My friend is getting some crap on instagram about perceived classism in the lolita community, and as someone who runs a budget-focused lolita fashion blog, I'm going to rehash some of the old "but I can't afford burando!" conversation.
For some background reading, here's where I bought three "lolita" "dresses" off ebay, and what I actually received for my money. And here's a breakdown of one of those specifically. I'm linking to these because I want everyone to remember that the pictures on ebay, amazon, wish, etc do not represent what the actual piece you receive will look like.
Lolita fashion can be expensive, but the less expensive end of legitimate lolita fashion is not actually as expensive as many people think it is. It's not all $300 for a dress and $60 for a pair of socks. There are options that bring the price down to other fashions. It cannot compete with the hyper-fast fashion of Shein and H&M and other places where the clothing is designed to be disposable. This is because lolita clothing is not disposable. Even modified or damaged, lolita fashion pieces have resell value. It's very common for people to be wearing garments that are over ten years old. There's also a lot of documentation about how hyper-fast fashion is damaging to the environments where it's made and the people who made it.
Okay, so that's all very fine and well, but it's true that recognizing that something is worth the money doesn't actually get you the money to buy it. There's a lot of things that I recognize are worth the money it costs to buy them, but that I don't have the money for. I don't drive a high-end electric car, even though I think it would be a better choice for me, because I don't have the money for a high-end electric car. So I do, very distinctly, understand that. I'm not about to tell someone "just save up for it!"
But, when someone tells you that you cannot buy lolita fashion on wish dot com, they're not actually saying "you won't be accepted in a wish dot com dress." They're saying, "any money you spend on a wish dot com dress will be wasted, because you will not receive a usable garment." Let's play pretend for a second. You come up to me with $20 and say, "I'd like to buy clothes." I say, "Good. I'll sell you some clothes." I then take your $20 bill, rip it into small pieces, eat all of the pieces, and say, "that's your clothes."
Now, you didn't actually get any clothes from that, and there's no way you're getting your $20 back because I have consumed it. Your friend comes up to me and says, "Hi, I'd like to buy clothes." You say, "Don't give her that $20! It will be a waste of money!" Your friend says, "That's classism, because I only have $20." That's the conversation that's happening right now on my friend's instagram.
Classism does exist in the lolita fashion community. It can even come from people with good intentions. But, when it comes to buying on Ebay and Amazon and Walmart.com, people who are saying, "you can't buy lolita fashion on walmart dot com," aren't saying, "we won't accept your walmart dot com dress, because it was cheap." What they're saying is, "the thing that the site is telling you that you're buying and the thing that you will receive are going to be two different things. The thing you will receive will barely be a garment."
There's a reason why, when I say "lolita dress from ebay," I have to typeset it as "'lolita' 'dress' from ebay," because it will probably be neither lolita nor a dress.
If you're new to the fashion and want a good shopping resource, 42lolita is a reseller/shopping service that will tell you what the shipping will be up front. Many other resellers will send you the shipping costs after you make the purchase, which makes it harder to predict what you'll be paying. You won't be getting a dress for $20 on 42lolita or anywhere else, but the prices they charge are more in line with shopping at a department store, rather than shopping at a big name designer store. There's a lot of other ways to purchase lolita fashion, and I just used 42lolita as one example.
The number of people who genuinely want the fashion to be as expensive as possible is not all that big. Even people who occasionally buy a $300 dress enjoy finding inexpensive accessories and support pieces. Finding lolita-usable jewelry on the Walmart clearance rack is a thing that's exciting to most people in the fashion. If there was a secret to buying $20 dresses on ebay and getting something that could be used in the fashion, people in the fashion would absolutely already be doing that.
So anyway, yeah, there's classism in the lolita community, but telling someone that they should not give me $20 for clothes when experience shows that I'm just going to rip it up and eat is not classism. Friends don't let friends spend money on badly made replicas on aliexpress.

HELLO
i am having top surgery less than 3 weeks from today (January 22, 2024.) this is as sudden to me as it is to you!
Earlier this week I tried talking to my insurance company about what I am going to pay for surgery. you may recall that at the end of 2023 they refused to give me a dollar amount. Unfortunately they refused again to tell me the number. Truly BCBS is the gift that continues to take and take and take. So I have no idea if I have enough saved to cover the cost of surgery (could be right on the money! could be less than I anticipated! could be twice as much! world's most nerve-wracking gashapon machine.)
I also just had my pre-operative appointment this morning and confirmed with my surgeon what I need in recovery. here is my beautiful amazon wishlist for post-op. if you think i will need something that is not on this list reach out to me, I might have bought it offline or I might not know.
IF you don't want to buy me something from amazon but you still want to help me get through this financially, you can send me a ko-fi to help cushion whatever cost i may not have anticipated, as well as the several days I will be without pay* post-surgery BEFORE my built-up time off can be used.

my third and final request is for simple recipes. I need these because I'm not a very creative cook, and I need to meal prep the weekend of January 20 so that I don't starve and wither to nothing and blow away in the winds leaving nothing but dust. send me a resippy! tell me how to cook! tell me how to make something that's tasty or at least palatable. i don't like pork and struggle with beef but i'll gladly eat chicken and fish. and fruits and vegetables.
so basically that's it, but also thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support over the past few months especially. this site has its ups and downs and good and bad but i think basically there's a lot of good kind people in the world and some of them are you.

Over the past nearly-two years, I've noticed that I get some questions about John's work asked repeatedly. That doesn't bother me - half of his prominent work is somewhat lost media, Tumblr's search is super fucked, and I always want to help anyone falling down the JO rabbit hole - but I realized that one central pinned post would be helpful! I'll keep this up to date as much as possible.

The John Oliver Masterlist is an incredible resource - while it hasn't been updated since about 2017 and has some broken links (especially in the LWT sections), it has functional links to every JO clip from The Daily Show, all the main segments of LWT through 2017, radio shows, and lots of other material. This was made by @johnoliverphotos and @ilovejohnoliver, and I'm eternally grateful for it.

Have you perused the John Oliver Masterlist above? This is the best way to find direct links to JO clips from The Daily Show on the Comedy Central website, because this shit is still not streaming anywhere else. Use a VPN if you're outside the US to view.
There are a small handful of TDS episodes available for purchase on Amazon Prime if you're in the US. I have no idea if any of them feature JO in any meaningful way - I will update this section once I review that.
Otherwise, you're gonna have to sail the high seas to watch this. I'm sorry that this is the state of the US' most important comedy show of the 2000s. Maybe Paramount will drop it on us when Stewart comes back to host TDS, who knows.
Community:
In the US, this can be streamed on Netflix and Hulu. Individual episodes can be purchased on YouTube, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime.
Worldwide, Community is available on Netflix until April 1st.

In the US, the whole show is on Paramount Plus and can be purchased through Amazon and Apple.
The godawful Comedy Central website has limited episodes for viewing. You'll need a US cable subscription to watch more than the first episode of every season, because of course you do.

I know you probably answer this constantly but your ebook tag is mostly promos so I can't find it answered... can youexplain how the ebooks work? How many devices can you use a link for? And how do you get new links for books you've downloaded previously?
I'm not sure whether I know exactly what you mean by "how the ebooks work", but let me start simply and we'll see how we get on.
All our ebooks are sold DRM-free. This means that you can use them on as many of your devices as you please that support the format you've bought.
(We sell our ebooks in .epub formats that suit Apple/iBooks, Kobo, Nook, and a generic .epub format that suits almost all other ebook readers. We also sell the .mobi format that until recently has run on the Kindle and Kindle App, but Amazon is now phasing this out.. so we're advising Kindle users to buy the generic .epub format now. If their device still prefers the .mobi format, we'll happily supply that to them.)
To buy one of our ebooks, you just roll up to a given product page, pick a format of that ebook that suits your needs, and buy it. You can use a credit card (Stripe is our processor), Apple Pay, or PayPal. This video will walk you through the basic purchase process.

The store handles the purchase proper, and then sends your transaction to an internal app called FetchApp. This app in turn mails you download links for the ebook files. You then click on the download link in the email and pull the files down to your computer (usually), then sideload them to your reading device. (Info on how to do that is here.)
When you buy one of our ebooks, you own it. Once bought, we have no way to exert control over it (and ye gads, we don't want any). If you've got a Kindle version of one of our ebooks, and Amazon (in some kind of fit of pique) disappears one from your library, we'll replace it in that format or another one, free of charge. If you have to change formats due to machine misadventure, disk crash, misplacing your files, changing platforms or whatever, we'll replace them for you free. We have no space program to support and are delighted to do you this service... because seriously, shouldn't buying a book once be enough? :) ...To get your ebook download links refreshed, you email our support address quoting your original order number, and within a day or so we'll send you new links.

A little late-night service for the Cherry Magic family:
For everyone’s sake as we’re waiting on TENTERHOOKS for the Cherry Magic movie DVD/Blu-ray to be released (some dates say November 8th, others say November 9th -- I believe that confusion is accounting for time zone differences from Japan to other countries), here are the links to the various versions of the Blu-ray and DVD from Amazon Japan and CD Japan. I *think* the different versions have to do with the goodies included in the BR/DVD packages and maybe extra discs of extra features as well -- unfortunately, the translations were a little beyond me for these items!
I got what I think is a souped-up version of the Blu-ray with booklets exclusive to Amazon Japan, but the price ranges, well, range. (And the prices below do not include shipping, which can vary depending on where you live -- when I buy from Amazon Japan, I usually pay between something like $19 to $25 for items I’m buying, including cosmetics and magazines.) The conversions to USD (if you are in the US) should populate automatically when you’re making a purchase, but if not, generally speaking, these yen prices are far lower when you convert them to USD.
All to say, if/when you buy one of these, you’re supporting the writers, cast, and crew of the show and the manga. Support your writers! <3

BTS Tutorial: Buying vs. Streaming
Attention puppykitties!
On March 24th, Jimin's album FACE is up against titans, including Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey. His antis have stated they WILL be giving them boosts just so he will rank even lower.
In addition, we will never get radio play like those artists because BTS will not bow to payola rules and pay for play. BTS has only ARMY.
So the best way to counteract that deficit is to buy the album. For example, you can chart a song by streaming it 150 times or buy it once, and it's the same count toward Billboard.
Jimin's album has 6 songs and is under a half hour long, so you can stream 900 songs nonstop for a day and a half, or you can buy 1 album. Given there are charts that count for 24 hours and for a week, buying is often the most expedient way to guarantee a spot on the Hot 100 and BB200.
For US and Puerto Rico, digital and physical albums are given the same weight in the charts (except for in WeVerse--digital songs in that platform do not count for Billboard).
I'm gonna link to Amazon CDs that will count for charts because Amazon products can be tricky with sellers from all over the world. I think you'll easily be able to find the albums on WeVerse (the digitals won't count toward Billboard but the CDs will) and the digitals on iTunes (this will count as a pure digital sale).

Also at Target--it can be a little tricky because the cheaper version for $19.99 doesn't let you choose which version you end up getting. So here are both albums:
Now, let me say to my friends on here who are pinching pennies out of necessity: YOU ARE NO LESS OF AN ARMY IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY ALBUMS. Nor are you less of an ARMY if you have to prioritize the typically cheaper digital version (it still counts, it just makes the artists a little less money and you don't get stuff like photocards and all). I'd love it if you could reach out to funding accounts for help; they often will prioritize digital and that totally counts too, both for charts and awards in Korea.
Whatever you do, be really careful of bundle deals with a bunch of ancillary accessories as those often will NOT count for Billboard--be sure to check before buying.
And even if all you do is stream on free trial premium YouTube and Spotify accounts, you are still helping. So no shame. No censure.
The reason we have success as an ARMY is so we can each of us contribute to the best of our abilities, and cover for each other when we need to tap out. If you're not in the US or Puerto Rico, you can stream in a different time zone and give those ARMYs some much needed rest or a chance to work at their jobs.
We all have our part to play.
So cover for other ARMY however you're able!
Whatever you can do, do it and take it seriously!

hi, everyone! i wrote a book (the first in a trilogy) inspired by the foxhole court/all for the game series with a majority asian cast and lesbian and gay pov characters who plan to murder the captain of a rival team as revenge for the trauma he has wrought upon them. it also deals with themes of recovery, addiction, sobriety, and grief; with the central theme of the work being, is there a correct way to heal from trauma?
and the amazing cover artwork was done by @detrinity !
synopsis
In coming to Schaffer University and agreeing to play hockey for his uncle, Dante Hidalgo knew that he was a dead man in every waking sense.
In an attempt to stave off the trauma wrought upon him by the brother who, too, wants him dead, Dante has resorted to any means necessary, including vices intrinsic to his own self-destruction. Knowing he will be dead by the time he is out of his uncle’s immediate care, Dante sees no point in continuing to uphold a life that he has deemed holds little—if any—value.
But Dante’s one-sided agreement to see through a self-righteous suicide is flipped on its head when Robyn Zaragoza arrives on his front doorstep in the wake of Xavier’s signature trait of violence. Summary:

So my computer's charger was on the way out. Combination of the charger itself breaking and the port for it losing grip.
Okay, fine. It's got a USB-C. I can charge with that. Internet says my laptop model supports USB-C charging.
Bought a USB-C charger.
Plugged it in.
Didn't work. Off-brand, the on-brand one was $15 more expensive, the gamble didn't pay off.
Low on money, but have enough to order another (not USB-C) charger. So I figure "fine, I'll return it, get my $40something dollars back, that way it's still like I only bought one charger, even if it falls out."
Was told by Amazon that they'd charge it to my debit card. The one they literally have on file.
Returned the USB-C charger.
"Your refund is being processed! It will take between 3-5 business days."
"Refund issued! $43.09 issued on Jun 30, 2023"
Saturday. Sunday. Monday comes around, no money. That's fine, it's only been one business day, I usually get my rent money on the 6th.
Tuesday's a holiday.
Wednesday, Thursday. Okay, we've hit 3 business days. I'll get it soon, right?
Friday, nothing. It's now the 7th.
"Check the status of my refund."
Chatbot. Prompt list. I can deal with that. "I haven't gotten my refund yet."
"Please wait 3-5 business days for your refund after your return is processed." Only option is "Okay, thanks!" Option closes window.
I do not want to thank Amazon. I want an option for "this was not helpful, let me talk to a human." There are no humans on the Amazon website.

Hi! It's now Monday. It has been 11 days since I returned my item. I message my bank; "hey, is my return on hold? If so, can you tell me when it'll be released? Thanks."

There is apparently a very convoluted way to get your money back from Amazon. From what I understand, you transfer a gift card to Amazon Pay, then verify yourself through Amazon Pay, then transfer it from there to a bank.
The online articles say to do it through the app.
I download the app. I follow the instructions.
The dropdown option mentioned does not exist.
Back to square one. I do more research on desktop.
Problem 1. There is no button for transferring funds to Amazon Pay from Amazon. I have searched. The site is as bare-bones minimalist as it gets.
Problem 2. "Can I withdraw from my Amazon Pay?" "Yes! Click this link to learn more." The link leads to a FAQ page instead of an actual help article. The word "withdraw" is nowhere in the entire wall of text. I have to comb through it manually. There is no withdrawal help.
Problem 3. Verifying yourself enough to transfer to a bank account involves pictures of cards I do not have, tying a selfie to my account, and having a video chat with a live agent.
I would rather eat cement.
$43.09 gift card balance.
"Would you like a week-long free trial of Prime?"
Closes laptop. Forcefully.

Hello! Do you plan on putting the Distraction and Arcove’s Bright Side ebooks on Amazon at some point in the future? I am completely fine with buying them directly from your website, but I prefer to read on my Kindle and buying from Amazon links the book and my notes up to my Goodreads account automatically. Again, it is not an issue at all for me to buy them directly from your website and send the file from Bookfunnel to my Kindle, but I was wondering if I should go ahead and do that or wait to buy when/if the ebooks are put on Amazon. Thank you!
Thanks for your interest in my work! To answer your question: no, I have no plans to put digital versions of these books on retailers any time soon. Neither the ebooks, nor the audiobooks. With the audiobooks, it's about money. They cost thousands of dollars to produce, and Audible will pay me less than $2 per copy, keeping more than 80% of the listener's money. These books do not sell in high enough volumes for me to make back their costs of production on Audible.
With the ebooks for Distraction, Bright Side, Legacy, etc, it's not about money. Instead, I am concerned about complaints and reviews from drive-by trolls. Bots run Amazon these days. If Amazon's bots shut down my account, it can be difficult to get a real person to look at it, even though the books do not actually violate Amazon's TOS.
Also, I know from experience that I will get mean comments and emails from people who buy Distraction without reading the description. A lot of people expect talking animal books to be child-safe. "Distraction" was close to my heart. I guess I'm just not ready to put it where trolls will find it.
Maybe I will not care as much in 5 or 10 or 20 years, but it won't be soon.
The paper versions are a little different. They're expansive enough that trolls don't seem to buy them. People actually read the description before they buy a paper book. I have looked and looked for a suitable alternative to KDP Print (Amazon's POD), but so far, there just isn't one. Other print-on-demand services are more expensive, lower quality, and/or MUCH slower. But the paper books seem to be OK so far on the Zon.

QUESTIONS
I know that some of you have questions like:
What is a split class? A split class is where one teacher has two grades of students in their class. I will have my class of (so far) 29 students split between 4th graders and 5th graders.
How can you teach two grades together? It will be hard but my admin, coaches, and fellow teachers are helping me work out the best schedule for me and my students.
Why can't you get help from your school or district? Unfortunately, part of the reason that I am teaching a split is because there is not enough money. The school and district can't help me with everything I want or need for my classroom. If I don't reach out for help from other sources, I end up buying most of what I need from my own pocket.

Hello! I have been reading finder for quite a bit but never really got to know how to see if there is a new chapter coming soon or when. I saw in your previous posts that you mentioned how you can see like new cover and some images of the chapters coming soon. I was wondering if the writer has social media where there are updates of their work?
Hiya! I’ll tell you want i know, sorry if some of this is not relevant to your question but i just wanted to put out there what i know for others who may not know everything.
For starters- yes the author does has a social media account. She makes announcements on her twitter and post pictures of her cats among other things. Her username is @yamaneayano her twitter is obviously in japanese so you will have to relay on twitters tranlsations to get by. the publishing company also has it’s own twitter account and they post promotional stuff, and other annoucnement - username is @bboy_editor
Finder comes out bi-monthly. So every other month, published physically in a magazine called Be Boy Gold Magazine. It can also be bough digitally but the release on that is much slower, because they prefer you buy it in Print! So yes we have to wait two months for a single episode to come out 🥲
There will be times they announce that sensei is not in the upcoming volume because she is taking a break or something like that which happens every so often - which is why sometimes chapters come out rather sporadically - and you have to wait four months for update, or worse 6 months! She also will sometimes pause the main storyline and write an extra- so you do get a chapter but its not relevant to the main storyline and you have to wait another two months for her to return back to the main storyline. This information sometimes she shares on twitter. But also Be Boy’s gold magazine releases a schedule for upcoming releases, where they post which authors are set for the next edition. So basically sometimes we dont know if she’s taking a break until that schedule is released.
She usually takes breaks when she is working on releasing her own book volume. As she also publishes a collection chapters to make a volume, which then get translated into english like a year later…sublime is the publisher for her english volumes and you can buy them on amazon or directly on their website digitally versions and print versions are available.
Be Boy Magazine can also be purchased, through various Japanese proxy sites and delivered to your house. Though it takes like a week for it to be delivered after it’s release, and of course you pay a lot for shipping it to the US. Keep in mind, this magazine is not released in english.
Raws get posted in various places, instragram, facebook, weibo— Personally i get a lot of my information from two discords that I have been apart of for several years. if anyone is interested in joining you can DM me and i’ll send you an invite! They post raws and spoilers, and obviously we discuss finder related news, one of these servers makes their own fan made translation of the raws and allows members to read the newest upto date chapters.
There is a creator on weibo who gets the magazine on the day of release, and post pictures of raws and gives a summary of the new chapter. If your interested in seeing those u can DM me and ill send you the link to her page - all i ask is that you dont post her raws on tumblr or any other site.
I’ll make it clear that I DO NOT post other creators raws nor fan made translations on tumblr. I just don’t feel comfortable with that. Though i will post a select few of my favorite panels - with permission. I have also been getting my own raws recently, so i’ll post bits and piece as i see fit, but I will probably never post whole chapters.
There are a lot of other places that share the raws- Facebook page, “A seme’s heart” is a great place to look and they also post their own app translated version of the chapter. and i’ve heard of various other instragram accounts that post raws as well.
Sites like Bato and Mangago also post free to read chapters on their sites- though they are usually very slow at updating and posting. But I believe they are upto date - but they probably wont have the newest chapter that just came out last night for a couple more weeks.
