A World to Rediscover

Pairing: Kurtbastian Rating: T Word Count: 1300

Notes: Posted for @kurtbastianarchive's “The First Time” Anniversary Event day three: Based on Existing Fan Content. I’ve loved this gorgeous piece of fanart by @bardicious ever since I first saw it, and thought it would make a great premise for a fic. I took a crack at it by writing this one-shot. I hope you all enjoy, and please go check out @bardicious' fantastic art!

The audience in the massive theater hummed with pre-show chatter. Sebastian sort of wished that he’d stopped at the bar back in the lobby, but knew his sister wouldn’t approve of that if word got back to her.

Not that Addison was likely to tattle on him, or even notice what he was doing at all. No, his niece was enraptured by every detail of the room around them, alternating between poring over her Playbill and darting her eyes up towards the curtained stage.

Sebastian, bored, finally interrupted her reverie when she flipped to the page with all the cast bios. “Which is the one you have a crush on?” he teased.

Addison immediately blushed, whacking his hand away when he reached for the program. “Shut up, Sebastian.”

He smirked. Fourteen-year-olds were so easy to rile up.

Finally the lights dimmed, the crowd quieted, and the overture began to emanate from the orchestra pit. Sebastian tried to remember the last time he’d been in a theater like this - not since college, probably. He’d lived in New York for over a year now, but generally stayed away from Broadway. He was only here now because he’d offered to take his musical-obsessed niece to a show as a birthday present. He was her only uncle, so he won the title of “best” by default, but he knew that this would endear her to him significantly.

Sebastian didn’t know much about the show, and he didn’t bother to pay much attention as it unfolded in front of them. Even if he were into musicals, this one seemed particularly thin on plot and heavy on spectacle.

Partway through the first act, a new character was introduced amid a song, stepping onto stage in a burst of light and smoke. Addison gasped, leaning forward in her seat, and even Sebastian himself was caught off guard by the striking silhouette.

Then the figure on stage opened his mouth to sing and the spotlight hit him, illuminating his face.

Sebastian’s heart stuttered and his eyes widened as he had two simultaneous reactions - recognition, because even though it’d been ten years, it was hard to forget a voice like Kurt Hummel’s; and attraction, because holy fuck. His character’s costume bared his biceps, with black fabric wrapped snugly over the strong lines of his muscles, and his expression was delectably cocky as he belted out his verse.

What the fuck what the fuck what the fuck.

Sebastian continued to ignore the plot of the play, but now it was because he couldn’t keep his focus off of Kurt Hummel, who was all grown up in all the best ways. He felt like his brain was going to short-circuit with this information. He hadn’t thought about Kurt in years, and this was a hell of a way to run into him again.

During intermission he went to the restroom and splashed water on his face. He stared at his damp reflection as theatergoers bustled around him, and tried to get a hold of himself. He didn’t want Addison to get suspicious that something was wrong.

He managed to get through the rest of the performance, his eyes glued to Kurt every time he was on stage. He realized at some point that Kurt’s bio must be in the Playbill - maybe it would hold some clues as to what he’d been up to over the past decade.

When the curtain fell, Addison gripped his arm. “We have to get autographs!” she said urgently.

“It’s late,” he argued - he still had to shepherd her all the way back to her home in New Jersey.

“Sebastian,” she pleaded. He’d told his sister not to have her kids call him ‘uncle’ - it made him feel old. He’d only been fifteen when Addison was born, so they’d always been on a first-name basis. “This is my birthday present,” she insisted.

He sighed. “Yeah, okay, fine.”

As they made their way to the stage door, Sebastian considered his options. It wasn’t every day that he was faced with the specter of his past, a reminder of his high school mistakes and their collateral damage. He’d grown a lot through the course of college and adulthood, and it made him cringe to think of some of the things he’d pulled off as an attention-seeking teenager. He still liked attention, admittedly, but he’d found less destructive ways to pursue it. He wondered if Kurt still hated him, or if he even remembered him. He wasn’t sure which of those options was worse.

There was no avoiding him, though - he wasn’t going to let Addison push her way through a crowd of theater freaks by herself. And he had to admit, he was a little curious to see how good Kurt looked up close.

The actors came out and greeted their fans, and Sebastian and Addison inched closer to the barricades. Kurt seemed popular amongst the fans, smiling for photos and signing one thing after another. His bright smile and easy gestures were a radical departure from the villainous character he’d been playing. It wasn’t until Sebastian saw the contrast that he realized how well Kurt had acted on stage, completely embodying a person so different from himself. Sebastian wondered if this, now, was the real Kurt, or just another mask put on for the fans. Sebastian tried to imagine what a “real” Kurt could look like - how had he changed over the past decade?

Finally, they reached him, and Addison held out her Playbill desperately. “You were amazing,” she gushed. “I love your song, I’ve been playing it on repeat for weeks!”

“Why thank you,” Kurt said his voice sending an odd jolt through Sebastian’s body. Kurt’s Sharpie slid over the glossy paper as he signed his name. “And have you -”

He stopped speaking when he looked up at Sebastian, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face. Sebastian’s heart thumped in his chest with their sudden eye contact.

“Do I…know you?” Kurt asked slowly.

Sebastian grinned wryly. “You did once.”

Realization dawned in Kurt’s expression, his jaw slackening. “Sebastian Smythe,” he muttered.

His tone was all shock, and no derision. Sebastian’s grin widened.

“You were really good up there,” Sebastian told him.

Kurt blinked. “Um, thank you.”

It was chaotic around them, the crowd jostling behind Sebastian, actors and audience both shouting to be heard. A young woman at Sebastian’s shoulder thrust her Playbill in Kurt’s direction.

“See you around,” Sebastian said, irony twisting his voice. Kurt laughed, seemingly still in disbelief.

Sebastian put his arm around Addison’s shoulder and they turned away, fighting their way back through the crowd.

She pulled away from his embrace as soon as she could. “Do you know Kurt Hummel?” she demanded.

Sebastian shrugged, starting down the sidewalk. “I competed against him in high school.”

“What?!” she exclaimed, trailing after him. “You have to tell me everything!”

Sebastian stifled a laugh. “I invited him and his boyfriend to a gay bar.”

“What?!” Addison practically screamed, reaching out and grabbing his arm.

“Calm down, or people will think I’m abducting you,” he said, glancing around the busy street.

Addison let go of him and continued to walk in a daze. “I can’t believe this…” she said.

They passed through Times Square, the streets LED-bright, buskers and scammers milling around the thinning groups of tourists. “So,” Sebastian said. “You liked the show?”

“Are you kidding me?” Addison exclaimed, shooting him a toothy grin. “I loved it! Thank you so much, I’m sorry I yelled.”

Sebastian smirked, slipping his hands into his pockets. He felt energy coursing through his veins, the endorphin rush of the bizarre rollercoaster that the evening had turned out to be. He’d enjoyed the musical a lot more than he’d expected. “Well,” he said to Addison, looking over to see that she was still clutching the Playbill with Kurt’s name scrawled on it. “If you’re that big of a fan…how would you feel about going again next week?”

Hi! I'm Nastia, but my artist name is Bardicious! I'm a freelance illustrator based in NYC. I mostly work digitally and hope to get more acquainted with 3D Modeling in the future.

I take my inspiration from myths, legends, fairy tales, superhero comics, you name it. I love color, and I try to make every illustration I draw as vibrant as the last. My current fandom haunt is the Netflix Witcher series, but I've been here drawing Marvel fanart (mostly Loki), DC fanart, and BBC Merlin fanart, and many more for a few years now.

Tom loves Loki

I was listening to the Vanity Fair Still Watching: Loki episode 3 podcast yesterday, and this response from Wunmi Mosaku jumped out at me. [time 1:04:45]

Interviewer: “Was it your sense that he kinda took this project personally? That this is a character that he’s played for so long. He’s an executive producer on the show. Was he just so hands on in this because is something he just really wanted to make sure they got right?”

Wunmi Mosaku: “I think so. I feel like he is so in love with Loki as a character, I think he’s so in love with the MCU and the fans. I know that he feels completely indebted to them and that his life is what it is because of Loki and the MCU and the fans.

And I think he’s knows how intimidating it must be for newbies like us to join such a huge franchise already. He was so like… like a big brother, just keeping us chill about it. It didn’t feel as scary as I thought it was going to feel.

… I think Tom is just kinda in love with the whole world, from the people that he works with – I know that he thinks fondly of all the people that he’s worked with over the last 10 years in the MCU, and know that he’s so in love with all of the fans and how much they’ve taken to Loki. He’s just passionate about it, and so happy. He’s just really happy… that they want to see Loki. He’s such a loved character. So I think it just means the world to him. I think it really does. So he’s just totally up for making it as brilliant as he possibly can for everyone who’s made it even possible. So yeah, us doing lines is nothing, it’s just making the show better.”

I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this.

Firstly, it makes me grin from ear to ear to hear that Tom seems to have been having a great time making this series. I really hope that it pans out well for him.

And to hear another actor saying that he genuinely cares about the character and is passionate about the character – just… wow! I mean this is one of the reasons I accidentally became a Tom Hiddleston fan – his willingness to be openly enthusiastic about things in a world where it’s cool to not take anything too seriously.

And then for Wumni to specifically mention the fans – O.O And to essentially say that Tom is making this for the people who love Loki – I – I cried.

Generally I try not to think too much about what it must be like for a human being to be so famous and have so many fans – like it must be really uncomfortable a lot of the time. I almost feel a little apologetic about being one?? So to hear this said of someone I have such huge respect and admiration for, unprompted, is just so sweet. I figure for Wunmi to be saying this sort of thing in an interview it must have been abundantly clear on set.

And now for the conflicting feelings…

Knowing that Tom is obviously trying so very hard to make this series the best it can be, and knowing my response to it so far (we’re 3 episodes in as I write this), makes me realise we have very different ideas on what the appealing aspects of the character are.

Yet like @bardicious has said, despite me not liking a significant amount of the series so far I really want it to go well for Tom’s sake.

And yet still, I have this weird feeling that I should give this new personality a go, because a good friend has asked me to. I almost feel I need to be kind to him (Loki) because he’s been through a rough time recently, like I would if a friend went off the rails a bit, or made some major life change that was a bit unsettling to me, but they were excited about it.

And maybe its not what I wanted to see, but maybe there’s something of value to be gained by being kind to this old friend I haven’t seen for years, who’s changed in that time. Even if it’s only a greater understanding of the variety of people and an opportunity to exercise compassion. So yeah, apparently my subconscious thinks of some sort of Tom/Loki hybrid as someone I have an obligation to be gentle and kind with. And maybe that’s not too bad a thing.

It’s been one long day of waiting to see what everyone is talking about with this behind the scenes clip, and I’m happy to say I was not disappointed!

Let’s go!

And here he is! The man himself! Looking and sounding amazing in some crazy location. What is that writing behind him?

Then we get flashes of different scenes and in amongst them is a glimpse of Asgard. Eeeeee! I’m so looking forward to revisiting Asgard, but I’m aware there’s huge risk they might take a tone that is different than the first Thor films and that would make me very sad.

This. I LOVE this.

I like how we’ve not seen this sort of magic before from Loki. Nor this movement. It’s a very physical movement, with lots of strength behind it. Proportional to the amount of force required? There’s no glow of magic, but then I think that fits with his telekinesis grabbing the roomba and his destruction of the furniture in his cell in TDW. (The light we saw there was only the furniture bouncing off the forcefield.)

Ah this came up at the perfect time for when I wanted to post something but not put too much thought into it; thanks for the tag @thelightofthingshopedfor!

1. Why did you choose your URL? It comes from a YA book that was one of my favorites as a kid, although why I latched onto that particular book for a url, I couldn't tell you. After a few years, though, artichoke has now become part of my identity and I do like to think I have many layers, so ... there we are.

2. Any side blogs? @charlotte--lennox is my personal journal side blog that I constantly forget that I have, lmao. I haven't updated it in months, but for better or for worse, it's still there.

3. How long have you been on Tumblr? On fandom tumblr, since 2018. On tumblr in general, I had a few blogs sporadically since like 2008.

4. Do you have a queue tag? Theoretically I do, but I don't have a queue lmao. I keep feeling like I should fill the queue up and put it to use again, but, idk something about it makes me feel a bit merpy.

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place? To participate in the Loki fandom and also to promote my fanfic.

6. Why did you choose you icon/pfp? Bc I love Chloe Bennett and low-key want to be her, and the ace flag background bc I enjoy being "out and proud" as ace on tumblr, since I'm not out anywhere else, heh.

7. Why did you choose your header? Because I made it when I was playing around in Photopea and it turned out kinda good, so I figured I'd use it. I only changed it recently; it was the cover art for Stars Hide Your Fires for months and months, which I loved bc Thor and Loki are so pretty and SHYF is, I think, ultimately my favorite fic I've written.

8. What’s your post with the most notes? My post+ post, lmao. I haven't looked at it in awhile but the last time I checked it was at like 77k. Relatedly, it's really funny how we all flipped out over post+ and then never heard anything else about it again; not sure if tumblr decided to kill it or not, but I do like to think that, if they did, my post (and all the lawyers who commented that I was right) had something to do with it. The headache of my notifications being held hostage for a few weeks should have accomplished something.

9. How many mutuals do you have? I have no idea - maybe like 12? Nah I'm sure it's more than that but I honestly don't know and wouldn't even know how to check.

10. How many followers do you have? I am up to 1730, which I feel really badly about, bc I did my follower celebration call for prompts at 1605 or something and since then I have gained followers and only filled three prompts so, yknow, not a great look. That being said, I'm also pretty sure a decent number of those followers are porn bots or inactive or otherwise blank.

11. How many people do you follow? 178, apparently, which feels like a lot.

12. Have you ever made a shit post? I constantly make shit posts, to varying degrees of success.

13. How often do you use tumblr? Every day; even if I don't post that day, I usually check in a couple of times to at least look at my notifs and a couple of dash pages. It's literally addictive.

14. Did you ever have a fight/argument with another blog? Well yeah, I know I've gotten into it with people over wanky things; I do try not to be antagonistic if I can help it but, that said, sometimes it can't be helped. I've also had falling outs with people over who knows what (really, I don't know), and then there's the many people who've preemptively blocked me for one reason or another. So, yeah, I'm hardly popular around these parts lmao.

15. How do you feel about “you need to reblog” posts? Generally the fastest way to get me to not reblog something is to include some "reblog this right now, I don't care if it fits your blog or not, this is important" note, like, well I probably would have reblogged it but now I'm not going to.

16. Do you like tag games? I do, generally, but sometimes I'm tagged in things I don't really care to participate in (but I appreciate the tag!) and other times I'm tagged and I just completely forget to respond to it, so it probably seems like I don't like them, womp womp.

17. Do you like ask games? I kinda love them, but the last several I've posted haven't gotten any interaction (which is sad bc I used to get at least a few responses, and who are you 1730 followers, anyway?) so I'm less inclined to post them these days.

18. Which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous? I don't think anyone? I mean, I guess it depends on how you define tumblr-famous, though. When I think of tumblr-famous, I think of like, biggest-gaudiest-patronuses and vampireapologist and, like, badjokesbyjeff - those accounts that everyone knows. But then within fandom, there are some blogs that are more well-known than others, and I think at least a few of my mutuals are fairly well-known in the Loki fandom. Ymmv, though.
