The Scroll with Seven Seals
1 And I saw on the right hand of the One sitting upon the throne a scroll, having been written inside and on the back, having been sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll, and to break its seals?”
3 And no one in heaven, nor upon the earth, nor under the earth, was able to open the scroll, nor to see it. 4And I was weeping loudly, because no one was found worthy to open the scroll, nor to see it.
The Lamb is Worthy
5 And one of the elders says to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has overcome to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 And I saw in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb standing as having been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God having been sent out into all the earth. 7 And He came and took it out of the right hand of the One sitting on the throne.
8 And when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls being full of incenses, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they are singing a new song, saying,
“Worthy are You to take the scroll and to open its seals, because You were slain, and You purchased to God by Your blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, 10 and You have made them a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reigna upon the earth.”
The Lamb Exalted
11 And I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, and of the living creatures, and of the elders; and their number was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying in a loud voice:
“Worthy is the Lamb having been slain, to receive the power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
13 And I heard every creature which is in heaven, and upon the earth, and under the earth, and on the sea, and everything in them, saying:
“To the One sitting on the throne, and to the Lamb, blessing and honor and glory and might to the ages of the ages.”
14 And the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen.” And the elders fell down and worshiped. — Revelation 5 | Berean Literal Bible (BLB) The Berean Literal Bible © 2016 by Bible Hub and Berean Bible. Using the Bible Dictionary, Bible Hub, and Google Maps
Using the Bible Dictionary, Bible Hub, and Google Maps
When you study the scriptures, what tools do you use to get the context for what you are studying? With Scripture Notes it’s really easy to get the background material for what you are reading about in the Bible. In this brief video, I demonstrate using the Bible Dictionary, Bible Hub with it’s timeline content, and then Google Maps to get a visual on what I learned from the Bible Dictionary.

Y'all, if you start getting into some form of mysticism or spirituality that quotes the Bible as its authority, you have no excuse for not hopping your butt over to Bible Hub or Bible Gateway to check the verse in context (reading the whole chapter is great, but reading the whole book/epistle is even better) to make sure it means what you're being told it means.
Also I super recommend checking out the work of Dr. Bart D. Erhman for an academic look into the history of early Christianity.

With the launch of @renegadepublishing’s code of conduct and formalized membership this week (as well as the shiny new DreamWidth hub!), I wanted to get some of my thoughts out there.
This has all been a project for some time now, and I don’t think anyone knew what it was going to turn into.
Renegade started with one man, @armoredsuperheavy, and grew into a movement that’s now 1,200+ and counting. He is the reason fanbinding came into the mainstream fandom consciousness the way it has, and I don’t see it going away anytime soon - it’s spreading faster than Tumblr’s weird ass chat function. Hundreds upon hundreds of books were made because of you, Ash; that’s a damn good legacy, imo.
But I digress - Renegade grew from one man to a handful of people in a little Discord server. The server grew. They started a Tumblr, and this is how it went for some time. When I joined, this is how it was - we were so excited to hit 500 members! But, surprisingly, for someone as terminally on Tumblr as I am - I actually discovered fanbinding through Instagram, then TikTok. I had to actively seek out fanbinding on Tumblr, because I knew it had to exist here if it was already on these mainstream platforms.
Nowadays, fanbinding is becoming increasingly controversial in some circles because of the commodification and commercialization that have taken root; the mantra I keep seeing is “Keep Fandom Free”. This seemed a self-evident truth to me; and I couldn’t understand why it felt like no one knew about Renegade, a league of fanbinders who believe in this very ideal.
In essence, it’s a two-pronged issue: fanbinding is rising in popularity (and controversy), but the advocates-for-free-resources community isn’t terribly visible. Renegade was tucked away on Tumblr, a hidden gem in a locked Discord. I felt like I had discovered buried treasure the day Ash sent me the link to join. So, an idea was birthed - to take Renegade to other platforms, to spread our message and introduce our gift economy ways - to shout from the rooftops about the free, incredible 88-page bible ASH wrote detailing every goddamned step on how to take a fic from AO3 and turn it into a physical book.
Once we got in the room to discuss what this would look like, we discovered we have lots of ideas. We have a community, and we’re all excited to build in it. To share and grow. To make it easier on the people who come after us, with guides and templates. We started thinking about events we could host; the Exchange and Binderary were birthed naturally in the Discord, and have grown in scope to include physical books mailed around the world, and free workshops coordinated and hosted for multiple timezones during the month of February. Fan Fiction Writer Appreciation Day, Banned Books Week, International Fanworks Day - the list goes on and on. More events that haven’t even been announced yet. More projects, ever churning to better our community.
The DreamWidth quickly became a hub to aggregate and host resources better than Tumblr could, to promote discussion and community in a gentler way than Discord was able to. But the controversy kept spinning across other swathes of fanbinding, and the question was raised - what do we believe in?
We are all so different and yet, so unified. We have members on 6 continents, who speak different languages, who belong to hundreds of different fandoms. But what, at it’s core, does it mean to be a part Renegade?
And so, the code of conduct was born.
A code of conduct is a set of standards, moral and ethical, that someone is expected to adhere to in order to interact with an organization. It’s not law - we’re not trying to police anyone, or tell them what to do. We’re telling people what we do - what we believe. There’s no punishment for disagreeing, nor should there be. The code is a mutable document written by members - and so it can be changed by members, and should be changed, as we grow and encounter new challenges. The safest hands are our own, right?
There will be push and pull on this document, but I think that’s a good thing. At the end of all of this, I’m excited for us to acknowledge our community values. I wear my Renegade Publishing badge with pride, because I’ve never seen another group of artists so supportive of each other, and generous with their knowledge. Ash has expounded upon this many a time, but Renegade has the feeling of old-school fandom that I’ve been missing. I haven’t felt this united with fandom since Mishapocalypse.
All jokes aside, I’m so glad I found Renegade. It’s brought so much to my life. Just last weekend, I met up with some local binders, and we had a little Renegade outing. Fandom friends, IRL, geeking out with each other over some books. Does it get any better than that?
Join the movement. Check out our resources! We’re excited to have you here.

Also boiling all Modern American Problems down to 'Christianity bad!' ignores so much of how the Enlightenment effected the West's view of the world, and how a lot of ideas that were later shoehorned into a social understanding of Christianity were purely secular in origin.
It ignores how common it is for modern American Christians to barely understand their bible and rely on popular, influencer-style books and videos for their daily dose of spirituality.
It ignores how actually listening to church fathers, saints, and theologians usually leads to a greater love for your fellow human beings, a will to do better towards them.
It ignores the fact that blaming the actions of evil and powerful people in the past and present on a single religion that fundamentally disagrees with those actions will inevitably end up hurting minorities who follow that religion--'oh, all christians are just evil and bad, so I'm gonna burn the local church which serves as a mutual aid hub in this impoverished community!'
It ignores so *much* about the world, and ends up not serving its own ends as well as it should because of that.

The Monthly Roundup
Okay, normally, this is just a free monthly post over on my Patreon, but I figured I should push this out into the wild as well, because this kind of stuff's always needed. Want this, and a bunch of weekly readings from a cursed tarot deck, media reviews, and other content including fiction and the occasional build post? Maybe consider adding me over there as well. Anyways, like I said, it's a monthly roundup- in this case a bigass collection of links and resources for folks interested in pursuing gender transition one way or another. And while a bunch of it is transfem specific and sometimes medical transition specific, because it's stuff I dug up while hunting down things for myself, there's also things in there good for anyone of any gender, and resources for legal/social transition as well. And this is long enough to deserve a cut for once, so...
Hey! What If *I'M* trans?
The Gender Dysphoria Bible- https://genderdysphoria.fyi/en Wondering if you're experiencing Gender Dysphoria? This may be a good place to start. Realize the GDB is slanted largely towards transfem folks, so it doesn't necessarily apply evenly to everyone, but it does cover a lot of ground that folks may identify with.
Trans Medical Resources
DIY HRT- https://diyhrt.cafe/index.php/Main_Page (for legal reasons, I'm going to tell you to at least try to see a licensed physician or endocrinologist before starting to DIY your own hormones, but keep in mind, I'm not your responsible adult, and if you don't choose to listen, that's on you) This is the main, best hub for sourcing and getting info on doing your own hormone therapy. Keep in mind, it's once again slanted towards feminizing methods, because testosterone is still a controlled substance in most of the world (which is bloody fucking stupid, but that's a rant for another time).
GALAP- The Gender Affirming Letter Access Project- https://thegalap.org/ While we may have new WPATH guidelines with the Soc 8 updates that dropped a little bit ago, most providers and insurers are still on outdated requirements that insist on letters from mental health providers for transgender-related care. Which can affect access to surgeries, HRT, and more. GALAP exists to connect folks with providers who'll give those letters,m in some cases free of charge even.
Gynecologist List- https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Djia_WkrVO3S4jKn6odNwQk7pOcpcL4x00FMNekrb7Q/htmlview This one's more for uterus-owners in general and less trans-specific, but giventhe number of folks with uteri who'd can end up with a hard time finding a willing doctor for some procedures, it's important for everyone. This is a Google database of hundreds of gynecologists, listed by location, willing to perform sterilization procedures with informed consent, without secondary authorization from anyone else. The list is patient-vetted, so your mileage may vary, but for those seeking sterilization and/or hysterectomies as part of their transition it may prove to be invaluable as a resource, because doctors willing to do this work can be few and rare in some areas.
Transfeminine Science- https://transfemscience.org/ Articles, journals and all sorts of researching into, well, just what the name says, transfeminizing science. A lot of medical professionals simply don't have knowledge in the field and are acting on what they learned in med school, which may be way out of date. If they're willing to listen, there's stuff in there to help bring them up to speed. Better yet, it;'s also a great resource to educate yourself so you can advocate for your own care a bit better.
Other Transition resources (legal, social, etc)
NCTE's ID GUIDE- https://transequality.org/documents The National Transgender Center for Equality's guide to changing your legal identity, in a handy format that lets you break it down by state or territory, or even federal documents (United States only, sorry.) and links to the right paperwork to use. Rainbow Passage- https://rainbowpassage.org/ It sucks that we need organizations like this in these times, but I'm glad to see there's people already stepping up to the task. Rainbow Passage is an organization dedicated to helping trans youth get out of trans-hostile states and relocate to safer areas. And if you can, volunteering for them is a great way to help improve safety for trans folk in general.
Seattle Voice Lab- https://www.seattlevoicelab.com/ if you've seen me on social media much lately, then you've seen me talking about this place. This is who I'm (through February and March at least) taking voice lessons through to feminize my own voice more. They also have a bunch of online resources, a discord server, and other help if you need to figure your own vocal chords out a bit better.
Strands For Trans- https://strandsfortrans.org/ Need a haircut, or color or other beauty services you're using for the first time ever as an out trans person and you're not sure where's going to be safe to go? Strands For Trans is the first comprehensive database of Aesthetics businesses for hair and everything, AND THEY VET THE BUSINESSES, to ensure your safety and comfort.
TLC's Life-Planning Guide- http://transgenderlawcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/TLC_Life-Planning-Documents-Transgender.pdf The Transgender Law Center put this guide together specifically for planning end-of-life details. Yes, it's a depressing and tragic thing, but protecting and making sure our identities are still properly preserved after we die is still just as an important part of what we're fighting as anything else is. This guide will help you with establishing a Living Will, controlling hospital visits, and setting up proper Powers of Attorney, so that nothing potentially falls back into the hands of people who might refuse to recognize who you truly are. (In many states, you can designate someone other than your next of kin to take charge of your body when you die (next of kin is defined by law, not by preference). If you need to do that, go to nolo.com and look up article on "[your state] funeral law" to get a rundown on if and how to do this.
Trans Media
The Digital Transgender Archive- https://www.digitaltransgenderarchive.net "The purpose of the Digital Transgender Archive (DTA) is to increase the accessibility of transgender history by providing an online hub for digitized historical materials, born-digital materials, and information on archival holdings throughout the world." (In short, this is one of several free libraries of trans history.)
Totally Trans- https://www.patreon.com/totallytrans/posts Hey, look at that, it's another Patreon! Except, no, wait, it's a podcast! Totally Trans looks at media both historical and modern with a transgendered lens. Sometimes it's silly fun, other times, it's great insights into queer and trans history, and all around it's a great show to add on whatever service you're already getting podcasts through- or you can hit the link above to help support them at the same time for early access.
Trans News, Blogs, and Notes
Erin In The Morning: https://www.erininthemorning.com/ Erin's newsletter runs almost daily these days, mostly with updates regarding trans legislation all around the US. It's a good way to stay up to date, but it can also be a drag these days, largely because it's practically just a constantly expanding list of bad news thanks to the GOP right now.
Stained Glass Woman: https://stainedglasswoman.substack.com/ aka Doc Impossible/Zoe. I first discovered her work and writing when WPATH released their new SOC 8 guidelines, because she was one of the few people that could make the thing actually make sense in non-legalese. But I subscribed andkeep following here for regular updates both because she presents a trans coming out narrative that was just a joy to read, and also covers interesting  news in the field of trans medicine from time to time. Definitely worth adding to your feed.
A Self Defense Study Guide for Trans Women and Gender Non-Conforming / Nonbinary AMAB Folks: https://www.silversprocket.net/2021/09/13/a-self-defense-study-guide-for-trans-women-and-gender-non-conforming-nonbinary-amab-folks/
This is, quite honestly, one of the best self-defense guides I've seen for gender-nonconforming folks (and one of the few, to be honest), short of private defense instruction. AND it's available to read in full for free at that link, or in print for just a 5$ donation. Go check it out.
Other general roundups
Grassroots GAC Resources- https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19kSzBLo_hjpiBjHN8tvK73sVHU25NKWjMau2vNl8uuM/edit#gid=778305468 Google spreadsheet of links in general, from therapy help and hrt assistance, to all sorts of other info, some of which are repeats from here, but there's also a bunch of others I haven't had time or opportunity to vet yet.

I think one thing I love about The Residents is that they were weird as fuck and didn't come from a place anybody expected: Shreveport fucking Louisiana. Being from the south myself, it's inspirational when true avant-garde weirdos emerge from the Bible Belt and actually make a dent in music, especially underground music.
As much as I love the music that comes out of major hubs like NYC, San Francisco, London, etc., it's nice to see what the hell else is going on in other areas of the world. Weird music can come from anywhere, at any place, and at any time. It just takes that one outcast (or a group of outcasts) making a ruckus for it to happen.

Jesus the True Vine
4 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. 5 I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. — John 15:4-5 | Majority Standard Bible (MSB) The Holy Bible, Majority Standard Bible is produced in cooperation with Bible Hub, Discovery Bible, OpenBible.com, and the Berean Bible Translation Committee. This text of God’s Word has been dedicated to the public domain. Cross References: Matthew 12:33; Matthew 13:21; John 6:56; John 15:16; 1 John 2:6

hii, could you pray that i actually start going to mass? i'm the only one in my family that believes in Catholicism (getting baptised in november!! so excited!) and while they do agree to take me to mass if i want to, i always feel a bit intimidated and end up not going :(, i think i would really benefit from going and spending time with God, so i could really use some prayers
thanks q lot ♡ have a blessed day 🕊
I will keep you in my prayers!
It can be intimidating especially if you are the only one going alone, and so new to it. My best advice is: don’t rush the process. You are not required to be perfect and know all that there is in order to go to Mass or to be baptized. The beauty of the Catholic faith is that we are always like students.
Sit in the back pews when you go and don’t let your worries scare you. No one should stop you at the doors (if they do it’s mean, find another Catholic Church). Sometimes a Mass won’t be perfect either, with distractions around us from people talking, babies and children crying, a cellphone accidentally not being on silent, maybe the homily isn’t so helpful or good, sometimes readers will read the wrong page or they may not say what page to read or sing, maybe the people around you won’t smile. Don’t worry.
Jesus is truly present body, blood, soul, and divinity in the consecrated Eucharist. He’s in that very tabernacle at the altar and waits there for you, He waits there in the Communion hosts and wine, He waits in the monstrance at Eucharistic Adoration. Jesus loves us so much He gave His life to pay for the penalty of our sins, and He loves you. If you feel intimidated, there is also livestreams of Mass you can go to online to help you get a better idea of the Mass. if you are in RCIA, definitely ask any questions you have and they will help ease any doubts or questions you bring up, and welcome you with open arms.
.//////////.//////////.//////////////////
Things I recommend that may help you (not to overwhelm you but to give you ideas):
- read the Bible (start with the Gospels of the New Testament). You don’t have to read big chunks but try a couple of verses a day. Try to read it slowly and place yourself into the story like a movie in your mind. This is a great way to meditate and pray on what is being said.
- Bible Hub is awesome for your phone.
- the Catechism of the Catholic Church is a great book that explains why we do what we do as Catholics—- even parts of the Mass. don’t be intimidated by its size. I use it as a reference book by opening the back index.
- try the Bible in a Year podcast by Fr. Mike Schmitz. He will read to you and help you see the Bible through a Catholic lense.
- listen to Relevant Radio. Download the app. Stays very close to the faith and they have past episodes you can listen to on a variety of topics!
- Watch past runs of Mother Angelica Live on YouTube. She was awesome at talking down to our level easy to understand.
- watch livestreams of Mass online.
- try sitting physically in the back of the church pews at Mass.
- try Mass at different times and locations. Sometimes that’s all we need is a change of pace, people, and scenery to help us connect better.
- if you have questions don’t be afraid to reach out to your Catholic priest. He’ll be happy to answer your questions.
- sometimes it can help us feel good if we invite friends, coworkers, or family to Mass with us. They don’t have to be Catholic to go with you either.
- if friends, coworkers, and family won’t go with you, I found a good way to find a sense of community in the church is seeing what events they do outside of Mass. Every parish is different. It can be as simple of coffee and donuts, a fish fry dinner, and a place and time to drop of food or clothing donations. Other events are longer like Bible studies, retreats, guest speakers, Rosary making, cultural events, volunteer events, etc etc. You may be surprised in who you meet!
- don’t forget self care. Take care of your health by getting good sleep, drink plenty of water, eat healthy, exercise, etc.
- don’t stop praying. You don’t need to do big complex prayers. Start small and simple.
- Eucharistic Adoration in person.
Remember that I love you and God loves you. May God bless you. 🙏🏻

The best compliments I've received-- "your writing makes me want to worship God more" "your work reminds me of the Bible; it has a surety to it" "I love how there's always a latent apocalypse behind your writing" "hearing that was a spiritual experience" -- all center on a quality in my writing which I believe is due to gifts given me in childhood. What some call Religious Fundamentalism -- whether it is or not, depends on where you're standing.
It is knowing that Jesus could return tomorrow. It is knowing that heaven and hell are real. It is cutting all the skeletons and Harry Potters out of the LEGO catalogue. It is wondering if that sound in your humidifier is a demon. It is praying for everyone to be saved. It is hearing your father pray in the language of angels every morning. It is your mother singing in tongues and then translating for you, all to tell you that Jesus loves the little children. It is Larry Norman and Phil Keaggy and Barry McGuire on the stereo. It is the experiential knowledge that miracles happen, that legs regrow and tumors shrink. It is prayers for sweet dreams each night, prayers when you go to sleep happily and prayers when you wake up from nightmares. It is rebuking demons on Halloween after you give candy to the Spider-Man at your door. It is the red songbook with the Jesus fish on the cover, with To God Be the Glory and Turn Turn Turn. It is Prayer Bear and VeggieTales and The Donut Man, it is GT and the Halo Express and Adventures in Odyssey. It is Young Earth, the pterodactyls flying above cowboys; it is Old Earth, the Big Bang bursting into void as Hugh Ross tells us what it means.
And now there's been some changes -- I've lost belief in Mokele-Mbembe, but gained at least a healthy agnosticism about Santa. I no longer consider Harry Potter inherently Satanic, but now consider A Voyage To Arcturus inherently Satanic. There's a give and take. But I stand on the same warm earth, rich with the promise of heaven and the pity of hell. Jesus is firm; that doesn't surprise me. What surprised me is all else that has stayed: the hippieness and fierceness and end-times-ness and the traditional and the subversive. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever, but even my childhood he has let me keep. At least in parts. And it strikes out like lightning on occasion from my words, and it isn't me, not really, it's my mother with her lilting lullaby voice that all the same spoke of heaven and hell and blood and martyrdom and love like consuming fire. It's she who planted these flowers which grow round the spokes of the wheel whose hub is God.

Anon, the only anons here "using minority communities as a cudgel to argue that any anti-christian rhetoric is a call for genocide." Are by one, singular, indigenous Assyrian who happens to be me, talking about my own community and our own genocide. That I personally lived through. That was a personal account. The genocide itself was religiously motivated (again, literally wrote ن/N for Nazarene on our homes. Literally crucified us. We cannot make this clearer.) and has caused my community, you know, indigenous Assyrians, to be overwhelmingly killed and for the majority of us to be in diaspora where pre-genocide we primarily resided in Iraq. I am not "using minority communities" I am speaking of my own community, in a personal account of something that has actually happened and that I've lived through.
Also I have no problem with atheists, my father is atheist, I personally am agnostic. My problem is with anti-theism which seeks to eradicate religion. Which does tend to affect us regardless of our personal faith.
We still got hatecrimed and targeted on the basis of being "Christian" regardless of our personal faith. Because oppression doesn't work by having someone ask you your religion then hate crime you.
And yes, our ethnicity is very much linked to our religious identity. That's not by choice, that's by how oppression against us works. When people call your language "speaking christian" you've long since crossed that line.
Also, again, despite my personal faith being agnostic. I still identify with christianity as a part of my heritage, culture and identity. It is intrinsically tied to who I am, not because I'm religious but because I am, regardless of what I do or believe, socially perceived as christian (back in Iraq, at least) and that's affected me growing up.
And because our community hubs were churches. You want to learn how to write syriac? You go to church. Hell, beyond that, our churches used to offer lecture, tutoring in various subjects (math, science, arabic etc.) organise community gatherings, trips, host cultural events. You know, the whole deal.
Also my specific experience with christianity was different. Our church hosted lectures on the historical context within the bible and on theology, we were encouraged to discuss and debate theology — of which included the divine nature of God, whether or not he existed, a plethora of biblical interpretations, our personal interpretations of the text and just... all of that.
As far as I'm aware, this was standard for Assyrian churches, at least in Mosul.
So I'm agnostic, but I identify with "christian" because I am culturally christian and that experience is deeply interwined with my identity and who I am as a person.
That experience includes genocide, and includes my house being set on fire when I was an immigrant in Jordan. It very much includes my classmates calling me "kafera" and the intergenerational trauma my family carried from previous genocides and massacres.
Because religion is identity, and people don't bother checking your faith before they hate crime you.
Here in Australia, I've found myself receiving unsavoury comments under the assumptions that I'm Muslim or come from a Muslim family, due to being visibly middle eastern. Now, I imagine people who do grow up in Muslim families in Australia would also find it hard to let go of the "label" Muslim should they be atheistic or adhere to another faith due to how that experience, being a part of a marginalised community, affected them and shaped a huge part of their identity. Not pulling that out of my ass either, I personally know a pagan Muslim friend who struggles with this, that is juggling two huge parts of her identity. In the end, she decided to still identify as Muslim culturally even if she wasnt Muslim religiously.
As someone from a similar background, that makes sense to me. I chose the same, after all.

“University of Houston’s LGBTQ+ Students Build New Community After Resource Center Closure,” words and photos by Malachi Key, 2023 Fall Fellow at the Texas Observer:
At the University of Houston, students and faculty alike are still reeling from the impacts of Senate Bill 17. The law, which was approved by the state Legislature earlier this year, effectively banned campus programs that catered to diverse student populations.
For many students, the worst impact of SB 17 was losing the LGBTQ+ Resource Center. Under the law, the center was recently merged with the Center for Diversity and Inclusion to form the newly created “Center for Student Advocacy and Community.” But even amidst what seem like insurmountable odds, student leaders and faculty are fighting back. From helping LGBTQ+ students access aid to mounting protest movements, they’ve proven unwilling to give up.
The impact of the Resource Center’s closure has led to “terror and outrage” amongst students, according to Kaitlin Tollman, UH senior and president of LGBTQ+ student organization GLOBAL.
Tumblr media
“Having that heart of the community go away is just devastating and it’s left so many people completely heartbroken,” Tollman told the Texas Observer.
As an LGBTQ+ student leader, she made frequent use of the center for a wide variety of events, from ice cream socials to candid talks about struggles with identity.
Tollman said it was a place that was frequently filled with laughter, warmth, and sometimes tears. Most importantly, they said that students found their home there:
“It was a central hub for the community. People connected, they established their foundation at the Uuniversity there. It was like a chosen family.”
Tollman also recalled how, even in unprecedented moments of grief, the compassion of Resource Center staff held their community together.
When Corey Sanders, former vice president of GLOBAL and a notable student leader in both the Black and LGBTQ+ communities, passed away in October of last year, Tollman and others were left reeling. As they scrambled to try to hold together their own emotions and organize the logistics of his funeral, the Resource Center became a rock to stand upon. Tollman said that within a day of his passing, staff had offered not only to host Sanders’ memorial but to help organize it.
While Senate Bill 17 is now set in stone, campus activists have been anything but compliant. In the wake of what she termed “an unprecedented attack on queer rights,” Tollman and others did what they knew how to do best: they organized.
UH officially ceased the LGBTQ+ Resource Center’s activities on September 1, 2023. But even before that point, student activists were hard at work trying to find a replacement.
GLOBAL partnered with a variety of other student organizations, sympathetic faculty, and even other colleges to try to create a “safety net” for queer students impacted by the bill’s passage. The “safety net” would not fully restore the programs removed by SB 17, but it would try to continue the same programs through student-led organizations and other groups not bound by state law.
While some of these groups are fairly typical, including Rice University Pride and the UH LGBTQ+ Alumni Network, students have also found an unexpected ally standing alongside them: the church.
Many LGBTQ+ students are more likely to wince than to grin when religion is brought up. Years of oppression at the hands of religious leaders and organizations is not an easy legacy to shake off, especially in the Bible Belt. But the University of Houston is actually one of only four universities in the country to host an interfaith religion center. At the A.D. Bruce Religion Center, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, and other religious groups mingle freely in a way that’s rarely seen elsewhere.
Tumblr media
Charles Graves, an Episcopal priest who serves as the campus minister for the local Lutheran ministry Houston Canterbury, quipped that the University’s unique situation was “Like those old jokes you hear where a rabbi, a priest, and a sheikh walk into a bar, except here it really happens.”
Graves has been involved in Houston’s campus ministry since 2019. He is also openly gay, something that he says has deeply impacted every aspect of how he approaches the idea of ministry.
“I went to Hampton University [in Virginia] for undergrad. At the time, it was not a place where I could be openly gay myself,” Graves said. “I basically ended up going back into the closet for the three years I was in college because of how intense the pressure was.”
Since Graves was raised in an affirming Episcopal church, he said that he actually had not heard a homophobic sermon until he entered college. But the experience shook him enough that he decided he wanted to help make sure no other college students had to feel that way.
“That’s not what Christianity has to look like,” Graves told us. “The way that my theology works is I believe more than anything that the Jesus I love represents love and care. Loving your neighbor means loving all your neighbors, full stop.”
As Graves spoke passionately about campus ministry, he gestured to the various rainbows decorating the corners of his office. While the space was decorated with dozens of crosses, the multitude of pride flags made it look like anything but a typical church.
Joining Houston Canterbury are four other religious organizations: Houston Hillel, United Campus Ministries, and Houmin. These four groups, loosely dubbed the “Affirming Campus Ministries,” created a partnership in the wake of SB 17 to minister to LGBTQ+ students.
Though their plans have not been finalized yet, Graves was sure to emphasize their desire to create a safe space for students as they attempt to carry on the legacy of the LGBTQ+ Resource Center. Since they are not university employees, they are not restricted by SB 17.
“Our friends in the Legislature love to speak of the right to religious freedom,” Graves said with a slight smirk. “So it’s kind of fun to use those rights in a way they might not have anticipated.”
While much of the response to SB 17 has been focused on mitigating the impact of the law, some students have chosen to take a more direct approach. As the dust settled, a student coalition came together to do more than just damage control: They came to fight.
“Free UH,” as the movement came to be known, was the brainchild of Tollman and Harrison Martin, a representative of the Young Democratic Socialists of America.
Drawing on a history of student activism including Students for a Democratic Society and other groups active in the 1960s, Martin initiated the movement with the goal of forming a student walkout and halting the university until their demands were met.
“The university has had a lot to say about how they’re going to help queer-plus students now that the Resource Center is gone,” Martin said. “But actions speak louder than words, and this is the time for action.”
Free UH has partnered with a wide variety of other organizations, with demands ranging from a return of Diversity Equity and Inclusion programs to support for graduate student pay increases. They plan to host several walkouts if the university does not meet their demands.
On October 20, the group delivered a petition to UH Chancellor Renu Khator’s office with the demands listed above. They plan to walk out on October 26 if their demands are not met, with additional protests to happen statewide on November 15.
While she’s not directly affiliated with the Free UH movement, few represent its unabashed passion as well as Associate English Professor Marie Gonzalez. Gonzalez, who is the faculty sponsor for GLOBAL, spoke candidly about her efforts over the years to push for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights.
“I’ve been here since 1991. Back then, the Women’s Resource Center was in a basement,” Gonzalez told the Observer. “We kept fighting, and eventually it merged with the LGBTQ+ Resource Center and we got that beautiful space in 2010. And now we’re right back where we started.”
Gonzalez was one of the first openly gay professors at the University of Houston. She recalled how, at one point in the late ’90s, she was asked to change her place setting at an event from “Marie Gonzalez and partner” to “Marie Gonzalez and guest.”
Gonzalez has offered up classrooms in the English building for students to host events now that the Resource Center is gone. She said it can be easy to get disheartened as she watches the hard work of activists get rolled back, but she encouraged queer students to stop and really take in all the people fighting for them.
“You’re winning, that’s why they’re going after you. I say you should wear it as a badge of honor,” Gonzalez said. “Double down, do even more. Be far more queer, far more flamboyant. At the end of the day, they’re fighting this hard because they know we’ll win in the end.”

◟ SUPPLEMENTING COMPENDIUM ◝ → DEAD N30N
here you will find a composition of people + places you may see mentioned in future roleplay posts, should you interact with Nour or Solstice in a universe adjacent or pertaining to the world of dead n30n. ( or, if you so desire to, even decide to inject your own character into dead n30n's universe for an interesting twist! ) you are more than welcome to use this as a reference for any reason pertaining to roleplay, and questions are always welcomed.
𝐒𝐘𝐍𝐎𝐏𝐒𝐈𝐒: DEAD N30N takes place in a futuristic universe blending a unique mixture of my favourite aesthetics; cyberpunk, steampunk, and cosmic eldritch fantasy. utilizing heavy biblical analogies, as well as borrowing names & places found directly in the bible, DEAD N30N is a lovemail/hatemail of my own personal complication with religious upbringing and the associated trauma. DEAD N30N is also meant to systematically deconstruct gender & sexual norms, both of which are social constructions created by humans, and is absent of homophobia and transphobia. Solstice themselves is a strong example of the absence of a strict gender identity as a norm, and as you follow their life in the city of Hellix, you will explore their personal views of gender, sex, and sexual orientation through the eyes of a creature that was born in a place where none of those things exist. because as alluded to in the bible.... angels have no gender, genitals, or sexual identity :]
Tumblr media
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐗: This is the focal point for a majority of the novel's progression. While other cities and states exist outside of Hellix, the Earth is not the same as it once was; having suffered an apocalyptic destruction some hundreds of years prior to Hellix's formation. Humanity was not nearly wiped out, but it it definitely struggled for a while. Hellix is considered the 'Capitol' of the New Earth, as it's referred to, and the main hub for the majority of the rest of it's surrounding cities, states, and countries. Hellix consists primarily of dazzling, sprawling & impressive architecture reaching high toward the sky. It is a blend of metal and machinery, as much of mankind is now blended with machinery. AI is incredibly rampant throughout the city, and it's mandatory that every human being born is to be assigned one.
𝐈𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐈𝐔𝐌: ( referring to the capitol city Iconium found in ancient Lycaonia mentioned in the bible, it was the destination for Paul and Barnabas as their first missionary journey ) Iconium is known as the largest manufacturer of AI & robotech in the entire New Earth. It is ran by a gentle-hearted billionaire named Jade Reyes and her equally kind wife Rose Reyes. Iconium's original conception was a dream from Jade for the hope that all humans could live comfortable, happy lives with the assistance of a personalized AI, that gathers data about you from the moment you're born, and grows and adapts alongside you as you grow and adapt. Iconium is constantly developing and upgrading it's technology with the hopes of making life as bearable and comfortable as possible for every human. Because of Iconium, homelessness and starvation are only a distant memory of the past.
𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐒: ( the first; the beginning. also called 'The Book of Genesis' in the bible, detailing the beginning of time itself ) is actually the first planet in the entire universe that God created, and the home of the angels. It originally resided in the hidden-away star cluster of Lazarus, but later had to be relocated after an unexpected event took place. Genesis is also nicknamed heaven, because humans were unaware that the two are actually one in the same.
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐀𝐙𝐀𝐑𝐔𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: ( referring to the brother of Martha and Mary who died in his sleep, and was later resurrected by Jesus as a testament to his miracles ) this is a small cluster of stars hidden beyond the pillars of creation that separates humanity from the divine. Herein lay the first home of the angels, before a tragedy ( an error on God's part ) caused the untimely destruction of the constellation, forcing God to relocate the planet. Genesis now resides in a new, unnamed star-cluster. Lazarus is now nicknamed NEON DEATH for it's stunning, neon-coloured wasteland of dead stars and broken planets. ( for a better visual, imagine the splasharts of the Empyrean skinline in league of legends. this is partially where i took inspiration ). Who destroyed the Lazarus Constellation and what triggered that event is a secret later revealed in the book :]
𝐏𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐀𝐑𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: ( image here ) is the gate separating humanity from the divine. It is theorized that if one is able to successfully pass between the gates, they will be able to freely wander among the angels and the gods. However, heaven and divinity are nothing like how they're painted in the interpretation through human eyes, and those stupid enough to try and test those waters are quickly exposed to the true horrors beyond.
𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐔𝐍 𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐘𝐑: the hard-headed, fight-loving angel personification of the planet of Genesis. Yes, you heard that right, Argun is literally Genesis in angelic form. It's still uncertain how the spirit of Genesis was able to be born as a half-human, half-angel, but God theorizes it may be because the planet is so well loved by the angels that it's beating heart became it's own spirit; and that spirit was birthed through a child. Argun is tied to Solstice ( Eden Cielo ) through the red string of fate. Their lives are forever meant to cross one another, and love is in their future. How that relationship develops, however, will be left to the progression of the story :]
𝐉𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐏𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐄: A young, green-haired morally grey angel who was known as the top doctor in heaven. He was previously married to Argun Maltyr, before the two mutually agreed to split up and simply exist as friends. Something... unnatural lurks behind Juniper's unassuming composition, and his ambitions are a mystery even to his closest friend, Argun Maltyr. What destiny awaits him is decided in the journey he chooses to take alongside Argun in tracking down Solstice on planet Earth.
𝐅𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐒 𝐂𝐀𝐃𝐈𝐄𝐔𝐗: ( latin for lucky and wordplay on the life of someone who is very unlucky ) she is known as The Architect and responsible for the initial design behind much of Hellix's more modern technological look. She's also Iconium's top mechanic, and in charge of the latest & most innovative designs for every new AI they produce. She is the person who first discovers Eden as they descend into Earth, and decides to take care of them. She teaches them about humans & human life, how to act like a human and be human. She provides them with the necessary data they desire, and regularly works on keeping their physical body up to date and in working condition. The two of them do wind up falling in love and even getting married, but their future is a mystery only discovered in the book :] Faustus as a person and her lifestyle are also a mystery
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐓: a place in heaven where angels who commit sins against God's design are tried and convicted for their crimes. This was originally Eden's first job, but was later passed down onto an angel named Remus, who admired Solstice and longed to be like them. Because God himself was incapable of keeping up on all his creations ( being an all-loving omnipotent presence that existed literally EVERYWHERE ) he had to design a place -- and a person, that could handle these things in his stead. This is how The Gold Court came to be, and how Solstice's first job was assigned to them.
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐄𝐍 𝐎𝐅 𝐄𝐃𝐄𝐍: this is the capitol city of the planet Genesis, and Eden/Solstice's birthplace. The Garden of Eden is often referred to as the place where mankind's first sin took place ( Eve eating from the apple tree ) but it is also known as the place where an angel's first sin took place. That angel in question was none other than Lucifer himself. Because of Lucifer's desire for power, his corruption of humans caused the Garden of Eden to be a center point for both human & angelic sin alike.
𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐀 𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐍: The infamous angel assigned as Eden/Solstice's guardian in heaven, and who later followed them down onto earth where they were separated for a time. He was one of God's top commanders in the angelic army, and later became a data pirate on earth, dealing in the well-kept secrets of the most corrupt politicians & billionaires on earth. Through his work he was able to expose and condemn a number of awful, evil people still living comfortable lives they didn't deserve on Earth, all the while keeping a watchful, silent eye on Eden from afar. He is the guardian first and foremost, and takes that job very seriously. On earth he later falls in love with a human named Emiko and they marry, having a child by the name of Eamon later on. Emiko, Eamon and Sana are like an adoptive family to Eden.
𝐆𝐎𝐃: finally we get on the last important character you'll often see mentioned in the book; God himself. Just who is he? We don't actually know; but we do know that the bible-to-human interpretation of him is very wrong. God is both man and woman, and nothing at all. He is love and hate, happiness and despair. She is kind and strict, cautious and reckless. Curious and arrogant. God is everything... all things. She has no body, no corporeal form, and not even Eden or Nour know what God actually looks like. What we do know is God has a plan, a purpose for the universe, and hides their true intentions within a secret coding they've buried deep inside Solstice.

Metalocalypse #27: “Dethwedding” | April 1, 2008 - 1:15AM | S02E07
Hey it’s been a little while since we got to watch Metalocalypse. In this one, Pickles brother Seth invites Dethklok to his wedding, which already advertises the fact that the wedding “features” Dethklok. His video invitation is hilarious. Seth is dressed in his Sunday best set against serene backdrops while he brags about his sobriety. Pickles is mortified to the point of despondency. The other band members just think it’s very, very funny.
The tribunal explains what American weddings are during one of their meetings. These scenes can be a pointless reminder that there is such a thing as the tribunal, and it also lends a false sense of gravity to the plot of each episode. It also serves what might be an accidental function of supplying future-proof context; let’s say there comes a day when the once-standard American wedding becomes an obsolete curiosity.
Or, let’s say this episode is being shown to a species of aliens who have no idea what a wedding is. You know the type of aliens I’m talking about: the kind that mock our god, oppressively holding up the Holy Bible and remarking “HUMAN PROPAGANDA”.* Just by satirically describing what a wedding is brings all those weirdos up to speed, even though it seems gratuitous. The tribunal actually declare that they will not intervene. Why would they? Dethklok’s just going to a wedding, for fuck’s sake.
*I am actually making a very specific reference to a circa-early-2000s episode of The Outer Limits, where a robot does this. I don’t know the title of the episode, but Heather Graham is in it.
Things are tense between Pickles and his brother. Seth immediately starts drinking again. He has scumbag friends who suck. Seth constantly asks for money. Dethklok perform a song with a little music video accompaniment (for us watching on television at least) featuring a married couple decaying and then eventually mutating into one another, getting all Cronenbergy. Dethklock get Seth a blender, which is just an item on his wedding gift registry. When Seth chews out Pickles for cheaping out, Pickles beats his brother up. Later, he feels bad, so he installs Seth as the head of Dethklok Australia, whose leader was recently assassinated by the Revengencers. Over the closing credits we see Seth thriving in his new position at the absolute expense of Sydney, Australia, which is practically in ruins while he surveys his land, doing a big smile like a tyrant would.
This one is very good. Metalocalypse’s misanthropic sense of humor really shines. The show will often show spectacular examples of gore and mayhem, but nothing is treated with grim incapability like family is...treated. With. Fuck. You know what the whole not ending your sentence with a preposition thing is lame and bad. It’s not that I’m bad at writing. I’m taking a stand.
The show has been taken down from HBOMax since the last time I watched it. It’s currently streaming on Adult Swim. At a glance it seems like it’s streaming in its entirety. It may or may not require a cable log-in. Actually, I’ll check in a private browser. Hang on. Okay. I did it. It played! It’s also on DVD, which is nice, but my copy’s digipak has shattered disc hubs so the discs are not fully secure in the box. Not good. Is there a way to fix this? Wait. Let me google it myself. Okay. Huh. I found something called “adhesive-backed spider DVD/CD disc hubs” that literally might be the exact thing I’m looking for. Wow. Well, you learn something extremely important like that every day, don’t you?

Remember when I was asking about the Robert Osbourne host intros? I’m guessing these are what that wiki was talking about! Either whoever wrote that got confused (these were taken from a ZUNE that Adult Swim gave away I guess with select episodes of select shows loaded onto them), or they repurposed some of those intros for the April Fools stunt. Neat! Thank you Kon for finding this and showing me them. Thank you.

I might be able to shed some light on the pierced ears thing - I live in suburbia of the bible belt and even today there is an attitude of pierced ears being sexually promiscuous and good white christian girls do not pierce their ears. HOWEVER married women are allowed to have pierced ears because “obviously” they’re not sexually promiscuous, they’re respectable stay-at-home-mom housewives who only have sex with their husbands and only for the purposes of procreation. Which may have been how it was back in the early 20th century, “oh us older women are allowed to have pierced ears because no one’s going to believe respectable married are promiscuous, however young unmarried girls and women will be seen as promiscuous if they pierce their ears”
Interesting! That does seem to have been part of the attitude when ear piercing was frowned upon, the promiscuity aspect. However, most married women also didn't have pierced ears back then, probably because of the other half of the bias against the practice: racism/ethnic prejudice and out-of-proportion infection fears.
(Obviously ear-piercing infection happens. It happened to my sister in like 1993, and it's even more likely if you use the "unsterilized needle in someone's house" method all too common before and during the taboo era. But some of the things I've read sound very Mean Girls Health Teacher about it- "don't pierce your ears or you'll 100% for sure get BLOOD POISONING and DIE.")
So I doubt that thought process prevailed for the transitional generation. It does interest me that some people think that way, though, because I too grew up in a very white part of suburban Bible Belt, USA, and I never heard anything like that. Even the daughters of a Lifeway Christian Store exec who lived on my street got their ears pierced around age 8-12 like the rest of us; there was no sexual connotation to it at all.
Then again, it was a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee, which is a hub for the music industry, so...possibly rather more open-minded than other parts of the region.
