Oh, you know, just the usual internet browsing experience in the year of 2024

Some links and explanations since I figured it might be useful to some people, and writing down stuff is nice.
First of all, get Firefox. Yes, it has apps for Android/iOS too. It allows more extensions and customization (except the iOS version), it tracks less, the company has a less shitty attitude about things. Currently all the other alternatives are variations of Chromium, which means no matter how degoogled they supposedly are, Google has almost a monopoly on web browsing and that's not great. Basically they can introduce extremely user unfriendly updates and there's nothing forcing them to not do it, and nowhere for people to escape to. Current examples of their suggested updates are disabling/severly limiting adblocks in June 2024, and this great suggestion to force sites to verify "web environment integrity" ("oh you don't run a version of chromium we approve, such as the one that runs working adblocks? no web for you.").
uBlockOrigin - barely needs any explanation but yes, it works. You can whitelist whatever you want to support through displaying ads. You can also easily "adblock" site elements that annoy you. "Please log in" notice that won't go away? Important news tm sidebar that gives you sensory overload? Bye.
Dark Reader - a site you use has no dark mode? Now it has. Fairly customizable, also has some basic options for visually impaired people.
SponsorBlock for YouTube - highlights/skips (you choose) sponsored bits in the videos based on user submissions, and a few other things people often skip ("pls like and subscribe!"). A bit more controversial than normal adblock since the creators get some decent money from this, but also a lot of the big sponsors are kinda scummy and offer inferior product for superior price (or try to sell you a star jpg land ownership in Scotland to become a lord), so hearing an ad for that for the 20th time is kinda annoying. But also some creators make their sponsored segments hilarious.
Privacy Badger (and Ghostery I suppose) - I'm not actually sure how needed these are with uBlock and Firefox set to block any tracking it can, but that's basically what it does. Find someone more educated on this topic than me for more info.
Https Everywhere - I... can't actually find the extension anymore, also Firefox has this as an option in its settings now, so this is probably obsolete, whoops.
Facebook Container - also comes with Firefox by default I think. Keeps FB from snooping around outside of FB. It does that a lot, even if you don't have an account.
WebP / Avif image converter - have you ever saved an image and then discovered you can't view it, because it's WebP/Avif? You can now save it as a jpg.
YouTube Search Fixer - have you noticed that youtube search has been even worse than usual lately, with inserting all those unrelated videos into your search results? This fixes that. Also has an option to force shorts to play in the normal video window.
Consent-O-Matic - automatically rejects cookies/gdpr consent forms. While automated, you might still get a second or two of flashing popups being yeeted.
XKit Rewritten - current most up to date "variation "fork" of XKit I think? Has settings in extension settings instead of an extra tumblr button. As long as you get over the new dash layout current tumblr is kinda fine tbh, so this isn't as important as in the past, but still nice. I mostly use it to hide some visual bloat and mark posts on the dash I've already seen.
YouTube NonStop - do you want to punch youtube every time it pauses a video to check if you're still there? This saves your fists.
uBlacklist - blacklists sites from your search results. Obviously has a lot of different uses, but I use it to hide ai generated stuff from image search results. Here's a site list for that.
Redirect AMP to HTML - redirects links from their amp version to the normal version. Amp link is a version of a site made faster and more accessible for phones by Bing/Google. Good in theory, but lets search engines prefer some pages to others (that don't have an amp version), and afaik takes traffic from the original page too. Here's some more reading about why it's an issue, I don't think I can make a good tl;dr on this.
Also since I used this in the tags, here's some reading about enshittification and why the current mainstream internet/services kinda suck.

As the person I follow who does reverse engineering, do you have any suggestions for finding resources on reverse engineering Android apps?
Specifically, there's an app I'm playing with, where after seeing the structure of the "export as Markdown" output I want to know what the internal structure and representation of the data is. The end goal of understanding it is to be able to add certain kinds of data dynamically, rather than up front. That's certainly doable typing in raw markdown, but being able to do it "app style" would be more convenient.
The google Play Store entry does not mention any open source licenses, or looking for the source code and hopefully a git repo or something would have been my first step.
(I'll probably need to bang together a crappy app to do what I really want regardless, but maybe this app's data structure would be more convenient than doing so with markdown.)
So, android stuff:
First you need the APK. You can do some trickery with your phone to pull it over the ADB connection if you install the android SDK, but generally I just google "app name APK" and you'll find some greymarket site that'll give you a copy.
Secondly, APKs are just ZIP files (JAR files, technically, but JAR files are also just ZIP files!). Unzip them and you can find lots of interesting stuff, often.

For disassembling/decompiling them, my go-to program is jadx. It's a java decompiler that's been around a while and can natively open APK files and decompile them. There's some weirder new APKs that it can't handle (something to do with a newer bytecode revision, I think?) but I can't recall the details on how you handle those. Those are rare, in my experience. jadx is pretty good, but you'll occasionally find methods or entire classes that it just can't figure out, and it'll give you a bytecode dump. I don't yet have a good solution for those, other than "get good at reading JVM bytecode".
If you're dealing with games, another useful thing can be UABE and dotPeek. These are unity/C# tools, but you would be surprised how many android games (and non-games!) are actually unity under the hood.
Bluestacks can also be useful, because it'll let you run the app on your desktop and that can be handy for things like running WireShark to log all network traffic.
Speaking of logging, the other handy thing I've done is enabling android developer mode on my phone to get to one specific option: Bluetooth HCI snoop log.
Now, actually getting that log is tricky and varies from phone to phone, because for some reason manufacturers like to move it around, but it's one of the best ways to reverse engineer bluetooth communication stuff. You basically turn on the log and everything your phone does to communicate with your Smart Toothbrush or whatever will be logged to a file, then you can yank that file over and stuff it into Wireshark.
So... hopefully some of that is a helpful start? I've not done a huge amount of Android reversing so I'm not super familiar with the tools used, but these are the ones I've got on hand for when I do.

The ones who weren’t kidnapped but instead, willingly given away are Cosette and Ismael
Asshole parents, man
One day, Cosette finds a video in their file. Its clicks play on the video, and it shows two people talking. The one in charge of the project, and its mother.
As the video plays, Cosette notices that the woman in the video looks very familiar but she brushes it off until near the end when they see a little girl. Her.
The video ends with their mother saying “Make sure my daughter never knows. She is nothing but a mistake.” And walks away as the video ends. Cosette is not only terrified by what they just saw but are sad and mad that their own family doesn’t even care about giving them up for a project
Cosette’s mom served in the military, and gave Cosette to the government at a very young age to the point where they didn’t even have to erase her memories because Cosette never got to know their family that well
Ismael’s mom was very neglectful of him the moment he was born
She left him alone, forgot to feed him, and ignored him when he cried
When some government agents arrived, she just handed him over, telling them, “Go nuts,” and they were just, “… Damn, lady. At least put up a fight.”
The agents just let him transition, didn’t even even try to deadname him. He’s a kid who can teleport, of course they’re not going to upset him
Austin T is android in this au (As seen in the incorrect quotes)
When he was very young, Austin was diagnosed with a deadly disease that had no cure
His parents didn’t want him to die and since they have ties to the government, they ask them if they can transfer their son’s brain into a new body
They say yes, but on condition… They want him to be part of a project they are working one, one that can make an android sense like a human and blend into the crowd.
Desperate, the parents agree to the project
Austin T doesn’t know he himself is an android but the other Austins know this fact and exploit for their own benefit. Who knew a sleepover would be an opportunity for your guests to snoop around?
They knew this ever since they were little and using Austin T ever since
They even found a remote control in his parents room that allows them to control him without his knowledge and consent, basically using him for their entertainment and purpose
Marc is the only bionic kid with a Commando App, and it terrifies him. Whenever the Commando App disengages, he wakes up confused with no memory of what he’s done
When activated, Mike’s as strong as Denise, and that, combined with Mike’s rage-induced rampages were never good
To get him under control, the scientists would often tase him should he ever go on another one of his riots
He tore open a tank made of pure tungsten. It took two horse darts to take him out when the tasers didn’t work because he built up a tolerance… How fucked up is that
Strangely, Mike has some vague memories of his parents, but not enough that the scientists have to worry about
Jean X Austin (Post Lab Days)
Jean originally HATED Austin T because he and his friends terrorized everyone at school. Although, Austin T really didn’t do any bullying
But soon, Austin T found the nerve to stand up to them after they went too far with their bullying, and started making friends with the other students… Especially Jean
So, they started dating! Yay!
Now here’s why Austin T left the other Austins in the first place. The remote they use to control him glitched so he was no longer under their control, but, then Armbruster had some guys fix it (No questions asked), so now they mess with Austin while he’s dating Jean
The people who fixed the remote botched it and gave the other Austins access to Tomassian’s own version of the Commando App which allows him access to all of his abilities- Laser vision, super strength, force fields and invulnerability
Fortunately, but also unfortunately, Austin’s face came off when Denise punched him, so all anyone saw was a kid with a “robot mask” going on a rampage through Paris
Mendeleiev managed to deactivate Austin’s Commando App, but they still don’t know how it was activated in the first place. Fortunately, it’ll never happen again, she fixed Austin’s face, and now he’s a student in their class
Marc x Nathaniel
Marc’s worst fear is that he and Nathaniel get into a fight and he uses his powers to make him forget anything happened
But that's nothing compared to his Commando App activating when he's around Nathaniel
The moment he senses danger, Mike will show up and won't stop until he's deactivated manually or he doesn't sense any "danger"
The moment he sees Nathaniel with a cut or bruise, Marc immediately suspects the worst and avoids Nathaniel for a while until he's sure Mike didn't hurt him
(Light fluff) Just to make Nathaniel laugh, he'll control one of the Austins and have them do this

Cosette was a little insecure about how she looked when Zoé started dating her and would sometimes shapeshift parts of her to look how she thinks Zoé would like her until Zoé realized what she was doing
Zoé is always worried she's too boring because her friends are fucking bionic superhumans
Cosette always manages to convince her she’s anything but
When they’re bored or just really wanna mess with Audrey, Cosette will shapeshift into her and do a bunch of stuff Audrey would never do in front of cameras

Google is working on something called the "Privacy Sandbox" for Android, and it has a special part called the "SDK Runtime." But what does all this jargon really mean for regular folks like us?
Imagine your smartphone is like a little city, and inside this city, there are many different buildings. These buildings are like the apps you use, such as Facebook, Instagram, or games. Now, these apps sometimes need to talk to each other or share information. They do this using something called an "SDK," which is like a messenger that helps them communicate.
Here's the problem: sometimes these messengers (SDKs) have too much power and can access your personal information without permission. It's like someone snooping around your house without your knowledge. Not cool, right?
So, Google came up with a solution called the "SDK Runtime." It's like putting these messengers in a special box with a lock on it. This box keeps them separate from your personal stuff and makes sure they only access what they're supposed to.

Beeper -- A Universal Chat App, Built On Matrix, That Is Darn Good.

I am very much enjoying my experience using Beeper, a Matrix-based chat application to tie all your chats together. Particularly the way that they have managed to actually bridge iMessage so that I can respond to it natively from my Android or Linux machine. Beeper is a universal chat app. It's a single app to chat with friends on 15 different chat networks. We've added chat superpowers that make it the best chat app on earth. -- Beeper It does exactly what it says it's going to do on the tin -- allows me to have a unified app to message across most major chat applications. The setup is pretty user-friendly, though I will mention that it will load all your past messages from some services (Facebook Messenger in particular) on initial setup, so just be ready for that. It's a one-time inconvenience, and I think the opposite behavior -- not pulling in old messages -- would be an even bigger problem. The service is free which, let's face it, cannot continue forever. However, the quality of the service and the responsiveness of the team is such that I would be perfectly happy paying a subscription for the service. On their jobs page it says "We charge our users a $10/monthly paid subscription service. Our pricing model allows Beeper to deliver a great product and service, while eliminating any need to profit by monetizing user data." I think that when they switch to that model, the service is actually worth it. Secondly, it is piping all of your communications through a central point. While 2FA must be enabled for all bridges that support it (including iMessage) and as much encryption is employed as possible, there is a possibility of a man-in-the-middle attack or snooping where the bridges interface between services. For the vast majority of my messaging, this is not a problem; YMMV. You can, if you like, self-host your own Matrix server and connect to rooms, host bots, and the like from there as well. Beeper open-sourced all of their bridges, so if you'd like to set it all up on your own, you can definitely give it a go yourself. But the improvements Beeper has made to the experience are rather nice. Files upload and show up properly on the far end of the bridge, not as links to the homeserver. Suddenly I am able to get decent-resolution videos from my Apple-brainwashed (er... using) friends and significant others ... on my phone and on my desktop and show up as "blue bubbles" for those who care about that sort of thing. The UI of both their desktop and Android client are slightly different from stock Element (an interface for "regular" Matrix), but in ways that I think are going to make it more appealing to "regular" users. And perhaps most importantly, I do not have to handle all the fiddly bits myself. Their team has been rolling out updates on a regular basis with new features and making the whole experience smoother. A few technical notes for those of you who may be edge cases like me. For those of you using bauh to manage your AppImages, beeper's built-in updater breaks the symlink. (Their tech support says this isn't a problem if you use AppImageLauncher, and I agree, having switched to that solution for other reasons.) If you'd like to stick with bauh's management of AppImages, I wrote a quick little bash script that simply checks the symlink and recreates it if a new AppImage is found where bauh installs them; it's at https://gist.github.com/uriel1998/da34848e2cbd3d3d1169d9a2a77d4127 For those of you who are intrigued by that iMessage option but are not Apple users, you will find out something pretty quickly: Native iMessage support also means HEIC formatted images. To enable support for this format in Xviewer, Eye of Gnome, GPicView, PCMan File Manager, Nemo, and a bunch more, sudo apt install heif-gdk-pixbuf will enable support (for those on Debian or Debian-derived systems like Ubuntu and MXLinux). It uses both heif-convert and gifview to handle the formats that feh doesn't natively. Pinduoduo discovered to use malware to access users privacy data
Pinduoduo — According to cybersecurity experts, Pinduoduo, one of China’s most popular shopping apps, may snoop on users.

Pinduoduo takes violations of privacy and data security to a new level.
Several programs collect massive amounts of user data without authorisation, but Pinduoduo takes it to a new level.
The crisis at the e-commerce behemoth was found by cybersecurity teams from Asia, Europe, and the United States, as well as former and current Pinduoduo employees.
Several researchers detected malware on the app that can attack vulnerabilities in Android operating systems.
Insiders said the vulnerabilities were used to promote sales by targeting customers and competitors.
According to Mikko Hyppönen, chief research officer of Finland’s WithSecure:
“We haven’t seen a mainstream app like this trying to escalate their privileges to gain access to things that they’re not supposed to gain access to.”

-Emerald would have the longest passcode on the face of the planet 😭 she says it’s because she doesn’t want people snooping in her business but in actuality she wanted to be able to use her entire families birthdays in it 🥺4 peoples bdays is kinda tedious to put in all time so luckily she has a Face ID. I hc her as v tech savvy so she has the aesthetic widgets, they’re color coded and themed. Her phone case is clear with polaroids of her favorite people in the back. Intensely keeps Snapchat streaks (even though I really don’t know what those are, the cool kids in high school used to do it) but only posts consistently on Instagram. Half of their high school follows her. Posts lots of selfies and she loves a good photo dump. If her and he family go on vacation, best believe that at least four 15 slide photo dumps will come from that. She definitely knows that her parents stalk her on Instagram so she posts the more wild party pics on her snap. Texts the family group chat every night to say that she loves them even when she’s sleeping in a room a few feet away from them 🥺
-Kendall changed all her socials to private immediately after one of her students asked her about her weekend that she had posted on insta 😬 Has a bulky ass phone case and a screen protector. Insists on having her kids locations services being on at all times. She does the mom thing where she cross posts things from her Facebook onto Instagram. And the pictures are the worst pics of her kids that they’ve ever seen and they’re cropped weird so a part of their body is cut off from the picture every time 😭 Likes all of her kids Instagram posts and comments mom shit like “look at you and your friends 😁 so cute!”
-Synthia has Em do the widget thing for on her phone so she has a cutesy pastel theme 🥰 Her ringtone switches between wind chimes and soft nature sounds. Before she has kids she posts lots of cute selfies and the most adorable photos of her partners (think Synthias actual insta) Her kids are the cutest little babies in the world, trust and believe that she habitually posts throwback pictures of them as they get older
-Gia refuses to let go of their android from 8 years ago, even though both Kendall and Synth has iPhones 😭 it’s on its last leg by the time the kids get old enough for their own phones so to make it easier on the family phone plan, they get a an iphone. But only like an iPhone 5s 🥲 that shit is cracked and it gets hot when they run certain apps for two long. Mostly posts pictures of their art interspersed with pics of their family 🥺 takes forever to answer texts unless it’s their family and will send everyone else to voicemail. Literally checks their phone to see if it’s from their babies, if it is they’ll answer in .02 seconds, if it isn’t they’ll dismiss the text and it’s iffy on whether or not they’ll go back to answer it later😭 Ringer is always off, one of those people who hates the sound. Puts that shit on vibrate and turns it up so it will literally shake a table.
-Jasper’s phone background is him and his mama from her birthday dinner 🥺 rarely posts on any socials. When he does, he’s more of a insta and twitter person. Retweets those corny positivity accounts. He’s such a sweetheart but he’s also really lame, so he’ll randomly post one if his parents with a caption of “love you ❤️.” Three separate posts every parents day and birthday for Ken, Gi, and Synth. Lovingly clowns Emerald on insta for her birthday with the worst photos of her he could find but the most heartfelt caption 🥺 when her location sharing is on he will track his mommy while she’s running errands and text her asking if she swing back home so he can go with her. Just have to add that his new crush Ezra will post after soccer pics of just the two of them with lowkey flirty captions 🤭
