BMW Series 8 E31 Convertible (one-off)
The roots of the current BMW 8 Series Convertible can be traced back to the 1990s when BMW mulled over the option of offering an E31-based convertible and produced a one-off model as part of the project. Very little is known about this project as BMW tried to keep it behind closed doors as much as possible. What can be said for sure is that work on the E31 8 Series Convertible began in 1989 and continued towards the end of 1990.
The fate of the open-top 8 Series was concealed due to a mix of factors. The early 1990s saw Europe’s economies in quite an eventful geopolitical situations. Upon fear that the 8 Series Convertible would not be successful enough in terms of sales to justify its high development and production costs, the project never got the approval from the BMW top management for series production.
What is known for sure is that, if greenlighted, an E31 8 Series Convertible would have been a drop-dead gorgeous vehicle, with a mind-blowing silhouette and epic proportions. The Convertible managed to accentuate the sheer beauty and elegance of the 8 Series Coupe one step further.
Likely, the Convertible would have been offered with all the engine variants available for the 8 Series Coupe. The test bed for the project was the 850i version, powered by the 5.0-liter M70 V12 petrol engine, developing a peak output of 300 PS / 296 hp.Imagine what a great collectors car would have been the 850CSi Convertible, for example. Powered by the heavily reworked S70 12-cylinder aggregate, the range-topping open-top 8 Series would have benefitted from a substantially enhanced powertrain and would have been capable of reaching a maximum output of 280 kW / 381 PS (375 hp). I can only imagine how bloody sensational and exclusive an ALPINA B12 5.7 Convertible would have been. Packed with 416 PS (410 hp), a manual gearbox, add in a sunny day and some gentle wind in your hair and there you could have had the recipe for a ride in pure style. During the project, the BMW 850i Convertible prototype has been subjected to both in-door testing in the aerodynamic wind tunnel and outdoor, on-street proofing, in camouflaged outfit like every future model.
Probably, as the rigid roof was replaced by a retractable soft-top, the E31 8 Series Convertible needed additional torsional rigidity measures to be taken, which meant extra weight was added to the car in the body reinforcement process. In the end, it was concluded that, even though it could have been an attractive proposition in the segment and for the 8 Series lineup as well, the Convertible variant would have been a slow seller given the market context of those years.

Diabetes Lecture
Dr. Samaan
8/23/23
HgbA1c 5.7%-6.4% is prediabetes
HgbA1c 6.5% is diabetic
Normal HgbA1c 4.8-5.6% is normal
DM: A1c 6.5%, BG 126, random BG >200 with symptoms
The A1c has to be a lab draw in order for you to use it to make the diagnosis. So a POC HgbA1c doesn’t count to make the diagnosis.
Screen everyone age 40-70 who are overweight or have risk factors; younger than 40 and obese with risk factor; screen q1-3 years. Risk factors: HDL<35, TG >250, depression, on atypical antipsychotics, high risk populations (non-white), OSA/sleep issues, HIV+ for 15+ years on meds. Old HIV meds caused endocrine issues. Newer HIV meds don’t unless they’ve been on them for a long time.
You don’t need to be fasting to check HgbA1c. Not covered as screening by CMS. A1c not accurate in GDM, renal failure, anemias, renal failure, liver disease.
Prediabetes: 5-7% weight loss will cut the risk of progressing to diabetes by 1/2! Moderate exercise: of 150 minutes a week (e.g., brisk walking 3+ mph), water aerobics, bicycling 10 mph or less, tennis (doubles), gardening—OR 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise a week.
Metformin started in prediabetics decreases progression by 31%! Shown to decrease CVD risk. Works best for BMI>35. Metformin can cause low B12. We should use “med monitoring” code annually in pts on metformin. Diarrhea is a common adverse effect. If pt can’t leave the house because of the diarrhea, try the extended release form.
GLP1 agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors could be used in prediabetics. It’s in the works.
If A1c of 9 and BG >200, you will have less fatigue, polyuria, blurred visions, skin infections.
A1c <7.5 à improved quality of life and increased productivity at work
Goal A1c is <7%
Tighter control in younger pts is ok.
Older pts can have A1c goal of 8.0%; avoid hypoglycemia and side effects of increased meds.
Metformin and lifestyle modifications are first line management.
You can start with something other than metformin, but insurance might not cover it.
DM education can help drop A1c by 0.6% or more. WDH and PRH have diabetes education classes.
Diabetic Benchmarks/Screenings:
Statins! All diabetics over 40 should be on moderate to high intensity statin. Under 40 if additional CVD risk factors.
Pts with DM have increased number of small LDL particles which tend to be more associated with ASCVD.
DM is the leading cause of CKD. Check urine microalbumin yearly. ACE/ARB is HTN and proteinuria, urine Cr >300. Go yearly for dilated eye exam. DM is the #1 cause of blindness in the US.
Nerve damage causes the fat pad on the sole of the foot to move, leaving decreased cushioning which predisposes to diabetic foot ulcers. Foot exam should be every visit if loss of sensation. Should do a foot exam annually. Check the skin, document hammer toe, charcot foot, bunion, pes planus.
Get an Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) if you cannot palpate a pulse. Get Toe Brachial Index (TBI) if ABI is not accurate.
Document presence of diabetic neuropathy. Assess for B12 deficiency, TSH, metals, etc.
Metformin, statin, annual vision screen and urine microalbumin, foot exams, diabetes education.
Sulfonylureas (e.g., glipizide) have no long-term benefits, cause hypoglycemia.

Nutritional Value Of 3 Types of Meat
Tumblr media
Meat is one of the foods with high nutritional value, the meat of warm-blooded animals such as pork, beef, and poultry… contains many essential amino acids, fats, minerals, vitamins, and a number of aromatic substances, also known as extracts. Meat of all kinds is generally poor in calcium and rich in phosphorus. Low CA/P ratio.
Vitamins: Meat is a source of B vitamins, of which B1 is mainly concentrated in lean meat. Fat-soluble vitamins are found only in the liver and kidneys. In addition, there are many cholesterol and phosphates in the liver, kidney, heart, and brain.
Beef
Beef is cattle meat, classified as red meat. It contains higher levels of iron than chicken or fish. Beef can be processed in many different ways such as grilled, steak, steamed,… Beef products are diverse including smoked beef, beef jerky, sausage, beef trotters…
Fresh, lean beef is rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iron and zinc. Therefore, consuming moderate amounts of beef can be recommended as part of a healthy diet.
Nutritional Composition of Beef
Beef consists mainly of protein and varying amounts of fat. Nutritional ingredients from beef in 100 grams of edible include:
Energy: 182 kcal
Protein: 21.5 grams
Lipids: 10.7 grams
Glucose: 0 grams
Fiber: 0 grams
Vitamins: Vitamin A (12 mcg), vitamin PP (4.5 mg), vitamin B6 (0.44 mg), vitamin B12 (3.05 mcg)…
Minerals: Iron (3.1 mg), magnesium (28 mg), zinc (3.64 mg), copper (160 mg), calcium (12 mg)…

Pork
Many studies have proven that the nutritional components of pork have a very good impact on human health, which can reduce the risks of disease.
Pork provides a full range of nutritional components, providing protein, fat, vitamins, and mineral salts for the body.
Nutritional Composition of Pork
Half-lean - half-fat pork contains 16.5g protein, 21.5g fat, 9mg calcium, 178mg phosphorus, 1.5mg iron, 1.91mg zinc, 285mg potassium, 55mg sodium, 10μg vitamin A.
Lean pork contains: 19g protein, 7g fat, 7mg calcium, 190mg phosphorus, 1.5mg iron, 2.5mg zinc, 341mg potassium, 76mg sodium, and 2μg vitamin A.
Fatty pork contains: 14.5g protein, 37.3g fat, 8mg calcium, 156mg phosphorus, 0.4mg iron, 1.59mg zinc, 318mg potassium, 42mg sodium, 2μg vitamin A.
Chicken
Poultry meat is lower in cholesterol than red meat, such as pork and beef, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In addition, chicken meat has most of the unsaturated fat in poultry, which is considered healthy.
Chicken Breast: 284 Calories
Chicken breast is one of the most popular choices due to its high protein and low fat content, making it a great food for people trying to lose weight.
One cooked, skinless, boneless chicken breast (172 grams) provides the following nutrition facts:
Calories: 284
Protein: 53.4 grams
Carbs: 0 grams
Fat: 6.2 grams
A 100-gram serving of chicken breast provides 165 calories, 31 grams of protein, and 3.6 grams of fat.
That means about 80% of the calories in chicken breast come from protein and only 20% come from fat. However, this is a rough calculation, ie without adding any other ingredients to your dish: eg sauces, cooking oils, or vegetables,…
Read more: How Much Chicken Breasts?
Chicken Thighs: 109 Calories
Chicken thighs are slightly softer and have a better flavor than chicken breasts due to their higher fat content.
One cooked skinless, boneless, chicken thigh (52 grams) contains:
Calories: 109
Protein: 13.5 grams
Carbs: 0 grams
Fat: 5.7 grams
A 100-gram chicken thigh provides 209 calories, 26 grams of protein, and 10.9 grams of fat.
Thus, 53% of calories come from protein, while 47% come from fat.
Chicken thighs are often cheaper than chicken breasts, making them a good choice when you're on a tight budget.
So about 70% comes from protein while 30% comes from fat.

Ranking The Fastest German Sports Cars Of The '90s | HotCars
New Post has been published on https://coolcarsnews.com/ranking-the-fastest-german-sports-cars-of-the-90s-hotcars/
Ranking The Fastest German Sports Cars Of The '90s | HotCars
Tumblr media
The Germans are no pushovers in the automobile world, with established powerhouses like Mercedes Benz, BMW, and the Volkswagen Group. The cars they churn out are not only well regarded for their build quality but they also have an established reputation for performance. There are no shortages of high-performance machines; cars that pack a serious punch when it comes to speed and acceleration.
The ‘90s era sports cars that emerged from Germany still possess the ability to impress even by today’s standards. Some of the cars featured here are no strangers, but there are a few others that will prove quite a revelation.
10 1992 BMW M3 (E36) - 155.3 MPH
Tumblr media
via supercars.net
This M3 is widely regarded as one of the best BMW ‘M’ cars. In 1997, it was even voted the best-handling car by Car and Driver. That handling was down to a superbly balanced chassis and suspension setup.
Tumblr media
via autocar
The BMW M3 was not all about the handling and a 155mph top speed served up proof that the car could move very briskly indeed if given a long enough road-stretch. That performance came courtesy of an inline-6 engine that put out as much as 321hp.
9 Porsche 968 Club Sport - 156 MPH
Tumblr media
via classic
Porsche’s reputation for building epic sports cars took a hit after the lack-lustre Porsche 968. It took some drastic action on the part of the German carmaker to restore that reputation. That action was in form of the Porsche 968 Club Sport, a stripped-down version of the original 968.
Tumblr media
via cameronsportscars
It was 100kg lighter and earned praise for its significantly better handling and driving experience. It was quick off the line too, with a 4.7-second sprint time to 60mph and a claimed 156mph top speed.
8 1993 Isdera Imperator 108i - 176 MPH
Tumblr media
via YouTube
The little-known Isdera Imperator was based on an equally obscure Mercedes Benz CW311 concept. The wedge-shaped car was designed, complete with a tubular space-frame chassis and gull-wing doors. Power was supplied by a Mercedes-sourced engine that generated as much as 420hp.
Tumblr media
via outstandingcars
That power, mated to a 5-speed manual, was enough to send the sports-car oddity to a 176mph top speed. The car had a production run of 30 units before the designers moved on to the next project - the Isdera Commendatore. Unfortunately, that project never emerged from the concept stage.

7 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S - 183 MPH
Tumblr media
via mecum
This was the most extreme production 911 when it launched, with a potent flat-6 that delivered all of 424hp in the driver's control. That power was fed to all four wheels via a standard 6-speed manual transmission.
Tumblr media
via dupontregistry
Acceleration in this car is brutal and you can expect a 0 to 100mph sprint in less than 10 seconds. There’s also that 183mph top speed which made the 911 Turbo S the perfect weapon to assault the famous German Autobahn.
6 1994 BMW Alpina B12 5.7 Coupe - 186 MPH
Tumblr media
via reddit
During the first-generation run of the BMW 8-Series, there was never formally an M8 but that did not stop Alpina from making a high-performance variant of their own; and what a car it turned out to be. It was based on the existing 850CSi.
Tumblr media
via classic
Various mechanical tweaks under the hood boosted the engine output to 416bhp, 41 extra horses over the stock car’s 375bhp. It was a limited-edition vehicle, limited to less than 60 units. However, the lucky owners got to experience the car’s sublime performance and blistering top speed.
5 1998 Mercedes Benz SL73 AMG - 186 MPH
Tumblr media
via thedrive
This is one of the rarest AMG models ever built with a production run that ended well short of 100 units. AMG engineers created this monster by taking 6.0-litre V12 from the SL600 and bumping the displacement up to 7.3 litres; the largest displacement V12 ever fitted on any road-going Mercedes Benz.
Tumblr media
via motor1
The SL73 AMG could whip up 525hp and 553 pound-feet of torque. The SL73 AMG is big and ungainly to look at but that power meant it could hit an astounding 186mph top speed.

4 1997 RUF Turbo R Limited - 192.6 MPH
Tumblr media
via carrevsdaily
RUF is a German auto company that’s legally regarded as an independent manufacturer, a recognition that was secured in 1981. Their products are usually based on Porsche cars but then they literally take everything apart and rebuild it, making it significantly more potent.
Tumblr media
via msn
The RUF Turbo R is based on the Porsche Type 993 Turbo. The power output is a remarkable 620bhp at 6,800rpm, compared to ‘just’ 408bhp for the Type 993. The Turbo R can sprint to 60mph in 3.5 seconds and continue to accelerate until it maxes out at around 190mph.
3 Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion - 194 MPH
Tumblr media
via motorauthority
The 911 GT1 race car was developed by Porsche to compete in the GT1 class of sports car racing. For this reason, they had to build street-legal versions as part of homologation requirements. That road-going version was dubbed the 911 GT1 Straßenversion simply translated to mean ‘Street version’.
Tumblr media
via supercars.net
The car was capable of hitting 60mph, from a standing start, in 3.6 seconds and then power on to a top speed in excess of 190mph. Porsche built less than 30 units of this beast and today, it is not uncommon for them to change hands at a price well north of a million dollars.
Related: These German Sedans Make Most Sports Cars Look Slow
2 Mercedes-AMG CLK GTR - 214 MPH
Tumblr media
via topgear
This sports car was one of the highlights of Mercedes Benz in the ‘90s; a thoroughbred race car that somehow managed to be road-legal, albeit with a few modifications. The car drew its power from a naturally aspirated V12 monster that cranked out 612bhp at 6,800rpm and 568 pound-feet of torque at 5,250rpm.
Tumblr media
via motorious
The road-legal version of the car weighed all of 3,400 pounds, thanks to creature comforts like air-conditioning and elaborate sound proofing. However, it could still power on to 60mph in 3.2 seconds and in race trim, had a top speed that exceeded 200mph.
1 Dauer 962 Le Mans Porsche - 251.4 MPH
Tumblr media
via supercars.net
A 2.7-second 0 to 60mph sprint time meant this extreme machine had very few challengers in the automotive space. It also ranked among the fastest with a top speed in excess of 250mph.
Tumblr media
via supercars.net
This was essentially a road-legal variant of the Porsche 962, one of the most successful Porsche racing cars ever made. This incredible car weighed just over 1,000kg and a 730bhp power output meant it had a better power-to-weight ratio than even the legendary McLaren F1.
