Author Spotlight: Jenna Jarvis
Although club members got to read it a little earlier, Jenna Jarvis's Ride With Me is now available for everyone! To celebrate the release, check out Jenna's essay on writing about road-trips and the outlaw below.
Tumblr media
Ride with Me is a queer romance about a pair of disaster bisexual sisters-in-law who take a long drive west across the United States together. One is trying to run from her marriage, the other trying to have her great American road-trip. It’s my first non-fantasy book, but in many ways it felt very familiar for me to write, since Digging for Heaven was also, in its way, about travelling with someone. I love nothing more than a good road-trip story. In fantasy, all my favourite sections of the Song of Ice and Fire and The Lord of the Rings or more recently N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth series were the ones trapping two or more unlikely characters together for the duration of a journey. I loved reading about how they deal with the mundanity of putting up with another person for an extended length of time. Comedies like A Goofy Movie, Little Miss Sunshine and Are We There Yet? delighted me as a kid and gave me a love for stories about people only talking about their problems after reaching boiling point. It can be easier to talk seriously when in motion, and these films hinge on that. The famous Ladybird scene of our titular character throwing herself from her mom’s car to avoid further conversation with her is often on my mind when writing car dialogue.
There’s a lot of things that have mythologised the United States for me. It's inescapable, omnipresent as a cultural hegemony with a history and mythos invented in full performative view of the world. Their road-trip stories are inextricable from the aesthetics of the western, and the long and loaded history of going west to reinvent yourself: enmeshed with the colonial legacy of manifest destiny. To celebrate the legacy of the solo gunslinger canonised by the movies is to ignore the black and brown bodily reality of the cowboy, and the question of who becomes memorialised or pitied when living beyond the grip of “society”. With his camp imagery and post Brokeback cinema impression the cowboy has become a popular queer hero. But as with most things in American history whiteness is still critical to that image, and that extends to the movies playing with the image of the outlaw going west.
Thelma and Louise’s Thelma spend much of the end of the film in a t-shirt emblazoned with the confederate flag. The Devil’s Rejects has Otis quote white supremacist Charles Manson. In To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, a dream of a queer comedy about three drag queens in an impractical car, race is an absolutely cutting and often jarring wedge between the characters and to a lesser but key extent between the film and a modern audience. The Blues Brothers both uplifts and pushes from the centre its black characters, the plot pointless and voiceless without them and yet never very interested in them. Supernatural ran for fifteen seasons from the Bush administration, its characters driving around their country unchecked executing those more outside of society than themselves. Throughout the series they are regularly assumed to be white supremacists. None of this theming, to me, reads as incidental, even if it wasn’t intentional on the part of the various creators.
But road-trips always feel hopeful too, at least while they’re still moving. They’re romantic, in a sense of riding off into the sunset with a Just Married sign (Just Married being another hugely influential movie to me, I’m sorry to say) – but also to leave alone, as to an extent both of my characters feel they’re doing at the beginning. The act of driving at all is empowering: the act is proof you’re of age, and deemed trustworthy by society, and bold enough to control a dangerous vehicle (can you tell I can’t drive). It’s the fantasy of getting away from it all, of maybe never returning to where you came from. It’s the opening/ending of Showgirls, it’s the high midpoint of Barbie, it’s the hysterically cutting twist of Gone Girl, it’s a cross-genre favourite focus for an endless number of songs.
I’m probably going to keep writing road trip stories forever, because they’re some of my favourite ways to make characters interact with each other. But as with any genre or structure I approach, it helps to keep in mind what’s come before, in both an inspirational and damning sense. So many of the images that sing to me that I wanted to write about here are also coming from a symbology of American capitalism and individualism – the highway and car, or in this case, van - over lands forcibly emptied of their indigenous people. That haunts most stories tackling them, and remembering those ghosts felt critical even when writing a light-hearted rom-com.
For more on the complicated queer history on the cowboy check out Kaz Rowe’s video on it which I was trying really hard not to completely plagiarise here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0AOwdODmMA

Notes:
Here are some horror movies people will say are good but in fact they are garbage so save yourself: The Haunting (1963), The Babadook, Goodnight Mommy, anything classified as New French Extremism, any of the Paranormal Activity films, Cannibal Holocaust, A Serbian Film, Where the Dead Go to Die, Terrifier, Hostel and its sequels
Grave Encounters 2 may be the worst sequel I have ever sat through, with Sinister 2 a close second.  I’ve never seen any of the Saw sequels.
You can also watch the 70s Suspiria for its gorgeous visuals and score but don’t expect coherence or plot or character development
If you’re wondering why I didn’t include such and such film here, if it’s not on the recommended list or the do not watch list the odds are good I haven’t seen it

Tales from the Hood Commentary - Unapologetically Black Storytelling
Let’s talk about Tales from the Hood. This film, or really, film anthology, is Blackity, Black, Black. We see a majority Black cast star in stories written and directed by Black filmmakers in an effort to address some of the many issues facing African Americans in the nineties. The theme of the movie is retribution, and the film does not toy with ambiguity. It unapologetically tackles Black-on-Black gang violence, domestic abuse, police brutality, political racism, Black complacency in supporting racist institutions, and more. While these messages are blatant in the film’s storytelling, I wonder if the artistic liberties were conducive in communicating these main ideas to the audience.
Tumblr media
The movie itself is a parody of Tales from the Crypt, which is a horror anthology television series. Being a parody, there’s a lot more flexibility in comedy and satire on top of the already exaggerated aspects of horror movies. The first couple stories in the anthology, I could follow along easily, but as the movie progressed, I found myself getting a bit lost in its theatrics. There was also some especially graphic imagery of lynching and violence during the ending of the movie that was seemingly placed more for shock value than to incite fear in the viewer. In my watch of the film, seeing this made my eyes glaze over and I stopped caring about the message. As a Black woman, I felt I didn’t need to see more racial violence towards Black people and the horror was no longer fictitious or supernatural. In my brief discussion with a few of my peers, they noted that they also felt similarly.
As a film that was made by Black people, for Black people, it portrayed Black characters in ways that were not often seen in the horror genre, or in film in general. One depiction that stood out to me especially, was the perspective of a Black cop that was complicit in police violence against a Black man. Rarely do we get insight into this point of view. The showcase of guilt and fatigue at failing to change the system from the inside is still especially relevant almost thirty years later.  In this example and other ways, the movie eliminates or elaborates upon one-dimensional tropes for Black characters in horror media, like the sacrifice, the mystic, the nanny, the Black-coded monster, and more. If a trope is present in the film, it was generally embellished in a number of ways to add more depth and value for that character in the plot.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, a common thread that was mentioned by UCLA Prof. Tananarive Due in her analysis of the film, was the use of art to express moments of reckoning. Paintings, drawings, custom dolls, and other forms of art are employed to illustrate both vengeance and justice in powerful ways. I’m not sure if this was intended by the film’s creators, but I think it was a unique way to tie the films messages to Black artistry and culture. The Black community is especially proficient in providing aesthetics and media that become very popular, and the film’s use of art may have been a connection to this. What can I say? We’ve just got style.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, I enjoyed watching the movie because it was an incredibly distinctive experience. I also think it did a great job of eliciting audience reactions because what most people remember is how a movie made them feel. Personally, I laughed, was disgusted, was on the edge of my seat, and more. It was a very entertaining movie and I think it accomplished the goals its production team had established concerning Black representation in media. While many parts of the film were a bit over the top, I don’t think it detracted from the story’s messaging. At some parts, I think the point was to be over the top.

2024 Sundance Film Festival – Here I Come!!
Tumblr media
Hi there! My name is Ryan, and I am a freshman in the graduating class of 2027 at Eckerd College, currently undeclared, and I love photography, films, music, and going to concerts. Hence, the photo above that I took at a concert I attended.
I am taking a Winter Term class along with other film enthusiasts and we are learning all about Indie films (short for Independent films) which are films not produced under the major Hollywood studio labels. The class ends with a trip to Park City, Utah to attend the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and I can’t wait!
In preparation for this event, we have been reviewing all the films that will be shown at the Sundance Film Festival. On examining my choices, I realize that from a theme perspective, I overwhelmingly prefer the science fiction genre. Of the twelve films I chose, five of them are science fiction. The remainder relate to some of my personal interests of music, comedy, mysteries, and drama.
Feature Films (5):
Freaky Tales, a bizarre fiction film that includes action, adventure, comedy, and drama all wrapped up in one. It is composed of four stories that somehow get tied together. The stories described appear to be totally different except for the fact they all are located in Oakland. I am interested in how they get tied together. Whether it be sequential or if everything gets put together at the very end.
The American Society of Magical Negroes is a satirical comedy. It looks to be a cross of Harry Potter and race relations but with a comedic twist. This is Kobi Libii’s feature film directorial debut. I am really looking forward to it as he writes and performs on Comedy Central.
The Babadook looks to be a standard sci-fi horror film where the monster comes to life. When these are done well they never disappoint.
I Saw the TV Glow appears to be a combination of horror, drama, and the supernatural. However, any time a film contains the supernatural as this does, it also falls into the science fiction genre even if it is not called out. So this hits three areas of interest for me as in addition to sci-fi, I enjoy dramas and horror films.
As I like crime dramas, the Black Box Diaries appeals to me as it seems to be a cross between Law and Order SVU, one of my favorite dramas, and a dark autobiography as the writer investigates her own sexual assault.
Shorts (5):
The Looming is a horror film and looks to be pretty scary. Sundance’s description states that Chester has dementia but when the virtual assistant, Luna, detects a noise, it becomes questionable. The pictures are scary and quite disturbing. I hope that I can stomach it.
Dream Creep is another scary story where a couple wakes up in the middle of the night due to sounds coming from an unlikely orifice or hole in the house. I hope it is well done because a good scare is always worthwhile.
Object 817 is another sci-fi film. It sounds like a typical government cover up of the existence of aliens. These are the things I want to know. How long has the cover up been going on? Who in the government knows about it? How have they kept it a secret? And where in the world is Ural?
The Masterpiece appears to be a mystery where the tables get turned and the sellers become the buyers. I always love a good mystery that keeps me on the edge of my seat. I think this is going to be one of them.
The Lost Season is a sci-fi film but otherwise it is somewhat of a departure from the other films in that it is animated. It seems very mysterious as the Sundance Film Festival description is sparse, only saying, “Winter is over. Continue watching.” The corresponding picture is of footprints in the snow. I always love a mystery so this is right up my alley.
Indie Episodic/New Frontier (2):
With my great interest in music, ENO is perfect for me. This film is a biographical documentary about Brian Eno. He is a British producer, composer, keyboardist, and singer and created the genre of ambient music. He is known for producing a diverse group of artists. These include David Bowie, U2, and Talking Heads to name a few. He has released over 40 solo and collaboration albums. I am very excited to see this film and learn more about him and his various creative processes. It states on the Sundance website that the film will include original interviews as well as much never-before-seen footage and unreleased music. I think it is going to be a very interesting film.
Tumblr media
Being (The Digital Griot) appears to be a very timely subject. With the advancements in artificial intelligence coming to the forefront of society, I wonder if this sci-fi film is going to have an ominous tone in addressing computers as in Stanley Kubrick's film, A Space Odyssey.
Two other films I found interesting and hope to make time to see are Will and Harper and Little Death. Hopefully, Will Ferrrell will put a humorous spin on a serious subject in Will and Harper.
Tumblr media
While I’m not sure where Little Death will take us, I have always liked David Schwimmer and he has been able to transition from Friends to more serious roles.
It looks like the festival has a lot to offer this year and I am so excited to attend my first Sundance Film Festival. It should be a great time!
