Numbers 26: God Tells Moses And Eleazar To Take A Second Census Of The Israelites

1 After the plague the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest,

2 “Take a census of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army of Israel.”

3 So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said,

4 “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:

5 The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel, were:

through Hanok, the Hanokite clan;

through Pallu, the Palluite clan;

6 through Hezron, the Hezronite clan;

through Karmi, the Karmite clan.

7 These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.

8 The son of Pallu was Eliab,

9 and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord.

10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign.

11 The line of Korah, however, did not die out.

12 The descendants of Simeon by their clans were:

through Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan;

through Jamin, the Jaminite clan;

through Jakin, the Jakinite clan;

13 through Zerah, the Zerahite clan;

through Shaul, the Shaulite clan.

14 These were the clans of Simeon; those numbered were 22,200.

15 The descendants of Gad by their clans were:

through Zephon, the Zephonite clan;

through Haggi, the Haggite clan;

through Shuni, the Shunite clan;

16 through Ozni, the Oznite clan;

through Eri, the Erite clan;

17 through Arodi, the Arodite clan;

through Areli, the Arelite clan.

18 These were the clans of Gad; those numbered were 40,500.

19 Er and Onan were sons of Judah, but they died in Canaan.

20 The descendants of Judah by their clans were:

through Shelah, the Shelanite clan;

through Perez, the Perezite clan;

through Zerah, the Zerahite clan.

21 The descendants of Perez were:

through Hezron, the Hezronite clan;

through Hamul, the Hamulite clan.

22 These were the clans of Judah; those numbered were 76,500.

23 The descendants of Issachar by their clans were:

through Tola, the Tolaite clan;

through Puah, the Puite clan;

24 through Jashub, the Jashubite clan;

through Shimron, the Shimronite clan.

25 These were the clans of Issachar; those numbered were 64,300.

26 The descendants of Zebulun by their clans were:

through Sered, the Seredite clan;

through Elon, the Elonite clan;

through Jahleel, the Jahleelite clan.

27 These were the clans of Zebulun; those numbered were 60,500.

28 The descendants of Joseph by their clans through Manasseh and Ephraim were:

29 The descendants of Manasseh:

through Makir, the Makirite clan (Makir was the father of Gilead);

through Gilead, the Gileadite clan.

30 These were the descendants of Gilead:

through Iezer, the Iezerite clan;

through Helek, the Helekite clan;

31 through Asriel, the Asrielite clan;

through Shechem, the Shechemite clan;

32 through Shemida, the Shemidaite clan;

through Hepher, the Hepherite clan.

33 (Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons; he had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah.)

34 These were the clans of Manasseh; those numbered were 52,700.

35 These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans:

through Shuthelah, the Shuthelahite clan;

through Beker, the Bekerite clan;

through Tahan, the Tahanite clan.

36 These were the descendants of Shuthelah:

through Eran, the Eranite clan.

37 These were the clans of Ephraim; those numbered were 32,500.

These were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.

38 The descendants of Benjamin by their clans were:

through Bela, the Belaite clan;

through Ashbel, the Ashbelite clan;

through Ahiram, the Ahiramite clan;

39 through Shupham, the Shuphamite clan;

through Hupham, the Huphamite clan.

40 The descendants of Bela through Ard and Naaman were:

through Ard, the Ardite clan;

through Naaman, the Naamite clan.

41 These were the clans of Benjamin; those numbered were 45,600.

42 These were the descendants of Dan by their clans:

through Shuham, the Shuhamite clan.

These were the clans of Dan: 43 All of them were Shuhamite clans; and those numbered were 64,400.

44 The descendants of Asher by their clans were:

through Imnah, the Imnite clan;

through Ishvi, the Ishvite clan;

through Beriah, the Beriite clan;

45 and through the descendants of Beriah:

through Heber, the Heberite clan;

through Malkiel, the Malkielite clan.

46 (Asher had a daughter named Serah.)

47 These were the clans of Asher; those numbered were 53,400.

48 The descendants of Naphtali by their clans were:

through Jahzeel, the Jahzeelite clan;

through Guni, the Gunite clan;

49 through Jezer, the Jezerite clan;

through Shillem, the Shillemite clan.

50 These were the clans of Naphtali; those numbered were 45,400.

51 The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.

52 The Lord said to Moses,

53 “The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.

54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those listed.

55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot. What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe.

56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”

57 These were the Levites who were counted by their clans:

through Gershon, the Gershonite clan;

through Kohath, the Kohathite clan;

through Merari, the Merarite clan.

58 These also were Levite clans:

the Libnite clan,

the Hebronite clan,

the Mahlite clan,

the Mushite clan,

the Korahite clan.

(Kohath was the forefather of Amram;

59 the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses and their sister Miriam.

60 Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)

62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000. They were not counted along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance among them.

63 These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.

64 Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai.

65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

5 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they[a] had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

->-> Let's now recall what the Canaanites "royals" or "jealous people" are. Of the Seven Clans, occupying the Promised Land, the Canaanites are Fourth. Also recall they are aligned with the evolutionary states:

The First Day: Hittites "who fears".

The Second Day: Girgashites "thieves, infertile",

The Third Day: Amorites "talkers",

The Fourth Day: Canaanites "royals",

The Fifth Day: Perizzites "rural villager",

The Sixth Day: Hivites "tent villagers" and

The Seventh Day: Jebusites "those trodden down".

"They expose the future not through divination (as with Balak) but by listening to the Speaker, who gives my ear, a fugitive, all the knowledge God has given us in the past."

19 Er "a city, aroused" and Onan "vigor, from trouble" were sons of Judah "praise", but they died in Canaan.

20 The descendants of Judah by their clans were:

through Shelah "Peace" , the Shelanite clan;

through Perez "the breakthrough", the Perezite clan;

through Zerah "the dawn" , the Zerahite clan.

21 The descendants of Perez were:

through Hezron "the cluster, the village", the Hezronite clan;

26 The descendants of Zebulun "Village of honor" by their clans were:

through Sered "vat for dying" , the Seredite clan;

through Elon "oak tree", the Elonite clan;

through Jahleel "God waits", the Jahleelite clan.

27 These were the clans of Zebulun; those numbered were 60,500.

28 The descendants of Joseph "Fruitful" by their clans through Manasseh "to forget" and Ephraim "most fruitful" were:

Through Makir "to know" , the Makirite clan (Makir was the father of Gilead);

through Gilead "testimony stones", the Gileadite clan.

30 These were the descendants of Gilead:

through Helek, "portion, smoothness" the Helekite clan;

31 through Asriel "God has filled with Joy" , the Asrielite clan;

through Hepher "shame", the Hepherite clan.

33 (Zelophehad "shadow of fear" son of Hepher had no sons; he had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah "disease" , Noah "respite, from violence", Hoglah "partridge", Milkah "of counsel" and Tirzah "Goodwill".)

34 These were the clans of Manasseh; those numbered were 52,700.

35 These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans:

through Shuthelah "brought low before Yah", the Shuthelahite clan;

through Beker, "camel calf" the Bekerite clan;

through Tahan "encampment", the Tahanite clan.

36 These were the descendants of Shuthelah:

through Eran "focused", the Eranite clan.

37 These were the clans of Ephraim; those numbered were 32,500.

These were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.

38 The descendants of Benjamin by their clans were:

through Bela "bala, the swallowing" , the Belaite clan;

through Ashbel "firelord", the Ashbelite clan;

through Ahiram "brother of height, of the loft", the Ahiramite clan;

39 through Shupham,[c] "burrowing snake" "ruff!"the Shuphamite clan;

through Hupham, "canopy" the Huphamite clan.

40 The descendants of Bela through Ard and Naaman were:

through Ard,[d] "to flee" the Ardite clan;

through Naaman, "pleasantness" the Naamite clan.

41 These were the clans of Benjamin "Right Hand" ; those numbered were 45,600.

42 These were the descendants of Dan "the Judge" by their clans:

through Shuham, "to be humbled" the Shuhamite clan.

These were the clans of Dan: 43 All of them were Shuhamite clans; and those numbered were 64,400.

44 The descendants of Asher "happiness" by their clans were:

through Imnah "right side of prosperity", the Imnite clan;

through Ishvi, "man of Yah" the Ishvite clan;

through Beriah "son of evil", the Beriite clan;

45 and through the descendants of Beriah:

through Heber, "a binding spell" the Heberite clan;

through Malkiel "God is my King" , the Malkielite clan.

46 (Asher had a daughter named Serah "Princess Senate".)

47 These were the clans of Asher; those numbered were 53,400.

48 The descendants of Naphtali "the struggler" by their clans were:

through Jahzeel "the will of God", the Jahzeelite clan;

through Guni, "to color" the Gunite clan;

49 through Jezer "Island of hope" , the Jezerite clan;

through Shillem, "recompense" the Shillemite clan.

50 These were the clans of Naphtali; those numbered were 45,400.

="Happiness, the right kind is the result of struggle with dark principals. Sons of Yah fight the sons of evil with these binding spells (the torah tantras) from within government that recognizes God is God and His Will is the creation of an Island of Hope where all men are of one color. This belief pays dividends to everyone."

51 The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.

the Korahite "to be near God" clan.

63 These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab "strife" by the Jordan "the descendant" across from Jericho "fragrant place". 64 Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai "I brought you to me". 65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb "faithful" son of Jephunneh "Beholds" and Joshua " deliverer" son of Nun "faith".

="To behold God, the source of all happiness, is all the help one needs."

Zelophehad’s Daughters

27 The daughters of Zelophehad "ruptures fear" son of Hepher "dig, shame", the son of Gilead "testimony stones" , the son of Makir "to know", the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. Whose daughters names were Mahlah "disease" , Noah "respite, from violence", Hoglah "partridge", Milkah "queen of counsel" and Tirzah "Goodwill"

= "The Ephod, the imprint of the Principals upon the current generation by those of the past ruptures fear and digs out the shame, reveals it and allows us to put it behind us. The call of goodwill ends the diseases, provides respite from violence."

They came forward 2 and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, 3 “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s "bald, frosty, without intelligence" followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. 4 Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

5 So Moses brought their case before the Lord, 6 and the Lord said to him, 7 “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.

="You may not leave a land that is war torn and in a state of upheaval to future generations to figure out."

8 “Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim "across the Jordan" Range and see the land I have given the Israelites. 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin "thorns, dry place", both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh "Holy place of strife, in the Desert of Zin.)

=We must leave whatever it is that causes strife on our world behind. We have to "cross the Jordan" into Canaan, an era where the Principals named in the Censes rule the land.

This is not an option. We are indentured to this by the Maker of Heaven and Earth, their Owner and Supreme Governor.

15 Moses said to the Lord,

16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

The Book of Joshua Continues:

Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.[b]

=Verb גבה (gaba) means to collect. Nouns גב (geb), גוב (gob), גבי (gobay) and גובי (gobay) refer to locusts. Possibly a whole other verb גבה (gabah) means to be high, exalted or lofty, although this verb could actually describe a person who collected a heap, or who plunders a society like a swarm of locusts. In the Talmud the word for tax collector was derived from this verb. Adjective גבה (gaboah) means high or haughty. Noun גבה (gobah) means height or haughtiness. And noun גבהות (gabhut) means haughtiness.

-> The Fourth Plague is a swarm of locusts. I'm getting a very bad impression of these Canaanites, but a lasting good impression about circumcision.

4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt. 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.

9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal[c] to this day.

10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. 12 The manna stopped the day after[d] they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.

-> Recall in Genesis where God said if we behave he doesn't care who we eat.

The Fall of Jericho

13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord[e] have for his servant?”

15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Conclusion: My boy is getting done dirtier than Hades in modern representation. Ares is one of the least problematic Gods in the pantheon (except for the murders, I will grant you) and ya’ll are sleeping on him.

5 The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel, were: through Hanok, the Hanokite clan; through Pallu, the Palluite clan;

6 through Hezron, the Hezronite clan; through Karmi, the Karmite clan.

7 These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.

8 The son of Pallu was Eliab, 9 and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord. 10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign. 11 The line of Korah, however, did not die out.

12 The descendants of Simeon by their clans were: through Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan; through Jamin, the Jaminite clan; through Jakin, the Jakinite clan;

13 through Zerah, the Zerahite clan; through Shaul, the Shaulite clan.

There were few people he trusted, especially when it came to those he cared for. So when she fell ill, he couldn’t help that the first thought went to something less than pleasant, less than innocent. His mind always went to the darker side of capabilities that people and gods possessed. Maybe that was because he often saw the darkness they were capable of due to his own nature. Still, he holds her hand in his softly, watching her closely. He almost dared not leave her side until she showed signs of being better. Her mumbled words soon followed and even though it was nice to hear, it did little to change the concern etched into his features. “Are you sure?” Ares questions, one hand moving to wipe at the sweat on her brow. “You can’t blame me for worrying, can you?”

2 *Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonné? Pourquoi t'éloignes-tu sans me secourir, sans écouter mes plaintes?

3 Mon Dieu, je crie le jour, et tu ne réponds pas, la nuit, et je ne trouve pas de repos. 4 Pourtant tu es le Saint, tu sièges au milieu des louanges d'Israël.

5 C'est en toi que nos ancêtres se confiaient: ils se confiaient en toi, et tu les délivrais;

6 ils criaient à toi, et ils étaient sauvés; ils se confiaient en toi, et ils n'étaient pas déçus. 7 Mais moi, je suis un ver et non un homme, la honte de l'humanité, celui que le peuple méprise. 8 Tous ceux qui me voient se moquent de moi, ils ricanent, ils hochent la tête:

10 Oui, tu m'as fait sortir du ventre de ma mère, tu m'as mis en sécurité contre sa poitrine; 11 dès ma conception j'ai été sous ta garde, dès le ventre de ma mère tu as été mon Dieu. 12 Ne t'éloigne pas de moi quand la détresse est proche, quand personne ne vient à mon secours! 13 De nombreux taureaux sont autour de moi, des taureaux du Basan m'encerclent.

14 Ils ouvrent leur gueule contre moi, pareils au lion qui déchire et rugit. 15 Mes forces s'en vont comme l'eau qui s'écoule, et tous mes os se disloquent; mon coeur est comme de la cire, il se liquéfie au fond de moi.

16 Ma force se dessèche comme l'argile, et ma langue s'attache à mon palais; tu me réduis à la poussière de la mort. 17 Oui, des chiens m'environnent, une bande de scélérats rôdent autour de moi; ils ont percé mes mains et mes pieds.

18 Je pourrais compter tous mes os; eux, ils observent, ils me regardent, 19 *ils se partagent mes vêtements, ils tirent au sort mon habit.

20 Mais toi, Eternel, ne t'éloigne pas! Toi qui es ma force, viens vite à mon secours! 21 Protège mon âme contre l'épée, ma vie contre le pouvoir des chiens!

Nouveau recensement26 A la suite de ce fléau, l'Eternel dit à Moïse et à Eléazar, le fils du prêtre Aaron:

2 «Faites le dénombrement de toute l'assemblée des Israélites âgés de 20 ans et plus en fonction de leur famille, de tous les membres du peuple d'Israël aptes au service militaire.»

3 Moïse et le prêtre Eléazar leur parlèrent dans les plaines de Moab, près du Jourdain, vis-à-vis de Jéricho. Ils dirent:

4 «On fera le dénombrement des hommes âgés de 20 ans et plus, comme l'Eternel l'avait ordonné à Moïse et aux Israélites à leur sortie d'Egypte.»

5 Ruben était l'aîné d'Israël. Voici les descendants de Ruben: Hénoc dont descend le clan des Hénokites, Pallu dont descend celui des Palluites,

6 Hetsron dont descend celui des Hetsronites, Carmi dont descend celui des Carmites. 7 Tels sont les clans des Rubénites. On dénombra 43'730 hommes.

8 Descendant de Pallu: Eliab. 9 Fils d'Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan et Abiram. C'est ce Dathan et cet Abiram qui faisaient partie des hommes convoqués à l'assemblée et qui se soulevèrent contre Moïse et Aaron avec la bande des partisans de Koré, lors de leur révolte contre l'Eternel.

10 La terre s'entrouvrit et les engloutit avec Koré, quand ceux qui s'étaient rassemblés moururent et que le feu dévora les 250 hommes: ils servirent d'avertissement au peuple.

11 Quant aux fils de Koré, ils ne moururent pas. 12 Voici les descendants de Siméon en fonction de leur clan: de Nemuel descend le clan des Nemuélites, de Jamin celui des Jaminites, de Jakin celui des Jakinites,

13 de Zérach celui des Zérachites, de Saül celui des Saülites. 14 Tels sont les clans des Siméonites. On dénombra 22'200 hommes.

15 Voici les descendants de Gad en fonction de leur clan: de Tsephon descend le clan des Tsephonites, de Haggi celui des Haggites, de Shuni celui des Shunites, 16 d'Ozni celui des Oznites, d'Eri celui des Erites, 17 d'Arod celui des Arodites, d'Areéli celui des Areélites. 18 Tels sont les clans des descendants de Gad. On dénombra 40'500 hommes.

19 Les fils de Juda étaient Er et Onan, mais ils moururent dans le pays de Canaan.

20 Voici donc les descendants de Juda en fonction de leur clan: de Shéla descend le clan des Shélanites, de Pérets celui des Péretsites, de Zérach celui des Zérachites.

21 Les fils de Pérets furent Hetsron, dont descend le clan des Hetsronites, et Hamul, dont descend celui des Hamulites. 22 Tels sont les clans de Juda. On dénombra 76'500 hommes. 23 Voici les descendants d'Issacar en fonction de leur clan: de Thola descend le clan des Tholaïtes, de Puva celui des Puvites, 24 de Jashub celui des Jashubites, de Shimron celui des Shimronites. 25 Tels sont les clans d'Issacar. On dénombra 64'300 hommes. 26 Voici les descendants de Zabulon en fonction de leur clan: de Séred descend le clan des Sardites, d'Elon celui des Elonites, de Jahleel celui des Jahleélites. 27 Tels sont les clans des Zabulonites. On dénombra 60'500 hommes. 28 Les fils de Joseph, en fonction de leur clan, furent Manassé et Ephraïm. 29 Voici les descendants de Manassé: de Makir descend le clan des Makirites. Makir eut pour fils Galaad. De Galaad descend le clan des Galaadites. 30 Voici les fils de Galaad: Jézer, dont descend le clan des Jézerites, Hélek celui des Hélekites, 31 Asriel celui des Asriélites, Sichem celui des Sichémites, 32 Shemida celui des Shemidaïtes, Hépher celui des Héphérites. 33 Tselophchad, un descendant de Hépher, n'eut pas de fils, mais il eut des filles. Voici leur nom: Machla, Noa, Hogla, Milca et Thirtsa.

34 Tels sont les clans de Manassé. On dénombra 52'700 hommes.

that the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying: 2 'Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel.' 3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying: 4 '[Take the sum of the people,] from twenty years old and upward, as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel, that came forth out of the land of Egypt.' 5 Reuben, the first-born of Israel: the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites; 6 of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites. 7 These are the families of the Reubenites; and they that were numbered of them were forty and three thousand and seven hundred and thirty. 8 And the sons of Pallu: Eliab. 9 And the sons of Eliab: Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. 52 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 53 'Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names. 54 To the more thou shalt give the more inheritance, and to the fewer thou shalt give the less inheritance; to each one according to those that were numbered of it shall its inheritance be given. 55 Notwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot; according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. 56 According to the lot shall their inheritance be divided between the more and the fewer.' {S} 57 And these are they that were numbered of the Levites after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites. 58 These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korahites. And Kohath begot Amram. 59 And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister. 60 And unto Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 61 And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the LORD. 62 And they that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, every male from a month old and upward; for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel. 63 These are they that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 64 But among these there was not a man of them that were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the LORD had said of them: 'They shall surely die in the wilderness.' And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. {S}
