomen are kind...They are kind, but so boring that the Lord preserve them! - Every day I get letters, and answer none of them; and wherever I go, they come after me if they can. Perhaps that has given someone the notion that I am getting married; but there really has to be some kind of physical attrait [attraction], and the unmarried one is too much like me...Friendship is all very well, but gives no right to anything further. I have made that clear.
"Even if I could fall in love with someone, as I should be glad to do, still I would not marry…
"Anyhow, I don't need to write you all this, for you know how I think - [crossed out]. So I don't think at all of a wife, but of home, of my Mother, my Sisters. May God keep them in His good thoughts. Meanwhile, what has become of my art?...
"I am not complaining to you, but since you have asked, I explain to you that I am nearer to a coffin than to a marriage bed…"
-Chopin letter to Wojciech Grzymala, October 1848
"...Mrs. Lyschinska says that Chopin was gallant to all ladies alike, but thinks that he has no heart. She used to tease him about women, saying, for instance, that Miss [Jane] Sterling was a particular friend of his. He replied that he had no particular friends among the ladies, that he gave to all an equal share of his attention…
"'Not even George Sand then,' she asked 'is a particular friend?'
"'Not even George Sand,' was the reply."
-Frederick Niecks, Chopin (1888) quoting a friend of Chopin
*Sand was AFAB in an era before transgender people were recognized. She went by female pronouns and as far as I can tell referred to herself as a woman, but who can say what she would do today. She acted out male gender roles, and often wore "male" clothing, although Sand argued this was because the clothing was sturdier and cheaper than what a noblewoman were supposed to wear at the time (certainly true).  She went into male spaces and carried out male roles. She went by George Sand (her male pen name) rather than her birth name even off the page.

While the federal government said Thursday it will resume executing death-row inmates, that policy change will have little effect on convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s case in the short-term, according to local attorneys and legal scholars.
Tsarnaev was sentenced to death in 2015 for detonating a bomb amid Marathon spectators, becoming the first terrorist condemned to death by a jury in the post-9/11 US. But when that happened, the Justice Department was operating under a de facto moratorium on executions because of a review of federal death penalty policy.
That review has been completed, Attorney General William Barr said Thursday, and it has cleared the way for executions to resume.
Tsarnaev has appealed his conviction and death sentence. Since the appeal is still pending, the policy change holds little significance for his case at the moment, according to Daniel Medwed, a professor at Northeastern University School of Law.
“That is going to take a while to unfold,” said Medwed of the appeal.
After that appeal, Tsarnaev will be able to seek review from the US Supreme Court, and after that, he will have the opportunity to file a petition to challenge the sentence in federal district court, according to Medwed, who teaches criminal law and evidence.
“He has at a minimum three litigation procedures available before an execution date would even matter,” said Medwed.
According to Medwed, it would likely be “at least several years before there is any realistic possibility of a meaningful” execution date.
D. Christopher Dearborn, a professor who teaches criminal procedure and trial practice at Suffolk University Law School, had similar sentiments, saying he did not think Thursday’s developments would “have a huge impact” on Tsarnaev’s case.
“He’s still got a bunch of procedural steps to go,” said Dearborn. “The case is a long way from over.”
Dearborn found the timing of the death penalty announcement “to be a little suspicious.”
“I think a cynical person would say it’s [President] Trump playing to his base again,” he said.
Trump supports the death penalty.
For Tsarnaev’s legal defense, Dearborn thought there were arguments to be made regarding pre-trial publicity possibly tainting jurors and the choice of venue for the trial.
In their 500-page brief filed in the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, Tsarnaev’s taxpayer-funded legal team argued that the case should not have been tried in Boston and that the presiding judge allowed jurors to serve who appeared to have lied during the selection process.
Tsarnaev’s lawyers at trial admitted his role in the attack, which killed three people and wounded more than 260 others, but attempted to portray his older brother and co-assailant, Tamerlan, who died in a confrontation with police days after the blasts, as the dominant leader of the plot.
The brothers also killed an MIT police officer while they were on the run.
In another case, a federal jury in Massachusetts condemned admitted serial killer Gary Lee Sampson to death in 2017 for a weeklong crime spree that left three people dead in two states in July 2001.
State courts in Massachusetts struck down the death penalty laws in the early 1980s and the last executions in the state were in the late 1940s. But Tsarnaev and Sampson were charged with federal crimes that allow capital punishment; in Sampson’s case, it was the crimes of carjacking resulting in death.
Martin G. Weinberg, a Boston criminal defense attorney, said in the short-term, Thursday’s news is a nonfactor for Tsarnaev.
“But in the longer term, it’s a very real and imperilling factor if his appeals are not successful,” he said.
The average capital defendant, said Weinberg, “has a decade of litigation before even becoming eligible for this irrevocably draconian punishment.”
On Thursday, Barr, the attorney general, instructed the Bureau of Prisons to schedule executions starting in December for five men, all accused of murdering children.
Although the death penalty remains legal in 30 states, executions on the federal level are rare. Since the federal death penalty was restored in 1988, the government has put to death only three defendants, with the last one being executed in 2003.
In 2014, following a botched state execution in Oklahoma, President Barack Obama directed the Justice Department to conduct a broad review of capital punishment and issues surrounding lethal injection drugs.
According to Weinberg, the change in federal policy represents a “step that reverses all the illumination of the last decades that demonstrates the system is not perfect and that innocent people are on death row.”
“Mistakes are made and to extinguish the potential to reverse a mistake is just horrifying,” he said.
Barry J. Bisson, another Boston criminal defense attorney, said there are many unanswered questions about the new federal policy.
Barr has approved a new procedure for lethal injections that replaces a three-drug cocktail with a single drug, pentobarbital. The government, said Bisson, is risking “making people lab rats who are put to death.”
“We have no idea much is needed to execute someone,” he said. “We could have a lot of botched executions.”
Bisson expected there to be legal challenges questioning if the new policy constituted cruel and unusual punishment. He wouldn’t be surprised if the issue landed before the Supreme Court, he said.
By the time Tsarnaev has exhausted his legal options, there could be a different federal death penalty policy.
“It may not affect his case at all,” said Bisson.

7 huge Emmerdale fan theories that will blow your mind
What's next for the villagers? The superfans have some ideas.
Emmerdale fan theories, Cain Dingle, Robert Sugden, Moira Dingle.
In recent months, Emmerdale has really gained momentum. With new arrivals, flashback surprises during the special Big Night Out episodes, heartbreaking and hard-hitting storylines for Victoria and Lisa and, of course, the gripping twists in abusive Maya's downfall – it's been exciting stuff.
We all know one sign of a great soap storyline is if it gets fans talking. Currently, Emmerdale has a wealth of fan theories about what might happen next. Social media has been rife with speculation and we've put together some of the best theories for you to ponder over. Do they sound probable or are they way off the mark?
1. Victoria will give her baby to Robron
Victoria Barton confides in Moira Dingle in Emmerdale
ITV
One of the biggest Emmerdale theories of the moment centres around the outcome of Victoria's pregnancy after her horrific rape. As this storyline has played out in parallel to Robert and Aaron's struggling surrogacy plans, fans have put two and two together and speculated that Vic will give her baby to Robron.
While we know Victoria is pregnant, not much has been said yet about whether she plans to go ahead and have the baby. With brother Robert desperate to have a child with his husband Aaron, could Victoria's tragedy have an unexpected outcome for all three of them?
In truth, we have our doubts on this one, as it wasn't so long ago that Victoria was desperate for a baby herself, so we'll just have to wait and see what she decides...
I'm wondering if Victoria will have her baby and give it to Robron #emmerdale

Robert and Aaron are going to bring up Victoria’s baby aren’t they #emmerdale

2. Maya has groomed other boys
Maya Stepney in the woods in Emmerdale
ITV
Ever since manipulative Maya began worming her way into Jacob's affections, viewers have wondered whether she has done this before. She might have protested her innocence to the police and Jacob's loved ones, but her efforts to groom him have shown a clever and vindictive woman at work. Could it be that there are other victims of Maya out there? Could they be the cause of her downfall?
Viewers were quick to pick up on ex-husband Liam Cavanagh's reaction to her arrest and after all, it was Leanna who tried to warn the villagers what Maya was like long before we saw her true colours. Will it emerge that Maya has done this before?
Now it's out in the open it wouldn't surprise me if it turns out that Maya has done this before. #Emmerdale
— Penn Wooding (@BrixhamUK) May 22, 2019
Going to guess that this grooming #Emmerdale storyline will finally end with the revelation that Maya has done this before and that Maya isn’t her name.
Yes, I watch Emmerdale. 🐏🐄🐓

3. Laurel and Jai set to be Emmerdale's next big romance
Charlotte Bellamy as Laurel Thomas in Emmerdale
ITV
Forget Robron, Coira or Vanity – could Emmerdale's next biggest ship be Jaurel? After Laurel's disastrous affair with Bob, are producers lining up her next romance with another unlikely admirer? Fans think they've spotted sparks in the Sharma sweet factory between Jai and Laurel, and they've certainly been spending more time together in recent months.
Since Jai's last relationship with con artist Nell ended badly, he's been on his own and even actor Chris Bisson expressed interest in Jai having a bit of happiness. What do you reckon, could that be with Laurel?
Anyone else getting the feeling that Laurel and Jai are going to end up together? #Emmerdale
— Anzi (@Monkey_Moom) April 10, 2019
Is it me or are we getting Jai & Laurel vibe? 😊 #Emmerdale

Think there's going to be a Jai and Laurel romance.. #Emmerdale @ITV

4. Moira or Cain will cheat
Moira Dingle in Emmerdale
It hasn't gone unnoticed that things have been strained between Cain and Moira of late. With Cain spending more time with ex-flame Harriet, and Moira left to confide in new farmhand Nate, even the couple themselves seem to be aware they've hit a rough patch. With frostiness at Butler's and each of them spending more alone time with others, could this be a sign that Coira are doomed to split?
Theories circulating have predicted Cain might return to the arms of Harriet again or Nate's attraction to an older woman might mean he'll bunk up with Moira.
But Coira fans might not need to worry too much yet as actor Jeff Hordley's recent interview on This Morning suggested Cain and Moira are solid. Unless this was just to throw us off the scent...
I really don't understand where emmerdale going with the Cain/Harriet and Moira/Nate. I just know they love messing the Cain and Moria fans around. I just want them to have a decent storyline. Not in involving exs. I'm not worried about Coria they love each other ☺☺☺#Emmerdale
— Royal Princess Alice Rinderette 😘😘😘😘😊😊 (@WoodhouseAlice) May 16, 2019
Still can't help but feel the writers of emmerdale are going to split Coira up .Cain getting close to Harriet and then Moira cosies up to Nate not feeling positive but normally turns out ok

5. Is Mandy Dingle dying?
Chas Dingle attacks Mandy Dingle in Emmerdale
ITV
You might think the Dingles have had enough tragedy in recent times, but that doesn't stop fans speculating that there's more on the way. When Mandy Dingle returned earlier this year, she hinted that she hadn't revealed her biggest secret, and left without another word. While some fans predicted that her son Vinny could be Paddy's, others had more heartbreaking ideas.
Could Mandy's real secret be a terminal illness? Was her brief visit to Emmerdale to set up a later story where she makes peace with her family and comes home to die? Whatever Mandy's secret, we'd love to see Lisa Riley back in the village – her fun return was all too brief.
Is Mandy ill?? #Emmerdale

6. Jamie's mystery caller is Joe Tate
Alexander Lincoln as Jamie Tate in Emmerdale
ITV
There's no better way to get soap fans speculating than by throwing in a mystery phone call. Newcomer Jamie Tate has so far seemed nice as pie compared to his mother Kim, despite being embroiled in a car accident in his first week. Nevertheless, Jamie seemed clean cut until we saw he was hiding a secret – twelve missed calls.
Fans' thoughts immediately turned to Joe, once presumed dead and now AWOL somewhere in the world. Could it be him who's trying to get in touch with his estranged uncle? Or is there someone else desperate to get in touch with Jamie?
I bet you that’s joe ringing jamie #emmerdale
— 🌚 (@nottjayy) May 16, 2019
Did anyone else notice Jamie having missed calls from an unknown number? It's Joe Tate!!! He's coming home! 😀
— Dan (@DanONeil95) May 16, 2019
7. Adam Barton will make a return to the village
Victoria and Adam Barton fear Pete has threatened their adoption chances in Emmerdale
After Victoria's rape ordeal, we've only just begun to watch her heartbreaking story. But some viewers are already predicting there will be light at the end of the tunnel. Could a return of Victoria's ex-husband Adam Barton give her back some happiness?
We've seen how much Victoria misses him and with actor Adam Thomas reportedly keen to return, we wouldn't rule it out. But just what would this mean for Moira and her killer secret?
@emmerdale I think Victoria will keep the baby and Adam returns #Emmerdale
— Tam LizAnn ODriscoll (@tamlizann) May 9, 2019
Victoria will give the baby to Robert and Aaron and go in search of Adam her true love

Walter M. Miller, Jr.: A Canticle for Leibowitz (1959)
Introduction
Although A Canticle for Leibowitz was published as a book in 1959, one version of it was written earlier. The first section, also entitled “A Canticle for Leibowitz” (now “Fiat Homo” [“Let There Be Man”]) appeared in 1955, the second section appeared as “And the Light Is Risen” (“Fiat Lux” [“Let There be Light”]) the next year, and the conclusion appeared in 1957 as “The Last Canticle” (“Fiat Voluntas Tua” [“Thy Will Be Done”]), all in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. When he reworked the material for the novel, Miller made substantial changes and additions. Although he published a few stories before and after, and wrote most of a sequel to Canticle, at his death this remained his only successful work. The sequel, Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman was almost finished when he committed suicide, and was completed by Terry Bisson and published in 1997. Canticle is widely considered a classic, has never been out of print, and is widely taught in science fiction courses.
Written during the height of 50s concern over the danger of nuclear war, Canticle was the most literarily successful science fiction novel written on the subject until Russell Hoban’s Riddley Walker (1980). Part of the novel’s success derives from its richly realized setting, a post-holocaust America where scraps of pre-war knowledge are gathered and preserved by a Catholic Church which no longer understands that knowledge. The novel takes for granted familiarity with the idea that after the fall of the Roman Empire, knowledge was preserved in Western Europe almost exclusively in small, isolated communities of priests and monks during a centuries-long dark age, recopied by men who often understood little of the ancient manuscripts of which they were the custodians.
There have been scores of novels set after a nuclear war in a neo-Medieval setting, but none so lovingly developed on the basis of a detailed study of the original Middle Ages. Miller remained a Catholic through much his life, though in tension with the Church, (he turned bitterly against it toward the end, as is evident in Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horsewoman). Most SF is highly critical of religion when it touches on the subject at all; but Canticle is distinguished by its serious consideration of religious issues, even though it sometimes departs from orthodoxy. Miller obviously could not have anticipated Vatican II’s movement away from the use of Latin, and he imagines its revival in the new Dark Age, with the English of our age functioning only as an archaic ceremonial language.
The other most memorable feature of the books is the delightful portrait of the feckless brother Francis. Richly detailed characterization and real wit are both unusual in SF, and have helped to make this work a classic. “Fiat Homo” is clearly the strongest part of the work, which suffers to some degree as a novel from the very long time spans which separate each of its sections. Like The Martian Chronicles, it is well to remember that each section was composed separately and can still be read rewarding on its own.
Many of the following notes require looking up passages in the Bible. If you do not have a copy you can access searchable one at http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/efts/ARTFL/public/bibles/index.html. It offers both the Vulgate Latin version which Miller draws upon and the Revised Standard Version in English.

Asimov's Science Fiction (March/April 2017)
Tumblr media
Digging into my backlot of science fiction magazines. A mixture of verse and stories. I've only reviewed and rated the stories. This particular issue is the 40th Anniversary one! 3.8 out of 5 "Soulmates.com" by Will McIntosh Daniel wants someone to share his life with, to love and be loved by. When he meets Winnie through a dating app, he thinks she could be the one almost immediately. Emily, his former girlfriend and current best friend, is more suspicious, doing a deep dive on who Winnie could be. Which, considering they never meet in person despite Winnie being in Atlanta and Daniel in Athens, not that long a drive, is valid. Starts extremely slowly, assumingly to establish the characters. Not my favorite way as most writers don't do a good job at it. I'm not entirely certain that this is actually science fiction, despite the use of Artificial Intelligence. As to Daniel, I found him to be incredibly childish, blind, immature, and boring. He learned absolutely nothing from his experience. I struggled to complete this novella. 2.5 out of 5 "Number Thirty-Nine Skink" by Suzanne Palmer It started simply enough, an expedition designed to bring life in balance to an empty planet. Then the humans left suddenly, leaving Mike willingly behind with Kadey whose programming makes the creatures populating the area. When Mike dies of cancer, Kadey continues her work. Until the night something changes. Poor Kadey, struggling with loneliness, possibly incomplete programming, and the knowledge hidden from her regarding why the humans left. Sad, yes, but with a more hopeful ending that is also a beginning. Lovely story, so well written. 4.5 out of 5 "Three Can Keep a Secret..." by Bill Johnson & Gregory Frost A convoluted tale of assassins, misdirection, love, greed, and con-artistry with an almost noir feel to it. It's almost impossible to give a synopsis that isn't chockful of spoilers. The first person narrator isn't totally reliable, but still intriguing in what he shares. I loved this more than I expected with this strange little story. FYI, in case you don't know, the title is from an old saying. Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead. 4.5 out of 5 "The Ones Who Know Where They Are Going" by Sarah Pinsker A child must suffer so the city can be happy, or so they say. One particular child is taken from her mother, locked away in the dark with no social interaction beyond the delivery of food. As time passes, language is lost and memories of a happier time begin to fade. Then one day the door isn't shut tightly and the child gets out of the tiny dark room. She crawls up the stairs, each step bringing back a particular memory, heading for freedom. But at what cost? Rip my heart out, why don't you? Two and a half pages of the most gut-wrenching narrative. The tightly woven writing is painfully descriptive. And the ending! Oh, the ending. I just cannot deal with it. 5 out of 5 "Invasion of the Saucer-Men" by Dale Bailey Teenagers have been foiling alien invasions for some time. After all, the adults are either locked in their homes consuming television or would dismiss the very idea of aliens. The newest landing of a flying saucer bonds together teens out at the local make-out point. Per the author, his idea was to take the cheesy sci-fi and horror movie titles of the 1950s and treat the core idea with some emotional and thematic nuance. Here we have a group of teen archetypes, from the football star to the nerds to the beauty. There are also the followers that are always found in high school. This brings back memories of too many cheesy nights at the drive-ins in my county. I've always found my sympathies fell with the aliens most of the time, faced with humans whose first response to the unknown was always violence. Horrible ending to this story. Horrible. CW: extremely graphic attack. 3 out of 5 "Kitty Hawk" by Alan Smale After receiving word of her brother's death, Katharine Wriht travels from Ohio to North Carolina to help her other brother. Instead of Orville preparing to pack up for the trip home with his beloved
brother's body, he is trying to continue with the flight experiments that killed Wilbur. Katharine finds herself engaged in helping, even learning to fly herself. This is a complete AU of the Wright Brothers and the birth of flight, through World War I and the suffrage movement. The writing is evocative of the time period and the dangers of experimental flight. I don't know why it didn't click with me, but I struggled quite a bit in reading this imaginative tale. I can see others enjoying this greatly, just not me. 3 out of 5 "Cupido" by Rich Larson Marcel is a genius at chemistry. He came up with a way to make pheromones specific to the pair he's paid to bring together, either by one of the potential couple or by a third party. The majority of the money he charges goes to pay for his grandmother's colon cancer treatment. As word gets around, he finds himself moving to smaller cities to avoid identification. As yet, what he does isn't illegal. He didn't expect to find himself attracted to his potential mark. Frankly, I don't consider this to be science fiction at all. The science is already viable. Add the consent issues which would be called dubcon (dubious consent) and I'm too busy cringing to enjoy. In my mind, Marcel is anything but a hero. 3 out of 5 "A Singular Event in the Fourth Dimension" by Andrea M. Pawley Olive was removed from the reducer pile, adopted by a childless couple to help stave off loneliness. Now that the second grandmother is living with them and Mama was pregnant, Olive is worried that she will be sent back to the pile, no longer needed. A loving, imaginative little android who believes in fairy dust, even if the fairies never seem to do anything magical like in the stories. Love doesn't have to be limited to just humans or blood relations. Sweet and touching. 4.5 out of 5 "The Wisdom of the Group" by Ian R. MacLeod There are theories and studies about group-think, how certain groups can intuit a trend or coming situation without any real knowledge. With the right group, the members could get wealthy or probably save the world, depending on their inclination. Samuel has been part of such a group since brought in by his professor while still in university. Now, years later, Samuel is wealthy, has a liv-in lover, three dogs with unfortunate names, and a gorgeous house in Washington state. But something is wrong, something that seems to be originating from Samuel. The response is usually to cut the wrong out of the group. A complicated basis for a disturbing story. I had to sit on this one for a while in order to determine what I felt about it. Definitely strong writing, could almost be considered psychological horror. I don't know if I would ever say that I liked it, but I recognize the work done and the uniqueness of the story. 3.5 out of 5 "After the Atrocity" by Ian Creasey Abu Hameed, the terrorist behind the attack that left ten thousand people dead, has also died during interrogation. The solution? A machine that can make exact copies, complete with memories, of an individual. Violet Ruiz, operator and creator of the machine, even made a duplicate of herself in order to work 24/7. As Hameed's copies die during the enhanced interrogation, more copies are needed. Soon Violet II wonders about the ethical implications. Well thought out consideration of just how far a nation is willing to go in search of revenge wrapped in the disguise of intel. Patriot Act, enhanced interrogation the Greater Good, dismantling both Habeas Corpus and the Geneva Convention, anyone? 4 out of 5 "Goner" by Gregory Norman Bossert In order to explore space, humans had to be converted from flesh into nanotechnology based creatures. The pilots call themselves Goners. Char's best friend's father is a Goner. Already fascinated with the idea of flying, Char uses a sliver of Pilot Clark to begin changing. While this is complete in itself, the story also begs for more. What is happening to Char? Will he be allowed to live his dreams despite his age? S fascinating a concept. 3.5 out of 5 "We Regret the Error" by Terry
Bisson A series of news corrections from the future. So many corrections, even some corrections of corrections. Taken individually, these are amusing. Pieced together, there is a much deeper story playing out. Oh, and a nice dig at Disney's well-known history of not paying some of their artists for their work. 3 out of 5 "Tao Zero" by Damien Broderick Teenagers, incredibly smart ones, have unprotected sex after winning $370 million in the Mega Millions lottery. The celebration leads to a child, the narrator, and the money to try to trap the Tao, the Way that cannot be named, inside a machine. I tried, I really tried to read this without success. After rereading the first two pages over and over in an attempt to struggle through, I put the story aside, hoping to pick it back up when refreshed. Didn't work. DNF
