“robin.”
she points at another one. “humphrey”
and again. “mary”
“kitty”
“thomas”
“fanny”
“captain”
“pat”
“julian”
she looks at them all, for the last time.
“goodbye.”

So does Captain just let Pat dictate his schedule for him? He’s all disappointed the club was over because he has nothing to do, so like does Pat just decide his schedule?

HAVERS TO RETURN IN SERIES 5
BE WARNED THIS POST CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE END OF EPISODE 4 OF GHOSTS.
I was watching episode 4 of Ghosts and noticed something during the monologue by Robin, where he explains that he gives each Ghost that moves on a star. Listing them he says: “Clarence, Godric, Elizabeth, William! HE LAUGHS. William! Annie…” And so on.
Notice that? William?
Where have we seen that name before?
Aha, a certain Lieutenant...
It’s also important to note that this episode was written by Ben Willbond, who also (alongside Simon Farnaby) wrote the episode in series 2, Redding Weddy, in which the name “William” is made reference to multiple times, including appearing on a letter in two different shots, and being said by The Captain to the other Ghosts. “Operation William it was called.”
The name William is heavily implied to be the name of The Captain’s second in command and secret infatuation, and the fandom has essentially taken it for gospel that Havers’ first name is in fact, William.
Something that was bugging me about this though is that surely, SURELY the name William would’ve elicited quite the response from The Captain, as he is often spotted in the background of shots, reacting to statements such as “I caught him… ‘pon the groundskeeper, with the butler ‘pon him!” (episode 1, series 1). So lets see The Captain’s reaction to Havers' name being said, not once, but TWICE.
Oh wait.
The Captain isn’t there to hear it. He’s gone off with Humphrey.
What an awful coincidence that he has been rather curiously tasked with updating Humphrey on the day's events when he is not particularly close with him at all (see series 3, episode 2). It’s almost as if Ben didn’t want us to see Cap’s reaction to Havers’ name being mentioned because it would be a DEAD GIVEAWAY.
I rationalised myself by saying that the names Robin mentioned are in order of who moved on at what time, meaning this simply cannot be OUR William, as we know Annie, who's name comes after William in Robin's list, moved on during the regency era (refer back to "Thomas Thorne Affair"). BUT, upon doing some light research, the name “Clarence” (which is the first name to be mentioned by Robin) came into prevalence in the year 1880, MUCH LATER than when "Godric", a rather viking sounding name (and the second name said by Robin) would’ve been popular.
But it's all so convenient, isn’t it? How come Havers was a ghost at button house for a time? How would he have even died? Let's hark back to the DVD extra, where Robin gives a tour of the house…
“And library! Man murdered in library- oh, not allowed to talk about that yet.”

Gonna potentially ruffle some feathers here and say that I think the people who disliked s4 are mostly those who think the only important character is The Captain. I get that you want specific things to happen for certain characters, and trust me I’m not without my biases towards certain (other) characters or storylines, but I really do think that objectively the writing is still really good, funny and emotional like always. The Idiots clearly know that The Captain’s storyline is going to be a big one for people so I have NO idea why people expect it to be addressed directly this soon? Like, we basically know there will be a series 5 at this point, it seems like a no-brainer to me that The Captain’s storyline will be one of the LAST ones they do, because they KNOW people are waiting for it. So I was surprised anyone expected anything deeper this season for him. They’re setting that up, playing the long game, and I think it’ll pay off when they do but it’d be a waste to do that and then have another season without a big emotional reveal left to explore… then series 5 would really feel like filler. So I get why they’re obviously intentionally saving it, it hasn’t been ignored and they’re NOT queerbaiting by not having explicitly having him ‘come out’ yet (I saw someone actually say they were and it pissed me off like crazy because they’ve not made his sexuality at all ambiguous, he’s clearly gay and it’s not queerbaiting, he’s just still as a character working through a LOT of repression and hasn’t been able to vocalize it in specific terms yet which MAKES PERFECT SENSE for the characterization and does not mean he’s not actually gay just because he hasn’t said the words ‘I’m gay’). Ugh genuinely bugged me to read that, people need to stop thinking that there’s only one valid way to show representation.

I don't understand why people are upset that the Captain didn't come out this season. I get why people want it because it's representation, and it's something I want too, but it was just last season he seemed to accept himself and it's not realistic for someone to come out immediately after figuring themself out. Most people in real life don't do that.
(also it's not queerbaiting it is literally canon)
