Field Course Update #9…? Anthracite Day!
We had two major stops today that were both at anthracite coal mines. The first one was my favorite!
I do not have as much to say as I would like to about either location so I might do another post tomorrow because my field notebook is currently missing. Really hope it is not gone though.
Anyways… the first place is an abandoned anthracite coal mine and they are working on kind of restoring the environment best they can. This is in Centralia, and still has active burning underground from this coal mine. The first picture was a nice view from close to where the mine was underground and it was really foggy out and I just thought it looked neat. The second picture you can actually see one of the thermal vents from the active burning of the coal mine. The third picture we were using a device (not sure right now, wrote it down though…) to take the temperature of the vent which was around 118F. The fourth picture was the drainage from the mine and was kinda sad to see but really interesting. There was a lot of iron you can see that settled down to the debris at the bottom of the drainage area and the water is highly acidic. Some people were getting way too close I was like… have you ever heard anything about safety at all? But that is besides the point. There were literally frogs somehow living in here and lots of vegetation and thriving life just right next to the surrounding area.
The second location was at a much larger active anthracite coal mine. The fifth picture is some pyrite our prof found and was super neat the way it formed. The sixth, seventh, and eighth photos are all from areas within the mine. Honestly I am not sure into this stuff because it kind of conflicts with some of my morals with the environment and nature but it was still interesting to be there and see how some of the operations worked. We got rained out here so I am sure there was a lot more to learn that unfortunately we did not. It was literally pissing the rain we were soaked and I was damp for the two hour drive back I hated it. The last photo though is a little pit stop we made of one drainage area of this mine that actually is a mini geyser because of the pressure (I believe).
Today was really refreshing to get a break from mapping and just have some good time enjoying the mostly decent weather throughout the day. When we got back the dinner kind of sucked but it is okay because we had class about diversity in the geosciences which I think is pretty interesting. After, me and my roommate (and their lovely cat) hung out and talked for a little bit.

Aflame // Margaret Atwood
The world’s burning up. It always did.
Lightning would strike, the resin
in the conifers explode, the black peat smoulder,
greying bones glow slowly, and the fallen leaves
turn brown and writhe, like paper
held to candle. It’s the scent of autumn,
oxidation: you can smell it on your skin,
that sunburn perfume.
Only now
it’s burning faster. All those yarns
of charred apocalypse concocted
back when we played with matches—
the ardent histories, the Troyish towers
viewed through toppling smoke, the fine
mirage volcanoes that we mimed
with such delight when setting
marshmallows on fire on purpose,
all those slow-fused epics
packed in anthracite, then buried
under granite mountains, or else thrown
into the deepest sea like djinns
in stoneware bottles—
All, all are coming true
because we opened the lead seals,
ignored the warning runes,
and let the stories out.
We had to know.
We had to know
how such tales really end:
and why.
They end in flames
because that’s what we want:
we want them to.

The level in which this show depicts the 'adults' not listening to the 'kids' and a husband considering his wife as crazy is grating on my nerves so bad, it's great.
