BnHA Chapter 340: Now Where Were We

Previously on BnHA: Deku and Iida were all “hey Mei, I know you don’t have a lot of spare time in between constantly launching yourself at people boob-first, and singlehandedly MacGuyvering U.A. into the fucking Death Star, but we were wondering if you could lend us a hand in fixing our costumes.” Mei was all, “sure thing, here’s an upgraded pair of Movie 1 Gloves for you, anyways off you go and have fun saving the world!” Mt. Lady was all, “can you kids keep a secret?? so uh, just between you and me, I’m not a real teacher, and I’m not actually sure what I’m doing here hanging out with you guys right now.” Class 1-A was all, “don’t worry, your secret is safe with us Mt. Lady, well anyways time to assemble our CLASS 1-A SEARCH SQUAD!” The chapter ended with A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE getting ready to DO and/or TALK about A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT THINGS. Classic cliffhanger ending. lol this chapter really did not hold up on a re-read. I’m so sorry BnHA 339. You meandered so that future chapters could hopefully get to the damn point already.

Today on BnHA: All Might is all “time to reveal our shocking and completely unpredictable battle plan of splitting up all the villains for more easily digestible mini-boss battles, using our newly acquired trump card, the handy dandy U.A. traitor!” Aizawa is all, “[cracks knuckles] time to drop some motherfucking love and compassion onto my traumatized student in order to talk him into doing this INSANELY DANGEROUS TASK for us, except that somehow I manage to do it in a way that’s genuinely moving and heartfelt and somehow not manipulative at all lol.” Shinsou is all, “hello, it’s me, making my miraculous return after three whole years of plot inactivity, so anyway what have I missed.” Well shit. Glad I’m not the only one, Shinsou.

(just a handful of quick notes here since it’s been a while! (1) as always, these are my completely blind first-time-reading reactions to the chapter. (2) as of today, I am very much NOT caught up with the manga, but will keep you posted on my progress. currently I have read up to chapter 340, a.k.a. this chapter right here lol. and (3), I have been spoiled about one major thing (explained more in depth here) which will happen later in the series, and while there are no detailed references to said spoiler in this post, there ARE a couple of vague throwaway lines because I have absolutely no self-control. so just giving you guys a heads up for that! if you absolutely don’t want to risk getting spoiled, I would highly recommend catching up with the manga first before reading any further.

OH MY GOSH IT’S SOME BUILDINGS!!!

WHAT A THRILLING WAY TO KICK OFF MY FIRST NEW CHAPTER OF BNHA IN ELEVEN MONTHS. TRULY HIT THE GROUND RUNNING

lol they literally just thumbtacked a handwritten “LOV/PLF COUNTER-FORCE HQ” sign on a wrinkled piece of paper next to the door. how far we have fallen from the days where the heroes were holding their war councils in huge NASA ground control rooms filled with hundreds of TV screens

okay good, at least they went out and recruited Hawks to be one of the people presumably planning this whole thing

one of only two people (the other being Momo) whom I actually trust to be able to come up with a reliably smart plan. fingers crossed this turns out better than his last big Ultimate Hero Final Battle Plan, though!

interesting! I assume they do still know about the whole Aoyama situation though, seeing as they even told Mt. flippin’ Lady lol

OH MY GOSH, RAGDOLL? heck yeah. great to see her finally back in the thick of things again. even if she can’t participate in the actual battle, she’s still a fucking hero goddammit

anyway, so on to the planning and stuff

I’m actually on the fence about this lol. I mean, it makes sense on paper. lord knows they had enough trouble taking on just one massively overpowered final villain, so who even knows what would happen if they added a second one to the mix

but the problem with the “just take them down separately” plan is that it means they’ll also have to split up their OWN forces, which are already heavily depleted. not to mention that the BnHA heroes are always at their best when they’re all fighting together. so anyways, yeah, I’m not too sure about this

so blah blah blah, Tomura is now stronger than crusty!potato!AFO, big surprise. and they’ve also figured out that the two AFOs can communicate with each other via radio waves or whatever. okay yeah, but doesn’t that mean that even if you do split them up, they’ll still have a big advantage? unless you figured out some way of jamming their telepathy somehow

“should they attack together, we have no hope of victory” lol if you say so. I’m pretty sure all of the U.A. kids combined with all of the remaining A-list heroes could hold their ground fairly well, but clearly I’m not supposed to be questioning the authority of this statement so ALL RIGHT THEN

OKAY BUT DOESN’T THIS JUST PROVE MY POINT THOUGH

“if they’re so powerful together then why didn’t they team up against S&S?” “because they definitely would have definitely lost.” ????????

anyway so now All Might is saying that they need to separate TomurAFO and Potato AFO (PotAFO, if you will) by at least 10km. so is that the max range of their telepathy or something then? that’s so oddly specific though

“oh and we also need to split up Dabi from them as well” ah okay lol, I see where this is going. it’s finally time for the final battle, meaning we need to assign each of the main characters to their personal final villain, yeah? great. awesome. except that they only JUST got reunited all together as a class again sob. you’re really going to do this to me again now?? just like that?? goddammit

IT’S THE FINAL BATTLE FOR FUCK’S SAKE, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU HAVE US DO, MAKESTE” okay okay fine I’ll shut up now, geez

somehow I momentarily forgot all about Aoyama. possibly because I haven’t seen him in eleven months!! so this is where we’re finally going to get into the nitty gritty of that “let’s use Aoyama to set a trap” plan that Aizawa shamelessly stole from Kaminari all those moons ago

All Might is all “it’s actually pretty messed up of us to be using this poor boy when he’s already basically spent his entire life being exploited and manipulated by people” and he’s not wrong though, damn

but Nao is all “very true, but to be fair this is the literal apocalypse, and he did technically make his own bed, and also our backs are REALLY against the goddamn wall here,” which is also true. still leaning more toward All Might’s side in spite of that, though. poor Yuuga

Aizawa Shouta is sitting here wearing an eyepatch and a hospital gown and probably hasn’t showered in like three days, and despite all this he is STILL somehow the hottest character in BnHA and it’s not even close

okay but there are like a thousand reasons why the threat of imminent murder would be infinitely more useful than an actual murder, though. like this doesn’t really make any sense. “why would AFO bother to threaten Aoyama if he could simply blow him up if and when he betrayed him?” uh, gee, maybe because he would much prefer if Aoyama didn’t actually betray him in the first place?? what, do you think U.A. traitors are so fucking easy to come by? in this economy??

talk about ironic though. because to me, that’s a sentiment that basically confirms that he does have the heart of a hero deep down. I’m telling you guys, every single time you show me a character who is flawed and afraid, but is trying so hard to overcome their fears, and trying with all their might to become better, you will reel me in hook, line, and sinker every. single. time. seriously, how could you possibly not root for this kid now

Yuuga’s fear as he tries to talk himself into what he fully believes is a suicide mission. Aizawa’s blunt assessment of the heroes being no less ruthless than the villains when their backs are to the wall. but then the way he just HITS him with that “you’re still my student and I’m still your teacher” line, and how he says it with such finality. and then the face Aoyama makes in response!!

well damn. that hype and anticipation is definitely starting to build now. I am so damn fearful for all of these fictional kids’ safety, especially now that I’m watching the War arc play out again in the anime and remembering just how brutal it was. but at the same time I can’t deny that I’m super excited to see the culmination of everything. like, this is IT, though. this is THE moment, THE battle. no more safety arcs. no more training. we are done holding back, and that is as terrifying as it is exhilarating. I am so not ready for any of this, but IT IS HAPPENING WHETHER I LIKE IT OR NOT, so I guess I’ll just do my best to enjoy the ride

MHA Ch. 378 is Horikoshi being so epically poetic. The first “Story of How We All Became Heroes, Part 3” was Chapter 340. It begins with All Might and Hawks walking into their secret HQ near Central Hospital, with All Might holding his magnets and props. The chapter ends with Aizawa “ripping out” Aoyama’s fear of AFO and convincing him that, as ashamed and despicable as Aoyama feels, he must fight for the heroes.

Chapter 341 is the “Story of How We All Became Heroes, Part Minus One.” It’s where the villains truly lose hope, with Toya burning Himiko’s childhood home, Himiko holding Twice’s blood, and Tomura going full Tetsuo & becoming a flesh monster. The chapter ends with Spinner giving into AFO’s will.

The second “Story of How We All Became Heroes, Part 3” is Chapter 378. It begins with La Brava vs Skeptic and UA falling out of the sky. The chapter ends with Gentle returning to save UA and Nagant returning to stop TomurAFO from using Decay, just as All Might walks out of the secret HQ holding his briefcase.

Can I ask you about the recent bnha leaks?

I know the official translation might be different but what do you think about the aoyama part of the chapter, when he said: "his last day as a U.A. Student."

No matter what way it's looked at, it seems bad right?

Whether it's U.A. itself that would push him out (did aizawa allude to that? Or would he or the other 1a students just let that happen?) or aoyama's own opinion on what should happen to him (extremely wrong for him to be carrying that mindset given his circumstances), either way that's bad right?

Oh totally, it's complete bs no matter how you look at it. And this isn't new either; Aizawa even said to him in chapter 340 that, though he personally doesn't want to expel Aoyama, he can't guarantee his stay at UA.

I know this has all been said more eloquently before but really, the kid was dragged into associating with AFO by his parents and forced to work against the heroes by the man himself. And I know I like to point out how pathetic AFO is but the heroes don't believe that. So why is this child being punished & treated like any other villain for being personally threatened by Japan's criminal kingpin; why is him getting kicked out of UA even on the table at all?

(Well of course the answer is that heroes only know how to punish lawbreakers and save people only from lawbreakers. And they can make exceptions, I'm sure Aoyama will be one; but as the saying goes, exceptions prove the rule. Sending him to jail would be standard.)

Ramblings about BNHA chap 377

So let’s dig into Chap 377.

It starts with the comment ‘As the heroes withered… the villains thrived’ plus an explanation of how the heroes split the villains to have the advantage.

It’s worth to remember previously (chap 340) it was implied the advantage of the Villains wasn’t numerical, in fact we’ve seen the split groups of the Villains being almost all outnumbered by the heroes, except for the Spinner’s one (which wasn’t split by the heroes as it was always meant to go to Central Hospital and which actually didn’t contain many Villains but is mostly formed by protesting Heteromorphs) but it was a problem of power.

The heroes (who had no idea Himiko has some of Jin’s blood) wouldn’t have managed to face off against Shigaraki and All for One if the two were together, and Touya’s fire would have made even more complicate to split them.

Hence the ‘divide and conquer’ strategy.

Only now, tables has turned.

Behind all this, the visual of sakura trees, their petals fluttering in the wind, a hold hand trying to grab one of them and failing because the wind blows it away. The whole image serves as a comparison to what’s being discussed. It’s poetic, and while the petal might serves as a comparison to how victory might be fleeting, maybe the ‘old hand’ serves as a comparison with the ‘old ways’.

This battle is, basically, a retake of the previous war. Again the heroes’ strategy is ultimately to try to beat the Villains with brute strength and kill the ones who’re too dangerous. It’s the standard approach of the old generation.

As BnHA is about the young generation who might be called in to stop the Villains by saving them, the old hand failing to catch the petal might represent the failure of the old generation. I wonder if the new generation will be instead represented by a young hand stretching out to grab another. We’ll see.

Sadly the chapter doesn’t show what will happen between Touya and his father but moves to the place where Shigaraki is. Aizawa sees the portal opening, Yamada being tossed out of it (why Kurogiri? Why not letting him at the hospital? Is the Shirakumo in you who’s acting?), then Kurogiri and, after him, the Twice clones who jumps on him, Monoma and Manual, causing Monoma to fall on the ground and, likely, to blink.

Shigaraki gets back the full power of his quirk and the place seems to explode.

Turns out the work to keep the place floating was super-rushed so now that a power line was busted the place is in serious risk of collapsing.

As if this wasn’t bad enough it seems Skeptic has managed to successfully attack the control center island through his hacker abilities… so this is what was meant to be his role in the battle. It seems All for One really got the memo on which was going to be the hero’s strategy if he figured Shigaraki would be dragged to fight into the flying UA and therefore Skeptic would need to take control of it.

Back to Midoriya we go who gives us another summary of how bad the situation is, because he thinks at how, since Erasure is no longer active Shigaraki, or better the deadliest villain of all is about to be unleashed and that if UA all, tragedy might befall on all the world as well.

Seeing Kurogiri (a black spot with eyes near Shigaraki) he also wonders about what happened at Central Hospital and notes that Shigaraki is… shedding his skin… which I’m not sure why he does beyond the symbolical value and the problems Shigaraki had in choosing a new form for his new body.

Once he’s done though, Shigaraki talks to Midoriya and, from the way he speaks (he uses ‘ore’ like Shigaraki usually does and mentions them having a chat at the mall, which is something Shigaraki and Midoriya did in the past), we can assume Shigaraki is the one in control now.

So interesting, giving him back his quirk allowed him to go back in control apparently because in chap 369, when his body started to inflate after Midoriya hit him, All for One seemed still in control of it.

Midoriya realizes the one talking to him is Shigaraki, while Shigaraki points out that, even if he were to tell Midoriya he’s there, they wouldn’t sit down for a chat at the mall because he’s Midoriya’s villain.

Now… Midoriya and Shigaraki had their chat at the mall in chap 68/69. During it Shigaraki kind of bared his soul to Midoriya, explaining him how he hated everyone and how no one was seeing him but they were all talking about Stain.

Midoriya explained him that the difference between Shigaraki and Stain was that he could understand Stain’s motivation but not Shigaraki, claiming Shigaraki did it all just for fun while, for Stain, it started with All Might (same as for Midoriya) and that he was doing it for a reason (Midoriya found acceptable) and that although his methods were wrong, he was trying to live by his ideals.

Shigaraki then assumes this means he hates Stain and Midoriya because they’re connected to All Might, that it’s due to All Might that people smiles unconcerned of danger, thinking that there’s no one All Might can’t save.

This meeting was relevant because it pushed Midoriya to ask All Might if there was a time he couldn’t save someone. It’s the first time Midoriya scratched the truth, that Shigaraki was doing what he was doing because he wasn’t saved by All Might.

On the opposite side though, during their chat Midoriya seemed again another person who didn’t see Shigaraki, that claimed he was merely destroying things for fun, when Shigaraki thinks, short after their meeting, that he too has a goal, which is not ‘having fun’.

His plan was basically doing something similar to what Touya wants to do with his father. Touya wants to hurt Enji as much as he was hurt, thinking this will force Enji to finally see him and his pain.

Shigaraki wants to hurt society as much as he was hurt, depriving them of All Might and causing enough destruction they’ll be forced to see how fragile their justice is… which is what he went through when All Might didn’t come to save him when his world shattered and no one else helped him either.

So the mention of the mall might have more meaning than just confirm Shigaraki is there, it could be the bridge to a discussion that proves that Midoriya finally sees Shigaraki and understands him.

But the story doesn’t show if this will happen or not because we move again to Skeptic and how he’s taking control of UA’s system.

Midoriya panics some more thinking if the school crashes down everyone will die and that he’ll have to make sure Kurogiri won’t allow Shigaraki to escape. However the blowback from the powered-up gearshift quirk is that he can’t get enough oxygen and so he’s basically out of breath.

The second user tells him to keep going and points out at how All for One can’t really keep the identities inside Shigaraki’s body united and that the vestiges can conveniently see into what he’s doing so they can point out how All for One can’t manipulate Shigaraki at the moment.

So Midoriya should take advantage of this.

At the same time it turns out Skeptic’s work is going to fail because La Brava, who is also an amazing hacker, is fighting him from another terminal.

The chapter ends here.

Now, I don’t care much about Skeptic because to me he felt mostly unlikable, possibly because beyond his loyalty to Re-Destro that would push him to do everything for Re-Destro’s cause and his hacking ability he wasn’t much developed. We saw him attacking Jin, trying to drive him mad and attempt to kill Himiko, then we saw him blaming Jin for the Hawk’s fiasco when he too was also to blame because his surveillance of Hawks left to be desired (Hawks even managed to revive Best Jeanist without him noticing!) and now he’s here in a safe shelter, taking control of the computers while the others are fighting with their lives on the line, looking down at everyone else.

Still, it feels a waste if this is all he was for. I mean, we had this big ‘UA will fall!’ that’s immediately waved away with a ‘Nope, La Brava is here to save the day’. I’m totally for La Brava saving the day, I love that we’ve someone who was previously a Villain, join the battle for the hero side, it seems to open the story to the idea that Villains can turn page, and, while I wasn’t crazy of the Gentle Criminal and La Brava arc, I liked their characters so I’m happy to see her back in action. But still it feels rushed.

The chapter, which is filled with summaries of what happened previously, tried to build an hype for UA falling that doesn’t even last till the end of the chapter. So… I’ve mixed feelings for this.

Also… I wanna take the chance to go back a little to All for One plan and how he predicted everything, from the ‘divide and conquer’ strategy to UA flying but… messed up the info he should give to Kurogiri?

I mean, if the whole point was to part him and Shigaraki, AFO’s instructions to Kurogiri should have been “Come to me and teleport me to Shigaraki”… not go to Shigaraki, Touya and Himiko and teleport them where they want to go. That was the priority. That is unless the micro device was a transmitter and it was actually Skeptic who gave Kurogiri info, which would explain how Skeptic knew Touya would get a free ride to Gunga courtesy of Kurogiri. And since AFO never officially joined the Paranormal Liberation Front or just felt a threat to it, Skeptic decided he would fulfil solely Shigaraki’s interest and make sure Re-Destro’s desires would be realized.

Which means if the tide turns again because AFO and Shigaraki couldn’t join forces it’ll be all Skeptic’s fault. I mean, I wouldn’t want this guy in my team, when the MLA went against the LOV he caused Twice to overcome his trauma, causing the MLA to lose its numerical advantage, when he was supposed to keep an eye on Hawks, Hawks actually managed to do as he preferred and now he might have caused their group to lose the hard gained advantage they had by getting Kurogiri back due to him giving Kurogiri the wrong instructions?

Whatever, we’ll see.

I know I've said it before but I just really love the interpretation of Hamlet as ace in an allonormative society

He's dealing with a literal family death and everyone's first thought is that he's upset that his gf is withholding her love. Polonius is so focused on splitting them up, then getting them together, and insists to the king and queen he's mad for Ophelia's love.

All of Hamlet's speeches condemning Claudius place equal (if not more) attention on his sexual actions than the fact he committed cold-blooded murder.

The one scene where Hamlet possibly gets violent on Ophelia, where one could expect some type of sexual request/harassment given the situation, is highlighted by Hamlet insisting she never have sex: get thee to a nunnery

Hello I am losing my mind at the implications of Mob using his powers in this past episode

He uses them to the point of exhaustion, just for fun! Just for his friends! Just like if it were any other characteristic!

He uses them to reach out and connect with others! The whole episode was full of hands reaching out and friends connecting, but he specifically uses his notoriously dangerous powers as a form of communication and connection!

He views them as a gift!!! When thinking of a gift to give he literally decided on his powers! This thing he used to view as a curse and a burden and he's talked about not wanting them anymore! And now he calls them a gift!!!

I'm convinced Horikoshi likes to purposefully put Hawks next to giant characters all the time now. Just to make him look smaller (small Hawks hc's are hilarious and it's fun to tease but I still stand that him being 5'8" doesn't make him short). Horikoshi must love to tease Hawks for whatever reason.

Gintoki’s Ideal Type

A while back when I did a post about Gintoki as a boyfriend, one thing I briefly mentioned was his ideal type. So I just wanted to take the time to expand on that.

Sidenote: one thing I frequently see with discussions involving Gintoki and love is that he ‘just doesn’t seem like the type to settle for one person.’ I would just like to note that I think Sorachi-sensei never intended for Gintoki (or any character) to have a romantic partner in the manga.

Because an underling message in Gintama - especially in Gintoki’s case - is overcoming personal struggles. The speech he gave in his fight against Kamui really captures this.

Gintama is also very much a manga built on family bonds and that you don’t have to be related by blood to be family. In Gintoki’s case, finding the family he never had.

But anyway back his ideal type lol. I just wanted to show why I think it is really possible for him to find love within the Gintama universe.

One thing Gintoki is really attracted to is someone’s smile. He tries to protect multiple characters smiles in multiple arcs. A smile is the most attractive physical trait to him. Ketsuno Ana could be used as the template for his ideal type with his massive crush on her. Even if it is just a childish celebrity crush.

Friendly, kind, down to earth, and always has a warm smile on her face. Even if it is for the most part a TV personality (though she is a genuinely good person) he seems to be fond of the opposite of the way he sees himself.

He’s been looked at and treated as a demon for a majority of his life. I mean think of the people he’s close to, all of them see him as human and not a monster. Of course he’s overcome those trials, and became human in the end. Which means romantically speaking, he needs/wants someone who accepts him as he is, flaws and all.

Falling back someone who’s kind, the man gets thrown around like a rag doll, pierced in the head, and stalked. He would really enjoy the company of someone who will sit down with him and just listen - and I mean he has done that when drunk with bartenders/shop owners. But it would be extra nice if it were a significant other.

Patience. He likes this mostly to handle Kagura and everyone else he’s close to, but doesn’t realize it’s needed to handle how he has a hard time expressing his emotions as well.

Notes for "See You After"

Chapter 45: July 27-Aug 6: Hero News Network, Shouto's Texts

The texts in this chapter were a last minute addition that more than doubled the chapter's wordcount. Some of it was supposed to be in a later chapter but I moved things around because I didn't want another chapter with only news articles so close to the previous one.

Of course, I do have notes on the articles again if anyone is interested. Or, if you're just here for additional context about Touya, skip to the very end of this post.

Articles notes

Article 1: UA to hold official graduation ceremony at newly-restored campus location

BNHA 359: Place of Learning

Tamaki's comment about wanting a graduation ceremony might seem like a small thing, but I really liked this small detail in the manga, which showed that even though they're fighting a war, they're still kids. Graduation is a huge milestone, one that they've been working toward for their whole lives, and it's sad that they had that taken away from them. (Honestly reminded me of the kids I worked with in 2020/2021 who didn't get their graduation or the other typical senior year experiences)

I like the idea of them getting to have that celebration after the fact, which would also be a sign that the world is starting to move forward again.

Article 2: Okuto Island Aquarium receives green light for rebuilding

BNHA 345: Division & 347: Inflation

The amount of rebuilding that would need to take place after the war is kind of hard to imagine, but I like to think that once the essential repairs are mostly completed, people would see the value in rebuilding a place that's not essential, but that brings people joy.

I like the idea that the civilians would step up to help as well instead of putting all of the responsibility on the heroes, as they've done in the past.

(plus, Shouto and Katsuki need somewhere to go for their penguin date when Shouto gets home)

Article 3: Is there a future for quirkless heroes?

(warning: spoilers up to manga ch. 416 below)

This article was longer than I intended, but there were a bunch of things that I decided I needed to include after recent chapters, especially Izuku ending up quirkless.

I've liked this theory for a while because it makes sense thematically, and now that the manga is actually going for it (unless HK pulls some bs out of nowhere), I decided to add it since it works really well with the upcoming section. I don't feel like writing a whole meta on this right now but here's some relevant canon scenes:

BNHA 1: Izuku Midoriya: Origin, 412: History's Maddest Hero

It would be interesting to see how the public reacts to the idea of quirkless heroes after the war, and I like the idea of Izuku continuing to be a hero with support gear and a shifting emphasis on teamwork rather than individuals with all-powerful abilities,

BNHA 386: I am here

However, I think there would definitely be concerns about making something like All Might's mech suit a go-to solution for a large number of heroes.

I think it would be interesting to see society grapple with the balance between providing support items to allow more people to become heroes, while also shifting away from the current hero system toward seeing the value of everyday acts of heroism from ordinary civilians that the story has been trying to point out in the background during the current arc.

BNHA 96: Home Visits, 340: the story of how we all became heroes pt. 3

I also think it would be interesting to see how the world continues to react to the heroes who lost their quirks. We've already seen that Ragdoll was still able to help even after she lost her quirk, and now that Hawks has lost his as well, he'll need to figure out how he's going to move forward (I guess he is actually making an appearance in this fic after all)

410: Farewell, All For One, 416: Wrench it open, Midoriya Izuku

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I like that quirks can't be returned so easily and that rewind can't be used to fix everything. But I'd imagine that some people wouldn't accept that so easily and would try to find a way to return everything to the status quo. And we already know the HPSC isn't above using children with useful quirks for the "greater good".

Article 4: Debate over Villains' Fate Continues

I'm not going to say much about this one other than that the fate of the villains an ongoing uncertainty in at this point in the narrative. Even though Shouto, Izuku and Ochako "saved" them, I can't imagine that the rest of society would be as ready to forgive. (for the purposes of this fic I'm assuming they all live, obviously)

This was a nice chance to add some commentary/context on the articles and what's happening in the world, and to show the kids supporting each other.

The first set of texts on 7/27 are a couple of days after the Todofam scene in Ch. 39, which is why Shouto wasn’t being super active in the group chat the previous week, as Izuku pointed out in their text conversation. Also, he didn’t answer the first group chat because he was at his therapy appointment (referenced in the text thread with Katsuki in Ch. 41)

The second set of texts (about game night) are after Shouto’s unsent letter in Ch. 44, so he’s doing a little better at that point.

I really enjoyed writing Shouto's second conversation with Izuku in particular. (Izuku’s nervous rambling was fun to write.)

Y'all knew this was coming, right? Can't have a Todofam healing subplot without adding fuel to the fire.

We'll be seeing more of Touya in Part III 😉

Also, the official reasoning for having him on quirk suppressants is mostly an excuse to give everyone peace of mind, knowing that he can't use his quirk. Way back in in Chapter 9, the article about quirk suppressants says that they're only approved for medical use and forcing prisoners to take a relatively new drug against their will would be questionable from an ethics standpoint, but I'm sure the prisons would find ways around that in the case of villains with certain quirks.

Do y'all think Dabi gets heatstroke easily?

Like, yeah, he burns himself when he uses his quirk and everything, but it never seems to slow him down or bother him too much post-dead nerves.

I'm imagining a scenario post-battle where the League is checking on each other, except for Dabi who won't let them near him because 'I'm Dabi and I'm a lone wolf etc etc", but after they start walking away from the scene, he's dragging behind the group a little.

Mister notices first, of course, because he seems to have taken up the role of group mother, but it only becomes a concern when Dabi trips and takes a moment to get up. At that point, everyone's around him and freaking out because Dabi you idiot why didn't you tell us you got hurt and he's trying to explain that this is normal and none of it means anything, and the rest of the League are not having it.

I feel like Tomura would know the most first-aid because he grew up with Kurogiri and also was trained for villainy since he was five, so he recognizes the symptoms first and insists that he takes off his black coat and that they figure out how to cool him down.

Dabi, who's been going through this since he was a kid is super confused and isn't sure what everyone is worried about because it's fine, he's fine, they don't need to be freaking out like this.

Season 3 details from that short little clip

Okay, so we got a small season 3 clip from Disney on one of their commercials, and I, of course, overanalyzed it. We only got 2 short scenes, but it was enough for me to go insane.

It looks like the episode is going to start a little bit before the end of the last one, with the squad outside of the broken portal house/door. The clothing and the injuries are the same, so I'm fairly certain it's the same scene and not them revisiting the house. Maybe we'll get a more detailed version of the scene right after with Gus crying and everyone else shell-shocked, or more details about going to Camila's.

Then we get this scene and I have a little more to go off of.

Okay, first of all, I love what the crew did with their extremely limited time. I love that they gave us so much and more with what little time they were allowed but imagining what could have been had they had the time they wanted hurts me.

I'm imagining a full-blown haircutting scene, where we get to see Hunter have a breakdown and Willow ask what's wrong, gently letting him set his own pace when he doesn't want to tell her.

I'm imagining Gus running all over town, torn between his excitement in seeing all the human treasures and wanting to go home.

Vee and Hunter maybe getting some interactions along the line of "hey dude you were a part of the regime that made and tortured me"

Amity and Luz getting to go on a small human date, both of them excited and guilty about enjoying themselves when Amity's world is in trouble, but still having fun.

Everyone looking at the statues of Philip and Caleb and noticing just how much Hunter looks like the latter, and Hunter being able to really find himself without the pressures of being the Golden Guard.

Camila interacting with the other kids more, telling Amity how much she's glad to be her potential mother-in-law, comforting Gus because he's so, so, young and her parental instincts are just clawing at her, realizing that there is something off about Hunter, but unable to put her finger on it, braiding Willow's hair and helping her through missing her dads. Also, I would have loved to see her interact with the palismen, because I just think it would have been cute.

Again, the crew did so well and gave us so much with their limited time, but imagining the episode stretched into a half-season? I'm devastated.

The way that Cybertronians move is very important to me.

Doorwings and antennae and little bits of kibble moving around to express their emotions make me so happy. Humans don't really have anything like that, so it's almost animalistic, but in the best way. It's almost like they don't realize they're doing it sometimes.

Of course, some shows don't do it very much, but when they do!!! It makes me very happy.

BnHA Volume 35 - A Brief Reaction Journey

hello! so as mentioned in my last post, I’ve started catching up with the BnHA manga again FINALLY after almost two years, and have made it through a fair number of chapters so far! and since I’m not sure how long it will take me to actually post the corresponding liveblogs, I figured I’d make a couple of posts in the meantime to sort of preview my reaction journey thus far with some good old-fashioned OUT-OF-CONTEXT BULLET POINTS taken from my ramblings. originally I was going to make a single post for all 25 chapters I’ve read so far (up to 367), but I quickly realized that was waaaaay too ambitious lol. so for now it’s just this one, and I’ll put up the vol. 36 post probably tomorrow afternoon.

spoiler warning: just fyi, this post will obviously feature spoilers for chapters 342-350*, BUT it will also include some stray spoilers from chapters 362 and 403 as well, so just a heads up for that if you aren’t fully caught up!

*chapters 340 and 341 are not included because I've already posted full reaction posts for each one here and here, respectively.

Endeavor being taller than Jeanist just feels so WRONG to me regardless of whether or not it is factually accurate. does this mean All Might is also taller than Jeanist?? I don’t want to live in a world where Best Jeanist has secretly been a perfectly normal sized person this entire time. someone please lie to me and tell me that he is tall
